Weyburn celebrates Malanka

On January 17, at the Cugnet Centre, the Ukrainian community gathered together to celebrate "Malanka". Malanka is the celebration of Ukrainian New Year and originated from a folk tale by a Ukrainian ethnologist. Traditionally speaking, the Malanka commemorates the feast day of Saint Melania the Younger. In Ukraine, the night was spent with carolers going from house to house playing pranks or performing small plays. Today, Ukrainians all over the world still follow this tradition but with different variations. The Weyburn community celebration included an evening filled with a social, dinner, dancing and draws. Dignitaries on hand to take part in the festivities included Mary-Ann Trischuk, Danylo Puderak, Stan Ganczer, Debra Button, Evelyn Wojcichowsky, Vitali Sorokotiaguine and Jeri Fleck. The evening began with a social and followed with a delicious supper which included traditional foods like perogies and cabbage rolls. Throughout the evening, attendees bid on silent auction items and purchased raffle tickets. Entertainment included performances by two dance groups from the local Weyburn Ukraine Dance Club. Other entertainment included Bogdan Vatsyk, who moved throughout the crowd playing his violin. Also, the Weyburn Ukraine Choir performed under the direction of Vatsyk. The evening entertainment wrapped up with a performance from Yevshan and Magic of Karpaty Musicians. Naturally, as at any New Year’s Eve celebration, the countdown began at 11:59 p.m. and at midnight the traditional Kolomyka was performed. Participants form a circle, joining hands, turning the circle, usually counterclockwise, then clockwise, or by forming a spiral. Further into the dance, soloists perform their signature moves in the centre of the circle. What a great way to start off the New Year!

year-old male. As a result of the stop, the driver was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and a roadside screening test was conducted. When the driver failed the roadside test, he was placed under arrest and take to the Weyburn PS office for breath tests. He has been charged with driving over .08 and driving while impaired. He will be making a court appearance. On January 13, the Weyburn PS responded to a report of an assault at a local residence. A 24 yearold male had assaulted a 54 year-old male. The matter was mediated without need for further police involvement or charges at this time. In the early morning hours of January 13, while on routine patrol, the Weyburn Police Service became involved in a very short pursuit with what was later determined to be a stolen vehicle from Regina. They spotted the vehicle entering Weyburn from Hwy # 35 north at a very high speed. In the interests of public safety, the pursuit was called off almost as soon as it began. The officer continued to look for the vehicle and located it a short time later on Foster Street and approached the vehicle. Three occupants fled on foot. A short time later a 33 yearold female was arrested near the scene without incident. She is facing charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, obstructing police and

breach of a release condition. A 32 year-old male was apprehended a short distance from the vehicle after a physical altercation with the Police. He is facing charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, flight from police, obstruction and resisting arrest. The third suspect, a 35 year-old male was not located and remains at large. A warrant has been issued for his arrest. The matter remains under investigation. All suspects are from Regina. The Weyburn PS are investigating a report of a Fraud at a local business following an incident on January 12. Items were purchased but the payment card was declined. The suspect, a 28 year-old male who has been identified, then told the business that another business whom he was purchasing the tires for, would cover the costs. The matter is still under investigation. On January 12, the Weyburn Police Service received a report of a young person having received threatening text messages. The matter is under investigation but is not believed to be of immediate concern to the victim's safety. Also on January 12, the Weyburn PS received a report of a stolen money order having been cashed. The money order was sent in error to a wrong address but was subsequently cashed, and the matter is being investigated.

How to find the right help

Sun Country Health Region offers a wide variety of programs to help the people of this Region maintain or improve their health. You can find a list of these programs, with contact information, on our website at http:// www.suncountr y.sk.ca/ service/233/88/servicedirectory-for-schr.html But finding the programs we offer is not the only step to take. Sometimes people don't realize which program we offer might help them or their family. Our ABI program is an example of this. ABI stands for Acquired Brain Injury. For instance, not everyone who has experienced a motor vehicle accident, a stroke, a brain tumour, or even a severe fall causing concussion, is aware that our ABI services might be useful to them and/or their family members. Not everyone who is transferred out of the Region for a higher level of care or advanced therapy after one of those incidents will receive a referral to the Sun Country Health Region's ABI program for services when they return home. Often, when they return home, the patient may realize he or she need some help to go forward. Or their family members may. They don't always know what they need or where to find it. That's when a call to the ABI Coordinator, at 306-8428315, can be most helpful. Sometimes it's not the person who experienced the incident who needs or wants the help, but one of their family members. Maybe the children of a stroke survivor, or a spouse, need some help to understand new behaviour in their loved one, and what might indicate a further problem. Receiving complete and accurate information will reduce some of the stress involved in these situations for everyone involved. The ABI program offers group therapy sessions to help people cope, as well as private assessments and counselling sessions with the

ABI Coordinator. Another service within the program exists for people who turn to the use of a medical scooter after a brain injury or for other reasons. They will benefit from an ABI workshop on the specific rules of the road for those mobility devices. It is considerably different from the rules for cars or trucks. SCHR was the first Region in Saskatchewan to develop this program and is very proud of its successes. Clients have very much appreciated the information gained from participating in these sessions. Sun Country Health Region exists to serve you. We base the type of programs we offer on the needs and feedback we receive from the public. So don't hesitate to contact those people in charge of our programs with your questions.

Sticks and stones

By Helen Waller I typically plan for my column a few days before the official due date, but every once in awhile, something causes me to delay. Rather than refer to it as procrastination, I like to think of it as something better is on its way. I sat at my desk for a few hours in the last couple of days, completing my assignments, yet still not able to finish the one piece of work that is entirely mine. That would be my column. I get free reign here, so you would think that would make it that much easier. It, in fact, makes it much more difficult. I feel a real sense of responsibility sending out messages that may, at times, be slightly controversial, but spark conversations - and in the end, leave everyone involved feeling positive about the message sent. Life seems like it should be black and white, but as I get older I have definitely noticed there is a grey area in between. Not everything is as cut and dried as we like to make it seem. One of these issues is bullying. It's a subject of extreme sensitivity and importance - one that I feel as parents we don't talk enough about. Sure, we get defensive when someone approaches us about our little Johnny and on the attack when we feel our little Johnny is being bullied, but real serious conversations are simply not happening. Technology has made it increasingly easier for bullies. No longer do you have to have the physical strength to throw someone in the locker. Now, at the click of a button, cruel remarks and nasty comments can be sent, sometimes without any signature attached. It is a dangerous territory for our children. The old saying of “sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me” is simply untrue. The power of a word is not seen with your eyes but nevertheless can do damage to another’s self worth. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or other social media sites are not "bad". It's how we use them that is. Bullying has always been and will continue to be until as parents, we teach our children that bullying is not acceptable. Not only is it not acceptable but when bullying happens, it has far more to do with them than the other person. So as parents, when we get the call that our child has been the "bully" (and every child will be at some time) it's our job to dig deep. The real reason any child feels the right or need to lash out at someone else is not in the words that they put on another person’s Facebook or Twitter page, it's because of the words they don't have to really express and understand how they are feeling. Words have power, choose them wisely.

Watch your step! By Linda Wegner Watch your step! Have you ever, like me, heard that exhortation or suffered the results of ignoring it? On a recent walk I was reminded of the real possibility of a nasty fall if I wasn't careful. In less than the fifteen minutes it took to journey from the top of a nearby hill to our home on the level street below, I trekked down a steep incline, side-stepped rivers of washed-up sand deposited on cement pathways, avoided stretches of sidewalk that had heaved under recent rains and studiously avoided areas painted yellow by city crews. Although I've made that trip many times, I always inwardly sigh with relief when I make it home without incident. At the same time I find myself thinking of a friend who started out on what seemed like a routine bike ride through the forest surrounding his home. As he moved forward on a familiar path he hit a newly fallen piece of log and flew over the handle bars of his bicycle. Just minutes earlier he'd entered the woods as a healthy, newly retired professional; he left in an ambulance and began his life as a quadriplegic. All I can say is if I ever have such a misfortune I would want to display the same strength of character and refusal to give up that he displays. Watching our step (or our wheels) isn't always easy. In spite of clearly marked dangers, we sometimes trip; in the face of warnings, we are not immune from stumbling. In his letter to the Christians living in Ephesus, Paul not only urged each individual to watch how they walked, he warned them of the dangers of careless disobedience. "Walk in love as Christ also has loved us." Where self gratification shouts "opportunity", there is safety in choosing God's definition of love.

I re-read an article about geese the other day. It was written in 1972 by Dr. Robert McNeish, for a sermon he had to preach, entitled "Lessons from the Geese". In his article, he describes a really cool thing about geese: "When a goose gets sick or wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow their fellow member down to help provide protection. They stay with this member of the flock until he or she is either able to fly again or dies. Then they launch out on their own, with another formation, or catch up with their own flock." I love that. In my role as pastor, I spend a fair bit of time with people who, for one reason or another, have had to "drop out of formation". Sick, wounded, shot down…yeah it happens to all of us. As I go from situation to situation, whether it's in hospitals, living rooms or counselling sessions in my office, one thing becomes painfully clear: Some people have a travelling buddy, and most don't. Some very fortunate people have someone who can drop out with them, set their own life aside for a while, and nurse them back to health. Those people are blessed. Their chances of recovering are good. When you have a travelling buddy who can press "pause" on their life when you are sick, wounded or shot down, chances are much better that you'll be able to catch up with the rest of the flock quickly, and with fewer lasting effects than if you had to go it alone. Having been sick, wounded and shot down a few times, I can tell you from my own experience that having a travelling buddy is an amazing gift in your time of need. "But then I'd have to let people in." "I'd have to admit to someone else that I'm struggling." "I'd have to risk them judging me." And that's very true - it is a risk. People can let you down. People can be unwilling to be there for you. It's not all sunshine and roses in every flock! Despite the risks, I agree with Roger McNeish: we can learn something from the geese. Life's hard enough; let's not try to do this alone. Is there someone near you who is sick, wounded or getting shot at? Why not take a few minutes out of your day to encourage them? You never know when it might be your turn to need a travelling buddy. Pastor Jay Mowchenko, Weyburn Free Methodist Church
