The CP Holiday Train wraps up its 2014 tour in Weyburn The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train made its last stop of 2014 in Weyburn on Wednesday, December 17. The Holiday Trains make stops in communities across their service area, offering free concerts and seasonal festivities from a boxcar that they have turned into a travelling stage. The annual event sees CP Rail and the Salvation Army partnering together to raise food and cash donations for food banks across North America. To date, the train that travels through Canada, and the other one which travels through the United States, have covered over 100,000miles, raised close to $9.5 million and 3.3 million pounds of food

since the program first began in 1999. The CP Rail Holiday Train wrapped up its tour right here in Weyburn, which marked one of 150 free concerts the entertainers provided over the three week process. The Salvation Army was on site, providing free hot chocolate and collecting cash and food donations. Once the train arrived, the crowd was treated to a performance from country music artist, Kira Isabella. The evening continued on with a presentation from CP Rail. A cheque for $5,500 was donated to the local Weyburn Salvation Army. The official results of the "Food Fight" con-

test between Barber Motors and the City of Weyburn were announced. Barber Motors came out on top with a collection of 638 pounds of food, compared to the 572 pounds of food collected by the City of Weyburn. Cash donations Continued on page 2

Annual JAMS dinner set for December 25

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train rolled into Weyburn December 17 for its annual visit.

Over the past 11 years, Sandy Johnson and her three daughters have been spreading their Christmas cheer to residents of the community without anyone to spend the holidays with. "We have donated over $10,000 back into the community," said Johnson. In 2003, Johnson's husband passed away, and she and her daughters, Jen, Ali and Mikki wanted to make a different memory for their own family. Spending it cooking Christmas dinner for others is how JAMS Family Christmas Day Dinner idea came about. "It is not just us, but numerous volunteers over the years who have also given up their Christmas Day to serve others," added Johnson. The dinner takes place Thursday, December 25 at Knox Hall beginning at 1:00 p.m. Anyone wanting to come, can register until that day, however, they will accept walk-ins. To register for the dinner, volunteer to help or to donate, call 306-842-3316. "We will deliver to shut-ins as well as provide pick up for people who may need it," said Johnson. A $10 donation is suggested, which will go to the Knox Hall general fund.

CP Holiday Train cont’d Continued from front page collected by the City of Weyburn, along with help from Enerplus and Crescent Point Energy, totalled $10,857. Barber Motors was able to collect $8,800. In the end, The City of Weyburn came out slightly ahead of Barber Motors in the food fight challenge as each dollar raised was counted as one pound of food. Either way, representatives of Barber Motors and the City both agreed that all fun aside, the real winner from the challenge was the Salvation Army and all who benefit from the work they do all year long. Community members, along with Microtel, brought over 800 pounds of food that evening. CP encourages everyone who attends the concerts to bring along food donations. The successful event, which raised over $20,000 of cash/ food value donations, will stay in the City of Weyburn. Anyone who attended the concert can upload their photos to the website at http://www.cpr.ca/holiday-train/ canada. CP Rail hosts a photo contest with the grand prize being a passenger on next year's Holiday Train.

Eliminate entitlement

By Andrea Corrigan M With Christmas just ahead of us, I found this great A Y column by Kristen Welch which hopefully will wake up B some of the parents out there who are giving their kids E everything but still seeing no difference in their attiT tude. Enjoy…I know I did although the parents that it H usually pertains to are the ones that turn a deaf ear. As A T’ Dr. Phil always says, "How's that working for you?" S Nine things we should get rid of to help our kids J She borrowed something from me. U And then she lost it. S Accidents happen. T But it was the whole "It only cost ten bucks-you can M get another one" attitude that I couldn't let happen a E moment longer. So, I gave her a job that required hard work and gave her the $10 she earned and then I made her pay me for what she lost. Listen, when I realized I was more than half the problem in this whole entitlement parenting challenge, it was a wake-up call. Kids naturally want what they haven't earned, especially if we are handing it out for free. But what we have is an entire generation of young adults who got everything they ever wanted with little or no work; we have a cultural norm and it's a problem. Because reality is, life doesn't give us everything we want. We don't always get the best jobs or a job at all. We don't always have someone rescue us when we have a bad day or replace our boss just because we don't like them. We can't always have what we want when we want it. We aren't always rewarded in life. Here are nine things we can get rid of to begin eliminating entitlement in our children: 1. Guilt: Often we give into our kid's requests out of guilt. We need to stop feeling guilty for not giving our kids everything they want. It's hard to swallow, but we foster the attitude of entitlement in our homes when we are ruled by a guilty conscience. It's okay to ask kids to be responsible for what they lose and to require consequences for actions. 2. Overspending: I think it's good for our kids to hear us say, "We can't afford that" Or "We will have to save for it." Because that's real life. We don't have All The Money to Buy All the Things. I've known families before who are working multiple jobs to keep kids in extracurricular activities, when honestly, the kids would probably be happier with more family time. 3. Birthday Party Goody Bag (Mentality): I've been guilty of this like most of us. But, really? We take our kids to parties so they can give a gift, but they take a small one home so they won't feel bad? It's not their birthday. This concept of spoiling kids (which usually goes far beyond goody bags) is temporary fun. It's okay for them not to be the center of attention. 4. Making our day-week-month, our world about our kids: Working in the non-profit world has redirected our extra time. We simply can't center our lives around our children when we are centering our lives around Christ. Child-centered homes don't help children in the long-run. 5. The desire to make our children happy (all the time): If you visited my house, you'd find out pretty quickly that someone's always unhappy. It's not our job to keep our kids happy. Don't carry that impossible burden. Typically when our kids are unhappy, it's because we are standing our ground. And that makes for much healthier kids in the future. 6. Made Up Awards: You know what I'm talking about. Rewarding everyone who participates in every area only fosters an inflated self esteem. Kids don't need rewards for every little thing. It's okay to lose, they learn through failure as much as success. 7. Fixing all their problems: I don't like to see my kids struggling. There's a part of every parent that longs to make things right in their child's world. But it's not healthy to create a false reality. You won't always be there to do so and not only that, if you're doing it all for your child, why would they need to learn to do it themselves? Fixing all their problems is really only creating more challenges in the future. 8. Stuff: We could all probably fill a half dozen trash bags with just stuff. Excess. Try it. Bag it up and get your kids to help you and give it to someone who needs it. 9. Unrealistic Expectations: My girls are always asking for manicures. I didn't have one until I was married, pregnant and 27 years old. I'm not opposed to the occasional treat, but it's the attitude of expecting it because you as a parent or others have it. Just because I have an iPhone, doesn't mean my children will get one. We don't have to give our kids everything we have. It's okay to make them wait for things in life. It's okay to toss out these things. Go ahead, give it a try. Merry Christmas and may all your dreams come true in 2015!

Unwrapping the gifts By Linda Wegner There's little to compare to the excitement of a child waiting to dive into the treasure trove of parcels under a tree. Or, of an adult whose carefully disciplined emotions didn't quite reach the pupils of his or her eyes. Whether dancing with pleasure or rubbing one's hands in anticipation, removing the barrier between the recipient and the gift is anything but dull. At least it shouldn't be. If your family is like ours, you've established some traditions regarding this important phase of Christmas celebrations: Who passes out the presents? When does the unwrapping begin? Where does the first gift come from i.e. back of the tree or? Why that order? What happens next? What happens next can range from delighted surprise to sometimes ill-concealed disappointment, or anything in between. You see, it's not even so much how the parcel or envelope is wrapped, it's what is inside that matters. That less-than-beautifully enfolded box could well contain a long hoped for treasure while conversely, a magnificently swathed gift might hold something of no value to the recipient. As lovely or as tacky as it may be, the outside wrapping of any gift is no guarantee of its value or lack of it. I've been giving a lot of thought to that concept. The manner in which we judge the skin a person comes it too often prejudices our reaction to them. Unlike those brightly coloured parcels stashed beneath a tree, it's far too easy to dismiss someone or someone's talents simply because of how they appear on the outside. God doesn't. "For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7) Who knows what treasures lie inside the person we only see as wrapped in less than our criteria?

Wishing you a joy-filled Christmas With Christmas carols playing in the background at our shopping places, Christmas decorations and lights displayed for the last month or so, countless Christmas parties and concerts to fit into our busy schedules, and every second person wishing us a "Merry Christmas" or the dreaded secular-sounding "Happy Holiday" for the last several weeks, is it any wonder that we are practically all "Christmassed out" by the time that the actual feast of Jesus' birth arrives on December 25th? Maybe at best, we can muster one last hurrah and grand finale on this day itself to stuff ourselves with all manner of turkey and all the trimmings, before we toss the tree outside on Boxing Day, and pack away all the lights and decorations for another year. It seems harder and harder every year for our churches to maintain the season of Advent of waiting and preparing our hearts for the coming of Christ, as we anticipate the celebration of Christ's first coming in order to be in touch with His promise to return at the end of time. The commercialization of Christmas with all its hustle and bustle has us usually worn out before the solemnity of Jesus' Nativity arrives for us to celebrate the implications of Christ's incarnation, the mystery of God's Son coming in human flesh. No wonder we often mistaken the joy of Christmas for something other than the mystery of God sending His Son into our world to set us free from our sins and to bring us His salvation. What we associate with Christmas joy is hardly more than an extension of the consumeristic mentality of earthly happiness and pleasure which in itself is very fleeting and momentary. Real Christian joy is not based upon the number of presents under the tree or even what is in them. True Christian joy is not dependent on our emotional state of happiness connected to our wants, but actually is based upon the establishment of lifelong and life-changing friendship and relationship with God and our Lord Jesus Christ, upon whom we place all our trust and faith as the source of our inner peace and sense of full contentment. This is not based on everything going well exteriorly but more on His presence that abides despite all the trials and tribulations we are dealing with. In the midst of our poverty and hardships, true Christian joy endures and prevails because at its heart is the key relationship with Christ, who helps us to overcome all that hurts and hampers our relationship with God and others. By His coming into our world, Christ brings forgiveness and healing for our sins, as we turn to Him with repentance and contrition in our hearts. In the name of our Saviour, may your hearts be filled with His joy, His peace, and His love as you celebrate with thanksgiving His birth in the humble stable of Bethlehem, establishing that He has clearly come for all, regardless of our status and station in life. and to support a number of youth organizations in need. SGI has also asked employees across the province to collect new and gently used coats and other winter wear which will also be donated. "We know all too well, Saskatchewan winters can be

harsh. Thousands of children last year were better prepared for the winter because of the Coats 4 Kids program," said Andrew Cartmell, President and CEO of SGI. "SGI is proud to help keep kids warm this winter."

Saskatchewan's population has grown to nearly 1,130,000 according to the latest figures released today by Statistics Canada. As of October 1, there were 1,129,899 people living in Saskatchewan, an increase of 4,489 in the past quarter and 18,102 in the past year. Premier Brad Wall noted it was just seven years ago that Saskatchewan's population hit one million people. "Since then, we have seen steady growth of another 130,000 people - nearly 20,000 per year," Wall said. "That kind of growth creates both opportunities and challenges. One of those challenges will be to keep our economy and our population growing in 2015 in the face of falling oil revenues. Our government will be working hard to meet this challenge through sound fiscal management, continued investment in important infrastructure projects and tax incentives for new growth and job creation. "The good news is that Saskatchewan's economy is a lot more diversified than it was just a few years ago, so a slowdown in one sector can be offset by growth in other areas. That's why we continue to enjoy the strongest rate of job creation and the lowest unemployment rate in the country, in addition to continued population growth." Over the past year, Saskatchewan had the second-strongest rate of population growth among the provinces, behind only Alberta.

What’s happening in your COMMUNITY Do you have a STORY TO SHARE WITH US? Please email it to us at weyburnthisweek@sasktel.net

His memory lives on The Cugnet family, in partnership with Crescent Point Energy, donated $185,000 to the community of Weyburn on behalf of Ken Cugnet. Pictured top left, (l-r) Tim Cugnet, holding son George, Matthew Cugnet with wife Jennifer holding daughter, Josephine, Craig Cugnet, Leyna Cugnet holding daughter Kensington and son Kingston (standing), Dan Cugnet with wife Tana and daughter Isabelle, Joanne Bannatyne Cugnet, Royal Canadian Legion Weyburn Branch #47 past president Brian Glass accepting a $40,000 cheque from Crescent Point Energy representatives Tim Lequyere and Dale Rinas. Missing from photo is grandson David Cugnet.

It appears that the Cugnet family have appeared in ‘A Christmas Carol’ this holiday season. The movie sees ghosts of Christmas past, present and future appear, but there was definitely no Scrooge on site. On December 19, Crescent Point Energy donated a total of $185,000 to the community of Weyburn in memory of Ken Cugnet, who passed away earlier this year. The family participated in choosing the three organizations which would receive the donations. Ken's wife, Joanne Bannatyne Cugnet, along with the family were present for the donations. "Our whole family was just entirely touched that they would choose to do this, and the fact that they gave the choice of charities to our family," she said. The recipients, according to Joanne, were representative of the past, present and future of the Weyburn Community. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #47, which is representing the past, received $40,000 to aid in the repairs to the roof of the hall. The present was represented by Nickle Lake Regional Park. A total of $120,000 was donated to help with the development of new campsites for the area. The park has seen an increasing demand of people wanting to camp over the summer holidays. Lastly, representing the future, the Cugnet family chose to create a bursary of $2,000 for 12 years to graduates from Weyburn Comprehensive High School. The bursary will be awarded to a student who chooses to pursue studies in petroleum engineering or geology. Crescent Point Energy staff were pleased to work alongside with the Cugnet Family, in making these donations possible. CP representative, Dale Rinas commented, "For us to be able to have these donations today in the memory of Ken is really gratifying."

Pictured top right, (l-r): Cugnet family along with Nickle Lake Regional Park Board President Terry Benning accepting a $120,000 cheque from Crescent Point Energy representatives Tim Lequyere and Dale Rinas. Year End Review by Ed Komarnicki, M.P. Souris-Moose Mountain The focus has been on growing the economy and creating jobs. Government direct program spending is down for four consecutive years, the first time this has happened since 1961-62. Over 1.2 million jobs have been created since the recession. The economy is fragile, however, so we must continue to be vigilant, especially with the f luctuation in oil and commodity prices. We have cut taxes over 160 times and are keeping them low. This alone has saved an average family of 4 approximately $3400 per year. The overall federal tax burden is at its lowest in 50 years. Canada's total government net debt continues to decline and remain the lowest of any G7 country. We are on target to balance the budget in 2015 with a projected surplus of $1.9 billion. The government will continue to reduce the size of the federal debt with unused annual contingency funds. In addition to all of the above, we have added a significant income boost to families with children. For any couple with children

under 18, a new tax provision will allow them to income split to a maximum of $2000 per year. Although some may oppose this, the time has come to look at whole family income when it comes to taxation as families depend on that income to meet their needs. Also, anyone with a child under 6 will have the Universal Child Care Benefit raised from $100 to $160 per month for an annual total of $1920 per child. For a family with two children under 6, this would mean $3840 per year, a fairly substantial amount. Also, a further payment of $60 per month per child from age 6 to 17 will be forthcoming for a total of $720 per child per year. The net effect will help families who need help most.

The New Building Canada Plan that includes the national infrastructure component, the provincial/territorial regional component, as well as a small communities component has been established for the next 10 years, and the program has now been fully launched by the federal and provincial governments. This, along with the Gas Tax Fund, will add nearly $50 billion to communities over the next 10 years. As we know, we saw many trade deals signed, and the most significant was the agreement with the European Union. This should allow us to continue to lead on the economic front. We are also working hard to stand up for Canada and for Canadian values on

the world stage. We stood in solidarity with Ukraine, we were never neutral with terrorists, and as always, we stand by Israel. After pictures of beheadings by members of ISIL, and the murder and rape of women and children, a raw ner ve has been struck with Canadians. In my view there is clear support to eliminate the threat, and when we can, to degrade the assets and ability to organize and

carr y out operational plans. The Liberals are absolutely on the wrong side of this issue, as are the NDP. The murders of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo drive home the fact that these types of actions can be taken on Canadian soil. All in all, it has been a busy year with an election looming in next year's horizon. You can expect partisanship and actions in

the House to take on a new energy as all parties set their eyes on the 2015 election. The Hill seldom remains dull and there is always a news story waiting to be told. I would like to thank you, my constituents, for the support I have received this far and I can say it has indeed been a great privilege and honour to represent you. I offer my best wishes for a healthy and prosperous new year.

My Favourite Christmas Memory

Happy New Year! From all of us at

Fashion that fits your wallet 57 - 3rd Street • 306-842-2108

East Wey Auto Body Inc

My favorite Christmas memory was when I was eight years old. My Papa (grandpa) was still alive and all the kids sat in front of him. I (Nikki) was in the front followed by my sister. Renee and my cousins Kailyn, Ayden, Justine, and Jami. He gave all the kids presents. He always gave the best presents! I got a Barbie pool and my cousin, Ayden, got a Spiderman toy and we played for hours. Later the kids played hide and seek and I was always the best! That was my very best Christmas memory. By Nikki M., Grade 6 - Queen Elizabeth School My best Christmas memory was when I was sick on Christmas day and I opened my presents and I got a Barbie house. It was bright pink with an elevator and a balcony. I asked my Mom to build it for me and she did. It took her a half an hour to build. I played with it for a while then it got boring so I went to bed. Then I woke up crying and screaming "Where is my Barbie house?" My Mom came upstairs and told me it was downstairs. I asked if she could carry me downstairs and let me play with it. She took me downstairs and set me down beside the Barbie house and I did. By Kristen F, Grade 6 - Queen Elizabeth School

HILLVIEW SERVICE LTD.

My best Christmas memory was last year, when my parents got me a pellet gun and some things too. The day we drove to my Grandma Sheila and my Grandpa Roland's house. Our cousins, aunts and uncles were there so my cousins and I played games and ran around the house. After a while we had supper and dessert. Then we opened presents and played with them. Then we visited and played cards. When we were done at Grandma and Grandpa's house we drove home and started to clean up the wrapping paper, the tape and the other garbage. We brought our Christmas presents into our rooms and told our Mom and Dad thank you for our presents. By Rylan M., Grade 6 - Queen Elizabeth School One Christmas morning I was at my grandma's house in Kindersley. I woke up and I woke everybody else up. We went upstairs and ate Christmas breakfast. After that we went to the living room and opened our Christmas presents except for one. It was my Christmas present! I opened it and it was an iPad!!! I was so excited. The iPad had games on it already like Mindcraft and Survival Craft. I also got some other cool games but I played those two games most of the day. I was so happy. When I was on my way home I played my iPad. I thought to myself this is the best Christmas present ever. By Summer B., Grade 6 - Queen Elizabeth School My favorite Christmas memory is when my cousins and I went sledding on their giant hill on some new sleds that they got for Christmas. One of my cousins pushed me when I was in a sled and one of my other cousins was at the bottom of the hill. I put my hands in the ground to stop me then my cousin that pushed me yelled at him to move but he did not hear him so I yelled too. He finally moved so I took my hands off the ground and leaned forward so that I could gain lots of speed and get across their dugout. After the ride was finished my uncle hooked the sled up to his Ski-doo to take the sled up the hill and do it over again. By Cash C., Grade 6 - Queen Elizabeth School

My favorite Christmas memory is when we got my first quad. I was so happy I ran up to my Mom and Dad and hugged them so tight they couldn't breathe. I ran out the door and my Mom came out too. We went in the house and bundled up, then tried to start it up, but it wouldn't start. We pushed it to the garage and left it for a bit. I finished unwrapping my gifts. I got a new sled, a toy truck and a movie. We drank some hot chocolate and went outside to build a snowman. Then we went to the garage, the quad started and we drove around town. Weyburn This Week, Friday, December 26, 2014 11 My favorite Christmas is when I was 6. I had Christmas at my old house in Estevan. It was 2012. My sisters, Mom, Dad and Yogi (dog) and I were there. It was exciting! It was special because we got to celebrate God's birthday because God is special and so is his birthday. We opened Christmas Eve presents. Then we made gingerbread houses and cookies. I will never forget that favourite Christmas. By Breanna P., St. Michael School My favourite Christmas was when I got to go skating with my family. Then I had it at my Gramma's house. My Gramma made it special because she made us a special dinner. What else made it special was after dinner, I got to play with the toys downstairs in the basement. Then we got to go and my

Gramma said "Merry Christmas Thomas." When I was young, my Mom took a picture of me and my brother beside our Christmas tree opening our presents from Santa. I like Christmas because I get presents from Santa. Christmas is my favourite day of the year! By Thomas V., St. Michael School My favourite Christmas was last year when I was 7, it was soooo much fun! We had it at my Gramma B's house and we got to have a sleepover! Me, Emy, Maya and my cousins Asher, Parker, Hayla, Quinn and Cohen slept over at our Gramma's house and it was awesome! What made it really special was that we were all together for Christmas! Our Gramma does a draw every year for which cousin buys a present for which cousin. Last year I bought for Quinn and he bought for me. I got him a video game for his Xbox - he got me a Just Dance 2014 for our Wii. I hope last year's Christmas will be just as good as this year's! By Sophia J., St. Michael School

My favourite Christmas was when I went up to my cabin for Christmas. We cut down a tree and decorated the tree. Santa gave me this toy grader for Christmas. I was with my Dad, my brother, my sister and my grandpa. We went Ski-dooing. My Dad gave me this Lego army set, my brother gave me this truck with a tent. I built a snow fort. We had lots of snowball fights. THE END By Camdyn D., Grade 3 - St. Michael School It was 2011, December 24. I could hardly sleep. I was so excited I almost exploded! It was 5:13 o'clock. I was told not to get up until 6:00 o'clock. I was told we would go somewhere special for Christmas. It turned out my Mom carried me to the car while I was sleeping. When I woke up I was at Grandma's house! I was shocked because I haven't seen her since I was 2.I was so happy, I ran up to her and yelled "Grandma!" and I had so much fun with her. By Preston H., Grade 3 - St. Michael School I like going to church at Christmas. My family goes together. We go home after to play games. We go sledding, play tag, and after that we go to the basketball court. We play and we go to my friend's house. We play video games and we play skateboard. We go to KFC and to the park. We play soccer in the snow and then we go home. By Tristan P., Grade 3 - St. Michael School

My favourite Christmas was when my grandparents, my parents, and my aunt and uncle took my sisters and I to Edmonton for Christmas. It took a long time to get there. When we got there, we went to check into our hotel. Then we went to find somewhere to eat. After that we went to relax in our hotel rooms. Then we went swimming. Hannah and I were racing on the water slide, my time was 05.5 seconds and Hannah's was 10.7 seconds. The next day we went to West Edmonton Mall, there I got kissed by a sea lion! Then we went to the water park. That was my most favourite Christmas. By Payton C., Grade 3 - St. Michael School

Safety Vic Inc. & Wildfire 1792 Railway Avenue, Weyburn 306-842-3333

My favourite Christmas was that we got to eat turkey. It was delicious. I got to go sledding with my cousins. I got to go into a three person sled. It was great. I got to make a snowman. Last Christmas I got a DS with the best games ever. We got the best Christmas decorations on our Christmas tree. We had an angel on the top of the Christmas tree. But now we sold the angel and we got a star for the top of the tree. We got a lot of Christmas presents under my Christmas tree last Christmas. It was the best Christmas ever. THE END By Nevan K., Grade 3 - St. Michael School
