Welcome Dear Members, The cool temperatures have arrived, and the holiday season is bustling here at Wexford. I invite you to enjoy some holiday cheer with your fellow members this year. The December calendar is filled with festive events from Golf’s Red and Green Nine and Dine to Tennis’ Long Cove/Wexford Tournament to the Yacht Club’s Festival of Lights, Wexford offers many ways to celebrate this year. In addition, the Clubhouse will be a hub of excitement with some traditional favorites such as Santa’s Brunch and the Member Holiday Party plus some new events making their debut including Wexford’s Winter Wonderland and the Christmas Eve Brunch. The Club’s leadership team, committees and Board have continued to focus on the 2021 Infrastructure and Capital Plan successfully completing a year of projects and improvements. I want to thank Dan Ogden, Infrastructure Manager, and the Infrastructure committee for their time and efforts in overseeing these projects from inception to completion. I am excited to see the amount of interest and early voting on this year’s Annual Ballot. I encourage all homeowners to vote electronically by 5:00pm on December 8th. If you would like assistance in completing your electronic ballot, please stop by

Ryan Spence Chief Operating Officer

the Member Services desk where we have set up a voting kiosk for your convenience. If you haven’t voted yet, next time you are at the Clubhouse we encourage you to do so. On behalf of the entire staff, I would like to extend a heartfelt appreciation and thanks to all of you who contributed to the Annual Employee Holiday Fund. We are overwhelmed with gratitude to all of you for your continued support of the staff as we further our reach in providing the most memorable experiences for you at Wexford. Happy holidays and I hope the New Year brings you joy, happiness, and good health. See you at the club!

Regards,

Ryan

Letter from the Board President Hello Neighbors, It doesn’t seem possible that it has been three years since I was elected to your Board of Directors and that two years has gone by as President. I remember my first board meeting in January of 2019 when my biggest decision was which chair to sit in. I can truly say that it has been a rewarding experience to serve on the board with perhaps the best part being able to have an up close, behind-the-scenes look at the work our great employees do daily. It’s easy to take their work for granted when we are simply enjoying a meal at the Clubhouse or playing golf or tennis and only interact with a David Jackson few staff members. It takes over President a hundred employees to keep Wexford running each day and I can say from personal experience that these folks do their best to provide us with a great experience. Thank them whenever you get the chance. It’s been an eventful three years. No one could have possibly anticipated the impact Covid-19 would have on our everyday lives and the everyday functions here at Wexford. It seems as if the board was receiving different guidance weekly, if not daily, from the various government agencies regarding Covid protocols we should implement. The planned monthly board meetings were supplemented with weekly board meetings to deal with the uncertainty. Should we close the Clubhouse or open the Clubhouse with limited service, allow golf, tennis and the pool to be open in some fashion were questions we wrestled with daily. I think the best decision the board made during that time was to keep all our employees and find work for them during the uncertainty. Most of our peers in the Lowcountry made a different decision then struggled to get their employees back when restrictions eased.

I have to thank my fellow Board of Directors members for their dedication to duty and all the work that goes on at board meetings, committee meetings, workshops, etc. And I would like to especially thank the board members for their support during my last two years as your President. The President at Wexford only votes in the case of a tie on board issues and I have not voted once in the last two years. Yes, there have been many lively debates with opinions expressed on both sides of an issue, which I frankly think is the way the board should operate, but at the end of all the debate the board has come together and presented a united front to whatever issue we have faced. I wish future boards the same camaraderie in dealing with the challenges they will surely face. I’ll end by wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season and lots of fun and success in all your endeavors.

All the best,

David

3 • The Club Times

A lot of good things have happened in the last three years. We completed the very popular new pool and pool bar complex. A new irrigation system was installed on the golf course to replace the existing system that was over 30 years old and failing. We finished the Clubhouse entrance relocation and within a few weeks will be finished with a new four-court

lighted pickleball complex and will have finished installing lighting on all our tennis courts. We finished a project to completely replace the substandard wiring and service pedestals in our harbour and accelerated replacement of pier decking to coincide with the wiring project. There have been big changes in the management team with the arrival of Ryan Spence as our Chief Operating Officer, hiring of Ian Munroe as our Director of Club Operations, and completely remaking the food service with the hiring of Chef Josh Goetz and his new support staff in the kitchen. We are on the verge of starting the Wexford Home Services division which I think will prove to be very popular. Wexford property owners will be able to contract directly with Wexford for weekly pool service with landscaping service and installation to follow. And it is my hope that at least some of the new amenities proposed in the Facilities Plan will be built in the near future so we can have even more great experiences here at Wexford.

Vote Today: How to Cast Your Ballot Voting is now open for the 2021 Annual Meeting. Members are encouraged to vote electronically and should have received an email from elections@vote-now.com on Monday, November 8th. If you did not receive the email, please check your spam or junk folders before contacting info@wexfordhiltonhead.com. As a reminder, there is one vote allowed per property. Members can expect the following with online voting: • Each Voter will receive an email invitation in their personal email account. • The invitation includes a link to the secure site with the Voter’s personal registration code embedded. Once a ballot has been cast using this code, it will not work again. • For the Annual Meeting ballot, Voters will make their selection of candidates. A verification screen then shows the candidates chosen, and alerts about any undervotes. The Voter can return to the ballot to make changes if necessary. • For any other voting, including budgets and covenant changes, a full description of the information is included as a link within the ballot. • To navigate the ballot, use the menu icons on the lefthand side of your screen. Do not click on the back button of your browser window. This is for security reasons. • Wexford HOA Administration will be able to assist in the following situations: email address change, resend

invitation email, and verify vote submission (but cannot see any details of the vote). All electronic votes and paper ballots will be submitted to the Wexford Legal Team for official counting as in years past. Any technical questions may be directed to Sheryl Cress at info@wexfordhiltonhead.com. If you would like additional assistance, a voting kiosk is at the Member Services desk in the Clubhouse.

The Club Times • 4

During this season of giving, this is a friendly reminder to all Wexford members — the Wexford Foundation needs your support to help us reach our 2021 goal of $250,000 of member donations. For new donors, your contribution will be maximized through the generous 4th Quarter Challenge put out by Foundation Trustees, Stephen Carter and Paul McEvoy, who each have offered $25,000 to triple your donations i.e., a $500 or $1,000 donation will contribute a valuable $1,500 or $3,000 respectively to our Foundation. Your donation can be billed to your Wexford member account or you can send a check to the Wexford Foundation, P.O Box 4100, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928. PLAY LIKE A PRO:

Watch the Ball We hear this statement all the time but do you know what it really means? Watching the ball really means “reading” the ball. In order to keep the ball in your optimal hitting strike zone, you must first figure out what the ball is doing. Is it a forehand or backhand, is the incoming ball height high, medium or low? Is it moving fast, medium or slow? Does it have topspin, backspin or no spin? Will the ball land short, medium or deep on my side? All the information on the incoming ball must be made very quickly in order to have time to “MOVE YOUR FEET” to the ball.

PICKLEBALL TIP

Keep OUT of the Middle 5 • The Club Times

Congratulations to Wexford’s Ladies 6.5 team, under captain Lynn Looby, who reached the State Finals in Aiken this past month.

Your strongest OFFENSIVE position in Pickleball is when BOTH you and your partner are positioned at the No-Volley Line. Be ready to volley and try not to let the ball bounce on your side! If the incoming ball is low and slow, be ready to DINK it back!

FAST FIVE WITH CHEF JOSH Q. What’s your first memory of your love for cooking? A. My first memories of cooking were with my maternal grandmother on the family farm making fried chicken, beef stew and cinnamon rolls. She cooked for all the ranch hands and only had recipes for 30 people. We always had a lot of leftovers – well, not so much on the cinnamon rolls. Q. Describe your style in two to three words. A. Deconstruction – Reconstruction. I love taking classic dishes from around the world, taking the flavors and ingredients, and putting my own “contemporary spin” on them. I call it contemporary regional cuisine.

Monday - Wednesday Closed

Q. What five ingredients are necessary in your kitchen?

Thursday 5:00pm – 8:30pm*

A. Talking to chefs about ingredients or Executive Chef asking “what is your favorite thing to cook” is like asking a painter what their favorite color is. It is the palate that makes the world beautiful. Now that I have said that, I love fat. Butter, Cream, Olive Oil, Bacon, and Cheese. They make everything else taste wonderful.

Friday - Sunday 12:00pm – 8:30pm*

(*Weather Permitting)

Josh Goetz

Q. What would you have as your last meal?

CLUBHOUSE CLOSURES

Q. 3 things you consider to be your cooking strengths. A. Teamwork, respect for staff and ingredients. Restaurant cooking cannot be done by yourself and it takes a great team to be great. Personally, for cooking I love braises. A good, braised joint of meat or a simmering Tuscan Ragu is all I need to put a smile on someone’s face. BONUS: If you could prepare a meal for anyone, who would it be and what would you make? A. Great question, I would cook for my grandmother again. She would get a kick out of what I have become.

Putting for Dough: Green Reading

The Club Times • 8

The preparation for every putt takes into account green reading, alignment and player setup, followed by the actual putting stroke. Reading greens is a combination of experience, awareness, and trust in where you expect the ball to roll during the putt. A helpful tip is to focus on a spot, or multiple spots, you want to see the ball roll over on its way to the hole. This gives us a plan and a point of trust before we make the actual stroke. Also remember that the harder you strike a putt, the less time it will have to take the break. Hitting it softer will allow the ball more time to turn. The following drill reflects this putting strategy. Spot Putting Drill: Line up a putt and use coins on the line you anticipate. If your read of the break was correct, your ball will roll over the coins.

Top Snapper for Boat Canvas Snaps Anyone who has a cover on their boat knows that attaching and removing a boat cover or boat top is seldom easy. Fabric shrinks, snaps corrode, and aligning snaps can quickly become a two-person job. The Top-Snapper blade slides over the snap, allowing you to align the snap halves for easy snapping. The longer blade is for fastening snaps from the inside; the shorter blade for fastening snaps from the outside. This will save all those sore fingers. (Available at Amazon) The Nautical Origins of Everyday Expressions Our everyday speech is peppered with sailors’ language — the perfect companion for etymology lovers, factophiles, ocean dreamers, and the conversationally curious. Three Sheets to the Wind features 200 words and expressions that are nautically inspired. Alphabetically organized (from A to Sea), readers can also enjoy 100 original illustrations and relevant excerpts from the great novels of Melville, Forester, O’Brian, and others. By the way, I used to do a seminar on this very subject, might be time to dust that off. (Available at Amazon) Nylon Dock Lines One gift your new boater friend would appreciate is this double braided nylon dock line. These are premium lines and will look good as they do the job.

Made with nylon, these dock lines stand the test of time against oil, sun, mold, and rot and it includes a storage bag for when the ropes are not in use (true luxury because we will all store these lines in a bag when not in use). I love that for each box you get four nylon ropes, how many of you would love to have that box!? (Available at Amazon) Garmin Quatix 5 Sapphire Smartwatch The Quatix 5 is one of the toughest, most function-packed boating watches on the market. Alongside the usual sport and activity modes, thanks to built-in GPS the watch can be used for navigation and even to control your Garmin autopilot. It will also connect via Bluetooth to Fusion AV systems and Garmin Virb cameras. It comes with swappable metal and silicone straps. (Available at Amazon or Ebay) And finally...

The New Hinckley 40x I have been drooling over these since their introduction. The boat is a showstopper – it has triple outboards and looks ready for adventure. I think they have Mercury Verados, but I’m sure you get whatever engine you want. One thing that stands out is the full-width front windshield which displays at least eight feet of unobstructed glass for incredible visibility. This is a versatile boat that can fish, entertain, overnight or even pull skiers. Because it’s built with lightweight carbon fiber and Kevlar, it will comfortably do 55 mph just in case you need to get there fast. Did you know? Hinckley hulls are guaranteed for life. This is my kind of Christmas gift. (Please ensure Maggie gets a copy of this issue.) Happy shopping and Merry Christmas!

Festival of Lights Sunday, December 5 | 5:00pm Wexford’s Festival of Lights is one of the Yacht Club’s most popular events and serves as a great way for everyone to get into the holiday spirit. As we had 43 new boats commissioned in 2021, we are hoping for a great turn out of Wexford boat owners who are willing to participate by decorating their vessels with holiday lights, ornaments, tinsel and any other knickknacks you can think of. While some may choose to follow a theme there are those who abide by a “tackier is better” policy. Any and all boats are welcome, so we hope and encourage you to join in on the fun. If you are interested in decorating your boat, please get in touch with Mark Dryden, Wexford’s Harbour

Master who will assign you a slip. Boats will be judged on Saturday, December 4th so we ask that you have your vessel decorated and in your assigned slip by 5:00 pm. On Sunday evening, cocktails start at 5:00pm with the official lighting of the boats and Wexford Christmas tree at 6:00pm. A delicious holiday feast will be served from 6:30pm to 8:30pm so be sure to make your dinner reservations in advance as this is usually a sellout event. And as an added bonus, we ask you to leave your boats in the Clubhouse slips for the following week to contribute to the Member Holiday Party aura on December 11th. Happy Holidays from the Wexford Yacht Club Committee!
