Wexford Foundation Gala Celebration

On October 21, the Wexford Foundation hosted its annual Gala at the Clubhouse. The black-tie affair gave the Foundation the opportunity to express its appreciation for the generosity of Wexford donors and recognize the trustees and committee members who volunteer their time and talent to sustain the mission of the organization.

The evening began with time for guests to mingle over appetizers and drinks while Lucy Scandrett, “The Blonde Harpist”, provided beautiful background music. The reception transitioned to a sitdown dinner followed by Chairman Fred Noonan’s remarks about the Foundation’s status, opportunities, and challenges. The memorable evening culminated with auctioneer Sonny Huntley encouraging the audience to bid higher and more often during the live auction.

Winning raffle tickets were then drawn for a Ladies Jewelry Set from Heritage Jewelers, and an Aventon Pace E bike from Hilton Head Bike Shop. The generous donors of the auction and raffle items deserve special thanks for helping the Foundation exceed its auction and raffle goals.

The Foundation is pleased to announce that Paul and M.C. McEvoy have generously agreed to match contributions up to $75,000 from new donors to stimulate fundraising efforts through year end to support the 2024 grant funding.

Since inception, the Foundation has been able to provide $2.4 million to more than 40 non-profit organizations to break the cycle of poverty in our local community — tackling hunger, homelessness, domestic abuse, and affordable access to healthcare and education.

Legacy Society supports future of Wexford

The Legacy Society was established in late 2022 to honor donors who wanted to include the Wexford Foundation in their estate plans.

These planned gifts – typically by will, trust, or beneficiary designation are intended to provide long-term financial support and enhance the ability of the Foundation to sustain our mission well into the future. To date, the Foundation has received bequests of almost $400,000.

The Legacy Society is open to any current or past members who would like to continue sharing their resources with the local community following their time at Wexford.

For those who wish to be recognized for their contribution, the Foundation’s Trustees have established recognition levels for donor bequests. Recognition levels start at $25,000 – Gold, rising through $100,000 - Platinum, to $250,000 and above -Diamond. Members who decide to include the Wexford Foundation in their estate plans in 2023 at the gift level of $25,000 or more will be acknowledged as Charter Members of the Legacy Society.

If your residency in Wexford and on Hilton Head Island has been an important part of your life, please consider contributing to the Foundation and becoming a member of the Legacy Society. Reminders to help keep your Holiday Season safe As there is no parking on Wexford roadways, please reach out to me in your early planning of a holiday party, so we may help you develop a parking plan. Many neighbors work together during the holidays to provide parking in each other’s driveways. If you will be utilizing an adjacent empty lot, please remember to obtain permission, and let security know this has been approved.

Remember when shopping, do not leave packages visible in your vehicle. Place them in the trunk or keep them with you until you are ready to return home. Do not carry so many packages that you cannot easily access your keys. You should have your keys in hand before you get to your vehicle, as you can activate the vehicle alarm with them or quickly enter the vehicle if needed.

While decorating your homes this year, please ensure the outside lighting is not embedded on dry straw/grass as we had reported fires in the past. Never connect more than one extension cord together; instead use a single cord that is long enough to reach the outlet without stretching. Consider setting timers to turn lights on and off during evening hours or try a remote device that allows you to flick the switch using your tablet or smartphone. Always turn off the holiday lights when you leave the house unattended or when going to bed.

Enjoy the holiday season and please remember to slow down while traveling along the roadways, while watching for pedestrians or animals who may be crossing or walking along a roadway, don’t be distracted by cellular telephone calls or texting while driving, obey the posted traffic signs and most importantly, Don’t Drink and Drive.

in great condition. The grass goes dormant in the winter months due to cooler temperatures and shorter days. One thing to keep in mind throughout the winter is traffic wear on the turf.

Since the grass is dormant it will not recover from wear and tear damage until spring and summer when it is actively growing again. However, depending on the severity of damage, it might not recover at all.

• The fountain on #11 is fully operational again.

This can be avoided by limiting traffic on the turf. We will move our entrance and exit posts to spread out the traffic as much as possible.

• The golf course maintenance staff was hard at work in preparation for both men’s and women’s member/ guest tournaments.

We should also keep in mind how many carts go out. The less the better, as it will reduce the amount of stress put on the turf.

One exciting thing the golf course maintenance team has done this year was overseed the tee boxes on holes

#3, #6 & #13. The overseeding of perennial ryegrass will help these tees withstand all the elements of the winter months.

Perennial ryegrass seed has a quick germination period and once the tees are fully grown in it will allow us to rotate tee markers to fill divots with seed that will grow and fill in. Another benefit of overseeding is if there is rain, since the overseed is actively growing it will soak in the water and keep the tees playable.

Aside from all the agronomic benefits to overseeding, it has an exceptional visual aesthetic and will add a tremendous amount character to these holes throughout the winter.

The picture above on the left was taken November 6th, the day seed was dropped. To the right was taken November 17th. As you can see, the seed had germinated and is almost completely grown in.

New clock installed on Driving Range You may have noticed the recent installation of a Rolex-style clock at Wexford’s driving range. The clock, donated by twelve avid Wexford golfers who wish to remain anonymous, is the Cadillac of golf course timepieces, akin to the Rolex clocks one sees at major championship venues.

Standing a statuesque 15 feet high with four-sided 36-inch dials, it is easily seen from the driving range to the chipping green, tennis courts, and ninth green.

The clock, manufactured by the 181-year-old Verdin Clock Company of Cincinnati, took four months to produce.

Among other refined features, the clock is hurricane proof, and time is constantly adjusted via satellite to account for daylight savings time, power outages and the like.

Wexford welcomes Rob Grindereng and the Charles Schwab Championship all in 2020. These opportunities taught him how precise the agronomic practices and planning need to be to push a course to its limits for optimal conditions for the top players in the world to compete for that given week.

In October, Wexford welcomed a new Golf Course Superintendent, Rob Grindereng.

During his career, Rob has worked at several PGA tour tournaments from the Korn Ferry tour to the Champions tour. Starting with the FedEx St. Jude

in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The Tour Championship at Eastlake GC in 2019. Waste Management Phoenix Open, TPC Colorado Championship,

Rob is very excited for this next chapter in his career as Golf Course Superintendent at Wexford. He says Billy and the team have done a fantastic job, and he is eager to incorporate his experiences and perspective into the mix and continue to elevate this golf course.

Upon graduating from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Rob moved to Phoenix, AZ where he spent the past 4 years working at TPC Scottsdale, Desert Mountain and Anthem Golf and Country Club moving his way up from assistant in training to 1st assistant. He attributes a lot of his success to his mentors who have pushed him to grow as a leader and strengthen his skills.

Taking a look back at Wexford golf in 2023 As we finish the season and look forward to 2024, now is a great time to reflect on another busy year in golf. By the end of the year, we are projected to finish with a record number of rounds – overall 22,000 (a new record). It’s great to see so many members playing golf on a routine basis.

The Men’s Member Guest with 111 entrants completed in early November

with 72 members and their guests teeing off with hopes of glory. In the end, it was the team of Pete Halsey and his son Jeff who won the “wedgeoff” and were crowned the champions.

The Ladies Invitational was played in the middle of October, with 84 ladies enjoying golf, camaraderie, and lots of champagne. The Seale team won the Overall Gross, while the Queen/ Ladaga foursome won the Overall Net.

Individually, we have had some great accomplishments throughout the year. Sue MacCormack and Zach Ruhlin won the Club Championship to Dan Lawless and Sue MacCormack claiming the prize, respectively, in the seasonlong 1983 Wexford Cup. Some of Wexford’s most improved golfers

Hunter competed in the NC and SC Opens and did well in both. He also played well in the Carolinas Section Championship, finishing 26th out of 140+ players.

Congratulations once again to Bobby Blanken and his wife as they became new parents to a healthy baby boy back in July. And also congratulations to Hunter Miller, who successfully passed all his PGA schooling and became a PGA member, joining Scott Hunter and

BOBBY’S BASICS

Best methods for dealing with an uneven lie The driving range is a great place to work on your game and warm up before playing, but it doesn’t always paint the full picture of what excitement is to come during your round. On the course, you will find yourself with the golf ball above your feet or below your feet, from time to time. Check out these simple rules to give yourself a better chance to execute your shot in these situations.

BALL ABOVE YOUR FEET

Ball Above Your Feet Typically, you want to start by taking one extra club and choking up on the grip a little bit. Next, stand up a little bit taller and aim slightly right of your target (or aim left for left-handed players) to allow for the ball to work back towards the target. Now that you are ready to make the swing, I like to keep my weight slightly back and create a little bit of a flatter swing, almost as if it is halfway between a golf swing and swinging a baseball bat. (see diagram at top right)

To set up, take a little wider stance than you normally would and flex your knees slightly more as well. Next, take one extra club again, and aim left of the target (or aim right for left handed players) to allow for the ball to work back towards the target. The biggest keys after setting up are maintaining that extra knee flex during the swing and staying in your posture as best as you can.

Standing up (or straightening your back) during the downswing will cause you to mishit the shot, top it, or flare it right of your target. The shape of your swing will be almost opposite of when the ball is above your feet. You will want to create a steeper angle of attack into the ball to get the bottom of your swing lower through the impact zone. (see diagram at bottom right)

RECENT EVENTS Friday Night Lights | Friday, September 29th Team spirit abounded at this fun tailgate event. In addition to tennis and pickleball, participants played “tennis cornhole,” bantered about their favorite teams, and enjoyed time with friends and neighbors.

Ladies Doubles Tennis & Pickleball Tournament for American Cancer Society | Saturday, October 7th From Joyce Hollis, organizer of the event: The event had 119 participants between tennis and pickleball. Based on feedback from participants, the speaker, Dr. Tara Grahovac, breast oncology surgeon, was awesome. The event raised $34,669 with numbers still climbing.

Developing hand speed The Club Times • 10

Hand speed is an advantage in pickleball to get those overhead smashes, dinks, and ball direction changes. Here’s a drill that can help with hand-eye coordination as well as hand speed.

• Have you and your partner stand across from each other in the no volley zones (inside the kitchen line).

• Volley the pickleball back and forth with no bounces; Start at a slower pace then gradually increase speed as your reaction time improves.

• Set a goal of how many you each hit with no misses, then up the goal as you improve.

Boat Commissioning celebrates 11 vessels Our annual Boat Commissioning event is always fun as it allows us to help Wexford owners christen their new vessels into Wexford Yacht Club with breakaway bottles of champagne. That said, these bottles are now very tough to find on the open market so next year we will likely move to a rumthemed ceremony. However, just a few weeks ago, we commissioned 11 new vessels and, aside from a hatch of “no see ums,” we had perfect weather for the celebration. Congratulations to all the new boat captains and their families.

Lock Repair & Improvements In January, the lock will go through a scheduled and necessary refurbishment which takes place every ten years. This involves a substantial bit of work but is necessary so that it continues to operate properly, reliably, and safely. The good news is that it is a Wexford reserve-funded project (funds are already allocated to it) and it is scheduled for the January-February timeframe which is the least busy time for the lock throughout the year. The bi-annual channel dredging will be accomplished at the same time.

We ask for your patience as we get through these repairs. The work is to start on January 8th and finish by the end of February. Watch for periodic updates on scheduling, and call the Harbour Center anytime you have questions.

So, what’s involved? The lock doors are completely removed, taken to Savannah, sand-blasted, balanced and repainted (this time with different paint which will inhibit marine growth).

All of the rubber grommets and seals

are replaced. The hydraulic systems are flushed, inspected, repaired and tested, the pumps are serviced, the electrical components are inspected and upgraded and the mud in the bottom of the lock is dredged.

Additionally, the flushing gates are cleaned and serviced, the lock door sills (in the bottom of the lock) are refitted and replaced if necessary, and for this go-round, the hydraulic rams will be upgraded with certain parts that have better wear characteristics.

Winter Cocktail: Milk Punch

The Southern holiday tradition of milk punch is a milk-based beverage that commonly uses bourbon, whole milk, sugar, vanilla extract along with a dusting of spice, usually nutmeg.

Think of the cocktail like Eggnog without the egg.

It’s meant to be rich and creamy, so whole milk is the way to go here. Low-fat milk and certainly skim milk will produce a thinner, less satisfying drink, so it’s best to leave those for cereal.

There are 2 types of Milk Punch. The traditional clarified or English milk punch takes up to 2 months to make. Southerners are more apt to celebrate with the quicker Bourbon Milk Punch.

It is thought that milk punch was first created in the 1600s, reaching the peak of its popularity in the 1700s through the mid-1800s. Many famous people were known to be fond of this smooth-tasting libation. Ben Franklin created his own recipe for milk punch and enclosed it in a letter to one of his acquaintances in 1763.

Queen Victoria loved the beverage so much that she employed a special company to supply the royal family with the drink.

Steps 1. Add bourbon, whole milk, simple syrup, and vanilla extract into a shaker with ice and shake until well chilled.

2. Strain into a rocks glass, and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg and cinnamon stick.

Wexford Clubs

ETC A group of 13 Wexford ETC members recently made a three-day trip to Little St. Simons Island, Georgia.

The group was treated to naturalists’ programs and tours, gourmet meals, and lots of fun on the 11,000-acre natural preserve.

The perfect weather didn’t hurt, either!
