— ‘No Wake’ —
What does it really mean?
Perhaps you’ve noticed the No Wake sign on the lock doors entering Wexford Harbor. But what does “no wake” really mean? Starting at the beginning, “wake” refers to the waves that emit from the bow or stern of a boat. Wakes created by boats travel long distances through and across the water and carry a lot of energy. They can and do damage other boats, docks, and floats, as well as erode shorelines. Maritime and Admiralty Laws state that a boat’s Captain is financially responsible for any damage done by a wake generated by the boat he or she is driving.
Does “No Wake” equal “Idle Speed”? NO! Does “No Wake” mean you can go 5 knots, 7 knots, or 10 knots? NO!
Each boat is different. Many boats can make a damaging wake at idle speed, or even at 5 knots. It is the responsibility of the Captain and the person driving the boat to make sure their wake does not cause damage and is not capable of causing damage. If this means taking a boat in and out of gear to ensure it goes slow enough to prevent a damaging wake, then so be it.
USCG, SC DNR, and Beaufort County Sheriffs’ Office are stepping up wake enforcement in Broad Creek. In Wexford Harbour, please be considerate of your friends and neighbor’s boats. As you motor through the Harbour, make sure you look back at your wake and adjust your speed to minimize it. If the Harbour staff calls you on Channel 14 and asks you to slow down, it’s because they can see your wake’s effects. Don’t ignore them, they may be saving you from getting a repair bill for damage you may have done to your neighbor’s property. Remember, under the laws that govern the seas, you are responsible for your wake.
Wexford Junior Sailing program is up and running!

After Wexford purchased 4 Optimist class sailboats (the world-recognized boat for sailing instruction for kids) the Junior Sailing Program has started in Wexford Harbour. Eight Wexford kids are being taught the fundamentals of sailing under the guidance of certified instructors in the safety of our Harbour. Sailing is a tremendous sport that teaches way more than how to sail and handle a boat. It teaches teamwork, selfresponsibility, creative thinking, camaraderie, problemsolving, and leadership.
The current class is full, but additional classes are being scheduled for this summer and fall, so watch the e-blasts for scheduling.
