Welcome Dear Members: Spring is upon us and the club is bustling with activity and social vibrancy. It is a great time of year to enjoy the outdoors with all the amenities Wexford has to offer. April is a busy month of programming for your enjoyment so please be on the look out for many events in Clubhouse, on the course and courts, and around our harbour. We look forward to your participation, and reservations are always encouraged so we can properly prepare to serve you. Most recently we have seen an increase in activity and demand at our pool and pool bar, and I am excited to announce the future installation of kitchen equipment and additional staffing to better serve you pool-side. In the most recent Board of Directors meeting, it was approved to amend the current pool policies to prohibit outside food and beverage on the pool deck except for Mondays when the Clubhouse is closed. As always, and currently indicated in the pool policies, outside alcohol is always prohibited to protect Wexford’s liability and alcohol license. We appreciate your adherence to these policies as we welcome the opportunity to serve you at our pool bar. I am pleased to share that the Strategic Plan and Pickleball Court design was approved in the March Board of Directors Meeting. Please refer to this edition of Club Times for further information. We will display design boards around the club and tennis center for you to review the Pickleball architectural drawing at your leisure.

Ryan Spence Chief Operating Officer

Marvin Morrison and his team are diligently addressing the ongoing speeding and traffic violations in the community. In the month of February, the security team radared 714 vehicles of which 65% of them were within the speed limit and an additional 27% were within 5 mph over. Please continue to be aware of your speed when you are in Wexford as we will continue to be monitoring speed and traffic for the safety of all members, guests, and staff. The Irrigation Project is now complete on the golf course, and I commend Chris Neff and his team for remaining diligent with the schedule, budget and course playability. I want to further recognize the membership for their patience and understanding while we enhanced the infrastructure to support one of our most important assets. To the committees who assisted with this project and the overall guidance from the Board of Directors, on behalf of Chris Neff, his team and I, thank you for the collaboration and partnership to complete this capital project ahead of schedule and better than budget.

Stay Safe,

Ryan

Letter from the Board President Hello Neighbors, As I’m writing this, it’s finally warm outside, the flowers are blooming, grass is greening and pollen is in the air, so it must be springtime at beautiful Wexford! Not there yet, but much better – This time last year we we had weekly meetings to adjust our operations to the ever-changing Covid situation. Communities everywhere were trying to figure out the best way to deal with this worldwide situation that caught us all off-guard. A year later it was truly a pleasure to see a great turnout of Wexford neighbors enjoying each other’s company at our first Thursday Happy Hour in almost a year on March 25. It was outside at our still-new pool complex instead of inside the clubhouse as before, but the weather was perfect, the beverages flowed freely and good times had by all. We know we have a way to go before we get back to whatever “normal” will be going forward, but it’s great just to see our Wexford family having fun as a group again. To allow us to continue these group events, we ask that folks comply with the local health regulations as they evolve. Irrigation Project is Complete – The completion of the golf course irrigation project was celebrated on Friday, March 26 with the presentation of the “Golden Sprinkler” award to our Greens and Grounds Superintendent Chris Neff. This occasion was celebrated with a ceremonial sprinkler salute along the first fairway. Thanks to Chris, Ryan Spence and all that helped to bring this major project to completion a few weeks ahead of schedule and around $150,000 under budget. Good job by all. An Upgrade for Pickleball – Many of us have enjoyed being introduced to the game of pickleball on our temporary courts that were set up at the tennis center. The Board of Directors approved plans for development of 4 high quality pickleball courts adjacent to tennis courts 3 and 4. The project is discussed in more detail,

David Jackson President

including rendering of the future courts and clubhouse entrance relocation, elsewhere in this edition of Club Times. Pool Complex Dining is on the way – This year’s budget included installation of kitchen equipment at the popular pool bar and that equipment has been ordered with plans being made for installation soon. Our Food and Beverage staff is busy developing a new menu for pool side dining with delicious items that can be prepared on site at the pool bar and additional staff dedicated to service at the pool area will be there to take care of your food and beverage wishes. Watch for announcements as we get close to opening this service. And lastly, our management and staff are busy planning fun summer activities to enjoy here at Wexford so I look forward to seeing many of you at a fun event very soon.

All the best,

David

COVID SAFETY As we continue to face the challenges of COVID-19 cases, the Club’s safety protocols remain a top priority. It is important to reiterate the importance of our required COVID-19 policies: • Maintain social distance, wash hands and sanitize surfaces frequently.

• Self and household isolate if you, or someone in your house, tests positive or has known exposure.

3 • The Club Times

• Face masks are required by everyone within the Clubhouse and all common areas, even with a vaccine or antibodies.

Exciting News! The Pickleball Courts will be constructed in 2021. We will keep member up-to-date on the process as it begins. Right now, we are in the permitting phase. An aerial view drawing is available for members to view. You can see it online through the member portal, at the Clubhouse, or Tennis/Pickleball Center. The construction will include relocating the entry drive to the Clubhouse, creating a more direct approach and thus creating enough space for four pickleball courts. They will be hard courts with an exterior netting and LED lights. The total cost of the project is not to exceed $550,000, and the construction is anticipated to conclude by year end.

Summertime is right around the corner, which means many of our children and grandchildren are out and about, playing sometimes near the street, without attention to the potential danger vehicles pose. Their safety often depends on the skill and reaction time of the driver. Children are not the only potential hazards for driving on Wexford. Additional dangers include golf carts, bicyclists, joggers, walkers, pets, construction traffic and some very tight roadways. All drivers should use extra caution and drive within the posted speed limits in Wexford. Remember, Security has stepped up the enforcement of our traffic regulations, to include speeding and failing to stop at the stop signs. Remember, the leisure paths along the Wexford roadways are

Online Resources Security Forms and Policies are all posted online within the member Portal. for pedestrian and bicycle use only. Bicycles must yield to those walking on a pathway, and should take extra caution while riding on a roadway. As a reminder, parking is not allowed on any roadway, and any special event, delivery, tree removal, or other needs to park along a roadway must be preapproved by Security, who will ensure safe travel and proper access for emergency vehicles. Any approved parking on a roadway will be limited to that area only.

Spring has sprung!

he call of the sea is beginning to make itself heard, and for me it’s been yelling since early January. The fish are jumping, the breeze is brisk, and the water temperature is starting to rise slowly. Sunshine is a common occurrence, and we are now shedding jackets, sweaters, and fleece for… dare I say? SHORTS. Neither of which our northern cousins are remotely close to considering. Boating is once again paramount in our minds, so before you venture out, make sure to inspect your equipment on

board. Take those Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) out and give them a wash, make sure they are in good condition and if you find one damaged or torn, replace it. Your life may depend on a PFD one day. Dig out your first aid kit, replenish Band-Aids and burn cream, and make sure you have emergency sun block on board for those that think they can tan but really do not.

Your Harbour and Yacht Club Committee is excited to introduce the Wexford Boater Ambassador Program as a means of highlighting and promoting our beautiful harbour and local waterways, and enhance the new member onboarding process, two issues identified in our recent Annual Survey that could be improved. We are reaching out to all Wexford boat owners to solicit your interest in being part of a Boating Ambassador pool of volunteers to host new and

prospective members aboard your vessel for a quick tour through the harbour, a short ride up to Shelter Cove or perhaps a cocktail cruise down to Harbour Town and back. The idea is that we introduce new members and even those who may be interested in Wexford to meet our “boat-minded” residents and show off our extraordinary facilities and harbour. If you have interest in volunteering as a Wexford Boating Ambassador, please notify Mark Dryden.

The Return of DockTails! The FIRST DockTails of 2021 (and since 2019) is this Tuesday, April 6 at the Harbour Center Terrace. What is Docktails? This is a fantastic and fun community event for all Wexford Yacht Club Members

(that means you) to kick-off the new year of Yacht Club festivities. Bring your drink of choice and an appetizer to share and join in the camaraderie of our waterfront lifestyle! Commodore Peter Carlson will give

a brief introduction to this year’s Yacht Club calendar to let everyone know the excellent yachting events planned for this year. Please join us. It’s cocktails, on the docks — it’s DOCKTAILS!

continued from previous page Check the engine oil and the coolant and have a look at the hull. Does it need antifoul or just a good clean? It’s time to get either done. Maybe give those topsides a polish and clean out all those lockers. Remove the empties left over from all those sunset cruises and replenish for the ones ahead. Say “hi” to your fellow boaters, they are part of your tribe and always have helpful suggestions or experience you can draw on. Maybe they have already been out and noticed a new shoal, or can you add to the local knowledge bank we all draw from? Do a little study, read a magazine, see what is new for your boat or even look for your next boat, maybe buy your first. The internet is a wonderful resource. One of my favorites is watching the boater “fails”, purely for instructional reasons of course.

So what are you waiting for? Get out on the water, and

I shall raise a tot of rum to wish you all “Fair Winds and (gently) Following Seas.”

RINGER-RINGER CHAMPS

A

pril is one of the best months for golfers in the Hilton Head community. The sun’s shining and the weather is excellent, and the Masters is played just a short drive down the road. Once the excitement of Augusta ends, the golfing world comes to Hilton Head for the RBC Heritage. Last year, the Heritage was played in June because of Covid, and the PGA Tour professionals made easy work of the soft summertime greens, coupled with little wind, resulting in record scoring. This year the event is back in April and the course should have some bite. I would be surprised to see 22-under win like last year. Did you know that the very first winner of the RBC Heritage in 1969 was Arnold Palmer, shooting 1-under? For his victory, he received $20,000. Compare Palmer’s 1969 winning check to Webb Simpson’s 2020 check of $1,278,000. The RBC Heritage has a rich history of winners, such as Nicklaus, Palmer, Tom Watson, Love, Stewart and many more. I can’t wait to watch this year’s event and see who gets the plaid jacket on Sunday!

Congratulations to the 2021 Men’s Ringer-Ringer Champions, Vince Abatemarco and Jeff Myers!

IMPORTANT SPRING DATES

Tips from the Golf Pro The Club Times • 12

How to avoid topping the ball with fairway woods: • Swing easy and relaxed. Avoid hitting as hard as possible. Instead go for a 70 to 80 percent swing. • Ideally, you "sweep the ball off the floor." • Let your arms stretch out to avoid buckling or chicken wings • Have proper weight transfer. We want to feel our weight shift to the back leg in the backswing, and then to our front leg in the follow through.

PICKLEBALL TIP: Make your returns!

The return of serve should be the easiest shot of the point. The serving side HAS to let the ball bounce, so any return of serve IN will work. The best place to aim your return is the middle of the Center Service line. This is the biggest area of the court, plus the middle will confuse your opponent.

TENNIS TIP: Change your spots

If you and your partner are having trouble holding serve, mix up your positioning. There are many ways to position the server and the net player to make it harder for your opponents to return your serve. Changing positions will create easier opportunities for free points. Try lining up Australian to take away a strong cross court return. Start both back for returners that hit strong hard returns or lobs. Try crossing sides after the serve has been hit to confuse the returner. Don’t be afraid to try new and different ways to hold serve!

Wexford Foundation News

L

Meet the Grants Committee

ast year saw outstanding contributions by Wexford members and a record total of $258,000 was raised by the Wexford Foundation. It was the task of the Grants Committee, under the leadership of Co-Chairs Cyndi Duvall and Mark Brown, to identify candidate agencies, determine those that would be invited to apply for funding and to consider the needs of each one individually. The hard-working members of the 2020 Grants Committee, in addition to Cindy and Mark, were Terry Baehr, Bonnie Burnette, Sharon Church, Liz Fass, Nicki Gilboy, David Hay, and Teresa Kelly. Recognizing the substantial needs of local charities during an incredibly difficult year, the Grants Committee selected over 40 non-profit agencies for consideration. Committee members were then assigned to each charity to review their management processes, operating procedures, financial management and their program needs during the coming year. This process, which entailed personal or virtual meetings, resulted in 36 charities submitting detailed applications for funding for specific programs or projects. Final grant applications were then reviewed and rated by the Grants Committee before submitting their recommendations to the Foundation Trustees for approval in December. The grants process, which entails a significant amount of work by the Grants Committee, aims to ensure that all Wexford donations are used effectively. A follow up process provides additional monitoring and confirmation to ensure that members’ funds are used responsibly.

The Club Times • 18

Normally, the major part of the Grants Committee work is complete by the end of the year, but not this time. In past years, the Foundation has hosted a luncheon each February to present grant awards, but with the pandemic this was not possible. So, over the past few weeks, Grant Committee members have joined with Wexford donors in visiting and meeting with grant recipients and personally handing out award checks. This has given a number of our donors the opportunity to see first-hand the impact which the Wexford Foundation and our generous members have on the local community.
