An interview with Carrie Fisher When asked to have her publicity agent send photos, Carrie Fisher doesn’t miss a beat. “Sure,” she quips. “I hope you like the nude photos, especially.” It’s that sense of humor and irreverence that the actress, novelist and screenwriter will bring to the Victoria Theatre stage for the next two weeks when she presents “Wishful Drinking,” her one-woman Broadway show based on her own colorful life. The play will be in town from Tuesday through April 22 and was the winner of the 2010 Outer Critics’ Circle Award in New York. “I’ve probably drawn some challenges to me just to practice my sense of humor, just give it some exercise,” she said during a phone interview. Among those life challenges are addiction, a diagnosis of a bipolar illness and divorce—including her own divorce from musician Paul Simon. Carrie Fisher jokes about them all.
Fisher also is scheduled to talk about her life at Ohio State’s Wexner Center for the Arts in May, and will speak and sign books Friday at Books & Co. at The Greene in Beavercreek. Her most recent book, “Shockaholic,” references her experiences with electric shock treatments. After one of her Dayton performances, Fisher will meet with members of the Behavioral Services departments from Premier Health Partners and Samaritan Behavioral Health.... …What has saved her, she believes, is her openness to any sort of help that might be available to her—medication, all forms of therapy. “There’s nothing I won’t try,” Fisher says. “It either works or it doesn’t.”
“I don’t think anything is for everybody, but I believe in the 12-Step programs; they are basically a Christian ethic of helping others,” she says. “It’s about being honest, a good person.” Fisher, who has received a number of awards for her commitment to fighting mental illness and the stigmas associated with it, has appeared on the Senate floor urging state legislators to increase government funding for people living with mental health issues. She says her one-woman show allows her to laugh at her pain. “I think a lot of humor comes from pain,” she says. “I laugh at the experiences I’ve had and talk about what I’ve learned from them and how I’ve coped.” Although not every child grows up with a laundress and a projection room and begins working in films and nightclubs at age 13, Fisher says she wasn’t immune from the common concerns of childhood—wondering if you’re fat, wondering if you said something dumb. Her own daughter, she says, somehow managed to avoid many of the pitfalls that have plagued her life. Billie, now 19, is studying at New York University. On Carrie Fisher’s bucket list? “I had been obsessed with going to Northern China for the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, and it was awesome!” She says she’d also like to clear up any outstanding agitation that exists between herself and anyone from her past. “My goal now,” she concludes, “is being a good friend, a good daughter, a good mother.”

“If it’s true that you’re only as sick as your secrets, then I’ll be healthy for a very long time,” she says. “I was ashamed about a lot of these things for years, but then they rule you. If I can make light of these heavy things, then I have problems, but they don’t have me.”
She believes it’s best to find other people who’ve faced similar issues and find a community of people that have had some of the same experiences “so that you don’t feel like the village idiot.”

Wexner education facility to take wing Within a few years, young people will find much more to do and learn at the Wexner Center for the Arts. In its first expansion since its founding in 1989, the Ohio State University institution plans an education facility next to the arts center at 27 W. 17th Ave.—a below-ground space occupied for now by the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. The cartoon library is expected to move by the fall of 2013 into a larger and more prominent space in Sullivant Hall, a campus building being renovated.
The cost of the project is estimated at $2.5 million to $3 million, with an initial grant of $500,000 already secured from the American Electric Power

A group of “leading thinkers in design and art education,” she said, will be asked to “imagine what kind of habitat is conducive to learning.” Geldin will join Shelly Casto, director of education at the center, in meeting today for the first in a series of periodic sessions with a group of national leaders in design and education. “We essentially have a blank slate, but we don’t simply want to replicate the educational spaces of other institutions,” Geldin said. “We aim to create a truly innovative habitat for discovery and learning—one that complements but doesn’t duplicate other such resources in Columbus.”

The new education wing—to be named later—is to have more than 7,200 square feet and include classrooms, offices, art studios, computer labs, meeting and storage space, a gallery, a library and a learning lab for teenagers. And, as part of what is becoming a growing priority for the Wexner Center, after-school programs and activities for teens will be offered.

A multimedia theater show about the contemporary foreclosure crisis through the lens of The Grapes of Wrath, it premiered at the Wex in October 2011 and is on its way to New York in October 2012.

Annie Leibovitz Exhibition Coming to Wexner Center This Fall The Wexner Center announced today that they will be hosting an exhibition this fall devoted to the work of photographer Annie Leibovitz. Over 200 photos will be on display throughout the entirety of the gallery space at The Wex. The majority of the exhibition consists of work from Leibovitz’s “Master Set”, which is a large collection of images that she personally chose in 2009, and oversaw the printing of large archival prints for the set. The Wexner Center will be the first institution to display the Master Set as a whole.

‘More American Photographs’ offers a glimpse of America’s recession “In the 1930s and ‘40s, the federal Farm Security Administration ran a photography program headed by Roy E. Stryker to document the plight of rural farm workers affected by the Great Depression. Courtesy the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.
It launched the careers of many extraordinary photographers, including Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange and Gordon Parks…. Inspired by the mission of this program, curator Jens Hoffmann incorporated those classic images alongside newly commissioned works from contemporary photographers assigned to capture life in an America reeling from the so-called Great Recession. The result: “More American Photographs,” an exhibition of 100 works from past and present at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver… The exhibit will travel to the Wexner Center for the Arts in Ohio in early 2013.”

3-D goes Off the Grid at Ohio State’s Wexner Center Off the Grid put its attendees’ senses on high alert as art, food, drinks and music collided. 15 media overview / Fall 2011–Spring 2012
The Wexner Center for the Arts throws Off the Grid annually to raise money for Wexner Center education programs, which aim to educate grades K-12 in art, video production and writing. “All the money raised through ticket sales and raffle tickets goes to the education program,” said Erik Pepple, community outreach and marketing manager for the Wexner Center. Tickets were sold out and priced at $55. Raffle tickets were $10 for one or $50 for six. Prizes ranged from two American Airlines tickets to gift certificates to Columbus’ The Refectory Restaurant and Bistro.
This year’s event was 3-D-themed with three dimensions of the Wexner Center occupied: Heirloom Café, Mershon Auditorium lobby and the black box performance space, which was set up like a nightclub.

Wexner jazz series to set a cozy scene Jazz lovers value intimate settings, artist diversity and the chance to discover something new.
Key among the results, according to the Ohio State University center, was fans’ desired atmosphere: cozy, casual and close to the onstage action. “It reinforced how important the feel for the room is—to get that kind of connection to this particular art form,” said Chuck Helm, the center’s director of performing arts and a research partner facility in the audience study. 20 media overview / Fall 2011–Spring 2012
To that end, the center will have seven jazz shows during a five-month period, hosting six of them with a cabaret-style setup in the building’s 200-capacity performance space with an on-site bar (the venue doesn’t offer alcohol at rock shows). The center, Helm said, typically hosts about five jazz artists a year using the existing club-inspired seating and will use feedback from the series to help guide programming. “Each show presents opportunities to bring new people into the room,” he said. The Donny McCaslin Group on Thursday kicked off the concerts. Doris Duke Foundation Announces Inaugural Doris Duke Artists, Receiving $225,000 Grants; Anne Bogart, Rinde Eckert Among Recipients Provided to honorees through a process of peer review—no applications are accepted—the grants are not tied to any specific project, but are made as investments in the artists’ personal and professional development and future work. To qualify for consideration, all of the Doris Duke Artists must have won grants, prizes or awards on a national level for at least three different projects over the past ten years, with at least one project having received support from a DDCF-funded program.

Fischer’s Fab Five (the other four) “In a project co-commissioned by the Wexner Center for the Arts, The Great Flood combines the talents of Grammy-Award winning jazz guitarist and composer Bill Frisell and Obie-winning filmmaker Bill Morrison. The film is a portrait, using archival footage, of the Mississippi River flood of 1927, also including images from last year’s flood. Frisell, along with Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen, will perform Frisell’s original score at a screening of the film Saturday, March 31, in the Thurber Theatre at OSU’s Drake Union.”

Jazz work recalls deadly Oklahoma race riot For years, the 1921 race riot that devastated Tulsa, Okla., was a hush-hush subject.
The quartet, featuring three Tulsa natives, will perform the critically acclaimed Race Riot Suite on Saturday at the Wexner Center for the Arts on the Ohio State University campus….

The group introduced the work a year ago. On tour, the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (its name is completely random) hires local musicians to augment its sound. Joining the group for the Wexner show will be two Ohio State University students: Jonathan Lampley on trumpet and Daniel White on saxophone, as well as trombonist Evan Oberla, a Grandview Heights native and a 2009 OSU graduate.
