17 Butler St, TULLY, 4068 1295 & IGGsToo, Banyan Plaza CARDWELL & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY CARDWELL Cemetery is the oldest cemetery on the tropical Queensland coast, as the oldest monuments in Cardwell pre-date those found in Townsville and other settlements north of Bowen.

The written records of burials in the cemetery from 1864 to 1930 are in a handwritten Burial Register,

In the earliest years, gravestones and graves lay at a different angle from all the other graves. They had no numbers, whilst some were unrecorded in the handwritten register.

Later, a more formal system was implemented, and before the Cardwell Shire Council took over the administration in 1947, a Board of Trustees administered the cemetery.

As a reflection of early settlement in the port/ township, many of the burials registered show overseas places of origin, whilst a significant percentage of burials registered were of infants and young children born to the founding pioneers of the township.

The first burial recorded is of Lucy Margaret McGhie, aged six months, female, origin of birth South Brisbane on October 1, 1864, daughter of William Acton and Caroline Amelia.

In 1876, the burial of Marie Catherine Gielis, aged one year and eight months, the beloved daughter of Achille Auguste Gielis, who was in customs service, an engineer and sailor, and his wife Catherine Gielis (nee Flay).

Also recorded are the children of Jane Fratson

Adelaide, aged 11, and Thomas Lewis, aged 6, died eight days apart of fever in 1885.

On May 15, 1885, a record of the burial of Alfred John Thorn, aged four years and 13 days, the third son of Mary Stuart Thorn (nee Dallacy) and James Thorn, storekeeper, bricklayer/builder in the township, who became the first elected Chairman of the Divisional Board.

The Cardwell & District Historical Society, a volunteer, not-for-profit organisation, was formed in 1985 to stop the demolition of the original 1892 Town Hall.

Under the inaugural President, the late Robbie Sing, the Society instead began restoration with $18,000 in Bicentenary funding.

The original Hall, which housed the Divisional Board, was the hub of community life for eight decades before being re-dedicated in 1988 as a public library and museum.

At this time, it was named in honour of Johann Christian Hubinger (1835-1908), a Cardwell pioneer farmer and businessman who served 15 terms as local government chairman.

‘They want farming abolished’: Katter labels Govt cattle compensation refusal as ‘shameful’ OFFICE OF BOB KATTER FEDERAL MEMBER FOR KENNEDY FORMER cattleman and North Queensland MP Bob Katter has drawn a harrowing comparison between the Federal Government’s actions in relation to outstanding live cattle trade compensation and allowing convicted criminals to roam the country.

The Katter’s Australian Party MP has supported the cattle industry since the historic decision in 2011 when live trade of cattle to Indonesia was banned by a then Labor Government and labelled the Government’s recent decision to refuse compensation as “absolutely shameful.”

The Federal Government had a deadline of Friday, January 19 to accept the industry’s settlement offer of $500m, with its refusal likely to take the matter back to the courts.

Mr Katter said regardless of where the matter was settled, taxpayers would be footing the bill for the

government’s mistakes, with further court action only increasing the burden on the public purse without actually addressing the aggrieved cattle industry.

“The courts have clearly held that the government owes these people for compensation for the inexcusable government action against them,” Mr Katter said.

“To me, it’s clear they want farming abolished in this country, and if they did care not only would they have paid these farmers their dues, but like most other countries offer subsidies and support to ensure agriculture remains viable.

Mr Katter said it was interesting the government had the backbone to defy the courts’ orders to compensate graziers, yet recently, had shown no backbone when the courts released convicted criminals into Australian communities.

“Meanwhile, governments are quite happy to impose the most dreadful ugliness and destruction upon the Australian landscape, hundreds of miles of plastic square plates - wind farms - in place of our nature

FRESH from the Brisbane Academy, five first-year constables received postings to Innisfail Police Station and started general duties last month.

Constables William Kitchin, Harry Deane, Cody Lane, Micah Olsson and Tristan Watcham have taken up placements at Innisfail.

During their eight months of intense training at the QPS Academy, recruits covered driver training, firearms, computers, domestic violence, mental health, arrests, drink driving, tasers, traffic crashes, physical skills, as well as heaps of legislation.

For the next 12 months, these firstyear constables will practice skills learned at the academy and acquire new skills as they face the challenges of 'real-world' policing.

Experienced Field Training Officers, Sergeant Nathan Taylor, Senior Constable Dan Rodokal, along with Constables Lloyd Badger, Melissa Patrick and Kellen Briggs will collaborate with the new constables and mentor them in community policing.

The officers will work both day and night shifts, rotations and spend time working in specialist sections, such

as the Child Protection Investigation Unit, Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), crime scenes, custody, domestic violence and prosecutions.

Constable Kitchin, aged 24, was born and raised in Brisbane. He completed a degree in Science, majoring in psychology, and then worked as a consultant for an environmental company.

Constable Deane, aged 23, also born and raised in Brisbane, completed a three-year Bachelor of Justice, majoring in Criminology and Policing. Before joining the QPS, he worked as an electricity meter reader.

He holds a Diploma in Accounting, and for three years, he worked in Australia Post's complaints department, then entered the QPS. work ethic, being well-organised, and excellent communication skills are essential qualities to be a good police officer.

When not policing, the FYCs are looking forward to experiencing what the Cassowary Coast and surrounding regions have to offer in the way of fishing, hiking, camping, swimming, sightseeing at waterfalls and beaches, as well as enjoying sports and mountain bike riding.

Constable Lane, 22, moved to Brisbane three years ago from Hobart.

He started a carpentry apprenticeship in Hobart, then transferred to Brisbane, and worked as a project manager in construction before he joined the QPS. Constable Olsson, 19, was born and raised in Brisbane. He is from a family of seven and worked on his family's 300head cattle farm.

While in Year 12, he applied for the QPS, then worked as a forklift driver at Domino's Pizza before his acceptance into the academy.

CROCODILES, snakes, lizards and birds took over Cassowary Coast Libraries with kids going wild for an animal encounter activity which attracted a record crowd.

The first event of its kind to be held at the Libraries, Roaming Wild Animal Encounters entertained a captive audience of 120 people in Innisfail. Events took place in Cardwell and Tully as well.

“Roaming Wild Animal Encounters is a delightful experience where children can learn and get hands on with exotic animals,” Cr. Tschui said.

by Council.

This event was just one of many school holiday activities held at Cassowary Coast Libraries, including movies, digital workshops and art sessions.

Mount Fox Energy Park Response to “The Unexpected forming of Michael Creek Mt Fox Action Group” SARI RUSSO THE Mount Fox Energy Park (MFEP) would like to provide a response and correct information in last week’s article.

According to representative Dalitta Wright, Community and Stakeholder Manager for MFEP Mount Fox: “At 300MW, the Mt Fox battery is a mid-sized energy storage facility.

Following is a sample of just some of the current batteries and battery projects larger than MFEP: Sun Cable22 000 MW, Goyder South - 900 MW, Waratah Super Battery 850 MW, Eraring -700MW, Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub- 600 MW, Golden Plains – 600 MW, Mount Piper -500 MW, Wallerwang -500 MW, Tomago -500MW, Great Western500MW, Wurdong – 400 MW https:// reneweconomy.com.au/big-batterystorage-map-of-australia/” “Mount Fox Energy Park including the wind farm and dedicated battery storage was previously approved by State Government in 2019.”

“The wind farm project layout is currently being finalised. Preliminary models estimate approximately 47 turbines will be constructed. There will be a temporary construction area of approximately 240 hectares. This includes all access roads and the BESS installation. Much of this area will be rehabilitated post-construction.

The

location of all turbines will be outside the State Government regulated 1.5 kilometres from any residence.”

“To advance the BESS, a separate DA has been applied for and signage, as required for the application was placed on all road reserves from January 5, 2024. On January 6, representatives of the MFEP project team held a community meeting at Mount Fox. The signage and notifications to landowners with direct boundaries was the subject of considerable discussion at this meeting. The Development Application public consultation period commenced on January 10.”

Given the level of community interest and to ensure technical compliance with statutory requirements relating to public notification, residents and community will see the date for submissions to Hinchinbrook Shire Council has changed to February 16, 2024. During this period, we encourage all interested parties to reach out to the project team, ask questions and express their concerns.

Chair Kim Armstrong of Michael Creek Mt Fox Action Group said, “We knew the windmills were being constructed and we understood that

there was nothing we could do about it as the state government had chosen to approve the construction of windmills without seeking the approval of people in the area first. We did not know until seeing the signage posted that a BESS was being constructed in the area. But from the meeting on January 6, we were given the strong impression that there is nothing we can do about it.”

“With all the native rainforests being destroyed for renewable energy projects why was I fighting so hard back in the 1980 to protect our rainforest. It feels so defeating.”

“The MFEP project team understands there will be concerns from the community and this is why, in this round of consultation two community meetings were conducted December 18 and January 6, with a commitment to continue discussions in the future. “ “The team encourage all interested parties to contact the project team at info@mtfoxenergypark.com.au. Some residents have taken the opportunity to directly contact the Community and Stakeholder Engagement Manager, contact details were provided to all attendees of the meeting and shared again when the community update was provided to attendees.”

Green Beans with Parmesan Garlic Breadcrumbs Serves: 4 Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes 1 ½ serves per portion Ingredients 400g green beans, ends trimmed 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced ½ cup wholemeal breadcrumbs Black pepper, to taste 3 tablespoons parmesan, finely grated Method STEAM beans in a stovetop steamer or microwave for around 5 minutes, or until tender-crisp.

HEAT oil in a frypan over medium heat.

ADD garlic, stirring until fragrant, around 1-2 minutes.

STIR in breadcrumbs and pepper, cooking until golden and crispy, around 3-5 minutes.

TOSS the breadcrumbs with the green beans and top with parmesan.

Caretaker period for Local Government Elections Prior to an election, Councillors and Council officers enter into a caretaker period, avoiding actions and decision making which could be perceived as influencing voters or having a significant impact on the incoming Council.

During this period, Councillors and Council officers must ensure that the ordinary business of Council continues in a responsible, transparent and legally-compliant manner.

The Local Government Election is to be held on Saturday 16 March 2024 and Caretaker Period arrangements will be in place from 29 January 2024 until the new Council is sworn in, in possibly March 2024.

CASSOWARY COAST REGIONAL COUNCIL FLEGLER cousins from Tully who have represented Australia in Netball and Rugby League in 2023 have been recognised by Council for their outstanding achievements in sport.

Playing for Australia in the 18 and Under Netball team of the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games Fast5 competition, Sasha-May Flegler became an inaugural champion when Australia won gold against South Africa.

Thomas Flegler’s meteoric rise through the ranks of NRL in 2023 saw him represent Queensland in the State of Origin, and Australia in the 2023 Pacific Championships.

Cassowary Coast Mayor Mark Nolan presented them both with a plaque of recognition last year at the December Local Government Meeting in their home town of Tully, saying that it’s not every year that a regional township of 3,000 people produces two international sports stars.

Story Cloth Donation Pays Tribute to Hmong Community In Cassowary Coast CASSOWARY COAST REGIONAL COUNCIL A piece of the Cassowary Coast’s multicultural history has been preserved thanks to the donation of a Hmong Story Cloth to Cassowary Coast Library and Museum Services in Innisfail.

‘Escape from Laos’ was donated from the personal collection of Juleanne Sweeney, an intricate cultural artwork embroidered on cloth depicting the Vietnam War. The piece was created

by Innisfail resident Mrs Yong Yia Lor during her stay in a refugee camp in Thailand in the 1980s.

Mrs Sweeney handed over the piece during a gathering of Hmong community members and James Cook University representatives in the Innisfail Library.

Intricate scenes are woven into the Story Cloth on display at Innisfail Library

“ ’Escape from Laos’ toured Australia in 1997 through major galleries around the nation to the High Court in Canberra and is featured in the James Cook University publication ‘Migrants from the Mountains;” Mrs Sweeney said.

“I bought it from Hmong embroiderers in Innisfail in the late 1980’s and I’m pleased to see it on display at the Innisfail Library as an acknowledgement of an important event in the region’s history.”

Councillor for Community and Culture Trudy Tschui gratefully received the artwork on behalf of Cassowary Coast Library and Museum Services.

“The Hmong have a rich tradition of imbuing textiles with meaning and following the end of the Vietnam War a new textile art evolved – the Story Cloth,” Cr. Tschui said.

“The Cassowary Coast community has the immense honour of accepting Mrs Sweeney’s donation of the Story Cloth ‘Escape from Laos’ as an acknowledgement of the contribution of the Hmong community in our region.”

Facing political and religious persecution in the aftermath of the Vietnam war, around 300,000 Hmong fled their homeland spending years in refugee camps before resettling in

communities like Innisfail.

Typically created in the refugee camps in Thailand, Story Cloths featured a unique pictorial representation of individual experiences, depicting the history and folklore of the Hmong people, pastoral life in the mountains of their homeland, as well as wartime and migrant experiences.

‘Escape from Laos’ is on display in the Innisfail Library alongside a copy of ‘Migrants from the Mountains’ where it’s featured as part of the costume and art of the Hmong People of Southeast Asia and Australia.

Spooky fun at South Johnstone State School's Pre-Prep Open Day

STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIA GIRGENTI LATE in 2023, South Johnstone State School hosted a Pre-Prep Open Day for children who will start Prep in 2024.

Goodstart Early Learning South Innisfail and Goodstart Early Learning Innisfail brought along ten children and 22 children from C & K Mourilyan District Kindergarten, with parent packs given to all children.

This event, organised by Acting Principal Julia Heywood, allowed parents to see all the school offers.

A highlight of the day was the authentic Haunted House made by Year 3 - 6 students out of boxes supplied by Barry Heywood, who also helped set up the day.

South Johnstone State School Year 3 - 6 students also designed the event posters.

The day's activities included a jumping castle, water play, fire brigade activities, potion making, a Queensland Police Service visit, slime, games, play dough, necklace making, wooden crafts, sensory play, mask making, and a photo booth. There was also a free sausage sizzle and Super Dooper ice blocks.

SJSS staff and students, a local police officer and fire fighters at the SJSS Pre-Prep Open Day.

This Pre-Prep Open Day helped parents understand how the school operates, celebrated student outcomes/achievements, provided opportunities for cultural, sporting, and social celebrations, and assisted children's transition to Prep by familiarising them with school routines and staff.

South Johnstone State School has an excellent student-to-teacher ratio. It offers a range of programs, including educational intervention, resilience, robotics/STEM, Junior Mamu Rangers, Story Dogs, and Breakfast Club.

Clean energy and more help for Queensland farmers

OFFICE OF THE HON. MICK DE BRENNI MP MINISTER FOR ENERGY AND CLEAN ECONOMY JOBS • Updates to the Queensland Development Code cut construction costs and reduces red tape for farm buildings and vehicle storage farm sheds.

• It’s now easier to meet fire-related water requirements for farm buildings through additional supply options.

• New water quality requirements protect Queensland firefighters and residents.

Queensland primary producers can now save as much as $100,000 in construction costs thanks to an updated building code that cuts red tape.

Rather than needing to build a special water storage tank for particular farm buildings, farmers can now opt to use water from dams, lakes and bores.

Cost savings will also extend to structures defined as vehicle storage farm sheds, as they no longer require a specialised on-site water supply due to the very low fire risk.

In the event of bushfires, firefighters now have the flexibility to draw water from either water storage tanks or from additional on-site water supply options.

To ensure the water they use is suitable, the updated code sets the water quality standard for firefighting purposes, protecting firefighters as well.

Farm buildings using additional on-site water supply

options will need to be registered with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to ensure firefighters there are other sources of water so they are best prepared to respond to potential incidents.

“These common sense reforms, yet still ensure farm buildings meet minimum fire and safety standards suitable for their everyday use, but can save a rural producer up to $100,000.

“The improved code provides consistency in how building work for contemporary farm buildings is assessed, as well as confidence for firefighters who know the water available to them is safe to use so they can do their job.”

Quotes attributable to Mayor of Hinchinbrook Shire Council, Mr Ramon Jayo: “The updates to the building code are a win-win situation for everyone involved.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to have consistency with the legislation, as it means all farmers will immediately comply without having to outlay an enormous amount of money to construct a building or storage shed.

“And it also means our expensive machinery won’t be left out in the weather!”

Quotes from Nick Dametto: Hinchinbrook MP and Katter’s Australian Party Deputy Leader Nick Dametto said the revised code was a common-sense approach that removed unnecessary regulations from basic machinery shed builds that carry minimal risk of fire hazards.

“This new alignment between the QDC and the NCC makes it more affordable for farmers who need to build a shed over 500 square metres to protect their farm equipment,” Mr Dametto said.

“Cane farms use millions of dollars of heavy equipment and here in North Queensland you can’t just leave it sitting out in the rain.

“Thanks must go to Minister de Brenni for seeing these changes through as well as all the departmental staff who were involved in making sure these changes could be put in place.”

Councils must do more on pest management CANEGROWERS CHAIRMAN, OWEN MENKENS FOOTAGE of ‘rafts’ of Red Imported Fire Ants being swept along by floodwaters in the Rocky Point district and news reports of a nest being discovered near Wardell, 100 kms south of the Queensland border, has left the general public considering something they don’t often think about – biosecurity.

For farmers, biosecurity is always front of mind. After all, outbreaks of invasive pests, weeds or diseases can potentially cost growers thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, of dollars.

We are often on the frontline of biosecurity breaches that can put our farms, livelihoods, and even our industry at risk.

That’s why growers across all ag sectors pay significant sums through annual levies to fund industry and farmbased biosecurity protection measures.

However, when it comes to the Federal Government’s proposed biosecurity levy on farmers, we’re saying enough is enough.

What the government is proposing is not what we traditionally understand as a levy, where those contributing have some oversight of how that money is spent.

Instead, funds from this new levy would disappear into a black hole in Canberra, where we would have no idea how or where the government uses them. That’s not a levy; that’s a tax.

And what’s worse, it’s a tax on the wrong people.

We agree the government needs to pump additional funds and resources into boosting biosecurity measures.

Still, they should first look to the cause of many of our biosecurity breaches – importers and shipping companies – not to the farmers whose businesses are threatened by such breaches.

However, the federal government is not the only one that needs to reevaluate its approach to biosecurity. Many of our councils at the local level also need to step up and make biosecurity a priority.

The most effective efforts for controlling weeds and pest animals are generated locally. This is why every local government needs to be driving for greater success in pest management.

Local governments need to ensure their biosecurity plans are current and

that they have identified the highestpriority pests with input from farmers.

Clearly, to do this, Councils need adequate resources and support to allow them to be the powerful coordinator of biosecurity surveillance and response.

Many growers feel we are losing the battle with priority pests such as feral pigs, rats, and fire ants and that local government should be empowered to do more to work with land managers to turn this around.

In the lead-up to the March elections, CANEGROWERS will call on local governments to commit to more collective and well-coordinated efforts that will reduce damage to crops and wildlife habitat.

This would be a win-win for the whole community.

HAPPY New Year to all members and supporters. So far, in 2024, bowlers have had limited time on the green due to harsh weather conditions.

Congratulations to Innisfail’s Barry Wallis Memorial Shield teams who went through undefeated and brought the Shield home where it belongs.

Peter Smith, Sergio Dalla Pozza, Mark Elliott, Alf Siliato, Wayne O’Neill, Michael de Vries, Steve Stoter and Ian Humphreys made up Innisfail’s winning team.

A huge thank you to Gordon Goes for his time and effort in getting this

competition played after a few weeks of harsh weather and cancellations.

This week, an Innisfail team travelled to Babinda Bowls Club to contest the Sam Rinaudo Memorial Shield.

Clubs can field one side each, consisting of pairs, triples and fours, on January 26/27, with January 28 as a spare day.

Round-robin sectional play will occur on Friday, January 26, at Babinda, West Cairns and Atherton, with the semi-finals and finals on Saturday.

Innisfail Bowls Club received a nomination for a Cassowary Coast Regional Council Australia Day award in the events section for last year’s centenary celebrations.

NEWS with Tony Mossop SWELTERING days dominate our current weather pattern. However, some reef fishermen took windows of opportunity to venture out to our main reef systems.

Generally, fishing the first quarter of a new moon as the tides are building will result in better-than-average fishing, and last week was no exception. Some very good-sized trout and a few nice red-throat emperors were caught. With the extra run in the tides, fishing without an electric motor would have been hard work.

It seems one or two trout came off a bommie, and then a shift to the next spot was required. Some fishermen reported having to make six or seven shifts for a morning’s fishing.

In around the islands, because of the heat, most fishermen left as early as possible in the morning, returning home before lunch, trying to avoid the afternoon heat.

“A crocodile has been reportedly hanging around the Clump Point boat ramp, so be very careful launching and retrieving your boat.”

Good trout were reported, along with some nice grassy sweetlip. Good finger marks were also caught on the tide changes with some lovely golden grunter.

Casting swim baits such as the yozuri switch bait on the reef flats produced some exceptional island trout throughout the week. Spear fishermen have known that big trout love to push up into two or three meters of water over broken rocky reef flats, chasing bait fish, crabs, and even crayfish.

Freshwater runoff is still everywhere in the rivers, so the bigger run-in tides are helping to hold back the fresh, allowing fishermen to fish some of their favourite snags. Plenty of good-quality red bream have been caught this way. Lure fishermen concentrating on the low tide must find spots with less runoff; that’s not easy

Prawns are still caught in reasonable numbers along the front beaches and rivers. Look for a shady spot.

Prawns will congregate under shady trees, out of the sun, this time of year. Crabs continue to be caught in reasonable numbers. Try down towards the mouths of the rivers. Crabs do not like too much fresh water and will generally move out towards the saltier water.

A crocodile has been reportedly hanging around the Clump Point boat ramp, so be very careful launching and retrieving your boat.

I have a plank down the middle of my boat trailer, so I don’t have to walk around the trailer to hook the wing rope on when I launch and retrieve my boat at night.

When walking along the beach, I like to stay 4 to 5 feet away from the water. I do the same when throwing lures off the rocks. Always remember to be crocodileaware in crocodile country.

Cassowary Coast Chargers Junior Rugby Union 2023 awards presentation MARIA GIRGENTI LAST month, Cassowary Coast Chargers Junior Rugby Union Club celebrated a successful 2023 season at their awards presentation held at the Goondi Bend Sports Reserve clubhouse.

Reds Cup at Ballymore Stadium, where Toquero and Calleja earned their place in the Queensland Reds Under 15 team and played in Sydney against the New South Waratahs, with Denan Anderson named in the Queensland Reds Tier 3 Academy squad.

Keilani, Lakeisha and Leesa played in the Under 17 Girls’ 7s State Titles at Ballymore Stadium.

At the Queensland Country championships in Rockhampton, Chargers players represented North Queensland, with Mitchell Bird (Under 13), Leo Mauloni, Denan Anderson, Michael Highland, and Jonty Coutts (Under 14), Harvey Kachel and Finn Dryden (Under 16), with Club President, Bart Dryden, Under 16 team assistant coach.

Club President Bart Dryden thanked the club’s executive committee and the sponsors.
