Marano’s Fuel to open new 24-hour service station in Tully in 2024 MARANO’S FUEL THE first sod has been turned on the construction of Marano’s Fuel’s new service station in Tully, the 15th site in the fully independent and locally-owned company’s expanding network of service stations across North Queensland.

The Tully site, located at the intersection of the Bruce Highway and Andersen Street, will be a 24-hour service station and is expected to open in mid-2024, creating around 20 jobs for the local community.

by representatives of Marano’s Fuel, Cassowary Coast Regional Council, KEIR Qld, National Australia Bank and SHAS Group, all of which were glad to see the project move from planning to construction.

The new service station features will include: • Sit down café-style dining • Complete commercial kitchen • Heavy vehicle access and trucker’s shower • High-flow diesel and Adblue at the bowser.

Marano’s Fuel Chief Executive Officer Angelo Marano said the new Tully service station had been a long-term strategic goal of the organisation.

“The addition of another service station to our existing portfolio of locations will ensure that we are able to continue to service our network of preexisting clients in the Tully area,” said Mr Marano.

“It will be fantastic to see the fuel market competitive in Tully, saving our residents money, providing great service, and creating job opportunities,” said Cr Barnes.

“It will be great to see the project come to life throughout the coming months.

Does UNESCO have more control over the Great Barrier Reef than they should?

media. It does raise questions on the intentions the Australian government has for Queensland’s primary industries. And as the area of coverage for the Wet Tropic Times is in the area adjacent to the Barrier reef, I believe that our community should have the privilege of reading the correspondence.

The follow quotes came from MP Nick Dametto’s post regarding the letters.

“In the letter the Minister speaks about meeting UNESCO's expectations and seeking confirmation that UNESCO's concerns are addressed by these actions.”

“The environment minister stood up in Parliament and spoke about how "proud" she was of this commitment after being grilled by the Hon. Bob Katter about the transparency of this letter and destructive plan.”

“What we all want to know now is, did our Premier know about this? What has the Queensland Government's involvement on this been?”

“We know that's what our Ag and Fisheries Minister has been doing, but now the focus needs to turn to the Premier.”

“For those in the affected industries they will see straight away what plans have already been implemented and what is coming in the very near future. More tree clearing regulation, tighter reef regs, more fishing bans, you name it.”

What Culture is Australia? CONT. SARI RUSSO | BA SOCIAL WORK MY column last week looked into the culture of Australians, in general, to determine whether we believed in a country with shared values. Are we walking side to side with brothers who will stand shoulder to shoulder with us in war, or will we fight on the side of the culture from where we came?

I admit that I often call myself a Fin (my family is from Finland) before I call myself an Australian.

But what does this mean for our nation if we do not identify with being an Australian first, even when we have only ever lived here in Australia?

The reality is that I am not a Fin. I have not lived in Finland; I have never been fully immersed in the culture and cannot speak Finnish properly. I have only lived in Australia.

We have first nations here and second nations.

What does it mean to be First Nation? What does it mean to be a Second Nation? Who are we?

The establishment of Israel occurred over a more extensive period than I mentioned in my column last week. Long-term local resident, Lorna Jones celebrated her 99th birthday STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIA GIRGENTI

ON September 29, thirty-five close friends gathered at Babinda Taverna for an intimate lunch to celebrate long-term local resident, Lorna Jones’ 99th birthday.

Lorna Jones (nee Merritt), the oldest of four was born in Mackay on September 29, 1924, to parents Edward James Merritt and Daisy Elizabeth Schabe.

Lorna did her primary and secondary schooling in Mackay and moved to Innisfail in 1938, at the age of 14.

For a couple of years, Lorna worked for a dressmaker in Innisfail, then as a receptionist and bar attendant at the Queens Hotel.

At the tender age of 17, Lorna visited her grandmother in Townsville for holidays, as Lorna insisted, she go and help the priests in Townsville.

It was during World War II when Lorna met Owen, whom she knew through the Catholic Youth Movement who was a soldier in the army about to receive his posting overseas.

As they exchanged letters for three years, romance blossomed when the pair met up again at Lorna's 21st birthday, and in Brisbane after Owen’s discharge from the army.

After the war ended, they were married in Lismore on December 13, 1945, had a honeymoon and returned to Innisfail in the same year.

Daughters of Australia (which became Catholic Women’s League), St Vincent de Paul Society, as well as pastoral care and family groups.

She was also a Eucharistic Minister and Reader when the church accepted lay people as ministers and continued to read at Villa Nova.

She also forged strong friendships and was a great support to the Augustinian priests, Marist Brothers and Good Samaritan sisters.

Over the years, Lorna and Owen had an active social life and were volunteers for the Innisfail Show Society and the Lady Lions Club, whilst Owen was involved with Innisfail Meals on Wheels and Innisfail Probus Club.

Lorna was the first pastoral carer at Villa Nova aged care home over 20 years ago.

After 17 of living independently at Warrina Lakes Retirement Village, in 2021 Lorna, then aged 97 made the decision to move to the aged care wing at Babinda Multi-Purpose Heath Service, to be closer to her good friend and carer, Julie Ghidella.

She loved gardening, enjoys reading, going out shopping and getting her hair done weekly.

Lorna who has 13 nieces and nephews, loves fresh food, plenty of meat and enjoys a glass of wine, plus a daily shot of Licor 43 Spanish liqueur.

The couple loved the land and had a cane farm near the North Johnstone bridge for 10 years, before running a cattle farm at Pin Gin Hill for over 30 years.

They moved to Warrina Lakes Retirement Village in 2004 and the pair were married for 71 years, before Owen sadly passed away in May 2017.

Constable Alexander Campbell was quick to action when the blaze caught, scaling the residence wall onto the balcony a level above.

Former Innisfail Festival Queens reunion and inaugural Miss Innisfail Riverfest Queen crowned MARIA GIRGENTI

AS part of Innisfail’s Riverfest celebrations, 148 people, which included Festival Queens, entrants and event organisers from 1954-2009 gathered at Brothers Leagues Club, Innisfail on October 6.

Lisa Coffin (Price), daughter of Imgard Schuster (first Miss Sugar Queen 1954), Hannah Harden (Price), granddaughter of Imgard Schuster and Diana Erceg, niece of Lilyana Erceg, who won second place in 1954 were in attendance.

John and Rosalie Amatt, son of Angela Dalton (Amatt), Miss Sugar in 1956, as well as Jenny Amatt (Coco), daughter of Angela Dalton (Amatt) and Joseph Coco also attended.

The First three Quests, 1954, 1955, and 1956 had three entrants and each girl represented one of the three district Mills: South Johnstone, Mourilyan and, Goondi. The winner crowned ‘Miss Sugar’ was the entrant who raised the most money.

Miss Irmgard Schuster, the first ‘Miss Sugar’ who represented Mourilyan Mill, sadly passed away in 2022.

Lilyana Erceg, who placed second, now aged 91, is a resident at Warrina aged care home and Ursula Tabone (Caristi) the third entrant could not attend due to illness.

The event adopted a new format in 1958 and renamed ‘Sugar Festival Queen’.

Over 54 years, there are 618 entrants listed. The 1958 quest, sponsored by See Poy & Sons had 18 entrants, who continued running the event until 1974.

For the first time, the 1979 festival, run by the Innisfail Scope Club allowed married woman to enter the quest.

Another format change took place in 1992, with Neil Wilmett crowned the first King, and the first Queen, King, Prince and Princess crowned in 1996.

The last Festival which took place at Billy Slater Oval in 2009 had 11 entrants.

Former Festival Queens, Margaret Scott, Leon Collins and Vera Battiato had the difficult job of judging with RikkiLee Broccardo crowned the 2023 Rotary Miss Innisfail Riverfest.

Over the next 12 months, Broccardo will attend special community events, support the committee and be a role model for young local women.

A special mention to Lorraine Boyd, Jessica Speziali and Renee McLeod for bringing this event to life.

This year’s entrants were Faith Williamson, Julia Thompson, Rikki-Lee Broccardo, Tahnee Ambrum and Tess Wilson.

from listening to guest speakers Katrina Paterson and Casie Scott talk about areas where Hinchinbrook is strong and the areas that will need support moving forward to attract more people to the region.

Hinchinbrook was noted as a community providing an environment that attracts an older demographic and people of retirement age.

The discussion focused on areas of improvement that could entice young families to move to Ingham and for the younger demographic to stay.

Based on this goal, it was identified that there is a need to improve community services, improve housing for younger people’s families and promote job opportunities in the region, focusing on the accommodation to support those job opportunities.

Highs and lows of bat breeding season in FNQ CAIRNS AND HINTERLAND HOSPITAL AND HEALTH SERVICE IT’S flying fox breeding season in Far North Queensland and public health authorities want everyone to know some simple tips.

Tropical Public Health Services director Dr Richard Gair said the good news was that flying foxes and other bats were important native animals and helped with pollination and controlling insect pests.

“The bad news is that many people don’t like them and complain about noise and smell around roosting and breeding sites. Councils can sometimes help if bats are creating a nuisance,’’ Dr Gair said.

So far this year, there have been 23 people either bitten or scratched by bats, who have required medical treatment.

Fear of bats was not justified if they were left alone, Dr Gair said.

“Not touching bats is essential because their complex immune systems tolerate viruses that can make other animals or people sick,’’ he said.

“The big disease is Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV) which is bat rabies. Anyone bitten or even scratched by a bat need a series of injections to prevent a potentially fatal illness.”

Dr Gair said that any species of bat may be carrying ABLV and the bat may look normal. “Bats are very cute up close, so people want to rescue them,’’ he said.

“During breeding season, you are more likely to find fallen pups or sick or injured bats, often stuck on a wire fence. They will bite straight through gloves or a towel, so don’t risk it.

“Call a trained and vaccinated wildlife carer to help.

“Our message is simple: don’t touch a bat. Any type of bat, adult, or pup, sick or well, dead or alive. Keep children away too. It’s just like snakes: protected native animals, but you wouldn’t pick them up!”

Anyone bitten or scratched by a bat should immediately wash the wound, apply antiseptic and seek urgent medical care.

Your local doctor or health facility can arrange for any vaccinations required.

HEAT oil in a wok (or large pan), add chicken and cook for 5-10 minutes. Set aside.

COOK onion, carrot, celery, and capsicum for 2 minutes.

RETURN chicken to the pan, add bok choy, and cook for 2 minutes.

MIX cornflour and soy sauce to make a paste, then add the vegetable stock (hot), honey and sesame seeds and pour over the chicken and vegetables.

COOK for a further 1-2 minutes until sauce thickens.

COMBINE the chicken and vegetables with noodles and serve.

Cardwell RSL Subbranch recently undertook the restoration of Gun from WW2 ROB LANG | PRESIDENT OF THE CARDWELL RSL SUB-BRANCH A WW2-era 40mm Bofors Gun was recently donated to the Cardwell RSL Subbranch by HMAS Cairns, and the Subranch has undertaken the restoration of the gun.

Once the restoration has been completed, the gun will be located in front of the RSL.

Some serious repair work must be undertaken before the re-assembly phase can begin, including sandblasting and repainting.

It’s important to the RSL that relics like this 40mm Bofors Gun be maintained in good condition as they are part of this country’s wartime history.

We thank Commander Alfonso Santos of HMAS Cairns for releasing sailors to assist us with this project.

Tim Smith, his son Cody and five sailors are assisting with the task of dismantling the Gun.

Psychologist’s Top Tips to Managing Your Mental Health After Cancer Diagnosis BREAST CANCER NETWORK AUSTRALIA

OCTOBER is both Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Mental Health Month. Australia’s leading consumer breast cancer organisation Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) and Australia’s go-to specialist in cancerrelated distress, popular podcaster, and Clinical Psychologist Dr Charlotte Tottman, have collaborated on 5 top tips for managing your mental health alongside a breast cancer diagnosis, assisting those affected by breast cancer to live well, their way.

Dr Tottman’s podcast Upfront About Breast Cancer – What You Don’t Know Until You Do has been downloaded over 100,000 times and offers a valuable resource for those with breast cancer, especially amidst the current wait times for mental health and healthcare services. It has had a profound impact on its listeners. “I have to thank you for perhaps saving me and my marriage,” said listener Nikki. “Not only has it been the most validating and informative tool for me, I have asked my husband and daughter to listen so that they can better understand my struggle and theirs. This has really changed everything.”

1. Give yourself time to adjust “After a cancer diagnosis, it’s normal to struggle through a period of adjustment as you come to terms with change,” said and Clinical Psychologist Dr Charlotte Tottman. “How you navigate these changes can depend on who you are as a person, your previous experience of adversity, and your resilience.”

Anxiety is worrying about the future and fearing things that haven’t happened.

It is a normal response to a diagnosis and comes in many forms. “There are at least 12 different types of anxiety when it comes to a cancer diagnosis,” says Tottman. “An appropriate level of anxiety can be a good thing because it helps you to develop strategies to deal with the physical, practical, or emotional challenges you’re facing.”

2. Understand your anxiety to manage it According to Tottman, learning to sit in the discomfort that comes with anxiety is a powerful skill to develop, along with an understanding that it is temporary and will pass. “Anxiety will peak and then start to dissipate, so once you recognise this and learn how to sit with it, you are back in the driver’s seat,” she said.

“The anxiety may still happen, which is normal, but it will no longer destabilise you.”

Understanding what triggers your anxiety and anticipating what symptoms you might encounter can also help you manage it, because you know what to expect. “You might experience physiological symptoms, such as a racing heart, a sick feeling in your stomach, light-headedness, or tightness in your chest,” said Tottman.

3. Seek professional support Cancer treatment itself can affect your normal functioning, so ask yourself whether you are struggling because of your mental health or physical health.

no one else understands what you’re going through. “Generally, I recommend seeking help if your anxiety or struggle to adjust is getting in the way of your functioning, impacting your sleep or relationships, or causing you a high level of distress,” she said. “Your GP – or therapist if you see one – can help assess where you are in terms of your struggle.”

An ongoing relationship with a therapist, a psycho-oncologist, or clinical psychologist can offer a safe environment. “Speaking in an unfiltered way can help you feel heard, seen and validated,” said Tottman. “Talking to others who have a similar experience can also be valuable in helping you feel understood.”

4. Check in on ALL those affected While someone may look outwardly well, they may still be struggling emotionally, so regularly checking in is important. “People tend to flock in the early stages of a diagnosis and then vanish down the track,” said Tottman.

“That’s when the person who’s been diagnosed may feel the most isolated, so check in and ask how things are really going for them.”

It’s also important for carers to look after themselves. Tottman said carers often feel invisible or put their own needs last. “Remember, if you are exhausted or unable to continue caring, it affects you and the person you’re caring for,” she said.

5. Stay active and engaged Moving helps your physical and mental health. “The silver bullet in all of this is exercise, so I recommend you stay mobile and active,” Tottman said.

Mill replaces classroom for school-based apprentice WILMAR YEAR 11 student Brooke Smith has two different school uniforms in her wardrobe – one for Ayr State High School and, the other, a set of hi-vis clothing and steel-cap boots for Wilmar Sugar and Renewables.

As part of an initiative to build a diverse and talented workforce, Brooke has become the company’s first schoolbased apprentice.

Since the start of the second semester, Brooke’s classroom every Thursday is the Pioneer Mill Centralised Workshop in the Burdekin region.

Training Superintendent Daniel Shipard said the inaugural school-based apprenticeship was another example of Wilmar’s commitment to youth training and development.

“We had a boilermaking apprenticeship still available from our 2023 recruitment drive and thought it would be good to use the position to trial a school-based apprenticeship,” he said.

“We approached Ayr State High School directly and targeted Year 11 students.”

recruitment process to that undertaken by our full- time apprentices.”

Mr Shipard said Brooke’s part-time apprenticeship saw her attend Pioneer Mill one day a week and normal school for the rest of the week during school terms.

“When Brooke completes Year 12 next year, the intention is that she will roll straight into a full-time apprenticeship,” he said.

Mr Shipard said Brooke’s apprenticeship would be monitored closely, with a view to extending the program to Wilmar’s other milling regions in the future.

Wilmar Sugar and Renewables is one of Queensland’s largest apprenticeship providers. Its apprenticeship program is also one of the most successful in Australia, with an average completion rate of 98 per cent.

A family-owned prawn fishing company has become the first statemanaged fishery in Queensland to earn a coveted sustainability accreditation from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES (QUEENSLAND) THE Australian Ocean King Prawn Company (AOKPC), which owns and operates 10 vessels out of Hervey Bay in Queensland’s southern offshore trawl region, primarily targets eastern king prawns for sale in domestic and international markets.

The certification caps a big six months for Queensland’s wild-caught prawn sector, after a $50,000 State Government grant supported the industry’s Taste the Wild Prawns campaign.

The grant was part of Queensland’s $250,000 Commercial and Charter Fishing Grant Program.

ONE of the proudest moments in Tully Boxsing history will go down as one of the most unusual, unreal and unbelievable family affairs when Everas, the town of Sarina, will soon host one of the biggest Boxing Tournament in Qld.

Thursday, October 19, 2023 It will have our own Tully boxers as the entree and main course when the father and son duo of Dan and Dalun Fawkes will open and close the show.

It's something only fairytales could conjure up, and it will grab the whole State Boxing body to take notice of the talent that the North has to offer.

Talking to both during the week, it was surreal to think how this came about. "I received the call from the Sarina Boxing Club, and he said we want you to Main Event the evening," beamed Dan, "Then, when we worked a few things out, it was decided that my son Dalun would open the night with a match as well."

I have seen Dalun almost every day at school, and the young man cannot hide his excitement much longer; such is his pride coming through that awesome and sometimes cheeky smile.

It's a testament to the hard work big Dan and his many hard workers behind the scenes have done, even this week seeing my good mate and favourite dude J Gumbleton down at training running the next batch of superstars through their paces.

It's no fluke that this has happened, and I am, for one, as proud as anyone of both Dalun and Dan. It will be a special night for them and our Boxing Club, with Dalun Fawkes opening the night and big Dan Fawkes closing the show in the Main Event Fight of the evening.

They are the best father-son sporting duo ever.

If you get a chance and see them around town, give them all the well wishes you can because they deserve every accolade that is coming their way. Go Dalun, go Dan. On other weekend sports, I had the honour of travelling down to watch our Jumbun Rugby League team compete in the Townsville All-Black's Carnival.

Although it was a hard slog, with 40-degree heat, hot oven air and zero shade, our boys fought hard to the end—well done, team.

Golf News Innisfail Golf Club THE weather has finally improved and last week, the grounds crew accomplished lots, with most of the mowing, tree trimming and clearing the tree limbs from the course.

If you have any time spare during the week or on Thursdays, we really need help with the whipper snipping and tree trimming. Anyone who can help, please contact Andrew Rose or Jake Cockle.

The golf simulator is now up and running in the clubhouse, and as soon as the projector arrives this sees the project completed. In the meantime, members can use the simulator, so please see Jake who will set it up and provide tips to help players improve their golf game.

Herbert River Part One TO continue the series of Qld and Australian rep players connected to Wet Tropics Times towns, we now look at Ingham, or more specifically, the Herbert River district, where there is a long and proud rugby league history with a lot of Qld and Australian rep playing in the local competition.

In fact, the list is so extensive we need to split it up into two eras: 1920s to 1965; 1966- modern.

The first Qld rep player in the Herbert River was the 1924 Qld and Australian fullback Eric Fraunfelder.

Eric made the Qld and Australian side from Ipswich, and over the next few years, he played in many places, including Mackay, the Burdekin, and Herbert River.

Fast forward to the 1950-60s era, and the number of well-known rep players playing in the local competition really escalated.

In 1950, former NSW front-rower Jack Munn moved to Ingham from Sydney and made the NQ and Qld sides in 1950. Jack returned to Sydney in 1951, but another player, Trevor Whitehead, came to the district and did the same thing, making the 1951 Qld side while playing in the Herbert River competition.

In 1955, former Qld centre from Toowoomba Ron Teys was appointed captain-coach of the Herbert River Foley shield side, and in 1957, a NSW country forward, George Smith, moved to Ingham and played in the local competition. George later played in Lithgow, where he made the 1962 NSW and Australian sides.

In 1959, John Eaton joined the Herbert River competition after representing Qld from Toowoomba in 1957.

The 1959 Qld side defeated NSW 3-1 in the interstate series, and over the next few years, four of that Qld squad moved to the Herbert River to play!

Centre Brian “Tiger” Walsh, lock Don Meehan, second row Jimmy Paterson and fullback Mick Shannon all had time in the Herbert River competition during the 1960s.

Centre Brian “Tiger “Walsh was from Ipswich and moved to Ingham after representing Qld in 1959, while Jimmy Paterson continued his illustrious Qld career while playing in the Herbert River in 1963.

Don Meehan was actually Qld captain for one game of the 1959 interstate series and went on to have a long association with Herbert River. He first moved there in 1960 from Mackay, went away for a year, then returned to lead Herbert River to Foley Shield victory in 1965.

Mick Shannon played for Qld 1958-59 from Brisbane brothers and also spent some time playing in the Herbert River competition during his playing career.

With all these players with interstate experience playing in the local competition, it was time for a local junior to emerge, and Ray Miguel did just that.

After making the 1962 NQ side, Ray was selected for Qld on the wing, making him the first local junior to go all the way from local club footy to Qld selection. He was still playing for Qld by 1965!

So by 1965, almost a dozen players with Qld experience had played in the local Herbert River competition, with three of them, Eric Fraunfelder, Jimmy Paterson and George Smith playing for Australia during their careers.

Tully Cricket's junior season kicked off with a blast MARIA GIRGENTI LAST Saturday, sixteen aspiring cricketers aged 4 - 8 participated in the Blasters program at Kim Carroll Fields, Tully, with coach Owen Zammitt.

The youngsters warmed up with catching, split into four groups and rotated through cricket skills, such as

throwing/bowling, batting, fielding, and running between wickets.

A huge thank you to Zammitt for this well-organised first session and the parents who assisted.

The first Tier 1 match occurred between the Cassowaries (Blue) taking on the Crocodiles (Red).

Crocodiles won the toss and elected to bat first. Both teams provided entertaining cricket, ending in a thrilling one-run win off the last ball by Cassowaries.

A stand-out for the Crocodiles was Blake Riley, who top scored with 39(20) and 2/22, along with William Robertson with 20 (20) and 1/3.

For the Cassowaries, Seb Di Mauro notched up an impressive 54 (15).

William Burns had an impressive fivewicket haul of 5/17, whilst Jaxon Lizzio finished with figures of 12 (18) and 2/7.

Mauro 23 (31), as well as a top effort from Zor Singh in his first game with 2/17 and 15* (41).

For Kookaburras, Sam Frumento stood out with 34* (39) and 2/11, whilst William Burns, Sahib Singh and Sam Frumento each bowled a maiden over.

A special thank you to umpires Jake Robertson and Andrew McLaughlin.

After showing his skills in the Blasters program, Emmett Frumento joined the Cassowaries for the last hour of play, where he claimed 1/2 off his very first over.

A huge thank you to Mark Stuart, Mauri Nadalin and Jake Robertson for umpiring, all the youngsters who participated and parents for bringing them along.

The cricket action continued with the first Tier 2 game between Kookaburras (Green) and Taipans (Orange).

Fitzroy house claimed Innisfail State College cross country glory IN Term 1, Innisfail State College held its annual cross country, and school spirits were high as students braved hot and humid conditions as they ran the 3km track.

Tully Tigers' Senior Rugby League Awards presentation STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIA GIRGENTI

OVER 100 people gathered for the Tully Tigers senior awards presentation night held on September 21 at Tigers Leagues Club to celebrate club and player achievements throughout the 2022 season.

This year marked 60 years since Tully won the prestigious Hanush & Foley Shields, and Angelo Crema, Tully's own Australian Kangaroos representative and 1963 Foley Shield team member, spoke about his career and the Foley Shield win.

Special guest Terry Campese shared his rugby

league journey, which started in the Queanbeyan Blues' junior ranks, NRL career with Canberra Raiders (139 games), Hull Kingston Rovers (26 games), Australian, New South Wales and World Cup appearances for Italy, as well as his recent appointment as head coach of the Townsville Blackhawks State Cup side in season 2024.

Two Tully teams featured in the FNQRL finals series, with Reserve-Grade, knocked out in the first week by the Cairns Brothers.

The Under 18 team, who finished in the top four, defeated Innisfail and progressed to the second week of finals before

their elimination by Atherton.

Earlier this month, Tully Tigers' were well represented as finalists at the FNQ Rugby League Gold Medal awards with Baptiste Fabre, a contender for the coveted Gold Medal.

Cohen Emmi was a finalist for the Rookie of the Year Award - Tom Tassell Memorial and Jordon Ketchell was a finalist and won the ReserveGrade Best and Fairest (Lionel Williamson Medal).

Tazmin Muriata was one of the finalists nominated for Female Rookie of the Year (Deb Gallop Award).

Louis Carlaw, who has played for the Tigers since 2006, received acknowledgement for 10 years of service whilst the club farewelled retiring club stalwarts Jordon Ketchell and

Fabien Tauli.

FISHING

NEWS with Tony Mossop LAST week, the reef fishermen were dealt a double blow with the weather finally coming good, only to coincide with the reef fin fish closure and the Spanish mackerel closure.

Most recreational Fisherman are only too happy to let the fish spawn for the long-term benefit to our fishery. However, just getting out to have a fish on the reef has been exceedingly difficult this year with continual rough conditions.

Fishing around the islands last week, upon the broken reef, resulted in good numbers of grassy, sweet lips and some solid grunter. Squids were also around in good numbers.

Generally, if you can find squid, predator fish will be nearby. Freshly caught squid is by far the best bait you can use around the islands. There have been reports of a few grey and spotty mackerel still being caught, although it is getting a little late in the season for these guys.

Let's hope the Spanish mackerel continue to be active after the spawning closure, allowing fishermen to get another go at them.

With the reef being closed, the rivers were heavily fished last week, with good results—red bream were caught in good numbers on both lures and baits.

Fishing is starting to liven up in the freshwater with water levels stabilizing and the temperature slowly increasing.

Plenty of good-sized barras are being caught, and Jacks are aggressively hitting well-placed lures.

Fishermen are reporting some of the best jack fishing they have experienced for a long time.

Not to be outdone, good numbers of jungle perch have also been caught.

The fish should actively chase lures and aggressively take bait as the water continues to warm.

Good-sized flatheads and solid bream are still being caught around the river mouths; walking the sand bars

Remember, Spanish mackerel are still a no-take species.

The lure fishermen will be looking at that early morning low around the rivers this weekend.

Fishing a few hours before and after the low should be your best bet. Bait fishermen chasing jacks and barras will most likely use the same morning low to the advantage, getting their baits right in close to the exposed snags.

At the same time, the afternoon high is an excellent opportunity to soak bait out around the river mouths.

For the best results, try fishing the first couple of hours of the run-out tide.

This week's weather forecast for the weekend looks fantastic for the reef fishermen and with the October reef fin fish closure behind us, I am sure many boats will be heading out to our main reef systems. With the expected calm conditions on the weekend, many mums and Dads will be fishing with the kids around the islands.

Coconuts' Outrigger Canoe Club members paddled their way to gold MARIA GIRGENTI IDEAL weather and prime wind conditions set the stage for a display of paddling skills at the AO Ozone R2 Mini G Downwinder 18km race in July, which saw 185 competitors in action on the water.

Hosted by the Hekili Outrigger Canoe Club, Cairns, in collaboration with AOCRA Australia and Ozone, this event proved to be a testament to endurance and skills as competitors readied themselves for the upcoming 45km race the following week.

The Open Men's Unlimited OC6 crew of Adrian Darveniza, Greg Lyell, Raka Meisi, Kilauea George, Peter Vai, and Harry Rei, claimed line honours in the OC6 division, whilst the Open Mixed OC6 crew of Andrew Portelli, Miles Darveniza, Adam Sadler, Vicki Mackereth, Brodie Alder, and Tracy Darveniza also claimed gold.

In his first race as steerer, Andrew Portelli took on the challenge and did an admirable job in challenging conditions.

Despite this, they finished first in their category in an impressive 3 hrs:44 mins, setting the stage for an exciting race in Samoa.

The Coconuts' club recently welcomed new members from Papua New Guinea, Raka Meisi, Kilauea George, Peter Vai, Harry Rei, Alex Henao and Frank Henao.

Club President Adrian Darveniza said the race takes place along one of the most stunning coastlines of Australia.

"The race has proven to be a mustdo on the outrigger calendar and whilst it is very demanding, the sense

of achievement at the end makes it all worthwhile."

"The event provides a great opportunity for our club to race against interstate and international competitors, right on our doorstep."

Their determined performance in the Unlimited Open Men's division underscored their commitment to representing their country at the Pacific Games.

They finished strong in 3 hrs:53 mins and returned home with gold in their division.

Adrian and Tracy Darveniza tackled the race in an OC2 (two-person canoe) and claimed gold in the Master Mixed OC2 division for their efforts.

In the V1 category, Abbott's skills rewarded him with a well-deserved gold medal.

This year's Great Barrier Reef Ocean Challenge (GBROC) 45km downwind race in Cairns attracted over 180 competitors from around Australia.

The trademark southeasterly winds experienced a week before the event were non-existent, so paddlers had to rely on their endurance and stamina to finish strong.
