ANYBODY who visited the Tyto Regional Art Gallery to view the Hinchinbrook Birdlife Art Awards Exhibition would have observed in the front of the gallery niche area a small display of artworks by the Warrgamay Yibiyibi Djingarrabali Art Group.

Following this, the group was invited to hold its inaugural exhibition at the gallery— The Warrgamay Yibiyibi Djingarrabali—Warrgamay Children Dreaming Exhibition— which opened on Friday, November 3.

Christine George extended a warm welcome to country in the Warrgamay language on behalf of the three Traditional Owner groups of the Ingham district, Warrgamay, Bandjin and Nywaigi.

Christine went on to explain the origin of the Warrgamay Yibiyibi Djingarrabali Art Group and to open the exhibition. The group began eight years ago when Josie Barrett and Soraya Whelan asked Christine's mother, Margaret George if they could hold weekly art classes at her home. Josie, Soraya and Margaret came up with the group's name with language advice from Troy Wyles-Whelan. What is essentially a family art group is complemented by guest artists who regularly join the group. The group is supported by the Girringun Aboriginal Corporation Art Centre, which provides materials and assistance to stage exhibitions.

Today, around five artists meet regularly to create not only traditional weavings and paintings but works incorporating a variety of

mediums and materials. This has seen these artists learning to reinterpret traditional art practices to execute them in new ways without compromising traditional values.

The materials and forms they are experimenting with include synthetic fabric and recycled materials, crochet, jewellery making, clay painting, ceramics, and more. Traditional materials are also used, such as wood and Lomandra (mat rushes).

A particularly moving inclusion on the exhibition night was the powerful rendition of the Australian National Anthem and We Are Australian in the Warrgamay language by young vocalist and proud BiyaygirriBandjin woman Janae Pearce.

She was not the only young person whose talents were on show on the night. Young violinist David Schofield has

become a regular and welcome performer at the Tyto Regional Art Gallery exhibitions, providing a pleasant ambience as people gather and socialize.

It is anticipated that exhibitions by the group will be held annually in the future.

The Warrgamay Yibiyibi Djingarrabali—Warrgamay Children's Dreaming Exhibition is on display daily from 10 am-4 pm until Friday, December 1, 2023.

This exhibition features the work of Margaret, Christine, Trisha, Keisha, Shirley and Wayne George, Josie Barrett, Lewellyn James and Kalli Stewart. Their works illustrate their engagement with traditional and non-traditional methods and materials.

AS part of the Tully Carols by Candlelight event, the organizers (the combined churches of Tully) incorporate a gift giving tree. At this time of the year, we would like to encourage people to bless a child who is in challenging circumstances in our community.

National Rural Health Month highlights healthcare inequities NATIONAL RURAL HEALTH ALLIANCE TODAY marks the beginning of National Rural Health Month - a month that highlights the inequities that rural, regional and remote Australians face when trying to access the same health care as their urban counterparts.

“This November, we take the opportunity to highlight the myriad of issues faced by rural and remote communities in Australia when trying to access health care, aiming to draw the attention of health sector stakeholders to work towards tangible and sustainable solutions,” said Susi Tegen, Chief Executive of the Alliance.

“We’re keen to voice the healthcare concerns of the 7 million people living in rural and remote Australia throughout this month and highlight the contributions of rural health and medical practitioners. We welcome your stories using #RuralHealthMatters to highlight in our communications channels,” said Ms Tegen.

“Rural areas have fewer health providers across most registered professions although the burden of disease and deaths increase with remoteness. Rural and remote Australians are not second-class citizens and should be able to access equitable health services to their urban counterparts,” Ms Tegen said.

“The Alliance knows from the Evidence base for additional investment in rural health in Australia, released earlier this year, that each person in rural and remote Australia is missing out on nearly $850 per year of healthcare access. This equates to a total annual rural health underspend of $6.5billion.

This is money that could have allowed Australians living rurally to access health and medical services where they live,” Ms Tegen added.

Rural people experience a triple health disadvantage: poorer circumstances in terms of social determinants of health, a lack of service availability, and higher costs of access and delivery, all resulting in poor health outcomes despite their

Whilst the former premise of Fiori with Love on Cartwright Street (Cartwright street is known for the great flood of 1977) has now changed ownership for the first time since 1985, Louise reflected on the long history of the building.

National Rural Health Month coincides with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Alliance.

The National Rural Health Alliance (the Alliance) comprises 49 national organisations committed to improving the health and wellbeing of the 7 million people in rural and remote Australia.

Our diverse membership includes representation from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health sector, health professional organisations, health service providers, health educators and students.

Moscellas, a convenience store; it was known as The Night Owl, later evolving into a Florist Café & homewares store.

The café exudes a calming presence and is a place for locals to gather for casual meetings, a place to read or work, or to host events such as baby showers. Louise is still settling into her new home on Lannercost Street. Still, she is aware that the new location brings new opportunities for her café. Mostly, she hopes that Fiori with Love will foster community spirit and connection.

Fiori with Love was started as a small-scale operation eight years ago that quickly proved popular with locals, "I decided that was something that I wanted to do, and it just started as a florist. Then we thought, 'Why don't we put in a couple of tables?', you know, with the coffee machine. And so, we did that, and it went one table to eight tables, and then we added homewares and things like that, and it evolved into a really good business," said Louise.

The café allows several local artists to display their products for sale, providing the opportunity for café patrons to purchase unique items whilst supporting local small businesses.

Women's Network September event

MARIA GIRGENTI IN September, Cassowary Coast Business Women's Network hosted another amazing evening at Brothers Leagues Club Innisfail.

Long-term members, new members, guests and friends gathered to hear about the business and origin stories of five of CCBWN's newest members.

Speakers on the night were Kathryn Jackson from Creative Workshops and Nutrimetics, Alissa Klein from Alissa Klein Emmett Therapist, Rosy Maccarone from Cairns Property Office, Trish Elsden from

September's event sponsor was Gitta from Gitta's Bookkeeping and BAS services, whilst Kathryn Jackson from Creative Workshops won the business card draw and was last month's event sponsor.

Those in attendance enjoyed scrumptious food and excellent service while listening to members' entertaining and inspirational stories.

Since then, it has continued to grow and develop into the dynamic and diverse group of business women who make up the group today.

Members run businesses throughout the Cassowary Coast region, including Innisfail, Tully, Mission Beach, El Arish, Kurrimine Beach, Silkwood and Cardwell, in a broad range of industries, thus creating a committed and professional network of businesses.

The Cassowary Coast Business Women's Network Inc (CCBWN) was formed in 2010.

The CCBWN aims to facilitate networking with like-minded women, encourage, nurture and support the ideals/goals of women, provide a voice for business women, promote professional and personal growth, foster the development of new business initiatives, and enrich women's lives through friendship.

Mourilyan State School and Innisfail State College achieved momentous success at the Wonder of Science conference MARIA GIRGENTI

LAST month, selected Year 6 teams competed at the regional Wonder of Science regional conference held at James Cook University, Cairns.

Mourilyan State School (MSS), who fielded three teams, battled it out against nine Year 6 teams and received a third place, whilst another team took out the Year 6 Cairns Division Regional trophy.

Innisfail State College’s Year 7 team of Keean, Giacomo and Xavier won the Year 7 division, with their

science enquiry determining the best launch angle of a bottle rocket for horizontal distance.

This annual event, which attracted 166 Year 4 - 9 students from across the region, aims to encourage students to become involved in science.

MSS’s three teams displayed their investigations into the decomposition of banana peels.

Students selected this topic as 50% of the organic waste placed in compost bins at the school are banana peels, so students could relate as it was a real scenario and bananas are a major industry in the Cassowary Coast region.

Students had to present their investigations twice to a panel of scientists as well as to their peers.

The award-winning team from MSS investigated and presented whether the addition of onions to compost would help to accelerate decomposition rates.

The group that placed third presented their topic of whether changing moisture levels in compost would speed up the decomposition of banana peels.

All three of the groups’ experiments supported their hypotheses with an observation of an increased rate of decomposition.

This year, WOS was free to schools in Innisfail and

surrounding areas, courtesy of funding by Rio Tinto.

This included two visits to MSS by UQ and QUT Young Science ambassadors Young Soi and Amir, who worked with Year 6 students as they undertake the WoS Socks for Science Challenge Task.

These scientists assisted students with their scenarios, held team meetings and provided students with valuable verbal and written feedback on their presentations in preparation for WOS. Wonder of Science fosters a STEM culture that empowers and increases capability for positive student and societal outcomes via access to high-quality, evidence-based STEM education.

This culture is one where all students, teachers, parents and community members understand and value the importance and potential of Science and STEM careers and pathways.

These two winning teams will now travel to Brisbane and compete against all regional WOS Year 6 finalists on November 24.

Whilst in Brisbane, they will stay at the University of Queensland campus, St Lucia and take part in other science-related activities.

DID you know prayer can be used to impose our own will? This is a subtle form of witchcraft - it is the use of spiritual power to control and manipulate people, circumstances & situations.

Do you consider yourself a person who cares about the community and goes above and beyond to support their community? If so, then you would be known as a person who looks after people in need and works tirelessly for humanitarian projects.

A person who has experienced the tireless efforts of humanitarian people will often join them in their cause. Then, it becomes a fellowship of like-minded individuals. The person who was broken and then raised up to find community is not going to forget the love and care that was shared with them. They will want to share it.

It tends to be people who feel used, so stop wanting to share their gifts and serve their community.

Mission Beach Historical Society new committee THE Mission Beach Historical Society (MBHS) has recently been registered as a charity and celebrated its 3nd anniversary mid-October.

Congratulations and grateful thanks to the incoming MBHS committee, elected on November 2, 2023, at the AGM. Returning members: Valerie Boll (President), Deidre Holmes (Vice-president), Ken Gray (Secretary), Penelope Goward (Treasurer), Leonard Andy (Djiru cultural advisor), Meryl Harding (social media and audio visual master) and Committee members: Margaret Remilton, Diane Bull, Liz Lang and Brenda Harvey.

New Committee members: Lina Bauer and Rotha Jago.

Heartfelt thanks to all for their time, commitment, contributions and dedication.

The MBHS inaugural exhibition ‘Echo of the Past – Historical photographs from Mission Beach, 1890s – 1950s’ has been touring in the Cassowary Coast since April. The photographic part of the show (framed photos and slide show) is back on display at the Mission Beach library until December 22, 2023 and provides an insight in the diverse early history of Mission Beach.

When we find people with a shared heart for our community, it can feel like finding our home and finding our home is essential. It’s our place of welcome.

When I think of the character of people I want to be known to be like, I think of people who serve in associations like Rotary, Lions, PCYC, Vinnies, Lifeline, Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels as a few examples.

Living a life of service is something that I have always admired, and I get excited about people I can fellowship with who live the same way that I can walk beside and do life with.

Echo of the Past exhibition at the Mission Beach library

Red Salad Serves: 6 Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes 2 ½ serve per portion Ingredients 2 large potatoes, cut into 2cm chunks 1 medium sweet potato, cut into 2cm chunks 2 carrots, diced 1 cup frozen peas 1 egg, hardboiled 1 cup plain yoghurt, reduced fat ½ cup of fresh dill, sprigs only, roughly chopped Freshly cracked pepper 225g can beetroot, sliced 3 shallots, finely sliced Method COMBINE potatoes and carrots in a large saucepan. Fill the saucepan with enough cold water to cover the contents with water.

BRING to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium-low and cook until potatoes are easily pierced, about 5 to 6 minutes.

ADD frozen peas in the last minute of cooking.

DRAIN potato, carrots and peas and cool to room temperature.

COOL and slice the hardboiled egg COMBINE the yoghurt, dill and pepper in a small bowl.

ADD the cooked veggies, shallots, beetroot and hardboiled egg into a large bowl.

STIR through the yoghurt dressing.

This is not a free dump day.

Hinchinbrook Visitor Information Centre Volunteer Famil The Hinchinbrook Visitor Information Centre staff and volunteers recently enjoyed an enriching outing at Paronella Park, a highlight of their year.

They began with a captivating 30 minute guided tour of the park, learning about its history and the vision of Jose Paronella.

Afterward, they explored the lush park, appreciating its natural beauty and charm, followed by a scrumptious lunch at Mena Creek Hotel.

The adventure continued with a tour of the newly constructed Van Park, adding a modern touch to the rich heritage. The day left them brimming with new knowledge and fond memories, strengthening their commitment to providing valuable information to visitors and appreciating the beauty and history of their region.

Preventative dentistry helps prevent the beginning or progression of oral disease.

Brushing and flossing or interdental brushes (picksters) are important for your oral health and should be done together. Brushing your teeth twice a day is good, but it only removes plaque from the front and back surfaces of your teeth. Flossing helps you remove plaque from between your teeth and underneath your gums.

Plaque that isn’t cleaned away by brushing and flossing can, over time, harden into a substance called tartar or calculus. Tartar builds up along your gumline and can lead to gum disease.

Once tartar has formed it can only be removed by a professional cleaning at the dentist’s office.

CRIME WRAP Fire destroyed boat on Johnstone River ON Saturday, November 4 at midday gathered in large numbers on the Innisfail Corso and observed a fire engulfing a large catamaran moored on the far side of the Johnstone River.

Acrid black smoke covered the river surrounds and town area, until the boat burnt to the water line.

The tender boat broke away from the main vessel and burnt out against the foreshore.

Police are seeking public assistance to locate a 66-year-old man, after his vessel was destroyed by fire.

The vessel has been declared a crime scene and police divers returned to the vessel on November 5 to conduct searches of the surrounding area.

Update November 6: Far North Officers investigating the marine incident have located a body.

No definite determinations have been made at this stage around the identity of the deceased, and forensic examinations are ongoing.

Police are continuing with the investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

This is a particularly important election for cane growers and the communities we support, with our industry on the cusp of an important evolution.

We can expect these campaigns to ramp up markedly over the coming months as the pollies vie to secure your vote.

However, it’s not just the political parties who will have plenty to say heading into the next election.

Special interest groups, activists, unions, and peak industry bodies will all be out there campaigning for their own cause or sector.

At CANEGROWERS, we will be working hard over the next 12 months to secure the best possible outcomes for our members, our industry, agriculture, and the regional communities we live in and support.

Directly and indirectly, the sugarcane industry contributes more than $4 billion to the Queensland economy annually and employs around 20,000 people.

We have a lot at stake.

With State Governments now locked in for four-year terms, it’s vitally important we elect the government that will support the growth of our industry.

If we get it wrong, 2028 is a long way away. A lot of

We, more than any other industry, are perfectly positioned to drive the evolution of sustainable energy, sustainable aviation fuel, biofuels, bioplastics, and a whole host of other bioproducts that will greatly assist the nation in reaching emission reduction targets.

Targets that have been set by government policy.

This evolution could generate thousands of regional jobs and bring wealth and prosperity to our regional towns and cities. But it will only be possible if the State Government attracts the right investment and gets behind the right initiatives.

More than that, they must pursue policies that not only make it possible for growers to keep farming but also encourage growth and expansion in the industry.

At its most basic level, this means addressing the punishing water and electricity prices facing growers.

Some growers are being hit with power bills topping $50,000 a quarter simply to produce the food and fibre that Australians need.

The government must introduce policies that lower power prices across the board for business and residential customers but also establish electricity tariffs that significantly decrease the cost burden on farmers.

Similarly, the cost of irrigation water must be addressed if we are to see agriculture thrive, especially as we head into a dry El Nino weather cycle.

After the last election, the current state government introduced inequitable cuts to water prices, with some ag sectors benefiting more than others. While wellintentioned, this policy could have been better designed and must change so that all growers are given a fair go and are not punished for the region they farm in or the crop they grow.

Suppose we can reduce the cost burdens on farmers, create an environment where sustainable growth is possible, and attract and support investment.

In that case, Queensland’s sugarcane industry can continue to be an economic powerhouse that drives a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous Queensland into the next century.

LOWER HERBERT WATER QUALITY PROGRAM POSITIVE relationships, regional coordination and local on-ground support have driven management practice changes for improved water quality in the Lower Herbert.

The Lower Herbert Water Quality Program (LHWQP) draws on established and trusted delivery providers in the Herbert district to support sugarcane farmers to better manage their farm nutrient inputs to best suit their crop needs and reduce nitrogen losses as runoff.

The Herbert is one of the highest priority river catchments for reducing dissolved inorganic nitrogen losses in the Reef 2050 plan. Responding to this challenge, the LHWQP and its Delivery Providers are working with sugarcane farmers to increase understanding of farm management practices that improve the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of their farms.

The $16.2 million program is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government's Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, with coordination support provided by CANEGROWERS Herbert River.

Since the program commenced in 2020, over three hundred growers in the Lower Herbert district have adjusted their farming practices, increased their knowledge of modern technologies and equipment, and gained assistance from industry experts and leaders to improve their nutrient management plans and budgets through greater innovation, integration, and collaboration across the range of Herbert projects.

The Program is on track to prevent 140 tonnes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen from entering the Great Barrier Reef lagoon from the Herbert River catchment each year. While important, it is not just about meeting program targets though; it is being passionate about the sugar industry and the fact that all delivery providers and growers are working together for a stronger future.

LiquaForce developed a Local Area Nutrient Datahub (LANDHub) to deliver a shift in the level of actionable insight and accessibility of key agronomic information for growers of all levels of digital maturity.

The project produces optimal Six Easy Steps nutrient management plans tailored to the region and specific farms, paddock, and soil lab data inputs. It also provides secure, private, digital storage for all farm, soil and production data.

Extension agronomist from Herbert AgriServices and LANDHub Leanne Carr said that growers go the extra mile to make a difference, and having an extension officer helping them every step of the way ensures they meet and exceed program targets.

"The role of an extension officer is to build relationships with farmers, to share science, knowledge and ideas and work through the challenges, aiming to drive on-farm profitability and sustainability through enhanced understanding and improved decisionmaking," said Ms Carr.

Cameron Liddle, owner of LiquaForce and LANDHub, also emphasised that a greater level of onground extension is required due to rapidly changing technological and increased legislative environment in agriculture.

Fourth-generation Herbert grower Robert Lyon said the industry working together to identify what's coming off-farm and potentiality going to the reef shows that we are concerned and proactive in managing change.

"We have to prevent chemicals moving into waterways so we as an industry can show the rest of the world that we are not destroying everything.

"Growers are experts in their own right due to being generational growers, and sharing this knowledge with others is an important factor in creating change, added Mr Lyon.

Program Coordinator for the Lower Herbert Water Quality Program Carola Bradshaw said having a regional coordinator working on-ground also helps to deliver community and stakeholder engagement at a program level.

AgroGroup Directors Kristen and Regan Kernke developed two mill mud spinner trucks designed to reduce mill mud application rates and enable accurate, consistent mill mud placement on cane. The spinner trucks make it economical for growers who are further away from the mills to use mill mud while also making a significant impact on water quality outcomes in the Herbert.

"It is important to have a local bridge between delivery providers, growers, and policy organisations.

Building trust and relationships in the region is the key to success."

Mrs Kernke said through existing relationships and regular communication with growers it allows them the confidence to calculate their modified fertiliser application rates.

"Programs like the LHWQP can only succeed through local on-ground support from experienced and knowledgeable extension officers working alongside growers they trust and want to collaborate with to adopt new practice changes," said Mrs Bradshaw.

"It is important for growers to be able to have a conversation with someone they already know.

The trust is already there, and it gives growers the confidence to consider change," said Mrs Kernke, involved in the LHWQP with Agro Group.

Chris Bosworth, a fourth-generation cane farmer in the Herbert District and Chairman of CANEGROWERS Herbert River, said delivery providers and growers are working together to understand how to use the correct amount of fertiliser at the right time.

"There's a lot of data being collected for the benefit of growers, we're not burying our heads in the sand, we are being proactive in trying to reduce our footprint so that we continue to use our social license to operate," said Mr Bosworth.

Herbert Cane Productivity Services Limited's (HCPSL) Project CaNE Provided growers support to develop a whole-of-farm nutrient CaNE PlanTM based on Sugar Research Australia's SIX EASY STEPS best management practice for nutrient management, an easy-to-use paper-based nutrient management and record keeping tool that is reef regulation compliant and can be used towards BMP accreditation.

HCPSL extension agronomist and project coordinator for Project CaNE Adam Royle said that trust is vital to working with growers, and it takes time to build relationships.

"We work closely with several partners associated with Project CaNE including the Department of Agriculture & Fisheries and TropWater to convey their messages to growers. Building those relationships and trust is the only way you can get that information to flow both ways, so it is critical," said Mr Royle.

In partnership with HCPSL, Project Catalyst helps to improve the environmental health of the regional waterways by working together to help sustain water quality and water flow for the health and management of our rivers and creeks. Project Catalyst's Practice Change and Grower Support Program supports growers to adopt farming practice changes using a fullscale nutrient management plan.

Extension Agronomist Bethany Donker said she interacts with growers involved in Project Catalyst regularly in both a pre-emptive and responsive capacity.

"On-farm, over the phone or via email I'm always interacting with growers and working ahead of time to determine strategies ahead of the season as much as possible but we're also adjusting things as the season goes on like grower practices," said Ms Donker.

Herbert growers have taken the opportunity to be involved in the LHWQP and its projects, resulting in improved water quality and productivity. On a program level, the biggest win has been bringing together all local organisations and delivery providers to work towards a common goal to ultimately improve the profitability, productivity, and sustainability of the sugar industry.

Bowls News Innisfail Men’s Bowls LAST Thursday afternoon’s social bowls winning team was Alf Siliato, Sam Micale, Ted Pearce, and Rob Croatto.

New members and visitors are most welcome with names to be in by 12.30 pm for a 1.00 pm start.

The final of the Club Triples took place last Friday, where Jim Martinod, Michael Roots and Mal Clifford proved too strong for Wayne O’Neill, Steve Stoter and Warren Sinclair.

Alf Siliato defeated Sam Micale in a game of Consistency Singles.

Innisfail Men’s Patron, John Morrison donated prize money for a game of mixed bowls last Saturday afternoon, which saw 24 bowlers on the green.

The winning team was Steve Howe, Peter Fennell, Barry Anderson, and Diana O’Brien, whilst the runnersup were Dell Steve, Sam Micale, Ann Rule, and Jamie Paterson.

Innisfail’s teams put in an impressive performance almost winning all three grades, and just missed the final win for a clean sweep against Southern Districts.

Tully and Cassowary Coast Cyclones junior cricket wrap MARIA GIRGENTI THE Tully Cricket Blasters program continues to grow in popularity, with over 20 youngsters registered for the program.

Last Saturday, youngsters participated in fielding, catching, throwing, bowling and batting drills in preparation for an upcoming game of diamond cricket.

On the Astro wicket, Tier 1 teams Crocodiles and Cassowaries had another close game, with Crocodiles prevailing in the last over by nine runs.

William Burns and Jaxon Lizzio put on a great partnership to start the batting innings for the Cassowaries. They made 29* and 22* respectively.

Sebastian Di Mauro finished off the innings with 61* runs, which included four sixes, his third-time halfcentury for Cassowaries this season.

Blake Riley was the only wicket-taker for the Crocodiles in the first innings.

Henry Robertson and Aiden Muzic opened the batting for Crocodiles and scored 23* and 10, respectively.

Casper Roissetter added 21 runs to the middle order before William Robertson and Blake Riley top-scored for the team with 38* and 49*, respectively.

Di Mauro, Kace Hodgson and Declan Lizzio took one wicket each for Cassowaries.

Taipans registered another win over the Kookaburras, evening it up to two games apiece so far this season.

The Kookaburras won the toss, but little else went their way.

Di Mauro top scored with 40 and Samuel Frumento 20* for Taipans, who finished with 153 (30).

William Burns and Gavin Singh each took two wickets for the Kookaburras, whilst Sekove Hart took three catches in the field. Still, the damage had already occurred with the bat.

For Kookaburras, Gavin Singh and Sekove Hart top scored with 11 and 10*, respectively, whilst Di Mauro took two wickets and Samuel Frumento two catches.

By that year, local player Ray Miguel was a Qld rep, and he continued to represent Qld from the Herbert River competition in 1966.

Greg became one the first players selected for both Qld and Australia between 1984-87 and was a member of the unbeaten 1986 kangaroo squad to the UK and France captained by Wally Lewis.

In 1988, he became an inaugural Brisbane Bronco; the same year, another former Herbert River junior, Sam Backo, made the Qld and Australian sides from the Canberra Raiders.

Sam, like Greg Dewing, played front row and featured in 7 memorable games for Qld between 19881990, as well as 6 tests for Australia between 1988-89, while playing for the Canberra Raiders and Brisbane Broncos.

It should also be noted that one of the most influential figures in Qld refereeing circles was also from the Herbert River – Nick Euclid. Nick was a referee who rose through the ranks to become chairman of the QRL Referees Association. In 2002, he was awarded the Medal Order from Australia for services to Rugby league. Nick was a great mentor to many young referees in the state, including a young Barry Gomersall, who started off in the Herbert River competition in the 1970s before going on to referee state of origin and international rugby league matches in the 1980s.

The Herbert River certainly has an enviable record of attracting and developing QLD and International players and referees!

In 1965 Barry "Tubby "Dowling moved to Ingham from Proserpine and played in the local competition.

He later joined the Brisbane Brothers club, from where he represented Qld 5 times between 196 and 1969.

In 1966, Qld and Australian player Gary Wellington, a centre from Ayr, transferred to Ingham with his job and continued to represent Qld while playing in the Herbert River competition. He was also selected as a non-playing reserve for Australia for 1 test of the 1966 series against Great Britain from Herbert River.

To round off the 1960s, Qld forward Stan Williams moved to the Herbert River competition in 1967. Stan was originally from Cairns and played for Qld in 1963 while playing for Brisbane Wests. Stan later moved back to Cairns and coached Cairns Brothers, and the club's oval is named after him.

Another rep player to join the Herbert River competition was Englishmen Bryan Todd.

Bryan had played for York and Halifax in the UK and played a match for Great Britain before migrating to Australia and moving to the Herbert River in the early 1970s.

By 1980, local junior Greg Dowling was making a name for himself in the game. Greg played Foley Shield for Herbert River in 1979 and, in 1980, moved to Innisfail, from where he made the Qld country and Qld side in one of the last inter-state matches played under residential rules in 1980.

In 1981, Greg joined the Wynnum manly club in Brisbane and was selected for the historical 1983 Qld squad to tour England before making his state of origin

The Waikato crowd went nuts, literally, as the blackshirt men schooled the green and gold boys in a lesson of footy.

To make it easy for non-sports people to understand, the team from Downunder was not good enough for the team across the Ditch, and we deserved that hiding.

With that, the footy season is finally over for real in 2023, which will see my Kangaroos jersey and Bronx gear not seeing daylight until 2030. So, to close the footy season, let me steal Apu's line from the Kwiki Mart from The Simpsons, "Thank you, come again."

Tableland Nashos Inter-Branch Rifle Shoot 2023 – Ravenshoe the National Serviceman, recording the highest total score of 261.4 for the 3 disciplines shot. Second was Tableland Branch Patron, Ray Byrnes (224.1), and third was Doug Smith (Tableland) (219.2).

NSAA THE NSAA Ravenshoe and District Branch hosted a successful Nasho shoot on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 9:30 am at their range. A field of 16 shooters from the Innisfail / Babinda / Tully Branch and the Tableland Branch contested the annual Inter-Branch Rifle Shoot at this location. The altitude and fine mild shooting conditions didn’t affect the shooting skills of 1971 intake Nasho Rusty Vonarx of Tolga, who completed a 2023 trifecta of winning competitions this year at Tinaroo, Kurrimine and now the Ravenshoe range. It has only been achieved once before, in 2018, by Innisfail shooter Lorry Calleja.

Competition rules were established before the commencement of the shoot using both .22’ rifles and pistols with the highest possible score of 300. All scores, including guests, were considered for the Branch average total, these being: • First place - Tableland Branch recorded an average of 213 points for their 7 shooters, 5 being Nashos • Second place – Innisfail / Babinda/ Tully Branch recorded an average of 163 points for their 9 shooters, 8 being Nashos.

• The Cairns Branch did not field any shooters.

• Congratulations to the various winners of the three trophies on offer, including: • “FNQ Nasho Marksman Trophy” was won by Rusty Vonarx (Tableland) as

“Friends of Nashos Trophy” was won by Peter Campion (Tableland) (236) for a Non-Nasho recording the highest total score of the disciplines

shot. Second and third were two lady shooters, Shirley Bradley (Tableland) (157.1 points) and Dani Gatti (Babinda) (146.1 points).

“Encouragement Trophy” was awarded to David Grima (Innisfail) (104.1 points) to recognise a victory for the devotion they put into their team and the importance of competing for those at the rear of the field.

After the event, Tableland Branch President John Hardy thanked President John Anderson and their members as hosts for their support of our event.

Tableland Branch Patron Ray Byrnes handed over a donation in appreciation of this support. This included the use of their facilities, rifles, and pistols, along with their coaching.

John Anderson also acted as the Range Officer, and Nickie Roach did a fantastic job keeping the scores and directing the catering team. The three Nasho shoots scheduled for 2024 are May 11 for the Tinaroo range, August 17 for the Kurrimine range and November 2 for the Ravenshoe range.

Innisfail Tigers' Soccer Club awards presentation STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIA GIRGENTI INNISFAIL Tigers' Soccer Club capped off another successful year with their end-of-season break up and awards presentation held in September at Goondi Bend Sporting Complex.

In 2023, the Innisfail Tigers' had 90 junior players registered with five Under 6/7 teams, three Under 8/9 teams, two Under 10/11/12 teams and Squirts.

This season was the first year Under 12 were back in the competition, so juniors got to play in Atherton and Mareeba, with return fixtures at Castor Park, Mourilyan and carnivals throughout the year.

Steven Tanti (President), David Marks (Vice President), Amy Wray/Rebecca Sapuppo (Secretary), Tahyne Gil (Treasurer) and Lexie Shorney (Registrar), who made up the club's executive committee, as well as everyone who contributed throughout the season received acknowledgement.

2023 coaches: Jade Melvin, Mark Nucifora, Chris Wray and Tyrone Gil (Under 6/7); Steven Tanti, Evan Coppin, Michael Blair, Donny Ferrau, Mark Brischetto and Aaron Forsyth (Under 8/9); Steve Bailey and David Marks (Under 10/11/12).

It recognises a player from any age group who has had an outstanding year on the field, as well as a player's achievement at the club and/or representative level.

The Pam Anderson Memorial Trophy for Sportsmanship is awarded in memory of long-serving Tigers secretary and Life member Pam Anderson, who served as club secretary for 10 years.

This award recognises a player who exhibits outstanding sportsmanship attributes and is a role model, being respectful to players, coaches, referees and spectators having an optimistic attitude towards players and training.

The Club Person of the Year award recognises the efforts of Innisfail Tigers' volunteers who have made an exceptional contribution to the club's success, which can be one person or a couple.

This includes players and club volunteers, as well as coaches, parents, referees/club administrators or through coaching, refereeing, fundraising, administration and facility management.

The Loth Family Trophy awarded to the Most Promising Under 10/11 player is skills-based.

The Steven Corica Trophy - Most Promising Player is donated by one of Innisfail Tigers' most celebrated players.

Corica played all his junior soccer for Innisfail Tigers' and then went on to play for Queensland, Australia and is currently the head coach of Sydney FC Men's A-league team.

This trophy acknowledges the most talented Under 10/11 player, as decided by the club coaches.

The Mick Osborne Memorial Trophy is awarded in memory of Tigers' foundation member Mick Osborne, a long-term coach of the Tigers, having started in 1976, the club's foundation year.

Local boxer Kevin Simpson ready to rumble at National First Nations Championships in Brisbane STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIA GIRGENTI INNISFAIL boxer Kevin Simpson Jnr, who represents Evolve Fight and Fitness, Machans Beach, has been invited to compete in the National First Nations Championships.

Sammy Leone personally invited Simpson from The Boss Boxing, Zillmere in Brisbane, who is an Indigenous coach/Indigenous development leader in Queensland.

Leone was impressed when he saw Simpson in action when he had three training sessions at his gym while preparing for the Golden Gloves in August 2023.

These championships hosted by The Boss Boxing will be held at Morayfield Sports and Events Centre on November 11.

It will feature an Open tournament followed by the First Nations tournament, featuring boxers from all over Australia and New Zealand.

Simpson, aged 16, a Year 11 student at Innisfail State College, will compete in the 71kg Light Middleweight Youth division and is vying for a championship belt.

this was his third time he stepped into the ring.

His first opponent, Ryder Ginty, was the same age/ weight, and Terewaamu won the contest convincingly after a referee stoppage in the first 23 seconds.

In his second fight, Terewaamu stepped up in weight and fought Lucas Cox from Ubox Sarina in the 54kg division, which he also won via unanimous decision.

Previously, Terewaamu had two exhibition fights under Babinda Boxing Club and previously fought in Townsville and then in August 2023 at Goondi Hill Hotel’s Fight Night, where he won his bout in the 45kg division against Levi Morley from FTS Cairns via unanimous decision.

Terewaamu, a Year 7 student at Innisfail State College, has boxed on and off for two years and trains three days per week.

Both boys train at Simo’s Boxing, which has been operating since February 2023 and travel to Cairns once a week for sparring at Evolve Boxing and Fitness, Machans Beach and Freedom Boxing, North Cairns.

Local boxer, Kevin Simpson is primed and ready for his fight at the National First Nationals Championships in Brisbane this Saturday.

At the National First Nations Championships, Simpson will be under the watchful eye of coach Aaron Wellman from Evolve Boxing and Fitness Machans Beach.

Simpson’s boxing record currently stands at 21 fights, 10 wins, 11 losses.

After the National First Nations Championships, Simpson may enter the ring at the Cloncurry PCYC on November 25.

On October 21, Chaise Terewaamu, aged 13, from Simo’s Boxing, Innisfail, competed in the KaOs in the Canefields hosted by Ubox Sarina at Sarina State Primary School, the first tournament held in the town for 17 years.

Terewaamu fought twice in the 44kg division, and

FISHING

NEWS with Tony Mossop IF you were lucky enough to get out to the main reef systems last week, you would have experienced some of the best Coral trout fishing for the year.

As we are between the two coral reef fin fish closures, the trout are very actively feeding.

Fishermen have been reporting easily catching their bag limit of quality fish. Spanish mackerel have been in good numbers on the reef, with most fishermen floating a ganged pilchard out the back while catching trout.

Some fishermen reported seeing schools of Spanish mackerel working their way along reef edges and chasing bait on pressure points; this year, for some reason that I don't understand, more schools of Spanish mackerel have been seen in our area than have been seen for a long time.

The next Spanish mackerel closure starts on November 10 and continues until December 1.

Around the islands, some fishermen reported good coral trout being caught while grassy, sweet lip were hard to come by.

Reasonable amounts of grunter were also caught.

Schools of baitfish continued to be present around the islands and are also on the headlands. I would expect that trevally and queenfish should start harassing these bait fish as the water begins to warm up.

Seasoned mackerel fishermen took advantage of the calm conditions inshore last week to catch some good fish; finding bait schools right on the tide change was vital to catching good quality fish.

River fishermen last week were fishing just past a full moon and with a closed season for barramundi.

Reports indicated good numbers of red bream, salmon and grunter being caught.

Some great finger mark were also caught in the deeper holes. Big herrings were plentiful in most estuary systems. As a result, the fingermark were eager to take a well presented live herring.

This week's forecast looks like 10 to 15 knots going into the weekend, With a high tide early in the morning.

Watch for the experienced local beach fishermen.

They love to fish over the high tide early in the morning before it starts to blow up.

Most of these fishermen have been around for a long time, and they know exactly what they're doing.

We also have a new moon next Monday, so the weekend fishermen have a perfect scenario. You can choose between the early morning high or the late high just on dark.

Lure fishermen will concentrate on the afternoon low for best results; a low tide between two reasonably big tides can sometimes stimulate fish to be very aggressive around the change.

Local teams shone at junior rugby league carnivals in 2023 MARIA GIRGENTI IN September, the Tully Tigers Under 14 FNQRL premiership winning team and Innisfail Brothers Under 14 team participated in the Tom Tassell Cup carnival at Jones Park, Cairns.

The boys played well and displayed fantastic sportsmanship, with a special mention to Alex Greenwood, who picked up the Jeremiah Nanai Award for Most Outstanding Forward.

Tully Tigers Under 10 boys and girls, Innisfail Brothers and Herbert River Crushers teams competed in the Gorden Tallis carnival in Townsville, whilst Tully Tigers and Herbert River Crushers Under 8 teams had their first taste of carnivals at the Dean Schifilliti Shield, hosted by Herbert River Crushers Rugby League at Artie Gofton Oval, Ingham.

Herbert River Crushers' Under 9 team participated in the Paul Bowman Challenge at Proserpine, Under 11 played in the Laurie Spina Shield in Townsville, Under 12 in the Shane Muspratt Cup in Ayr, whilst the Boys and Girls Under 15 played for the second time in the Michael Morgan Cup in Townsville.

The Herbert River Junior Crushers, Innisfail Junior Leprechauns and Tully Tigers Under 11 rugby league teams also participated in the Laurie Spina Shield held earlier this year.

A capacity of 71 teams converged on Townsville Brothers Rugby League Football Club grounds for the premier Under 11s carnival, now in its 26th year, which is one of the largest junior rugby league carnivals in Australia.

Over the two days, teams played six or seven games, and during the round games, teams scored points based on on-field, coach and spectator conduct.

The team with the highest points for each pool then participated in exhibition games at Queensland Country Bank Stadium as a curtain-raiser to the NRL game.

The non-competitive carnival focused on participation, fair play, sportsmanship and game enjoyment, with the Barcaldine Sand Goannas crowned this year's Laurie Spina Shield winners.

One of the highlights was the Fastest Feet Relay, which saw over 1,000 youngsters take part in a relay race across the width of Queensland Country Bank Stadium's main field at halftime of the Cowboys game and won by Brothers Townsville White.

Teams travelled from everywhere, which included two teams from Torres Strait Islands, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Mount Isa, Central, South-east and Western Queensland, as well as Far North Queensland.
