Community spirit soared high at Innisfail Aero Club’s Open Day STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIA GIRGENTI LATE last month, community members and visitors took advantage of the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with various experimental and home-built aircraft at Innisfail Aero’s Club Open Day at Innisfail Airport, Mundoo.

Activities on the day included formation flights, antique cars and a plane display, with a sausage sizzle, soft drinks, tea and coffee available.

Thursday, November 30, 2023 members started rebuilding Innisfail Aero Club, with the last Open Day held in 2019.

The club opened in 1975, and the land is under a 30year lease to the Cassowary Coast Regional Council.

The hall is available for community hire for functions and celebrations such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas parties.

The day aimed to promote aviation in the region, provide information on becoming a pilot, provide career paths for youth in the aviation industry, introduce recreational flying, and inform the community about airport facilities.

Innisfail Aero Club especially wanted to thank all club members and volunteers who put in a sterling effort to make the event an enormous success, along with all the pilots and aircraft owners who flew their aircraft from near and far.

This fundraising event for local cancer support groups saw $500 donated to breast cancer and $500 to prostate cancer.

Every donation helps fund worldclass research into cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment options. All the vital fundraising conducted by Cancer Council Queensland goes towards research, support services, advocacy and prevention programs.

Cancer patients in the Cassowary Coast region can utilise the Marylyn Mayo Lodge in Cairns, which assists patients and families while undergoing cancer treatment and provides transport to and from hospitals and their homes.

This Cancer Council Queensland lodge in Cairns is one of six across the state. It is only made possible through their supporters' support and fundraising efforts.

Thorsborne Trail Enhancement Project details released OFFICE OF NICK DAMETTO KAP DEPUTY LEADER AND HINCHINBROOK MP KATTER’S Australian Party (KAP) Deputy Leader and State Member for Hinchinbrook, Nick Dametto, is excited to share the Thorsborne Trail Enhancement Project details.

In the 2023-24 State Budget, Hinchinbrook Island’s Thorsborne Trail scored $1.5 million to upgrade and build new nature-based experiences and facilities. Yesterday, the Department of Environment and Science released the Thorsborne Trail Enhancement Project overview.

As stated on the Department’s website, the key project features include: • Re-design of major visitor sites/ campgrounds: Ramsay Bay, Nina Bay, Little Ramsay Bay, Zoe Bay, Mulligan Falls, and George Point.

• Design of campsites will allow for seclusion/separation from other users, with appropriate infrastructure depending on the site and user group.

• In keeping with the desired remote and wild experience, site upgrades are generally low-key, focusing on better site design and flow.

• Replacing existing and providing new toilets – in total 6 new toilets will be

built, mostly with 2 pedestals to reduce waiting times. No other buildings are planned for the island.

• Simple furniture (log seats, platforms, pack racks) will also be provided at the main campsites.

• A new longer pontoon at Ramsay Bay will replace the existing pontoon to better facilitate vessel transfer needs for the trail.

• Trail entry/exit and hiker preparation areas at Ramsay Bay (including new toilet) and George Point to better accommodate hikers – including park and cultural messaging.

• Minor trail works may be undertaken at key areas to address impacts to natural/cultural values and visitor safety issues, rather than increasing walking comfort or accessibility. This may include short alternate tracks around tidal creeks/swamps, erosion issues, minor diversions.

• Updated and new communications products about the trail for walkers and industry will be created including prehike planning, key cultural, park, trail, and safety information and messaging.

• While some new signage will be installed on the ground, much of this is planned to be done through other mediums in keeping with the trail’s remote and wild experience.

• A seasonal closure of the trail during January and February due to the high risk of unsafe conditions over this period. 1 The Hinchinbrook MP said that it’s great to see the State Government investing into tourism in North Queensland and in particular Hinchinbrook.

“We are lucky enough to have one of Australia’s largest island National Parks, Hinchinbrook Island, right at our doorstep and we are excited that the State Government is investing $1.5 million into the island however, we do need to iron out some of the issues that our local tourism operators are facing,” he said.

“Recently, we have called for a review of the Hinchinbrook Island National Park Management Plan 2017 to improve logistics to ensure that permits are hitting the maximum of 40 permits per day to support our local economy.

“I am of the understanding that management plans are reviewed every 5 to 10 years and as the Thorsborne Trail Enhancement Project is ticking along it would be timely for the Department to review the Hinchinbrook Island National Park Management Plan 2017 and address the issues with the current booking system.

“The Thorsborne Trail Enhancement

Project will enhance the hiker’s experience by improving major visitor sites and campgrounds, while still providing a remote and wild experience that hikers travel to Hinchinbrook Island for.

“Although I welcome these minor upgrades, I still believe that we are completely missing the mark on what Hinchinbrook Island could be for Queensland ecotourism. The track and the island’s natural assets really only accommodate the experienced or ablebodied hiker.

“In this day and age, we should be opening this natural asset up to everyone who wants to experience this beautiful island National Park, this means disability access and accommodation that caters to everyone.

“The Thorsborne Trail is a top tourism attraction for the electorate, and we need to ensure that it continues to attract nature enthusiasts and adventurer seekers alike to encourage new business opportunities and support our current tourism operators, accommodation and hospital businesses.”

Mr Littleproud has asked Charities Commissioner Sue Woodward AM to investigate the ACF, following an intimidatory letter that was sent to a New South Wales farmer.

The ACF’s letter demands answers into what it calls “potentially illegal land clearing”. It threatens to “take this matter further” and make “public statements about the clearing”.

Mr Littleproud said the letter was intimidatory and came despite the ACF having no proof or knowledge about the property and the ACF had no right to interfere with personal property or defame members of the community.

“The tone of ACF’s letter is clearly intimidatory,” Mr Littleproud said.

“The ACF has a charitable status and I’m calling on the Charities Commissioner to step in and ensure that the ACF is adhering to the rules of what a charity status is.

“I have written directly to the Australian Charities and Not-forprofits Commission (ACNC) about this concerning issue, particularly whether the letter breaches ACF’s obligations under Governance Standard five.

“A registered charity must always act in responsible manner with care and diligence in all its activities.

“I believe the ACF’s conduct now needs to be reviewed, to ensure it is meeting its behavioural responsibilities as a charity. The interference of the ACF should not be tolerated by ordinary Australians.”

Mr Littleproud added activist groups such as the ACF were becoming increasingly emboldened in the face of Labor’s anti-farming agenda and had started to take the law into their own hands, as if they are nature’s police force.

“The states already impose strict vegetation regulative frameworks on farmers through punitive vegetation protection laws. Farmers are in fact among the most nurturing people of all when it comes to the environment.

BETWEEN Tuesday, November 21, and Friday, November 24, Far North Highway patrol officers, along with police officers from the Cassowary Coast and Transport and Main Roads, ran a static operation on the Bruce Highway at the Dallachy truck pads Kennedy.

Locals helping locals with donations made to four community organisations MARIA GIRGENTI FOUR local community organisations have received a financial boost, with a generous donation of $700 each, raised by organisers of the 'Dr Elephant' Cabaret.

The idea to hold a cabaret was born when five local ladies and friends, Rhonda Mayocchi, Ourania Conomos, Nicole Hoare, Gina King and Kerryl

event, was at total capacity with 130 people, who danced the night away to live music by Cairns band, 'Dr Elephant'.

The event at the Innisfail Bowls Club on July 22 featured a licensed bar and lucky door prizes.

Ticket sales proceeds enabled four local community organisations to benefit, as each received a generous donation.

These funds will assist Cassowary Coast Paws and Claws with purchasing food, blankets and other vital items needed to care for the animals at the refuge.

Australian Volunteer Coastguard QF15 Innisfail will use these funds to purchase essential safety equipment, enabling community members' continued safety on the water.

Innisfail Meals on Wheels will use these funds to pay associated fuel costs for their volunteer delivery drivers.

These funds will enable Etty Bay Surf Life Saving Club to finish paying off the vast marquee used for club and community events.

All four local organisations are incredibly grateful to Gina King and her committee for their support and generosity.

Two more fundraising cabarets are planned in 2024, one in February and another in July, and local band 'Zacariah' will return to rock the house.

The National Seniors Australia report Suitable Housing in Later Life shows housing affordability has plagued 65% of respondents aged 50 and older.

“The Age Pension was designed on the assumption older people own their home, however 15% do not and this is set to rise as the cost of owning a home skyrockets,” Mr Grice said.

“Our research shows 39% of older renters experienced severe cost of living impacts because of rising living costs.

“Unsurprisingly, renters were nine times more likely than others to be ‘quite concerned’ or ‘acutely concerned’ about their ability to afford housing while mortgagees were four times more likely.

“Housing security clearly remains a problem for renters, with many wanting easier and more affordable pathways to buy, or more secure, affordable, long -term rental options.

“The results support our call for an increase to the Commonwealth Rent Assistance. While we were pleased to see a 15% increase to the maximum rate in the Federal Budget, it is not enough.”

It’s not just older renters facing housing issues. Older homeowners, especially those still with a mortgage, face cost pressures and difficulties accessing agefriendly housing.

Older homeowners face a number of issues, including rising interest rates; the cost and hassle of downsizing to age-friendly housing (including stamp duty); the cost of retirement villages and aged care; and the cost of council rates, body corporate fees, and utilities.

Importantly, the research revealed a desire for smaller, more manageable homes and yards with onethird of older people willing to consider a move in later life. But barriers to downsizing remain.

The scarce availability of age-friendly housing stock and other retirement options was a major barrier for 19% of homeowners, stamp duty costs were a barrier for 32% of respondents while the hassle of buying, selling and moving was a barrier for 50%.

“We need urgent action on housing, such as housing built for seniors specific needs, in conjunction with aged care that recognises the realities of older people’s living circumstances,” Mr Grice said.

The report was based on data from the 11th National Seniors Social Survey of more than 5300 people aged 50 and older.

TRANSFER rice mixture to a bowl. Cool for 5 mins.

ADD parsley and fetta to rice mixture.

LAY filo pastry on work surface. Cover with a clean damp tea towel.

FOLD 1 sheet of filo pastry in half horizontally.

PLACE ½ cup of rice mixture in one corner of the filo pastry. Fold diagonally to form triangle shape.

BRUSH with milk and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

November 2023 General Meeting Update At this week’s General Meeting held on Tuesday 28 November 2023, Council: • Approved funding of $3,000 (excl. GST) to the Women in Sugar Herbert for the 23rd Women in Sugar Australian Conference to be held over three days, commencing on Sunday 28 April 2024.

The theme for the conference is ‘Women Powering Agriculture’.

The conference is open to anyone to participate.

The proposed program for the event will certainly showcase the Hinchinbrook region; and • Adopted the 2022-2023 Annual Report.

The Annual Report reflects the Corporate Plan for 2021–2025 and Operational Plan for 2022-2023.

The Annual Report is the formal reporting mechanism to the community, respective Government Agencies and other stakeholders.

Babinda Museum Wins three State Excellence Awards BABINDA TASKFORCE LESS than a year after its official opening, the Babinda Museum has won three Gallery and Museum Achievement Awards (GAMAA) at the Museums & Galleries Queensland 2023 awards ceremony on Wednesday November 22.

Babinda Museum was announced as winner for its outstanding achievement in the category of “Projects

by Organisations that are Volunteer Run” for its project Building the Babinda Museum.

The Building the Babinda Museum project began in 2017 when a small group of Babinda residents, who shared an interest in Babinda’s history, formed a steering committee with the intention of starting a museum. After five years of work, the Babinda Museum was officially opened to the public in January of this year.

“They (the committee) have created a quality museum and cultural attraction for Babinda,” said Museums & Galleries Executive Director Rebekah Butler.

Babinda Museum committee President Tanya Tuttle said that given the calibre of the award winners, the entire Babinda Museum committee were absolutely thrilled with their win.

“It was surreal seeing the name ‘Babinda Museum’ on the screen at the awards ceremony, alongside the names of the other organisation winners, the Museum of Brisbane, and the Gallery of Modern Art,” said Mrs Tuttle.

Tanya Tuttle herself was also announced as a winner for her outstanding achievement in the category of “Individuals: Volunteer.”

Mrs Tuttle has been the driving force, offering up a shop space in the Babinda Taskforce building, and leading the Babinda Museum steering committee through the development of the Babinda Museum project since its inception back in 2017.

“Tanya is recognised for her tremendous efforts and unwavering commitment to establishing the Babinda Museum,” said Rebekah Butler.

Mrs Tuttle said she was honoured to have won for her work in the individual category, however, she was somewhat uncomfortable with being ‘singled out’ when the building of the museum relied so heavily on the eight-person committee, as well as the broader Babinda community.

“I cannot overstate how much this was a whole-ofcommunity project,” she said. “For example, a couple

of years ago, when we had no way of moving the display cases - which were transported all the way up from Brisbane - the owners of SPAR, the town’s supermarket, let us borrow the supermarket forklift.”

“Also last year, in October, when we realised that we didn’t quite have enough money to get everything done in time for the January 2023 opening date, the surrounding community donated almost $30,000, in just over eight weeks, to help us get the project over the line.”

Dr Jo Wills, Senior Museum Development Officer, Far North Queensland was announced as joint winner for her outstanding achievement in the category of “Individuals: Paid”.

Dr Wills was nominated for her work on the Babinda Museum, for providing exemplary advice, supervision, and hands on support to the steering committee, a group of volunteers who not only had no funding but also no experience in museum development.

“The ‘heavy lifting’ of the project was certainly done by our committee,” said Babinda Museum committee secretary Lee Antoni.

“But the guidance and support Dr Jo provided not only ensured our success but was crucial to ensuring the professional standard of the museum and the displays within it.”

Mrs Tuttle said the whole committee were humbled by the Museum’s success at this year’s GAMAA awards.

“Having three aspects of this project recognised with successful nominations was a wonderful achievement,” she said. “But to win all three categories we were nominated in is just incredible.”

The Babinda Museum, located in the historic Whitchurch building at 49 Munro St Babinda, is a not- for-profit contemporary community museum and is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-3pm, closed Sunday and Monday.

Harm Of Net Fishing Bans Will Be Widespread OFFICE OF SUSAN MCDONALD IS A TOWNSVILLE-BASED LNP SENATOR FOR QUEENSLAND, AND SHADOW MINISTER FOR RESOURCES AND FOR NORTHERN AUSTRALIA

CLAIMS that banning commercial net fishing is necessary to protect the Great Barrier Reef and tourism jobs ignores the human cost of unnecessary and harsh government intervention, and also raises serious national security questions for North Queensland.

How does Labor justify also imposing net bans in the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Great Sandy Straits when they are about 600km and 155km respectively from the nearest part of the Great Barrier Reef?

It is deliberately misleading to insinuate gillnets are used on the Great Barrier Reef, but Queensland and Federal Labor are using this scare tactic to justify their betrayal of these communities.

These net bans will essentially wipe out Karumba and Normanton.

Families will move away, risking the closure of already limited education and childcare services.

House prices will collapse and residents will be left with crushing debt.

There will be no jobs, including for Indigenous communities.

Major support centres for fishing such as Townsville, Mareeba, Cairns and Cardwell will suffer job losses.

Consumers and retailers from Cooktown to Melbourne will lose ready and affordable access to wild-caught barramundi.

Labor likes to talk about protecting jobs but it is ignoring the impacts on fishers, net makers, marine mechanics, chandlers, cold storage operators, ice makers, transport companies, fish and chip shops, and seafood outlets.

I have met impacted fishers and seen their anguish, frustration and despair.

Seafood retailers from Cairns to Brisbane tell me there is no doubt these

net bans will drive prices up for all seafood.

I challenge Labor Senators and Queensland MPs to look impacted people in the eye and explain why their livelihoods are being ruined.

But they have run for cover at every turn.

The Queensland Fisheries Minister has refused media interviews, even when he turned up to buy fish and chips from a Townsville shop while a journalist was there interviewing the owners about the net ban’s harsh impacts.

Can’t he see the irony of destroying the industry that supplies one of his favourite meals?

Of course not, because Labor’s obsession with appeasing international radical activist groups is far more important than defending its own citizens.

People are sick of the buckpassing.

The Federal Fisheries Minister blames the Queensland Fisheries Minister, the Queensland Minister blames the Federal Environment Minister. No one is taking responsibility for the northern part of the state. It’s a disgrace.

The other implication for North Queensland is that without net fishermen, there will be fewer eyes out for illegal boat arrivals, drug running and illegal fishing.

Border Force does an outstanding job intercepting these incursions but the role commercial fishers also play in monitoring our northern borders cannot be discounted.

Fishermen have gone well beyond the requirements for sustainable fishing and have been willing innovators in improving their industry’s environmental measures.

Gulf fishers created and funded a barramundi hatchery in Karumba to release fingerlings back into the system each year.

They also asked to extend the Gulf closed barramundi season for an extra month – four months instead of the

government-mandated three.

They have established their own “no go” zones to reduce pressure on fish populations, and they set up their nets far from where they know non-target species congregate.

But Labor has given them zero credit.

All it has done is piled on more regulation and more criticism.

Labor claims net fishing “only” accounts for 2.6% of the East Coast wild-caught seafood harvest, but what is the figure when the Gulf and Great Sandy Strait is included?

This figure also doesn’t factor in the value of wild-caught barramundi - an iconic species sold around the country,

highly sought after by tourists and which fetches top dollar at restaurants.

Nor does it account for the economic impacts on regional North Queensland or the cost increases already struggling families will have to pay for seafood.

Australian governments should be seeking ways to work with primary producers to ensure they can keep operating, not shutting them down.

The demise of commercial fishing in North Queensland, the decline of northern communities, the national security ramifications and the impacts on consumers and family businesses will be to Queensland and Federal Labor’s eternal shame.

Scientists delivering 100k baby corals in major step towards helping the Reef AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF MARINE SCIENCE (AIMS) SCIENTISTS are for the first time bringing together a range of methods to breed, treat and deliver around 100,000 baby corals to the Great Barrier Reef in what is thought to be the largest coral restoration research trial ever undertaken.

Led by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), the test operation involves a number of partners and will give scientists a better understanding of how techniques developed over recent years are best operationalised at large scales after mass coral spawning – the key annual event for reproduction and renewal on the Great Barrier Reef.

AIMS Research Program Director and sub-program leader of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP) Dr Line Bay, said the field trial was a major milestone in coral conservation aquaculture and restoration research to develop tools to help restore reefs beset by disturbances, including those caused by climate change.

“Each annual coral spawning, teams of scientists, engineers and technicians from a range of organisations in RRAP have been developing a pipeline of approaches in AIMS’ National Sea Simulator (SeaSim), to help fast track recovery after disturbances like coral bleaching.

“The last few years of research have greatly improved our understanding of how to raise enormous numbers of healthy baby corals in aquaculture facilities using technological and biological techniques, including selecting corals for their natural heat tolerance.

“With this research, we are further refining these techniques, and combining multiple investigations into our largest field trial yet. It’s a crucial achievement and an important step towards understanding how these corals will perform under natural conditions experienced on the Great Barrier Reef now and into the future,” she said.

AIMS coral reproduction and aquaculture scientist Dr Muhammad Abdul Wahab said the trial was delivering four times as many corals to the Reef as last year.

“We’ll be deploying 10,000 devices over two field trips, carrying around 100,000 individual young corals, and then monitoring their progress at three monthly intervals. Last year we deployed 2,000 devices so this is a big step up.”

Dr Abdul Wahab said the subsequent aim is to deliver up to three million devices in the next iteration of deployments over a three-to-five-year period, bringing millions of baby corals to the Reef. But the scale of this deployment was some years off yet.

“We are on a journey of upscaling the production and deployment of healthy and diverse corals on reefs in a way that is as efficient and cost effective as possible,” he said.

New technology is helping boost the number of coral larvae produced for the trials, reducing reliance on human handling and labour and improving efficiencies.

The AutoSpawner, designed by AIMS, is an automated aquaria system designed to aid fertilisation of large numbers of coral eggs, reducing the laborious task for scientists of producing coral larvae. The AutoSpawner is capable of producing more than seven million larvae in a single night.

Larvae are settled onto special tiles and reared into baby corals over the course of a few weeks before being placed into different ceramic devices designed by AIMS to help deliver large numbers of healthy young corals to the Reef safely and efficiently.

corals are being explored such as harnessing natural cues to encourage larvae to settle quickly and grow on preferred surfaces. Scientists are also applying non-toxic antifoul coating on deployment devices to reduce competition from algae and protect the young during their first year of life on a reef.

The trial began in October when adult corals from the central region of the Reef were brought into the SeaSim in Townsville and bred during mass coral spawning events in November. The teams are continuing the work during this week’s coral spawning event.

The next step is delivering the devices, each holding around 10 young corals, onto several reefs in a process known as coral seeding. Some were delivered to the Reef following inshore coral spawning in early November, and more will be taken next month following this week’s spawning.

Dr Abdul Wahab said while raising large numbers of healthy baby corals in aquaculture facilities in a cost-effective way was challenging but feasible, the ultimate goal was to deliver them to the Reef and help them survive under natural reef conditions.

“This year, devices are being both carefully placed into plots by divers and freely deployed from a small vessel to compare how the young corals fare in both deployment scenarios.

“This trial will help us to answer real world questions about how the devices fall through the water, what effect they

have on the surrounding environment and what happens to the young corals after the devices land on the seabed.

This is something we haven’t tried yet but will be essential to understand if we are to improve restoration efficiencies to work at the scales we need.”

Dr Cedric Robillot, Executive Director for RRAP, said the science is clear – warming ocean temperatures are locked in and emissions reductions alone are no longer enough to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

“We must pioneer a toolkit of solutions to help restore coral reefs at scale,” he said.

“This ground-breaking trial which sees a significant increase in the number of corals deployed on the Reef, brings together many scientific and engineering breakthroughs from across multiple organisations to take us a step closer to deploying millions of heat-tolerant corals on the Reef every year.”

Dr Bay added: “There is no silver bullet solution to helping the Great Barrier Reef under a changing climate – a range of methods are needed to work together to provide compounding benefits, along with ongoing bestpractice reef management and emissions reductions.”

Spawning activities in the National Sea Simulator at AIMS are being conducted in collaboration with Southern Cross University, Taronga Conservation Society, The University of Queensland, James Cook University, Griffith University and Queensland University of Technology.

RRAP is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

LAST Tuesday, November 21, fourteen ladies from Innisfail participated in South Johnstone Bowls Club’s Ladies Christmas break-up.

Most of the ladies got into the Christmas spirit on the green and dressed in their best Christmas attire.

Thirty-six ladies from Innisfail, Tully, Edmonton, Silkwood, and South Johnstone took part in clubselected triples, played one game of 14 ends, and then enjoyed a scrumptious afternoon tea.

Mission Beach surf lifesaver, Charlize Gee gained selection in the Queensland Country team MARIA GIRGENTI MISSION Beach surf lifesaver Charlize Gee was selected for the Queensland Country team and competed in Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Inter-Branch Championships at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast last weekend, November 25 - 26.

These championships attracted teams from Point Danger Branch, South Coast Branch, Sunshine Coast Branch and Queensland Country, and over two days, provided an opportunity to highlight one of Queensland’s most iconic volunteer movements, surf lifesaving.

The best Under 13 - Under 17 athletes across Queensland gained selection to compete as part of a Branch team for the Championships.

Gee’s selection came after her gold medal-winning performances in the beach sprint and beach flags at the recent North Queensland Branch Championships held at Etty Bay and North Aussies at Mackay.

Charlize Gee from Mission Beach Surf Life Saving Club recently competed in Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Inter-Branch Championships on the Gold Coast.

Tully and Cassowary Coast junior cricket teams wrap MARIA GIRGENTI TIER 1 LAST Saturday, Cassowaries (232) and Crocodiles (191) teams piled on the runs at Kim Carroll Fields, Tully.

The Crocodiles took first advantage of the fast, dry outfield with Jaxon Lizzio 37 and William Robertson 34.

Cassowaries’ top bowlers: Declan Lizzio 3 wickets, Sebastian Di Mauro 2, William Burns and Laine Spencer 1.

Etty Bay SLSC members performed exceptionally well and finished with a stack of medals.

Aria Di Palma and Brandon Borsato won the Under 10 age championship and Baylee Worth led Etty Bay Club’s March Past team.

GOOD weather conditions allowed reef fishermen to access our main reef systems last week; coral trout continued to be caught in good numbers, along with Red Throat Emperor. Even with the bigger tides on the full moon, nannygai and Emperor fishermen reported some impressive catches.

Modern braid fishing line can allow a fisherman to continue, to fish in strong currents that would not be possible with monofilament. Even 20 minutes in a good spot can be the difference between a good and a bad day.

Fishing around the islands last week was dominated mainly by mackerel. Lots of small spotties have been caught, along with a few doggies. Grey mackerel continue to be seen in good numbers and size.

There have been reports of Spanish mackerel accidentally being caught and released. Most mackerel fishermen now run single hooks on their lures, this makes releasing fish a lot easier and safer for both fish and fishermen.

Schools of tuna continue to chase bait along with trevally and queenfish. Big bait schools are present around the island and will continue to move in and out with the tide until the wet season starts. Some bait fish will come close to the coast with the heavy rain, feeding on the nutrient-rich fresh water.

Around the river mouths and bays, fishermen reported good catches of red bream, grunter and trevally. Fishermen took full advantage of the early morning high tide, with most fish caught just before the high.

Also helping fishermen was our first thunderstorm Saturday night; generally, after a storm, the fishing improves.

Reasonably good red bream fishing in the rivers was reported with many smaller fish caught.

Some good grunters were also caught in the deeper holes and along ledges. Peeled prawns are the preferred bait grunter fishermen use; they outfish most other baits consistently.

Those who put their crab pots in were rewarded with some good crabs. However, crabbing with big tides can see your crab pots wash away with the strong current. Always try to tie your floats firmly to a branch if possible.

Bait fishermen will be doing the same collecting bait first thing in the morning on the low tide and trying their favourite snags up the river for a red bream. Beach and Bay fishermen will probably turn up a little later in the morning, find a nice shady spot and fish to the lunchtime high tide. Reef fishermen will be watching that afternoon. North easterly, with the showers, it won't pick up much.

The night tides look suitable for the nannygai, and Red Emperor, fisherman. If the weather allows finger Mark, fisho's will also be ready just in case.
