Nowhere on earth do Australia’s war dead lie in greater numbers, than in the soil of the Western Front in France and Belgium.

Thirty Queensland Police constables who joined the Australian Imperial Force and the British Expeditionary Force never made it home.

Di Mecking performed the role of parade marshal, who called everyone to attention as the 'Last Post' sounded, before the 'Reveille' played, followed by two minute's silence observed at the 11th hour and reading of The Ode. Innisfail RSL President, Ron Henderson addressed those in attendance, and B J Price offered up a dedication prayer.

Piper Marc Darveniza played the 'Lament', during the wreath laying ceremony.

Wreaths placed at the cenotaph included 51 FNQR, RAAF, all RAR Regiments, 107 SQN AAFC, National Servicemen's Association, Innisfail RSL, Innisfail Police Service, Australian Volunteer Coastguard QF15, student leaders from Innisfail State College, Good Counsel Primary School and Good Counsel College, as well as other individuals and community groups.

Good Counsel Primary School captains, Leighton Genocchio and Lockie Locastro laid a wreath.

LAST Saturday, a solemn service to commemorate Remembrance Day at Innisfail RSL cenotaph took place, as those in attendance paused and reflected on the suffering and sacrifice

by Australian soldiers in all wars and armed conflicts.

At 11.00 am on November 11, 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent, after more than four years of continuous warfare.

This year marked 105th anniversary since the signing of the armistice agreement by Great Britain, France and Germany that ended World War I in 1918, a key moment in Australia’s history.

In the four years of the war, more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and over 60,000 Australian service personnel had died.

The dead lay in cemeteries and unmarked graves around the world from New Britain in the southwest Pacific,

In 1919, King George V proclaimed one minutes’ silence at 11.00am on November 11, the first Remembrance Day. After WWII, the Australian and British governments changed the name of Armistice Day to Remembrance Day in recognition of all those who died, suffered in war, and those who continue to fight for the nation’s freedoms and way of life.

Today the Australian War Memorial’s Roll of Honour lists the names of more than 102,000 Australians who have lost their lives in war and conflict.

Two hundred and seventy-five of those lost lives were from the Innisfail district, whose names are now immortalised on the Great War Honour Roll in Innisfail Shire Hall.

THERE is currently an impasse between the Hinchinbrook Shire Council and Council staff represented by the CFMEU regarding a pay rise agreement over the coming three years.

The negotiations between the Hinchinbrook Shire Council and staff regarding the pay has been over the last six months, and both parties inform that they have engaged in the negotiations in good faith.

"In the last negotiations through COVID-19 when council asked us to do the right thing for financial sustainability.

They asked us to help, and we accepted

(4%) a 1% pay rise, a 1.5% pay rise and a 1.5% pay rise over the three years of that deal," said Mr Peter Wright, the Union Organiser for the CFMEU that looks after the Hinchinbrook Shire Council, "We did the right thing by council and that has put our members on the poverty line. Our members are choosing whether to put fuel in the car, food on the table or a roof over their heads. What council is paying them at the moment they can't do all three."

The council was approached for comments in this matter and responded the following statement: • “Council is taking responsible action

during tough economic times which is fair for both staff and ratepayers;

• We are ensuring this Council remains financially sustainable when budgets in other local governments across Queensland dive into the red; • ·We simply can’t afford the Union’s demands if we want to keep delivering the services our residents enjoy, rely on and deserve; and • Council is bringing the matter to a head with application for conciliation with the Industrial Relations Commission as it has negotiations have reached an impasse. Council is conscious that it would like the matter of wage increases agreed as soon as possible so that employee wage increases can be provided where possible prior to Christmas.”

At the time of this article, the Hinchinbrook Shire Council offered 13% over three years: 5%, 4%, and 4%. The

CFMEU informed The Wet Tropic Times that they had reduced their request to 19% over the next three years: 7%, 6% and 6%. "It's all about CPI. We are asking to be put up where CPI is," said Mr Wright.

Through the discussion with Mr Wright, it was noted that the staff of the Hinchinbrook Shire Council believe that the council's current financial concerns could have been avoided if Hinchinbrook Council had not chosen to outsource the work they believe could have been completed by council staff.

However, it was noted in a discussion with Mayor Ramon Jayo for the July 13 edition of the Wet Tropic Times that the significant decisions made to outsource work previously allocated to Council Staff were made due to legislative changes. It was compounded by extra expenditure due to an aging infrastructure that needs improvement, which requires significant spending.

THIS year, the Herbert River Museum in Halifax held a Melbourne Cup function at the Macknade Community Bowling Club.

We were excited to do this as one of Hinchinbrook’s finest caterers, Marion and Piera, supplied excellent food for all our guests.

We were able to provide room for 100 people, and nobody was disappointed.

Our judges picked the best dressed, and best hat winners, and the 50-odd raffle prizes were a hit with everyone. Our compere Coral dressed for the occasion.

We want to thank our sponsors for the day, Nick Dametto and various business houses in Halifax and Ingham. Without their support, we would not be able to run our raffles.

Also, a big thank you to Joe Debono for the wonderful fresh vegetable baskets he donated.

I would like to thank all our volunteers for the hours they put into this function.

Petition shows statewide support for a sustainably managed fishery, including gillnets OFFICE OF NICK DAMETTO HINCHINBROOK MP AND KAP DEPUTY LEADER THE Queensland community has rallied behind a parliamentary petition with almost 10,000 signatories pledging their support towards the continuation of sustainable gillnet fishing practices along Queensland’s east-coast.

The petition, raised by Principal Petitioner Lucas Dansie, and sponsored

by Hinchinbrook MP and Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) Deputy Leader Nick Dametto, was tabled in the Parliament on Tuesday, November 14 with an official total of 9,991 signatures.

The petition was in response to a joint State and Federal Government decision to ban gillnets along the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) from December 31, 2023. A $160 million compensation package was promised, however those in the industry that will be impacted are still waiting to hear what reimbursement they may be entitled to for the loss of their business enterprises.

Recently, the Hinchinbrook MP called on the Fisheries Minister, Mark Furner MP to immediately withdraw the decision to ban gillnets or at least postpone the bans by 12 months which would allow fishers to continue making a living until Government was clear about what the remuneration packages would look like.

“Only a few months ago we stood on the steps of Parliament House with the Queensland Seafood Industry Association (QSIA) and the commercial fishers impacted by the east-coast gillnet fishing ban, asking for the State Government to readdress what is going on here and consider the livelihoods of these people,” Mr Dametto said.

“Off the back of that, a parliamentary petition was raised by Lucas Dansie and that closed with just short of 10,000 signatures from people right across the state who wanted to support local wild caught Australian seafood.

“These people want to make sure there is a way forward in the future to ensure that sustainable fishing is carried out but also that the nets stay in the water.

“We’re talking about intergenerational fishing families. The Green family from the Burdekin said they have been doing this over three generations and they want to continue doing it.

“People have put some much time, energy and resources into making sure that they are doing this as sustainably as possible and now we have a State Government that is beholden to UNESCO when it comes to what happens here in Queensland. “$160 million has been committed from the State and Federal Governments to reimburse everyone affected. A taskforce was set up to investigate how that money should be distributed and I understand that report sits with the Minister now.

“Most of these families are not earning a dollar right now and Queenslanders want to know what is going on with that report.

“We’re asking them to postpone the gillnet fishing bans by 12 months to

give everyone, including Government and departmental staff, some breathing space and to ensure that if we’re going to move forward, it is done in a measured way.

“We’re saying they need to sit down with the fishers and sit down with the QSIA. We don’t want a repeat of what happened at yesterday’s QSIA annual general meeting where a departmental officer was sent down to deliver messages on behalf of Government.

“Some of the things I heard from yesterday’s meeting were disgusting and unprofessional. The Fisheries Minister should be apologising and pushing these bans back or even better, scrapping it all together.

“Once upon a time the DPI (as it then was) used to stand up for industry and acted as a support mechanism between industry and Government. Now it seems the DAF we have today is engulfed by people with WWF affiliations and clear conflicts of interests who are hellbent on shutting the industry down.

“Imagine if the Education Minister was closing down schools or the Health Minister was shutting hospitals. Here we have an Agricultural and Fisheries Minister who is shutting down the very industries he is tasked to protect.”

QSIA, Executive Officer Mr David Bobbermen said yesterday’s QSIA meeting was emotive with a number of fishermen and their spouses speaking to department officers about the decision that will be impacting their lives and communities.

“It was really distressing,” Mr Bobbermen said.

“I am hearing from families who don’t know if they can give their kids anything this Christmas or go on a holidays this year. They want to know what’s in their future.

“What I found most disheartening was when I relayed these concerns to a Senior Officer in the Department of Environment the response I got was ‘… what are they worrying about, they’re going to get a cheque’. I had to walk out of the room. It was embarrassing.

“Not the Minister, nor the Premier have had the guts to face these people and tell them what they’re doing. They keep sending puppets from departments to deliver a message which for the most part is ‘we can’t tell you anything’.

“WWF are currently trialling gillnets in other areas of the world to reduce interactions with threatened and endangered species so these claims that gillnets aren’t socially acceptable is rubbish.

“The Queensland and Federal Governments have a moral belief they are running with. There is no science behind it.

“We don’t fish on the reef. We provide sustainably harvested seafood from a naturally renewable source. We extract the seafood in a way so that what we harvest is available next year and for many years to come.”

Commercial net fisher, Mr Neil Green, attended yesterday’s QSIA meeting in Townsville but claimed it was a nothing meeting with “a lack of empathy shown

to us fishermen and our businesses”.

Mr Green said he believed government had sent these bureaucrats up here to test the waters to see our response to the predetermined direction they are rolling with.

“They personally insulted me by calling us ‘unprofessional’ as leaders of industry of the past, something I donated mine and my family’s life to for seven years,” he said.

“I reckon if Furner does not dismiss this bureaucrat at the very least he should be getting her to be making a public apology for her comments. This is the most disgusting process I have ever encountered in the 47 years I’ve been in the industry.”

Traeger MP and KAP Leader, Robbie Katter said the Gulf was home to a sustainable fishery that provided fresh seafood to Australians and also underpinned the many services up in the Gulf such as fuel supply, general transport and employment in Indigenous communities, all of which have not been consulted on this decision.

“When the Fisheries went up there for so called consultation, the messaging given was that the rest of the world doesn’t like gillnet fishing and this was purely just a deal with UNESCO,” he said.

“They aren’t even bothering with science anymore and I think that’s the

truly scary thing, that this issue is bigger than commercial fishing, the issue here is sovereignty.

“This is nothing more than political posturing to groups such as UNESCO. Some political parties might be okay with this but we’re not and it’s disheartening to see the Labor MPs up there in the north, who are meant to be representing these people, and they’re sitting here in Brisbane silent on the issue.

“I’d like the Premier and the Minster to stop building policies around Finding Nemo and David Attenborough.”

KAP Member for Hill, Shane Knuth said the State Government succumbing to UNESCO just demonstrated a weak Government.

“A good government would have said ‘Stuff UNESCO, we’re here for the best interest of small businesses and the best interest of Queenslanders’,” Mr Knuth said.

“Firstly, they came out saying that this was about protecting the Great Barrier Reef, but now they are targeting the Gulf so that’s got nothing to do with the Great Barrier Reef.

“I say to this Government - get up here and stand up for Queenslanders and small businesses.” A meeting is scheduled with Minister Furner this Thursday, 16 November to discuss the issue.

Who benefits?

SARI RUSSO | BA SOCIAL WORK It is difficult to look ahead to the Christmas holidays and think that the battle of small independent commercial fishers continues and what that will look like in 12 months if we don’t have a positive response from the Queensland government before 2024 is finished.

It is good to see so many signatories pledging their support for the continuation of sustainable gillnet fishing practices, which has resulted in a pause on the ban for the next 12 months.

But will communities continue to rally around our fishers, or will they get too tired of the fight or distracted by other pressures of life?

I wonder how a government can believe it is OK to ban an Australian industry, particularly when they have spent a fortune on ensuring a sustainable product. Yet, the Government will allow fish to be brought in from overseas companies without the accountability requirements and destroy an Australian industry.

The issue is that we are not getting a better product; we are just destroying Australian produce.

I have been part of many discussions regarding the ramifications of free trade on Australia and that signing up for free trade agreements has yet to have positive long-term results for Australia and Australian industry and maintaining the Australian Standard of living.

70-year celebration of Abergowrie State School SARI RUSSO LAST Saturday, on the afternoon of the 11th day of the 11th Month, the Abergowrie community came together to reminisce on the 70 years of Abergowrie State School.

A soldier settler block stationed in Abergowrie after WWII brought the need to establish a school in the area, mainly because no vehicles at that time could accommodate the students attending schools outside the area.

The heritage of Abergowrie is showcased by how often the community pulled together to overcome challenges. Due to the geographic challenges of early settlement, they often gathered for recreational activities at the school facility.

Mr Troy Wyles-Whelan, an Indigenous student from Victoria Plantation, was invited to conduct a welcome to country at Abergowrie State School due to having family that had attended the school. He chose to do something different in the place of Welcome to Country.

"I thought about it overnight, and I thought about today's

significance – 11th Day 11th Hour, and I contemplated Welcome to Country. I wanted to demonstrate that it is not about Welcome to Country it is about how we fought for this country, we all live in this country, and this is where we want to be," said Mr Troy WylesWhelan, "I thought of the common ground that we have and that my Great Great Grandfather fought in the war alongside his fellow Australians."

Because of his heart for Australia, Mr Wyles-Whelan shared a catchphrase: We Fought | We Share | We Believe in this country. The community members in attendance appreciated his sentiments.

The Abergowrie school grew quickly despite a mistaken belief that only a few students would need the facility. "I think the first day it opened 30 turned up," said Jim Kemp, one of the students at Abergowrie State School in the very first year it began. "I was met at the gate by one of my Macknade friends. The first day I came here my friend was here to greet me. It felt so much easier for me then because I knew somebody."

"Back then I don't think it was quite as strict because the students overtook the teachers, until Mrs Abbot turned up. She was a good lady and she got us into gear."

With many small state school facilities having been closed around the region, Nick Dametto, MP for Hinchinbrook, shared that he was committed to ensuring that the facilities would remain available for students in the area as long as there was a need.

Congratulations Rini Dallavanzi Hinchinbrook Visitor Information Centre (HVIC) Volunteer, Rini Dallavanzi, won the prestigious Individual Award Category for “Outstanding Contribution by a Volunteer” at the North Queensland Tourism and Events Awards on Friday 10 November 2023.

This award category aims to recognise exceptional contributions to the Townsville North Queensland tourism industry by an individual.

Mayor's Christmas Appeal Launched On Thursday 9 November 2023, Mayor Ramon Jayo launched the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal by requesting Hinchinbrook residents to add a little light, love and laughter to those less fortunate in our community.

Mayor Jayo urged all residents to spread some extra Christmas cheer and encourage you all to put just one extra toy or non-perishable grocery item in your trolley when shopping and place it under the Christmas tree in the customer service area of the Hinchinbrook Shire Council main office.

For those residents who feel they do not have enough time to purchase a gift or food, you may like to pop into Council’s main office and quickly make a monetary donation.

All donations will be passed on to the Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre to purchase appropriate items for those in need this Christmas.

This appeal will run until 5.00pm Wednesday 13 December 2023 to allow time for all items/gifts to be delivered to the Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre for distribution prior to Christmas.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) Awareness Month CRPS is a poorly understood condition where a person experiences persistent and debilitating pain.

In light of CRPS Awareness Month (November), the Rotary Park fountain was dyed orange to acknowledge the one in 3,800 people diagnosed with CRPS every year.

Let this be a reminder to start a conversation about CRPS and stand with those affected by this condition so that together we can improve lives today, and build a world free from CRPS tomorrow.

Poor Government Legislation Threatens Closure of 89-Year-old lnnisfail Business OFFICE OF SHANE KNUTH MP FOR HILL

MEMBER for Hill Shane Knuth and lnnisfail based business Northern Iron & Brass Foundry Pty Ltd (NIBF) are calling on the State Government to amend legislation and permanently exempt the 89-year-old business from its Waste Levy, first introduced in 2019.

"This is another example of poorly thought-out legislation that has had a devastating effect on NIBF, who employ up to 70 people in lnnisfail," said Mr Knuth.

"NIBF has been granted a financial exemption, three times, from the Waste Levy, first introduced in 2019, with assurances the issue would be fixed."

The businesses latest exemption is expected to run out on December 31, 2023, however the State Government has failed to live up to its commitment to amend the legislation and according to Knuth seem to be avoiding facing the issue.

After raising the matter in parliament, a number of times and holding a number of meetings, Mr Knuth said he was fed up.

"Saving an 89-year-old business which employs 70 people may not sound like much in the ivory towers down south, but it would be similar to

losing 2,000 jobs in Brisbane," he said.

Mr Knuth said not only has the business been hit with a 200 per cent increase in waste disposal costs via the levy, but the changes to and removal of electricity tariff 37 from July 2020, has forced the foundry into a higher tariff and increasing electricity costs by a further 40 per cent.

"Adding to that their Emergency Management Levy went from $16,000 to $48,000 in one year," Mr Knuth said.

"They are being hit from all sides by a State Government who has lost touch with regional Queenslanders and shows a complete lack of interest in saving regional manufacturing industries.'

Knuth said he was sickened that poor government legislation and apathy can cause an established company to be in danger of closing its doors.

"I am putting the government on notice to fix the issues or risk the closure of the business, which will be on their heads." Mr Knuth said.

Northern Iron and Brass Foundry operations manager Joe Vecchio said the State Government needs to help the lnnisfail foundry so that waste was not going to regulated landfill and could continue to be recycled.

"The State Government has given us three exemptions since the legislation was first introduced but have done nothing to fix the core root of the problem in the legislation," Mr Vecchio said.

"We have exhausted every possible option we can to recycle the current moulding sand on site.

We don't have easy access to waste facilities that major cities enjoy, so once the exemption expires, we will be left with no other options, and it will have to be transported at significant cost to regulated landfill in Townsville, as it cannot be dumped locally."

"This will add hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of cost to the business, which is going to create a huge financial burden on the foundry."

Mr Vecchio added that if the business cannot continue, the effect on lnnisfail will be highly destructive and create a domino effect right throughout the region.

"All we are asking for is urgency, understanding and some empathy in working with us to amend the legislation to assist the business to keep our doors open and keep employing the local workforce."

Great Barrier Reef Gives Birth to Next Generation of Coral RESEARCHERS, tourism operators and Traditional Owners are poised to analyse the next generation of corals on the Great Barrier Reef after the start of the annual coral spawn was recorded last night (02 November 2023) on Moore Reef, 47km east of Cairns.

Billions of tiny pink balls exploded into the water as different species of soft corals and a handful of hard corals began the regeneration process, spawning for a few hours during the night. The sex cell bundles break open releasing sperm and eggs to bump into each other as they float on the Coral Sea currents and then settle on coral rubble to form baby corals.

Marine biologist Stuart Ireland has been filming the annual rebirth of the Great Barrier Reef since 1996 and the 2023 event is the tenth time that he has documented it from the Sunlover Reef Cruises pontoon at Moore Reef.

“The coral cover and diversity is very high at Moore Reef after the past six years of strong growth and the 2023 spawning reflects this. As in previous years we watched the soft corals start the spawning process and spent a few hours observing the bundles of sperm and eggs being released,” he said.

“We will dive on Moore Reef again after the sun goes down tonight and expect to see the even more spectacular phenomenon of the hard corals starting the process of regeneration on the Great Barrier Reef.”

Mr Ireland was joined by Cairns-Port Douglas Reef Hub Coordinator Dr Abbi Scott, a researcher at James Cook University’s Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research (TropWATER), who is working with tour operators to understand coral recruitment

after the spawning event.

Dr Scott said tiles were deployed across five reefs and the baby corals that grow on them would be analysed next year with the data available for coral larval dispersal models to better understand the connectivity of the reefs where the larvae originated.

“This research will build knowledge of the relative variation in coral recruitment at each reef studied and how it differs for each of those reefs,” she said.

“It will be useful to inform assisted coral recovery initiatives and to help operators manage their highvalue tourism sites.”

The Cairns-Port Douglas Reef Hub network is a grassroots community approach to reef health supported by Traditional Owners, scientists, tourism operators and the community who are deeply committed to a healthy and resilient Reef.

Funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, it brings together individuals and organisations that want to learn, share and collaborate to pilot new approaches for assisted coral reef recovery, protection and adaptation that deliver benefits for the local reefs and community in the face of climate change.

The coral recruitment study is just one of the many innovative coral rehabilitation and stewardship projects underway in the Cairns and Port Douglas region and has the strong support of the tourism industry.

Wavelength Reef Cruises owner and marine biologist John Edmondson helped to develop the recruitment research concept.

Dr Scott said Wavelength was one of five tourism operators involved in the project with tiles placed across five reefs by Down Under Cruise and Dive, Experience Co, Passions of Paradise, Quicksilver Group, Wavelength and not-for-profit organisation Reef Restoration Foundation which manages underwater coral nurseries at Moore Reef.

“Such a regional scale study across a tourism operator network provides invaluable data for the Cairns-Port Douglas region and is a potential model for other tourism hotspots as tourism and research become more entwined,” she said.

“The tiles will be retrieved in February and analysed in the TropWATER laboratory by the Hub network of tourism operators, non-government organisations and Traditional Owners.”

Great Barrier Reef Foundation Managing Director Anna Marsden said: “Right now, the Great Barrier Reef is teeming with new life.”

“The annual coral spawning is not only one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena on the planet, it provides us with an opportunity to fast-track worldleading research to safeguard its future from the impacts of climate change,” she said.

This project is run by the Cairns-Port Douglas Reef Hub and led by local partners Down Under Cruise and Dive, Experience Co, Passions of Paradise, Quicksilver, Reef Restoration Foundation and Wavelength. The Cairns-Port Douglas Reef Hub is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government's Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and is coordinated by TropWATER at James Cook University.

Taylors Beach Stinger Net has gone up GREG SEXTON, PRESIDENT- TAYLORS BEACH STINGER NET ASSOCIATION LAST Sunday, the Taylors Beach community joined forces to erect the stinger net swimming enclosure ready for the Christmas holiday season. This has been an annual event for the past 40 years or more, with the stinger net remaining in place until after the Easter holiday.

The Taylors Beach Stinger Net is a public facility for all in the Hinchinbrook Shire and visitors.

It is located at the southern end of Taylors Beach on John Dory Street. This facility is supported by the Hinchinbrook Shire Council, funded by individual contributions, and recently received a grant from the Gambling Benefit Fund to purchase a new net.

The net encloses an area of 25 metres by 50 metres with two sets of stairs to enter the swimming area.

The sloping sandy beach provides water depths up to 2 metres depending on the tide, with the headland of Forrest Beach opposite ensuring calm water in the net and shelter from the wind.

There is a shower at the net, and 100 metres away

Innisfail Ladies Bowls LAST Wednesday’s semi-finals of the Ladies Graded Triples proved to be a thrilling game.

After getting away to a serious lead in the first eight ends, the team of Eileen Hamann, Diana O’Brien and Margaret Johnston found themselves tied at 14 - 14, with the team of Maisie Smith, Ann Rule and Catrina Cook after 16 ends.

Then it was a nail-biting last five ends, with the lead changing at every end. Finally, Hamann’s team defeated Smith’s team by one shot on the last end and finished 17 - 16.

The final of the Graded Triples took place this week.

In a social game of pairs, Bev Anderson and Bev Bandiera convincingly defeated Helen Paterson and Carol Cash 27 - 13.

Sue Morrison, Jan Dunn and Dian Catelan defeated Dell Steve, Marilyn Allen and Vera Rowe 18 - 15 in a social game of triples.

In August, Innisfail Ladies Bowls Club members held their AGM and elected their 2023 - 2024 executive committee.

Helen Paterson was re-elected as President, Marilyn Allen is the new Vice President with Diana O’Brien (Secretary), Lyn Stevenson (Treasurer), Dell Steve (Games Director), Eileen Hamann and Ann Rule (Selectors), whilst Audrey Rackley is the Ladies’ Patroness.

Since the AGM in 2022, ladies have had a full year of social and competition events and preparation for the club’s centenary celebrations this year.

Towards the end of 2022, the club hosted the last Money Day, sponsored by Rothnies Pharmacy, Hearing Australia sponsored day, as well as Presentation Day and Christmas Goose.

Last December, Innisfail Ladies attended the Christmas Party and Christmas lunch at the Crown Hotel.

Innisfail Bowls Club’s centenary celebrations kicked off in January 2023 with a mixed bowls day and an official flag-raising ceremony.

Other events throughout 2023 included the Centenary Easter Day in April, whilst ladies took part in Division 2 pennants from May 26 - July 22.

Innisfail Bowls Club hosted a hugely successful Centenary Ladies Classic on June 28, which saw 16 teams on the green.

On July 9, Innisfail ladies catered for the Men’s Lightning Fours event, another successful event.

From July 24 - 28, Innisfail hosted the TFNQDLBA Champion of Champions and the previously postponed District Championship Pairs on October 17.

Over three days in mid-August, the club’s official centenary celebrations took place, which included a club group photo, plaque unveiling, time capsule burial, memorabilia display, afternoon tea, sold-out formal dinner, and club-selected triples.

How good was Aussie Cricket superstar Glen Maxwell last weekend, scoring a double century at the World Cup? To know how good his performance was, you had to have seen the highlights of where and how they managed to get out of that pickle.

Picture this: Shane Muriata, partnering with the cricketing great Jake Robertson, no wickets left, 200 hundred to get, then Shane gets out for a duck, but Jake scores the 200 and wins it for Tully in the Big Bash and takes all the glory, well, this was something like that but more awesome.

Glen Maxwell came in, Australia was down 7/90, needing over 200 runs to win the impossible and guess what, he does a Tom Cruise and completes Mission Impossible.

It was dead set, something that Disney couldn't have considered, although The Lion King comes close.

In the local Rugby League, it was great to see NRLW superstars Kimberly Hunt and Essay Banu back in the Cassowary Coast Region to present special awards at the Southern Zone Sports Award. The NRL clubs of the Parramatta Eels and the North Queensland franchise should be proud of how they were represented and carried their respective clubs because we all are proud of our home-grown talent who have made the big time.

On November 5, Innisfail Golf Club hosted Round 2 of FNQ Pennants, so thanks to everyone who helped do work on the course, clubhouse and bar, to put on a fantastic event for the visiting pennants teams.

All teams put in outstanding

performances to win each grade 4/1, and Innisfail Golf Club are current leaders in the team competition.

Tully and Cassowary Coast junior cricket teams registered wins MARIA GIRGENTI LAST Saturday, Tully Cricket held another terrific Blasters session at Kim Carroll Fields.

Tier 1 Crocodiles set the season's highest score with 240 (20) and defeated Cassowaries (186) by 56 runs.

Cassowaries batted first, and openers Blake Muzic and Declan Lizzio started well, making 7 and 12, respectively.

A second impressive innings by Casper Roissetter (42*) set the Taipans up for a nail-biting finish. With the Taipans in trouble, Roissetter and Spencer (14 runs) applied pressure and got within nine runs of snatching the win. However, Sekove Hart intervened and claimed Spencer's wicket to record a memorable win for Kookaburras. Nollie Uitenweerde's 46 not out* for Kookaburras and three wickets earned him Player of the Match.

Earlier, Taipans' bowlers restricted Kookaburras, with Gavin Singh (3 wickets) and Ayla Di Mauro (2).

Both Cassowary Coast Cyclones Tier 2 teams (Orange and Teal) played at Morrow Park, Tolga, against Atherton (Maroon and Gold).

Cyclones (Orange) backed up last week's win and amassed an impressive score of 7/231, which Atherton Maroon (5/104) were unable to run down.

Cyclones opted to bat first, and Riley Berge, who scored (51) is currently the fifth leading run-scorers for the competition, with 174 (average of nearly 35).

Rohan McDavitt scored (42) and Cyclones with a very competitive 6/168 (35). This score proved too much for Norths, who were bowled out for 52 in the 16th over. Aiden Getejanc's seam bowling again proved deadly.

Coaches Award: Brooke Johnston

MARIA GIRGENTI EIGHTEEN Tully Touch players did their association and region proud, representing the North Queensland Cyclones at the four-day National Youth Championships (NYC) at the Sunshine Coast from September 27 - 30.

This year’s NYC was the largest to date, with 121 teams participating and Queensland winning seven of the eight divisions.

The best teams from around Australia attended, and Tully Touch players/coaches made valuable contributions to their teams’ successes.

In April, Tully Touch players started this journey at the Junior State Cup North Carnival at Townsville and, since then, trained hard to enhance their skills and fitness.

Outstanding team results were achieved by the 14 Girls’ (Layla Jenkins, Kassidy Dore and Hannah Dryden) and 16 Girls’ teams (Brooke and Hayley Johnston and Ellie Jenkins), who both placed third in their age divisions.

Coaches Award: Hayley Johnston Players’ Player Award: Ellie Jenkins Sammy Patch gained selection to attend the NYC as a junior referee. Unfortunately, in preparation for the event, Sammy sustained an injury at a training camp but was still invited to tour and made valuable contributions from the sideline.

Maddie Crema returned to a North Queensland Cyclones coaching position with the 14 Girls, whilst Steven Morice and Fabien Tauli gave up their time, shared their touch football expertise, and joined the 12 Girls’ and 14 Boys’ teams as coaching staff this year.

A special mention to former Tully Touch players Alyssa and Giaan Williamson, who played for Victoria at the NYC, as it was fantastic to see the girls continuing their love of the game on a representative level.

to the coaches and all who contributed to the North Queensland Cyclones teams.

A special mention to Tully Touch players Brooke and Hayley Johnston for their selection in the Cowboys 16 Girls team, Layla Jenkins and Kassidy Dore (Cowboys 14 Girls), with Maddie Crema, one of the coaches, along with Innisfail Touch players Lily De Brincat, and Skye Barba who also earned selection in the Cowboys 16 Girls team.

Players selected in these Cowboys teams will attend the Q Youth Academy on the Gold Coast in February 2024.

The three-day intensive touch football training camp is for athletes aged 12 - 17, targeted at those looking to enhance their current skills and knowledge.

It includes agility and fitness testing, body management and injury prevention while gaining an elite introduction to what it takes to be at the top of your game and perform at the highest level.

It was an impressive achievement for the North Queensland Tropical Cyclones to rank so high in both age-divisions.

FISHING

NEWS with Tony Mossop LAST week's weather conditions did not allow reef fishermen to venture out to our main reef systems.

Coupled with the fin fish and the Spanish Mackerel closure in place, Mother Nature seems to be protecting the reef this year.

Even getting out to the islands would have meant an early start, then only being able to fish for a few hours before heading home.

Most fishermen opted to fish the rivers and sheltered bays instead, with quite good results.

Trevally, Grunter and Flathead, we're all eager to take baits in the open bays and chase down small plastic prawns and paddle tail lures.

Fishermen concentrated on red bream up in the rivers, with the barra closure in place until February.

Reports indicated big, healthy fish in good numbers being caught. This time of the year, the bigger red bream in the rivers swim out to the islands and then make their way out to our main reef systems; once mature enough, the females reproduce small fry that swim all the way back to the same river system their parents left from.

I have personally seen large numbers of red bream on this journey and, on many occasions, likened it to the great wildebeest migration in Africa.

As I get older and better understand what some species of fish go through to reproduce, I greatly appreciate them.

Last week, up in the freshwater rivers and streams, jungle perch were caught in good numbers, mainly on small prawn imitations.

As water levels continue to fall this time of the year, it makes it easier to access sections of the rivers and streams that aren't normally fished.

The weekend's forecast looks like 10 to 15 knots from the northeast; reef fishermen will be watching the weather closely, knowing the trout closure finished on Tuesday the 14th.

It Should be a great weekend to take the kids for a fish on the beach or in the river mouth with the high tide just after lunchtime.

River fishermen will probably target the early low tide Sunday morning, catching the first of the run, which should be the prime bite time.

I prefer the Sunday afternoon high with a few hours running out till dark.

Momentous success for Tully Touch Football teams at the National Youth Championships... page 18

Local horse competitor Lahni Madsen continued to ride her way to success in 2023 MARIA GIRGENTI THROUGHOUT 2023, eleven-year-old Lahni Madsen from Mourilyan continued to make an impression in horse sports, having achieved resounding success with her two horses, Lyrica and Diesel, in gymkhanas and other events across the region and Queensland.

Results: Ayr Showjumping and Jumping Equitation qualifier - March 2023 Day 1 - Jumping Equitation third, sixth and fourth overall.

Day 2 - Showjumping - only one rail down in six courses, but needs to find more speed.

Moondarga Interschool Gymkhana and Showjumping, Townsville - April 2023 Day 1 - Interschool Gymkhana - Lahni placed in all but one event. An overall first place for the Year 4 - 6 group.

Day 2 - Lahni rode exceptionally well on both Lyrica and Diesel in three events, with only one rail down all day.

Overall Group Champion for Saturday in the Gymkhana, Group Champion in the 60cm, and Overall Primary School Champion for the weekend.

Madsen performed well and picked up placings in all events on both Lyrica and Diesel for an Overall 12 Years and Under Champion with Lyrica.

Zone 18 Formal Gymkhana and Sporting Championships, Mareeba - October 2023 - On Day 1, Madsen finished first overall for her age group and second overall on Day 2.

At the Zone Championship dinner, Madsen placed third overall for 2023 in her age group and picked up the Col Thompson Memorial Trophy for Most Outstanding Showjumper of the Year in her final gymkhana for 2023.

Gordonvale Gymkhana - July 2023 Lahni won the Presentation and Rider Class, then Overall Aggregate, and High Point Visiting Rider.

Cairns Show - July 2023 Madsen’s team won Champion Junior Team in the Mounted Games and Best Presented Team.

Mossman Show - July 2023 A couple of placings in the jumps, followed up by winning all the sporting events and receiving Most Accomplished Girl Rider of the Show - Under 18 years.

Tully Show - July 2023 Friday - 3rd in 60cm jump and stacks of ribbons in the sporting events; however, unfortunately, rain cancelled Saturday’s events.
