Queensland to introduce nation-leading midwife ratios for mums and bubs MINISTER FOR HEALTH, MENTAL HEALTH AND AMBULANCE SERVICES AND MINISTER FOR WOMEN THE HONOURABLE SHANNON FENTIMAN THE Queenslad Government is introducing laws to introduce midwife-topatient ratios in Queensland maternity wards.

In an Australian first, babies will be counted as separate patients when they are in the same room as their parent.

A ratio of one midwife to every six patients, including babies, will be introduced to ensure safer care for mums and bubs.

Minimum midwife-to-patient ratios will be implemented in postnatal maternity wards at Queensland’s major hospitals.

The move will be made possible

by changes to the Health and Other Legislation Amendment Bill (No. 2) 2023, which is being introduced to Parliament this week.

Under the proposed laws, a newborn baby will be counted as a separate patient when they are staying in the same hospital room as their birth parent.

A minimum ratio of one midwife to every six patients will be introduced.

The change will help calculate midwife-to-patient ratios on maternity wards and ensure families are receiving the safest, highest-quality care possible.

In 2015, the Queensland Government lead the nation by introducing Australia’s first nurse-to-patient ratios in adult medical, surgical and mental health wards in public health facilities, as well as across Queensland Health’s 16 public residential aged care facilities.

“Counting babies as a separate patient to their parent will ensure our extraordinary midwives can provide safer, more comprehensive, and more compassionate care to families.

“Our existing nurse-to-patient ratios have been proven to be very effective.

“That’s why I’m so proud that we will be introducing a one-to-six ratio for midwives and their patients.

“This is something our midwives have been calling for for years, and I want to acknowledge the tireless advocacy of our incredible frontline health staff.”

Quotes attributable to Queensland Nurses and Midwives Union Secretary, Kate Veach: “Today’s announcement of legislation containing midwifery ratios of one midwife to three women and three babies, or a total of six individuals, on Queensland Health postnatal maternity wards is a huge win for Queensland.”

Etty Bay Surf Lifesaving Club members, Brigid Darveniza, Sean Edwards and Greg Cullen at Etty Bay had their final patrol of the season on Sunday, December 3.These members who volunteer their time to patrol the beach will take a well-earned break until March 2024. During this time, one lifeguard will be on patrol at Etty Bay. Brigid Darveniza stated she was inspired by the lifetime commitment and enriched life experiences of many members, including Frank Darveniza who passed away in 2006.The surf reel was made in his honour using red cedar from his property. “He truly lived the lifesaving motto of vigilance and dedicated service.”

Tully Carols by Candlelight 2023 SUE MAGERY – TULLY FAMILY CHURCH THE community gathered once again at the Tully Primary School and Cyclone Shelter to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, being together and the sounds of joyful singing of the birth of Jesus in a season that acknowledges him.

It's always lovely when the local community can come together even on a hot and humid Tully evening!

A big thank you to Teitzel's IGA for providing the Sausage sizzle and to the Baptist Church for cooking the sausages and getting them into the hands of the crowd! The Catholic ladies did a wonderful job making tea and coffee and serving the delicious cakes and other goodies donated by many others.

Margaret Hyytinen, Jannelle Simoes with a band of outstanding youth entertained the children with Christmas crafts and games. At the same time, the jumping castle and slide are always a hit with the kids.

With her cute little dog and

balloon creations, Lara the Clown is always engaging.

Rebecca Watson painted many happy little faces with Christmas art.

Our Christmas craft and goodies stall raised money, which will go towards School Chaplaincy.

Ice cream during the interval kept the servers busy, too!

The remarkable talents of the band, Sharon, Sara, Steve, Andy, and Deb, along with the enthusiastic singers in the choir, ensured the audience could sing along and get into

Tully RSL sub-branch’s generous donation to the El Arish RSL Memorial Hall committee MARIA GIRGENTI THE committee of El Arish Hall wanted to express their appreciation to Tully RSL sub-branch, especially Secretary Karl Adams, for their generous donation of $10,000 towards Stage 2 of their Cenotaph Refurbishment Project ‘From War Horse to Plough Horse’.

Stage two of the project includes two life-sized steel laser cut horses, one with a Light Horseman and the other with a farmer and plough, manufactured and installed by Tully Welding Works.

Installation of the blacksmith-made Rising Sun Sculpture in August 2020 was Stage 1 of the project, and Stage 3 will be the final landscaping and lighting.

IT is hard to focus on work as we continue to think about Christmas and having those few weeks off to spend time with just our friends and family.

Unfortunately, the approach of Christmas does not stop the need to continue working and ensuring that everything we need to accomplish is accomplished.

The Wet Tropic Times will be closed for three weeks this year—our last edition for 2023 will be on Thursday, December 21.

For us here at the Wet Tropic Times working on today’s edition there are still two more left and we still want to ensure we are producing quality.

Regarding your work, I am sure you are still looking to produce quality, so please don’t switch off and hurt yourself.

Things must change if working hard all year round results in a short time of fun with friends and family.

I am now already focusing on making 2024 a year that brings more fun and blessings to my family because I don’t want to limit enjoying life to once a year.

Maybe you are thinking about the same thing, so what can we do to ensure that 2024 is better?

Brainstorming: 1. What is a regular event that my family and friends can enjoy together? This may be an essential conversation to have.

2. How can I ensure it is a priority and not allow other things to precede it? This is a question to ask yourself because life will always throw obstacles your way, so is my family more important than my job, or ‘celebrity’ people or things I like to do by myself?

3. Budget for it. If there are costs involved with the activity you are thinking about then you need to make sure that they are factored in and managed by the person who is the most responsible with finances in you family and friendship circle.

Yes we can pray and discuss our issues with God, but deep down somewhere in there, there can be an issue we keep hidden, undisclosed, even from God. God wants to shine the light in these areas. Those areas that cause us great distress. The places where we keep our issues locked away.

Sure, there are many times in church you can go to the front for prayer and reach out to pastors as well. But that may differ from what is required (Yes, I encourage this if you feel you need to), but have you first gone to your secret place? The place where you are alone with God and cry out to Him. He will hear you.

I can testify of a time I was delivered through a dream with something God had made me aware of. I awoke with so much joy.

Hinchinbrook Way Ambassador Christmas Party, November Mega Movie Weekend Wrap Up and Christmas in Hinchinbrook

2023 Hinchinbrook Way Ambassador Christmas Party Council hosted the 2023 Hinchinbrook Way Ambassador Christmas Party on Tuesday 28 November 2023.

The event, which was held at the Royal Hotel, saw 52 Ambassadors and Council staff come together to celebrate the 2023 year.

Mayor Jayo, along with Cr Donna Marbelli, Cr Mary Brown and Cr Wally Skinner presented the Ambassadors with a certificate for their years of service and a gift to say thank you for their dedication to volunteering.

Council is grateful for the commitment shown by all 39 Ambassadors who volunteer at various areas in Council.

November Mega Movie Weekend Wrap Up November Mega Movie Weekend was hosted at the JL Kelly Theatre commencing Friday 17 November 2023 with 428 attendees.

The weekend was a hit with the residents. Six movies were featured with Five Nights at Freddy’s kicking off on Friday night. PAW PATROL, A Haunting in Venice and

Expend4bles on Saturday 18 November 2023 and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 and Killers of the Flower Moon on Sunday 19 November 2023.

BY MARIA GIRGENTI LAST month, Innisfail State College held their awards presentation for Years 10 - 12 at Johnstone Shire Hall, where students received recognition of prizes and bursaries, generously donated by individuals and businesses in the local community.

Michelle De Faveri - ISC Year 11 Most Outstanding Academic Student and recipient of Kateifides Accelerated Maths and Science Bursary.

Blake Wells, recipient of ISC Year 12 MSF Sugar Bursary Vocational.

Students received Academic Excellence medals, who achieved at least two Very High Achievements during the year, and nothing less than a High Achievement in their remaining subjects, whilst Subject prizes went to the highest achieving student in each subject.

Merit awards went to students who have consistently achieved Excellent or Very Good for Effort and Behaviour in every subject studied in 2023, whilst Academic Achievement Awards recognised a Very High level of achievement in any subject.

Students from the Diverse Learning Centre received awards in a variety of areas, including problem solving, participation, communication and skills development.

The Most Outstanding Graduate (Applied Subjects) and Year 12 Dux for 2023 sponsored by the Rangiah Family will take place at a special ceremony in February 2024.

$100,000 to Support Aussie Veterans BRAVERY TRUST A veteran fundraising appeal stretching across four Australian States has delivered more than $100,000 to provide urgent financial relief to veterans impacted by injury or illness.

Bravery Trek is a virtual distance challenge, meaning anyone can join anywhere by setting themselves a distance target during the Trek period, aligned to Veterans’ Health Week.

A highlight of this year’s Trek was the extraordinary effort of 2 runners to achieve 4 physical marathons in 4 states in 44 days.

Navy veteran Murray Bruce and running legend Singh Talwar commenced their extraordinary effort in Canberra September 7, where they designed and completed a marathon course incorporating all the State Capital avenues as a symbol of their ‘Bravery Trek’ uniting Australians to show support for all who serve in the Australian Defence Force. They were joined by a community of runners including sponsors, serving personnel, veterans, politicians and supporters for the final 10km.

Within the next 44 days, Murray and Singh ran the Sydney Marathon, Melbourne Marathon and ran their own 42.2km course across Brisbane starting at the 42 for 42 Afghanistan Memorial Garden adjacent to Suncorp Stadium and finishing at Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera. Joined by a support crew of runners, they visited the Gabba in Collingwood supporter gear to symbolise the challenges faced by some veterans after service.

“Military folk, when they are deployed overseas, they head into enemy territory. Sometimes when they come home, they might have the familiarity of home, but often there is still a sense of being a foreigner in their own country. We’re highlighting their bravery back home and their struggle reconnecting into their own communities,” said Murray.

“Veterans can feel disconnected from society when faced with financial struggles. For us, raising awareness of the challenges faced by these families and helping get support to where it is most needed is vital. We were privileged to see those connections being made and

get a sense of the benefits any support can bring.”

Mr Bruce is a Bravery Trust Ambassador and VicePresident at Leidos Australia, foundation partner and major sponsor of Bravery Trek. Bravery Trek is a major annual fundraising and awareness appeal held by Bravery Trust, to provide financial support to veterans and their families. The 2023 Trek has raised $103,858.

Bravery Trust CEO Belinda Wilson said Bravery Trek was more than a fundraiser. It united the veteran community and initiated important conversations about the values, ethos and challenges of service life.

“There is something special about giving to others and being around our volunteers who find such joy in giving,” Ms Wilson said.

“In addition to Murray and Singh’s journey along the whole east coast of Australia, we had an ex-Navy Commodore run 4 marathons in 43 hours as part of the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc! And a crew onboard ADV Cape Fourcroy cycle the Tour de France 3850km on stationary exercise bikes.

“I thank each and every participant for your contribution to Bravery Trek 2023, no matter how large or small. Every participant has shown their support and pride for the commitment made by our serving members and their families, “We all have an obligation, as Australians, to support those who serve our country for the unique sacrifices made.”

Ms Wilson said the funds raised would support veterans and their families when income was limited by injury or illness, adding that a small amount of money when provided at the most crucial time, can have a huge impact.

“We’re preventing homelessness – we are relieving that immediate pressure point for the family - and then our veteran-specific financial counsellors will work longer term with the family or the individual to create a pathway forward.

“We work with veterans and families to address the cause of their financial stress – it may be negotiating with banks to reduce debt, wipe debt, or to consolidate debt, and then our financial fitness coaches work with veterans on that longer term approach.

Corn, Zucchini and Chickpea Fritters Serves: 4 (makes 12) Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes 2 serves per portion Ingredients 400g chickpeas can, drained and rinsed ½ cup milk, reduced fat 2 eggs ¾ cup wholemeal flour, self-raising 1 large zucchini, grated with skin on 310g can corn kernels, drained and rinsed 2 tablespoons mint, chopped 3 spring onions, thinly sliced 3 tablespoons olive oil Method BLEND chickpeas in a food processor until roughly chopped.

WHISK milk and eggs in a small bowl. Place flour in another bowl and slowly add milk mixture, whisking until smooth.

STIR in chickpeas, zucchini, corn, mint and onion.

HEAT tablespoon of oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add ¼ cup of mixture to the pan and spread slightly with spatula. Repeat with rest of the mixture.

COOK patties for 2-3 minutes each side or until golden and cooked through.

OPTIONAL: serve with our tomato chutney recipe.

RURAL 16 | Thumbs up from visitors after Babinda Quarters gets a glow-up Wet Tropic Times

THE QUARTERS MONDAY 4 December 2023. After years of neglect, the glory days of Babinda’s historic nursing quarters have been returned with a new lease of life, transforming the Art Deco beauty into a popular guesthouse in the heart of nature’s playground.

Fresh from its latest, three-year restoration project, Babinda Quarters, which comprises eight artfully reprised guest and shared living rooms surrounded by tropical gardens, is open for business, and residents of Far North Queensland’s former sugar mill township couldn’t be happier.

Before succumbing to cancer in 2020, Margaret (Maggie) Perpetua Nelson held the keys to Babinda Quarters and, from the time she purchased it in 2014, oversaw the derelict building’s transition from nursing accommodation to enchanting guesthouse.

Maggie loved saving old Art Deco buildings and, over four decades, converted some of Far North Queensland’s best examples into successful holiday accommodation businesses, starting with the conversion of an old hospital into Cairns Backpackers Inn along with Charleston House in North Cairns and the iconic Floriana guesthouse on Cairns Esplanade. Her

passion stretched back to the seventies when she converted an old pink Art Deco garage on Sheridan Street (next to Rusty’s Market) into a furniture store.

In carrying on her mother’s tradition of bringing old buildings back to life, Maggie’s daughter, Kim Marsden, undertook the considered renovation of Babinda Quarters, reimagining it into a fresh iteration oozing creativity, character, and a good dose of quirk.

Kim said that in her time at the helm, she’s replaced five tiled bathrooms, repainted 16 of the 20 bedrooms, sanded and polished 13-bedroom floors and invested more than $ 1 million.

According to Kim, it is an ongoing project with plenty more to do with much of the costs associated with “under the bonnet expenses” involved in electrical and plumbing repairs.

“The next big challenge for me is painting the exterior, which is the first thing Mum did when she bought it years ago.”

Kim said her mother’s penchant for rescuing old buildings was matched only by her love of music and entertaining guests.

“This explains the Bernstein Baby Grand taking pride of place in Babinda Quarters’ main lounge – along with many musical instruments from drums

to guitars and the odd ukulele,” said Kim. In orchestrating the changes at Babinda Quarters, Kim said she aimed to create a guesthouse that offered an affordable and comfortable experience, much like staying in a friend's house.

“It has been a careful balancing act from embracing the building’s age and adding a contemporary level of comfort.

With crisp and colourful paintwork throughout, I have also renovated the bathrooms with contemporary fittings, albeit sympathetic to the Art Deco vernacular. A pale pink clawfoot bath and pale green tiles in the family room bathroom are a feature and case in point,” she said.

An artist herself, Kim has filled the rooms with stunning works by local artists, including pieces by Ed Koumans, Julie Poulson, Ricky Beresford, and ceramic artist Karen Charlebois Clay Designs.

With changes being applied gradually over the past three years, during which time the guesthouse continued to welcome guests, Kim’s creative flair and affinity for building restoration, along with her attentive brand of hospitality, has culminated in hundreds of rave reviews from visitors.

“While most visitors are looking for a comfortable overnight stay, that tropical oasis from which to explore and experience the magic of Babinda’s misty rainforest mountains, rainforest walks and cooling waterfalls, we also offer a delicious element of surprise.

“From writers and hikers to travelling musicians and crew, birthday celebrations and family reunions, the Quarters have been a hit with visitors and a boost to Babinda’s tourism.

“The fun of it is often in the reaction I receive from guests, and you never know who’ll come. While we also get a lot of truckies, scientists looking for bugs and ex-nurses, we have had some notable guests including NRL great Wally Lewis and friends and some Hollywood peeps,” she said.

Having the correct policy settings is vital if we are to attract the right investment and take advantage of this opportunity.

But, while this dramatic expansion does not need to be accomplished tomorrow, it does require that we begin the journey.

In fact, preliminary estimates suggest an additional 12 million tonnes of raw sugar would be required every year.

The State Government has already announced its desire to create a SAF industry in Queensland. The industry and airlines are also on board. And now the figures have shown us that the opportunity is enormous.

A new report, commissioned on behalf on Qantas and Airbus, has found that SAFs ‘will be the backbone of aviation decarbonisation,’ saying the technology is:

That is equivalent to a 300% increase in sugar production and would require a major expansion of the industry.

What we need now is solid action. It is time for all stakeholders to put their money where their mouth is and get on with making this bio-evolution a reality.

Congratulations to Innisfail Golf Club’s B-Grade pennants team (Joshua Jones, John Cavanah, Luke Peters, Colin Bidgood and Ian Saunderson), who progressed to the FNQ Golf Association finals on November 26, played at Babinda Golf Club and were crowned champions.

This Innisfail team created history as the first team to make the FNQGA pennants finals in 20 years.

Over the last few years, all grades have shown steady improvement. C-Grade made the semi-finals in 2021, A-Grade made the semi-finals the past two years, whilst B-Grade made the semi-finals and won their final in 2023.

Local motocross riders raced their way to success in 2023 MARIA GIRGENTI THROUGHOUT 2023, local motocross riders, continued to rip up the tracks in various events and achieved stacks of success.

MPE Central Queensland Motocross Series (CQMX) - race meets in Gladstone, Rockhampton, Blackwater, Yeppoon and Mackay between March and August.

Luke Weaver Series Champion - MX1 Pro Open and MX2 Pro Lites JRs Motorcycles Tropical North Queensland Motocross (TNQS) with race meets held in Proserpine, Mareeba, Charters Towers and Townsville.

Series Champion - MX1 Pro Open and MX2 Pro Lites.

AMA Queensland Motocross Championships - two rounds held in Gladstone and Coolum, Sunshine Coast This event had a stacked line-up and featured Australia’s best professional riders, Todd Waters, Dean Ferris, Joel Evans, and Kirk Gibbs.

Gladstone and Coolum - 11th overall Championship - 10th overall.

He was one of the only non-

factory riders to make the top 10, and one of the oldest riders.

Penrite ProMX Championship in Coolum - August 19 - 20.

There were around eight rounds as part of the Australian ProMx championship, however only Veterans and Ladies competed at the Coolum round.

2nd overall - Australian Veterans 30 - 39 years age class Queensland Veterans and Females Championship in Mackay September 23 - 24 1st overall - Veterans 30-35 years age class Tyler Sacchi Sunshine States MX Series (SSMX) - Due to a clash with SSMX and TNQ Series, Sacchi was only able to compete in the earlier rounds at Coolum and Toowoomba.

This series is one of the most competitive in Australia, featuring top riders from all over the country. Unfortunately, Sacchi crashed in both rounds he competed in.

This event was the Queensland Championship for the Veterans and Ladies but ran 65cc and 85cc support classes to allow Junior male riders to compete.

1st overall in the Mini Lites 85cc 9-12 years This is Sacchi’s last year competing in the Mini Lites 85cc 9-12 years class, as he now steps up to Mini Lites 85cc 12-16 years.

Round 1: 5th overall Round 2: 6th overall He also rode at the Sid Carucci Memorial in Mareeba in 65cc 7-Under 12 class, his first big event.

In 2023, Bazzacco started transitioning to the 85cc, which he put into practice at Ravenshoe and Tully Grass Track (non-competitive) events.

He will be one of the youngest riders the older riders on a bigger bike.

Travis Liddle from Pin Gin Hill competed in all rounds of the JRs Motorcycles Tropical North Queensland Motocross Series (TNQS) in the MX2 Support Class and came 5th overall.

Lucas Bazzacco from Innisfail competed in the Ravenshoe Club Championships in 65cc 10-Under 12 years class.

NEWS with Tony Mossop CONSISTENT 10 to 15-knot winds from the northeast did not do the reef fisherman any favours last week.

Three to four hours fishing first thing in the morning, then a dash home before the winds blow up, has been the standard practice.

Generally, when the north easterlies set in, it can make the fishing a little slow. And that was the case last week.

Reports that trout were hard to come by were commonplace; however, the deeper water fishermen caught both Nannygai and Red Emperor in good numbers and size.

Tuna and trevally were also in good numbers.

Throwing metal jigs at the schools nearly always bore the result of catching at least one fish.

A good 10K spin combo around 6 feet long is ideal for this type of work.

Back around the islands, reports of the odd Spanish mackerel being caught have come through; small doggie mackerel are also in good numbers. Grey mackerel, generally sized around 80 to 90 centimetres, were a norm, and they were being caught in good numbers.

Schools of tuna and trevally also have been reported around the islands, mainly Mac tuna with some long tails amongst them.

Good finger marks were also caught, although fishermen reported getting their fish past the sharks was near on impossible; the hotter the weather, the worse the sharks.

I personally fish for finger marks with an electromagnet attached to my main line, which will momentarily disorientate sharks, giving me enough time to get my fish up out of harm's way.

In the bays and rivers, fishermen have been reporting good fishing, with grunter and trevally continuing to be caught in numbers.

Big Golden and bludger trevally have also been

seen on the sandbars, working their way up the rivers feeding on yabby beds and along ledges.

These fish can be very aggressive feeders and eagerly chase anything they can catch. Some fishermen will take advantage of this and cast big surface poppers, or stick baits from a distance, often with great success.

Up in the rivers, red bream continued to be in good numbers, and we are seeing some bigger fish starting to be caught, both on bait and lures.

Lure fishermen reported smaller rigid bodies, such as the Jackson Jester and the Samaki Reddick, are currently working best.

This week's weather forecast is increasing into the weekend. Sheltered bays and rivers could be your best option; with an early morning high tide lure, fishermen will have an early start on the high, luring through to the lunchtime low.

Bait fishermen could be looking at that afternoon high tide around 6:00 pm, generally fishing towards the top of the tide, just on dark, should be the prime bite time. With plenty of time in the afternoon to

collect your fresh bait and get yourself.

Set on your favourite snag around 4 o'clock and fish into the dark.

Hopefully the Jacks will play the game for you and your extra effort will pay off. You will be amazed at how a quiet river system can come alive at nighttime.

Local lawn bowler, Louise Hoskins has now claimed gold and silver medal at the Australian Para-Nationals MARIA GIRGENTI SOUTH Johnstone lawn bowler, Louise Hoskins represented Queensland at the Australian Para- Nationals held at Warwick Bowling Club, Western Australia from October 6 - 9.

After winning silver in the Pairs last year, Louise Hoskins and Serena Bonnell went one better and returned home this year with gold in the Australian Para Women’s Open Pairs.

In the inaugural final, Hoskins and Bonnell started the game strongly and after five ends held a dominant 14-0 lead, before their opponents fought back and made Queensland work for their score.

The strong start paid off, as Queensland wrapped up the contest with three ends to spare.

In the Para Women’s Open Singles, gold medal pairs teammates, Louise Hoskins and Serena Bonnell then battled it out in the final.

In an extremely tight and see-sawing

game, Bonnell and Hoskins were 12 12, then 15 - 15 before Bonnell went on to snatch a thrilling 16 - 15 victory win and claimed gold, and Hoskins finished with silver.
