Rare Terns Sighted Nesting at Lucinda and Cassady Beach THE Little Tern, smallest and rarest of Hinchinbrook’s Terns, has returned to raise its young where they will be frequenting our beaches until the new year.

With a declining population of only around 1,200 adult Little Terns worldwide, the nesting colonies of these birds that regularly establish on the Lucinda Spit between October and Christmas are globally significant.

Most recently, Little Terns have been spotted at Cassady Beach.

The 45th Hinchinbrook Art Awards Exhibition submissions impress judges with their quality and variety DR BIANKA VIDONJA BALANZATEGUI AN overjoyed Jeanette Jones took out the prestigious Open Award in the 45th Hinchinbrook Art Awards Exhibition with her “Sunrise ‘A New Beginning.’”

Opening night of the exhibition on Friday, December 8, 2023 was an impressive event drawing a large appreciative crowd and 93 submissions from emerging and established artists.

Both the TYTO Regional Art Gallery and the conference space were used to host this year’s event, which originated in 1977 when the Queensland State Government asked all local authorities to donate a work of art to the new Parliament House in Brisbane. The competition held by the Hinchinbrook Shire Council to provide a work of art for Parliament House evolved into the Hinchinbrook Art Awards.

Today these awards provide a muchanticipated opportunity for emerging and established artists across various media to exhibit and be recognized for their work.

The judges were local councillor Donna Marbelli, renowned artist Dr Anneke Silver and Mark Bishop a local artist who creates metal sculptures.

Speaking on behalf of the judges, Dr

Silver emphasized the bravery it takes for artists to exhibit their work and the vulnerability felt in exposing their work to criticism and praise. She applauded each and every artist for submitting work to this exhibition. She said that she and her fellow judges were particularly impressed by the submissions by young artists in the Youth Award category. She also expressed a hope that in future exhibitions more Indigenous artists would be represented in the Indigenous Artist Award category.

Dr Silver emphasized that as there is an element of subjectivity in judging a work, it is inevitable that not everybody will view or appraise an artwork in the same way. In fact, an artwork that wins in this exhibition could be overlooked by another set of judges in a different exhibition and vice versa.

She encouraged viewers to vote for the People’s Choice Award. This category provides the opportunity for an artist who may not have taken out an award awarded by the judges to still have their work recognized by popular choice.

Dr Silver praised the high standard of the exhibited work which made judging

for category winners a very difficult task.

Take Notice and Don’t Disturb the Nesting Little Terns Continued from page 1...

LITTLE Terns nest on the sand above the high tide mark, with their tiny eggs camouflaged amongst the sand, timber, and shells. While this is a good strategy against natural predators, this means it is very easy for a vehicle or walker to accidentally crush their eggs or chicks.

Off leash dogs are a particular threat.

To avoid disturbing the nesting birds, please walk down on the harder sand, below the high tide mark. For safety reasons, Council urges residents to access our beach fronts with suitable 4-wheel drive recreational vehicles, within two hours either side of low tide, and travel on the firm sand between the waterline and the high tide mark. Do

not drive on dune foreshore vegetation.

If you happen to see adult Little Terns fly up from the sand, please watch your feet and leave the area quickly so they can get back to protecting their colony from predators.

It is recommended that you refrain from going near or disturbing the nesting Little Terns for the next few months and take notice of the temporary signs

that have been erected by volunteers who are trying to alert the public to the whereabouts of these nesting areas on the Lucinda Spit and Cassady Beach.

Little Terns forage where the river meets the ocean, diving vertically to catch tiny fish. They are white and grey with a black cap and yellow bill.

This is the same plumage as the common and familiar Crested Tern, which is in the Hinchinbrook area all year round and is about the size of a Silver Gull. Little Terns can be picked out by their small size, they are dwarfed by gulls and Crested Terns, and are about one-fifth of the weight.

Members and guests enjoyed a relaxing evening, beautifully prepared food from the team at Plenty Restaurant and Bar, sharing of Christmas experiences and gifts, as well as hearing from members and guests about their businesses and activities.

MARIA GIRGENTI LAST month, Back in Motion Chiropractic and Healthcare in Innisfail participated in their 17th annual Toys for Treatment Day. The chiropractors selected a day, November 23 and on this day if the patient chooses, they could purchase a gift to the value of their adjustment, with all toys donated to the Salvation Army Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal.

The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal aims to create a brighter Christmas for Australians experiencing hardship or crisis, through the delivery of gifts to those in need nationwide, including communities impacted by the cost of living.

Back in Motion Chiropractic especially wanted to thank the generosity of their clients, as most got into the spirit and participated in gift giving for the worthy cause.

Yanks Jetty Reinstatement of the Gangway Delayed

IMPORTANT notice for anyone planning to visit Yanks Jetty over the Christmas break.

Council advises that due to lead times for scheduling expert marine contractors, the reinstatement of the gangway linkage between Yanks Jetty and the pontoon will not be completed before the Christmas holiday period.

The gangway has been fully repaired and strengthened for some time now, and despite Council’s best efforts in trying to find alternative approaches to get the gangway reinstalled, the earliest the pontoon can be safely lifted into place is now early 2024.

Council advises that the Yanks Jetty Pontoon is currently open, safe to access and will remain open for use during the Christmas holiday period.

Boat owners are reminded to obey all signage on the facility and comply with Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s anchoring and mooring restrictions.

Lastly, it is always good practice whenever you are visiting beaches and islands in our Shire to pick up any trash and rubbish you come across. “Take home more than you brought with you”.

Safety first: Council will collect missed kerbside bin service CASSOWARY COAST REGIONAL COUNCIL A decision by Cassowary Coast Regional Council to suspend kerbside collection in Jasper’s approach was made with safety of community and workforce in mind as well as landfill conditions. With the Local Disaster Management Group giving the green light to recommence services from Thursday, additional bin collections this week should see all missed services collected.

The elevation of advice from the Cassowary Coast’s Local Disaster Management Group late on Monday to ‘Watch and Act’ triggered a safety review of services by Council, leading to the decision to interrupt kerbside bin collection services for two days.

The decision was made alongside the closure of waste transfer stations,

customer service outlets and libraries on Tuesday and Wednesday when advice to the community was to prepare for isolation due to warnings of storm surges and damaging winds. All services were returned to full operations following the ‘all clear’ on Thursday.

“If we’re asking the community to secure their homes with the understanding that all loose items can become potentially dangerous missiles in high wind events, it’s counter intuitive to then expect bins to be placed on kerbsides,” Mr Graffen explained.

With bin collections to recommence from Thursday once Council received the green light from the Local Disaster Management Group, additional services were scheduled to its kerbside bin collection for areas that were missed due to the cyclone closure.

All residents who missed a service were asked to place both wet and dry bins onto the kerb from 6am Thursday and leave them out until a Cleanaway truck was able to reach their street.

“The nature of a weather event such as this means we can’t be sure what will happen and when. The best decision we can make with the information at hand is to put lives first and prioritise service delivery once it’s safe to do so.

“We sincerely thank the community for their understanding.”

Lean not on your own understanding SARI RUSSO | BA SOCIAL WORK NOW that we are heading into Christmas, it reminds us of what we have yet to do successfully and the desire to make those New Year resolutions to ensure we do better next time.

It is funny how often we want to do something better but never feel strong enough to, and the only time we try to make a concerted effort is around Christmas.

This reminds me of a scripture written by Paul to the Roman Church, where he talks about wanting to do good but getting trapped by sin.

“For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.”

I now know that I need to make more informed decisions about my need for help from the Holy Spirit this Christmas.

It may not be the same for you. Still, for me, Christmas is about Jesus, drawing closer to him, and recognizing that I need help from him and that I can’t improve myself without him.

Innisfail State College celebrated sporting excellence MARIA GIRGENTI LAST month, Innisfail State College community celebrated a year of sporting excellence at their annual awards ceremony held at B-Block Auditorium.

ISC boasts a strong tradition of participation, successes and achievements in a range of sports including rugby league, athletics, touch football, rugby union, basketball, cross country, netball, swimming, soccer and inter-house sports.

In 2023, Fitzroy claimed the trifecta, crowned overall champions in inter-house athletics, cross country and swimming.

Sea Turtles Spotted Nesting on Our Beaches people come to the Hinchinbrook to experience.

Council, together with community members, have identified nesting locations this week with signage and barricading erected at Cassady Beach to help protect these sites from impacts of vehicles and unnecessary disturbances.

With evidence of irresponsible driving along our beaches, Council would like to remind people that misuse of our beaches not only crushes the nests of sea turtles and shorebirds, but it also destroys the vegetation that protects the dune from extreme weather and compacts the sand which promotes erosion.

HINCHINBROOK SHIRE COUNCIL IT is that time of year again, with Hinchinbrook privileged to have both Green and Flatback Turtles nesting frequently along our shorelines.

Between November and January, nesting Green and Flatback Turtles lay about 50 and 100 eggs per clutch respectively and may nest more than once per season. Hatching occurs approximately 12 weeks later (January to April), where the hatchlings migrate out to sea and hopefully return some 30 years later to breed themselves.

If you see a nesting turtle on the beach, or even evidence of their tracks from the night before, Council would greatly appreciate as much information as possible on the location to allow Officers to manage and monitor the site until it hatches.

Knowing where and how many turtles are nesting on our beaches is important for several reasons. It helps Council understand the relative importance of Hinchinbrook in the broader population dynamics of turtles across the region, Great Barrier Reef and worldwide. Also, confirmation of nesting sites adds significant weight and access to funding and investment opportunities of programs such as the Hinchinbrook

Telstra plan to upgrade the existing telecommunications facility comprising a 42m steel guyed mast at Scherger RAAF Base, Peninsula Development Road, Mission River, QLD 4874 (Lot 422 on RP859798) www.rfnsa.com.au/4874015 1. Telstra Limited (A.C.N 051 775 556) are currently upgrading existing mobile network facilities to allow for the introduction of 5G to Telstra’s network. As part of this network upgrade, Telstra propose the installation of NR850 (5G) technologies at the Mission River service area.

The proposed upgrade comprises of the removal of three (3) existing panel antennas, the installation of three (3) new panel antennas (each no more than 2.8m long) and the installation of associated ancillary equipment. All internal equipment will be housed within the existing equipment shelter located at the base of the facility.

3. Telstra regard the proposed installation as a Low-Impact Facility under the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 2018 based on the above description.

Bowls News Innisfail Ladies Bowls MARIA GIRGENTI

INNISFAIL Ladies Bowls held their Christmas Goodwill Day on December 5, where over 30 ladies from Tully, Silkwood, South Johnstone, Cairns and Mossman and Innisfail, gathered for the last time in 2023.

SPORT Club capped off its centenary celebrations with its annual Christmas Goose Club draw with 100 prizes donated by members, local individuals and businesses up for grabs.

The celebrations started at 4.30 pm where 24 bowlers enjoyed a game of 10 ends, followed by a barbeque dinner.

There was a high festive spirit, as 27 ladies took to the green dressed in their best Christmas attire.

All other ladies not in the winning teams received a special Innisfail Bowls Club centenary bowls cloth.

Margaret Johnston won the spider, Toni Buick from Tully won the lucky door, whilst Joan Atkinson was the lucky raffle winner of a plum pudding, made by club stalwart Eileen Bowden.

Money card winners: Eileen Bowden, Anna Della Bella and Margaret Johnston, whilst Marilyn Allen won the Best Dressed prize.

Ladies enjoyed a scrumptious afternoon tea and most walked away with a variety of prizes in the cent sale.

Runners up - Liz Backhouse, Betty Cochrane and Margaret Johnston.

Innisfail Ladies will resume bowls at the end of January 2024.

LAST Thursday, 32 bowlers braved extremely hot and humid conditions for an afternoon of social bowls.

New members and visitors are most welcome, with names to be in by 12.30 pm for a 1.00 pm start.

Cassowary Coast Cyclones junior and senior cricket teams’ weekly wrap MARIA GIRGENTI CASSOWARY Coast Cyclones Orange and Teal junior cricket teams are sporting brand new professional playing uniforms.

This would not have been possible without the generosity of sponsors, Opal, True North Copper, Soils First, Woodham Petroleum Services, Poppi Bros, Innisfail Tyre and Brake, Bronco Dino, Finlaysons Lawyers, PNQ and Bartle Frere Bananas.

A special mention to cricket mum, Jo Poppi, who along with others organised these uniforms.

On December 2- 3, Cassowary Coast Cyclones cricket teams came the closest to a clean sweep, with two losses by six runs (A-Grade - DLS Method) and with six balls remaining (James Hopes Cup Under 13 Teal).

Although heartbreaking, overall, it was an extremely positive weekend for the club with some standout performances.

Congratulations to Matthew Spataro, who batted well in the Jimmy Maher Cup

Under 18 competition and led his side to a victory over ladder leaders Barron.

Spataro then backed it up the next day, with an unbeaten knock in fourth grade in their win over Mulgrave.

A special mention to Brodie Masina and Shaun Riley who hit half centuries for their respective James Hopes Cup Under 13 teams, and Riley also bagged three wickets.

Innisfail Brothers’ Junior Rugby League awards presentation STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIA GIRGENTI INNISFAIL Brothers’ Junior Rugby League celebrated a successful 2023 season and individual on-field achievements at their awards presentation held on October 15 at Callendar Park.

Under 6 to Under 12 players received participation medals, photos and certificates, whilst individual players from Under 13 to 16 teams received trophies.

This year the club had strong participation with 248 juniors across all age groups with an increase in male and female player numbers.

Coaches - Under 6: Trent Mann; Under 7: Renee Provost; Under 8: Troy Cooper; Under 9: Scott Hayward; Under 10:

Michael Ely; Under 11: Colt Barba, Under 12 and 13: Ryan Daniel; Under 14: Ken Wilkey, Under 15: Leon Hallie, Brodie Clubb, Troy Cooper and Darren Sue San and Under 16: Brodie Clubb.

In the competitive age groups, Innisfail fielded teams from Under 13 to Under 16, as well as an Under 15 Girls’ team, with three out of the four teams making final appearances.

The Under 13 team won the FNQRL premiership after a win over Cairns Brothers, the Under 15 Girls team also won brought home the premiership trophy, with a victory over Tully.

Innisfail Under 16 team featured in the semi-finals and then knocked out by Cairns Brothers, Innisfail’s Under 15 team finished fourth and Under 14 in fifth.

Innisfail’s Under 8 team competed in the Dean Schifilliti Shield, which they won for commitment and sportsmanship, Under 9s participated in the Paul Bowman Challenge, whilst the Under 13s team won the Fastest Feet Relay trophy at the Nate Myles Cup in Gordonvale.

The committee received acknowledgment for their efforts throughout 2023, as well as coaching staff, managers, sports trainers, referees, parents, volunteers, sponsors and supporters.

FISHING

NEWS with Tony Mossop EARLY last week, reef fishermen could travel to our main reef systems; good coral trout and red-throat emperor were caught. Floating a ganged pilchard out the back while fishing resulted in some nice Spanish mackerel also being landed. Generally, the northeasterly would start blowing by mid-morning so that most boats would be home just after lunchtime.

Later in the week as the weather conditions deteriorated a couple of hours first thing in the morning was all fishermen could hope for around the islands.

A few good-sized Spanish and the odd grey mackerel where caught; schools of tuna were seen but proved very difficult to catch.

Generally, as the weather deteriorated the fishing slowed as well. Most old-time fishermen know that fish will feed very actively before a blow, but once the bad weather sets in fish can be near on impossible to catch.

In the bays and rivers, the fishing was a lot better.

River mouths continue to fish well, with grunter trevally and salmon being caught in good numbers.

Further up the river, red bream has also been caught in good numbers and size. Hot, humid conditions are the best time of the year to chase red bream.

Prawns of various sizes have also been in the river systems, not in great numbers. Still, any prawn this time of the year will have predatory fish not too far away.

In most cases, you will find fish if you can find a bank with prawns along it or a drain with prawns in it.

Lure fishermen are always on the lookout for jelly prawns. A jelly prawn is a juvenile prawn anywhere from 10 to 20mm long, and every fish in an estuary system will go out of their way to get a good feed of them.

One of the problems with chasing fish of any species that are feeding on jelly prawns is they will not eat anything else; fish seem to get fixated on prawns, and it doesn’t matter what you throw at them; they will not touch it.

Next week’s weather forecast depends entirely on what cyclone Jasper does, let’s hope there is no wind.

Crabbing this weekend could be a good option; with some fresh water, the crabs will go out to the river mouths and even onto the beachfront, looking for saltier water.

One or two well placed crab pots could get you an excellent feed of crabs.

With some weather forecasters indicating decreasing winds for the weekend, I expect to see plenty of fishermen out around the river mouths, fishing to the top of the midday high tide.

The 3-meter-high tide should hold the freshwater back enough to allow fish to feed comfortably around the top of the tide.

Then as the tide changes to run out the fish will go with the tide out into the saltier water.

Lure fisherman will probably be getting an early start Saturday or Sunday morning while there is little water around, concentrating on drains running into the river while fishing their way upstream with the big tide.

Always get an up-to-date forecast before planning your next trip.
