Spiritual Food with Jess

Army of God

WHETHER you know it or not, the day you gave your heart to the Lord, you became a member of his army. It is a spiritual army battling between good and evil.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:12 NIV

Therefore, put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

Ephesians 6:13 NIV

The church isn't an audience to be entertained; it is an army to be empowered. Just as it is important to minister to our flesh and physical needs, it is also essential to minister/and serve our spiritual needs. One should not be held to a higher degree than

the other; both are equally important.

How did we come to the place in the church of only wanting the church to minister to us that Jesus loves us and we are going to heaven?Whilethat is part of the story, and Yes, I am grateful for salvation and everything it gives us. But it's not the whole story; we need to realise God has given us much more than salvation alone. He has also given us power and authority over darkness so we can minister to others and share about salvation and his kingdom while we are here on earth.

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

2 Corinthians 10:4 NIV

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.

2 Corinthians 10:3 NIV

While it's difficult to see and know what's going on in the spirit at times, we can stand

firm in prayer and trust that God hears us and knows what's going on in all our situations. God has also given us Prophets and Seers.

A Prophet is a spokesperson or a messenger who proclaims a message on behalf of God.

Seers are visionary and have insight into the past, present, and future. They typically receive revelation by visions and dreams.

A seer in the words of Bob Jones:

You can see it with your eyes, but if your eyes are closed, you can still tell it's there. You will be able to "see" it with your ears. I will put it under your nose, and you will smell it. I can put it in your mouth, and you can taste it. You can "feel" it in your hands. A seer can move in all five senses.

We can rejoice knowing God has given us everything we need to fight in this war. We have the upper hand; Satan is defeated by theGirdblood!!!your sword on your side, you mighty one.Psalms 45:3NIV

LAST Thursday, the Year 12 cohort of from Innisfail State College swapped their school uniforms for smart suits and dresses of all distinctive styles and colours and celebrated with a formal event at the Innisfail Shire Hall.

This year's formal took place two months earlier and kept the same format as 2021 with students and teachers in attendance at the Shire Hall.

Photos of students captured in their formal attire with family and friends took place at picturesque locations, including Warrina Lakes, Paronella Park, Etty Bay, Mourilyan Harbour and Innisfail State College grounds, before taking an outdoor class photo of 118 Year

at along the covered walkway along the length of A block and cheered as students walked the

red-carpet.Attheend of the walkway, students then returned to their waiting vehicles, which included Mustangs, Buicks and a Jeep.

Students travelled in vintage shiny cars, trucks and 4WDs, as well as other classy modes

of transport and escorted in style to their formal venue.

A procession of 10 vehicles at a time departed from the College to the Shire Hall under the direction of local police who donated their time and maintained stations along the route to ensure safe and smooth traffic flow.

The vehicle procession left the carpark, along Flying Fish Point Road, over Geraldton Bridge, before turning left at the

hospital roundabout, then along the Esplanade to Innisfail Police Station, around the roundabout and right into Rankin Street, past Woolworths and Innisfail Post Office to the Shire Hall, where students walked the red carpet.

Cars and traffic finished on Rankin Street, as students alighted outside the Shire Hall and entered the venue for a ‘Starry Nights’ themed gala formal dinner.

Innisfail branch has raised close to $7,000 for Cancer Council Queensland

MARIA GIRGENTI

IN July, the Cancer Council Queensland Innisfail branch raised $820 from its Mini Relay for Life, which started at Fitzgerald Esplanade and went from bridge to bridge. Before the walk, all those in attendance observed a minute’s silence to reflect on lost loved ones and the importance of family/community support.

Twenty-one people participated in the walk, which started at Fitzgerald Esplanade and went from bridge to bridge and back along the scenic Johnstone River.

After the event, over 35 participants and volunteers enjoyed light refreshments at Jack Fossey Park.

Lydia Massa said she wanted to make a positive difference and help get closer to a cancer-free future.

She wanted to thank all the walkers and volunteers who assisted and contributed on the day to make the event a success and Radio 4KZ for promoting the event. The

Relay for Life is an important community event that brings together local communities to celebrate survivors, recognise the unsung heroes and their carers, and honour those who lost their cancer battle.

This event raises vital funds for life-saving research, prevention and support services for patients affected by cancer and their families.

Cancer Council Queensland’s mission is to reduce the burden of cancer on Queensland communities because, on average, one person in Queensland receives a cancer diagnosis every 20 minutes.

Every year, in the Far North Queensland region, around 1,739 people receive a cancer diagnosis, with

prostate, melanoma, female breast, bowel, and lung the most common types of cancers.

Around 545 people in Far North Queensland die from cancer every year.

Cancer patients in the Cassowary Coast can access free support and services, including accommodation and bus service to and from Marylyn Mayo Lodge in Cairns, access to turbans and wigs, telephone/face-toface counselling and a psychologist.

At this year’s Innisfail & District Show, the Innisfail branch ran a Guess the Weight of the Beast stall, which raised $580.

On August 25 - 26, for Daffodil Day, volunteers hit the streets of Innisfail. They raised a further $5,500 through donations and sales of fresh daffodils and merchandise.Thebranch thanked all the local businesses who support their cause, with a special mention to Nadine Picini of Cheryl-Lee Florist & Bridal for providing storage of their daffodils.

The group, with around 20 members, will run another lamington drive in October/November.

Innisfail Cancer Council held a Bridge-toBridge Mini Relay for Life in July which raised $820. Amy Brown, Megan Anderson and Ben Heath from Innisfail Seafood donated $200 from coffee sales to Innisfail Cancer Council volunteers Lyn Chiozzini and Lydia Massa (wearing yellow). Innisfail Cancer Council volunteers Kerry Jacobson and Bruna Juhas sold fresh daffodils and merchandise outside Jill’s Stationery for Daffodil Day.

Matters of the heart

YOU may have heard about going to the dark place to ensure you connect with God to let him steer you on your life journey and not just trust yourself. This is a fascinating journey, mainly when you are so used to making your own decisions.

Looking around us, we often see things we believe need to be done better. It is tough to place our faith in Christ when we think we know better than him.

I am so impressed when I meet a person who strongly connects with the holy spirit. A person who allows the Holy Spirit to guide them in their journey and is accomplishing things that only God can help them achieve.

But you must be willing to allow God to break off the things you mistakenly believe. Things that are stopping him from acting.

Our heart is often the place where this happens. Suppose our heart tells us that God never comes through for us, and he is looking at our heart’s belief, then we don’t have faith in him that will move mountains. We believe that he will never come through for us.

We need to be honest with God about our feelings, like the father of the boy who came to Jesus to heal him of a demon. When Jesus told the father that all things are possible for the ones who believe and trust, the man responded.

“...I do believe; help [me overcome] my unbelief” Mark 9:24 AMP.

This was a robust response as it helps people understand that being honest with Christ about any barriers will help him act on our behalf; we will witness his love of us and help heal our heart’s issues.Ishared

in my column a fortnight ago that David was chosen to be King because God investigated his heart and saw his love for him.

When you read through the journey of David, you will notice that though God anointed him as a teenager, it was a long journey through many trials and tribulations before he became King.

If you are a new believer in Christ, you may have had a fantastic experience feeling the Holy Spirit. I am sure David felt terrific after being anointed. However, after being anointed, David was still looking after the sheep and serving his older brothers, who missed out on being appointed.

If David didn’t have the heart and love for God that led him to be chosen in the first place, he would never have stayed the course and become King.

Suppose your journey with Christ is about what he can do for you and not a mutual, loving relationship with him. In that case, you will not see positive fruit from your relationship with Christ.

“I love You [fervently and devotedly], O Lord, my strength.” The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and the One who rescues me; My God, my rock and strength in whom I trust and take refuge; My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower—my stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies.

History of Innisfail Woodworkers

INNISFAIL WOODWORKERS

IN January 1997, Charlie Babagallo advertised in the local paper asking if anyone was interested in forming a woodworking group. A few people arranged to meet with the idea of starting a club, and a meeting was held on February 27, 1997, at Charlie's Home.

At this meeting, it was voted that Charlie Babagallo be appointed as the President, Wayne Story as the Secretary, and Barry Butler as the Treasurer. John Durso, Glen & Pam Garner, Roy Ovenden and Nick Gibbons were the first original members.Atthis point in time, they didn't meet at one particular place. Each time they met, it was at someone's house. After three years, and as the club grew in membership, it was decided there was a need to find a place the club could call its own. Charlie elected to join the show society so he could make an application to utilise some of their unused buildings.TheShow management agreed for the woodworkers to use the unutilised area as their Clubhouse and provided the key for this section of the showgrounds to the club. Charlie would be the voice of the Woodworkers at the Show meetings.Theclub

moved into the pavilion and built some benches and cupboards along the wall, and Bob Allison (President of the Show society) set the rent. The Show Society helped with timber, and the club members built the Clubhouse.

In 2006 Cyclone Larry hit Innisfail and hit hard. The shed the Woodworkers had been working in over the past ten years could not withstand the violence that Cyclone Larry

Thebrought.pavilion

roller doors were blown in, and all the machinery was water damaged. The damage

to the grounds was extensive, and many repairs were needed on all the showground buildings.

The army was billeted in the pavilions while the area was cleaned up. It took quite a long time before the woodworker’s club could regroup. Once they could get into the building, they took their machines apart. They did everything possible to fix or repair the equipment, but much of the machinery was lost to cyclone, Larry.

The buildings had to be rebuilt. The club put their machines into Joe Guerrara's and Paul Barbagallo's Sheds. In the meantime, they went back to having meetings at members' homes.

They needed a new shed, so they started getting quotes for a new shed. Quotes varied $23, 664.00 to $84,000.00. It was suggested that the woodworkers ask for help to build our present building. They had to work with the council as the showground is council land.

They applied for a Tropical Cyclone Appeal grant and were successful. Plans needed to be drawn for submission to the council, and everything needed to go through Pease Park management forItapproval.took

some time to get permission to get into the number 2 pavilion, where they had worked for some time.

They settled into the David Dodds Pavilion with the condition that they vacate the building for the show. The machines were cleaned and rust-proofed, and most were usable. So, they settled in again.

By now, they had a Drop saw, drill press, table saw, radial arm saw, Thicknesser, sanders and various hand tools. Plus some tables and

benches they had made.

In 2007 their lease was finalised, and the Clubhouse was almost ready. They were moving into a new building on June 2, 2007, and the Clubhouse was finished but not officially handed over.

The club was officially opened on September 16, 2007, and opened by Warren Pitt, member for Cairns.

Twenty-five years later, they are still going strong. They do need younger members now that their membership is aging, and young blood will keep our shed doors open. They held a Silver Anniversary Reunion on Saturday, September 17, fifteen years after the current shed was opened. They were blessed by the presence of three starting members, Nick Gibbons, Glen and Pam Garner, and two long-standing and life members, Vera Alberich and Barry Laffin. Cr Mark and Marsha Nolan also called in to wish the Club continued success.

Vessel Tracking Report tracks well overdue: Dametto

ON BEHALF OF NICK DAMETTO MP FOR HINCHINBROOK

IT’S been one blow after the other for the Queensland commercial fishing industry, with the Government indicating it would not support the Katter’s Australian Party’s country of origin seafood labelling bill, Minister Furner’s reduction of the Spanish Mackerel quotas and now

commercial fishers are being left in the dark as they await the overdue results of the vessel tracking postimplementation review (PIR).

As an action of the Sustainable Fisheries Strategy 2017-2027, the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) rolled out vessel tracking during 2019 and 2020 for all major commercial fisheries.1

DAF originally indicated the vessel tracking PIR would be released in early December 2021, which was then postponed on three separate occasions.

Now ten months after the vessel tracking working group was informed that the vessel tracking PIR would be released, Queensland’s commercial fishers are still awaiting the results.

KAP Deputy Leader and Hinchinbrook MP, Nick Dametto said the Palaszczuk Labor Government had made it blatantly obvious that they did not support Queensland’s commercial fishers.

“If the industry wasn’t hurting enough this week with Spanish Mackerel quotas being slashed, the Minister’s failure to give commercial fishers any kind of clarity when it comes to the long overdue results of the vessel tracking PIR is just another slap in the face,” Mr Dametto said.

“Commercial fishers throughout the state are fed up with the wall of silence put up by the Government, and given the financial impact imposed with the introduction of vessel tracking units, they deserve answers.”

Mr Dametto’s calls come after he received a lackluster response to his Question on Notice asked of Minister Furner2 last month, seeking clarification of when the PIR would be made publicly available, and what consultation the commercial fishing industry should expect post its release.

“Upon asking this question to the Minister, commercial fishers had already been waiting nine months for the results to be made public, now the only clarity the Minister has given is that the PIR is just another month overdue and commercial fishers are none the wiser on what the results will mean,” Mr Dametto said.

Queensland Seafood Industry Association CEO, Eric Perez said the commercial fishing industry needed clarity.“Commercial fishers have been patiently waiting for the PIR to be released, given it will provide clarification on the effectiveness of the vessel tracking and impacts of concern within the industry,” Mr Perez said.

“The cost of addressing the problems with vessel tracking should not be passed on to industry. The vessel tracking debacle is a product of fisheries mismanagement, another issue to add to the growing list of fails.”

Mr Dametto said local commercial fishers had raised concerns with the effectiveness and viability of vessel tracking units imposed on the industry.

“Fishers are telling me that many of the vessel

tracking units don’t work properly half the time and if it’s not connected, the whole trip is classified as illegal,” Mr Dametto said.

“We need the PIR to be released so there’s transparency around how effective these units have been, because right now it seems to be just another tool for the Department to utilise to impose more 2.1.infringements.”https://daf.engagementhub.com.au/vessel-tracking-review-engagement-portalhttps://documents.parliament.qld.gov.au/tableoffice/questionsanswers/2022/777-2022.pdf

Two Innisfail junior soccer players continue to kick goals in Newcastle

MARIA GIRGENTI

SINCE signing development deals earlier this year, Happy Venables, aged 13 and Zaviah Di Carlo, aged 15, from Innisfail continue making an impression in the Under 15 Newcastle Jets Academy.

Newcastle Jets had a 4-1 victory over NWS Spirit in the FNSW Boys’ Youth League Two Under 15 semifinal. They will play in the grand final this weekend.

Both boys gained selection for the Northern New South Wales Football Boys teams, with Zaviah in the Under 15 squad and Happy Venables in the Boys’ Under 14 squad to play in the National Youth Championships at C.ex International Stadium, Coffs Harbour, from September 26 - 30.

NYC is Football Australia’s premier national youth tournament, forming an essential part of the talent identification program and national team pathway.

Players’ selection followed a thorough program that included club training and match observations, assessments from the Talent Support Program coaching network, and participation in TSP tournaments and elite games.

The process of player identification, assessment and benchmarking took place supported by data captured via NNSWF’s Talent ID App, as well as conversations with premier club, regional member zone and Newcastle Jets Academy technical directors andForcoaches.thepast

three years, the Queensland farm boy’s goal has been to gain selection in the State squad and play against the best kids in Australia at the Nationals.

In 2021, Di Carlo was on a high after he gained selection in the Queensland Select team; however, this joy soon turned to devastation with the cancellation of the Nationals due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the success of making the Northern New

South Wales Football State squad after only living in Newcastle for six months is an impressive achievement, and he is looking forward to the challenge ahead.

Di Carlo is thrilled and incredibly proud to gain selection and compete in the Nationals.

It is fitting this year’s Nationals take place at Coffs Harbour, the birthplace of Di Carlo’s parents, as it makes his achievement even more special.

His grandparents still live in Coffs Harbour, along with his uncle, aunt and cousins, so for the first time, along with his parents, he will have a strong contingent of family on the sideline to watch him in action.

He will continue to put in the hard yards at training and keep developing his skills ahead of the grand final and National Youth Championships.

Since their selection, Venables received a devastating blow when he suffered an avulsion fracture and will miss the Nationals.

Whilst Venables is understandably devastated, he is working hard through his rehabilitation program and hopes to return to the field soon.

Both boys have qualified for NPL 1 with their Newcastle Jets Academy team, the best competition in Australia for their age group. After impressive seasons, they offered contract extensions.

Whilst this competition is challenging, they have both proven themselves worthy and will play against A-League teams like Sydney FC, Central Coast Mariners and Western Sydney Wanderers.

Cassowary Coast Cyclones won the A-grade competition after an exciting 6-wicket victory over Mulgrave Punjabi in the final. Local team, The Thunder, won the Under 13 competition with a 7-wicket win over Norths Townsville. Zaviah Di Carlo in action for Newcastle Jets Academy Under 15 Boys’ Youth team. OUR ideal boating conditions over last weekend allowed several larger boats to travel out wide and fish the scattered reefs and rubble patches along the edge of the continental shelf. Most boats managed mixed bags of Nannygai, Spangled Emperor and some quality Red emperor. Those fishing the deeper water around the 70 to 100-metre mark reported catches of Job Fish and the beautifully coloured Flame Snapper.

Trolling the contour lines was also successful with some quality Wahoo, Mahi Mahi and Yellow Fin Tuna. Good numbers of school-sized Spanish Mackerel were also caught by trolling the fringes of the outer reefs.

From the reports, it seems there was plenty of action on the main reefs as well, with good numbers of Coral Trout and Red Throat Emperor reported. I was concerned that the small run in the tides would make the fishing challenging. Most boats seemed to be happy with their catches; however, I did have some experienced fishermen tell me that they had struggled. I feel that the closer in reefs didn't fish as well as those out wide. Perhaps there was a decent ocean current running out wider.

It seems the spearfishermen had a ball with good numbers of Spanish Mackerel, Coral Trout, Tusk fish and Cray Fish.

The fishing in the rubble patches just inside the reef and in the shipping channel produced a mixed bag. Plenty of Nannygai were showing up on the sounder but getting them to bite was difficult. It seems the fishing was better of an evening. There were good numbers of school-sized Spanish Mackerel, and the Doggy Mackerel seemed to be still around in good numbers. The various wrecks also produced some big

GTs and CloserCobia.inshore around the islands, catches have mainly consisted of Grass Sweet Lip, Gold Spot Cod and a few nice Island Trout. Fingermark has been consistent all year. Some better-sized Grunters are starting to show around the coastal headlands and along the drop-offs in the Hinchinbrook channel.

I went for a quick troll for a Spanish Mackerel around Combe island on Saturday afternoon and caught 2 Spanish Mackerel around the 10 kg. mark, both fish took ribbonfish baits.

The fishing in the coastal creeks and estuaries was a little more challenging than the previous weekend due to the very small run in the tides. Some excellent fish were still caught, mainly Barra, Mangrove Jacks and Estuary Cod. As I write this column, I would expect the coastal creeks to really fire up on the making tides we are Althoughexperiencing.themud crabs are not around in huge numbers, they are still being caught, and I still consider it worthwhile to set up a few pots.

I am writing this report on Monday, so it is very early to predict the weather for this weekend. The current forecast is for light winds on Saturday, rising to 10 to 15knots on Sunday. Wouldn't it be great to have another glamorous weekend during the school holidays?

Either side of the early morning high tide looks fantastic for virtually all types of fishing, especially for Spanish Mackerel around the islands. Another option would be to fish for a Grunter in the coastal creeks or along the drop-offs in the Hinchinbrook Channel.

If you are land based, don't despair; these are ideal tides to fish along the Cardwell foreshore, where they have been catching some good Barra and some huge BlueTheSalmon.freshwater reaches of the Johnstone and Tully rivers will also be fishing well.

Good Fishing

Coconuts’ Outrigger Canoe Club host Round

4 - AOCRA NQ Zone Grand Prix regatta

PADDLERS from across North Queensland converged on Innisfail for an epic weekend of paddling on August 20 as part of the Coconuts’ Outrigger Canoe Club 25th anniversary celebrations and Round 4 of the AOCRA NQ Zone Grand Prix.

The last time the club hosted a regatta at Coconuts Beach was in 2018.

Paddlers from the Coral Sea, Mission Beach, The Dam Tinaroo, Cairns Beaches, Hekili, Whitsunday, Townsville, Shute Harbour and Sunset Bay clubs participated.

A new race format introduced for the 25th anniversary was two short and fast races of 2,500m, with one at the start of the day and another at the end, with the overall winner across all divisions decided by how closely they come to

their first time in the second race.

After a full day of racing, Cairns club Hekili’s Unlimited Open Men’s team won the event, only 22 seconds slower than their first time.

Those who paddled more than 25kms over the course of the day went into a draw for a cash prize with 45 paddlers in the
