But this effort is being hampered by mill reliability and workforce shortages in many districts.
important wildlife to be assessed. The process is there for a reason. Why should Mr Cronin be exempt”? said Ms Gallie. “What is Mr Cronin afraid of”?
The Mission Beach community says an important part of the development assessment process has been ignored.“We have every reason to question the process, particularly as former environment minister Peter Garrett saw fit to deny a development on Lot 66 in the same locality because of the impact it would have on the endangered cassowary,” said Ms Gallie.”If this development is allowed to go ahead, it will undermine Mr Garrett’s decision and the integrity of the whole Wongaling Creek cassowary habitat corridors system.
This can have a particularly devastating impact on small and medium-sized farmers, many of whom are already having to work second jobs off-farm just to make ends Recently, meet.wereleased a whole-of-industry roadmap that plots a course for the sugar industry to become a driving force of Queensland’s emerging bioeconomy.
We will continue to innovate and grow, all the while supporting communities right along the Queensland coastline. We need to evolve while supporting our very successful existing sugar production supply chain that is the backbone of our profitability.
We all have a part to play
The controversial development to build an aerodrome in what the community describes as the’ heart of their town’ has approval from the local and state governments but has so far not been assessed under federal environment law.
In a recent interview with Charlie McKillop, Mr Cronin told ABC radio Far North he has legal approval for the development. “The process is there for a reason,” Mr Cronin said, “The horse has bolted, and the gate is closed.”“Weare not satisfied with the process that has so far allowed this development to proceed,” said Mission Beach Cassowaries president Liz Gallie. “Shortcomings in local and state assessment processes have meant the legitimate concerns of the public have been totally ignored”.TheMission Beach community questioned the process from the outset when six Cassowary Coast councillors ignored public concerns voting 6-1 in favour of the development and against their representative, Councillor Trudy Tschui.

casting a wary eye to the horizon.
CANEGROWERS is determined that the sugarcane industry will continue to be a strong and vibrant industry into the future.

The community has sent an urgent appeal for the new federal environment minister the, Hon Tanya Plibersek, to use her power to call in the development for assessment under the EPBC Act.
Now reports of the imminent return of La Nina, and the resulting wetter than average spring, has growers
High sugar prices and a good cane crop are only two of the four essential ingredients required to have a successful cane crush and to realise the crop’s full potential.Reliable processing of cane and dry weather are also necessary, and unfortunately that is where we are encounteringWidespreadproblems.rainevents
There is virtually no chance these growers will get their crop fully harvested, which has a huge impact on their livelihoods, not only this year, but also in the years ahead.Even if the rain doesn’t eventuate, many districts will still be crushing late into December. This is far from ideal as the later it gets in the season, the more we see a decline in the cane’s sugar content.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that cane farmers might be rubbing they hands with glee, but in reality, cane growers up and down the coast are wringing their hands with worry.
Of course, as growers we can’t control the weather, all we can do is go as hard as possible for as long as possible and try to get as much cane off while the weather is dry.

federal government for assessment under the EPBC Act.Under the EPBC Act, a developer has an obligation to refer their proposal if it is likely to have an impact on a matter of national environmental significance (MNES) such as the cassowary.

The proposed development site is within the foraging range of cassowary habitat, contains a water source and contains a known cassowary corridor. These are all criteria in the Cassowary Significant Impact Guidelines used by a developer to self-assess proposals in order to fulfil their obligations under federal environment law.

QUEENSLAND’S sugarcane harvest is finally approaching the midway mark. The crop is large and healthy, and the world sugar price is high.
But for this goal to be realised we need to ensure the industry can crush not only the cane we now produce, but the additional cane that will be required to meet the demands of emerging industries.
THE Mission Beach community is calling for Mission Helicopters director Ray Cronin to fulfil his obligations by referring his Helicopter aerodrome development to the federal government for assessment.

(and, in some cases, magnesium) for successful sugar cane crop production. Once again, symptoms of Lime induced iron deficiency is temporary and should go away in a few weeks or after rain.
It doesn’t occur every year and is not usually a significant problem.
Using lime and other calcium-based products in the Wet Tropics is very important for managing soil acidity and maintaining adequate amounts of calcium

Symptoms are often visible for a few weeks only and usually disappear following rainfall.
Iron Chlorosis (deficiency) is temporary and often occurs when the crop cannot access the small amounts of iron it requires from the soil. Symptoms really stand out as the entire leaves or plants becoming bleached or chlorotic (pale yellow to white).
For any further information, call 0400586968 or 0429022702, and a special thanks goes to SRA’s Dr Dan Skojac, who is always happy to double-check information given out on sugarcane crop nutrition!

Iron deficiency is often made worse by dry conditions. It is commonly noticed on sandier textured sections of a paddock or in old stream beds. In these cases, the young ratoons can still temporarily dry out enough to exhibit iron chlorosis symptoms.
Wet Tropic Times | 11Friday, September 16, 2022 RURAL
1. Following high application rates of lime or a calcium-based product. Iron deficiency is often encountered in higher pH soils. It may be triggered by excessive phosphorus in the soil or an imbalance of metals like copper, molybdenum or manganese. Iron is more available in acidic soils (low pH), which is why iron chlorosis only occurs occasionally in Tully.
symptoms appear to be worse in winter, but this could be because of drier weather more than cold.
Yellowing of Cane
1. In drier soil conditions. As the young ratoons start regrowing after harvest, drier weather may restrict iron uptake from the soil. After a shower of rain, iron chlorosis symptoms usually disappear. This shouldn’t have been a problem in Tully lately, though! Sometimes
RECENTLY some incidences of young ratoon crops going yellow have been reported around the Tully district. One of the likely causes of this, for this time of year, is what we call “Iron Chlorosis”.
Treatment of this iron chlorosis is not recommended. However, foliar application of an iron chelate or iron sulphate solution can correct iron deficiency, but this is rarely needed.
It can also occur on sandy ridges within a paddock.
There are basically two main reasons why this temporary Iron Chlorosis can occur.

Ms Erakovic has a Bachelor Degree in Science and she also owned and operated two small businesses early in her career.
ABGC Chair Stephen Lowe welcomed the appointment and said he had no doubt Ms Erakovic was well equipped to advocate and represent industry, ensuring the long-term sustainability for all growers and the wider industry.

Ms Erakovic’s appointment follows a lengthy and thorough selection process, managed by a specialist recruitment firm. She has been with the ABGC for the past six years, in the role of Executive Officer.
MP for Hill Shane Knuth has urged the Federal Government to avoid repeating the near destruction of Queensland's Dairy Industry when it was deregulated 20 years ago.
"I call on the Federal Government to immediately intervene, assist our peanut farmers and stop the import of cheap peanut product into the country."
“The ABGC is in great shape and I’m looking forward to continuing to work with members, many of whom I already know, and staff to ensure the ABGC continues to deliver outcomes that will improve the sustainability and profitability of the banana industry well into the future,” she said.

Mr Knuth highlighted the similarities after reports that Australian-owned Bega had cut prices paid to Australian Farmers because of the availability of cheap imports."Before the Federal Government deregulated the dairy industry it provided a 50 per cent surplus of Milk to the state and had over 1500 dairy farms. In just over two decades since deregulation we lost over 1200 dairy farms and now produce a 50 per cent deficit in milk supply, which means we have to import milk from interstate and overseas," Mr Knuth said.
Ms Erakovic will succeed the position from CEO Jim Pekin, who has led the ABGC over the past 11 years, from 17 November 2022.

SOCIAL bowls on Thursday, September 8:
During the past week, ladies have enjoyed playing plenty of bowls with mixed social bowls on Saturday, AGM Bowls on Sunday, and Presidents’ Day at Silkwood on Tuesday.
It was beautiful to see the camaraderie between the teams on the green as the players improved the delivery of bowls to the jack and their knowledge of the game of bowls. By the end of the competition, some excellent bowling was taking place by everyone, including Primary and High School students.
Teams comprised local families, business friends, mates, and even a group who came together without knowing each other.
Innisfail Ladies Bowls

A BBQ was held before barefoot bowls commenced each Thursday night. 2 games of 5 ends were then played, amid much laughter and heaps of fun.
The Talentless Tigers (who actually did show a lot of talent) won the inaugural shield, as well as a Jack Attack travel mug for each member of the team.
Tully Bowls Club would like to thank all the teams who took part: Camilla Parker Bowls, The Bowling Stones, Bowled & Beautiful, Talentless Tigers, Young Guns, Great Bowls of Fire, Guacobowly & Milini Maulers.
This barefoot bowls competition will be held again in 2023.
After last Sunday's AGM, the club welcomed two new board members, Helen Paterson and Alf Siliato.
Joan & Bill won both their games as did Ken & George, making it a close result.
The team of Sergio Dalla Pozza, Peter Smith, Matt Aucello and Graham Kirkman were the day's winners.
Innisfail Men's Bowls
Ladies are looking forward to playing in the George Kotzas sponsored day in Innisfail on Saturday.

a crazy weekend of NRL action the first week of the playoffs has provided for us, but wait, there's more!!! Parramatta, in my opinion, blew their chances against the Penny Panthers. Look, the Chocolate Soldiers were good, but I feel Parra let them be as good as they were. The Panthers pretty much capitalised on the Eel's mistakes and took the game away from them.
Well,start.what

The Cowboys game was too close in memory of another golden point game I am trying to erase from my bad footy dreams. Still, you know what, I'll say some good things about them because I like Linda D. The human wrecking machine Jason Taulmalolo was unstoppable. It wasn't surprising seeing him score the game-defying try.
This game honestly had it all. Tully and Cairns Brothers should be proud of their efforts to put on such a show. With the skill level of both teams showcasing their talents, this lot certainly gave the crowd the afternoon of their lives. With temperatures soaring in the mid-80s (the same year I received an Oscar), the heat played a factor, with both the fish and Tigers heavily blowing during the game. As the game wore, the crafty little number nine Cohen Emmi twice busted the middle with lightning speed to score a double.
"DING dong, the witch is dead". With that final word, as the last nail was driven into the fish coffin on Grand Final day, the Tully Tigers under 16s side marched off to immortality by taking the trophy back home to the banks of the Banyan Creek.

Not to be outdone, Marly H was as strong and fast as Alex the Lion when he showed Superman-like strength to run over every player that stood in his way. Ezy Ivey could be mistaken for the Hulk, such as the monster running on the edge. Clever half Xavier Carlaw was a chip off the old block when he ran for over 100 metres. The game was in the balance for a very long time, then in the 77th minute, when we held a slight lead, nephew of a gun picked up a loose ball and ran faster than any Muriata before him.
It reminded them of his dad Ben, who could run faster than the wind back in his day. As the full-time siren sounded, hugs were given, and yahooing started, this Grand Final could easily go down as one for the ages, if not the best.
As special mentions go, and this one is well deserved, my congratulation to the Herbert River Crushers for winning the Townsville Grand Final against the Fish Eaters Brothers. There is one man who deserves a little bit of a wrap, and that is the great man Mitch Seri. After 19 seasons of A grade Rugby League in North Queensland, more than 300 games, Northern Pride and Townsville Blackhawks rep honours, Mitch sailed into the sunset with an A Grade medal worthy of the champion. To make the mountain harder to climb, the Crushers lost their front rower in the first tackle of the game; Seri got hurt and kept going ahead during the game. A cheeky farewell statement from long-time mate Colin Wilkie was that now they have a chance of winning a preseason game. As fairy tales go with Shrek and Fiona or Cinderella, Mitch Seri didn't receive the kiss from an Ogre or Prince Charming. Still, he went out a winner with his childhood club. That, my friends, are better than any Happy Ever after ending.

When golden point set in, well, Enter the Dragon, Val Holmes. With all the time in the world, he drilled a 45m field goal to send the Cows one game away from another GF. The only thing I will say about the Storm and the Raiders game is the opposition the Storms will play next week is the title of Alicia Keys' number one hit song, "No one, No one, No onnnne". The Roosters and Bunnies played another epic rival game when the game's oldest foes squared off for the Elimination game at the Football stadium. The unfortunate thing about this game is that no one will remember it for nay else than the ten million sin bins that took place. Hopefully, the players and officials can pick up their games for the finals and give us something better. At this point in time, my money is on the Raiders to win the big dance

contest, so strap yourselves in. It's about to get real.
If memory serves me correctly, and going by that, I mean the dodgy parts, this was undoubtedly the most extraordinary under-16s Grand Final that I have ever seen, notwithstanding the one I starred in way back when.
Grand Final was one of the games of the year, and the players deserve all the credit for this blockbuster of a game. Coach Will had them primed for the day; we would've gotten there if we had a little more time. However, it wasn't to be, and our boys fell short. I think we can all be proud of their efforts, not just on Grand Final Day, but the whole year where many staff, parents and supporters have come along for the ride to help them get there. It was a challenging game in tough conditions, and special mention will be given to all the boys who wore our Tigers jersey with pride. This game will be a stepping stone on their Rugby League journey in life, so don't rest yet, because this is the

The main reef shallows produced some nice Coral Trout and Red Throat Emperor for the bottom fishers. The spear fishers speared Coral Trout, Tuskers and Crayfish.

The rubble patches between the Shipping Channel and the main reefs were more hit and miss, with catches mainly consisting of Nannygai, Tea Leaf Trevally and the odd Cobia. It was interesting to note that good numbers of School Mackerel are still being caught. The sharks were a problem, with boats having to move away from schools of fish to avoid them.

Grunter catches are improving; however, at this stage, the coastal rubble patches and coastal rivers are not fishing as well for Grunter as they usually do at this time of year. I expect that the longer-than-usual run of cold weather this year has affected their migration; hopefully, we will see larger numbers now that water temperatures are rising.
At the time of writing this report (very early in the week), the forecast is for ideal boating conditions on Friday and for the winds to stay down right through the weekend. There is virtually no run in the tide during the morning; however, the incoming tide through the afternoon looks really good. I expect better fishing to be through this afternoon period and into the evening.
Conditions look good enough to head to the reef and beyond or to just head out to the islands for an evening fish. Get an up-to-date forecast before heading out. It has been a volatile year.

A friend from Taylor's beach managed to catch and release 3 Marlin and a Sailfish last Friday but reported that the action slowed considerably on Saturday and Sunday. He was fishing around the contour lines just inside the main reefs.
Good Fishing
Several boats also spent a few hours trolling the shelf. They found schools of Yellow Fin Tuna along with good numbers of Spanish Mackerel and the occasional Wahoo.Thedeep water holes and rubble patches between the main reefs also fished very well, with catches consisting mainly of Red Emperor, Nannygai and Spangled Emperor.

The large run in the tide we experienced last weekend affected the quality of the estuary fishing. Anglers found the Barra and Mangrove Jack numbers down, battling dirty water and an extreme tidal movement. Despite this, most boats did manage to catch one or 2 Barra. Conditions will improve this coming weekend, and I expect that the Barra and Mangrove Jacks will really come on the bite as the tides begin to make after the weekend neaps.

The Mackerel grounds just east of the northern end of Dunk Island have been a real surprise, with good numbers of both Spotted and School Mackerel being caught. This is very late in the season for these species to be around in those numbers, and it will be interesting to see if they are still there this weekend. I expect that the Schoolies will still be around; however, I would expect that the Spotted Mackerel will have started their journeySpanishsouth.Mackerel numbers have dropped a little around the Family Group of Islands from Mission Beach. ALTHOUGH the sea conditions were far from perfect, several larger boats headed out wide. They fished the drop-offs and rubble patches along the edge of the continental shelf. It seems from the reports that have come in that the fishing was red hot on Friday and dropped off over the weekend, and this was possibly due to the fact the full moon was on Saturday. Good numbers of Nannygai, Red Emperor and Jobfish were reported, with most boats happy with their catches.
