WETA Focus

For those of us who provide care for a loved one, the challenges and fulfillment of caregiving are deeply personal. But caregiving is also an urgent national issue a ecting every community and every family. That is why we are illuminating the critical role of caregivers and caregiving in our society via a new two-hour documentary — Caregiving — which premieres June 24 nationwide on PBS stations alongside a national initiative to engage Americans on this important topic. The Caregiving project is part of Well Beings, WETA’s multiplatform campaign addressing health needs in America, and it encapsulates all that public media is meant to do: explore complex, timely stories through compelling content and meaningful outreach.

Created through a partnership between WETA, Bradley Cooper and his production company Lea Pictures, and our longtime friends and collaborators at Ark Media, Caregiving is executive-produced by Bradley and inspired by his care for his own father. The film could not be more needed. Each of us has a caregiving story; and all of us will likely provide or need care at some point in our lives — perhaps even both. I encourage you to learn more about the project in this magazine and view the film.

A core mission of public media is to present opportunities for lifelong learning across many realms of inquiry, from matters of today to explorations of the past. This month, we are pleased to bring you the exciting new paleontology series Walking with Dinosaurs, a collaboration of BBC and PBS. The intriguing science and history programs are complemented with dinosaur-themed episodes of the series Nature and NOVA

Enjoy our June broadcasts, and thank you for your support of our many services to the public.

Walking with Dinosaurs

Mon-Wed, June 16-18, 8-10 p.m. on WETA PBS & WETA Metro; tune in or stream

An innovative new six-part science series from BBC and PBS, Walking with Dinosaurs presents an extraordinary journey back through time, bringing to life long-lost giants. The series, airing over three nights, reimagines a groundbreaking 1999 production that was the most-watched science program in Britain in the 20th century. Each episode of the 2025 series vividly tells the story of an individual dinosaur whose remains are currently being unearthed by the world’s leading paleontologists. The current golden age of paleontology is transforming understanding of dinosaurs; with the help of cutting-edge science, experts can now, more accurately than ever before, reveal how these prehistoric creatures lived, hunted, fought and died. As the dinosaur bones emerge from the ground, Walking with Dinosaurs brings these prehistoric stories to life — with dazzling state-of-the-art visual e ects — based on the latest evidence.

Actor Bertie Carvel (The Crown) narrates the series, which presents a range of spectacular dinosaur species in prehistoric landscapes. These include a Spinosaurus — the largest carnivorous dinosaur to walk the earth — roaming the rivers of ancient Morocco; a youthful Triceratops battling a ravenous T. rex in North America; and a lonely giant Lusotitan risking it all for love in what is now Portugal. Episodes repeat Sunday, June 22 on WETA PBS.

Attend a local Walking with Dinosaurs screening and panel discussion, Tuesday, June 3, 6:45-8:30 p.m. at Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Panelists include museum director Kirk Johnson and paleontologists featured in the series. RSVP/tickets are required; visit naturalhistory.si.edu/events

In tandem with the new series Walking with Dinosaurs, WETA reprises dinosaur specials featuring iconic naturalist and film presenter Sir David Attenborough and paleontology themes. In Nature: Museum Alive with David Attenborough (June 16, 10 p.m.), Attenborough explores London’s Natural History Museum and via advanced CGI meets extraordinary creatures from the past. In Nature: Attenborough and the Jurassic Sea Monster (June 17, 10 p.m.), Sir David spotlights a once-in-a-lifetime discovery: the fossil of a giant Pliosaur, the largest Jurassic predator ever known. A team of forensic experts excavates the skull and unlocks clues about the life of this sea beast. Then, NOVA: Alaskan Dinosaurs (June 18, 10 p.m.) follows as a team of paleontologists discovers that dinosaurs thrived in the wintery Arctic Circle. Attenborough is also in the spotlight in two other reprised Nature specials this month. Attenborough’s Wonder of Song and Attenborough’s Life Journey air Wednesday, June 11 on WETA PBS.

New documentary airs Tuesday, June 24 at 9 p.m. on WETA PBS & WETA Metro, and on PBS stations nationwide; tune in or stream. The film is a production of Lea Pictures and WETA, in association with Ark Media.

Anew two-hour film executive-produced by Bradley Cooper and created in partnership with WETA highlights the challenges and triumphs of caregiving in America. The documentary Caregiving centers on the personal experiences of caregivers providing for loved ones — their stories are interwoven with the history of caregiving in the United States and the context of cultural and economic conditions in the U.S. that have led to a care system tipping into crisis.

According to recent studies, in addition to 5 million paid caregivers nationally, it is estimated that between 53 million to 105.6 million U.S. adults provide unpaid caregiving for ill, aging or disabled family members and friends. In addition, an estimated 5.4 million children and adolescents in America are direct caregivers. Caregiving examines the historical and contemporary e orts to address this often unrecognized and rapidly increasing need. The film is a production of Cooper’s production company — Lea Pictures — and WETA, in association with Ark Media. Chris Durrance of Ark Media directed the film.

enough that I was able to be there for my Dad. And I certainly benefited from the help we also got from others. Caregivers are heroic people. It is my hope that Caregiving will provide a rmation and support for those who do this profoundly meaningful and increasingly vital work.”

Award-winning actress Uzo Aduba narrates the film, bringing her own experience as a caregiver for her mother to the project. Caregiving spotlights six family and professional caregivers across the U.S. as they share the realities associated with providing care full-time and the extraordinary moments, including joy, that are part of the care relationship. In the documentary, these stories unfold alongside an examination of the creation and evolution of the care system; the social dynamics that shape our approach to caregiving today — and future possibilities. Also spotlighted are the interpersonal and economic pressures faced by caregivers.

A Personal Inspiration

“The caregiving experience I had with my father inspired this documentary. During his battle with lung cancer, I came face to face with the overwhelming realities of taking care of a loved one,” said Cooper, actor, producer, director and caregiver. “I was lucky

Interwoven in the film is the history of America’s social safety net, including the work of Frances Perkins (top right), President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Secretary of Labor (1933-1945) who led the creation of the Social Security Act in response to the Great Depression. The documentary also explores the evolution of caregiving through the decades, including, for example, how the need to care for veterans intensified caregiving demands.

The film was inspired by Bradley Cooper’s experience of caregiving for his father, Charles, who battled cancer.

WETA’s Well Beings Campaign

Caregiving is part of Well Beings, the multiplatform campaign from WETA that launched in 2020 to address critical health needs in America through original broadcast and digital content, civic engagement campaigns, and impactful local events. The Caregiving national outreach, education and engagement campaign — resulting from a large network of partner organizations and public media stations — includes in-person and virtual events and dissemination of resource guides for communities around the country.

The public can join the conversation by using #WellBeings and #CaregivingPBS, visiting wellbeings.org, or following @WellBeingsOrg on social media. Cooper invites the public to share personal reflections, photos, videos and stories of caregiving via #ShareYourCaregivingStory on social media or the We Are Well Beings Storywall at wellbeings.org/share-your-story.

Additional Content

The project also includes 18 short films from the Caregiving team that examine current caregiving experiences, programs and perspectives — available at wellbeings.org and the Well Beings YouTube Channel. For children, Fred Rogers Productions is collaborating to create developmentally appropriate content that will debut this fall in its series on PBS Kids.

Host Joseph Gidjunis, wanting to be present for his son, embarks on a journey across the USA and Australia to discover what that means for him and his family. House Music: A Cultural Revolution

Saturday, June 28 at 7 p.m. on WETA World

Chicago has long been known for its diverse music genres and, infamously, as the city where disco met its demise. But from the ashes of disco rose another groundbreaking musical form: house music. This music emerged in the early 1980s in Chicago’s underground Black and gay clubs, where it was played by producers and DJs such as Frankie Knuckles, who welcomed the marginalized into these safe spaces. To mark the 40th anniversary of the genre’s creation, this film celebrates the innovative and catchy electronic dance music that continues to inspire prominent artists today, including Charli XCX, Peggy Gou, Beyoncé, and Fisher.

Wolf Trap Opera on Opera Matinee

Saturdays, June 14 & 21 at 1 p.m. on

UWETA Classical

pon the conclusion of the Metropolitan Opera broadcast season on June 7 (with Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades), WETA Classical program Opera Matinee showcases two productions from Wolf Trap Opera’s 2024 summer season at The Barns. Wolf Trap Opera is a summer residency program of Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, designed to give emerging professional singers important experience and career development. WTO selects its artists from among the best classical vocalists in the country and places them in repertoire that showcases their talent.

Mozart’s beloved Così fan tutte starts the o erings on Saturday, June 14. The title refers to the fickle nature of love. In this lighthearted tale, two men test the fidelity of their fiancées, which of course involves trickery and disguises. The work is one of Mozart’s most popular, owing to a feast of gorgeous melodies and an abundance of sparkling ensembles that the composer perfected through his years of writing instrumental chamber music. Mozart created Così in a two-month period in 1790 — a year prior to his untimely death — hoping for success at the box o ce to ease his financial di culties. For its libretto, he turned to Lorenzo Da Ponte; the two had collaborated previously on two of Mozart’s other Italian masterpieces, Don Giovanni and Le nozze di Figaro. Conductor Christine Brandes led this performance.

The following Saturday, June 21, Opera Matinee features Silent Night by composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell. Puts’s first opera, commissioned by the Minnesota Opera and premiered there in 2011, is based on a 1914 Christmas Eve truce during World War I. On a Belgian battlefield, enemy combatants observed peace for one day in honor of Christmas. In this setting, Scottish, French and German soldiers endeavor to bring holiday cheer and fellowship to their lives for a few precious hours; with heartbreaking tenderness, they struggle to maintain human connections.
