Christmas Messages Series

Everything changed when Jesus came into the world. When God walked among us, He changed the hearts, lives and eternal destinies of people. That first Christmas day was “Inauguration Day,” the day of new beginnings when forgiveness became freedom, humility became a virtue, and compassion became universal. Because Jesus came, down through the centuries education became more accessible and women and children were lifted up. Experience the wonder of all that was envisioned that first “Inauguration Day.”

Kids Birth Announcements We love celebrating the birth and adoption of kids at Westwood. To share your joyous news in Volume One, please contact Jane. Contact: Jane Pears, 952.224.7425, jane.pears@westwoodcc.org

A Christmas Memory As I reflect on Christmas this year, I can’t help but think “family.” After all, the very reason we celebrate Christmas is because of the little family of three that God created when He came to Earth in the form of a baby, born to Mary and Joseph–ordinary parents with an extraordinary calling–to raise the Son of God, who would save the world from sin. Talk about pressure to parent well! When I think about my family, my heart sings! Christmas with my husband, Gary, and kids, Bren, Kellen and Krin is always truly special! A day of serving together at Westwood’s Christmas Eve Family Services is capped off by a simple meal of Grandma Mc’s famous Ski Soup, a shared reading of the Christmas story from the book of Luke, and then it’s on to opening up Christmas jammies and presents! This year will be like no other, as both Kellen and Krin got married this summer, so Allison and Trevor are added to our family tree! Another family I am immensely blessed to be a part of is our Westwood Kids’ Ministries Team: Teri Braun, Jane Pears, Randi Mitchell, Vicki Stahlke, Eric Theisen, Krista Petersen, Katie Rosenow, Kelli Hollerich, Stanton Petersen, Sophia Hedberg, Kim Kriegel, our Child Care Team and over 200 incredible children’s leaders! No one cares more for kids and families than this crazy-wonderful crew I love so much! Yep, family matters! So, from my “families” to yours, we wish you the most Blessed Christmas Ever!

Child Dedication Orientation Class Sunday, December 28, 9:45–10:45am Prairie Room Babies bring so much joy to the life of a family and, whether through birth or adoption, the arrival of a little one is certainly cause to celebrate! Here at Westwood, we love to take the opportunity in Worship Services to welcome, pray for and offer thanks to God for the life of a child through Child Dedication. Parents who are dedicating children for the first time at Westwood are strongly encouraged to attend this one-time informational class that helps explains what Child Dedication is in our setting. The class is held monthly. Contact: Jane Pears, 952-224-7425, jane.pears@westwoodcc.org

Students Sundays Xchange (grades 6–8) Sundays, 11:10am–12:15pm Room A112 A Christmas Memory Growing up, going to get the Christmas tree was an event in our house. Mom would send Dad and kids out to the farm nearby. I wanted the first tree we saw as the sooner we could pick one, the sooner I could be warm again. Even in college, we snuck a Christmas tree into our dorm room. Later, I bought the smallest tree on the lot and stuffed it in my little car to adorn my apartment. The tree represented to me that the season was upon us, that Christmas joy would fill our home & hearts. The manger may not have had a pine tree, but I still associate a green tree as a symbol for what transforms my heart every year. Last year was a memorable Christmas for me. Our tree didn’t come the usual way. We got it in the leftover lot for $5 on December 26. It was a symbol of what I had been feeling all month long, and reminded me that the joy of Christmas is available to me any day of the year.

A Christmas Memory Christmas brings two thoughts to my mind, family and food. My Grandmother, Signa Bjorklund Nelson was born on Christmas Eve in 1897 and so Christmas included family celebrations and Swedish food. Grandma’s birthday included her favorite Swedish dishes: scalloped corn, potato soup, lefse, lingonberries, potato sausage, and Ostkaka (Swedish Cheese Cake). The celebrations were wonderful but I remember how much I enjoyed the preparation as well. All the dishes were made from scratch and included hours of work that involved the whole family. Every year my father would attach a large meat grinder to the tile countertop to process the three meats, potatoes, onions, and spices that were forced into a casing to make the sausage. I can see it and smell it to this day. Grandma died in 1994, at the age of 98, one year before we moved to Minnesota from California. To our surprise we found Swedish Potato Sausage in the meat department of the Chanhassen Festival our first Christmas in Minnesota! I immediately called my Dad to share my discovery. I remember Grandma Signa every Christmas through our Swedish meal and a cup of black coffee sipped from her china. For me Christmas is the story of the gift of God’s love, and sharing that love with those closest to me. Christmas is family time, and food for my soul.

A Christmas Memory Christmas has always been a favorite holiday for me because being with family is important. As a child, I remember getting together with our large extended family at my grandmother’s home on Christmas Eve. Growing up with strong immigrant German heritage, it was a tradition to read the Christmas story and spend time in prayer. Then the children were to share a poem, verse or musical selection that reflected the meaning of Christmas. Sharing something we had prepared in advance was the ‘gift’ we gave to the extended family. Being a part of the ‘family program’ was tradition. I recall memorizing German poems and reciting them with great anticipation for the ‘gift exchange’ to come. Frankly, I have vague memories resembling the Von Trapp Family from the Sound of Music!

Women’s Bible Studies See Bible Studies on page 23

In raising our three children, we kept some of the Christmas traditions with the reading of Luke 2 and sharing reflections of the year gone by. We’d close in a prayer of gratitude before opening gifts. As our family expands we’re experiencing the ‘gift’ of grandchildren and the fresh excitement they bring! This Christmas there’s no need to memorize or perform, since no program is required. We’ll gather with family and loved ones to enjoy the gift of one another and we’ll marvel at the priceless gift of the baby in the manger, for God so loved the world!

Still, what constitutes injustice can be vague or abstract. Often people think more in terms of feeding and clothing people–acts of compassion. And while those are important

•Book discussion groups will be formed in December and January for those who want to go deeper in this subject area •Alexia Salvatierra returns January 31 to lead us in part 2 of the Biblical Justice workshop on how to advocate for causes at both the local and national level

Journey to Justice by Chaz Nichols, Director of Missions & Adult Ministries

“WHAT BREAKS YOUR HEART?” Asked in her quiet, unassuming voice, it was a powerful way for Alexia Salvatierra to open up Westwood’s first seminar on Biblical Justice. With that simple question, Westwood began its journey to discover what breaks God’s heart concerning the injustices in the world along with how, and in what ways, we should respond to those injustices. At the Biblical Justice Seminar, World Vision, our ministry partner, gave each participant a Poverty and Justice Bible. This Bible highlights in orange every verse related to poverty and justice–and there are more than 2,000 orange highlights! A simple scan quickly points out one thing: justice for everyone is incredibly important to God. He is profoundly concerned about the injustices of the world–and He looks to His people, to us, to do something about them. His call from Isaiah and many other scriptures is to seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, and plead the cause of the widow. His concern about injustice in the world is why He is so passionate about blessing those who share His heart in this area. In Isaiah 58:10-11, God opens His heart to us: “If you…satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” That’s an amazing promise.

•The annual Westwood Food Pack on February 28 will include a Vision and Mission conference focused on justice

ministries, the International Justice Mission (IJM), another Westwood partner, defines injustice as “what happens when someone uses their power to take from someone else the good things God intended them to have–their life, their liberty, their dignity or the fruit of their love or their labor.” The extraordinary thing about God’s plan for ending injustice is that it not only includes us…it is only us. As Gary Haugen, CEO and president of IJM said, “The church is God’s plan for ending injustice in the world…and God doesn’t have another plan.” Really? If that is true, what do we at Westwood need to be about? To further quote Haugen, “God’s call isn’t to feel bad about injustice – but to do justice!” And it is this “doing of justice” that we are pursuing, not as an act of The extraordinary proving our goodness to thing about God’s God, but in plan for ending response to injustice is that it what God not only includes has already given us. us…it is only us. The Biblical Justice Seminar in November began our journey as a church, but there are many more opportunities for learning and engagement over the next few months:

Westwood is partnering with the International Justice Mission to help end child slavery in the fishing industry in Ghana. The newly formed Justice Ministry Team is looking for those who have a heart for justice issues to join the team and work with partner organizations on solving injustices both locally and globally. Our goal is not to be a church who simply feels bad about injustices…but to do justice in the world! Jim Martin says, “The call to the work of justice is therefore not God sending his church out to a place where God cannot be found. Rather, God is inviting us into the place where he is already at work...the call to fight against injustice is the call to intimacy with God…and to deep discipleship.” Come join us in Westwood’s journey to justice. Attend all three Sunday services in January, join a reading group, attend a workshop, work with Westwood to do justice.

•A generous portion of the annual Christmas Eve Offering will go to justice causes around the world •Pastor Joel wil begin a justice-focused message series in January, ending with a sermon given by Jim Martin, Vice President of the International Justice Mission

Our White Envelope Christmas Tradtion LIKE MOST TRADITIONS, NO ONE REMEMBERS QUITE WHEN IT BEGAN. Mom and Dad-- Amy and Dan Hazen, had just finished opening Christmas morning presents with their teenage daughters Molly and Emily. There were many joy-filled smiles at the thoughtfulness and creativity of the gifts they had exchanged. While bows and wrapping paper had turned the carpet into a festive patchwork quilt, the Christmas tree now looked a bit forlorn, it’s foundation of colorful packages having been removed. There was still one gift left to open, though it wasn’t to be found under the tree. A plain white envelope was tucked between branches near the top of the tree. Always the last to be opened, it had become the family’s special Christmas tradition. As Molly reached for it, the laughter and conversation quieted down in anticipation. Inside the envelope is a story to be read aloud. Some tears flowed at the tender story of another family’s give away Christmas gift to someone in need–in place of more gifts for themselves. This story was the inspiration for this Hazen family Christmas tradition. Amy’s handwritten note on the bottom of the page reveals the Hazen’s special gift that Christmas. Soccer balls are being purchased for kids in a country where soccer is played with a ball made of taped together trash. The Hazen girls, both soccer players, loved the idea of other kids having brand new, official soccer balls. A simple white envelope has once again reminded them that giving is at the core of Christmas.

If you would like to start your own white envelope tradition, download the original story from our website, www.westwoodcc.org/christmas.

Westwood has our own white envelope tradition. On Christmas Eve, during all of our services, we receive an offering (in a white envelope!) designated for those outside of our church that are in great need. While a portion of every offering throughout the year helps support our compassion and outreach ministries, *Christmas Eve is the one offering that goes entirely outside our doors. Some of the dollars provide food for the food pack that we hold each year, helping to feed hungry children and families around the world. Last year we helped provide solar-powered lanterns so that children living in one of the world’s largest slums could do homework after dark. We have provided shelter, medical care, clothing and shoes—all expressions of love in Jesus’ name to the poor and oppressed around the world. To learn more about the people that this year’s offering will bless, please go to www.westwoodcc.org/christmas.

A Christmas Memory For sure my favorite Christmas traditions have to do with food! My mom would start baking holiday cookies and candies in October. She’d bake more than a dozen varieties and hundreds of goodies. And that’s no exaggeration! She’d then attempt to hide them in the downstairs freezer. I’m fairly certain she’d make a few dozen extra, figuring it’d be impossible for some of us to wait until Christmas. Then there’s our traditional Christmas Eve meal. Are you ready to drool with delight? Sloppy Joes, fruit salad complete with maraschino cherries, Old Dutch ripple potato chips with confetti dip, and plenty of dill pickles. Likely, on your list of top ten holiday menus, too. Of course, the meal always follows Christmas Eve worship, certainly, the highlight of celebrating our Savior’s birth!

A Christmas Memory I grew up in a small town north of Boston. My father worked for IBM in downtown Boston, so we often went in to town (as we called it) to meet him for events and dinners out. As Christmas approached no time was more anticipated than when my family would take the train into Boston and then hop on the Green Line subway to the Park Street station. Coming out of the subterranean warmth of the subway station, stepping into the brisk winter evening, and gazing wide-eyed at Boston Common all lighted for Christmas was magical for me as a young boy. From there we would wend our way down a cobble-stoned street to amble past wonderfully animated Christmas scenes in the enormous department store window displays. From there we would head to dinner. Chilled, but delighted at what we had just seen, we were warmed more from being together as a family than the heat of the restaurant. I still enjoy seeing animated Christmas scenes. My boys groan about this, but for many years we have gone to Macy’s in Minneapolis to see the animated Christmas figures. After a leisurely look at the colorful figures we drop in to the Oak Grill restaurant, sit by the fireplace, and enjoy a long, hearty Christmas meal. It is still one of my most favorite things to do as a family. For a few minutes each year it is kind of like being a kid again in Boston at Christmas time.

A Christmas Memory Every Christmas I love to spend time with those I love most. I love to play some old vinyl Christmas records and set up the tree with my wife. I love to gather around one table where everyone has their place and eat the best meal of the year. I love to hurl snowballs at my brothers when they aren’t looking. Christmas is packed with good times! But every year I want to stop in the midst of all this, and remember Emmanuel, God with us, our light in the dark. It’s good news for us all. This is the beauty and promise of Christmas, and I’m glad we get to know it together this year again. I am so excited for Westwood’s Choir and Orchestra Christmas Concert this year with special guest Sara Groves. Her music has no doubt left an indelible mark on me personally. I know I’m not alone in this, as God has used her to move many, bringing listeners to the heart of the moment through her songs, and to the heart of the season when it comes to Christmas. I’m so proud and inspired as well by our own Choir and Orchestra! They’ve invested a great deal of time, energy and heart into bringing this year’s music to life. I hope you can join us for our annual Christmas Concert on Friday, December 12.

Classes Alpha Tuesdays, January 6–March 24, 6:00–9:00pm Room A112

Classes Faith demands thinking. Lots of it. God has given us a powerful tool for growing our faith–and that is our mind and the ability to think about Him, life, and faith. At Westwood we have a set of classes that happen regularly that will enable you to think deeply and wrestle through concepts of faith with other people that are with you on this journey.

Do you sometimes wish you could stop the pastor and ask a question? Do you want to learn the best way to read your Bible? Do you know if God hears your prayers? Do you wonder why God allows suffering? Alpha is an opportunity to explore these and many other subjects in a relaxed, friendly setting. The Alpha course is 12 weeks, meeting once per week on Tuesdays and one amazing Saturday. In each session people enjoy great food, laughter, and learning. No question about life or God is seen as too simple...questions like “Why am I here?...Am I going to heaven? So if you are going through some tough times and are questioning your faith, if you’ve been in the church for years but still feel like a babe in Christ, if your faith has hit a plateau, or if you are simply struggling with the idea of Christianity, then come to Alpha. Registration opens noon, December 5.* Cost: $17 for materials. A donation of $5 per dinner is appreciated. Contact: Kim Martinek, 612.532.7937, kimmartinek@yahoo.com

As we discuss these topics around tables, we will learn together by teachings from Westwood’s pastors, Joel Johnson, Brian Suter, Laura Gilbertson and Dave Trautmann. A Christmas Memory For me, Christmas has always held this magical appeal. The music, the lights, the sounds, the smells. There is nothing in the world quite like the appeal that Christmas has that resonates deep within our very souls. My love for Christmas began the day I discovered that the same songs from the movie Fantasia were taken from the Nutcracker. A whole two hours of devoted dancing to my favorite songs?? YES!! Christmas is so magical! Read more by Jessica at www.westwoodcc.org/christmas-memories.

Groups/Studies Bible Study: Lamplighters Lamplighters Bible study groups offer several opportunities to study Scripture, make new friends, grow spiritually, and learn how to be a disciple for Christ.

Lamplighters Men’s Groups A Christmas Memory As a little kid, there was no moment in the year quite like Christmas. Christmas Tree? Awesome. Presents? Of course. Opening up a brand new Dukes of Hazard Big Wheel on Christmas morning of 1986? Legendary. My mom’s caramel rolls? Ate 12 of them in 20 minutes. Waking my family up at 5:30 in the morning because I couldn’t wait for presents anymore? Loved it. (I’m now paying for that with young kids in my home). These are wonderful memories I hold–how great is all this? My favorite moment of Christmas above all others though, was singing Silent Night in church. Passing the flame from person to person, and watching the room fill with light was a sacred moment. For my young mind, it was a moment in which I knew that this story that we’d gathered around was one in which light has broken through the darkness. That Jesus’ “Inauguration” changed everything. This world, and my life would never be the same.

2015 Men’s Bible Study Gospel of Luke–From the Outside In Tuesdays, January 20–April 7, 7:00–8:30pm, Room A205 A twelve week study of the Gospel of Luke including small group discussion with a short video lesson every week. Each week will include discussion questions and homework. From the start of Luke to finish, Jesus is depicted as accessible to the unknowns, the outcast, the lost, and the hopeless. Luke points out that Jesus’ desire was not just to call sinners but to call sinners to repentance (Luke 5:32) and find reconciliation with God. As a result, this return to God by outsiders causes insiders to reevaluate the biblical story and examine what the foundation of their relationship with God ought to be. Groups/Studies Women’s Bible Study–Tuesday Mornings Tuesdays, January 13–February 24, 9:30–11:30am* Woodside One in a Million by Priscilla Shirer The Egyptians in Exodus 1 were intent on enslaving the Israelites, wearing them down so that God’s chosen people would become disillusioned and not live up to their destiny. Of the original two million Israelites who received God’s invitation to enter the Promised Land, only two actually entered it! Similarly, modern day Christians often hear and understand the promises of God each Sunday morning at church, but then rarely choose to experience them in everyday life. During this sevenweek study, Bible teacher Priscilla Shirer invites us to change the pattern for good, living beyond our circumstances and expecting to see God move in miraculous ways day after day. One in a Million is an opportunity for you to experience your deliverance from strongholds, to conquer your wilderness living, and to claim your God-given inheritance. Cost: $17 / $22 after January 4. Tuesday Morning Childcare A childcare program is offered for children age birth through Kindergarten, to women participating in Bible Study on Tuesday morning. This program exists to serve you and your children! The mission of the program is to provide loving, quality care and biblical teaching for children in a secure, Christ-centered environment. There will be consistent teachers for each classroom with curriculum for children ages 3-K. In order to best staff the program, we may need to supplement with parent volunteers. You may need to serve one time this session.
