Kids Birth/Adoption Announcements We love celebrating the birth and adoption of kids at Westwood. To share your joyous news in Volume One, please contact Teri. Contact: Teri Braun, 952.224.7330, teri.braun@westwoodcc.org

Child Dedication Information Class What’s new with kids and families at Westwood? We want Westwood kids to develop hearts of compassion and mercy, to love others, just like Jesus does. We want to instill in them the value of seeing others the way Jesus sees each of us—that we are each precious, valued and treasured, that we each have human dignity and purpose.

Sunday, April 26, 9:45–10:45am Prairie Room At Westwood, Child Dedications happen during regular worship services, generally on the third weekend of each month. This is a formal, special way to give thanks to God for the precious gift of a child He has bestowed upon us. Parents who are dedicating children for the first time at Westwood are strongly encouraged to attend the one-time informational class that helps explains what Child Dedication is in our setting. Contact: Teri Braun, 952.224.7330, teri.braun@westwoodcc.org

When a person is homeless, they can also be hopeless. Westwood Kids’ Ministries has been partnering with CRU Inner City to bring Christ’s hope to the homeless in the Twin Cities—to offer up simple human necessities like personal care items and warm blankets that remind folks in need that they, indeed, have worth and value to the One who knows them best and loves them most—Jesus, Himself, and that in Him, they can have a new beginning.

Spring Respite Night

For every $38 Westwood kids bring in for offering, we are able to provide one Care Kit. That is really exciting! To make it SUPER-EXCITING, though, we set a goal of reaching $1500, which provides 40 kits. To incent students, Eric Theisen, Elementary Associate, agreed to sleep overnight in a cardboard box. Cardboard is something folks who are homeless use to keep warm at night, in the absence of a warm blanket. At present, the goal is in sight, and it looks like Mr. Eric is destined to camp out!

Tuesdays, April 14–May 19, 6:30–8:00pm, Room B125*

Looks like there’s nothing we can’t accomplish when God is in charge and kids are excited to make a Kingdom impact! Blessed to be a blessing!

Saturday, April 11, 5:00–7:30pm* Friends of Special Families Ministry, get ready to play ball! Wear your favorite baseball jersey & meet us “at the park” (Westwood) for a fun night with friends. Games, crafts & a hot dog supper are included. Registration for families and volunteers is open online now through April 9. Contact: Randi Mitchell, 952.224.7316, randi.mitchell@westwoodcc.org

Kids Kids’ Music & Arts Spring Musicals Saturday, May 2, 10:00am & 1:00pm, Woodside JAM (Jesus, the Arts, & Me) and JELLYS (Jesus Especially Loves Little Youngsters Singing) join together to present Herbie & the Good News Garden, a fun bluesy to jazz to pop style musical with a great message. Herbie and his friends realize that sometimes when we want to be a part of something really wonderful, we have to put aside our perfect expectations and get down to what is really important—growing in the Kingdom of God! WiNK (Worship in the Name of the King) is excited to present In the Big Inning, a fun-filled musical about baseball and a surprising glimpse at the Bible’s “Hall of Faith” from Hebrews 11. Moses (“he got his start in the bush leagues”), Noah (“that guy can really swing the lumber!”), and Abraham (“with his son Isaac at the plate, it looks like the Manager is calling for a sacrifice . . . “) suddenly appear on the baseball field. The Good News of the Gospel is driven home with power!

Students Sunday & Wednesday Programing Xchange (grades 6–8) Sundays, 11:10am–12:15pm Room A112 On Wednesday nights, we get to see God interrupt the week of our busy students. Through messages, small group conversation and caring adults, seeds of God’s love are being sown in the lives of our students. Students arrive on Wednesday nights in all states of being. Some are excited to worship, some are looking forward to asking questions and seeking answers, some want to see friends, some have had a hard week and need refreshment in a caring community. But through it all, God creates a way for something new to sprout up in the lives of our students. Recently an 8th grade girl sent me a message about her hard week. I replied with an encouraging note and she wrote back saying, “God’s plan is always the best! Now I can see it, and I’m having a better week.” God is creating a new thing. Or the 7th grade student who wasn’t excited about attending Boost and last week a smile came across her face when a leader greeted her by name. God is creating a new thing. Or the middle school boy who has lots of questions for his leader and feels safe to ask them here. God is creating a new thing. God gives us examples of his presence when we interact with students and commit to being seed tossers. We just don’t know when a new thing is going to sprout up in the lives of our students. It’s with anticipation we look for examples weekly, believing God is doing a new thing.

We worship together, participate in discussion groups with caring adult leaders, play games and mixers to get moving, and hear a message related to middle school students. Each week we’ll discuss a question to help students consider their faith now and for the future. Students, bring your Bibles! Contact: Pam Schwarz, 952.224.7362, pam.schwarz@westwoodcc.org

Boost (grades 6–8) Wednesdays, 6:45–8:00pm* Woodside Middle school students gather to have fun, explore faith and engage in small group conversation about the message each week. Contact: Pam Schwarz, 952.224.7362, pam.schwarz@westwoodcc.org

Upper Room (grade 9) Wednesdays, 8:00–9:30pm* Room A111 9th grade students come together to grow in their faith, worship through music, build community, connect in small groups, and be challenged to consider what they believe and why. This theology and Christian doctrine program helps solidify faith beliefs. Contact: Pam Schwarz, 952.224.7362, pam.schwarz@westwoodcc.org

En Route (grades 10–12) Wednesdays, 8:00–9:30pm* Woodside High school students come together to explore their faith about what it means to walk with Jesus. Each week includes worship, a message and small group connection. Contact: Pam Schwarz, 952.224.7362, pam.schwarz@westwoodcc.org

10 Minute Party! (grade 9) Sundays, following the 11:10am service Dianne Cotten DeKoning Pastor of Next Generation Ministries 952.224.7308 dianne.dekoning@westwoodcc.org

Students are invited to sit together in the 11:10 service (behind the sound booth in the main Worship Center) and then stay for the 10 Minute Party! We will gather together in the same spot after the service to discuss the sermon and talk about how it applies to the life of 9th graders. Sunday Bible Studies High School Students—Sundays, 1:00–2:00pm, Room A206 Middle School Students—Sundays, 3:30–4:30pm, Room A206 Middle School and High School students have an opportunity to dig deeper with a Bible Study just for them on Sunday afternoons. With busy schedules, demanding homework load and after school sports and activities, we hear that students still make En Route a priority. They say it’s the “highlight of my week” or “it helps me get through my week.” When a new student arrives to one of the ministry programs, this is something that we celebrate! Many times this student has been invited by a friend here. I love hearing the stories of students who are new to Westwood. I love the student who wants to come to Colorado summer camp even though their family is not supportive of the Christian faith. I love the student who, despite their very difficult home life, jumps head first into their faith and takes next steps in being baptized. I love the leader who joins midway through the school year because they know they have a passion to invest into students and share the love of God with them. Student ministry is not a revolving door. It is a place of fresh starts and new beginnings. I love being a part of what God is doing in the lives of those who call Westwood their home! God is doing a new thing in the lives of our students.

Teleios One thing is for sure, God is into things that are NEW! We find these words in the book of Revelation, “Behold, I make all things new”, and in 2 Corinthians 5:17 we see that “if anyone is in Christ, the NEW creation has come. The old has gone, the NEW is here!” For those of us in the second half of life it is a great encouragement that our God is into new things. Much encouragement can be found in 2 Corinthians 4:16, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being reNEWed day by day.” Haven’t we been singing about it all along in the wellloved hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness, “morning by morning NEW mercies I see.” Let’s open our eyes to the many ways God surrounds us with NEW things this spring season and open our hands to receive all the NEW things God wants to give us so that we can in turn give them away. Teleios has three NEW ways for you to experience the mercies of God in the month of April. Do something NEW and consider joining us for one or all of these opportunities.

Volunteer Use Westwood’s New Volunteer Search: Explore opportunities online with our new volunteer search tool: www.westwoodcc.org/volunteer

Every spring I feel as though the earth is renewed, along with my attitude and outlook on life. Winter tends to make me want to hibernate for many months—and the spring brings a freshness and a renewed vision to see what God is doing. Nothing says God “makes all things new” like a spring thunderstorm and budding leaves. With all of the new beginnings and changes happening at Westwood, I am thrilled to share with you that we have two new Usher Leads for Sunday evening Elements. Lynn and Danielle will bring a continuity and strength to the usher team as we move forward. They have expressed with me their delight in serving in an area at Westwood that best utilizes their strengths and fits with their personality. Together they will be a dynamic team. One of Westwood’s core beliefs is that we serve together as a body and allow God to use us and our strengths to further his kingdom. Do you sense God renewing something in your life? Is there a stirring or an awakening to find your “sweet spot” and plug in to Westwood like never before? I’d invite you to check out our new Volunteer Website that allows you to use your skills, gifts and passions in ministry.

Surprised by Faith FORMER SKEPTIC DON BIERLE HAS A STORY TO TELL. A STORY OF A PRIDEFUL LIFE LIVED ON HIS OWN MERIT. A STORY OF QUESTIONING THE LEGITIMACY OF THE BIBLE AND ITS TEACHINGS. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, A STORY OF A LIFE TRANSFORMED BY FAITH AND FORGIVENESS.

Don and Vernee Bierle have been married for over 50 years. They are members at Westwood Community Church. In addition to teaching around the globe for FaithSearch, Don enjoys gardening, hunting and spending time with his family. Don and Vernee have six grandchildren.

Bierle, a Ph. D. biologist, grew up believing in the value of hard work, both academically and in sports. He excelled in both. And the confidence he had in his own abilities took over. “The recognition and awards I received were a formula for fueling my self-identity and values,” he said. While pursuing his Ph. D., Don met several Christian men who challenged the stereotype of what he thought Christians were. These men weren’t pushy. But they were passionate in their defending their faith with evidence. Being very scientific and factbased, Don was intrigued. He loved proving himself right. So he set out to prove them wrong.

He was surprised by the reliability and authenticity of the New Testament writings.

Don immersed himself in his studies. He began to read books on external evidences such as archaeology and manuscript studies. The more he learned, the more surprised he was by the reliability and authenticity of the New Testament writings. The more he critically evaluated the scripture, the more it held up to scrutiny. “For the first time in my life, I was applying the tools of evidence and reason to the investigation of faith,” Don says. “I was astounded to learn that the New Testament manuscripts are more numerous and far more certain to be eyewitness accounts than any other ancient writings.” Don continued his research until an encounter with Job shook his world. He read in Job chapters 38-42 about how Job, after enduring such losses in his life, questioned God. In fact, Job did more than just question God, he went on to argue with God. God replies to Job with confirmation of his sovereignty. Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Job 38:4-5

FaithSearch Discovery Seminar Join us for the FaithSearch Discovery Seminar on Mondays, April 6 and April 13, 7:00-8:30pm to hear Don speak. There is no charge for this event. Materials will be available for purchase the first night of the class including Don’s book Surprised by Faith. More details on page 15

Don says it was then and there that he, a stoic and scientific skeptic, began to cry. He reflected on the awesome power of God. He decided to relinquish his own power so that he could let God lead his life. He was flooded with the profound love that God had for him, a love that would sacrifice his own son to pay the price for his sins. Don’s life has never been the same. As a speaker and author, Don has spent the past 25 years presenting his personal story and the evidence for Christianity all over the world. He gives an eye-opening, evidence-based and logical case for the truths of Christianity in FaithSearch. He answers some of the most common questions about life: Why am I here? Can I believe the Bible? Is Jesus really God? Are all religions the same? How can I experience God? Those who are seeking answers will find compelling reasons for faith in Christ. Christians will be strengthened in their faith by astonishing evidence and testimony.

Transformations THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD TRANSFORMATION IS A THOROUGH OR DRASTIC CHANGE IN FORM. THE GROUP TRANSFORMATIONS IS APTLY TITLED. IT SPEAKS OF THE TRANSFORMING POWER AND HEALING OF GOD IN THE LIVES OF SINGLES IN THEIR 40’S, 50’S, AND 60’S. Transformations began over ten years ago as a place for singles to come together and connect in powerful ways. The focus of the group is consistent with Westwood’s mission to worship God authentically, grow spiritually, serve joyfully, and connect relationally. The group sits together during the Elements service on Sunday nights and meets immediately following, during the school year. They also have regular social events year round. Transformations partners with other area churches to promote events and share ideas. At their recent “Kick up Your Heels” dinner and dance, over 100 singles from the area attended. At the weekly meeting, participants go deeper in to God’s Word through the book study, share dinner together, and connect through small group conversations. Cathy Swanson, the group leader says, “This group has been a second family to me. When I first walked in three years ago, I instantly felt warmth and comfort. They took me in like a broken bird.”

[trans-fer-mey-shuh ns, noun]

The support and care for each other is evident. Whether it is providing repairs for someone or lending a helping hand in moving, group members step up and come alongside one another in times of need. People genuinely care about each other. Says Len Auer, “When I joined 6 or 7 years ago, I was thinking I didn’t want to be labeled as a single. The reality was God provided way more than I dreamed or imagined through the friendships I was blessed with.”

“God provided way more than I dreamed or imagined through the friendships I was blessed with.”

The group welcomes people to drop in anytime at any time and is a very open and welcome place. “We would love to have you. We’ll introduce you and help you feel comfortable,” says Cathy.

Whether you are widowed, never married, or divorced, Transformations is there to meet you where you are at. For more information, contact Cathy Swanson at 952.465.8893 or mailtomecath@gmail.com.

BEGINNING APRIL 12, WE WILL BEGIN A MESSAGE SERIES TITLED “THE DIGITAL INVASION” based on the ground-breaking book by Dr. Archibald Hart and Dr. Sylvia Hart. Our lives have never been more different than they are now with the invasion of the digital age. Technology has made us reachable all the time, and we expect others to be as well. Information is available instantly at the touch of a button. We have the ability to find and connect with almost anyone, anytime. How we use this technology is much more important than the technology itself. We can’t change the world we live in. We can only change how we are affected by it. Our goal should be to manage our lives, in light of the digital invasion, so that we are protecting ourselves, our relationship with Christ, and our relationship with others. Get plugged in for 3 weeks of practical help as we confront the challenges and opportunities that come with technology.

ALTHOUGH SPRING HAS YET TO BE OFFICIALLY SPRUNG outside, Westwood will be blooming with flowers inside. Starting Sunday, April 19 we will be collecting donations of diapers and household goods that will be given to teen moms, refugees, and other families in need in our community.

and an effective plan for adoption or healthy attachment with their children.

Arrive Ministries (Formerly World Relief Minnesota) seeks to be the hands and feet of Jesus by carrying out the command to welcome and bring lifelong transformation to hundreds of refugees and immigrants annually in Minnesota.

Says Denise Hedtke, Parent Educator at New Beginnings, “The adolescent parents benefit by having access to needed supplies and deserved rewards. Many of the items are put to use in our onsite, non-profit child care center. It helps the troubled budget to be able to replace bibs, blankets, batteries, art supplies, and such.”

New Life Family Services is one of the few pregnancy centers in America, and the only one in Minnesota, that incorporates both pregnancy services and licensed adoption services. Their mission is to honor the sanctity of human life by assisting clients in life-affirming decisions with the love and compassion of Christ. New Beginnings is a comprehensive, interagency program supporting pregnant and parenting teens and their families to obtain their high school diploma. Students create a plan for healthy pregnancy, safe childbirth,

Some of the items that are being collected include: diapers and baby supplies, laundry detergent, bed sheets, cleaning supplies, and kitchen items.

Stop by the Lower Link to pick up a flower or two. Each flower has a needed item written on the stem. Purchase the item and bring it back by Sunday, May 3. We will get the items to the organizations for them to distribute. It is our hope that 1,000 flowers will be plucked from our “garden”. Moms will be receiving the donated items in time for Mother’s Day. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of families in our backyard.

Making Sense of Creation & Evolution

“Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it?” Isaiah 43:18–19 (The Message) Isaiah asks a great question…don’t you see it? Don’t you see what God is doing? And He is doing a lot! In the Outreach Group there have been several ministry teams which have started recently. Two in particular have great ministry potential—both locally and globally.

Monday, April 27 and May 4, 7:00–8:30pm, Woodside Room

Justice Ministry Team

Making Sense of Creation & Evolution is a compelling next step after the FaithSearch Discovery class being held right after Easter. As a Ph.D. biologist, Dr. Bierle uses current scientific evidence to unravel creation, evolution and the meaning of life. This lively and enlightening class strips off the hype and takes a scientific approach to the evidence. In this class, Don has chosen a few major themes on which to focus: • Understanding Origins • Understanding Biblical Creation • Understanding Intelligent Design • How to Know the Creator • Understanding Macroevolution

From November through January the newly formed Justice Ministry team elevated our understanding of Biblical justice and what God’s heart is in desiring the church to be the driving force in ensuring justice is upheld to all—but particularly to the most vulnerable of the world. Their work covers both local and global justice efforts.

Malawi Mission Trip In June of 2015, we will continue our partnership with World Relief and return to Malawi to help the church in Chitipa bring hope and economic development to one of the poorest countries in the world. If you would like to be part of this exciting team, contact Chaz Nichols. Contact: Chaz Nichols, 952.224.7464, chaz.nichols@westwoodcc.org

While still in the early stages of development, this team is looking out over all of our local mercy ministries to determine which ones we should resource more deeply, develop ways for serving these organizations more intentionally, and do this by creating a large base of Westwood volunteers. Look for great things to come from this team…and pray about working with them as they seek to reach out to people locally who are in need. God, through Isaiah, says He is about to do something new…it’s bursting out. Don’t you see it? I think we do…and it’s exciting to watch unfold.

Spring is here! Enough of the bone chilling, gray days of winter and on to the sounds of melting snow trickling down the driveway, birds chirping in fragile tree branches, and the brittle blade of grass stretched out to drink in the spring rains. I love spring the best, because it’s a time of renewal and awakening of the earth. It’s a time of NEW beginnings and NEW life. The tiny details of spring invigorate me and give me joy!

MOPS Thursdays, through May 7, Room A112 MOPS (Mother of Preschoolers) is designed to meet the unique needs of moms, with kids from birth through Kindergarten, who share the same desire: to be the very best moms they can be! COST: $60 per mom per session If you are interested in joining MOPS for the spring session which began February 5, please contact Julie or Keri (contact info below), and they will be in touch with you if a spot opens up.

Recently a friend of mine shared a journal entry describing specific blessings that she was thankful for. I was inspired by her level of detail as she accounted for God’s movement in every part of her day. It was moving to notice how “tuned in” she was to God’s familiar presence and that he was the source of her blessings. Even among the minute details: enjoying the weather, spending time with family and friends sharing laughter and tears, serving at church, to the realization of what God taught her through the process of forgiveness, she expressed gratitude for the deep joy that she experienced that entire weekend.

AM MOPS: Every other Thursday, 9:30–11:30am

Life is a gift and each day is a treasure to be grateful for. My hope for each of us is to live with “open hands” in gratitude of what God’s Spirit is doing in our lives. Don’t miss the joy of a new awakening in your spirit this spring and share it with a friend. You’ll both be blessed!

Classes Essentials: A Deep Dive Into the Core Beliefs of the Christian Faith Tuesdays, April 14–June 2, 7:00–9:00pm, Room B100*

Two nights before I wrote these words, I stood on the deck of my home and grilled the inaugural steaks of 2015. For me, there is nothing like the moment that it is warm enough to fire up the grill and get together with people outside—without jackets, mittens, hats, snowpants, awkwardly huge Sorel boots and the occasional facemask when winter gets to be too much. Spring is so fun. There’s new stuff popping up everywhere. As the world is renewed from the slumber of winter, there’s something within me that gets renewed as well. Spring is a great time for faith renewal. Starting on April 12—a NEW session of two great classes begin: Essentials and Lifekeys. These two courses will help renew you and your perspective on faith. Essentials will help you to understand the core beliefs of Christian faith—you may have heard about it over the last few months of church history messages. Often I hear from participants: “This was so good to learn, and it changes the way I experience my faith in Jesus.” Lifekeys will be an exploration at a significant level of how God has created you, and for what purpose he has done so. Participants often share how their learnings in this class impact everything they do— work, home, relationships, and more. Lifekeys will help you to learn more about yourself, and learn more about God as you do. While the world comes alive again this spring—I invite you to learn through Essentials or Lifekeys, it will be a great way for you to grow and be renewed in faith.

Essentials discusses the central beliefs/doctrines of Christian faith in depth. If you would like to increase your knowledge of what we believe as Christians and learn skills on how to dialogue with people who may not believe the same thing, this is a course for you. Essentials is also a great next step if you have gone through Alpha or LifeKeys. We will cover topics like the inspiration of Scripture, the Trinity, salvation, the Church and more. As we discuss these topics around tables, we will learn together by teachings from Westwood’s pastors: Joel Johnson, Brian Suter, Laura Gilbertson, and Dave Trautmann. Our team has been busy ushering in the new in the form of brand new people this season. We’ve welcomed aboard many new choir and orchestra members and hope and expect to welcome many more. I’m so inspired by the heart of those I’ve met in this group seeking to give back to God the gifts given to them. We’re also excited to have new members on staff with us. We’ve welcomed aboard a new worship producer with the addition of Rachel Maurer, a new admin with Dayna Danielson, and two new worship leaders, Ben Garrett and myself. And we’re continually thankful for our faithful and talented Tami and Vicki! I am so grateful for those God has brought together, entwining a team for today and for tomorrow, one called into all that is before us. As we celebrate the richness of what God has already done among us, celebrating the anchor of our past that speaks of God’s faithfulness, we also look forward to the new thing. God is faithful to complete the work begun in us. I love the verse from Isaiah 43:19, “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” I pray our hearts perceive, that they open before God, saying yes to all He has for us. We’re in this together.

Groups/Studies Bible Study: Lamplighters Lamplighters Bible study groups offer several opportunities to study Scripture, make new friends, grow spiritually, and learn how to be a disciple for Christ.

Lamplighters Men’s Groups Gospel of John: Mondays 7:00–8:00pm, Seedlings Bookstore (Chanhassen)

I love hearing stories of God at work in small groups at our church. Each month there are multiple stories, and it never gets old. Like the college-aged women’s group that meets here at Westwood. One night after a meeting, I ran into them as they were enthusiastically discussing the sermon from the Sunday before and talking about how it applies to their lives. I heard the leaders from this group say to me, “I love our group!” Walking through the Commons one Monday morning, I saw a friend here who meets with a group of retired men. They’re studying the Bible together. He said, “We have the greatest Bible Study!” Then on a Monday, I received an email from a friend here, and it had a picture attached. I opened the picture, and I saw the coolest image: The whole small group at brunch to celebrate the baptism of one of its members. Walking through life with friends, and growing in faith—it’s happening all over the place in groups here at Westwood. If you would like to get into a group, you can find all of the groups available at the tables outside the Worship Center or the Woodside room. Give me a call if I can help, I’d love to help you find a group that works for you!
