IBM has launched its second SoftLayer cloud data centre in Australia as part of its US$1.2 billion ($1.57 billion) investment in expanding its cloud services. The new SoftLayer facility in Sydney joins the existing cloud data centre in Melbourne, which launched in September. The cloud centre offers IBM’s full range of SoftLayer cloud infrastructure services, including bare metal and virtual servers, storage, security services and networking. It has a capacity for thousands of physical servers and supports deployment on demand. Customers are offered remote access and control via a dedicated web portal or API to allow them develop customised public, private or hybrid cloud environments. SoftLayer will be conducting a series of training courses in Australian capital cities covering use of the SoftLayer cloud platform. The courses are targeted at solution architects, DevOps and cloud system administrators. IBM Cloud’s existing Australian customers include crowd-sourced business contact management company ChannelPace. The

company’s CEO, Greg Furlong, said the expansion aligns with two of ChannelPace’s key priorities - global reach and scalability. “IBM Cloud’s growing number of SoftLayer data centres - all connected via SoftLayer’s global network - make it easy for us to expand and grow our business,” he said. “With the Melbourne data centre and new Sydney data centre, we have the option of data redundancy right here in our backyard.”
