WEST WEDDINGS AUTUMN 2015 I always love putting together the photoshoot for the magazine, and this issue’s at the gorgeous Aldwick Court Farm & Vineyard was no exception! It was amazing to see the set up that our talented team of local suppliers created, which was captured beautifully by Andrew Jewell Photography. Turn to page 49 to see the final results! Another favourite task for me is collating the real weddings, as there’s nothing nicer than seeing the results of a couple’s hard work come together for a memorable day and to commemorate this on the page. It’s also a lovely bonus when they say how much West Weddings has helped them to organise their celebration, as Gemma and Nicholas on p22 did! If you’d like to see your wedding grace the pages of a future issue, do drop me an email after your big day as I’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re just at the start of your wedding journey or putting the finishing touches to the day, there’s sure to be plenty in this issue to inspire you. If you’re looking for your outfit, check out new season dresses on p2939 and some of our favourite shoes on p67. Want some help in writing yur speech? We’ve put together five top tips on p41 to help with this. if you’d like an eco-friendly celebration, head to p78 for some green venue ideas. And for those of you who love planning using the latest technology, we round up the best wedding planning apps over on p73. Happy reading!

Pretty paper W

e’ve just seen the new de Winton Paper Co stationery products for the autumn 2015 wedding season, and we’re in love! Taking a cue from nostalgia and romance, the company has imagined nuptials in rambling country piles both in the UK and on the continent to create its new ranges, Bloomsbury and Chateau. Chateau is a French toile-inspired design, perfect for a wedding in a vineyard or old chateau. Aged card stock sets off the blue botanical studies that run across the whole suite. The Bloomsbury suite is for the artistic romantic, inspired by 1930s fonts and William Morris style prints, in a whimsical colour palette of peach, cream, pistachio and lavender. Each suite contains an invitation, RSVP, Save the Date, thank you card, menu, information card, itinerary and place cards, and matching accessories such as table plans and table numbers can also be provided. Both suites have been lovingly hand painted in watercolour before being scanned, made perfect and printed on high quality card. De Winton Paper Co can adapt its predesigned collections to suit your wedding for a small fee, or work with you to create something unique with its bespoke service. Whether you’re looking for contemporary or vintage style stationery, head on over to check out its beautiful offerings. The company has promised 10% of the hire charge every time its unique bright pink marquee, nicknamed Petal, is booked for weddings or other events. Caroline Penny, owner of Vintage Marquees, said: “We’re delighted to be contributing to the excellent work done by Breast Cancer Care and hope to donate a significant amount in 2015. Our new, bright pink marquee is the first brightly-coloured, traditional canvas marquee produced in this country and offers customers a new choice in the overall styling of their event.” If you’re looking for a marquee for your reception, the company has over 20 to choose from. As well as the beautiful Petal, there’s also Paris with its arched windows and the rustic Bristol, plus a gorgeous oak framed gazebo, small circus tents and whole lot more.

t’s one of our favourite TV shows, and now Don’t Tell the Bride has its own book to share tips and ideas on how to plan your big day. We’ve seen over 80 hapless grooms plan their partner’s big day with just three weeks and a £12,000 budget, some of which have been memorable for all the wrong reasons -- ceremony in Las Vegas anyone? Author Matt Whyman looks at what it takes to really plan a wedding, going behind the scenes to talk to some of the show’s most popular couples to see how their experiences affected the big day. With chapters on how to organise the stag and hen, who to invite and how to pick the all-important wedding dress, this is both a fantastic guide on how to plan a wedding and a wonderful accompaniment to your favourite wedding TV show!

Wedding décor, winter weddings, fitting into your dress?

Set the scene

Dress dilemma

Question: I’m really struggling to pull together all the elements to create the theme we want for our wedding. Do you have any suggestions on how to do this?

Question: My partner and I are planning a winter wedding and we’d love to add some traditional elements to the day. What suggestions do you have?

Question: I bought a sample dress that’s a size too small and hoped to lose weight to get into it, but the wedding’s now really close and it doesn’t fit. What shall I do?

Peri Pigott from PERIdesigns Ltd at The Wedding & Event Works says:

Sasha Ogborne, Wedding and Events Manager at Thornbury Castle says:

Helen Dorritt, editor of West Weddings says:

Answer: Think about who you are as a couple and your own style. Are you flamboyant or quiet? Do you like strong bold colours or vintage pastels? Using these elements, cut out articles from wedding, fashion and home style magazines. Pop to your local DIY and pick up some paint colour charts, then create a mood board to help you visualise your theme, either on paper or on Pinterest. You can then start sourcing the items needed to create the look you want. But bear in mind if you do this the logistics of setting it up on the day of the wedding, and who can do this. If this is proving a bit too tricky to organise then the best path to take is to choose a venue decor company and create the theme you want with their help, without the stress, time spent sourcing items and actually doing the job on the day of the wedding.

Answer: Winter Weddings are very popular here at Thornbury Castle, and the castle is a stunning venue with the darker nights, roaring fires and frost on the ground. For couples looking for a celebration with traditional touches, my suggestion would be to use lots of candlelight, and put tealights in fireplaces and windowsills as well as on tables. Once lit, just use seasonal foliage such as holly, pine cones, fir and ivy plus lots of twinkling fairy lights for a truly magical feel. For your pre-reception drinks offer your guests a warming glass of mulled wine or cider, and for a real festive feel serve mince pies instead of canapés. For an authentic traditional feel, you could also go for a medieval-themed wedding complete with a bespoke feast created especially for you, which is something that we offer here at Thornbury Castle, as well as packages for winter weddings.

Answer: First of all, don’t panic! Take the dress to a seamstress or tailor who specialise in adjusting wedding gowns, and see if there’s anything they can do. Sometimes just letting out the seams by a few millimetres can make all the difference, or they can perhaps do something clever with a fabric panel. If there’s no way that it can be made bigger, however, my advice would be to cut your losses and buy another one. If it’s a sample dress then you should be able to sell it onto another bride who’ll love it just as much as you – it’s worth contacting someone such as the Bristol Bridal Boutique to see if they’d be interested in selling it for you. After all, you want to look and feel your absolute best on your wedding day and you won’t if you’re squeezed into your dress and feeling miserable because you can’t eat any of your delicious meal!

Cast your vote G

et your voting slips at the ready -- it’s time for the launch of the 2016 Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards! This event, which started in 2014 and has gone from strength to strength, celebrates all the wonderful wedding suppliers in the Bristol and Somerset area. The 2015 awards ceremony at the Bristol Hotel was a night to remember, with winners including Stacey Jade Hair, Bridezillas, Pretty Amazing Cakes and the Little Wedding Helper, and all ticket profits going to support the work of local charity The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation. This year the event has a brand new website to make voting even easier, so if you’re a local business head over there for details of the nominations, the entry process and the awards ceremony, and if you’re a bride or groom who would like to nominate your suppliers for a job well done, then go and cast your votes for your favourites! Best foot forward If you’ve found your perfect wedding shoes but are wondering how you’re going to stand ten hours wearing them, then a pair of Alice Bow insoles may just be the answer! The company makes orthopaedic padded leather insoles to slip into your shoes to provide you with comfy feet all day long. They’re cut away at the front so they work with any design, and are thin enough to fit in shoes while also being cushioned where you need it most, under the ball of your foot. A favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge, who recently revealed that they’re her secret weapon when wearing high heels, they come in a range of gorgeous colours including gold, silver and bronze so they don’t look unsightly when you take off your shoes. The company also makes a special blue bridal version that features an embedded silver sixpence, and as the final line of the bridal rhyme ‘Something borrowed...’ is ‘And a silver sixpence for your shoe’, what better way to appease superstition and be super comfortable in your wedding shoes at the same time? ALICE BOW W: WWW.ALICEBOW.COM

Vintage glamour Love vintage style? Want to feature in your own, unique piece of artwork? Then new venture A Loquacious Mind is right up your street. Working with images taken from your wedding or from a specifically set-up shoot, this Bristol-based company set up by photographer Joanna Ritchie uses the 19th century printing process of gum bichromate to create alternative artwork which brings together photographic imagery with elaborate illustration. The process involves printing on watercolour rag paper and uses ammonium dichromate which, when mixed with gum arabic and watercolour paint, becomes insoluble when exposed to UV light. Layering up negatives and different colour paint, a romantic print is created, with the resulting artwork being old fashioned, beautiful and, due to the temperamental nature of this process and its endless changeable factors, completely unique. fter months of development and design, wedding fair organisers Love Actually Weddings was extremely happy to launch its new website during the summer. David and Emma from Love Actually have been organising events since 2008, and they continue to improve their brand and make wedding planning that much easier for engaged couples across the region. “The old website worked amazingly well for many years, but it was time for a new look, a new design and a new refreshing way of finding the wedding fairs that we organise,” says David. “Designing the new site was driven by the way we now access the internet. A lot has changed since 2008 and our old website was not particularly user-friendly for tablet or smartphone users, so something had to be done. The site is so much more inviting and includes promotional features for each venue, along with the important dates of each event.” The new site also has a quarterly competition for couples, and features some very useful information if you’re a wedding supplier looking to exhibit with the company. “We’re so happy with the new look -- it’s neat and tidy, great on the eye and gives our target audience a easy way to find exactly what they are looking for,” explains David. Emma added: “It was a very tough time for me whilst David worked constantly on the new website but I’m thrilled with what he has achieved. It’s brilliant that couples can now access our website on every platform without the worry of zooming in and out and getting frustrated using a tablet or smartphone. It’s super user-friendly and I am sure that engaged couples will keep checking back for more information on Love Actually’s events.” The company is gearing up for an exciting autumn season which includes celebrating its 150th fair, so head over to the website today to find out your nearest event.

The word is out Get set for one of Bristol’s biggest wedding fairs this autumn, with The Word on Weddings hosting an event on Sunday 18th October at the newly-renovated Ashton Gate Stadium. The home of Bristol City has undergone a £45 million refurbishment which has bought the ground up to date and made it one of Bristol’s most exciting venue spaces. The venue will welcome the public in conjunction with The Word on Weddings to showcase the beautifully transformed Dolman Suite. A wedding at Priston Mill was the culmination of a jetsetting relationship for Lucy Haver and Pete Trewin

ombining the best of British with laid back Aussie charm, Lucy and Pete’s summer wedding was a celebration of a relationship that has spanned numerous countries and continents. Welsh Lucy and Australian Pete initially met in Spain, then got together in Australia, moved to the UK together, travelled around South America and Thailand, and then moved back to Australia, meaning that the wedding had a definite international theme! “Pete and I have had to leave and greet each other at four different airports six different times,” explains Lucy. “At our wedding breakfast, our groomsman Nick appropriately quoted the Hugh Grant line from Love Actually about the feeling when people reunite at Heathrow airport and how it shows that ‘love is all around us’. It was very meaningful for us both and something we definitely can relate to.” The couple spent the weekend in Bath following their engagement, and decided that they’d like to return to this historic city for their wedding. An internet search found them the Tithe Barn at Priston Mill and they were instantly smitten. “We were after something old and in the beautiful British countryside, as a number of our guests were coming from different parts of the world and we wanted to show them the historical town of Bath and all things British! We were also planning a vintage countryside themed wedding which the barn and the surrounding fields encapsulated so well.” Pimms, bunting, cupcakes and lawn games represented the British side, while flip flops for the ladies and Australian beer added a fun Antipodean touch. The couple’s passion for travel was also showcased via photos around the venue and a slideshow organised by family.

Weddings WEST

Autumn 2015_Real Weddings.indd 19

Lucy’s gorgeous low backed lace dress even got into the travelling theme, being bought in Sydney and then making its way to Bath via Dubai and London. With Lucy living apart from her British family and friends, celebrating with loved ones was an important part of the day – in fact, Lucy’s love for her family and friends was one of the things that first attracted Pete to her. The couple were keen to show guests how much they meant to them, which they did with photo collages in the venue and pictures placed on the bunting. One family member also deserves an extra special mention. “The day wouldn’t have come together without Dianne Haver, Lucy’s mum,” says Pete. “As we had to organise the wedding from Sydney, Dianne was invaluable in communication with suppliers. She also was responsible for the family collage, table plan and individual name cards.” Music is another of the couple’s passions, so they chose a band, The Sessions, whose playlist matched their love for Motown and rock music. “We had three meaningful songs in the ceremony, and the table names were album covers from our favourite bands and bands that reminded us of keys times in our relationship,” says Lucy. “Our first song was an acoustic version of the Foo Fighters ‘Everlong’ , which brings back memories of when we saw them at Reading festival, which was the first of many festival trips together.” The sunny July day was captured by Belinda McCarthy, whose natural, relaxed style of photography perfectly matched the feel of the wedding. “Belinda instantly made Pete and me feel at ease with her level of experience with wedding photography, interest about us as a

couple and the feel we hoped to get from the day,” enthuses Lucy. “She and her assistant just felt part of the guests and caught so many natural expressions from the guests when they were laughing, playing the outdoor games, enjoying the food and dancing. We loved being able to don our wellies and head into the nearby field to get some beautiful couple shots in the countryside on the sunny summer’s afternoon.” Lucy and Pete both agree it was an unforgettable day that surpassed expectations. “Thank you to the British weather for being kind and the beautiful countryside and city of Bath!” says Lucy. “We love dancing and music and so we loved having so much fun with our fabulous guests, most of who we hadn’t seen for over a year.” And love clearly was all around that night, as the guest who caught Lucy’s bouquet (with three slightly bent roses, as on first throw it hit a beam in the barn!) got engaged just a month later.

or Charlotte and Liam, soulmates really do exist. After first dating at the age of 14, they reconnected at the age of 20 and sealed their commitment to each other with an August wedding at Priston Mill. The proposal had been intended as a surprise for Charlotte, but after accidentally finding out the plan on Christmas morning, she didn’t seem to mind too much. “I felt bad but at least it meant I got to choose my own ring!” And after initially liking a Tiffany diamond cluster that was a gobsmacking £12,400, Charlotte found a very similar one in Fraser Hart. “I just fell in love with it.” Getting married at Priston Mill was a very easy decision for Charlotte and Liam. Located in stunning countryside and bursting with history, it’s no wonder the couple chose it for both their ceremony and reception venue. “I suggested loads of different venues to Liam and his favourites were ‘the barn or the zoo’,” says Charlotte. “Priston Mill was the first and last venue we viewed and we both loved it.” It was important for Charlotte that she had all of her guests attend the whole wedding, rather than splitting the day into two parts, and both of them wanted to make it a fun-filled day for guests, which they contributed to by stocking up on sweets and cakes, games and entertainment for the kids, a photo booth and a hog roast in

Weddings WEST

the evening. “I was first in the queue!” says Charlotte. “I just wanted to make sure everyone was entertained for the whole day, as I’ve been to weddings before and it feels like it drags on,” explains Liam. “Thankfully we kept lots of energy in ours for the whole day.” The other priority for the groom? “To get to wear my top hat!” Charlotte wore a gorgeously simple strapless dress from A Class Brides while Liam sported a dapper grey suit, along with his beloved top hat. Liam’s best friend Andy was the best man in matching grey, although for a while it seemed like he might be accessorising it with bare feet. “Andy thought he had lost his shoes the morning of the wedding. Thankfully he found them before I felt compelled to strangle him.” In striking mauve and grey lace detail dresses were the bridesmaids, Charlotte and Liam’s two sisters, with Charlotte’s two year old goddaughter wearing a beautiful pink dress. Despite an August wedding date, the British summer nearly didn’t play ball. “We had the tail end of a hurricane but luckily there were some sunny spells! It didn’t faze us.” And looking at their gorgeous photos, taken by the talented Martin Dabek Photography, it is evident their spirits were far from dampened and happiness was present the whole time. With a honeymoon in sunny Mexico to top it

all off, the memories of this beautiful day will stay with Charlotte and Liam for a lifetime to come. “The day was all we had dreamed of and more,” says the bride. “It was so important to us that our guests were happy and enjoying themselves. Many of our guests told us afterwards it was the best wedding they had ever been to – they might just be polite but it was an amazing day!”

hey say never work with children or animals, but this certainly wasn’t the case for Gemma and Nicholas’ wedding! With rings delivered by an owl and their three children Ellis, Bunnie and Abrey playing a large part in the day, this Gloucester celebration was “the wedding of my dreams!” declares Gemma. A whirlwind romance followed the couple’s first meeting in March 2010 and their family expanded rapidly; Bunnie was born the following July and Abrey the following October, joining Gemma’s son Ellis. They also bought their first home together in February 2012, so by the time that Nick proposed at Christmas 2012, Gemma was definitely ready! The couple were married at St Laurence Church in Longney, Gloucester, which held special memories for them already, as Gemma’s parents live in the village and their children were christened at the church. There was a twist on the traditional service, however; one that took their guests a little by surprise. “I had always dreamt of a church wedding with a wow factor, and that for me was having our wedding rings delivered by Molly the barn owl in style down the aisle. Our guests were not at all expecting a flying visit during our vows!” laughs Gemma. The festivities then moved to the Walls Club, whose location next to a large green meant that the wedding guests could enjoy a bucking bronco as part of the entertainment. In fact, the arrival of this was one of Nicholas’ highlights of the day – “it meant I could finally relax and begin to enjoy the rest of the evening. Up until then I couldn't as I was a bit nervous about my speech!” A lot of thought went into the wedding party’s clothes, with both Gemma and Nicholas wearing bespoke shoes – for Gemma, a one-off pair of pearl and bead encrusted heels, and for

Weddings WEST

Autumn 2015_Real Weddings.indd 23

Nicholas a pair of mint green brogues. Both were also customised with diamante words on the sole – Gemma’s declaring ‘I Do’ and Nicholas’ stating ‘She’s mine’! Their flower girl, daughter Bunnie, modelled a specially imported feather dress, gloves and bespoke tiara from America. “As she loves dressing up in fancy dresses on a daily basis, I knew this role would suit her perfectly,” says Gemma. “When she tried on her outfit for the first time she refused to take it off as she was admiring herself in the mirror, and she loved all the attention on her that day.” Gemma’s ring was also custom-made to match the wedding colours of mint and pink, featuring pink sapphires and diamonds. A highlight of the day was the cake created by Anne Gliddon of Pretty Amazing Cakes, who Gemma found through this very magazine! “The attention to detail was superb and it really did taste as good as it looked. It was a real talking point and everyone couldn’t wait to tuck into it.” Guests also enjoyed sweets, candy floss and macaroons, personalised with mint and pink labels, which were displayed on a cart made by Gemma’s father. Carissa and Paul from Capture Every Moment were the couple’s photographers, a father and daughter team who are based in the Cotswolds. Gemma praises their communication in the run up to the wedding. “We had a pre-wedding photo shoot a couple of months prior to the day, and it was easy to relax and feel comfortable with both of them.” Nicholas was a little nervous when Gemma was half an hour late in arriving at the church, but the rest of the day went without a hitch. “I really loved seeing all my plans come together on the day; there was a great sense of achievement. I was so happy to tie the knot and to marry the man of my dreams after waiting

for him for so long, and I must say that all my wants and wishes came true on our wedding day!” says Gemma. “I didn’t want the wedding to come to an end,” admits Nicholas, “although that’s partly because I knew our home building renovations were commencing a few days later!” And the happy-ever-after for this couple didn’t stop there, as just a few weeks after the wedding they discovered Gemma was expecting another baby. The arrival of Lenny in May this year has meant they’ve had to postpone their family honeymoon to Florida until next year, but they’re thrilled their “added extra” will be able to be a part of it.

hamsin and Mike’s relationship started with an office romance and was sealed with a proposal in a hotel during a special weekend away, when Mike surprised his bride-to-be with a ring “that she would be excited to wear for the rest of her life.” Khamsin was relieved it was in private, and also pleased that Mike had remembered to ask her dad first. “This was something that had been mentioned in passing ages before. It seems outdated, but my sisters and I think it was really cute that my Dad had asked my granddad, and so it’s being established as a family tradition, despite the fact that my granddad’s response to my Dad was ‘I think you better ask her’!” The couple opted for their ceremony and reception at the Slaughters Country Inn in Lower Slaughter, set in the beautiful Cotswolds, and a venue that exceeded all their expectations. “The events manager, Tess, was a delight. She was really enthusiastic; she seemed to be as excited about us getting married as we were!” says Khamsin. “We can’t thank her enough.” Khamsin wore a bespoke dress by designer Amanda Heslop, who talked the bride through every step of the dress making process, and even did an emergency bridesmaid dress repair just before the wedding. “It felt brilliant to be walking down the aisle in my handmade, bespoke silk and lace dress. I felt incredibly glam,” recalls Khamsin. Delicious food was a priority for the couple, and one of the highlights was having two wedding cakes – a 12kg ‘cheese’ cake made from

Weddings WEST

Autumn 2015_Real Weddings.indd 25

big wheels of cheese, which was served with chutney made by Khamsin’s mum to her great grandmother’s recipe, plus cupcakes by The Cupcake Fairy Evesham. “She asked for some of the fabric we were using for the decorations and matched the icing perfectly, as well as the flower designs on the cakes. They looked spectacular, so good you almost didn’t want to eat them, but when you did, any sense of guilt went out the window because they tasted incredible too!” The couple wanted their friends and family to enjoy the day as much as them, and for Khamsin, the best part of the day was having all her loved ones together to celebrate with her and her new husband. For Mike, “specific details are hazy, despite how much thought was put into them beforehand, but I remember how much my cheeks ached from smiling and laughing, I remember feeling like everything was exactly how we had hoped and I remember Khamsin’s face when we said I do.” Phil from Reward Photographics was on hand to record the day, and the couple loved the images he created for them. “We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for the manner in which he captured the most exciting and enjoyable day of our lives. Our discussions in the build up about what we wanted, and his favoured approach had us confident that things would work out well, and in fact that is an understatement. We, and our guests, couldn’t be happier with the pictures we have from our wedding, as they really convey the atmosphere of the day – and make us all look good!” Phil

also got to document some things he probably wasn’t expecting. “I’m lucky to have a close knit group of friends that despite all going off in various different directions, when we get together it’s like we’ve never been away,” explains Mike. “The downside to this is that it is also like we have never grown up. A good example of this is that by 8pm in the evening there had been space hopper races, skinny dipping, tree climbing and a photographer who had seen more of some of my friends than he could ever have expected.” Sounds like a great wedding to us!

annah and Mike first met at school in year 7, and at the age of 11 went out for one week. Fast forward 11 years, and Mike proposed to Hannah at the top of the Burj Al Arab in Dubai over afternoon tea. “Once we sat down and it started to sink in, Mike then said that we were being picked up and chauffeur-driven around Dubai for a tour, to then be dropped off at the Mall where I picked my own engagement ring,” Hannah says. “I tried on lots but saw ‘the one’ and just knew! It was sent away to be resized and delivered to our hotel that evening. The whole proposal was so much better than I ever expected!” The couple got married just over a year later on 20th September at St Leonard’s Church, Tortworth on a warm and sunny day. “It was the perfect church for us,” explains Hannah. A reception followed at the stunning Old Down Manor, whose grounds made for some lovely photos. “We headed over to see the donkeys as the couple both love animals. Unfortunately the donkey was a little shy, but with the use of Hannah’s beautiful bouquet as bribery we lured the donkey over for a few photos!” says Jodie

from JD Photography, who expertly captured all the memories of the wedding day. Mike’s dream for the day was “to see Hannah smile”, and she certainly did! “I had a vision in my head that we discussed and worked towards,” says Hannah. There was a rustic autumnal theme for the day which was achieved with lots of attention to detail – and even some hay bales outside for guests to sit on! The flowers, by Greenfields Florists, featured bouquets with soft pink and purple roses, daisies and beautiful autumnal berries, plus mini floral posies in the bridesmaids’ hair. “Our suppliers made our day a reality and we couldn’t have asked for more,” says Hannah. The bride was resplendent in a lace fishtail dress by Maggie Sottero from Rookery Manor Bridal, while Mike looked dapper in a grey suit with a bow tie. The couple had a large bridal party, with four adult bridesmaids who wore beautiful full length pale mauve dresses, plus three mini bridesmaids and four page boys, most of whom were family members. “It was perfect; the day I married my soulmate and best friend,” declares Mike. “I loved seeing

Hannah walk down the aisle and it was great to have so many of our loved ones spending the day with us. We will forever be thankful to all of those who contributed to the best day of our lives, which we will treasure forever.” Hannah agrees. “It was amazing, emotional, exciting and truly perfect.”

GROOMS

Here here!

Whether you’re a seasoned debater or sweaty-palmed first timer, Louise Jarndyce has a guide to help you deliver the perfect wedding speech

A

h, the speeches at a wedding. For some they’re the highlight of the day; for others, they’re a reason to break out in a panic at the thought of having to stand up and speak in public. This article is for all of you orators out there, from the grooms who’ve been dying to share your bon mots with the wedding guests ever since the proposal, to those who are performing this tradition somewhat reluctantly. And it’s not just for grooms: best men, fathers, mothers and brides, anyone who is thinking about giving their two penn’orth on the day, read on for some helpful hints.

MIX IT UP

KEEP IT SHORT

PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS

People have a finite attention span, especially when they’ve been drinking, so don’t stretch this by delivering a speech that rambles on and on. This is particularly important when there are a number of people speaking. I once went to a wedding where the best man’s speech took 45 minutes, meaning that by the end of it I wasn’t even listening. In this case, less is definitely more, so anything up to around 15 minutes is perfectly fine. And it also means that people’s bets on the length of the speeches are more likely to win them the pot!

There’s a lot of pressure on people giving wedding speeches to deliver a flawless yet hilarious presentation, but this is never going to come easy for everyone. If you’re not a natural public speaker, or can’t deliver a joke to save your life, don’t worry about being funny. A friend of mine was a best man for the wedding of a well-known comedian’s sister, who apparently got his comic timing from his dad. Both of these naturally funny men were going to be speaking, so my friend decided to go down the sincere route rather than aiming

Weddings WEST

Autumn 2015_Grooms.indd 41

Wedding speeches traditionally come at the end of the meal, but there’s nothing to stop you changing the order. In fact, if you’ve got some nervous speakers then it can be a benefit to have some or all of the speeches delivered earlier so they can enjoy their food. You could split them up over the course of the wedding breakfast, or get them all done before the first pork terrine is even served. And, of course, don’t feel you have to stick to the usual father of the bride-groom-best man scenario. The running order and the participants are all open to changes.

to compete. Don’t try to be something you’re not – sincerity is always the best option.

DON’T BE CLIQUEY It’s very easy to pepper your speech with injokes that only a few people will understand, but keep these to a minimum. Inevitably you will touch on a few things that will only be funny or relevant for your closest friends, but you don’t want to alienate the majority of the guests as they’ll very quickly zone out if your speech is all this. Also in this vein: remember who your audience is. Usually at a wedding it’s a mixed bag, so you need to make sure your material is appropriate for everyone listening and keep it (mostly) clean. It’s the wedding, not the stag do, and there’s nothing worse than seeing wedding guests wince and look awkwardly at their shoes.

SPEAK FROM THE HEART The best wedding speeches are those that allow your listeners to share in your emotions: your joy at being married to the person you love, your excitement at sharing the wedding with your closest friends and family, and how happy you are on your wedding day. Yes, making guests laugh is always a bonus, but making them cry is even better. 41

Sweets for my sweet Emily Hamilton looks at how you can go that extra mile for your bride on your wedding day

Y

ou’ve written your speech, chosen your outfit and bought your best man’s gift, so how about now organising a little wedding day present for your bride? These are becoming increasingly popular between the bride and groom. Leading up to your wedding day is often a whirlwind of stress and tension, and the simplicity of a gesture after the intense emotions of the previous months, or even years, can mean more than you realise. So when the day finally arrives, a romantic gesture, big or small, can be the perfect reminder to your bride what the day truly signifies: your love for one another. Here are some of our ideas to fix that beaming grin on your bride-to-be!

1

STAY SENTIMENTAL

2

SUNNY SIDE UP

Create a scrapbook filled with memories and photos of your engagement. Fill it with the times that made you laugh, even those perhaps more stressful times during the planning of the wedding. Add in some tactile objects, such as receipts from wedding items, and a small item that will remind you of the proposal. What better way could you remind her of your wedding journey!

Have her favourite breakfast sent to her in the morning. Whether it’s just a cinnamon bun or bacon and eggs, think about having it presented beautifully with a little note saying that you can’t wait to see her later that day.

3

ALL THAT GLITTERS

Buy a piece of jewellery for her to wear, whether it’s on the day or to save for another time. Try to think 42

Autumn 2015_Grooms.indd 42

outside the box; you don’t necessarily need to splash out on a brand new sparkling piece but something unique, such as a vintage locket with a photo of you both inside, is guaranteed to be well received.

4

AND... RELAX

5

SURPRISE SURPRISE!

Your bride is probably quite tense and maybe even a bit stressed on the run up to the wedding, so this is the time when a good pamper could really come in handy. Book her and one other person, whether it’s a bridesmaid or her mum, in for a massage or treatment the day before the wedding to relax her.

Your bride might think that she’s planned everything down to the last minute, so add in something to surprise her with during the day. What does she really love that she never would have thought of or got round to doing for the wedding? From something tiny such as a type of flower she wanted for the centrepieces but couldn’t get, to booking someone to do her hair, she’ll be thrilled at your gesture.

6

SAY IT WITH FEELING One idea that is quite well known but perhaps underrated is to write your own vows. It can be a rather daunting prospect, but the impact of surprising your bride with your own vows on the day would be extremely thoughtful. Look up tips online for

writing your own vows, but if you get stuck, try reliving one of your favourite memories of her and the words will fall to the page.

7

SWEET SCENT

Does she love perfume? Try sending a bottle to her the morning of the wedding, and make it extra-special by adding a ribbon around it or tying a little flower on. This could be her favourite, or you could pick a new one with which to mark the start of a new chapter. Even better, if there is a scent that is key to your relationship, whether it’s an aftershave or perfume that one of you wore on your first date, send that to her for full blown nostalgia.

8

THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE

Send her a poem to read on the morning and remind her of how you feel for her and how excited you are to make her your wife. Talk about how you felt when you first developed feelings for her. If you’re feeling creative, try writing it on an item; for example, the soles of her shoes for her to find on the day or getting her bridesmaid to tuck it into her bouquet.

a bottle of fizz for them to enjoy. Simple, yet a real treat!

10

ROAD TRIP!

If you’re not heading off on your honeymoon for a little while, surprise your new wife with a mini moon, whether it’s a short city break to a European destination or a romantic staycation in the UK in a gorgeous cottage or boutique hotel. A few days of relaxation will be music to her ears after all that wedding planning! 43

ine always plays a big part in weddings, so we were really excited to be hosted by a working vineyard for our autumn shoot! This was Aldwick Court Farm & Vineyard, a superb venue just south of Bristol. We wanted to celebrate its countryside setting so shoot stylist Kirsten Butler created a rustic theme with a colour palette of peach, sage green, cream and silver. Gorgeous gowns and sharp suits were modelled by real-life couple Sam and Gary Booth, and the day was expertly captured by photographer Andrew Jewell.

THE VENUE

Run by Sandy Luck and team, you’re sure to have nothing less than professional and smooth service at Aldwick Court Farm & Vineyard. It’s a working farm and vineyard that creates award-winning vintages but has also recently opened its beautiful barn doors to weddings, and its location in 300 acres of gorgeous Somerset countryside means that it’s the ideal location for a relaxed and intimate celebration. The venue is fully licensed and ceremonies take place in the seventeenth century Old Barn, before moving to the New Barn and its adjoining bar for a reception to remember! The party can be fuelled by Aldwick’s own wines – it currently makes white, rosé and sparkling. And how appropriate for a wedding that the latter is named Jubilate, Latin for ‘Be joyful – all of you’. Food is provided by the venue's caterers Taste Buds who can create a feast to match the day, from canapés to accompany the welcome drinks to your first meal together as a married couple. Aldwick’s cluster of stone and whitewashed buildings are surrounded by leafy vineyards and sweeping views out towards the Mendip Hills, which make the ideal backdrops for some amazing photos! After the ceremony you can spend your first night as a married couple in The Forge, a private and cosy apartment right 50

Autumn 2015_Shoot.indd 50

next to the barns, which can also be used on the day for the bridal party to get ready. We can’t think of a nicer view to wake up to on your first full day of married life. If this has whetted your appetite for visiting, Aldwick is hosting a wedding fair on Sunday 11th October, so why not pop on over and experience the venue’s warm and friendly hospitality for yourself?

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Andrew Jewell captured the romance of the day seamlessly. As he already knew the venue, he was able to whisk Sam and Gary off into the vineyards and other favourite spots to create beautifully natural shots. Having already established himself within the world of photography, Andrew used his desire to create happiness to move into photographing weddings. “Making people feel at ease and having fun is for me the best way of getting across someone’s personality within an image,” he says. “It’s the most important thing to remember when you're photographing weddings.” As well as digital images, Andrew also loves to photograph in film, as he feels this fully captures and expresses emotions, making it perfect for weddings. It’s rare to find a photographer with the skill and experience to be comfortable shooting in this medium, but Andrew’s images showcase his true talent.

THE BRIDE’S OUTFITS

Our dresses for the day came from White Lace & Promises, a small friendly boutique in Weston-super-Mare which is owned by Jacqui Baker. Offering a unique and personal service, the shop assists you from trying on the dress through to dressing you on the day, and stocks exquisite designer dresses including Justin Alexander, Sweetheart, Romantica of Devon and Lou Lou Bridal. Jacqui chose three gorgeous dresses for Sam to model, all of which

looked as if they had been made to measure for her! We were also lucky enough to have a glimpse of two brand-new Justin Alexander gowns which Jacqui called in especially. Adding a touch of luxury with beautiful accessories, Amanda, the owner of Bridezillas, spoilt us with a wonderful selection of gorgeous final touches from tiaras and hair vines to veils and bracelets. Bridezillas is a fabulous boutique that has recently relocated to Brislington in Bristol, and offers a vast selection of every accessory you could possibly want to complement your dress. On top of selling wellknown designers, accessories can even be made bespoke to each individual bride in house by its own exclusive Abigail Grace Designs, made by Amanda herself. Bridezillas has also recently become stockists for Eliza Jane Howell, a luxurious designer specialising in dresses modelled on the glamorous 1920s. Our dazzling first dress was Justin Alexander 8799, which is from the 2016 collection. It boasted beautiful beaded embroidery at the top with a matching belt, a ruched middle and a simple chiffon bottom. To complement the dress, an ‘Oceana’ hair vine by Ivory & Co added a touch of sparkle, along with a matching ‘Lincoln’ crystal set bracelet band and simple silver ‘Vanderbilt’ earrings, both by Ivory & Co. The next dress was another new one from Justin Alexander’s latest collection (8792). In a silky Champagne colour, what could be better for a vineyard? This slinky silhouette features a 54

Autumn 2015_Shoot.indd 54

bias cut skirt with elegant corded Venice lace at the top, completed with buttons trailing down the intricate and sheer back. Accessorised with oval crystals and freshwater pearls, this gown is the perfect way to channel elegance. The ‘Sandy’ tiara by Ivory & Co matched the tones of the dress perfectly, along with the ‘Gracie’ earrings by Abigail Grace Designs and the ‘Divine Pearl’ bracelet by SassB. Last but not least, Sam modelled ‘Yvonne’ by Romantica of Devon. With buttons down the back to the waist and a flowing tulle skirt, the main feature of the dress is the intricate corded lace top and long sleeves over its sweetheart neckline. Sam’s resemblance to Kate Middleton became even more striking in this gown, and created a look similar to the Duchess’ lace and embroidered Alexander McQueen wedding dress. We co-ordinated it with a delicate ‘Persephone’ tiara by Ivory & Co for added royal emphasis, before switching to the ‘Lavender’ comb by White Ivy in the back of the hair. A glamorous ‘Baltimore’ bracelet by Ivory & Co was added and blush pearl vintage earrings were used to keep the look classic and simple. Sam also modelled two different veils with this dress: a two tier cathedral length veil with a scalloped edge, lace and tiny sequins for shimmer, followed by a single tier chapel length veil with tiny scatter crystals. Accompanied with beautiful ‘Lawrence’ shoes by Benjamin Adams, any bride would be sure to feel like royalty in this outfit!

THE GROOM’S OUTFIT

Our handsome groom Gary was supplied with two striking suits by Anne Harding, which has one of the largest selections of menswear in the region. Offering a wide selection of menswear to suit any style, Anne Harding stocks a variety of designers in all shapes and colours to cater for all members of the groom’s party. As well as having suits for sale, the shop also offers a hire service, which is great for budgets. Gary first wore a mohair royal blue lounge jacket with a matching waistcoat, ivory slim fit wing collar shirt and a pink cravat. The second suit was the same cut but in grey tailor, and matched with a Champagne-coloured cravat.

THE HAIR

Hazel Howell of Hairoics Mobile Hair & Beauty in Weston-super-Mare joined us to create elegant styles for Sam. After building eight years of experience in a salon, Hazel decided to set up her business, offering all aspects of hair and beauty but mainly concentrating on the bridal work she adores. For the shoot, Hazel created three very different styles for each of the three dresses. Working extremely speedily, it was amazing to see the creations she could make in such a short space of time, and that perfectly complemented the line of the gowns. The first look was a volumised sleek Spanish-style bun, with beautiful soft curls around Sam’s face. “I kept it simple as to not counteract the outstanding

detailing of the dress,” explains Hazel. Our second outfit choice saw her creating an intricate rope plait on either side of the head that met at the side and turned into a bohemian bun, with barrel curls pinned in place to finish it off. The last dress gave off a very royal air, inspiring Hazel to make a soft volumised regal bun – simple, sleek and oh so chic.

THE MAKE-UP

A palette of bronze and gold with a hint of moss green captured our autumnal theme perfectly. Arriving with her amazing set of various impressive products, Jade Coates created a striking bridal look for the shoot. After 10 years of being qualified and five years running her own business, Jade knew exactly how to complement the dresses that Sam wore. Jade

Weddings WEST

Autumn 2015_Shoot.indd 57

made some subtle yet beautiful adaptations in between each outfit change, using a soft pink blush to highlight the contours and contrast against Sam’s dark lined eyes. Jade is certainly multi-talented, being qualified in theatrical media make-up as well as hair and wig dressing and, having previously worked with celebrities, is no stranger to making people feel pampered. Without a doubt, she’ll have you looking and feeling your best on the big day!

THE CAKE

Arriving with an incredibly beautiful four-tier pale green cake was Ann Pickard, owner of The Icing Centre. Laced with stunning diamantés and flowers, the detail of this cake was the epitome of what a professional wedding cake should look like. After starting out as a baker

and having her own business for 30 years, it’s evident in Ann’s work that she has a superb eye for detail. Offering a bespoke service, her four-tiered cakes can be made to any flavour and will serve up to 150 people. Using her wonderful skills, cakes can be decorated to match the theme or details from the day, such as the embroidery on the bride’s dress, and can be dressed with fresh, artificial or sugar flowers.

THE FLOWERS

There's a quote on Trug Flowers’ website – "Flowers are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty outweights all the utilities of the world", which is something we definitely agree with! Based in Wrington, Trug Flowers is run by Tara and Scott, two artisan florists with a passion for using flowers to made a special occasion even 57

more so, and who brought a wonderful floral artistry to our shoot. Sam carried a bouquet full of fresh and dainty flowers, including peach and blush pink roses, delicate white and pink peonies and autumnal chrysanthemums, all surrounded by sage and mint green foliage. Gary's single pink rose buttonhole was the perfect subtle complement. Flowers in the same soft colour palette were used in the barns to add beautiful pops of colour; tied on the chiavari chairs in the ceremony room, displayed on the tables in pewter jugs and enhancing the wedding props brought by Saunders Creative.

THE CAR

Philip and Pat of Spirit Wedding Cars arrived in their spectacular 1930s-style Beauford to be greeted with a choir of ‘wows’! From the chrome spindle wheels to the beautifully flowing lines of the fenders, it really was the definition of a classic wedding car, topped off with Champagne-coloured ribbons to match our theme. This family-run company doesn’t just cater for the bride and groom; cars are also supplied for anyone else in the party wishing to arrive in style with one of its uniformed 60

Autumn 2015_Shoot.indd 60

chauffeurs, with the fleet including a second Beauford, a Rolls Royce Silver Spirit and a XJ8 Jaguar in seafrost green.

THE DECORATIONS

Final touches are often underestimated at weddings, but it is amazing how a few simple decorations can really pull the look together. Offering some fantastically distinctive table decorations were Saunders Creative, who crafted them in a fun and unique way. Our table plan was displayed on an old wardrobe mirror, delicate decals adorned glass wine bottles, personalised greeting signs were made with chalkboards and name places used old book pages for a vintage touch. Saunders Creative pride themselves with the individuality of their designs, specialising in decals and using unconventional surfaces to superb effect.

Low key loveliness

Katie Griffiths looks at ways to make your intimate wedding as impressive as its larger cousin

W

ith the average wedding in the UK now costing around £21,000 it’s no surprise that toning down on wedding celebrations is a growing trend. Whether it’s down to budget or simply the fact you want to go for something a little more intimate, a low-key wedding can be just as impressive. And guess what? It’s pretty much guaranteed to keep your inner Bridezilla at bay. As with all elements of your wedding day, it's important to do what you want to do and not what you think you ought to. If you're not the kind of person who feels comfortable in large gatherings, or you're desperate to be wed but don't have cash to splash, then a low key wedding could be the way forward. Celebrities are of course ahead of the trend, with Keira Knightley, Olivia Palermo, Megan Fox and Kate Winslet all opting for a wedding 64

away from the spotlight, with just a handful of guests, so you'd be following in some pretty stylish footsteps. If you’re wondering about the pros and cons of such an event, and are concerned if a low key wedding will be as enjoyable, read on. We spoke with Nicola and Dave Christian who got married in January 2014, and who had the ultimate low key wedding with just 10 people on their guest list. Since their engagement Nicola and Dave were considering all options for their big day, but after their initial guest list came in at 120 they were soon swayed towards a smaller wedding. “When you add up the venue hire, dress, cake and all the other bits that come with a big wedding both Dave and I began to feel overwhelmed,” said Nicola. Selling wedding venues as a job also put

Nicola off organising her own. Seeing brides go through months of stress and the amount of decisions that had to be made, it was clear that a low-key wedding would be the ideal option. After falling pregnant during the planning stages of the wedding it helped to speed the process along. “We wanted to be married before the baby arrived and knowing that we were expecting put everything into perspective. We wanted to save for our future – our future as a family – and there was no way we felt comfortable spending £15,000-£20,000 on one day,” said Nicola. After looking at their guest list again, Nicola and Dave worked out who they really wanted to be with them to witness their vows and join in the celebrations. It came down to their immediate family and long-term friends and there was the added bonus that their friend Pete was a professional photographer and was more than happy to be the official photographer for the day. Nicola and Dave chose a hotel at Henley-onThames with the wedding party tucking into a four-course meal with Champagne for toasts. The big advantage of a smaller wedding party was they were able to give their guests a choice of what they wanted to eat. “The intimacy of having a small wedding meant we could have conversations with all of our family and friends and not feel rushed to move onto the next set of friends. Marrying each other also meant we were marrying into each other’s families and it was important to us that our families got on well and spent quality time together on the day. "The whole process was completely stressfree and was organised in one weekend! My wedding dress cost £70 and Dave wore a blue suit he already owned. Knowing that we

IF YOU’RE INSPIRED BY NICOLA AND DAVE, HERE ARE OUR TOP FIVE TIPS TO PULLING OFF A LOWKEY WEDDING.

1

CONSIDER YOUR GUEST LIST. Nicola and Dave opted for just 10 people, but if you're struggling to reduce your guest list consider having a smaller intimate reception and then a larger party in the evening. This gives you the best of both worlds and still keeps things affordable.

2

PINTEREST IS YOUR PAL. If you’re worried that a low key wedding requires bags of creativity fear not. Pinterest is now one of the biggest resources that brides use to plan their wedding. With pages of ideas and crafty ways to cut costs it’s one of the best resources out there.

3 weren’t spending a fortune with savings still in the bank to spend on our future felt great. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a low key wedding to any bride considering it. Don’t feel pressurised by family and friends to have a big wedding if it’s not really want you want and, more importantly, if it’s going to stretch you financially.” Low key weddings give you the chance to inject some personality into the day, either by choosing a unique location or doing something different that you couldn’t do with a large number of people. Getting hitched doesn’t need to equal huge budgets and as Nicola and Dave proved, the day can be just as special.

USE YOUR FRIENDS. Does one of your friends have a talent for taking really good photos, baking delicious cakes, or have a creative eye to design your wedding invites? Rope your friends in to help out with the things that can cost a fortune.

4

THE RIGHT VENUE IS ESSENTIAL. It’s the main bit so you need to put considerable thought into this. Does your cute local have a private dining area that would work for your reception? Outdoor spaces make great venues too and the natural setting will fit in well with the low-key theme. .

5

BE A BARGAIN HUNTER. For your outfits, check out www.preloved.co.uk, sample sales from your favourite designer and discount wedding outlets, which are all home to beautiful dresses for a fraction of the price.

Bliss on the big screen The West Weddings team has picked out our top ten television and film nuptials. Is your favourite on the list?

1

SCOTT AND CHARLENE, NEIGHBOURS

A true classic – no on-screen wedding countdown is complete without a mention of Ramsay Street’s favourite couple. Yes, we now look back on what Charlene wore and wince at the 80s styling (the lace, the pouffy sleeves, the gyp in her permed hair) but there’s no mistaking the feelings between these two young lovebirds, and the awesome wedding soundtrack of Angry Anderson’s ‘Suddenly’ makes us well up even today.

2

ELIZABETH BENNETT AND MR DARCY, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

There have been many television and film versions of Jane’s classic novel over the years, but the WW favourite is still the 1995 BBC version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. It may take 6 hours for viewers to finally see a kiss between the two but it’s worth it, as Darcy finally marries his lady in a joint ceremony with Jane and Mr Bingley.

3

CARRIE AND MR BIG, SEX AND THE CITY

It took two attempts for this couple to actually tie the knot, but both of their ceremonies are worth a mention: attempt number 1 for Carrie’s gorgeous Vivienne Westwood gown and flamboyant feather hairpiece (“I wore a bird in my hair for him!”) in the awesome

surroundings of the New York public library, and then the beautiful Manolo Blahnik shoes of the second successful ceremony.

4

JANE AND KEVIN, 27 DRESSES

A lovely gown, a gorgeous beachside location – and 29 bridesmaids, in an array of dresses from a Civil War era hooped skirt to a Japanese kimono: this is one visually memorable wedding. It’s also a 70

triumphant moment for serial bridesmaid Jane when she finally gets to be the bride and take the starring role.

It was a teenage wedding but the old folks wished them well, with Bella saying her vows in a simply stunning (Carolina Herrera-designed) lace and sheer backed wedding dress, all set in a beautiful woodland glade. Just don’t mention her prior nightmare wedding that concluded with a lot of blood and dead bodies.

5

7

BERNARD AND LYDIA, FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL

Any one of the four weddings in this Brit classic would be worth a mention, but we chose Bernard and Lydia on the basis that their priest is hilarious (“do you take this woman to be your awful wedded wife?”) and the post-wedding scene with Hugh Grant stuck in a cupboard in the honeymoon suite still makes us laugh twenty years on.

THE PONTIPEE BROTHERS AND THEIR BRIDES, SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS

This 1954 musical will get your toes tapping and a cluster of catchy songs stuck in your head as the story unfolds of Adam Pontipee and his six brothers, who decide to find wives in a somewhat unorthodox manner. It turns out all for the best but we advise not to try this at home, guys.

Marshall has a disastrous hair cut, the photographer doesn’t show up, there are no flowers and the harpist is in labour, but our favourite American sitcom couple tie the knot under a tree in front of their closest friends, with Barney as an unlikely officiant.

9

MARIA AND THE CAPTAIN, THE SOUND OF MUSIC

It’s only a brief scene in the middle of the film, but Maria’s wedding to Captain von Trapp makes the list for the beautiful smile on Julie Andrew’s face as the nuns arrange her dress, and for the truly showstopping cathedral length train and veil she wears for the occasion.

10

ANNIE AND BRIAN, FATHER OF THE BRIDE

We’ve spent 100 minutes watching Steve Martin trying to come to terms with (and failing miserably) his daughter getting married, but in the best rom-com traditions it all comes together at the end. George walks Annie down the aisle, and she’s wearing the pair of trainers he custom-made for her.

T

rue love – the kind that makes two people say ‘I do’ – has been around for thousands of years, but the way people choose to plan their wedding day has changed considerably over time. Organising a wedding can still be a challenge, but the digital options available today can make the whole process a lot more practical and fun. With increasingly fast broadband connection and Wi-Fi, you can now sort out every detail of your big day by simply using your smartphone or tablet. What better excuse to plan your nuptials on your lunch break, browsing through suppliers’ websites or sharing your favourite links on social media? And who can even remember what wedding planning was like before the likes of Pinterest and Instagram? If technology can help with shopping, travelling and banking, then it’s time to make the most of what it can offer for organising your nuptials.

CLEVER COMMUNICATION In the digital age, the possibilities are endless – busy couples can simply hit the

app store for alternative ways to keep on top of the checklist, organise appointments, look for inspiration and much more. Your smart device can be your ‘go to’ wedding organiser and tracking tool, rather than the usual heavy paper folders, especially with clever applications such as Wedding Planner, Wedding UK, Wedding Spot and Wedding Countdown to name but a few. Trying to sort out your table plan? Check out Wedding Table Planner and the Room Planner by Chief Architect, both of which can help to visualise the layout of your venue by virtually moving things around. Wouldn’t it

be great if you could experiment with colours and shapes and collate your favourite for each aspect of your day onto a different moodboard? Well, now you can with apps such as Wedding Flowers Moodboard, The Colour Genius and Wedding Hairstyles. These apps allow you to have fun creating inspirational boards and lookbooks, which can then be shared with suppliers and other people involved.

VIRTUAL PLANNING SESSIONS When your bridesmaids live hundreds of miles away, or even on a different continent, and you have family 73

members scattered across the globe, arranging a planning session would be impossible without programmes such as Skype and Google Drive. The former allows users to make video calls, send live messages and have a good catch up over a cup of tea, while the latter is great for sharing documents and enables your chosen group to keep track, add and review ideas. Moreover, thanks to Tie the Knot you can actually design your own app to send to the guests in order to keep them up to date with your developments and share your excitement. For the super techy couples, one increasingly popular way to spread the word about your upcoming nuptials is to create a wedding website.

74

Autumn 2015_Beinspired.indd 74

Thanks to site builders such as Weebly, Wix and Wordpress, you can set up a simple announcement webpage with information about the date and venue, or go all out and create an interactive site with blogs, photo updates, announcements and communication portals. For some people this is now even replacing traditional paper invites.

DOCUMENTING THE DAY While some couples are open to the idea of live-streaming their wedding through Skype or Facebook for friends and family unable to make it in person, this is not always possible if the venue doesn’t have Wi-Fi. Instead, create movie clips of the day through Vine to send to absent guests. For photos, try WedPics or Wedding Party – all-in-one photo apps that can replace having cameras at the reception for your guests. People can take photos on their phone, put together slideshows and even leave messages for the couple. You can also create your own special wedding day hashtag (#exciting!) and invite guests to share their photos on Instagram and Twitter on and after the big day. Whatever your prior experience in the digital world, it’s so easy to make organising your wedding successful and stress-free with the help of creative planning, while the right technology resources will make your wedding even more memorable.

ne minute you’re on the busy A38 towards Somerset, the next you’re on a quiet sun-dappled country lane listening to the birds, seeing rows of vines stretching into the distance. Aldwick Court Farm & Vineyard really is a little piece of rural heaven, but one that is very handily located just outside Bristol. The farm has been in the same family for five generations, and is currently owned by Sandy Luck. As a venue it’s a pleasing blend of old and new, with the seventeenth century ‘Old Barn’ perfectly complemented by the 2013 ‘New Barn’. The two are interconnected by a glass and wooden reception area and play host to your meal and ceremony separately, with a spacious bar tucked at the back. Light, bright and airy, the New Barn can hold up 180 for a sit down meal and up to 220 for an evening reception. Its large windows look out onto the beautiful gardens and fields, and it’s one of those rooms that you can easily put your own style and stamp on for the day.

Weddings WEST

Autumn 2015_Venues 2.indd 77

Aldwick’s vineyards were planted in 2008 and 2010 and are now the largest in Somerset, producing white, rosé and sparkling wine. And having been lucky enough to taste some of the latest vintages, I can confirm that they would be an excellent addition to your wedding breakfast! The other nuptial advantage to working vineyards is that they provide a superb backdrop for your wedding photographs – my recommendation is to climb to the top of the Woodlands vineyard to capture stunning views of the Mendips framed by leaves and grapes. For a wedding, Aldwick’s delicious wines are accompanied by Taste Buds catering, a Bristol-based family run company. As well as providing the full gamut of wedding food, from fork buffets to sit down banquets, Taste Buds also offers 5, 6 or 7-tier wedding cheesecakes, stacked full of sumptuous local gems such as Lyecross smoked, Somerset camembert and Godminster peppered brie. Wine and cheese, the perfect combination – what better symbol for your wedding?

here’s a growing awareness that one of the happiest days of your life shouldn’t be at the expense of the environment, and a number of local venues are tapping into this desire to keep their celebrations as low-impact as possible. We’ve brought together a selection of venues that are flying the flag for eco-friendly weddings, whether that’s through the food they source, the way the building is run or rewarding you for turning up powered by your own steam!

SUNNY SOMERSET With two licensed indoor locations plus a third in the form of an outdoor oak gazebo, all set in 25 acres of glorious Somerset countryside, the Longhouse at Bruton is a truly beautiful location. The Longhouse itself was built to very high specifications using sustainable materials, and has geothermic heating, solar panels for some of its power and rainwater harvesting, all of which contributed to it winning a Green Apple award for environmental architecture.

BARN-STORMING Winkworth Farm in Wiltshire has two barns for you to choose from for your wedding, the Long Barn for 150 guests or the Threshing Barn for 200 guests. This venue has some serious eco-credentials: there’s rainwater harvesting for the toilets, the barn was restored using local craftsmen and reclaimed materials and it uses 100% renewable energy, plus there’s a charming gesture that for every wedding held, a native sapling is planted, so you can ensure your wedding footprint stays nice and small. The venue’s four recommended caterers also use local, fairtrade and organic produce where possible.

The venue also has an unusual stone circle which is available for handfastings, which are pagan wedding ceremonies. As to be expected on a farm, the food you’ll be served up is a big deal, with a number of the farms next to Huntstile supplying your wedding breakfast with seasonal and organic produce. There’s

Offering plenty of outdoor space for a marquee or campingbased reception, you also get five handcrafted wagons for you and your guests to stay in, a handcrafted bar shelter, an eco toilet and shower wagon, firepits and much more. It’s not a licensed venue, but does offer the option for blessings and humanist ceremonies as well as your reception. ECO-LUXE The stunning main house at Elmore Court has sections dating back to Elizabethan times, but it’s the newest arrival to the estate, the Gillyflower, that piques our eco-interest. This is a gorgeous reception venue that was built with sustainable materials and methods – the walls were made from rammed earth taken from the estate. The venue provides all its own heating through a biomass boiler and its own woodland, and also grows an increasing number of fruit and veg in its gardens, so given enough time, it can grow the food for your reception to order! After all these years… Matt Lewis takes a trip down memory lane to revisit the newly-refurbished Aztec Hotel and Spa in Bristol

T

he Aztec Hotel and Spa holds a special place in the hearts of my wife and I as we had our wedding reception here over 17 years ago. My sister-in-law and brother-in-law also had their wedding reception here a few years later as they loved ours so much, and we’ve made many return visits on various occasions. But there are two questions that recently came to mind. Firstly, where did the time go? Can it really be 17 years since we tied the knot? The six foot tall 14-year-old son who looks vaguely like his father shows evidence that this must be the case, along with my grey hair. The second and much more interesting question is, how does the Aztec look and feel today after its recent refurbishment? Does it still have that wow factor that we felt all those years ago? What surprised us at the time of our wedding was that what you saw when you arrived at the hotel was so different from what you saw when you stepped inside. You were transported into an almost medieval feel of old beams, high ceilings and rough stone walls - there were even tapestries! It made for an almost fairytale day whilst being very much in a modern building (no creaky doors and drafts here). So has the money spent made that impression greater than before? The answer is a resounding yes. The beams and the stone walls and the intimacy are still 80

Autumn 2015_Venues 2.indd 80

there in bucketfuls, and the whole building is alive with character and charm meaning that you immediately feel at home and welcomed. What has changed are the furnishings and the decor. In the main public areas the colours are now bright and contemporary, yet restrained, and an air of civilised grandeur envelops you. I was pleased to see that one thing is still the same, the quality and variety of the food and drink served here. Whether it’s fine dining in the excellent restaurant or evening wedding buffet, the Aztec will cater to any requirements to the highest standard. During our stay we experienced a first-class meal in its restaurant, which has been awarded an AA rosette. From our South West appetisers that included produce from a host of local suppliers, to honey-glazed breast of duck with sweet potato puree and homemade sticky toffee pudding, this was a meal to truly remember. Up to 150 guests can be catered for in the restaurant for a sumptuous wedding breakfast, and in the evening up to 250 family and friends can be accommodated. For more intimate celebrations there are a number of function rooms available to suit any party size that you require. As this is a luxury four star hotel there are plenty of rooms available for guests who want to stay the night and party late into the evening. All rooms have been upgraded

as part of the refurbishment, with some including wet rooms as well as state of the art bathrooms, and your guests can choose from deluxe rooms, lakeside rooms with balconies or luxury suites. Guests also have access to the fantastic swimming pool, sauna, steam room and gym facilities. For that special pampering treat the hotel spa has a range of treatments and relaxing programmes for women and men, and even special bridal makeover sessions if you want to be thoroughly spoilt on your wedding day! For a special hen do the Girls Night In package is the ultimate treat; stay in a luxury room and enjoy complimentary use of the spa facilities, goodie bags, rom-com movies, tasty nibbles and cocktails. What really made our wedding wasn’t just the venue but also the staff -- on the day itself and in the planning -- and today the Aztec’s events team still focuses on making every wedding just as special as ours was, and an event that you and your guests will never forget. Overall we were as impressed today as we have ever been; the staff are all highly professional, attentive and friendly, while the refurbishment has just enhanced an already superb offer. The Aztec still offers a fantastic venue to celebrate your big day, and while it’s true that everywhere is unique, some places are more unique than others.

“This is the moment Louis and I sneaked out into the garden, while our guests were still enjoying the reception, and we literally jumped for joy – more than once! Following the pre-ceremony nerves, the emotional vows and speeches, it felt amazing to finally relax, take time to soak in the atmosphere and celebrate that we were husband and wife. Everything had gone to plan – we had all our family and friends with us, the venue looked fantastic and the sun was shining, and now we could look forward to spending the rest of our lives together. ” Weddings WEST
