A SNOWY SCENE

It was during a ski holiday to Les Deux Alpes that turned an average lunch with friends into the day to remember for Emily and Liam – and becoming a very special moment for the couple. Emily and her friend had been moaning about how their legs were aching – who knew skiing was such intense exercise?! and that they wanted to head back to the chalet. However, Liam and the boys had other ideas and persuaded them to stay out for the afternoon. Just a short time later, Liam asked Emily to take a picture with him on the edge of the slopes, which was slightly strange Emily recalls, as Liam hated getting his picture taken. But she went along with it, blissfully unaware of what was about

Hen parties are a tricky topic. From the guest list to whose job it is to organise, it’s already complicated enough – without having to find an activity to suit everyone. But it needn’t be that way, especially with the excellent events from Bristol’s Aztec Hotel & Spa. The hotel offers two fantastic packages to suit either a girls’ night in or out, with accommodation included. The first includes everything you’d need for the best slumber party – think DVDs, popcorn and jugs of cocktails. There’s even sharing platters to tuck into and the use of the hotel’s spa facilities. Looking to dress to impress? Go for the girls’ night out, where you’ll start your evening with dinner and cocktails in the bar, before heading back to your room for the sleepover. There’s also the chance to have a good

sing-along at one of the hotel’s tribute nights, which feature cover acts for the likes of Motown and The Bee Gees. The entertainment is accompanied by a threecourse meal and half a bottle of wine each, as well as hotdogs at midnight. HAVE A WINNING WEDDING

Aldwick Court Farm & Vineyard was named Best Wedding Venue 2017 at the Bristol and Somerset Awards Photos: Christo Nicolle (below) and Sam Gibson (top right)

PROMOTION

IT’S been a long-held belief of the newlyweds who have married at this picturesque venue, and now it looks like it’s official: Aldwick Court Farm & Vineyard is the Best Wedding Venue for 2017.

The 17th century farm, which sits just off the A38 on the outskirts of Bristol, was recently crowned the winner at the Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards. Launched more than four years ago, the awards recognise outstanding wedding suppliers throughout the south west, as well as raise funds for the Wedding Wishing Well charity. Managing director Sandy Luck, venue manager Rob Lewis, and events and weddings coordinator Sarah Warren attended the awards evening in February, which was held at DoubleTree by Hilton. “We were absolutely thrilled when they announced that we’d won Best Wedding Venue,” said Sandy, “especially since the

judging takes into consideration feedback from clients. Clearly a large percentage of our 2016 newlyweds went to great effort to offer praise for their special day at Aldwick. Their satisfaction is what really matters. In fact, there can be no greater reward for all our efforts than the handwritten thank you messages in which team members are personally singled out by name for their contribution.” And it’s really no surprise that the venue came out on top. Aldwick Court Farm has two adjacent stone barns, which are linked by a stunning oak-floored reception area, a brick-walled cellar bar, and courtyards overlooking beautiful gardens. If that’s not enough, the venue offers panoramic views over the surrounding vineyard – perfect for those all-important wedding shots. DON’T LET YOUR INNER BRIDEZILLA RUN WILD FEEL yourself turning green and terrorising your friends? Make sure you check out these tips on how to avoid becoming the dreaded bridezilla... First of all, remember that it’s YOUR big day. No, that doesn’t mean that everything should be about you, it means we guarantee that no one else (aside from your groom, obviously) will care as much about the day as you. And that’s fine. Don’t get sucked in by the flashy celebrity wedding – we’re looking at you, Kim Kardashian. While it might look amazing on Instagram to have individually placed pearls on all the tables or bridesmaids that look identical, at the end of the day it probably won’t affect how much fun you’ll have and it’ll help you stick within your budget. Remember the reason for your wedding. When you’re knee-deep in tulle and hand-writing your place settings it can be hard to distinguish the important details

from extra flourishes. Make sure you keep the focus on your love as a couple and you’re bound to gain some perspective. None of these tips helping calm the nerves and excitement? Take a break! Go on a pre-wedding weekend away, book a massage or just slob out in front of the TV – anything to take your mind off it. And yes, that means no watching Say Yes To The Dress... If you’re struggling to talk yourself down off that decorating ledge, consider handing the whole thing over to a professional wedding planner – they’re trained to handle the stress without turning into a monster. Probably. And finally, accept that something will very likely go wrong at some point. From missing wedding favours to a no-show guest, it’s inevitable. But if you decide to have fun regardless of what happens – yes, even if you rip the dress – it’ll help you chill out during the planning process. After all, the only thing that’s important is that you both enjoy the day.

Celebrate your wedding in luxury and opulence at this 500-year-old castle, once enjoyed by King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Charitable occasion Looking for a pre-loved gown for your wedding day?

WHEN it comes to your wedding day there are a few ways you can ensure you stick to that budget – most importantly with your bridal gown. Of course, every bride wants to look and feel special but there’s no reason you have to spend a small fortune on doing so.

Thankfully, local charity St Peter’s Hospice, which runs specialist Bridal Rooms within its Nailsea and Westburyon-Trym shops, can help you out on the big day. There you’ll find an excellent selection of pre-loved wedding gowns, as well as solutions for all other aspects of the wedding day, including bridesmaid dresses, occasion wear for guests, accessories and shoes. The shops offer savvy brides-to-be topquality bridal items at a fraction of what they’d usually cost.

FULL OF TREASURES Victoria Canavan, from St Peter’s Hospice, said: “Our Bridal Rooms offer wonderful treasures for a big day, without breaking the bank. “Weddings are hugely costly so anything couples can do to help their budget is so worthwhile and we guarantee that only the best quality items will make it onto our shop floor. “Everything from the clothes and accessories to the decorations and finishing touches have usually only ever been used once, so the quality is fantastic and the price is even better. “We have a wide range of bridal gowns on offer, and they start from as little as £50. And, what’s better, some have never even been worn! “As always our Bridal Rooms rely on generous donations from the public and

we would greatly appreciate any gowns, bridesmaid dresses, mother-of-the-bride outfits, accessories and vintage goods that people may want to find a new home for.” So, if you’ve occasion wear that you know you’ll never wear again, or a wedding dress that you’re sick of seeing gather dust at the back of your wardrobe, why not stop by one the shops?

As Bristol’s only adult hospice, St Peter’s Hospice cares for more than 2,670 patients each year as well as supporting family members. 126 High Street, Nailsea, Bristol, BS48 1AH, 01275 810703 12 Canford Lane, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, BS9 3DH, 0117 9592768 stpetershospice.org.uk

BRIDAL GOWNS:

ALL ABOUT EVE

Clockwise from main: Kenneth Winston designs in styles 1746, 1744, 1738, and 1748

All About Eve Bridalwear 28 High Street, Chepstow, Monmouthshire, NP16 5LJ T: 01291 629338 E: chepstow@allaboutevebridalwear.com www.allaboutevebridalwear.com

AT All About Eve Bridalwear there’s a gown to suit every bride. Its Chepstow store stocks the likes of Pronovias, Essence of Australia, Jesus Peiro and Maggie Sottero. And now, there’s even more choice with the new styles from designer Kenneth Winston, which will land in-store this July... Kenneth Winston has become a master of the dressmaking craft. From A-line ball gowns encrusted with 30,000 crystal beads to all-over lace trumpet silhouettes, his designs highlight a fine

expertise in pattern making. But with such a selection, which should you choose?

EMBROIDERY DETAILS This delicate look (style 1746) starts with the base embroidery pattern, rather than the crystal beading, and uses various clear, metallic, and high-sheen white threading. The pattern follows the body’s natural contouring lines, while the pearls and beads act like an artist’s shading.

ILLUSION COLLAR Rather than literally creating a bridal “choker”, this design (style 1744) creates a high-neck illusion collar, which mimics a

jewelled necklace of crystals and pearls.

GO BOHEMIAN This dress (style 1738) is a perfect take on the popular vintage bohemian chic that many brides favour – but with hidden bodice boning to flatter the figure.

SEQUINS ALL OVER Sequins: it’s a bridal trend that seems unable to decide whether it wants to stay or go. Style 1748 uses clear sequins for understated sparkle, and sexy low back with a satin underlay for modesty.

In the picture WHILE the memories of your special day might be a little hazy (blame all that champagne), your wedding photographs will last a lifetime – so you’ll want to make sure they’re up-to-scratch. And when it comes to wedding photographers there are thousands, so how do you go about finding the right person for you? Photographer Steve Elliott has shot hundreds of weddings and gives his top tips for making your wedding picture perfect…

ASK FOR ADVICE

Most couples are more than happy to tell you their experiences, whether it was good or bad. Failing that, the venue will likely have its favourite photographers to work with and the wedding planner will be able to advise you. While Facebook and other social media sites might look good, don’t always trust what you see. Likes can be bought and photos stolen, which is a regular occurrence these days. Don’t overlook semi-professionals either.

54 for

They might have a 9-to-5 job, but they’re often just as talented.

CHEAPER IS RARELY BETTER If you want stylish and captivating photographs, you aren’t likely to get these from someone who charges a pittance. Don’t forget a professional photographer won’t just be working for you that day – after all, those pictures don’t edit themselves. Don’t expect your photographer to do a 13-hour shooting day for a couple of hundred quid. These are professionals who have trained for years, invested thousands in equipment and websites and will invest their dedication in your day too.

DON’T LEAVE IT TOO LATE TO BOOK

We already have weddings booked in for 2018 and 2019! The longer you leave it the less chance you’ve got of getting your first choice photographer and quite possibly even second and third choice.

BE REALISTIC

There’s only so much airbrushing your

WEST WEDDINGS | PAGE 19

photographer can do. If you marry in a city centre registry office, it’s never going to look like a beautiful Welsh castle. Make sure you’re open to your photographer’s ideas, it might sound crazy at the time but they know what they’re doing. They understand what’s needed to get the best out of you and the environment, and it’s worth remembering the reason you pay them so much is because they know exactly what to do.

beautiful pictures – and a sincere smile can outshine even the worst weather on the day. On that note, don’t be surprised if the photographer is dancing with joy if it’s slightly overcast on your wedding day. While you might want to cry when the sun

decides to briefly hide behind a cloud, the photographer will understand it’s about the right lighting. Those that know will be praying for just a little cloud at the right time, before they take the shot!

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to start scouring through portfolios to find a photographer with the perfect style of work to match your dream wedding day...

ASK THE AWKWARD QUESTIONS

A good photographer will have all the answers ready and prepared and, more importantly, if they don’t know they’ll be honest. Ask about insurance, payment protection and what happens if they’re ill on your big day. It’s also worth getting proper contact details, not just a mobile number and email address, as well as a written contract. No photographer will mind you phoning and just having a chat about your day either – even if it’s the third call on the same question. It’s all part of the service.

GO WITH A PHOTOGRAPHER YOU LIKE

In the end, it’s important to choose someone who puts you at ease when you’re in front of their camera. You’ll almost certainly be spending an awful lot of time with them on your wedding day and if you don’t like them, it will really show in your pictures. Everyone knows that being relaxed is often the secret to

HOW TO NAIL YOUR

BEST MAN’S SPEECH

Recently been appointed the best man? Yes, it might sound fun at first, but the role comes with many responsibilities. When the stag do is over it’s time to plan that speech...

Rule number one: don’t talk about the stag do. There’s no need to bring up what drunken antics the groom’s friends coaxed him into doing at 3am in front of his great aunt. Save that one for the lads’ catch-ups.

Secondly, be polite and don’t ruin your well thought-out speech with swearing. It’s supposed to be an elegant affair so in the words Ron Burgundy, stay classy. Compliment the bride. A lot of best men go down the route of taking the mick and it’s just not the time. She’s either exhausted, ecstatic or emotional (or a mixture of all three) and who knows how that ‘witty’ one-liner about her dress will go down. Keep it light and keep it funny and you’re guaranteed a laugh and applause at the end. If you’re wondering how to start off the speech, try a joke and a fact that leads onto a funny anecdote or story about

...DON’T TALK ABOUT THE STAG DO – THERE’S NO NEED TO BRING UP WHAT DRUNKEN ANTICS THE GROOM’S FRIENDS COAXED HIM INTO DOING AT 3AM IN FRONT OF HIS GREAT AUNT

THE best man’s speech is one of the top attractions of the day (apart from the dress and the first dance, of course) so it’s an important moment to get right. We’ve pulled together some basic handy hints to get the ball rolling and now it’s up to you to let your creative sparks fly.

your friendship with the groom. The humour will grab everyone’s attention and the sentiment will keep it. Keep it short and sweet – around 10 minutes is perfect. You’ll want to keep everyone chuckling throughout and not start snoring at the back. If you get the momentum right it will be all right on the night.

DOING YOUR DUTY

If it’s your first time being best man you might be wondering what your duties actually are – aside from giving a hilarious-yet-sentimental speech. Let us shed some light... Congratulations, you have now been hired as the groom’s personal assistant! If he needs help, you’re his man, whether it’s packing advice to pre-wedding jitters, you’re by his side. Arrange (and style) the other groomsmen’s formal wear, and perhaps even the groom’s suit as well, depending on how style-conscious your friend is. Everyone’s outfits are

meant to complement each other so go shopping armed with an idea of the colour scheme, the groom’s suit and the bridesmaids’ dresses. One of the most important responsibilities is keeping hold of the wedding rings and making sure they don’t get lost before the ceremony (eek!). It might be worth triple-checking that your pockets don’t have holes in right about now... And onto the fun parts, it’s officially your duty to decorate the getaway vehicle: we’re talking tin cans, ribbons and everything and anything else that makes noise. Grab your groomsmen and a few bridesmaids and go wild. And finally, of course, it usually falls to the best man to organise the stag do. Whether you’re going for an all-out lads holiday abroad or a cheap-and-cheerful mission, be sure to run your plans past the bride-to-be beforehand. It’s also worth coming up with a plan of action for bars and restaurants. You’ll want a vague idea of where to direct 20 tipsy stags.

Crowning glory

Take advice from Matthew Curtis, the lead stylist on Britain's Next Top Model STRAPLESS AND HIGHNECKED GOWNS? More often with a strapless dress, brides go for loose hair that cascades down the back, or an elegant half-up style for the best of both worlds. Intricate details on weddings dresses that run high up to the neck always call for a hair up-do, but when more skin is on show a looser style always looks gorgeous.

WHERE SHOULD I LOOK FOR BRIDAL HAIR INSPIRATION?

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO COMPLEMENT THE POPULAR SWEETHEART NECKLINE? Sweetheart necklines call for up-dos or styles that drape elegantly behind and down the back. Avoid styling and gathering the hair around the neckline itself as this will create a very busty look, which isn’t ideal for your wedding day.

DOES THE SAME HAIRSTYLE APPLY FOR

Searching hashtags, such as #bridalhair, on social media will return a plethora of inspiration for your big day, but make sure you remain open-minded to new suggestions from your stylist as sometimes you can be set on a look that doesn’t necessarily suit your face shape or gown. It’s best to book trials with a handful of bridal hairstylists so you can shortlist who understands your style, likes and dislikes best, and who you have the best relationship with. It’s important that your wedding hairstylist will give you honest advice, as well as be realistic about what they can achieve for you on your big day.

WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD I INVEST IN DURING THE RUN UP? Having great hair is about more than just products and the key is to begin well in advance of your wedding day, by ensuring it’s in the best condition possible. Keep up with regular trims – having just the ends dusted off if you’re aiming to grow it longer. This will ensure that, whether you’re wearing your hair up or flowing loosely, it will look healthy and thick with no split ends tainting the finished look. In the run up to the big day treat hair with nourishing masks and creams to ensure it’s in optimum condition for the day itself.

WHAT IF MY HAIRSTYLE WON’T LAST THE DAY? The key is all in ensuring you select the right styling products to prepare and prime the hair for a long-lasting look. Also make sure that you set and cool accordingly, depending on you’re style, such as waves and pin curls. Finally, select

DON’T BE AFRAID TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX WHEN IT COMES TO ACCESSORIES – JEWELLERY, BROOCHES, COMBS AND EVEN SELF-CRAFTED EMBELLISHMENTS ARE REFRESHINGLY ORIGINAL AND WILL CREATE A COOL, ONE-OF-A-KIND LOOK

a strong lacquer as this will allow flexible movement without compromising on memory and hold.

ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS ON HAIR ACCESSORY TRENDS OR NEW WAYS TO WEAR ACCESSORIES? Brides are starting to wear accessories through the longer lengths of their hair, such as tucked into braids and intertwined into lengthier plaits. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to accessories – jewellery, brooches, combs and even self-crafted embellishments are refreshingly original and will create a cool, one of a kind look. How to keep your wedding on trend this summer Summer is finally here and with it comes a bunch of new wedding ideas, from industrial chic to the most popular colour of the year... ANOTHER season brings with it a new batch of proposals, a social calender filled with hen parties and evenings spent planning, not to mention the weddings themselves. And each year there are certain trends that prove more popular than most – check out our roundup of latest ideas to know...

GO GREEN

Last year saw lots of all-white weddings, with blush overtones. But 2017 is altogether more colourful, with green named as Pantone’s colour of the year. The exact shade is fresh and

zesty yellow-green and symbolises new beginnings. Think huge tumbling foliage installations in the ceiling, foliage tie-backs and Astroturf bars. Counterbalance this by using soft voile fabric and fairy lights to create a magical midsummer night’s dream effect.

PIMP YOUR DRINK

More and more couples are edging away from the traditional three-course sitdown meal for a more fun, spontaneous experience. You’ll find plenty of dining options that let your guests be more interactive, such as ‘design your own pizza carts’ and this idea for a ‘pimp your prosecco bar’. You set up the bar with all the added extras – we’re thinking Prosecco, fruit and fruit juice, plus various types of bowls, pitchers and decorations – and let your guests design their own drinks.

THE MIDAS TOUCH

The best way to give a neutral colour palette, such as one made up of greys and creams, the ‘wow’ factor is to pair it with multiple textures and shimmering metallics. Many brides find themselves with a simple background – often dictated by their venue – and

it’s easy to add flashes of drama with gold, metallic, copper, rose gold or pewter highlights. Your overall theme is guaranteed to match, while giving the room the midas touch will add a touch of luxury to please every bride.

NEVER-ENDING FEASTS

In keeping with a ‘pimp your prosecco bar’, you’ll want to pair your DIY drinking with a bohemian buffet, where everyone can eat until their heart’s content – right up until the clock strikes twelve. Think mounds of foods piled up on one long table and let your guests help themselves. This is particularly good if you’re forgoing the usual wedding structure and want to serve food once the dancing has already started. Also rising in popularity are late-night snacks (to soak up all that champagne), which could be anything from cheese toasties to bacon butties. Whatever you serve, they’re bound to go down a treat. We’re already looking forward to those

midnight munchies as a break from all the dancing...

INDUSTRIAL THEMES

Industrial loft apartments are forever popular, and the look is filtering across into the wedding scene too. Give your décor an edgy element with the use of traditionally utilitarian materials, such as scaffolding tables, pallet furniture and hessian covers. This look works beautifully when contrasted with soft textures – use furs on the rustic wooden pallet furniture.

Give your event the professional touch

Pearl & Pear, from Holly Clark and Sarah Kay, has the secret to making your evening do Instagram-worthy SOMETIMES we all need a little help bringing our event ideas, no matter how big or small, to life. Pearl & Pear – founded by industry experts Holly Clark and Sarah Kay – is the new online treasure chest with the tools to help do that effortlessly. With help from its specially curated suppliers, the site recently put together a Dolce Vitastyle wedding reception in Puglia. Here the pair share their tips for making it a truly Instagram-able event...

WHERE DO WE START?

When planning a theme the best place to start is thinking about what you and your guests connect with most – be that an era, a concept, place or even a colour – if people have an emotional connection it makes the impact of the theme so much stronger. Once you have that, consider the overall impact of the event – how will the space look when you walk into it? If there are high ceilings balloons or bunting would work well, for smaller more intimate spaces it may be more about the lighting. The next stage is to think about the details – those little touches are what people remember and the moments that make them smile.

the stress away from you, ensure that everything runs smoothly and on the day will allow you to be a guest at your own event. They work with the best suppliers so know who will deliver – meaning there won’t be any last-minute issues of the DJ you found on Google not arriving – or at least if there are, they’ll find a solution before you even know it happened!

WHAT’S THE ONE DETAIL THAT PULLS AN EVENT TOGETHER?

The atmosphere is so important to consider – how will the event feel? Thinking through this is vital. Music, lighting and the little details are the key elements, alongside the food and drinks. Your guests ultimately bring the atmosphere with them but having a wellthought-out plan for the event, so that it runs smoothly and no-one has to think about anything all night – whether that’s where to get a drink or where they can sit to eat – certainly helps. Picture the event at every stage as this will allow you to work through any potential issues or forgotten areas.

WHY CHOOSE A PROFESSIONAL PLANNER?

Photos: Holly Clark Photography, Pearl & Pear

AN EVENT PROFESSIONAL IS VERY FAMILIAR WITH PLANNING EVENTS SO WILL BE ABLE TO ADVISE ON WHERE TO SPEND MONEY, AND CRUCIALLY WHERE TO SAVE...

The benefit is that you can focus purely on the fun parts of the event and the logistics, such as your guest list and what food is on the menu. Your event planner looks at the bigger picture – pulling together all the suppliers and handling the nitty-gritty logisitics, such as power, lighting and sound. An event professional is very familiar with planning weddings so will be able to advise on where to spend money, and crucially where to save. They will also take all
