For over 50 years, SUNY Brockport has provided local school districts with an enriching Swim N’Gym program to help elementary-aged special
Program, one of the most prestigious offered in the country. The program serves two purposes: providing the college’s PE students invaluable experience working with the special needs population as well as offering specialized physical education opportunities to children in the community.

during their junior year, and area school districts can sign up to have their students participate.
Amaury Samalot-Rivera, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor with an area of concentration in Adaptive Physical Education. He came to SUNY Brockport in 2013 and has been working with the Swim N’Gym program for the past seven years.
According to Dr. SamalotRivera, PE students coach in the Swim N’Gym program as part of their Intro to Adaptive PE class. This program benefits college students by providing opportunities to work with children with disabilities and special needs in a Phys Ed context. “It is a good opportunity for them to identify if they would like to work with this population in their career,” said Dr. Samalot-Rivera. The college has 60 PE students per semester participating in this program, and, on average, 10 to 12 will go on to specialize in the Adaptive Phys Ed field. “This provides firsthand experience putting theory into practice,” he said.
districts provide their students with transportation to SUNY Brockport. The college provides the venue, the coaches, the equipment, and the specialized program. The teachers stay while their students are engaged in the Swim N’Gym program but are hands-off.
The Swim N’Gym program is offered on Friday mornings in the spring and fall, with each semester being six to eight weeks long. Participating school
Lauren Kessler is the Special Education Lead Teacher at Spencerport Central School District. She has been bringing her special needs students aged five to 11 to this program for 10 years. The students are often on the autism spectrum or have social/emotional disabilities. “The students really enjoy it. They constantly ask if it is Friday yet for Swim N’Gym,” Kessler chuckled.
For the swimming portion of the program, the children utilize the college’s main pool. Aquatic floaties and suitable equipment are provided for all abilities and levels. Pool skill assessments are done, and the coaches help the students throughout the semester as they work to improve their swimming abilities. They also play pool games such as ball retrieving and sharks and minnows. Kessler especially appreciates the swimming program. “This could help save their life,” she said.
During the gym component of the program, the children use three of the gyms at the college to work on fitness and motor skills. There is also a quiet gym for children with sensory input issues. There is special equipment for sensory students and adaptive equipment to help all children be successful in the environment. The gym component of the program begins with the Phys Ed students evaluating the children for various elements such as running, endurance, flexibility, and hand-eye coordination. The coach then collaborates with the student to work on improving their skills. Fun and engaging stations such as soccer, baseball, cornhole, scooters, and more help keep the children motivated. “The coaches are very encouraging,” said Lauren.
The semester ends with an extra special day of fun. In the fall, there is a Halloween event with a child-friendly haunted house. The spring semester ends with ice skating. “All 19 of my students go, and they all love it!” exclaimed Lauren.
“The Swim N’Gym program is mutually beneficial to both our Phys Ed students as well as the community,” said Dr. Samalot-Rivera. “We have been doing this for many years and hope to continue for many more. It is a wonderful experience for everyone involved, and I am happy to be part of the program.”
Families in western Monroe County who want more information on the Swim N’Gym program should contact their local school district. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County (CCE Monroe) has partnered with Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and the Monroe County Legislature to support local organizations dedicated to fighting food insecurity. The Food Insecurity Project strengthens food-based organizations by providing essential resources that address immediate food needs while fostering long-term food security. The project’s mission is to help people get food today and plant the seeds for them to be able to ensure their own sustainable food security going forward.
Since its launch, the Food Insecurity Project has supported over 17 organizations with over $40,000 in direct assistance, enabling them to enhance operations and expand their impact. Support included food safety equipment, garden supplies, outreach materials, and educational resources for residents.
The 2025 Food Insecurity Project is underway, and applications for support are now open. Eligible organizations may receive assistance with equipment purchases (e.g., shelving, refrigerators, freezers), facility repairs (e.g., ramps, stairs), and hygiene products (e.g., toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products). While direct financial assistance and employment stipends cannot be provided, organizations may receive up to $10,000 in purchased goods and materials. Being in the garden is always a sensory experience, but have you intentionally added plants to your landscape to create a special fragrance, touch, or taste? It is not unusual to see a sensory garden planted for public enjoyment, but you can easily heighten the sensory experience of both your ornamental and vegetable plantings by considering plants that are especially appealing to the senses.
Sensory gardens help connect us to nature by providing engaging sights, sounds, smells, scents, and tastes. Educators at the University of Illinois Extension note that sensory gardens invite us to view plantings close up, touch plants, and even listen actively.
Sensory gardens, which can be large or even container-size, can be used for teaching, relaxing, and multiple therapies, the University of Illinois Extension says.
If you are a gardener, you probably already enjoy how plants look. Walking through your garden for visual enjoyment is a main reason to put in the effort it takes to thoughtfully plant and maintain your landscape. When considering sight in your garden, remember all-season interest: blooms in spring and summer, bright foliage in the fall, and evergreens in the winter. Here are some plants that add visual beauty to your landscape. Celosia argentea , has crazy color and texture. Begonias and zinnias add bright colors in both their bloom and foliage. Zinnias are also a magnet for pollinators and hummingbirds (which add sound to your garden). Sunflowers are stunning in both borders and vegetable gardens, as is corn. Eggplant is a beautiful plant, and a vast array of peppers have interesting foliage and fruit colors and shapes. Ornamental cabbage has fabulous color and texture right up until heavy snow.
There are many ways to add scent to your garden. Anise hyssop smells like licorice and attracts bees and bumblebees. Old-fashioned phlox has a lovely scent and attracts many interesting pollinators. Carnations have a clove scent, and lilies, especially
Oriental varieties, have a very strong scent. Herbs like lavender, basil, and dill have strong scents. The scent of lavender is even therapeutic. If you let clover bloom in your lawn, you will be rewarded by the very sweet scent of its blossoms, especially in early summer. Spring gives us the intoxicating scent of lilacs and hyacinths. Bring sound into your garden by making it a safe and happy place for birds and pollinators. Add a water feature or fountain. The seed pods of Baptisia, or false indigo, make a rattling sound in the breeze come autumn. Switchgrass and other grasses catch the light and offer the gentle sound of the breeze through their leaves and seed heads. The breeze also creates sound through pines and other evergreens.
Edible plants provide taste on garden walks and in the kitchen. Herbs again are winners here, with chives, mint, and many more. Nasturtiums and pansies are only two of many edible blooms, and don’t forget cherry tomatoes, berries, and grapes, which are fun to eat right off the vine – yet another reason to use pesticides and herbicides sparingly, if at all, in your garden.
Finally, touch is also part of the garden experience. Lamb’s ears have soft, furry foliage. Satiny wormwood has a fine, silky foliage. Wooly thyme is also soft to the touch. Succulents have fat, chubby foliage that is fun to touch. Fir trees have soft needles, and pussy willows have soft catkins, which are such a happy sight in early spring.
Take time as your garden reawakens this spring to enjoy the sensory therapy it offers; it will truly enhance the

Last weekend, the SUNY Brockport Theatre Department and Fine Arts Series marked a milestone with the sold-out run of A Few Good Men by Aaron Sorkin. The production, guest-directed by Sofia Ubilla, captivated audiences with its powerful performances and timely exploration of integrity, duty, and justice.
All five performances played to packed houses at the Tower Fine Arts Center Black Box Theatre, reflecting the talent and dedication of the cast, crew, and production team. The audience response was overwhelming, with attendees praising the emotional depth and intensity of the production.
The opening night was made even more special through a collaboration with the Academic Success Center, which hosted a reception to celebrate the production. The reception featured inspiring speeches by Command Sergeant (Retired) Albert Buchinski and Sofia Ubilla, who shared their insights on the themes of the play and its relevance to current issues. As part of this partnership, a limited number of free tickets were offered to transfer and military-affiliated students, providing them with an opportunity to experience the performance and engage with the arts community.
“It was incredible to see such a strong turnout for this production,” said Anna Burklin, Fine Arts Series Manager. “The cast delivered unforgettable performances, and the support from the Brockport community was inspiring. It’s a testament to the passion for the arts that thrives here.”
The production featured an ensemble of talented actors, including Sydney Johnson, Jake Tomtishen, and Jeffrey Thompson, who brought their characters to life with skill. Behind the scenes, the technical team, including set designers, lighting experts, costume and stage crew, worked tirelessly to create an immersive and visually stunning experience.
The sell-out success of A Few Good Men underscores the growing enthusiasm for the performing arts at Brockport. With more exciting productions and events lined up for the semester, the Theatre Department and Fine Arts Series continue to enrich the campus and broader community through worldclass artistry.

Donald Gordon Letteer
Donald Gordon Letteer, 75, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 5, 2025. A longtime resident of Atlanta, GA suburbs, he was born Jun. 22, 1949, in Greece, NY, to Walter M. Letteer Jr. and June Mollard Letteer, both now deceased. He was preceded in death by his brother Darrell, also. Survivors include his spouse Susan, his sons Matthew and Douglas, his daughter Darra, his brothers David (Paulette) and Dale (Rhonda), his sister Dorinda, and extended relatives.
Donald was a man of letters, being the son of a mailman and earning three degrees beyond high school: B.A. and M.P.A. from State University of New York at Albany, and J.D. from University of South Carolina. He worked as a NY Dept. of Labor civil servant, a Cherokee County Assistant Solicitor and Public Defender, and a AAA Johns Creek travel counselor. He also taught Business, Contract, and Ethics Law to Limestone College students, and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) to immigrants.
Donald met his spouse of 39 years, Susan, during his doctoral studies. Together, they volunteered at many organizations, including the Association for Retarded Citizens (he was a Board Member), the Literacy Board (he was Treasurer), and the American Red Cross (he was Treasurer).
Donald earned his Amateur Extra Class Ham Radio license and was part of the South Carolina national disaster communications team. In addition to English, he spoke French, Spanish, and German conversationally, and knew basics of several other languages, which was useful for his international communications.
Donald was greatly involved in Scouting programs for over two decades, and held roles including Den Leader, District Unit Commissioner, and Cubmaster of Norcross Pack 247. He was inducted into the Order of the Arrow honor society, was a recipient of the district-level Golden Quill award, and was honored with the national Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award for his work with at-risk youth. He shepherded his daughter Darra from Brownie Scout to Gold Award recipient in Girl Scouts, and his son Douglas from Tiger Cub to Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts.
Donald loved music, and was involved in church choirs since childhood. He was active in Adult Sunday School classes for decades, and was a 25-year member of Norcross First Global Methodist Church. He participated in Handbell choirs and in church missions work, and especially enjoyed his mission trips to Appalachia and Cuba, serving others “Across the Street and Around the World”.
Donald adored his nuclear family. He was an active and nurturing presence for his children, teasing them with his Dad-joke humor, and instilling in them his values of kindness, compassion, and service to others. He had an adventurous spirit and a love for travel that became a roadmap for them (pun intended, in his memory.) For example, he journeyed throughout Europe, and visited 49 of the 50 USA states, only missing out on Hawaii.
Donald’s life was a testament to service and community, and his unwavering commitment to justice was a mirror of his character, exemplifying his belief in making the world a better place. He found fulfillment in lifelong learning, and in guiding others through their challenges, and will be well-remembered not only for his professional accomplishments, but for his warm heart and generous spirit.
Donald’s Life Celebration was held Sat., Feb. 15, 2025, at Norcross First Global Methodist Church (NFGMC) in GA. The event livestream is archived on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/share/15ty4S9vJw/ ?mibextid=wwXIfr.

Chick-fil-A restaurant coming to Brockport later this year. Photo by Christopher R. Martin.
by Christopher R. Martin
There have been many rumors floating that Brockport is getting its own Chick-fil-A. It is no longer a rumor, rather a reality in the making.
Aaron Reynolds and his wife, Marcie, are the owner-operators of the newest Chick-fil-A store coming to Monroe County at the Corner of Route 19 and Route 31 in Sweden.
In an informal groundbreaking ceremony at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March
11, Aaron and Marcie, surrounded by family and the general contractor dug into the ground indicating construction of the restaurant is to begin soon.
They stood in front of the sign announcing their latest business venture and they are looking forward to bringing numerous jobs to the area and, of course, their famous signature chicken sandwich. They plan to open later this year.
A public information meeting about the plan will be held Wednesday, March 19, at 7 p.m. in the Hamlin Town Hall Gym, 1658 Lake Road, Hamlin.

Every solid business venture starts with one thing – a pitch. Whether making a sale or convincing an investor, your business idea pitch has to be organized, well-thought out, powerful and convincing.
If you have a passion you would like to turn into a business, but you aren’t sure if anyone else will think it’s a good idea, consider participating in GCC’s 7th Annual Business Idea Pitch Competition on Thursday, April 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in room T102 of the Conable Technology Building at Genesee Community College’s Batavia Campus. The competition is free and open to the public and prizes of $100 for first place and $75 for second place will be awarded to the most outstanding competitors in the “most likely to succeed” and “most creative” categories. Pitches will be judged by local business leaders.
“A solid business idea pitch is essential for every startup. This competition offers partici-
pants a valuable opportunity to acquire the skills needed to structure, refine, and present a compelling and persuasive business pitch,” said Dr. Lina LaMattina, director of Business Programs at GCC.
To participate in this event, register by emailing Dr. Lina LaMattina, GCC director of Business Programs, at lmlamattina@genesee.edu no later than Friday, April 4, 2025. Among the leading causes for a new business startup failure is a lack of basic business experience. In lieu of losing thousands of investment dollars, today’s entrepreneurs have found another way to gain that experience before launching their startup - education. Genesee Community College offers degree, certificate and micro-credential programs in Entrepreneurship to prepare emerging business owners and investors for success. Donald Patrick Powell Sr. August 6, 1940 – February 26, 2025
ROCHESTER – Donald Patrick Powell Sr., a devoted family man, military veteran, and beloved community member, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, at Unity Hospital in Rochester, NY, at the age of 84.
Born on August 6, 1940, in Niagara Falls, NY, Donald lived a life defined by his unwavering dedication to God, his country, his family, and his community. He was the cherished husband of Phyllis A. Clark Powell, whom he married on April 25, 1964. Together, they raised a family filled with love and pride, including their four children: Donald (Vicki) Powell Jr. of Rochester, Dan (fiancée Rosie Mateos) Powell of Brockport, Donna (Tim) Coughlin of Hamlin, and Dawn Chmura of Hamlin. Donald was also a proud grandfather of ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward. He is survived by his brother, Tom (Linda) Powell of South Carolina, sister in-law Janet (Chip) Perretta of Watertown, and brothers in law Garth (Nancy) Clark of Buffalo NY, and Allen Clark of Utah.

After his military service, Donald dedicated over 25 years to the Rochester City Police Department, where he rose to the rank of Police Sergeant. Upon retiring, he continued his commitment to the community by driving a school bus for the Kendall Central School District for 30 years—a job he deeply cherished for the opportunity it gave him to interact with children and contribute to their safety and growth.
Donald’s love for his family extended to the many joys he found in his personal life. He was an avid gardener, taking pride in his meticulously maintained lawn and his beautiful garden. His collection of U.S. Marine Corps memorabilia was a reflection of his lasting pride in his military service. At home, he found companionship and comfort in his pets, Paco the dog and Finnegan the cat.

Tops Friendly Markets is once again partner with Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF), the leading global type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy organization, to raise money to help fund research to help find a cure. This year’s campaign runs through Saturday, March 22.
T1D is an autoimmune disease that causes the pancreas to make very little insulin or none at all, leading to dependence on insulin therapy and the risk of short and long-term complications. It was once viewed as a condition that could only be diagnosed in childhood, but now it is known that T1D can develop at any age, with half of all T1D diagnoses in adults.
The paper sneaker, which was designed by a Tops associate back in 1993 and is now widely used nationally as well as internationally in fundraising campaigns, will be sold at Tops registers for a $1 donation. Supporting this year’s campaign is Buffalo’s hometown team long snapper, Reid Ferguson, who will be on this year’s sneaker. Reid is passionate about this cause as his younger brother Blake, who is also a long snapper, but for Miami, has T1D. Since 1993 Tops has raised over $15 million dollars for the cause, with Tops fund-raising efforts putting the company in the top fundraisers across national corporate partners. Provided information

Orleans County legislative leaders recently attended two major government conferences held in Albany and Washington, DC. The New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) Legislative conference was held in Albany from February 23 through 26. The National Association of Counties (NACO) conference was held in Washington, DC from February 28 to March 4. Both annual conferences bring together elected officials from across New York State and the nation. While there, Orleans County Officials met with state and federal officials to lobby for funding for key County projects.
We have expanded and built an all new service building to better serve the automotive needs of our community and fellow car enthusiasts. Bring us your modern or vintage vehicle for regular maintenance, conventional service or specialized custom requests.
“I have said this before but there really is no better way to advocate for our residents then to sit down at the table with our federal and state representatives personally,” said Chairwoman Johnson. “It’s important that leaders of all levels of government representing Orleans County have our priorities aligned so we speak with one voice when seeking dollars and pursuing legislation.”
Joining Chairman Johnson at the NACO Washington, DC conference were Legislators s Merle “Skip” Draper and Legislator John Fitzak. Legislator Ed Morgan and County
Administrator Jack Welch attended the NYSAC Conference in Albany. Topics of interest at the conferences included homeland security, the Great Lakes, workforce development, economic development, and emergency management.
Orleans County officials spent time on Capitol Hill meeting with key staff from Senator Schumer’s and Senator Gillibrand’s offices. In addition, they met with staff from Congresswoman Tenney’s office. Major topics of discussion were: Orleans specific needs and more funding for the Public Safety Building; dredging; relocation and remodeling to the Genesee Community College Satellite building; the Marine Park Docks repair; and continued expansion of broadband.
“Time was tight, especially in Washington, when we were doing meetings the day of the State of the Union address, but I very much appreciated our federal delegation taking the time to meet with us,” said Orleans County Legislative Chairwoman Lynne Johnson. “I want to thank my legislative colleagues for attending these conferences and advocating on behalf Orleans County residents.”

NYS DEC courses are mandatory requirements for anyone interested in obtaining a New York State hunting license. The HE course is a mandatory requirement for anyone who would like to obtain a NYS Small/Large Game license and it is a requirement for hunting deer with a crossbow or muzzleloader. To hunt large game using a bow and arrow during the fall archery season, the DEC requires that you also take the Bowhunting course to learn bowhunting skills, elevated stand safety techniques and other New York State mandated content. Students successfully completing these courses are issued Certificates of Qualification (CoQ) that must be presented when obtaining a hunting licence, and/or muzzleloading or bowhunting privilege. The Bowhunting and HE CoQ may also be required to purchase out of state licenses. Conservation Club in person classes are offered free of charge. Alternatively, fee based online classes are available through DEC site links.
The spring Hunter Education course (gun) will be offered on Saturday, April 12. Interested students may register online through the DEC website at https://www.register-ed.com/events/ view/220687.
Students may obtain the hard copy HE Student Manuals from the Conservation Club lobby, 291 Ladue Road, Brockport, during Monday open trap (5 to 8 p.m.), from the Sweden Town Offices on State Street, or from Seymour Library at 161 East Avenue. A copy can also be downloaded from the DEC website, and download directions are provided during the registration process. Students should allow adequate time to prepare the mandatory homework.
In fulfillment of its charter, the Conservation Club of Brockport regularly provides firearms and bowhunting educational opportunities. Beginners Trap Shooting class is no longer offered, but beginning shooters, including non-members, may receive a personalized introduction on the fourth Monday of each month during open trap.
