Hilton couple brings Erie Canal packet boat

In June of 2024, Brian and Amanda Dudley of Hilton spent a week on the Erie Canal when they rented the Sunflower from Low Bridge Charters in Waterloo, NY. It was a vacation they had wanted to take for a few years, and ended up turning into much more. That week on the water took them from Waterloo, up the Cayuga-Seneca Canal and west on the Erie Canal as far as Palmyra and back to Waterloo. Amanda is the assistant village historian for Hilton and a board member of the Parma Hilton Historical Society. Brian is a selfemployed gunsmith considered a restoration expert on historic sporting firearms. Their mutual interests naturally led their primary focus on this trip to be the local history that is so plentiful along the Erie Canal. Several historic sites and museums were their destinations in Palmyra, Lyons, Newark, Clyde, and Seneca Falls.

Low Bridge Charters (LBC) and Erie Canal Adventures (ECA) are currently the two area companies offering self-captained trips on the Erie Canal with boats called Lockmasters. They are modeled after traditional English canal boats as well as classic American canal packet boats. ECA operates 11 boats out of Macedon, and LBC operates just the one boat out of Waterloo. The Wiles Family of Mid-Lakes Navigation built all the Lockmaster boats (21 in total) in Skaneateles, NY, between 1987 and early 2002. At 54 feet, the Sam Patch, operated by Corn Hill Navigation, is the largest boat they built and is strictly an open format tour boat. The other 20 boats are all liveaboards, ranging from 34- to 44-feet long. The Wiles Family had been running a navigation business on Skaneateles Lake since 1968. In the late 1970s, the family vacationed in England and spent two weeks on a traditional “narrowboat” on the canals there. The

fortunate to live close to Arrowhead Golf Course and Marina in Spencerport, where it will be docked during the canal’s operational months (mid-May through mid/late October). Transporting the Owasco back and forth at the open and close of each season serves as built-in trips for the Dudleys. The folks at Arrowhead are excited to have the Owasco in one of their slips and have been very accommodating.

To share the experience with others, Brian and Amanda will also be offering the Owasco as an Airbnb for overnight stays at Arrowhead. Provided information & photos

The Dudleys enjoy seeing historic sites like the Richmond Aquaduct ruins, east of Montezuma.
The Dudleys purchased the Owasco, a 41-foot Lockmaster, late last year.
The boat’s after cabin.
The galley kitchen is outfitted with a stove/oven and refrigerator. There is room for four at the dinette table, which also converts into a bed.

Monroe County Legislature approves Automatic License Plate Reader program

The Monroe County Legislature has approved a plan to implement an Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) Program to augment public safety efforts in Monroe County.

Currently, Monroe County is the only major County in New York State that has not instituted an ALPR Program. Erie, Onondaga, Albany and New York City have already deployed ALPRs, which has demonstrated significant results in solving crime and enhancing public safety.

“As County Executive, my top priority is the safety and well-being of our residents. Adopting an Automatic License Plate Reader program is a critical step forward, providing our law enforcement with a powerful tool to quickly identify stolen vehicles, locate missing persons, and deter criminal activity, all while enhancing the efficiency of their operations,” said County Executive Bello. “To truly support our police officers and keep our community secure, we must equip them with cutting-edge technology. An ALPR program offers invaluable data-driven insights, enabling more targeted enforcement, and allowing our limited resources to be deployed where they are most needed, ultimately creating a more secure environment for our families and businesses.”

“The introduction of License Plate Readers is a vital step forward in enhancing public safety throughout our county,” said Monroe County Sheriff Todd K. Baxter. “These tools will help our deputies identify stolen vehicles, locate missing

persons, and respond more effectively to criminal activity. We are committed to using this technology responsibly, with safeguards in place to protect the privacy and rights of our residents.”

“The safety of county residents is paramount, and the use of license plate readers will help law enforcement respond more quickly to crime, locate missing persons, and deter illegal activity,” said Legislature President Yversha Román. “Increased security cannot come at the expense of civil liberties. I appreciate the commitment to including guardrails ensuring

data is used responsibly and protected from misuse.”

The ALPR program is fully funded by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services through a New York State Law Enforcement Technology grant. The technology has been identified as one of the most important tools available to enhance the ability of local law enforcement agencies to address threats to public safety. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was awarded the largest grant amount out of the 378 New York State law enforcement agencies that applied. Provided information

The formation of the U.S. Army in 1775 by the Continental Congress also established the U.S. Military Officer Corps. The leader of the newly created Continental Army, George Washington, had little time and resources to formally train the troops and Officers. He had to rely on broad guidance issued in the form of General Orders. In these orders, Washington emphasized the expectation for the professional conduct of his Officers: “When Officers set good Examples, it may be expected that the Men will with zeal and alacrity follow them.”

George Washington’s guidance of leadership by example endures 250 years later in the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), a veteran’s organization with 350,000 nation-wide members including active duty and retired U.S. Military Officers and their spouses. For over 95 years MOAA has taken the vanguard in resolving issues that adversely impact active and reserve military members, veterans, and their families – of all ranks.

On April 9, 2025, the Genesee Valley Chapter (GVC) of MOAA participated in MOAA’s annual Advocacy in Action campaign in Washington, D.C. In a single day, over 150 MOAA advocates from across the nation canvassed the 330 offices of U.S. Representatives and Senators on Capitol Hill to provide direct constituent feedback on proposed bills before Congress that would benefit our troops and veterans. The GVC MOAA members that canvassed the New York Representatives and Senators included Colonel Tim Vaughan (U.S. Air Force, Retired), a former 107th Attack Wing Mission Support Group Commander at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station and current President of the GVC MOAA. Colonel Vaughan noted that sacrifices of serving in the military are borne by more people than just the military member. “Although family members don’t take an oath like their loved-one serving in the mili-

tary, they still suffer the unique hardships incurred by military service.”

As an example, Colonel Vaughan cited the ongoing issues with long-term care of aging veterans. About half of the approximate 16 million U.S. Veterans are over the age of 65. The Veterans Administration (VA) does provide a modest stipend to family members who provide long-term care for their Veteran. The problem is that long-term care often requires months to years of support for complex wounds, illnesses, and injuries. Veteran family care providers in such situations are often forced to sacrifice careers, income, and future retirement benefits to provide full-time support for their Veteran at a much lower cost to the government than traditional long-term care facilities. In seeking equity for these family care providers, MOAA challenged U.S. Representatives and Senators to pass the bipartisan Veteran Caregiver Reeducation, Reemployment, and Retirement Act to ensure caregivers receive the recognition, support, and financial security they have earned through their service to Veterans.

Other topics addressed during this year’s MOAA Advocacy in Action visit to Capitol Hill included incentivized military spouse hiring, increased funding and accountability of funding for aging military housing, improved access to health care for military families, and ending the wait for toxic exposed veterans.

In addition to legislative advocacy, MOAA provides resources that help military Enlisted and Officer families alike, including interestfree educational loans and grants, surviving spouse support, and financial planning. More information on these and other MOAA resources can be found at www.MOAA.org or the Genesee Valley Chapter’s website at www.gvcmoaa.org.

In today’s U.S. military, the lawful authority to lead troops in life and death situations is called an “Officer’s Commission” and can only be issued by the President based on “reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity and abilities” of the appointed Officer. An Officer’s Commission is a lifetime appointment and, as such, inspires the MOAA tagline for its members to “Never Stop Serving!”

2025 marks the 250th Anniversary of the U.S. Military Officers Corps. George Washington, General of the Continental Army, established the “lead by example” expectations that guides U.S. Military Officers to this day, including the members of MOAA. Brockport Area Veterans Club hosts annual Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony

story and photos by

On Saturday morning, May 24, between the sporadic rain and the threatening clouds, almost 200 members of the community gathered at the Brockport Area Veterans Club (BAVC) with members of the Harsch-Crisp-Seaman Post 379 of the American Legion for their annual Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony at the clubhouse on West Avenue.

The crowd was welcomed to the club by Patricia Connors, Mistress of Ceremonies and a board member with the BAVC. In her opening remarks, Ms. Connors spoke of the meaning of the day and introduced local dignitaries which included state, county and local elected officials in attendance. Members of the Brockport Fire Department were also present.

The presentation of our Nation’s Colors was conducted by Scouts from Troop 111 while the Brockport High School Band played the “Star-Spangled Banner.” This was immediately followed by an Invocation, the American Legion Ceremony and the American Creed by Jack Tangen, Presi-

Ms. Connors then led attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance offering a prayer soon after.

After a brief moment of silence for the fallen heroes, the American Legion Auxiliary presented a patriotic wreath escorted by members of Scout Troop 111.

Members of the American Legion were at the ready. They provided a solemn rifle salute before the lowering of the American Flag. A lone trumpeter could be heard in the distance playing “Taps” while the flag was lowered. After another moment of silence to reflect, the flag was risen to “The Colors” played by the BHS band.

The keynote address was given by veteran and NYS Assemblyman Steve Hawley. In a heartfelt speech, he reflected on what the day means to him and his family. He encouraged everyone present to reflect on a personal level the memory of someone they know or knew and on all those they didn’t know who never returned home to their families from the ravages of war.

Churchville honors fallen heroes with Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade

Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954 hosted a heartfelt Memorial Day ceremony and parade on May 26, bringing together the community to honor fallen veterans. The event showcased the strength and unity of Churchville, with robust participation from local organizations, leaders, and residents who gathered to pay their respects.

The ceremony was marked by a strong showing of community leadership and support. The Churchville Fire Department, Boy Scout Troop 133, Lions Club, Churchville-Chili High School Band, and the 490th Quartermaster (QM) Company, with their impressive military vehicles, all played pivotal roles. Community leaders, including Senator Pam Helming, who chose Churchville from over 60 towns to deliver poignant remarks honoring our fallen and veterans, added a special significance to the day. Monroe County’s Steve Brew, known for his unwavering support for veterans, was in attendance, joined by Churchville-Chili School Superintendent Dr. Carmine Peluso and Town leaders Kim Pape, Scott Flagler, and Ken Kuter. Village leadership, including Deputy Mayor Diane Pusateri and Trustees Michael Brown and Julie Michalko, also showed their support.

This year’s guest speaker, Ron Torcello, Squadron Com-

ways. Boy Scout Troop 133, led by Tom Lisle and supported by dedicated parents, shone brightly, distributing flags and candy during the parade and placing flags on veterans’ graves the previous Sunday.

The 490th QM Company of Rochester added a powerful touch with three military vehicles, while the Churchville Fire Department provided critical vehicle support and assisted the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office with traffic control. The Gates-Chili Bagpipers, with their stirring rendition of “Amazing Grace,” and Adam Sargent, along with his compatriot, performing “Taps” at the Civil War monument during the concluding ceremony, brought a deeply moving close to the event.

The turnout from the town and village was a reflection of the community’s deep respect for its fallen heroes.

Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954 extends heartfelt gratitude to all participants, especially the Legion family, whose dedication made this event possible. Thanks to those who came together to honor our veterans who paid the ultimate price. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Eagle Scout creates food pantry for CCCSD

Churchville Chili senior Thomas Bekridakis has found a way to help the CCCSD school community through his Eagle Scout project.

Over the past ten months, Thomas has spent time planning, constructing, and installing a food pantry on the Fairbanks Road campus, behind the Operations and Maintenance building, near the middle school parking lot exit.

The food pantry is now available for use by any member of the community, and will be regularly stocked with donations from food drives that take place throughout the schools. The pantry will be maintained by students at the Middle School. Items available at the food pantry will include non-perishable food items, such as canned foods, cereal, and more.

Thomas has been a Boy Scout for more than seven years, a Cub Scout for five years prior and, with the completion of this project, is set to receive his Eagle Scout Award on June 1. Following graduation, Thomas plans to attend St. Bonaventure University and major in Sports Management.

CCE Monroe offers pressure canner gauge testing

Are you a home food preserver?

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County is offering Pressure Canner Dial Gauge testing on three separate dates in June:

•Monday, June 2, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

•Thursday, June 5, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

•Tuesday, June 17, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For safe processing of low-acid foods such as vegetables, meats, poultry, fish and game, home pressure dial gauges must be tested yearly to ensure accuracy. The dial gauge should also be tested if it has been bumped or dropped. If the dial gauge is inaccurate by more than two pounds, CCE Professional and

the National Center for Home Food Preservation recommend replacement. If the dial gauge is off by two pounds or less, an adjustment can be made. Weighted gauges do not need to be tested.

The testing will be offered at CCE Monroe’s office located at 2449 Saint Paul Boulevard in Irondequoit and the cost for testing will be $5 (cash or check made out to CCE of Monroe County).

For more information and to register for a time to have your gauge tested, visit CCE Monroe’s website at https://monroe.cce.cornell.edu/events/2025/06/02/ pressure-canner-dial-gauge-testing-at-cce-monroeoffice-in-june. Provided information
