Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor invites New Yorkers to take part in the Canalway Challenge in 2022 to trace history and track miles on the New York State Canal System and Canalway Trail. FASNY offers BBQ and grilling tips As New Yorkers look towards nicer weather and Memorial Day weekend, many will be firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) recommends that all New Yorkers follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries. They also say to never hesitate to call for help when needed.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), an average of 19,700 patients per year (2014-2018) went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. Nearly half of the injuries were thermal burns, including burns from both fire and contact with hot objects. Grills alone were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires.

“We want all New Yorkers to enjoy the warm weather outdoors, but we also want them to be safe. Keep an eye on your grill, your kids, and stay aware of your surroundings,” said FASNY President John P. Farrell. “We are here to help – no matter how big or small an incident seems. Don’t hesitate to call your local fire department because a few minutes can make a big difference.”

Schedule a vessel safety check to keep boats up-to-date with new regulations How do you know your boat is ready for a safe summer boating season and complies with new U.S. Coast Guard regulations? A no cost, no penalty vessel safety check from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadrons can help. Go to cgaux. org/vsc for information and to schedule an inspection.

Appointments can be made for a vessel examiner to come to your boat or you can learn where scheduled inspections are taking place around your town.

Upon successful completion, the vessel is awarded a U.S. Coast Guard / Auxiliary / U.S. Power Squadrons decal that informs law enforcement and safety agencies that the boat was in full compliance with all federal and state boating laws during a safety check for that year. The program is

sponsored by the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water.

“With the recent changes in regulations on engine cut-off switches as well as changes to fire extinguishers and new 12-year expiration date, a free vessel safety check can help ensure your vessel is in compliance,” said BoatUS Foundation president Chris Edmonston. “It also gives you peace of mind that your boat meets federal safety standards and that in an emergency you will have the necessary equipment to save lives and summon help.”

Three Dog Night to headline Fourth of July celebration in Greece The Town of Greece is poised to host its biggest July 4th event ever this year as the community comes together to celebrate the town’s 200th birthday as well.

American rock band Three Dog Night will be performing on the main stage as part of the celebration. Formed in 1967, Three Dog Night scored a succession of 21 hit singles, including eleven Top Ten, and twelve consecutive gold albums from 1969 to 1975.
