Generation Two Program in Greece

In late October, Autumn Lane Elementary School in Greece, will have a second grade class participating in the Generation Two (G2), Directed Play Program, with the goal of “Connecting Generations, Improving Well-Being.”

G2 is about intergenerational friendships, and making a connection through directed child/adult play. Play enriches the lives of children. Play is preparation for life, and known to be nature’s way of dealing with stress in children, as well as adults. While participating in the program, adult volunteers report finding themselves enriched with a sense of purpose, and as advocates for children’s needs.

The program employs play to enhance a child’s development, they are stimulated to learn and explore. Based on weekly 30 minute sessions, a child meets for uninterrupted play with the same trained adult volunteer. During their time together, the adult stays totally focused on the child, the play is informal, but impactful.

Town of Greece 2022 Commemorative Bicentennial Calendar Photograph Submission Opportunity Town of Greece will be publishing a commemorative 2022 calendar in celebration for the Town’s 200 year anniversary. The community is invited to submit photographs to be featured in the calendar.

Please follow the guidelines below when submitting a photo: •Submitted photographs must be taken within the geographical boundaries of Greece and taken no later than 1989.

•You must own the photograph and have the rights to publish it.

•Photographs must be in landscape orientation and of high resolution suitable for printing.

•Images will be accepted through October 30th.

•Photographs of interest include, but are not limited to: historical figures, prominent local families, buildings that no longer exist, community events, Greece schools, Greece sporting events, local businesses, churches and Greece landmarks will all be considered.

•Photographs can be submitted digitally at greeceny.gov/ 200calendar.

Learn about growing garlic during virtual workshop Garlic is one of the easiest plants to grow, and fall is the perfect season for planting. Planting in October works well in our climate because it allows the garlic to establish its roots before winter dormancy.

Although easy to grow, producing high-quality garlic with large, tasty, full-flavored cloves – while avoiding pests and diseases – requires skill and knowledge.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County, in collaboration with Fraser’s Garlic Farm, is hosting a “Growing Garlic 101” workshop. Community garden members, school garden educators, urban and suburban backyard gardeners, and aspiring small-scale market growers are all invited to join.

The workshop will cover planting, growing, harvesting, curing, and storing. Common pest and disease problems will also be discussed.

Special consideration will be given to garlic as a crop to be grown for market. Gourmet garlic is becoming more popular and profitable every year. As a good storage vegetable, it can be sold at farmers’ markets and roadside stands throughout the season.

To help potential market growers with this specialty crop, Ed Fraser of Fraser’s Garlic Farm in Churchville (https://www.frasergarlic.com/), will share his experience of growing and marketing the gourmet garlic produced on his organic farm. Participants are

encouraged to bring questions for him.

The cost of the workshop is $12 per registration. Participants can purchase garlic seed for their fall planting at registration. There is a limited supply of organic certified German White hardneck from Fraser’s Garlic Farm. Garlic packages come in half-pound packages for $8 each; the purchase limit is 2.5 pounds per registrant. A half-pound of seed garlic will produce about 20 bulbs next season. Purchased garlic can be picked up at CCE of Monroe County, 2449 St. Paul Boulevard, Rochester, on Friday, October 1, 4 to 7 p.m., or Saturday, October 2, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Greece Police Athletic League Summer Softball

Since 1975, the Greece Police Athletic League (PAL) program has offered opportunities to the youth of the community to learn the fundamentals of sports. The program began as a way to help foster positive relationships between police officers and the youth in the community.

PAL programs provide children opportunities to participate in sports, increase selfesteem, and to learn about sportsmanship and leadership. The program is always free, and is the only free PAL program in New York State, thanks to the generous donations from the community during the annual fundraisers.

The summer softball program began on July 12th and commenced on August 18th with an end of season picnic and medal ceremony, where every player received a medal.

Fourteen Greece Police officers helped coach the softball program with the assistance of interns and the police explorers. According to Sgt. Jared René of the Community Services Unit, they had more than 150 players including many returning players and new families. The program is for ages 6-16 with all skill levels.

“We had a phenomenal year. It is amazing to see the kids grow in their skills and watch their confidence build,” René said.

Greece Chief of Police Andrew Forsythe and Deputy Chief Casey Voelkl were present for the medal ceremony. “There is such a positivity to this program. Nothing unifies like sports, especially in this age group,” René said.

GEFS&CC Thanksgiving Basket Food Program While the holidays may seem far away, the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf & Clothing Closet (GEFS&CC) has plans underway to share Thanksgiving joy with community members who need a helping hand. Last year the pandemic required changes in the long-standing program to reduce risks of close contact for donors and recipients. Rather than asking community members to provide baskets of ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner, donors were asked to provide a monetary contribution. The Food Shelf used those funds to purchase grocery shopping cards that were then distributed to households-in-need, based on family size, which allowed recipients to choose their own holiday foods.

Recipients were delighted! They got to involve their children in holiday planning and were able to select favorite foods based on their holiday traditions. Based on last year’s success, the Food Shelf is again planning to provide grocery cards for our neighbors-in-need and expects to serve at least 300 households, up from last year’s 281 households.

To provide this service, the Food Shelf needs community support. Community members and organizations are invited to participate in the program by donating to the Thanksgiving Basket program. The Special Police Unit of the Greece Police Department is currently accepting applications from candidates interested in becoming Special Police Officers.

The Greece Special Police are New York State certified part-time Peace Officers. Duties may include but are not limited to: traffic and crowd control during emergencies and special events, and patrol duty of town parks and schools. All training, uniforms, and mandatory equipment are provided for Special Police Officers.

If you are interested in volunteering to serving the community in a positive way, which is rewarding, enjoyable and want to meet new people, consider this opportunity. All details and training is scheduled and can fit into most work schedules.

Those interested in becoming a member of the Special Police Unit must satisfy qualifications which include, being at least 20 years of age, a United States Citizen, have earned a high school

diploma, have a valid driver’s license, and must be medically and physically fit. Applicants must be able to volunteer a minimum of 12 hours per month and be a resident of Monroe County.

Local Church Continues Sowing Seeds of Unity

Lakeshore Community Church hosted their 15th Roc Services on Sunday, August 26, 2021. This service brings together churches with diversity to worship as one. Pastor Vince DiPaola, of Lakeshore Community Church, met Bishop Dave Singleton, of Ark of Jesus Ministries, in 1997. Ark of Jesus Ministries is a Christian church located in the city of Rochester. The friendship between Pastor Vince and Bishop Singleton grew into helping one another with small projects eventually leading to having a service together.

Over the past 15 years, ROC Services has grown to include other city churches and a Messianic Jewish congregation. “By and large people have loved it. There is a beauty in diversity and that is attractive to many and yet, we all share a common faith in Jesus Christ and that is what really causes a powerful response to the services. There are always people who will say to me, or the other Pastors, that they have learned how to better relate to and love people who look different than themselves. In fact, at times, people acknowledge that they struggle with racial stereotypes and the service is a part of the journey to overcome them. That’s so cool to hear,” Pastor Vince said.

This year ROC Services had over 500 people in attendance from Lakeshore and the three guest churches, Ark of Jesus Ministries, Bishop David Singleton; Victorious Living Church, Dr. Barbara Thomas and Pastor Warren Meeks Congregation; and Shema Yisrael, Rabbi Jim Appel. The service opened with the blowing of a Shofar which is a horn of a ram and used for important Jew-

•Contact the farm in advance. Apple picking is a wildly popular activity, so expect a crowd to be there on a typical autumn weekend. Call ahead to inquire about safety protocols and operating hours. If the farm is open several days per week, ask which days are the least busy and schedule your trip when foot traffic figures to be minimal.

•Choose firm apples without bruises. According to Pickyourown.org, apples should be crisp and firm. Don’t worry about the color of the apple, as color is not an indicator of ripeness. Instead, Pickyourown.org advises people to ask the farmers which

The church is active in many other initiatives to help continue role modeling love, including outreach programs that help with Flower City Work Camp, each year helping with home repair projects, Greece Schools to distribute food to their needy families at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the annual Love Week ministry who help with projects throughout Rochester free of charge showing love and kindness to the homeless, first responders and area nursing homes.

Quarantine Project adds Beauty to Greece Neighborhood Gayle Long of Belmore Way in Greece found herself in the same position as many Americans while in quarantine, she had extra time on her hands. Long said, “When we moved into our house in March of 2018, the backyard was a mess and unusable due to standing water. We wanted to use our backyard more.

We decided to clear the ugly weeds and brush and make it more attractive. While furloughed from my job during COVID-19, I began to clear the hill and plant flowers and shrubs. The idea was to have something in bloom all season long. It is still a work in progress but we’re now enjoying our backyard and the transformation has been great!”

Long’s neighbors are also enjoying her backyard garden. Neighbor Mark Warth brought the project to Greece News’ attention, he said, “Just thought I would send you some pics of the wonderful job Gayle Long did on her hill! Really makes the neighborhood look nice. Took two years, and a lot of hours to do it. The hill is pretty steep and was difficult to garden, but she (Long) did it!”

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich As we head into the Fall Season, I reflect back on this summer and all of the fun events and activities that were able to take place this year. We were thrilled to bring back beloved events that were not possible last year.

During last month’s meeting of the Greece Town Board, we recognized several outstanding members of our community. Dr. Alinaghi Farrokh and Edna Joyce Baker; Marilyn Caccamise, owner and director of the Marilyn Schneider School of Dance, located on Long Pond Road in the Town of Greece, and Mr. Warren Crandell celebrating a special birthday, 95 years.

This past month, we held a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially unveil the new inclusive playground. The inclusive playground, located

After at Basil Marella Park, was built in partnership between the Town of Greece and Endless Highway. This organization raised $50,000 with an aggressive fundraising campaign for the We-Go-Round swing and partnered with our young Greece resident, Santii Patel, who wanted something for kids with disabilities to play on. The Town of Greece contribution to the project was over $165,000. The Town of Greece led the rest of the way, supporting the remaining development of the playground, which includes a sensory center, swings, and the We-Go-Swing. The We-Go-Swing was introduced in January of this year and is one of the first in the country to be built and debut at this playground! It is the first wheelchair platform swing to meet all playground safety codes. This amenity allows a person in a wheelchair to swing with their friends and family without restriction and without having to leave the main play area. This playground also features “poured in place” rubber surfacing, which is a unitary surface that allows for ease of mobility. Other site amenities include benches, shade systems, and a fence which is important for safety and security. The goal of this playground is to maximize the play value for those of all abilities. Additionally, the restrooms have been adapted to incorporate a changing table that is designed for both kids and adults to be changed with minimal challenges.
