Grants for the Arts The ongoing Covid-19 shutdown is leaving arts organizations unable to produce live events and Rochester area artists scrambling to survive through governmental assistance and reliance on a network of family, friends and colleagues for support. Because of this dramatic need an Arts Fund was created to deal with the unique needs of artists and arts organizations during this shutdown. The purpose of the Arts Fund is to assist artists and non-profit organizations through the Covid-19 pandemic by alleviating past debt or current debts and other expenses caused by the inability to work. Grant application guidelines can be found at www.BreadandWaterTheatre.org, the fund’s fiscal sponsor. Everyone who is able is encouraged to visit the site to donate as well. Other opportunities to donate will be available through various social media outlets. Because of the unique nature of the crisis there will be no in-person fundraising until the shutdown is ended and it is safe for the community to gather. Grants will be awarded based on the availability of funds and approval by a grant making committee made up of area artists. “We will be forever changed by this pandemic,” says J.R. Teeter, Artistic Director of Bread & Water Theatre, “If we do not support the arts when they are in such great need, we will lose what makes this community a rich and wonderful place to be. Even if everything with the reopening goes smoothly it could still be months before new theatre

productions are launched and the community feels safe to attend them.” Founded in 2000, Bread & Water Theatre is committed to making the arts accessible and affordable to a broadbased audience and acting as a positive agent of change in its community. Under the artistic direction of J.R. Teeter, BWT develops theatre that speaks to our living, evolving, and dramatically changing world through new works of drama, and aspires to be a major force in American theatre, providing audiences with challenging contemporary drama and innovative community outreach programs. Arts Fund details are available at www.BreadandWaterTheatre.org and on supportive social media sites. For more information, call (585) 538-9684. Provided Information

Greece Native winner of Belhurst 2020 Wedding Contest Belhurst Castle announced the winners of its 2020 wedding contest, Taylor Milner and Christian Mullins, Taylor Milner was born and raised in Greece. After receiving over 650 applications for the contest, Milner and Mullins were selected as one of three finalists, who then went on to interview with the Belhurst team. The couple has won the all-expenses paid ceremony and reception at Belhurst, along with services from vendors including, hair and makeup by Belhurst’s Isabella Spa-Salon, photography from Tellier Studios, DJ services from Q Music Productions, flowers from Sandy’s Floral Gallery and officiant services From This Day Forward. “Winning the Belhurst Castle Wedding Contest is a dream come true,” said the couple. “A wedding at Belhurst honors the memory of Taylor’s great-grandparents, who had their 50th wedding anniversary at Belhurst. Although they won’t be at our big day physically, they will be there in spirit.” Milner grew up in Greece, NY and met her fiancé in 2015 at Western Kentucky University where they both studied physical education. She went on to graduate at the University of Louisville and works as a teacher at Doodle Bugs Children’s Learning Academy. Mullins was born and raised in Kentucky, and now works as a special education teacher. “The wedding contest turned out to be so much more than we imagined. The response we received was overwhelming in the best possible way,” said Carmen Brennan-Bain, Events Manager, Belhurst. “After having the chance to meet Taylor and Christian in person, they touched our hearts instantly, but the best part was watching them receive the news that they had won in the company of their families who traveled to surprise them.” “We read so many deserving stories and entries from couples locally, across the region and even from outside of New York State,” said Duane and Deb Reeder. “We could not be happier with our decision and are very excited to be part of their journey
as they plan their big day at Belhurst.”

Greece Police Teen Academy Empowering Teens by Tami Raco During the last week of August, Greece Police Department hosted one of their most loved events in the community, The Greece Police Teen Academy. This year they completed their third annual weeklong Teen Police Academy with 11 recruits. Thanks to both Town Supervisor Bill Reilich and Police Chief Pat Phelan this program provides amazing opportunities to local teens interested in learning more about law enforcement. The program is supervised by Community Service Sergeant Jared René. “This is my favorite week of the year. Every year the program expands and gets bigger and better,” René said. The Academy is facilitated by Officer Matt Bachman, Officer Bill Murray and Officer Mark Babcock. Each day of the academy program is rich with hands on activities as well as presentations from officers and detectives, the K9 unit and the Deputy Chief. The teens participated in a variety of team building drills, live fire drills, shooting competitions as well as a range PT session including fun
tire flipping drills. One afternoon the Teen Academy participated in Reality Based Training role-playing with blanks for simulated ammo and range safety officers. According to the officers who facilitated this training, the recruits were amazing and performed very well under stress. Much of the academy is designed to provide the recruits with a reality like experience. “Often the teens arrive timid and nervous but in a matter of days they are showing confidence and improved self assurance,” René said. The team work environment with the team building drills like “trust falls” really help the teens feel cohesive and accomplished. Although the program is fairly young it creates lasting positive imprints on the participants helping them evolve their possible career paths in law enforcement. To see more pictures of the week long Teen Police Academy or for more information visit the Greece Police Face book page.

Greece News September/October 2020 17
by Barbara Burke Matthew D. Garnere is a recording engineer, musician, singer and songwriter who grew up in Greece. He graduated from Greece Olympia High School in 1988 and says growing up in Greece was the foundation for his success as a musician and a recording engineer. “Greece is a very important place to me. My family home was by the Mall and that is a very resourceful place for someone who wanted to be in music. There were music stores and electronics stores all within a bicycle ride away.” Matthew’s father, Joe Garnere is a former musician, a jazz crooner from the 50s and 60s, his stage name was Joey Vincent. “My father had a music collection that my brother and I would listen to. Matthew Garnere analyzing sounds in his home engineering studio. He had recorded acetates of his music that were our favorite. Those acetates were what Once Matthew started developing an affinity for the recordplanted the seeds for my obsession with recording and sound,” ing arts he started “messing around with a tape recorder” in his Matthew said. bedroom. During his high school years at Olympia Matthew deAll through his childhood Matthew’s father was very support- veloped some serious musical skills. He taught himself how to ive of his interest in music. “Regularly my father took my broth- play instruments, how to sing and how to capture and record the er and I around to music stores and studios and I always came sounds he was making. “I wanted to be really good and to underhome with some new musical information from someone that I stand how everything worked. I decided to take an electronics met and talked to or from the newly purchased 45 rpm record of course at school. That is when I met Earl Gates, the electronics teacher at Olympia, and a specialist in the area. In the beginning my choice,” he said. he was pretty hard on me, after he found out about what I was doing with a tape recorder he understood that I was serious. I learned a lot from him and because of him I had many opportunities to explore in the field,” Matthew said. Matthew learned a lot during those high school years. He made recordings of his songs, he sang them and played all the instruments. He said, “I always kept my ears on the big picture. It is very helpful to listen to your own voice over and over and over again on tape. When you listen to yourself on tape you get used to how your voice sounds, and you then start hearing everything else going on. I’m a perfectionist, but I do have the ability to know when something is finished.” Over the years Matthew honed his listening skills and developed the best ears in the business. In the late 80s he moved into the City of Rochester and opened his own professional recording studio What’s Real Unlimited. He engineered and produced hundreds of recordings, many that were his own. He also became a much in demand live sound engineer at local clubs and music festivals. continued on page 18
18 Greece News September/October 2020
The Sounds of Life continued from page 17
As with many during pandemic, Matthew’s work as a live sound engineer just vaporized. The pandemic also presented a different opportunity, something that Matthew has been wanting to pursue more extensively. “I now have the time for my favorite thing, to reunite people with their audio memories. Most families have audio or video tapes or recordings in their basement or attic, memories that were recorded years ago and have been tucked away, voices on recordings that they feel will never be accessible. I have the experience, ability and the equipment to reunite them with these memories. It’s a thrill for me to help other people to get reconnected with their early memories. I have had clients that have had to step away from their dreams of music and go into another career for whatever reason. I can help them resume their dream. It is a thrill for me,” Matthew said. There is also the people that have recordings or videos of their loved ones that are no longer living. It may be relatives that family members have never met, but through the recordings the spirit, stories and history lives on in the tape. Matthew has the
equipment and skills to retrieve approximately 11 different formats of past audio and video tapes. “It is really a thrill for me to save this material and that it is not lost. The recordings talk to me. I focus on the source material that needs to be saved and bring it back to life without too much trickery. I don’t want to hear the impurities, I am always trying to get back to the original tape. It is the ability to restore a moment in time for others, I do enjoy that. If I do my job right, the listener may not even realize that the music playing or the voice speaking was once a tape or a disc. The sound just returns to being a pure life event that can cheat time again and again for generations to come,” he says. Every job that Matthew does has it own set of circumstances and there are many variables in the process to retrieve information for many formats. “I always work case by case on pricing and try to make it work for everyone that needs my service. Listening to people’s memories is a great honor and a very personal thing. I have made many friends by doing this work,” Matthew said. You can find more information about Matthew and his services on his Facebook business page What’s Real Unlimited. Photos by Karen Fien, youth photo provided

Plant native perennials in fall by Kristina Gabalski We have made it to September, and the next several weeks until the first hard frost are perfect for planting native perennials. Planting natives is a great way to retain local natural history and biodiversity. It also helps support native insects and the birds who need native insects to feed their young. Natives even contribute to important microorganisms living in and on the soil. By definition, natives are those plants that grew in our local area before European settlers arrived. They have many advantages, according to Penn State Extension, including being well-adapted to our climate and easy care once they are established. Additionally, natives typically require little or no fertilizer as they tend to like less fertile soil. Austin Little at Illinois Extension notes that planting in the fall has more benefits than planting in the spring. The interesting list of perks includes improved establishment, flowering the following spring, better vigor, and better weed suppression. In autumn, air temperatures begin to drop, but the soil continues to hold on to summer warmth. This creates ideal conditions for new root structures to grow. Root systems need time to establish new micro or feeder roots, Little explains, and this helps the transplant to acclimate. The plant can then gradually go dormant when winter temperatures arrive. Plan to get your transplanting done a few weeks before killing frosts set in. That makes early to mid-September a great time to plant. Watering is an important part of establishing your fallplanted native perennials. Encourage deep root growth by watering less often, but more deeply. Water well once or twice a week, depending on rain or temperatures. Back off on watering as it gets closer to the first hard frost to allow the plant to begin the hardening-off process. Autumn tends to be cooler with more consistent precipitation than during the summer months, both of which help plants take hold with less effort on the part of the gardener. Native plants also typically do not need to be fertilized, and
Greece News September/October 2020 21 that is especially true when planting in the fall. Little says that if you add nitrogen and other nutrients in the fall, the plant may begin to put out new vegetative growth, which will be damaged by freezing conditions and also interfere with good root development. Once nighttime temperatures stay around freezing, you can mulch your transplants with straw, shredded leaves, or shredded bark. Leave open space around the stem to keep unwanted pests from setting up housekeeping as well as to keep moisture from building up. Mulch or compost should be added in a twoto three-inch layer. A bit of extra work during early autumn can mean a beautiful jumpstart to your landscape next spring. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s website has lists of native plants to help guide you in your plant choices: https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/lands_forests_pdf/ factnatives.pdf.
Autumn is nearly here, and September is a great time to plant, especially natives. Purple Coneflowers and Rudbeckia are native to North America. The native aster in the photo on the upper right has yet to bloom. Photo by Kristina Gabalski

Arbor Day Foundation Names the Town of Greece Tree City USA The Town of Greece was named a 2019 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the United States Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. The Town of Greece achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements which include a tree board, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. “The Arbor Day Foundation has once again congratulated the Town of Greece on earning recognition as a 2019 Tree City USA.
From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich Although this year has brought many uncertainties, we have worked hard to provide our residents with family-friendly activities to enjoy throughout the summer – such as our Drive-In Family Movie Nights and exercise classes and activities at the outside pavilion. We also recently announced that we will be re-opening the Town of Greece Community and Senior Center this Fall. Modified hours and activities have been established. Please call the Community and Senior Center at 723-2425 for more information. As in years past, this Fall’s Shredding Event drew a huge crowd. Hundreds of residents came out to take advantage of this free service offered by the town. I enjoyed helping out at the event – along with Receiver of Taxes Andrew Conlon and Greece Council members Mike Barry, Josh Jensen, Bill Murhpy, and Diana Christodaro – and saying hello to residents as we helped unload their vehicles. I am excited that for the 23rd consecutive year, the Town of Greece has been recognized as a Tree City USA! This recognition is awarded in honor of our commitment to effective urban forest management. Preserving our town’s natural beauty is a very important mission, and the recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation has granted our Town with this distinguished title and is a testament to our community’s commitment in conserving our forestry and protecting the natural beauty of our town. This past month, I had the opportunity to join Assemblyman Manktelow, along with several other elected officials from various levels of government, as we voiced our concerns regarding the restrictions that have been placed on nursing home facilities since the start of the Pan-

We gathered at American Legion Post #468 because the families that spoke today had loved ones who proudly served our Country and now are being denied their basic freedoms. During the conference, we heard from the Miles family and the Vanas family as they gave firsthand accounts of the impact the nursing home facility restrictions have had on their families and loved ones. Their stories are some of thousands who have been prohibited from visiting elderly parents and loved ones in nursing home facilities these past several months. I will continue advocating with all those affected to find a way to reunite our families. Harvest for Health by Tami Mungenast CPT CNWC
The late summer produce that is harvesting locally is not only delicious and fresh but can yield a large array of health properties. It is well proven that a diet rich in plant based foods helps lower risks of many chronic diseases. Lets take a closer look at some of the health benefits of eating a few of the most popular produce from the local late summer harvest. Cucumbers- Cucumbers are part of the squash and melon family. They are high in water (hydration) and low in calories. Cucumbers have a mild flavor and can be used in salads, whole and even juiced. Some health properties of cucumbers are: •Improved Hydration- consisting mostly of water cucumbers contain important electrolytes. •Bone Health- a good source of Vitamin K which helps calcium uptake which helps improve bone health. •Cancer prevention-cucumbers contain high levels of nutrients (cucurbitacins) that are thought to precent cancer by stopping the proliferation of cancer cells. •Cardiovascual Health- Cukes are a good source of fiber which help improve overall lipid health reducing risk for cardiovascular problems. They also provide good sources of magnesium and potassium to help blood pressure. Summer Squash and Zucchini- Summer squash and zucchini are members of the gourd family. They come in a variety of sizes shapes and colors and can be used in a variety of recipes and soups. They are low in calorie and carbs but rich in nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin B6, and vitamin A. manganese, riboflavin, and potassium. Some health benefits from these late summer favorites are: •Immune System Health and Anti Aging- The vitamin C in the squash provides 57 percent of your daily needs in a 100-gram serving. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that is important in boosting immunity, repairing cells, and slowing down the aging process. •Metabolism of food- Vitamin B6 is important in protein metabolism. Riboflavin is important in the metabolism of carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Manganese is a mineral that is important in many metabolic pathways including gluconeogenesis, which is the production of glucose from non-carbohydrate precursors, as well as bone, and cartilage formation. •Eye health- Summer squash also contains a fair amount of carotenoids, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which can help protect us from some age-related eye conditions. Tomatoes- It was only 200 years ago that tomatoes were
OFC Creations announces Fall Lineup of Classes and Programs

thought to be poisonous in the United States (U.S.) This is likely to be because the plant belongs to the toxic nightshade family. Now tomatoes are the 4th most popular farm market produce. Despite botanically being a fruit, it’s generally eaten and prepared like a vegetable. Tomatoes are great fresh especially when in season locally! They can be used in sauces, salads and a variety of dishes and entrees. Tomatoes are rich in vitamins A (as beta-carotene), C, K, and various B vitamins. Tomatoes are also rich in fiber as well as minerals like potassium, manganese, magnesium, chromium, and copper but the main health benefits come from a phytonutrient called Lycopene. Health benefits are: •Lowers cancer risk- Tomatoes contain antioxidants that target free radicals and oxidative stress contributing to cancerous tumor growth. Lycopene is a notable, well researched antioxidant present in tomatoes that is linked to preventing colon, prostate, and even lung cancer. •Decreases stroke risk-Blood clotting should occur when needed, but excessive blood clotting leads to a snowball-effect resulting in arterial damage and stroke. 75% of people older 65 years old experience a stroke in their time. Luckily, lycopene has anti-inflammatory and anti-clotting properties to prevent and digest plaque build up. •Maintains glucose levels- Prolonged blood sugar levels hurt major organs such as the brain and kidneys. If you’re battling diabetes, eating more tomatoes is a great way to incorporate more low glycemic foods to your diet to stabilize high blood glucose. •Strengthens your mental health- Daily ingestion of tomatoes is associated with treating depression and Alzheimer disease. In a prospective study, researchers listed tomatoes as a beneficial fruit to enhance the nutritional diversity of your diet. Tomatoes add vitamins B and E, which can limit neural degeneration. •Good for eye health -Beta-carotene and lycopene are readily available in tomatoes and serve a dual function as an antioxidant and vitamin A precursor. These carotenoids aid in the filtration of harmful light entering the eyes. •Prevents Anemia- Tomatoes can also protect against anemia. The high amount of vitamin C in tomatoes is essential for the absorption of iron. Not to mention, consuming up to one cup of sun dried tomatoes provides you with ⅓ of your daily recommended iron intake. We are fortunate to have so many healthy options when seeking fresh produce. Local produce is always the freshest! Shop local whenever possible. Be sure to check out the print editions of Greece News and Suburban News for local growers and farm markets.
