From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich November has always been a time to look back and reflect on what we are thankful for. With the holidays just around the corner, I would like to wish everyone a very safe and happy Thanksgiving and Christmas season!

As the snow begins to make its way to the area, I would like to remind residents about our Winter Parking Ordinance. There will be no parking allowed on any town roads or grass rightsof-way from November 1st until April 15th between midnight and 8:00AM. This allows for safer and more effective plowing and salting of dedicated town streets and helps keep the cost of snow removal down, saving tax dollars for residents.

If you drive down Latta Road here in Greece, you will notice a new business has opened. This past month, we held a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the grand opening of Tractor Supply Company. Tractor Supply provides goods and services such as hardware, seasonal items, home garden needs and power equipment.

In September we broke ground for the Greece Public Library Main Branch Children’s Library Expansion Project. This project is a culmination of several months of planning to create a new state-of-the-art space for our young residents.

We hosted a safe and fun Family Halloween Movie Drive-In at the Greece Town Hall Campus for our young residents this October. The spooky movie featured this year was Monsters University. It was fun to see so many little ghosts and goblins enjoying the movie on the big screen.

Showing Support Healthy Highway and Local 2 U Distribution worked together on the idea and on October 28, 2020 a group of residents showed their appreciation for the Greece Police Department by coming together and standing in the parking lot of the police station.

Greece Ecumenical Clothing Closet Request

The clothing closet is in need of children’s fall and winter clothing, size 2-8. All donations can be dropped off at the clothing closet, 500 Maiden Lane, Rochester, Tuesday and Thursday from 10-12 and Wednesday 4-6.

The donation should be placed in a 13 gallon white kitchen bag, this allows for labeling of the bag. All donations must be accepted by a volunteer, items left outside cannot be accepted.

Greece Police officers were presented with a homemade banner which was the biggest hit of the day. It was signed by a first and second grade class from a local elementary school.

There were also 94 gift bags for each officer filled with healthy snacks to support healthy officers.

Greece Chamber Launches Small Business Webinar Series with SBA The Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce recently launched a monthly webinar series on topics to help small business with resources before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Recover and Grow: Monthly Small Business Information Series with the SBA will focus on a variety of different topics and provide an opportunity for questions and answers. The lead presenter for the series is Virginia G. Smith, Rochester Branch Manager, U.S. Small Business Administration. The facilitator and host is Sarah E. Lentini, President & CEO, Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The virtual presentations will typically be held on the fourth Thursday of the month, but will be held on the third Thursday for the months of November and December due to the holidays.

The series is free for all Greece Chamber members and costs $25 per monthly webinar for non-members.

Greece Historical Society Awarded Grants continued from page 11

In July 2020, the Preserve New York grant panel selected 19 applicants in 15 counties to receive support totaling $193,390.

Many of these grants will lead to historic district designation or expansion, allowing property owners to take advantage of the New York State and Federal Historic Tax Credits. Support provided by Preserve New York since its launch in 1993 totals more than $3 million to 457 projects statewide.

In August 2020, the Rochester Area Community Foundation awarded a total of $177,450 in historic preservation grants to 14 organizations in its eight-county region, which comprises Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne and Yates counties. Projects funded by the grants will lead to historic district designations or expansions, preservation of historic properties, preservation education through virtual and live programming, oral histories, and mapping of historic and culturally significant sites. Grants from its two historic preservation funds have been awarded for the past 15 years.

Chronic stress is something many of us face, maybe more now than ever! Perhaps you are feeling more stress since the onset of the pandemic, the elections, from kids doing school from home or any other issues that can increase stress levels. Stress can be mental, emotional and physical. It can be acute or chronic. These types of stress can adversely impact our health in two different ways.

1. Stress can affect our diet, what we want to eat and how much of it.

2. It can also affect our ability to store fat and put us into an obesogenic state, increasing our risk for chronic disease.

Stress and cravings Did you ever notice that stress can make you want a certain type of food that you normally do not struggle with? Highly palatable foods like high sugar and high carb foods release dopamine the feel-good hormone which is particularly attractive when you are stressed. Stress can also lead some to increase their alcohol consumption. Too much alcohol is not only empty calories but also can increase the risk for cancers in the body. Stress over time can keep creating this draw to these types of food or drinks and can lead into an almost addictive or compulsive state that becomes increasingly difficult to control.

Stress and body weight Stress is a main contributor to obesity. It is also a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. Stress is linked to an increase of body fat in the mid-section and belly

Stress increases certain hormones that make your body want to store fat especially belly fat.

Highly palatable foods might feel good in the moment, but it also exasperates the cycle of stress eating. Eating healthy more nutritious foods can help with mood control as well as focus. High sugar or high carb foods can alter our moods to be more agitated and feeling less self-control with the insulin spikes and dips. Healthy snacks like tree nuts can help satisfy a craving but also provide you fiber and nutrition without the insulin spike. Drinking water or tea instead of empty calories beverages or alcohol can help improve your hydration and your mental clarity which will improve your ability to manage stress.

To reduce the impact of stress on diet and overall health it is so important to be mindful. Practices such as meditation, yoga and other spiritual practices can help mitigate the impact of stress. Go back to the root cause of the stress and address it from the root rather than the symptoms. If you are stressed by outside worldly issues limit your access to social media and the news. Taking social media apps off your phone can help immensely with this stressor. Limit your screen time to television and the news if that is creating stress.

If you find that your job or family is causing you stress, take daily time to mediate and start a gratitude journal to write in daily. Exercise does wonders for stress. A simple brisk walk can help improve your mind set. Joining a workout program or a health group with others can help you make your health a priority. Make time for yourself and your self-care to help balance your life and manage your stress.

Determining how to alleviate stress can seem challenging but the impact on your health goes beyond your waistline and can improve your long-term vitality and wellness!

Greece resident Heather Henderson is the immediate past president of Kiwanis Club of Greece and was recently elected to the position of Lieutenant Governor of the Genesee Division of the Kiwanis Club. This position runs October 1, 2020 thru September 30, 2021. As Lieutenant Governor she oversees the 16 clubs in the Genesee Division including Batavia, Brockport, Byron, Geneseo, Greece, Irondequoit, Livonia, Mt. Morris, Nunda, Pembroke-Corfu Darien, Rochester, Rochester West Central, Southwest Rochester, Spencerport, Warsaw and York-Leicester.

Henderson has been active in the Kiwanis Club for over 13 years and views her election to the position of Lieutenant Governor as an important step in her volunteer work. She said, “This is a new opportunity to see the even larger picture of what Kiwanis is, and to share in that love and passion. The resources that I have now in this roll are extensive. I can learn so much more at a higher level.”

Heather was born in Rochester. Her parents moved to the small town of Guntersville, Alabama when she was only two months old. After graduating from Guntersville High School she attended Berry College in Rome, Georgia and after graduation in 2003 she worked in Georgia as a licensed insurance agent for over 13 years. She moved to Greece in December 2016 for a “fresh start.”

Heather’s volunteerism began in middle school when she joined a service club and participated in after school programs.

In High School she was a Kiwanis Key Club member, a Kiwanis organization for High School students. According to the Key Club website, “High school student members of Key Club perform acts of service in their communities, such as cleaning up parks, collecting clothing and organizing food drives. They also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects and holding elected leadership positions at the club, district and international levels.”

I respected and trusted her and decided that Kiwanis is my purpose in life and I wanted to carry on her legacy of community and service by helping as many kids and youth as I can.”

The Kiwanis Club is defined as a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. In Greece Henderson uses her connections within the community to determine needs. She said, “The beauty of the Greece Central School District is that they work with us to identify those children and families in the greatest need. What I love about the Kiwanis is that their assistance doesn’t need to be one set thing. We can service a family and a child with whatever the need may be, from food to a mentor, the needs are so broad.”

her new role as Lieutenant Governor Henderson has set some lofty goals for her term. “The original Rochester Kiwanis Club is the 4th oldest charter in Kiwanis International history, founded in 1916, and the first Kiwanis Club in New York State. My goal and focus as Lieutenant Governor is to rebuild and reinstate the original Rochester Club. Another project that will be a major focus for Henderson is New York District Governor Brenda Leigh Johnson’s projects, Disaster Relief & Emergency Preparedness and Veterans in need.

Henderson said the work of the Kiwanis Club can be summed up in the Six Objects of Kiwanis.

They are: 1. To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.

2. To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

3. To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.

4. To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.

5. To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form

enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.

6. To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will.

On becoming involved and volunteering in your own community Henderson says, “Greece has needs just like every community and it is filled with many organizations to choose from. There are opportunities for every one at any age to volunteer, so many beautiful options to serve right here in your own neighborhood. Start with just one hour a week or one hour a month.”

In addition to her work in Kiwanis Henderson is active in many other community organizations. She is an Ambassador for the Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce and was named Young Professional of the Year in 2019. She is a member of GRC Women’s Interest Networking group, a social member of the North Greece Fire Department Auxiliary, a member of Rochester Women’s Network and Roc Girl Bosses.

Check Out Hunger campaign underway Check Out Hunger, a critical fundraiser for Foodlink, is now underway at area Wegmans stores.

The annual campaign began October 18 and will run through November 28. Shoppers have the opportunity to donate a few dollars – or round up their grocery bill – while in the checkout line at all Rochester-area stores. The campaign raised nearly $700,000 last year for Foodlink to help fund many of its food-related programs, and support its food-banking operations across its 10-county service area.

“Putting food on the table continues to be a challenge for too many of our neighbors due to a 45 percent rise in food insecurity projected for our region,” said Julia Tedesco, President & CEO of Foodlink. “Our response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been fueled by the generosity of our supporters, and Wegmans’ Check Out Hunger campaign is just another example of how the community can rally around our mission.”

Wegmans began its Check Out Hunger campaign in 1993, and has raised more than $43.2 million for participating food banks – $13+ million for Foodlink alone.

The OFC Creations Theatre Center

by Barbara Burke In early April 2020 OFC Creations relocated to their new 9,600 sq. ft. home, the OFC Creations Theatre Center, located at 3450 Winton Place, Rochester. In early July 2020, after a complete renovation of the space, OFC started operations in their new home.

The OFC performing arts center’s renovation includes a 56 ft. wide state-of-the-art stage that allows the creation of different size productions, from an intimate gathering to a full production. There are 260 new fixed theatre seats, new traveling curtains, professional lumen projector and a new movie screen, over 60 lighting fixtures, air conditioning, new HEPA Filters, a spacious Green Room for performers and a 750 spot parking lot. There is also a re-designed lobby and lounge area with in-house Food & Bar Service which is available for rental to the community for use to host receptions, community events and private events.

OFC (Opportunities for Creativity) Creations was founded

in 2005 by Executive Director Eric Vaughn Johnson. According to their website OFC Creations Theatre Center is, “A multipurpose arts center that focuses on youth theatre education and performances with classes in acting, singing and dance; mounting professional plays and musicals; hosting community events and fundraisers, presenting out-of-town nationally-known entertainers; and providing much-needed performance and rehearsal space to local arts groups.”

Eric Vaughn Johnson acknowledges that opening a new arts center during a pandemic presented a series of challenges, he said, “Finding a way to be creative during this time was a challenge and also an opportunity. Knowing the stress everyone is experiencing, it is important to provide creative outlets and for it to be accessible to anyone that wants to participate.”

OFC Creations developed a “Fun and Safety Plan” directive for their 2020 programs. The booklet contains detailed information on how to stay safe while participating in theatre continued on page 24

activities. “We need the arts now more than ever. A safe creative outlet for our young performers is important to us. We had 500 kids come through our summer programs and we were able to keep everyone safe. Following New York State guidelines, we worked with smaller groups of children and as a result more opportunities for the kids to play different parts in the performances happened. Performers were able to play many roles in the productions and everyone had the opportunity for speaking parts. The large stage provides ample room for social distancing. Everyone is masked and those who are singing are masked and also wear face shields,” Johnson said. Many theatre groups have approached OFC for guidance and to share their safety procedures. “The goal is to keep it safe and fun,” Johnson said.

The Salvation Army sets out to “Rescue Christmas” For the first time in 130 years, The Salvation Army is starting its annual holiday fundraising campaign early across the country in order to rescue Christmas. The funds raised through the organization’s iconic red kettles are at risk this year due to COVID-19 while requests for services are at an all-time high.

Based on the increase in services already provided in response to the pandemic, the organization could serve up to 155 percent more people nationwide in 2020 with Christmas assistance, including putting food on the table, paying bills, providing shelter, and helping place gifts under the tree – assuming the resources are available. Throughout the Empire State Division of The Salvation Army last year, 4.3 million meals were served. Since COVID19 hit, it has already served 5.4 million meals in just six months.

At the same time, due to the closing of retail stores, consumers carrying less cash and coins, and the decline in foot traffic, The Salvation Army could see up to a 50 percent decrease in funds raised nationally through the red kettles, which would limit their capability to provide services for the most vulnerable. To put this in perspective, last year $3.8 million was raised across the Empire State Division through about 2,000 red kettles.

“We know that this year, the need for financial support is greater than ever before. We need your help to ensure Christmas is bright for those who need it most. We will continue to redefine what it means to Do the Most Good during these unprecedented times and we hope you will join us in rescuing Christmas for our most vulnerable friends and neighbors across New York State,” says Major Ivan Rock, State Commander for Empire State Division.
