Beyond the Badge: Gates Police Chief retires from law enforcement and steps into politics

by Tami Raco After 37 years in law enforcement, Gates Police Department Chief Jim VanBrederode has retired. However, his lifelong passion for keeping communities safe will not be retiring.

Jim VanBrederode moved to the Gates area from Connecticut when he was just 12 years old. His father, an Episcopal Priest, moved their family to lead a church in the Rochester area. Before the move, Jim lived in a small town near the police station. As a young boy, he loved spending time talking to the police officers and hanging out at the station. “There were only seven officers in my town, but they brought me on a ride along, spent time with me, and mentored me,” Jim said. This is where his interest in law enforcement began.

In 1985, VanBrederode began his law enforcement career in the Gates Police Department. After four years of suburban policing, he transferred to the Rochester Police Department to experience urban policing. He returned to the Gates PD in 1992, where he remained for the rest of his law enforcement career, being promoted to Chief in 2013. He was later appointed President of Monroe County Chiefs of Police Association in 2017.

VanBrederode spent much of his career being continually active in victim advocacy, criminal justice reforms, and the fight against substance abuse. His passion for serving in these areas kept him in the community spotlight. He was accessible to the media and consistently available to the community.

“What I loved most about my career in law enforcement is the people I met along the way,” said Chief VanBrederode. “I met so many families, sadly through tragedies, but seeing how they dealt with these tragedies made them heroes in my eyes. I have become friends with so many throughout the years. Despite society getting less personal, we tried to maintain a strong connection to our smaller community through policing.”

After 37 years in law enforcement and nine years as Chief, VanBrederode no longer wanted to occupy the position. “Good leaders are only effective for eight years, and I never wanted to be retired in place,” he said. After talking to his family and command staff, Chief VanBrederode decided 2022 was the year to retire.

The new Chief of Police is Robert Long. Chief Long has 17 years of law enforcement experience. He started at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and transferred to the Gates Police Department 15 years ago. “It was a seamless transition,” stated VanBrederode. Chief Long was sworn in on February 7.

As Chief VanBrederode began considering his retirement from law enforcement, others were nudging him to consider running for NYS Senate. “I don’t need a job,” chuckled VanBrederode.

Now retired, VanBrederode felt that he needed to take on this new challenge to effectively impact change, stepping into politics for the community he spent four decades serving. In the Novem-

My Hometown Neighbors ber 2022 election, he will be running for NYS Senate to represent District 56, which includes Greece, Gates, Brighton, Henrietta, and the west side of the City of Rochester.

“I am doing this for the victims of crime, the business owners in our community, the teachers and residents of our community,” VanBrederode said. “The people passing these laws that are endangering our community and especially hurting crime victims have no idea how they are dismantling the criminal justice system. These damaging decisions are being made in Albany by those who never worked a day in the trenches of crime.”

His primary objectives, if elected, are to improve community safety and to address the issues resulting from bail reform. “My first goal is to stop the mayhem and the violence in the streets.

Taking violent, dangerous criminals off the street is a priority,” he said. Citing an example of someone with serious allegations of sexually assaulting several children being released on bail to await trial, VanBrederode added, “We continue releasing dangerous criminals back to the street and endangering the lives of the victims and the witnesses.”

As the former Chief of Police with lifelong experiences in law enforcement, Jim VanBrederode has decided to step out from behind the badge and into the race for NYS Senate with aspirations to make the community a safer place. C-C student to receive Do the Right Thing Award Churchville-Chili High School sophomore Jonathan Raplee has been chosen to receive the Rochester Police Department’s Do the Right Thing Award.

Jonathan was home alone with his grandmother last October when a fire started. He stayed calm and got her safely out of danger. Their home was destroyed, but Jonathan’s brave action kept his family together.

Byron-Bergen Math League wins division championship Byron-Bergen’s defending interscholastic mathematics champions have topped their division for the third year in a row.

Led by veteran coach, math teacher Jon DiLaura, the Bees won three out of four competitions against seven other schools.

“At the start of the year, we didn’t know how it would all go since we had a couple really amazing seniors that graduated last year,” said co-captain Zoey Shepard. “We realized after the first couple competitions that we really needed to step up our game. We heard rumors that other schools were practicing nearly every day.”

Byron-Bergen found themselves in second place after two of the four competitions. According to the captains, the turning point for the season came when Coach DiLaura had to unexpectedly miss the third competition.

“After finding out that (DiLaura) would be unable to take us to the competition, we became desperate to win in his honor,” said co-captain Elli Schelemanow.

“This was significant because in (the previous) competition, another team had outscored us and taken our first-place spot,” said co-captain Dayanara Caballero. “Upon learning that Mr. DiLaura wouldn’t be able to be there with us, there was a big shift on the team. Everyone’s focus and drive multiplied. This time, we weren’t just competing for ourselves, we were also competing to prove to Mr. DiLaura that there was nothing to worry about. The team had the talent and we put the work in to see it through.”

said co-captain Maddie Pimm. “When we won, it really showed how talented we all are when we focus. This was when I realized another championship was most definitely possible, if we all continued to work hard.”

The math competitions take place over a series of rounds. The competitors solve math questions in advanced topics such as logarithms, trigonometry, systems of equations, and matrices.

The test results are tabulated based on a point system. The ByronBergen team completed the season with a total of 526 points. The next highest team finished with 496 points.

“Our team is so strong because of the students’ commitment to excellence,” said DiLaura. “These students give up their lunch time to attend practice, eat together and study the topics for the next competition. This extra effort is what separates us from the other schools along with an incredible group of teachers that give our students a strong base in mathematics starting in the elementary school.”

The four co-captains will all compete at the State competition later this month.

“This will be my second year at the State competition and I’m excited to compete with my co-captains and friends,” said Schelemanow. “Being able to grow as a student and a leader throughout these past years has been wonderful.”

The captains are all studying hard to prepare for States, including working with former rivals from other teams, to present a strong contingent from the GLOW region.

Gates Recreation hosts “Be Kind” event On Saturday, February 5, over 50 volunteers came to the Gates Town Hall to work on projects at an event called “Be Kind.” The event was hosted by the Gates Recreation & Parks Department.

The goal was to spend the morning doing smalls acts of kindness in an effort to spread the idea of “paying it forward.” Projects were completed to help Willow Domestic Violence Center, Gates Historical Society, One Soldier at a Time, Verona Street Animal Shelter, and a few other town organizations. Given the success of the event, this is something that will be done again in the future.

Legion hosts Valentines show for veterans and community The Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post #954 hosted locally-famous Beatles tribute band “Eight Days A Week” on February 11 for a Valentines show. Over 100 people attended - veterans for free and community members for a minimal fee – for an evening of rocking and dancing.

Legion members say it is important for veterans’ mental health and well being that they know they are appreciated and loved. In the doldrums of a Rochester winter, the Legion Family put together the entertainment to bring love and support to these veterans, their families, and the community.

Chili Historical Society holding programs to celebrate town’s bicentennial

by Mary Kinton, President Chili Historical Society This year the Town of Chili celebrates its Bicentennial Year.

Chili Historical Society (CHS) is excited to take part in the celebration by hosting Native American Storyteller Perry Ground on March 26, 1 p.m., at the Chili American Legion Post #1830, 450 Scottsville-Chili Road. This is a highly entertaining yet educational program. The program is family-friendly, and the building is handicapped-accessible.

At present, the CHS Board is working on holding Open Houses throughout the year along with bringing interesting and historical programs to its members and the public. Our mission is to educate the public about the founding families that started the town and how they lived. We have established a scholarship fund for grade school children so that they may appreciate the town and state in which they live.

CHS was established on March 25, 1965, for the purpose of bringing together people interested in the history of the Town of

Over time, CHS has had many different board leaders and members. They all worked to preserve the history of the town as well as establish a fellowship amongst themselves. As with any organization, it saw the membership and activity change over time. There were years of growth and then years where the interest dwindled.

I am happy to say that CHS is seeing growth once again. Chili Historical Society is housed in the circa 1811 Streeters Inn located in Chili. The building is owned by Monroe County and is part of Black Creek Park. The building has been restored to its original design creating the perfect backdrop for CHS to display artifacts from past citizens and businesses of Chili.

Connecting hearts and generations

by Pamela A. Moore, Harvey C. Noone Legion Family Post # 954 The 2022 Valentines for Veterans Challenge was a huge success based just on numbers. The challenge to collect more than the 2021 total of 1,236 Valentines was easily surpassed, with the final tally of 2,517 Valentines collected more than doubling the 2021 results.

While doubling the number of Valentines collected was fantastic, the real measure of success lies deeper in the stories and photographs. This project connected hearts and generations from three- and four-year-olds at Parkminster Preschool in Gates who made Valentines to 98-year-old WWII veteran Richard Betteridge, a Valentine recipient. A life-long Riga resident and a retired Gates-Chili teacher, Betteridge recently moved into Westwood Commons in North Chili. What better lessons in gratitude, empathy, history, and love of country can our children receive than by participating in this project? And what better gift could a 98-year-old veteran receive on Valentine’s Day than Valentines thanking him for his sacrifice as a young soldier who served to preserve freedom for future generations of Americans?

Today, it is hard to do something that feels like you made a difference. But, this project proves that you can make a difference with seemingly small actions. It is hard to say whether this intergenerational project brought more joy to the creators or the recipients.

Newman Riga Library partnered with the Harvey C. Noone Legion Family Post #954 in Churchville by acting as a collection site.

Director, Lynn Brown, met one young boy who proudly handed her a bag of Valentines he made. Then, as he was leaving, he turned and said, “You have a good day, now.” She said, in those moments, he melted her heart.

Other Valentines dropped off at the library included a note from the mom of two teens. It said her daughters enjoyed making the Valentines, and wished they could have personally delivered them but understood the COVID restrictions.

Grandparents used making Valentines as an opportunity to explain that, as a young man, Grandpa was a soldier, and the Valentines were being made for other men and women who also served our country and who were in Batavia at a “special hospital for heroes.”

Three generations of the Schulte family participated, contributing hundreds of Valentines, including those designed and made by granddaughter, Sawyer Richardson. She took these Valentines, featuring rows of red, white, and blue hearts, to Caledonia Mumford High School for 200 classmates to sign.

The 4-H Pledge includes a promise to serve the community.

The 4-Hers of Genesee County put that into action by making over 250 Valentines.

Many other families and friends gathered to help meet the challenge. A Stamping Up group created unique and elegant Valentines, others purchased Valentines, and others got out the construction paper, stickers, markers, and glue to make Valentines.

Cindy Baker of the Batavia VA’s Center for Development and Civic Engagement reported that as she distributed Valentines, “there were smiles and giggles as the messages were read and shared among the veterans. Those from children led to discussions of their children and grandchildren bringing many more smiles, and a few tears, but good tears!”

The response was so overwhelming that the Legion Family was also able to deliver Valentines to Eagle Star Veterans Home in Spencerport and Westwood Commons Assisted Living Facility in North Chili.

Plans are already underway for 2023. A couple from Hilton read the article in Westside News and mailed Valentines to the Legion with a note stating they will get others to help next year.

Two Alpha Kappa Phi Sorority sisters made Valentines and are planning to enlist more sisters next year. A mom sent a text saying she had already bought supplies. With that kind of enthusiasm and early support from the community, the prospects are promising for growing this project in 2023 and beyond.

My Hometown Hobbies

Local train club celebrates 100th Train Show in Batavia The Genesee Society of Model Engineers will be holding the 100th Great Batavia Train Show on Sunday, April 3, at the Richard C. Call Arena on the campus of Genesee Community College in Batavia. Show hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is $6 adults, $3 under age18, and free for children under 13. Parking is free, and a snack bar will be available.

For 50 years, the Great Batavia Train Show has been one of the premier hobby events in Western New York. All forms of model railroad and train-related merchandise will be available. Items offered include all scales of model trains, historic railroad items, books, DVDs, and toys. Modeling demonstrations, and a limited number of portable layouts, will be part of the fun.

The Genesee Society of Model Engineers has promoted the hobby of model railroading in the Western New York area for over 50 years. This not-for-profit organization is headquartered at 50 Main Street in Oakfield. In their facility above M&T Bank, club members maintain four operating model train displays. Visitors are welcome on Tuesday evenings, and an open house is offered free to the public each December.

Must-haves for your Paddy’s Day party St. Patrick’s Day is a festive occasion marked by parades, live music and, of course, the color green.

Many people look forward to Paddy’s Day. That anticipation makes hosting a St. Patrick’s Day party a big responsibility. In recognition of that, the following are some must-haves that hosts won’t want to forget this St. Patrick’s Day. When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day cuisine, hosts should not overlook the importance of providing some staples that people have grown to expect on March 17. Corned beef and cabbage might not be the most authentic Irish meal, but it’s become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and therefore earned its place on your Paddy’s Day menu. Hosts can start the day off right by whipping up a pre-parade traditional Irish breakfast, complete with eggs, Irish bacon, white and black pudding, and brown bread.

Hosts need not feel beholden to cuisine exclusive to Ireland or those that have become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, but making sure at least one such dish is available is guaranteed to please your guests.

Music contributes greatly to the festive atmosphere on St. Patrick’s Day. If there are any musicians in your social circle, and particularly any fiddlers or pipers, enlist their services for the party. If live music isn’t possible, arrange a playlist featuring some of the Emerald Isle’s most popular performers, including The Dubliners, The Pogues, The Chieftains, and Christy Moore, among many others.

For many revelers, St. Patrick’s Day wouldn’t be the same without Guinness, which is among Ireland’s most famous exports. This world renowned and easily recognizable Irish dry stout traces its origins to 1758, when Arthur Guinness began creating it at his brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin. The black beer and its familiar white head instantly evoke images of Ireland for millions of people across the globe. While hosts outside of Ireland might not be able to find a keg of the black stuff for their Paddy’s Day party, it is widely available in cans.

Part of the joy of St. Patrick’s Day is letting your hair down.

Whether you can dance an Irish jig or not, don’t hesitate to cut a rug and encourage others to join in the fun. Hosts who set a lighthearted tone will ensure their guests follow suit, guaranteeing a fun time will be had by all.

Basketball teams raise money for Camp Good Days

On Monday, January 31, and Tuesday, February 1, the ByronBergen boys and girls varsity basketball teams joined forces to raise money for St. John Fisher College’s annual Teddi Dance for Love to benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times. The Dance for Love is the largest activity on the St. John Fisher (SJF) campus.

Byron-Bergen’s Superintendent Pat McGee, varsity boys basketball coach Roxanne Noeth, and varsity girls basketball coach Nick Muhlenkamp all attended and played basketball for SJF. As such, the varsity basketball teams were enthusiastic about supporting this fundraiser.

During the varsity games on those nights, the players collected donations at the doors and from the crowd. Coach Noeth also pledged to make an additional $20 donation if one of her players could make a half-court shot at halftime. Aiden Clark made the shot, raising an extra $20 for a good cause.

“The players really had fun with this,” said Noeth. “They challenged each other to help raise more money and, in the end, we are donating $681 to the Dance for Love. I’m very proud of their efforts.”

Elizabeth “Teddi” Mervis was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1979. Her father wanted to do something to ease some of the pain in Teddi’s life and to bring some of her childhood back.

Within a year of Teddi’s diagnosis, Camp Good Days and Special Times was founded. There, children with cancer could come and be kids again. Teddi enjoyed the happiness of Camp Good Days until her death in February of 1982. Since then, Camp Good Days and Special Times, Inc. has grown internationally.

Dr. Lou Buttino, a former professor at SJF and close friend of Teddi’s father, thought that his students might be able to help.

After talking with a small group of students, a 24-hour dance marathon was suggested. The Dance for Love began in 1982 with only a few dozen dancers. That year they raised approximately $7,500.

Since then, the dance has multiplied in size, with over 400 dancers and volunteers raising an average of $50,000 each year.

Tap into the history of maple sugaring at GCV&M In celebration of the return of maple sugaring season in NY State, Genesee Country Village & Museum will host its annual Maple Sugar Festival & Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, March 19, Sunday, March 20, Saturday, March 26, and Sunday, March 27.

Visitors can enjoy the museum’s sprawling grounds, perfect for gathering with family and friends after the long winter months.

Explore the history of maple sugaring in NY, hike the Maple History Trail, and indulge in a Pancake Breakfast in the museum’s Meeting Center. From the Nature Center to the Historic Village, visitors can explore all aspects of maple syrup. The Maple Sugar Festival & Pancake Breakfast is sponsored by Brite.

Visitors to the Maple Sugar Festival can tap into the history of maple in the 19th century by following the tap lines from sugar maple trees along the Maple History Trail to the Sugarhouse in the Genesee Country Nature Center. See how the wood-fired evaporator transforms fresh, clear sap into thick, amber maple syrup and learn from GCV&M naturalists about the tree tapping process and history of sap collection. Plus, learn about sugar maples and the collection techniques employed to keep the sugar bush sustainable.

Gather with family and friends to savor freshly made classic or cinnamon swirl pancakes, maple apple French toast, pork sausage, maple bacon scrambled eggs, maple banana baked oatmeal, and of course, real maple syrup. Fuel up before heading out for an adventure around the museum, or plan to warm up and enjoy breakfast after touring the Nature Center and Historic Village. Tickets for the Pancake Breakfast can be purchased separately from the Maple Sugar Festival tickets, or visitors can save by purchasing a combo ticket for the 12 p.m. breakfast seating only.

Explore the Historic Village to find kitchen fires roaring, and costumed interpreters sharing insight into life in 19th century New York. ASL interpretation will be offered for select programming on Saturday, March 19, and Sunday, March 27, through a partnership with NTID’s Department of American Sign Language & Interpreting Education.

Foodies will delight in the chance to try maple treats, both sweet and savory.

Learn how to make sugar on-snow, enjoy a meal in the Depot Restaurant, savor a maple-forward craft Tap into the history of maple sugaring beer in the Freight House in NY State at Genesee Country Village Pub, purchase maple baked & Museum. goods in the D.B. Munger & Co. Confectionery, and stop by the Flint Hill Store to purchase genuine New York State maple syrup to enjoy at home or give as a gift. Plus, explore historic kitchens in the Historic Village to see traditional foods cooked using maple products, learn how villagers preserved food before the invention of refrigerators, sample historic “receipts,” enjoy chili, cornbread, tea, coffee, and hot cocoa served out of Hosmer’s Inn (built in 1818), and more.

Advanced ticket purchase is strongly encouraged as tickets to both the Maple Sugar Festival and Pancake Breakfast are limited and may sell out. The Maple Sugar Festival will take place on Saturday, March 19, Sunday, March 20, Saturday, March 26, and Sunday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and seatings for the Pancake Breakfast will be at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 12 p.m.

Tickets for the Pancake Breakfast can be purchased separately from Maple Sugar Festival tickets, or visitors can purchase a combo festival & breakfast ticket (for the 12 p.m. breakfast seating only).

Tickets for both the Maple Syrup Festival and Pancake Breakfast are now available online now at gcv.org.
