Legendary pole vaulter Jenn Suhr announces retirement from the sport Jenn Suhr remembers seeing a member of the Roberts Wesleyan College men’s track and field team practice pole vaulting in the Voller Athletic Center about 20 years ago and shaking her head in awe.

“He was clearing about 12 feet and I asked him if he was going to the Olympics because that just seemed amazing to me,” she said.

That vaulter never qualified for the Olympics, but Suhr did. Three times.

an incredible 18-year career that saw her become the greatest women’s pole vaulter in American history.

Suhr, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist, 17-time U.S. national champion and current world record holder in the indoor pole vault, officially announced her retirement from competitive track and field on June 23 at age 40.

Her announcement came on the eve of the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Suhr said she knew it was time because the focus of her conversations with her husband and coach, Rick Suhr, had shifted from heights and meets to things that would be happening after pole vault.

“It just kind of just clicked and I have no regrets,” Suhr said. “I think that this is a great place to end. I am not ending with an injury, and I am not ending in a place where I can’t vault.”

“The Roberts community celebrates the outstanding achievements and athletic career accomplishments of alumna Jenn Suhr ‘04,” Roberts Wesleyan College President Dr. Deana L. Porterfield said. “She has been a role model to our community as she earned accolades on the international stage, holding the highest records in the world, with persistence and humility.

Jenn was presented with plaques and proclamations from the Town of Riga, the Village of Churchville, the Greater Churchville-Riga Chamber of Commerce, Monroe County, and the New York State Senate and Assembly. Well done and thank you, Jenn, for staying true to who you are and modeling excellence and character in every aspect of your life.”

Suhr, a native of Fredonia, averaged 24.3 points while leading the Roberts women’s basketball team to the National Christian College Athletic Association championship game in 2004. She graduated as the all-time leading scorer in Roberts women’s basketball history with 1,819 points and was named the NCCAA National Player of the Year as a senior.

Roberts Director of Athletics Bob Segave recalls the first time he met Suhr in person. Suhr was training in Voller Athletic Center as was the women’s basketball team, which Segave coached at the time. After her workout, she made her way over and talked with the star-struck team.

“She was so humble and gracious,” Segave said. “She spoke about her time at Roberts on the basketball court, which some of the players were not familiar with. We continued what became many wonderful conversations. We are so proud of her determination, grit and perseverance. I always tell her that her ‘heart of a champion’ and ‘mental toughness’ is at its best when the stage is the biggest.

“I feel that it is appropriate that Jenn, a woman who has reached record-breaking heights, announced her decision to retire from competition on the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX. I have no doubt in my mind that she will continue to inspire and influence female athletes long into the future.”

Suhr also won NCCAA titles in the javelin, 100 hurdles and pole vault during her time at Roberts. She started pole vaulting after meeting Rick Suhr on the Roberts campus and won the 2005 U.S. championship just 10 months after picking up the sport.

She went on to win an unprecedented 16 more national championships and is the only vaulter (man or woman) in U.S. track and field history to win three Olympic trials. Suhr retires as the world record holder in the indoor vault (5.03 meters, 16 feet, 6 inches) and has held the women’s indoor world record since March 2, 2013.

She won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and finished seventh while battling a severe virus at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero.

As she looks back on her career, Suhr appreciates competing on the world’s biggest stages but takes the most pride in the way she went about her business every day.

“I think that if I look at my career as a whole, it’s the resilience that I am most proud of,” Suhr said. “There were times 10 years ago when people thought I should retire and there could have been shortcuts, but Rick and I never took them. When things got tough, we just settled in and went back to work.”

She is also grateful for all of the support that she has received during her career, especially from her fellow Western New Yorkers.

“I just want to thank all of the people that were there for it,” she said. “I never would have made it alone and I needed all of the people that I had to support me along the way. I was very blessed to have the people that I had behind me.”

Those people include the Roberts community. Suhr has returned to her alma mater several times over the years, including pole vaulting exhibitions after the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, and has always felt at home. Her gold medal tour visited Roberts for Homecoming Weekend on September 28, 2012.

“It’s amazing to have gone to a college that wouldn’t have been known to have a pole vaulter or track and field athlete come from there,” Suhr said. “When I go back to Roberts, I see professors and administrators from years ago and it’s like I haven’t missed a beat. I can walk into Bob (Segave’s) office, sit down and grab a piece of candy and catch up. Those are things that you don’t get at other colleges.”

The Suhrs have moved back to the area and Jenn is looking forward to the “freedom” that retirement offers, including camping with family and taking part in activities that she couldn’t enjoy as a competitive athlete. She has a pair of water skis that she hopes to break in this summer and is looking forward to hitting the slopes for the first time this winter.

“I’m free to break bones and tear ligaments now,” she said with a laugh.

Churchville-Chili senior earns U.S. Figure Skating award The U.S. Figure Skating Graduating Seniors Program recognizes students who have balanced competitive excellence and dedication to their sport with high academic achievement during high school. Churchville-Chili High School’s Francesca Ziobro was recently honored with the organization’s Gold Level Graduating Seniors Award for 2022.

“This is a unique award which Francesca richly deserves,” said C-CHS Principal Scott Wilson. “She excels in all she does and still finds time to help others. We’re very happy to see her many accomplishments recognized.”

She has achieved the highest gold-level status in three different styles of figure skating: Moves in the Field, Dance, and Free Dance. Her sport requires many hours of practice – nine hours a week and more. Her high school academic career has also been demanding. She has taken accelerated courses in math and science since seventh grade. She is also an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma candidate, the most rigorous track to graduation the school offers. The two-year IB program at C-CHS is an academically challenging and balanced program of education that seeks to promote the “whole person” and develop skills for a rapidly globalizing world.

“In addition to being an accomplished athlete and scholar, Francesca is a member of National Honor Society and participates in the school’s Foreign Language Club and GRR Team 340 Robotics,” said Counselor Marjorie Rudy. “Last summer, she took part in the National Student Leadership Conference (https://www. nslcleaders.org), which focused on international business. She plans to attend Bentley University in Boston, majoring in business finance. Francesca hopes to continue developing her figure skating skills at college.”

U.S. Figure Skating is the national governing body for the sport of figure skating in the United States. Founded in 1921, the association has more than 750-member, school-affiliated and collegiate clubs. Ziobro trains with the Genesee Figure Skating Club in Rochester.

The U.S. Figure Skating Graduating Seniors Award recognizes the hard work of student athletes who have participated in figure skating throughout high school; awards are given at the Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, level based off a skater’s level of competitive achievement in high school. Selection for this award speaks to a skater’s continued commitment to succeeding in their athletic and academic endeavors.

Community Sports Score Big Among Youth

by Colleen Onuffer For many adults, favorite childhood memories include lacing up cleats, putting on a jersey and being part of a community sports team. Our area is home to multiple organizations that give kids the opportunities to learn a sport, make friends and create their own memories.

“I think that as a parent, you remember the memories you made on the field and you want that for your kids too,” said Rick Vitaro, who has been involved with Chili Youth Baseball for two years and currently serves as the organization’s president.

Vitaro continued, “Kids have so many different options these days. Not only with all of the technology available, but there’s so many more sports offered in the summer – plus travel sports have blown up where those commitments are sometimes all year around. Before all of this, baseball was what kids did during the summer.”

Chili Youth Baseball has been around since 1954 and has 225 players registered across 17 teams and five divisions this season.

With Churchville, Gates and Wheatland all tied to Chili, players from all surrounding towns are welcome to join the league.

Another popular community organization is Chili Soccer Association, one of the oldest and largest soccer clubs in New York.

“For over 50 years, Chili Soccer Association has had the sole purpose to get area children to play and enjoy the game of soccer,” said Victoria Sloan, Director of Public Relations for the organization. Sloan has been involved with Chili Soccer since her son, a legacy player, started in the Tykes program at five years old. For the past five years, she’s been on the board. “Chili Soccer paved

the way for many of our local clubs to become part of such a great soccer community.”

Its history dates back to 1968 when Ed Merante started the first boys’ soccer program in the USA with four teams of seven-yearolds. Today, Chili Soccer has several different programs for all ages and skill levels, with roughly 1,000 participants each year.

With the pandemic pausing sports seasons over the past couple of years, some organizations strive to regain players.

“Prior to the pandemic, we were growing consistently because of the coaching and youth development that was being offered,” explained Michael Georgetti, President of Gates Chili Little League.

“Now we are almost into a reset mode trying to regain popularity.”

This year, the organization had six teams with 70 youth players.

“Now that we are starting basically from scratch again, we are trying to make sure that we are delivering a program that is teaching the basics to the game of baseball and giving all the kids a fun and exciting season.”

Beyond skills of the game, these organizations instill deeper life lessons.

“With the game of baseball, there is always something new to learn as well as teaching kids how to fail and still be successful,” said Georgetti. “It’s also a way for parents to give the kids a structured program to keep them involved in positive programming.”

Vitaro said, “I think there are a lot of life lessons for kids to learn by playing sports in general. Things like listening to your coach, learning new skills, working as a team, working hard to get better,

learning sportsmanship, and encouraging your teammates. All those things are great to teach kids even as a four-year-old.”

From local sponsors to participation in events, community is a key part to these organization.

“I think Chili Baseball can help bring the community together in a lot of ways,” said Vitaro. “Our hope is that it helps build roots here. If you grow up in a great community where you are able to participate in these leagues and activities, build great memories and see the community thriving, then you are more likely to want to stay.”

This year Chili Youth Baseball organized an Opening Day event to kick off their season, introducing each team, throwing a ceremonious first season pitch, and providing food and activities for kids.

Beyond that, the organization has participated in community events organized by the town – such as the Christmas tree lighting, community Halloween event and walking in the Chil-E Fest parade. The organization has plans in the coming years to be able to give back more to the community, including raising money to help improve the fields they have been fortunate enough to use over the years.

Chili Soccer Association also tries to stay involved with the community. Each year they host three tournaments, including the Pink the Field Tournament which is a fundraiser that earns money for Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester. They also work “with Town of Chili each year to organize a Give Back Day where players and coaches work to help maintain and beautify Davis and Union Station parks, which are our home field spaces,” said Sloan.

Especially now, people enjoy being part of something bigger. The love for these sports is felt both on and off the field.

“This organization means a lot to me. I love the rich history, combined with the promising future,” said Sloan. “Seeing new kids come in each year and grow and progress as they go along, while developing lifelong skills and friendships is what it’s really all about.”

Georgetti, who played in Gates Chili Little League himself as a kid, echoes that sentiment. “To me, the organization is a great gift to give youth and coaches an opportunity to bond and grow to love a great sport,” he said.

“What’s great about baseball is that the game hasn’t changed,” said Vitaro. “It brings people together to play and have fun and I think that as long as it’s around, parents and kids will always want to play.”

Area Girl Scouts receive 2022 Gold Award for service projects Girl Scouts of Western New York (GSWNY) has announced 15 Girl Scouts in Monroe County as 2022 recipients of the Girl Scout Gold Award. Recipients from this readership area include Addison Glozer of Spencerport, Ashlyn Neathawk of Rochester, Rachel Reifsteck of Rochester, and Maya Voelkl of Rochester.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the most prestigious award for girls, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are leaders and visionary change makers.

The Gold Award project is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going for the Gold.” The project should fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be on-going or sustainable. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities and she can enlist in the military at a higher starting pay grade.

Addison Glozer of Spencerport is a member of Troop 60727. She said, “Overall, I am extremely grateful for the constant presence that Girl Scouting has been in my life. While other clubs, organizations, and sports fade in and out as you progress through school, Girl Scouts has been there from kindergarten to high school graduation. I have made lifelong friendships with the girls in my troop and we have countless memories from our years together. Additionally, I’ve been able to try so many things I may not have had the chance to do otherwise and have learned valuable lessons along Addison Glozer the way.”

Glozer’s project, After School: Elementary French Program, was developed to teach basic French vocabulary to elementary students through a series of fun presentations and engaging activities. Her goal was to inspire the same love of French language learning that she has in elementary students and expand global awareness starting at a younger age. While the COVID-19 pandemic derailed her original intentions of starting an in-person club run by high school French students, the pandemic also presented a unique opportunity to reach even more people. “Ultimately, I created an interactive website that students of all ages could access and spend as much or as little time as they wanted practicing new vocabulary, reviewing with fun games, learning about French culture, or even exploring different French-speaking countries via Google Maps,” Glozer said.

Ashlyn Neathawk of Rochester is a member of Troop 60631.

She said, “Being a Girl Scout has provided me opportunities to collaborate with others and provide service within my community. I met a lot of people who helped me grow in my communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. I learned that through my hard work and good fortune, I could provide for and support others in need.”

Neathawk’s project, Project Paper Product, was designed to supply paper products for the Coldwater Women and Ashlyn Neathawk Children’s Residential Home in Rochester.

Through advertisement and personal communications, she solicited donations and collected them over a period of a few months.

“Despite the pandemic, I exceeded my goal and provided paper plates, bowls, cups, napkins, toilet paper, paper towel and facial tissues. When I delivered the paper products, the shelter was overwhelmed by the quantity and generosity of the donors. I was able to collect and donate 1,503 paper plates, 607 paper bowls, 460 paper and plastic cups, 960 napkins, 74 rolls of toilet paper, 21 rolls of paper towels, and 85 boxes of facial tissues,” Neathawk said. The project will continue to be sustained by Neathawk and her fellow Girl Scouts in the Black Creek Service Unit.

Rachel Reifsteck of Rochester is a member of Troop 60028. She said, “Girl Scouts helped me to understand the importance of service to others and our environment. It also helped me to obtain leadership skills that will prepare me for my future.”

Reifsteck’s Gold Award project was to build bat houses, creating a roosting habitat, at the First Responders Park in Gates. “I chose this project because the population of bats is decreasing and bats play a significant part in our ecosystem,” she said. Bats are beneficial because Rachel Reifsteck they eat approximately 3,000 mosquitos per night. A greater presence of bats means fewer pesticides are needed, reducing the amount of chemicals released into the environment. She collaborated with the town of Gates Recreation and Parks Department and worked closely with Director of Parks to make the project possible. “I created four bat houses that were constructed, painted, had plaques attached, and were affixed to trees I selected in the park,” Reifsteck said.

Maya Voelkl of Rochester is a member of Troop 60727. She said, “Girl Scouts provided me with the opportunity to establish my values and character through all types of experiences. It also showed me the importance of helping others to do the same while simultaneously having a fun time.”

Lack of inclusion is a problem that individuals face at all ages, but in many cases it stems from a young age. To help combat this issue, Voelkl painted a mural at Leo Bernabi Elementary School, a pair of wings representing each individual child’s abilities, and created a worksheet that went along with it. “I sent letters home to each parent promoting conversations about privileges and disadvantages that each student has. The ultimate goal was to circle the conversation around to recognizing that while each student faces different challenges, each student has also formed their own pair of wings that they personally need to fly,” she said.

The children each colored a pair of wings and wrote three things that were special Maya Voelkl about them on the same piece of paper.

The students were told to compare their paper to a friend so they could see that no two pairs of wings looked the same, but still had the ability to take them places. “I believe my goal was accomplished because many teachers said that the kids were amazed no one had the same drawings. They were encouraged to think about what made them different from each other and how that made them special in a positive way,” Voelkl added.

Chili Presbyterian Church awards scholarship The Board of Deacons from the First Presbyterian Church of Chili has selected Ashleigh Naugle to be the recipient of the 2022 First Presbyterian Church of Chili Scholarship. Her church family is very proud of her accomplishments both at school and at church. They have watched her grow into an amazing young lady with an incredible faith. Her Youth Group Leader, Adam, says she is someone who is always willing to help, which is why seeing her at the church’s chicken barbecues, food cupboard, playing the bells, Youth Group activities, etc. is no surprise. The First Presbyterian Church of Chili couldn’t be more pleased to give her this recognition.

Ashleigh is the daughter of Brenda and the late Brian Naugle.

She graduated from Churchville-Chili Central School District last month. In the fall, Ashleigh plans to attend SUNY Buffalo, where she will major in Speech and Language Pathology. After many volunteer opportunities with children, including co-teaching Children’s Church, Special Olympics, and the Unified Team at CCCSD, Ashleigh has developed a passion for working with children with developmental disabilities.

Chili American Legion Auxiliary awards two scholarships The American Legion Auxiliary Chili Unit 1830 awarded two $1,000 scholarships. The winners are Audrey Booth and Mia Bodulovic.

Audrey Booth is a 2022 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School.

She will be attending North Carolina University at Wilmington this fall studying Exercise Science. She intends on continuing her education with a masters to become a physician’s assistant. Audrey has been a long standing member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Mia Bodulvic is a 2022 graduate of Gates Chili High School who will be attending Niagara University of NY with an expected field of study in biochemistry.
