ROC the Dogs Rescue: Finding a Home for the Holidays ROC the Dogs Rescue is a non-profit, volunteer only rescue organization serving the Rochester area. They are committed and passionate about rescuing dogs locally, regardless of the reasons.

They rescue dogs from local shelters, dogs given up by their owners because of difficult circumstances, found strays, and those in danger of abuse or neglect. While their focus is on dogs, they also assist cats and other small animals.

Animals in their care are spayed or neutered, receive all appropriate veterinary care and treatment, and are placed in nurturing foster homes while they await placement in permanent homes. They assist dogs in distress without regard to age, breed or ease of placement. To the extent finances allow, dogs in the greatest need take priority.

Virtually every dollar raised goes directly to the care of the animals the rescue agrees to take. ROC The Dogs Rescue remains interested in and committed to the welfare of the dog beyond the adoption process and will make every effort to take back a dog that is being surrendered.

They also work with area shelters and other rescues to develop a network of supporters and volunteers in order to create a better world for homeless pets.

Vincent is a cat that was found in a Henrietta housing development, limping and with known ear damage and cuts. ROC the Dogs Rescue was notified, and provided a humane trap to rescue him safely.

Vincent was treated for severe ear mites, numerous cuts and abrasions as well as a pretty severe bite wound. He has many teeth that are broken in half due to trying to eat rocks while he was trying to survive. Fortunately, he eats just fine and has no complications with his mouth. He is estimated to be eight 10 years old, is neutered, vaccinated, combo tested positive for FIV, and micro-chipped.

Coldwater Animal Hospital provided ROC the Dogs with the guidance they needed to get him healthy again. Since there was a known bite-wound and no vaccine history, the organization had to legally hold Vincent for a minimum of six months. He is now the longest resident at their rescue house going on eight months and they would love to get him a “Home for the Holidays.”

Vincent generally gets along with all cats, except for one. That means he has been tested with over 25 cats and only showed aggression towards one. Ironically, it was an older male cat that looks very similar to him.

FIV, also known as feline aids, is a condition that, unfortunately,

is becoming very common in owner abandoned and feral cats. Vincent’s blood work shows no signs of this disease being currently active in his body.

Cats with FIV can live with other cats that are nonaggressive as long as they get along. Vincent would also be fine as a solo guy living life with his perfect human.

The organization would be happy to answer any additional questions regarding his medical history or FIV in general.

Vincent does like to play, and loves food and pets. He is a strong boy so picking him up really isn’t necessary, but those at the rescue do it daily. He does not care for his hind end to be petted much, which is common among many of cats. Besides that, he’s kind of overweight from too many treats, but a true joy to be around.

Chili woman spreading handcrafted holiday cheer

By Colleen Onuffer One Chili resident is spreading holiday cheer through cute, customized stuffed elves.

Jessa Shultis grew up watching her grandmother sew, knit, paint, make ceramics, and run a side business as a cake maker. “I was always very interested in doing all of these things with her,” explained Shultis.

Crafting and the necessary creativity rubbed off on her at an early age. By five years old, Shultis had learned how to sew. From there, her passion for the arts took over – scrapbooking, creating signs for her bedroom, and making homemade cards for loved ones and special occasions. In the seventh grade, Shultis even sewed little stuffed animals and sold them at a stand in her best friend’s neighborhood.

You can say that entrepreneurial spirit stuck with Shultis. This past summer, with encouragement from friends and family, she started crafting for profit. Through her Facebook page “Cozy Cove Creations,” Shultis offers small signs, decals for wine glasses, beer mugs, clothing in both adult and children’s sizes, customizable ornaments, and stuffed holiday elves.

“I crafted the elves this season for the very first time,” said Shultis. She uses red and white glitter vinyl to customize the elves with children’s names across the front, a snowflake on the hat, and the year on the foot. Adding a special touch, a pouch with handcrafted, holiday-themed stickers is included, along with a small card that reads “North Pole Certified.” All elves come enclosed in a gift box with festive paper shreds and sell for $10 each.

These cuddly friends from Santa’s workshop proved to be a huge hit, with Shultis selling between 60 and 70 elves in the past month. Fulfilling that many holiday orders might be overwhelming to some, but for Shultis, crafting has always been a stress reliever.

“I absolutely love crafting for myself, and I love even more that I can share this with the community.”

She’s not the only one that feels that way. One customer has ordered ten different elves to spread holiday cheer throughout the area. Another plans to donate elves to families that are strug-

gling this year. Already thinking ahead to 2022, Shultis said, “I would love to set something up where we can donate these elves somewhere next year!”

She appreciates how supportive and welcoming residents are of new business owners and crafters. “I think small businesses, in general, mean a lot to this community,” she said. Furthermore, Shultis tries to shop locally for supplies and products so that the money can stay within the region.

Aside from crafting, Shultis is a full-time nanny, full-time psychology student, and about to apply to a paralegal program in Rochester to receive her certification. Although family members jokingly ask when she has time to sleep, Shultis says she loves finding new crafts to make.

“I love the customized crafting I can do for those around me,” she said. “I think it’s so special that I can craft a keepsake or something personal for a family.”

Gates celebrates Thanksgiving with Gobble Wobble Thanksgiving is a holiday full of traditions. People love turkey and football and watching the Macy’s parade. Nine years ago, the Town of Gates added a new tradition that has become a signature community gathering for those who are willing to get up and moving early on Thanksgiving morning.

The event is called the Gobble Wobble. Best described as an informal 5K, the event begins and ends at the Gates Town Hall on Buffalo Road. A majority of the attendees fall into the category of “walkers” and are given a cue that the race will shortly begin. An eclectic mix of kids, dogs, and adults from Gates and its neighboring towns assemble at the designated start line and the walk begins. A few minutes later, another dedicated (and more athletically dressed) group lines up at the start and a countdown for the “runners” begins. Those who prefer a more competitive turkey day race have other options in the area, and so the Gobble Wobblers are groups of family and friends who come looking for a bit of exercise and leave filled with an extra dose of holiday spirit.

The Gobble Wobble also has a charitable component to it. Those who attend are generous in giving to the event’s charity of choice.

and books that were collected for Golisano Children’s Hospital.

This outpouring of kindness seems to grow year after year.

The 2021 event was won by Cody Khuns, with a time of under 19 minutes and 30 seconds. Time is only kept on a portable scoreboard off to the side of the finish line.

There is no trophy or award for the winner, but Cody’s smile that morning made it clear that he felt very accomplished in being the top finisher. Rounding out the top three were two of Cody’s fellow cross country teammates, Emmett Bachmann and Rahlin Finch.

The rest of the 100-plus runners and walkers crossed the finish line with either a smile on their face or one of tired satisfaction in having completed the 3.1-mile course. For some, running a few miles is simply another day of training. However, for others, it might be the first step in a renewed quest to become healthier (or perhaps just the rationale for eating another piece of pie).

Most people stick around for a short time to cheer on all of the finishers and warm up with some hot chocolate or coffee. There are smiles, laughs, high fives, and a small few check their GPS watches to see what their time was. A final “thank you” or “see you next year” is offered, and then everyone slowly heads off to embark on their next holiday tradition.

Gates Chili Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament proceeds benefit Gates and Chili libraries The Gates Chili Chamber of Commerce held its annual Golf Tournament on July 26 at the Brook-Lea Country Club and over 130 golfers played the links.

For the eighth year, the proceeds from the annual Golf Tournament went to the Friends of the Gates Public Library and the Friends of the Chili Public Library. Over $6,000 was donated to each library this year at a check presentation ceremony held at the Gates Chili Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting on November 16.

year’s Golf Tournament for Monday, July 25, 2022, at Brook-Lea Country Club, with proceeds again benefitting the Friends of the Gates Public Library and the Friends of the Chili Public Library.

Chestnut Ridge School second graders fly their own Thanksgiving parade balloons Inspired by the story of the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade told in the book Balloons Over Broadway by author Melissa Sweet, young readers at Churchville-Chili’s Chestnut Ridge Elementary School created their own video version of the famous parade, complete with fanciful balloons and entertaining commentary.

Second-grade teacher Jodi Piontkowski wanted students to get excited about reading and participate in a memorable learning experience. She worked with Enrichment Specialists Andrea Lynch and Stephanie Ricci to design a special lesson that incorporated reading, analysis and discussion, creative writing, art, science and engineering principles, along with collaboration skills and teamwork.

After reading the book, which tells the story of Tony Sarg, the puppeteer tasked with creating the parade balloons that made the Macy’s event famous, student partners worked together to design their own balloon animals: whimsical giraffes, foxes, flying horses, and lions, to name just a few. They decorated their balloon puppets with a variety of colorful materials, taking care not to pop them. Students also had to consider how they would control and fly their finished balloons, as they were not filled with lighter-than-air helium. Their engineering process was much like that followed by the original parade designer Sarg, who faced the same challenge in the early 1920s before helium was used in his balloons.

After much good-humored trial and error (and a few exploded balloons), team members guided each special balloon as it took flight across a green screen, soon to be replaced by a video backdrop of the actual Macy’s storefront in New York City.

Team members each wrote a description of their parade animal. They took turns recording each other’s scripts as parade day commentary. Teachers pulled the technology pieces together into a final video of the CRS Thanksgiving Day Parade, which can be viewed at https://www.wevideo.com/view/2462923992.

Pumpkin Spice Popcorn This pumpkin spice popcorn mix will get you in the mood for the holidays.

Yield: 8 Cups Ingredients 8 cups of popped corn 1/3 cup butter 3 tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon Pinch of ground ginger

Directions 1. Spread popcorn in thin layer on serving platter.

2. Melt chocolate chips over a double boiler or in the microwave. Drizzle over popcorn.

3. Melt white chocolate chips over a double boiler or in the microwave. Drizzle over popcorn.

4. Immediately sprinkle desired amount of sprinkles over warm chocolate-coated popcorn.

5. Allow drizzles to set up until firm. Serve.

Holiday Popcorn Snowman

Directions 1. Put popped corn into large bowl.

2. Melt butter and add sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.

3. Stir until sugar is dissolved.

4. Drizzle over popcorn and toss until well coated.

Toffee Almond Chocolate Popcorn With sweet toffee bits and toasted almonds, this chocolate-covered popcorn treat is definitely a crowd-pleaser.

Yield: Serves 4 Ingredients 4 cups popped popcorn 3/4 cup chopped toasted almonds, divided 6 tbsp toffee bits, divided 6 oz milk chocolate, melted 1 oz dark chocolate, melted Directions 1. In large bowl, toss together popcorn, 1/2 cup almonds and 4 tbsp toffee bits. Drizzle with melted milk chocolate; toss until well coated.

2. Transfer to parchment paper–lined baking sheet. Drizzle with dark chocolate; sprinkle with remaining almonds and toffee bits. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes or until set; break into clusters.

Tip: Substitute dark chocolate for milk chocolate, if preferred.

Yield: 10 balls, 5 snowmen (2 balls each) Ingredients 10 cups popped popcorn 1 (1-pound) package large marshmallows 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine 1 teaspoon vanilla Decorations: sprinkles, licorice, gum drops, candies, etc.

Directions 1. Melt marshmallows and butter in a large saucepan.

2. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

3. Let stand for 5 minutes.

4. Pour over popcorn and stir.

5. Butter hands well and form into balls.

6. Decorate as desired

MAKE HOLIDAY SAFETY LIST, CHECK IT TWICE We’re less than two weeks out from Christmas and by now you have finished, are finishing up or haven’t even started decorating. We don’t often think about safety when we’re decorating, but if we want to enjoy our holidays worry free, we should make a holiday safety check list — and check it twice.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, “fires occurring during the holiday season claim the lives of over 400 people, injure 1,650 more and cause over $990 million in damage each year.”

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) in a press release reminds us that fires are just as likely, or more likely, to happen as Christmas trees begin to dry out and presents, wrapping paper and unattended decorations clutter the house.

FASNY offers several good tips for your holiday safety check list.

Christmas tree •Check for dryness at the tree lot (check for falling needles).

A locally-grown tree from New York may be fresher than one brought in from out of state.

•Avoid trees that may have been painted (to improve their appearance); the paint may be combustible.

•Saw off an inch or two from the trunk to keep it fresh and if left outside, place trunk in a bucket of water. Remember to keep your tree watered once inside.

•When you’re ready to dispose of the tree, don’t leave it inside and don’t rest it against the exterior of your home or building; both increase the chance of a fire, especially with a dry tree.

Decorations •Choose flame-resistant, flame-retardant or noncombustible materials (look for designations on packages). And more lights are now more energy efficient.

•Inspect your lights, old or new; check for frayed cables or damaged or missing bulbs.

•Don’t overload extension cords, power strips or outlets; if using outside, make sure power chords are designated for outdoor use.

•For outside displays, it’s best to use timers. It not only lessens the risk of fire, but saves on your energy bills. Remember to turn off your indoor lights too.

Candles •Don’t place candles near curtains, furniture, wrapped gifts or anything that can easily ignite.

•Place them where they can’t be knocked over and if you can, weigh them down. Keep them out of reach of young children and pets.

•Extinguish a candle before leaving a room; always extinguish before leaving home or going to bed (discourage candles where you may fall asleep). It’s recommended you extinguish before it burns within 2 inches of the holder.

•Keep matches and lighters out of reach of young children.

Consider using battery-powered candles.

These tips may seem common place, but we get busy during the holidays and some of these things may go unnoticed. No one wants to spend the holidays out in the cold, in the emergency room or worse. We’re thankful to have volunteer firefighters and emergency personnel at the ready, but we don’t want to pull them away from their own holiday celebrations.

Safety first for the holidays. And while you’re at it, make sure your fireplace is Santa-ready!
