Greece Police New Drone Program Creates a Safer Community

Thanks to a COVID Relief Grant, the Town of Greece was able to obtain funding for the Greece Police Department (GPD), to launch an Emergency Response Drone Program. Three specialized police drones were purchased in late 2021. Officer Wild of GPD, took the necessary courses to became a certified Drone Pilot during the winter of 2022. According to Officer Wild, “Police drones are becoming increasingly more popular, but less than 20% of NYS police agencies have this type of technology.” In 2020, 347 law enforcement agencies in forty-three states were using drones to assist officers in the field. The number is growing, drones are proving to be a timely and cost effective tool that can help police agencies protect their communities.

Police drones can be used in a variety of settings to help fight crime, and to keep communities safe. With a quicker ‘real time’ response in vital situations, and the ability to keep officers safe by providing added situational awareness, drones have proven their effectiveness Police agencies around the country are using drones for search and rescue, traffic accident reconstruction, investigations of crime scenes and active shooter type calls, as well as to assist the K9 unit, and local fire departments. According to Officer Wild, Greece Police Drone Team pilot, “Drones can help the Greece community with calls on the water like, abandoned water vessels, missing boaters, potential drownings, finding missing children, hikers and vulnerable adults.” With the use of the drones, the response time is much more efficient compared to traditional methods like police helicopters. Drones also significantly reduce the costs associated with search and rescue. The cost to bring in a Police Air Service helicopter can exceed $500 per hour. “Drones can be especially helpful in locating missing people in wooded areas,” said Wild. They are very efficient in accident scenes, giving a bird’s eye view and accident reconstruction using specialized software. This cuts down evidence collection time, and gets roads reopened sooner.

Monroe County Sheriff Department (MCSD), began a Drone Response Team in their Special Operations Police Bureau in 2019. They expanded in 2021 with two full time Drone Pilots.

They have eight drones and have been successfully using them in search and rescue calls, fire calls and on crime scenes. Deputy Whiting of the MCSD Drone Response Team has been involved with many successful outcomes using drone technology. According to Whiting, “The drone helped locate a missing elderly person in Perinton much faster than we could of otherwise. The MCSD Drone Response Team is also used to assist fire districts.

The Brockport Fire Department worked with the MCSD Drone Response Team during the Viking Way fire that took place last year. This winter, with the help of the MCSD Drone Team, stranded snowmobiles were guided safely off the canal after a person fell through the ice.”

Officer Wild pointed out that there could be some privacy concerns associated with the use of drones in law enforcement agencies. All drone use, including police drone use, is regulated by the FAA. Misconceptions lead to concerns and fear of the technology that greatly benefits community safety. There are general orders in police drone usage that protect citizens privacy. “The use is tightly regulated by the FAA, and there are strict policies and rules on how and where a police drone can be used,” Wild said.

Canalway Challenge kicks off along New York’s canals Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor invites New Yorkers to take part in the Canalway Challenge in 2022 to trace history and track miles on the New York State Canal System and Canalway Trail. The free program invites participants to choose a personal mileage goal and then walk, run, cycle, or paddle to achieve it and receive recognition.

The Canalway Challenge is open to people of all fitness levels and offers a range of mileage options, including 1 mile for people with mobility challenges, 15 miles, 90 miles, 180 miles, and 360 miles. People can complete the challenge in one big trip or many small ones.

“The Canalway Challenge is a fun way for people to enjoy the incredible history and beauty along the waterway that transformed New York State and the nation. It’s also a great way to stay healthy, active, and motivated to achieve a fitness goal,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

The Canalway Challenge offers trip planning ideas, event suggestions, and information about sites to visit while completing miles. A dedicated Facebook group provides a forum for participants to share their experiences.

music community. Starting out as a guitar player, he soon moved over to piano. He considers the piano a percussion instrument, like a drum, and that is how he plays keyboards.

Musical influences date back to his hometown, the British village of Cranbrook, Kent. Cleary comes from a musical family.

When he was growing up, his uncle would return from his travels to America, especially NOLA, bringing back with him records he bought in the US. “My mother was fond of the New Orleans music and the records she listened to, and the records that my uncle brought home, had a profound impact on me. I really have my whole family to thank for the inspiration they provided by just gathering and playing music together. My grandmother said in the 40s music was an important part of family life and what they used to get through the hard times.”

Not only does Cleary play the music of NOLA, he has a deep, rich knowledge of the history of the city and the music. During COVID, while everyone was on lock down and live music was on hiatus, Cleary hosted the live “Quarantini Happy Hour World Tour” on Tuesday Nights, online through Facebook and YouTube.

The hour consisted of Cleary playing songs by request, answering questions from those tuning in, and sharing his personal stories from his years as a musician in New Orleans, where he has worked with music legends. Cleary also shared records from his extensive personal collection of music, treasures he found during his travels all over the world. Works by musicians who inspired and delighted him throughout his more than 40 years in music. Cleary said, “I am always engaged in the business of trying to figure out music, that’s what I do. I spend every waking moment thinking about music, even when I’m asleep I am thinking about it.”

During quarantine Cleary also hosted a Saturday morning one hour live session where he taught viewers how to play the piano. Called “One Finger at a Time,” Cleary taught the way he learned. “I taught myself to play piano, so I have that ability to teach, the way I learned.”

In some ways the pandemic was a “blessing in disguise” as Cleary put it. “I live my life on the road, and I love it, I’ve been doing it all my life. During the pandemic it was good to take a break for two years. I was able to sleep in my own bed, being grounded and having the time to work on my music was good. There is really nothing like the feeling now, of getting back on the road, and playing music again.”

The sounds of New Orleans funk, soul, rhythm and blues will fill the Dawn Lipson Canalside Stage on Wednesday, June 1, when New Orleans pianist, singer and songwriter, Jon Cleary takes the stage with his band - The Absolute Monster Gentlemen.

Cleary says, “It’s a killer band of musicians that represent different aspects of New Orleans music, playing loose and soulful R&B. I open the show with a few songs, then as a band we get a New Orleans groove on.”

Cleary’s music is rooted in 100 years of tradition in New Orleans style music, bringing together soul, funk, R&B Jamaican, Reggae, Afro-Cuban, and more. The syncopation of the music is what Cleary says defines the style of playing New Orleans music. Musical syncopation is described as, “The displacement of regular accents associated with given metrical patterns, resulting in a disruption of the listener’s expectations and the arousal of a desire for the reestablishment of metric normality; hence the characteristic “forward drive” of highly syncopated music.”

Frear’s Garden Center and Christmas Fantasyland to close After serving the Rochester community for over 93 years, Frear’s Garden Center, located at 1050 Stone Road, Rochester, is closing its doors. The property that the current operation is on has been serving the community for 130 years.

“It is with heavy hearts that due to the current supply issues, increasing costs and the damage to our facility from the windstorms sustained on March 6th, that we are closing Frear’s Garden Center and Christmas Fantasyland on Sunday, July 31, 2022,” states Warren Frear, 3rd generation owner of the garden center.

As a culmination of these factors, Warren and Lynda have decided that they have no other option but to retire and close the doors.

Frear’s has been in operation, and has been family owned since the original property was purchased in 1892 by Warren’s grandfather, Ernst Frear. The property has seen many changes over the past 130 years. Behind the current location, Frear Drive, was dedicated in the early 1960’s.

For years, Frears has been synonymous with three things, amazing, dedicated, and long-standing employees, a customer favorite local garden center, and the home of Frear’s Christmas Fantasyland. The Frear family has always had the most beautiful and extensive Christmas displays and retail selection in the region.

The current operation is still owned and managed locally by Warren Frear, his wife of 60 years, Lynda, their daughter (4th generation) Kerry Frear-Caliri and Frear’s long time General Manager John (Jay) Nicholson.

Frear’s success over the past 93 years can still, to this day, be attributed to customers supporting local community-based businesses and its passionate long standing customer base. Frear’s will start liquidating Christmas and holiday categories immediately.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the leading chronic liver disorder, now affecting 46% of American adults and some children.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, (NAFLD), is the most common cause of chronic liver failure in the United States. It is when excess fat accumulates in the liver. Over time, the liver enlarges, and liver cells are replaced by scar tissue. This eventually leads to liver malfunction, cirrhosis, occasionally to liver cancer, and sometimes to end-stage liver failure.

NAFLD is a growing disease that affects nearly one out of two Americans. It is the leading cause of liver disease in the US and is often correlated with: Type 2 Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes (Metabolic Syndrome); Obesity; Elevated levels of fat found in the blood and elevated LDL and Triglycerides; High blood pressure; Certain medications; Infections like Hepatitis; and Toxin exposures especially Glyphosate.

As obesity rates and diabetes rates in the US soar, so does NAFLD. NAFLD often goes undiagnosed since it poses few if any symptoms in the early stage. A doctor can detect liver disorder in annual blood work, like the metabolic panel, which shows liver enzymes in ALT and AST tests. If the values are elevated, then often an ultrasound is ordered and possibly a liver biopsy.

NAFLD can impair the body’s ability to remove toxins, regulate hormones and prevent disease. It is critical to maintain or improve liver health for overall health and wellness.

Here are some tips to help improve your liver health.

•Maintain a healthy weight, or lose weight if needed.

•Reduce intake of processed high carb foods especially sugar, starch, and fast foods.

•Eat optimum amounts of healthy proteins like grass fed beef, free range chicken, eggs and omega-3 rich fish, like un-farmed salmon.

•Increase healthy fats like coconut oil, omega three plant sources (ground flax seed) and walnuts.

•Eat generous amounts of cruciferous vegetables daily. Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprout, cabbage, kale and leafy greens.

•Supplement with milk thistle, NAC, dandelion root and curcumin.

•Exercise.

The good news is that healthy eating, regular exercise and maintaining a health weight are all valuable interventions that can help you prevent NAFLD, or reverse it. Greece Scout Leader accepts the challenge

Boy Scouts of America, (BSA), Troop 48, Assistant Scout Leader Jeremy Boyce, accepted a challenge from a fellow board member at a BSA fundraising meeting. The challenge was to rappel the Kodak Tower in downtown Rochester as part of the “21 Stories for Scouts” fundraiser for the Boy Scouts of America Seneca Waterways Council. “Tony Zogl knows that I am enthusiastic about life, and asked me to get a group together to participate in the fundraiser. I asked some guys that I work with at Kennedy Mechanical Contractors to accept the challenge, and we all did,” Boyce said.

“21 Stories for Scouts” gives volunteers a unique opportunity to challenge themselves beyond their comfort zone and pushes them to new limits. Volunteers represented a cross section of Rochester and surrounding counties, with business leaders, Scouting volunteers and Scouts themselves all committing to raising at least $1,100 per individual. The Seneca Waterways Council partnered with Over the Edge, a company that conducts extreme rappelling events all over North America.

In his job as a designer at Kennedy Mechanical, Boyce has worked on many of the tall buildings in Rochester. He said, “Our group was just working on the Granite Building, on East Main Street, Downtown. The Granite Building is 12 stories high. We were looking over at the Kodak Tower, which was our future quest, saying that it didn’t look that much taller. How hard could it be? We were thinking that way, until we got to the base of the Kodak Tower on the day of the rappel.”

On the big day, the group spent some time hanging out on the rooftop, looking out over the spectacular view of Rochester, a feeling that 21 stories up in the air afforded. They marveled at just how far you can see on a clear day, which it was on May 13th.

“Everything was going great for me, then came the part where they asked us to step up to the railing. My self-preservation mode kicked in, it was a very odd feeling. It was so counterintuitive to go over to the other side of the railing, dissolving all the safety rules that I practice at my job in building construction, and that I learned all through life, stay away from the railing. Once I was over the railing onto the edge, I was thinking that it was just a couple of pieces of rope holding me up here. The rappel down was a surreal feeling for the first couple of minutes, then I started looking all around and seeing just how amazing the views that were being offered were, it was the pinnacle of the descend. Time slows to a crawl,” he said.

After he was firmly on the ground Boyce said, “It was a very completed feeling. I thought to myself, I did a thing. I got out of my comfort zone and it goes beyond that because it was all for a good cause.”

Boyce grew up in the Boy Scout program. “Scouting is an invaluable experience for individuals. I am so happy to see that young ladies are also becoming involved with the program. Youth of all ages are getting into it. I learned so much in the scouting program, including outdoor skills and leadership skills that I use to this day.

I learned about surviving and enjoying being outside. I use many skills that I learned in boy scouts while camping, including first aid and keeping your wits about you. The leadership skills learned teaches you how to take charge of yourself, which is a valuable skill. It helps with direction, starting you out on the right foot in life.”

Boyce is the Assistant Leader of Troop 48. They meet at the Greece Baptist Church, and were chartered in 1928, which makes

This year’s “21 Stories for Scouts” event was a huge success with 81 volunteers rappelling the 240 feet down the Kodak Tower raising $98,000 for local Scouting outreach programs focused in the City of Rochester. “We are incredibly proud of all the hard work that our volunteers put in to reach, and in many cases, exceed their fundraising goals,” says Stephen Hoitt, Scout Executive/CEO of Seneca Waterways Council. “The experience, trepidation and excitement that a Scout feels atop a 30-foot climbing wall at summer camp is very similar to what these volunteers felt when they leaned back over the balcony, 240 feet above the ground. Thanks to the generosity of some incredible donors in our community, we were able to have a record number of Scouts rappel this year.”

The Seneca Waterways Council extends its thanks to Kodak for the use of the building, for their incredible volunteers who helped participants cycle through the event, and for sponsoring two teams of participants. An Intentional Community - Homesteads for Hope

by Barbara Burke At Homesteads for Hope Community Farm, “It’s not about growing the tomatoes, it’s about growing people.”

Jennyrae Brongo, along with her mother Luann, founded Homesteads for Hope in 2013 to address an important need in their family, a need felt by many families.

“We are here to serve people of all abilities, with and without disabilities.

We are for adults 18 years and older who graduated high school and find a void when the school bus stops. What happens to that person? There is such a shortage of services, especially since many group homes and day care services closed during the pandemic. We are about being an inclusive community; we are about participation in an intentional community. Everyone has a job here and works to their own unique abilities. We focus on what you can do.

We are open to the public, and embrace all. We are about learning and leading a purposeful life, all in nature’s classroom.

Not everyone is destined for college. We teach real-life skills, something everyone needs to sustain life,” Brongo said.

Homesteads for Hope is a 55-acre farm where people with disabilities are Volunteers filled eggs for the hunters to find. not overwhelmed by the environment.

Located at 2185 Manitou Road, the farm is 10 minutes west of Downtown Rochester, directly on the wide waters of the historic Erie Canal. Homesteads’ classroom is the great outdoors, which provides a peaceful and therapeutic environment for anyone who sets foot on it, no matter their ability level. “Many in our community have never seen a large body of water, and working next to the water opens up a whole new world. We are always outside working; nature needs us. We have no TVs, no tablets.

We are about the learning experience and a hands-on approach to developing skills, life lessons, and work education that allows students to flourish in the greater community,” Brongo said.

The Ready! Set! Work! program allows enrolled members the opportunity to learn to work in different business models on the farm. As they develop, further skills can be learned by volunteering to work around the farm. There are opportunities to work on the CSA Farm Share, in the Farm Store, at the Café, in the Office, at the Farmers Market, at the Barn Venue, and new this summer at the Harvest Pizza & Grill. “Working on the farm builds confidence, awareness, inclusion, and purpose. Parents tell me all the time that their children say this is their favorite place to be. Many parents say they could never have imagined their child could do the work they see them doing and enjoying. We teach and allow students to do real stuff; this is really life at the farm. We have 35 apprentices learning life work here, and they run the show. This is their farm; they own the place,” Brongo said.

4-H’ers: Innovators, Experimenters, Inventors Garden Club members design a water collection system Over the last ten weeks, youth from Lakeshore Elementary School have taken the lead on a garden innovation project to support their school garden. With support from the Whole Kids Foundation Garden Grant, the 4-H team, alongside Earthworks, and youth garden leaders at Lakeshore Elementary School, was able to begin a 4-H Garden Club where eight youth were selected to become garden leaders. Youth were chosen based on applications that outlined their individual ideas for a garden project as well as their reasoning for wanting to be a garden leader.

Once selected, the new garden leaders set out on a mission to research, design, and implement a water collection system that would support the functionality of the garden.

For the first five weeks, 4-H’ers participated in garden based learning activities: soil-painting, gardening in a glove, plant-need sombreros, to name a few! With these fun activities, the group was able to get to the roots of what plants and a garden need to thrive. Taking time to think and discuss as a group provided a cohesive foundation for the design and implementation of the water collection system.

The remainder of time was utilized for the water collection system project! Youth spent weeks thinking through every step of the project. From research of different water collection systems, to discussing what needs would have to be met so that the system is sustainable and stable, to designing what the system may look like on paper. Finally, the 4-H garden leaders spent their last meeting making models of what the water collection system would look like, and how it would function.

For four weeks, from May-June, the garden leaders will work alongside 4-H, Earthworks, and Lakeshore Elementary to build the water collection system, troubleshoot design issues, and see their project come to life!

The 4-H Garden Club doesn’t end there, with the start of next school year a new set of 4th grade garden leaders will observe this year’s project and discuss, design, and implement changes that need to be made with guidance and support from the 2022 garden leaders.

Tips for first time vegetable gardeners

If you have decided to plant a vegetable garden for the first time this year, or if you haven’t had a garden in a while and would like to enjoy your own, fresh, homegrown veggies again – here are a few tips.

It is always best to start small. Six feet by six feet is a good starting point for a small vegetable garden, and if you feel you need more space, consider growing extra veggies in containers. Grow what you love. Grow what you enjoy preparing. Veggies that you enjoy cooking and eating should be a priority in the garden. You can experiment with new and exotic choices after you get your

feet wet for a gardening season or two. Instead of garden beds, you can start out with just containers and a couple kinds of veggies and see how it goes. Assess how things went after the first growing season and consider expanding your garden next year.

If you grow tomatoes, peppers, or squash, once they start producing – they will continue to produce through the rest of the season. If you grow crops like carrots or corn, you will get a single harvest per plant and may want to consider succession planting – planting the same crop repeatedly over the span of several continued on page 24

Walk this way – or any way – to better health Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll through your neighborhood or a power-walk in the park, the American Heart Association says taking part in physical activity is one of the best ways to manage stress, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, and boost your mood.

Improved technology and the growing popularity of fitness applications, electronic wearables, and step counters have made counting steps an easy way to count health benefits, as noted through a growing body of scientific research. A study presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle & Cardiometabolic Health Conference 2021 (EPI), found that •Study participants who took more steps in short spurts lived longer, regardless of how many steps they had in longer, uninterrupted bouts. The benefits leveled off at about 4,500 steps a day in short spurts.

•Compared to no daily steps, each initial increase of 1,000 steps a day was associated with a 28% decrease in death during the follow-up period.

•A 32% decrease in death was noted in participants who took more than 2,000 steps daily in uninterrupted bouts.

Middle-aged people who walked the most steps-per-day had a 43% lower risk of diabetes and a 31% lower risk of high blood pressure, compared to those with the fewest steps, according to research presented at the Association’s 2020 EPI Conference.

For women in the study, each 1,000-step interval resulted in a 13% lower risk of obesity, and those with the highest step count were 61% less likely to have obesity, compared to women who walked the least.

People who took at least 7,000 steps a day had a 50% to 70% lower risk of dying compared with people who took fewer than 7,000 steps a day, according to a study published in September in the journal JAMA Open Network. Researchers found that a higher daily step count (over 10,000 steps) lowered the risk of premature death from any cause among Black and white middleaged women and men.

“Walking is a great way to improve your health and your mental outlook, and it doesn’t take a lot of expensive sporting equipment to do it. Put on a good pair of shoes and grab a water bottle and you’re ready to go,” said Donna K. Arnett, M.S.P.H., Ph.D., B.S.N., a past president of the American Heart Association (20122013) and the dean and a professor in the department of epidemiology of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health in Lexington. “It doesn’t matter how fast or how far you walk, the important thing is to get moving. Counting steps doesn’t have to be part of a structured exercise program. Increasing your everyday activity, like parking slightly further from your destination, doing some extra housework or yardwork and even walking your dog can all add up to more steps and better health.”

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. You can knock that out in just 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

And every minute of moderate to vigorous activity counts toward your goal.

Arnett points out that walking indoors at home, in a gym, or even a mall can be easy ways to get beneficial physical activity.

However, research indicates that being outdoors in areas rich with trees, shrubs, and grass (i.e., a higher level of greenness) may help reduce the risk of dying from heart disease.

weeks. You can plant sweet corn every two weeks until early July, for example, to extend your harvest. Crops like salad greens can easily be grown in containers and harvested several times before fresh seeds need to be sown. You can think seasonally – peas and radishes will grow and mature quickly for late spring and early summer harvesting. Crops like potatoes, cabbage, and winter squash will be harvested in the fall and can be stored for use throughout the cold weather months.

Crops like peas, beans, and even summer squash can be trained on trellises and grown vertically. This can help improve plant health and open up additional space in your garden for other crops.

Consider your garden layout. You can plant in narrow rows; but, you can increase your productivity by utilizing intensive cropping. Use wider rows of about four feet and space two or three plants close together in groups down the wide row. Sow seeds or place transplants so that their leaves will just touch when the plants are mature. Mix veggies with similar sizes and needs and add flowers to attract pollinators. Square-foot gardening is another form of intensive planting that involves dividing a four-foot by four-foot garden bed into one-foot squares using a physical grid such as lattice strips. Plant according to this formu-

la: one extra large plant per square; four large plants per square; nine medium plants per square; and 16 small plants per square.

The purpose of intensive planting is to make more efficient use of your garden space.

Vegetables need healthy, rich soil to grow their best. Your garden soil should be dark, crumbly and full of life. Adding organic matter – such as compost – will improve any type of soil.

Before planting, spread organic matter and any other amendments on the soil and incorporate them with a tiller or spade.

Avoid compacting the soil by not walking on it after tilling.

Rake the surface smooth and water.

Wait a few days before planting seeds or transplants.
