Eagle Scout Recognition Award An official Eagle Scout Award Presentation Ceremony was held during the Greece Town Board Meeting on Thursday, April 15, 2021. The Town of Greece Eagle Scout Recognition Medal is presented to all Boy Scouts who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in their local troop.

During the meeting, a proclamation and medal were presented to Nick Novellin who has recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop Number 48. For his Eagle Scout Project, Nick decided to pursue a project that would benefit the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong. Nick spent several hours coordinating, organizing, and helping to produce over 500 cloth masks that were needed by Golisano Children’s Hospital. During the height of the pandemic, Nick organized volunteers to sew the masks, collected them, packaged them, and presented them to the hospital. Helping the hospital was near to Nick’s heart, and he was thankful to

have the opportunity to help in a very significant way.

“It is an honor for me to present proclamations and medals to the hard working and determined young men who have shown that commitment and perseverance lead to success. Thank you for choosing a project that helped benefit and protect our essential healthcare workers,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said.

The Boy Scouts of America, one of the United States largest youth organizations, is dedicated to promoting self-reliance, courage, and patriotism among young men. Town of Greece Memorial Day Activities As far back as anyone can remember, the Town of Greece has partnered with American Legion Post #468 to honor and pay respect for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while wearing the colors of our great nation.

After initially deciding to cancel Memorial Day activities, the Town of Greece has decided to push ahead and host both a parade and a memorial ceremony and in doing so, will try to make it worthy of the sacrifices made by those who have been lost.

The Memorial Day Parade will commence at 11:00AM on Monday, May 31st, the parade will be followed by our Memorial Service at 11:45AM. For those that are uncertain about gathering at this time, a remote ceremony will be available.

6 Greece News May/June 2021 Congratulations to logo contest winner Sarah Pearlman Ventura. Sarah is an award-winning graphic designer and owns a business Perlman Graphic Design.

March 22, 2022 marks the two-hundred-year anniversary of the Town of Greece. Originally called Northampton, the Town was named after the country of Greece, which was fighting a war of independence from Turkish rule. Planning for this historic bicentennial celebration has already begun, and the Town is looking forward to celebrating Greece’s rich history as one of the largest municipalities in New York State.

In the upcoming months, the Town will begin to organize activities and events all in honor of the 200th birthday celebration.

Earlier this year, Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich announced a logo contest inviting Greece Town residents to submit original renderings for the official logo to be used to celebrate the Town’s 200th Birthday and to be used on all official literature, documentation and social media relating to the Town’s plan to celebrate this historic event.

The Town received amazing submissions from all ages – from school-aged children to seniors and everyone in between. Many designs were submitted and each one was unique, creative, and wonderful. The time and effort these individuals put into the designs was obvious. It was certainly difficult to narrow down a winner.

Town Honors Bill Selke on his 90th Birthday On April 8, 2021, the Town of Greece hosted a proclamation ceremony in recognition of Greece resident William “Bill” Selke’s 90th birthday.

Bill Selke is very active member of the Greece community, he even has an award named after him. Bill has been repeatedly recognized and awarded for his advocacy. Since retiring from Kodak in 1989, Bill has been heavily involved in the Greece community. A few of his most notable involvements have been the Greece Kiwanis Festival of Youth, the Greece Seniors Housing Interaction and Support Committee, the Two Doors Resource Center, and the Greece Planning Board.

“Bill Selke has made outstanding contributions to the Town of Greece and exemplifies both leadership and service. I am proud to recognize his character and celebrate his 90th birthday.

Family First FCU Donates to Chamber Foundation to Support Nursing Education Family First Federal Credit Union recently held a special fundraising event to support nursing education scholarships through the Greece Chamber Charitable Foundation’s Daniel E. Richardson Memorial Fund. On April 28, 2021, a check in the amount of $2,168.74 was presented by Family First Federal Credit Union CEO Tom Dambra to Greece Chamber Charitable Foundation President Michael A. Mordenga and Greece Regional Chamber President/CEO and Foundation Vice Chair Sarah Lentini in a ceremony to mark Family First’s charitable donation to support nursing education and nursing students in our community. Also in attendance to help present the donation were Family First’s Greece Branch Manager Savannah Wallenhorst and Branding & PR Specialist Sarah Reimer.

“The Greece Chamber Charitable Foundation was established to support programs that prepare individuals for success in education and business. Through the Foundation’s Daniel E. Richardson Memorial Fund we are pleased to provide scholarships to nursing students from the greater Greece and Rochester regions enrolled in the Isabella Graham Hart School of Practical Nursing and Rochester Regional Health System. These scholarships are consistent with the Foundation’s objectives and will help these students pursue their careers in nursing, while filling critical needs in our healthcare system and community. Our appreciation to Family First Federal Credit Union for their important support,” said Michael A. Mordenga, President of the Greece Chamber Charitable Foundation.

“We are so thankful for all that our healthcare workers do for us, especially during these challenging times. Preston was sworn in as the new President of the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York (AFDSNY).

Ken is a 55-year member of the North Greece Fire District, where he served 32 years as commissioner.

Previously, he served in the role of president for the Monroe County Fire District Officers Association, as well as the Western New York Law and Legislative Association.

Additionally, he served as director of Region 5 in the Association of Fire Districts for the state of New York for 10 years and is a member of the Town of Greece Fire Council.

The goal at Journey Home is to embrace loved ones on their final journey by offering them physical, emotional and spiritual care.This care is given by a dedicated team of volunteers, nurses and an all-volunteer board. Since 1999 Journey Home has had the honor and privilege of serving over 500 residents. Nestled on the corner of Vintage and Long Pond Road in Greece, residents and their families can enjoy a lovely treed lot alongside a flowing stream, providing a peaceful, tranquil setting. There is no charge to come to Journey Home, they survive solely on donations, memorials, and fundraisers, such as the $9.94 or more campaign.

According to the Director of Journey Home, Tracey Jagla, RN, BSN, “After 6 months, we are finally able to reopen and welcome residents again. It has been so difficult to not care give for those in our community. I want the community to know that we are back and about to celebrate our 22nd Year of caring in the community. Survey Winner for New Splash Pad Aqua Spout Announced During the month of April, a survey of Greece residents was held to help the Town of Greece choose the next aqua spout to be placed in the popular Wild Over Water (WOW) Splash Zone. The WOW Zone is located on the Greece Town Hall Campus to the left of the Community and Senior Center and is the region’s largest municipal splash pad.

The survey conducted on Facebook offered participants two options and prompted them to choose their favorite. The options were between a Sally Spider Aqua Spout and a Billy Box Turtle Aqua Spout. Over 400 residents participated in the survey.

“I am excited to announce the winner of the survey. This summer, you can say hello to Billy Box Turtle at the WOW Zone. With 273 votes, Billy Box Turtle won by a landslide. Thank you to everyone who participated in this survey and helped us choose the next aqua spout,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said.

How To Make Eating Healthy Stick Five tips that can help you stick to your diet

by Tami Raco Health Coach & Personal Trainer The word diet actually comes from the Greek word “diaita” which means way of life, although in the current use of the word, we often think of diet as a short term restriction of our food intake to obtain a weight loss goal. It is important to our health that we get back to thinking about our diet as a way of eating and a lifestyle versus a short-term solution to a life long goal.

Here are five tips to help you make your choice to eat healthier and more sustainable.

1. Disrupt old habits and replace with new healthier ones.

Making new habits is far more powerful than fighting old ones with your willpower. Create new habits that lend themselves to eating healthier. For example, if you are use to eating candies when watching your favorite TV show, stop the stimulus/reward of that by doing something like brushing your teeth before you watch the show or gargling with strong mouthwash. If you pick at snacks in the pantry when you are on the phone then set the rule that you talk on the phone in a different part of the house where there is no food. Changed habits can actually rewire the bad habit groove you previously formed.

2. Avoid extremes. It’s very unlikely you will keep weight off long term by engaging in short term extremes. Extreme diets typically end up rebounding with a binge and gaining more weight than that which was lost. Not to mention the damage it can do to your metabolism and immune system. Make modifications to your diet with small changes that you can build on and live with.

Think long term!

3. Pick your favorite treats and plan to enjoy them occasionally. Whatever it is that you really love and dread the thought of giving up, Don’t! Allow yourself this food item in small portions occasionally. If you love pizza then set one night per month to go out for your favorite pizza. No one food once in a while will destroy your health. It is the regular over eating of these types of foods that is destructive. So to prevent yourself from fixating on it or over eating it, schedule it in.

4. Make it harder to eat poor choice foods. Those quick to get convenience foods that are high in carbs and low in nutrients are tempting if they are right in your eye view. Either don’t buy them or put them up high in the pantry or a different cupboard where they can’t call your name. Out of sight often turns into out of mind.

5. Enjoy mealtime and the company. Food was meant to be enjoyed. Even healthy food has flavors and smells that your mind and body will enjoy. Focus on enjoying what you eat rather than mindless shoveling it in. Think about the flavors as you are eating. More importantly think about those who you eat with. In this busy society that we live in, we often lose connection to those we are closest with. Use this time to reconnect.

Remember that changing your lifestyle to a healthier one will help you manage your weight but can also significantly reduce your risk of disease and chronic illness. Reimagine RTS transit system redesign Regional Transit Service (RTS) launched Reimagine RTS, the redesign of the transit system in Monroe County on May 17, 2021. Reimagine RTS was initially planned for implementation on June 29, 2020 but was postponed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

RTS CEO Bill Carpenter said, “The design of the reimagined transit system was based on the hard work of the RTS team and the input of more than 12,000 people through surveys and more than 200 meetings and events throughout the community. The new system will be more frequent, reliable and connected and we are excited to bring it to life for our customers. I thank the team at RTS for their continued work on this project and I thank our customers for their patience and understanding as we have worked together to navigate the pandemic.”

Greece Writer Publishes Second Mystery Novel

Jeff Thrall has lived in Greece since he was five years old. He has been writing stories since he was a little boy. “My mother pushed me to read and to work on my writing. She was a farm girl from Wisconsin who really enjoyed books. She felt writing would help me throughout my entire life, and she was right. My father also thought I was a good story teller.

After he passed away I published my first novel “The Reunion” in 2005,” Thrall said.

Although Thrall has been writing for most of his life as a hobby, he really started to work on publishing his books after he retired. As a young man Thrall was in the Coast Guard. After leaving the Coast Guard, he worked 23 years for the Greece Police Department as Chief of the Special Police Auxiliary Department. The Special Police are trained as a Police reserve unit used as extra manpower for special events, emergency services, traffic control and security. He retired from the Greece Special Police in 1999.

From 1990 through 2004 Thrall studied at SUNY Brockport receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry and General Science, his Masters Degree in Education and a degree in School Business Administration.

Thrall taught Science for a few years and decided that he wanted to work in administration instead of in the classroom. Jeffrey Thrall holding his new book.

He said, “I’m really not a numbers guy, I enjoy working with people.” He left the classroom and took a job as a part-time school bus driver. Thrall worked as a bus expeditor/driver at Greece Central School District from 1990 to 2006 working his way up through the ranks.

In 2006 the position of Director of Transportation for the Churchville-Chili School District opened and Thrall applied for the job. “The job of Director for Transportation is like being the principal of the school buses,” he said. Thrall supervised a department of 130 employees, 103 school buses, and was a mediator for transportation issues that came up. Thrall retired in 2019 from Churchville-Chili School District.

After his retirement, Thrall really concentrated on publishing his books that were written throughout his working days. His writing process over the years has been very simple, he writes on Saturday mornings for about four hours. He has written four books in his series, with “The Reunion” which he self published in 2005, being the first.

Thrall’s second, and newly published novel, is in his four book series and is titled “The Superintendent.” The novel is described as, “A new mystery novel featuring murder intertwined with political

intrigue in the military. After a Navy superintendent is seriously wounded trying to stop an attack on a young girl, decorated Navy SEAL and Navy intelligence officer Jonathan Summers is tapped to take his place. Although he’s ready to retire, he is pressed into service for this one last assignment. Summers soon finds himself embroiled in all the politics surrounding the admission of one of the academy’s newest midshipmen. Additionally, he is thrust into an ongoing investigation of a series of murders that are linked to the shooting of the academy superintendent. Summers faces demons from his past that could turn his career upside down while watching an increasing body count in an expanding investigation. With a manipulating politician and a serial killer both setting their sights on him, Summers must maneuver through his assignment without dishonoring the institution he now runs.”

“Readers looking for a story with action and continuing suspense will enjoy the surprises that come with the turn of each page,” Thrall says. He adds that he hopes for readers, “To have enjoyed their escape into the world of Jon Summers and his friends.”

Writing novels is not Thrall’s greatest challenge, he says getting published is difficult, “The frustrating thing is trying to Photo above and cover by Karen Fien get published. Publishing is so restricted, just the number of books and clients looking to be published are immense. I self published my first book. For “The Superintendent” I ended up going with the pay to publish route.

I took a web course in writing and publishing. I learned so much by just doing my homework and research. I suggest to writers out there looking to get published, don’t get frustrated, just keep trying. I found that in working with a publisher I learned a lot about the publishing business. Working with editors really improved my writing skills. I am taking what I have learned from this experience and I am going to re-release my first book, “The Reunion,” improving it with all that I have learned.”

Although the four novels that Thrall has written are a series, he says you do not need to read them in order to understand them.

The novels build on the individual characters and their stories.

The fourth book in the series is actually a prequel. As for Thrall’s future writing endeavors he says, “I will keep writing as long as I can. I have other ideas and different characters to develop. I write because I love it. I want people to enjoy the story and for me that is the reward. And if they want to read the next one, I’m happy.”

Annual Arbor Day Tree Planting Ceremony Every year in observance of Arbor Day, the Town of Greece plants a tree to both honor a member(s) of the community and to promote the importance of trees for our environment. The Town of Greece has been named a Tree City USA every year since 1998 by continued commitment from the Greece Town Board, and the dedicated members of our Tree Council.

On April 29, 2021, the Town of Greece conducted the Annual Arbor Day Memorial Tree Planting Ceremony. This year’s tree was planted in memory of past Greece Volunteer Ambulance (GVA) members.

The tree planted in honor of Arbor Day this year was the Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac. This tree features dark green foliage throughout the season and produces white blossoms in early summer.

The tree is located along the Greece Town Campus Walking track on the North end of campus. The monument that is placed at the base of the tree was provided by GVA. “Today, we were proud to honor past members of the Greece Volunteer Ambulance. With GVA headquarters no longer in the Town of Greece, a part of the history can be seen and appreciated by every resident who visits the Greece Town Hall Campus.

We appreciate the service GVA has provided the Town of Greece over the past 60 years – and in particular the dedicated service of those individuals who are no longer with us,” said Supervisor Bill Reilich.

Greece Volunteer Ambulance began operation in 1959 at 867 Long Pond Road. In July of 2019, the GVA and CHS Board of Directors voted to merge their operations and close the Long Pond Road base.

Keep your garden buzzin’

by Kristina Gabalski There’s something very special about walking through the garden on summer mornings. The bees and other pollinators are busy at work in the warm sunshine gorging themselves on nectar and moving pollen from flower to flower making things like tomatoes, summer squash, and pumpkins possible. If your garden is filled with the buzzing of bees, it is a good sign; it means that you have created a welcoming environment for them.

According to Cornell Cooperative Extension Putnam County, New York State is home to more than 450 native bee species.

Imported honeybees join native bees in pollinating your garden, agricultural crops, and wildflowers. Most gardeners are familiar with honeybees and the challenges they have faced in recent years from colony collapse disorder, as well as the potential impacts on food supply.

New York State has established an interagency task force on pollinators, and one of its goals is enhancing pollinator habitat in our state. If you would like to encourage and support an abundance of pollinators and species diversity in your habitat, there are many things you can do.

Just like you, pollinators need shelter. Native bees do not live in hives and need places like dead wood and access to soil for a home. Brush piles, woodpiles, and some exposed undisturbed soil can create a refuge for native bees, CCE Putnam says.

If you would like something more aesthetically pleasing, you can make a decorative wattle fence of bent twigs. Rustic arbors and split rail fences can also provide shelter. You want something that will persist through the season. Varying the types of structures can attract a diversity of species to your garden.

Create an assorted buffet for the bees. That means flowers of varying sizes. Plants in the mint family and dill, for example, produce many small flowers with lots of nectar.

Finally, be knowledgable about using pesticides. Flowers are a food source for bees and other pollinators, and you don’t want to serve them poison. Use pesticides wisely. CCE Putnam advises to refrain from spraying flowering plants. If you have to spray, use a low-residual pesticide and spray when bees are not active.

Know the lifecycle of the pest so that you can time treatment effectively. Choose the least toxic pesticide with the shortest residual activity to get the job done. If you are using pesticides with systemic or long residual action, you may want to remove blooms from plants, and remember some systematic pesticides may be active in a plant for years.

Pictures of historic markers needed for Snap That Sign campaign The William G. Pomeroy Foundation’s Snap That Sign photo-taking campaign is back for a second year and welcomes public participation across New York State for this outdoor, family-friendly activity.

Snap That Sign is a photo crowdsourcing campaign that asks participants to help put their community “on the map” by taking pictures of historic markers funded by the Pomeroy Foundation. The Pomeroy Foundation’s website has a list of specific historic markers that need to be photographed for Snap That Sign 2021. The photo submission deadline is Monday, May 31.

Photos selected for publication will be added to individual marker listings on the Pomeroy Foundation’s interactive marker map, and will provide a greater visual context about each marker and its location.

All participants will receive a Pomeroy Foundation historic marker pin as a “thank you.”

“The response last year to the first Snap That Sign campaign was overwhelming and so appreciated,” said Deryn Pomeroy, Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Pomeroy Foundation. “We received

Gardening Tips from health.ny.gov How do I grow and harvest healthy fruits and vegetables?

Maintain good soil.

• Each year, add aged compost or manure to enrich the soil.

Also, check your soil pH – the ideal range varies from plant to plant. If your soil is too acidic, increase the pH by adding lime, available from your local gardening supply store. Rich soil with proper pH levels can make it less likely that the plants will take up harmful chemicals.

• Mulch the soil. Mulch maintains soil moisture and controls weeds. It also reduces soil splash on vegetables during rain or watering, which can reduce your exposure to chemicals in soil.

Follow these planting and gardening tips.

• If you are concerned about chemicals in the soil, consider growing vegetables in raised beds with clean soil (at least ten inches deep). Use untreated wood to make the beds. Pressuretreated wood and railroad ties contain added chemicals.

• Wear gloves when working in the garden and avoid bringing soil inside the house. Brush off your clothes and remove shoes and gloves.

• Wash up with soap and water after gardening or any time before you eat.

• Keep an eye on little ones to make sure they do not eat soil or put dirty toys or other objects in their mouths. Young children can be more sensitive to certain chemicals in soil, such as lead.

• If you are having problems with pests, try using an “Integrated Pest Management” (IPM) approach. If you do use pesticides, carefully read and follow all label instructions.

• And remember, if you plan to be outside for more than 10-15 minutes, apply sunscreen or wear protective clothes (for example, long sleeve shirt, long pants and a wide brimmed hat).

Where’s the best location for my garden?

There are many factors to consider. To start, you will want a sunny spot with good drainage. Look for an area that already has a lot of grasses and weeds.

Some areas may be a problem if they have soil with harmful chemicals. Chemicals may be there naturally or from past and present land use. Gardening can increase your chance of being exposed to these chemicals, particularly by eating fruits or vegetables grown in the soil and by accidentally swallowing or

breathing in soil particles.

If you can, pick a garden space away from roads and buildings, especially old buildings that could deposit lead paint chips and dust.

If you see signs of waste ash, oil or other waste material, consider another location. Also, avoid flood-prone areas since some rivers and streams can leave chemical-containing sediment on the land.

If you think your garden area may contain high levels of chemicals, the only way to know for sure is to test the soil through a certified laboratory. But this can be expensive and the test results can be hard to interpret. It’s better to avoid planting in those areas if possible.

Prepare to eat and enjoy!

• Always wash or rinse fruits and vegetables before eating them.

• If you are concerned about chemicals in the soil, peel below-ground vegetables, such as carrots and potatoes and those grown in close contact with soil, such as cucumbers.

• Remove outside leaves of leafy head vegetables, such as lettuce and cabbage, that may have soil particles stuck to them.
