Greece Woman Publishes First Comprehensive History of Seneca Park Zoo Tracks how the Zoo has changed and evolved during its 125 years In April, Greece resident Maureen Whalen published the first and only comprehensive history of the Seneca Park Zoo. Her book, A History of Seneca Park Zoo, traces the Zoo’s history from its beginnings around Trout Lake in the lower park in 1894 through 2013. She discusses the many changes over time, from its many years as a menagerie zoo emphasizing the entertainment value of animals to its current role as a leader in species conservation and habitat preservation. “Today,” she likes to say, paraphrasing a vintage Oldsmobile commercial, “this is not your father’s zoo.”

She writes, too, of the animals who have been favorites of zoo-goers over its twelve and a half decades. Included are Jimmy, the chimp, the most famous resident of the Zoo; Sally, the elephant who was responsible for the darkest day in the Zoo’s history; favorite polar bear pairs Penny and Nickels and Aurora and Yukon; the only orangutans that have ever resided in a zoo in New York State—Gambar and Tanora and Kumang and her three mates and offspring; and the first and only African elephants in a New York State zoo, Genny C and Lilac.

Whalen, who has been a docent at the Seneca Park Zoo since 2006, spent eight years searching through old newspaper accounts and annual reports, conducting interviews, and writing the history. The book retails for $25.00 and is currently available on Amazon.com.

Since retiring as the Branch Manager of the Charlotte Branch of the Rochester Public Library, Maureen Whalen has pursued her interests in researching local history. She co-wrote a history of the Rochester Public Library, One Hundred Years of Service.

She is a volunteer at the Greece Historical Society and Museum where she has curated exhibits on topics ranging from the Underground Railroad to Prohibition. She also performs a onewoman show, Blanche Stuart Scott, America’s First Aviatrix.

Fueling the Front Line

Concern for the difficult situation that the front line workers are in as a result of Covid-19 was forefront in the minds of sisters-in-law Melissa and Michelle Yeager of Greece. They wanted to find a way to support the heroes of the pandemic, the first responders, the medical community, doctors and nurses in hospitals and nursing homes, and also the medical support staff, the people out there risking their lives everyday. “We were searching for a way to help, much the same way many people in our community are doing. It was actually the brain child of Melissa to source snacks and drinks for frontline workers,” Michelle Yeager said.

“We wanted a safe way for a food drive where people that want to donate can be confident that they will be safe, can participate from home, and have a way to limit contact between people,” Melissa Yeager said. The result is the formation of their “Fuel the Front Line” movement. The women chose Facebook as the platform to get the word out to the community. According to their Facebook page the goal of Fuel the Front Line is, “Fuel the

Greece News May/June 2020 5 Saturday, which equals a garage full of snacks, drinks and cards for front line workers which they deliver to hospitals and nursing homes. Michelle said, “People were looking to do something good for their community. I feel like Santa Claus when we are out driving around. If we come across a nursing home we call the front desk and tell them what we are about and after the OK we go in with snacks, drinks and gifts, the workers are so happy. It really brightens their day.” The gifts are not just the snacks, but also include well wishes of support, appreciation and love that goes along with the small gifts. Both Melissa and Michelle agree that they get such good feelings from doing this work that they “want to do it for the rest of our lives.”

For people who want to get involved but don’t want to leave things on their porch, donations for Fuel the Front Line are being accepted at First Bible Baptist Church, 990 Manitou Road, Hilton and Northridge Church, 2052 Saint Paul Street in Irondequoit.

Donation items that Fuel the Front Line are looking for include: • Individually wrapped snacks (i.e. chips, nuts, protein bars, single serve cereals, fruit snacks, wrapped candy, gum, etc.)

• Cases of single-serve drinks (i.e. Gatorade, soda, iced tea, seltzer water, etc.)

• Cards and notes of thanks and encouragement – so you can get your kids involved as well.

On May 9th, Fuel the Front teamed up with The Town of Greece for their mask distribution event. The event had over 20,000 cars pass through the Department of Public Works building on Long Pond Road. During the four hour event, approximately 250,000 masks were passed out to residents. Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich volunteered his time and assisted with passing out the masks and collecting the food donations for Fuel the Front Line.

Reilich said, “I would like to thank all of our volunteers who gave up their entire Saturday to assist their neighbors – several volunteers arrived at 6:00AM to start preparing. The mask distribution event was held in conjunction with the Fuel the Frontline Food Collection Event, which was another great way for us to partner with the community in giving back to those doctors, nurses and health care professional working the front lines of COVID-19. We collected hundreds of pounds of food for our frontline workers

Front Line seeks to do just that - meet the needs of Rochester area front line healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re focusing in on food supply (packaged snacks, drinks, food delivery gift cards) and messages of encouragement.”

Melissa and Michelle devised a “Porch Pick-Up” plan where every Saturday they go out and pick up donations from community members who want to participate in the program. “People can message us through our Facebook page and leave their address with us. On Saturday mornings we do a drive by and collect the donations from the porches of the people who want to donate.

It started with just friends and then by word of mouth and social media it has grown from there,” Melissa said.

Melissa and Michelle, and with the help of some volunteers, have been collecting donations every Saturday from 8AM to Noon since mid-March, and the results are outstanding. Currently they collect approximately four car loads of donations each

who are helping COVID-19 patients in our hospitals and nursing homes. We were happy to join Fuel the Frontline founders and Greece residents Melissa and Michelle Yeager in collecting this food as a way to say “thank you” to those who are tirelessly caring for people affected by the virus.”

When asked about what they have learned through their efforts in founding and working on the Fuel the Front Line movement both Michelle and Melissa said it has impacted them greatly. Michelle said, “I think what has impress me most is how willing people are to get involved to help our frontline workers. It just shows how awesome our community is and how they band together and do something good. We are all nervous and all scared about how to handle this pandemic. This has shown me that we are capable of solidarity, working together to help others. And people also realize how the front liners are going into something risky and endangering their own health and the health of their families to help others. People are learning about the heroes in their community.”

Melissa, who is a registered nurse, said, “I think one thing is that the community is learning what health care is about. It is pretty amazing to see people rally around and celebrating the medical community for the heroes they always have been. It really gives meaning to them to help other people, to realize that pouring out of yourself fills you right back up. We have some brave people in our health care system. Not just the doctors and nurses, but also the other people putting themselves out there, support staff, the janitors, and service workers. They are the unsung heroes of this pandemic. We are doing this for them too. When Covid-19 first became an issue my biggest worry was for my friends in the ICU, the nurses and doctors. If what they were going to shoulder was too heavy. They are bearing the great burdens for all of us. I have even more respect for them than ever before, and I hope the

community continues to see them for what they really are, our heroes. During this pandemic there is the potential to polarize the community. Supporting the front liners is something we can all agree on. Everyone wants to know what they can do to help.

Encouraging unity instead of division is something everyone can align with. There is no argument about giving and sharing.”

Melissa and Michelle also commented that the May 9th food drive was held during International Nurses Week (May 6-12) which begins each year on May 6th and concludes on May 12th, which is Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Also that 2020 was designated “The Year of the Nurse and Midwife” by the World Health Organization in recognition of the contributions nurses make, and the risks associated with the current nursing shortages. They wanted to extend their best wishes to all the nurses working so hard to help us through this crisis.

Covid-19 Recovery Story

Tom, a Greece resident, became ill after flying home from a work trip on March 5th. On Sunday March 7th Tom started feeling like he was coming down with something. “I had an oscillating temperature from 97 to 99 degrees and felt fatigued,” Tom said. At the time Tom first developed his symptoms there were no known positive cases of Covid-19 in Monroe County, and the first case in New York State was just a few days prior. Tom did not feel he was at risk of having Covid-19, especially since he was not experiencing the typical symptoms that were on the news.

Tom did go to the doctor during his illness and was diagnosed with an ear infection. His initial symptoms began to subside the following week but then he said “the cough hit hard.” He went back to the doctor a second time to rule out bronchitis. Testing was not readily available, therefore he self-quarantined at home just to be on the safe side.

Meredith, Tom’s wife, was concerned that what her husband was experiencing could possibly be Covid-19. Meredith, who was diagnosed and treated for uterine cancer in August, was nervous at the thought that she might be exposed to Covid-19.

“I remember saying I can’t get sick,” she said. She was extra vigilant with hand washing and taking immunity supplements such as zinc and black elderberry. The first 12 days that Tom was home from his work trip Meredith felt fine and continued working. On March 16th Meredith’s employer, a local university, announced they were closing due to the pandemic. That day she recalls that she began to feel achy. Meredith then began running a low-grade fever, had a headache, lost her sense of taste and smell and had a mild cough. More than a week after these symptoms started she began to present with gastrointestinal illness symptoms and could not keep fluids down. She also experienced light sensitivity. Out of concern that she might be dehydrated she went to her doctor on March 27th. The doctor tested Meredith for the various Influenza strains, all the tests came back negative, so they

Meredith and Tom self-quarantined. By the time Meredith’s test was confirmed positive there were already 200 positive cases of Covid-19 in Monroe County. Meredith notified her work and no one she worked with had contracted it. Two of Tom’s coworkers who flew home with him from the meeting also became ill after the trip and were both confirmed positive for Covid-19.

“When I first heard the news that I was positive I was freaking out,” Meredith said. In hindsight Meredith now realizes, “It was not nearly as panic inducing as the news made it out to be. After experiencing the virus I feel it is appropriate to have concerns and cautions about Covid-19 but to also be educated with fact and not feed into the fear.”

The couple both agreed how different their symptoms were from each other’s and also from Tom’s coworkers’ symptoms.

Tom did his own contract tracing and is confident he contracted the virus from his return flight from Colorado and then gave it to his wife.

Both Meredith and Tom made full recoveries within two weeks.

Tom, who is an engineer, was working from home and was fortunate enough to have never missed a day of work through his Covid-19 illness. Meredith, who is also an engineer at a local university, did miss two days of work related to the gastrointestinal symptoms she had from the illness. Other than Tom’s two coworkers from the flight no one else they were in contact with contracted the virus from them, including their two college aged daughters. Both Tom and Meredith quarantined at home for the entire length of time recommended by the Health Department.

Neither needed to visit the hospital or emergency room.

The time of isolation was challenging but supportive friends made it better. Friends and their church community reached out and checked on them. “Some friends from Lakeshore Community Church came out and chalked messages to us on our driveway as we watched from our windows,” Tom said. Meredith’s advice to others in this challenging time of fear is, “Get the facts from a reliable source. If you hear something on the news be sure to verify from the original source. If you do get COVID-19, or suspect you have COVID-19, do the right thing —Rest, Fluids, Time, and Isolation.”

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich It has certainly been a crazy time – both here in the Town of Greece and throughout the world. I would like to take a moment to recognize our outstanding community and the ways in which we prevail, stand strong, and come together to help one another during difficult times.

In our efforts to assist those in need in our community, the Greece Town Board and I partnered with the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf to hold a Drive-In Drop-Off Food Collection Event at the Greece Town Hall Campus. I would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped out with the food drive and I would also like to thank all those who donated to help those in need during these uncertain times. There are many people in our community that depend on a helping hand. I am always humbled to represent a community that comes together in times of challenge. We collected thousands of pounds of food and over $4,000 during this event!

This past month, the Greece Town Board and I held two Mask Distribution Events for Greece residents. I would like to thank all of the volunteers who came out to help distribute masks to residents. Thousands of people came out during the two events to receive these free masks. The mask distribution event was held in conjunction with the Fuel the Frontline Food Collection Event.

We collected hundreds of pounds of food for our frontline workers who are helping COVID patients in our hospitals and nursing

homes. We were happy to join Fuel the Frontline founders and Greece residents Melissa and Michelle Yeager in collecting this food as a way to say “thank you” to those who are tirelessly caring for people affected by the virus.

As you are aware, American Legion Post #468 Commander George Dadson, Jr. and I made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony.

As far back as anyone can remember, the Town has partnered with the Post to honor and pay respect for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while wearing the colors of our great nation. As the son of a twice-wounded WWII vet myself, I know the importance of this day and the lifelong impact the loss of these fine men and women takes on a family and an entire community. God Bless our men and women on our front lines. Thank you all for your understanding of this difficult decision the Commander and I had to make. The Commander and I did perform a virtual Memorial Day Tribute in honor of all those who sacrificed for our country – I hope you were able to view the tribute. Furthermore, the Town once again purchased flowers to be placed at the gravesite of Fallen Veterans. Volunteers from the American Legion Post #468 planted the flowers and erected American Flags at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery and also at the Flag Pole near the cemetery on Latona Road and Ridge Road. This partnership has gone on for over 20 years. The Town treasures our fallen soldiers and was honored to once again pay tribute the week before Memorial Day. Greece Police Partake in Birthday Parades During Pandemic

It is becoming a familiar sight in many towns, especially in Greece, birthday parties are being replaced by birthday parades. You might recognize this new trend of celebrating a special occasion when you see streets lined with cars, signs, sirens Sgt. I am going to say it again this spring, “Lake Ontario is the best place in the country to catch big brown trout!” Anglers chasing browns here in the spring have a good chance to catch a trophy right on our shorelines of the big lake.

Whether it be in a boat or from shore, the numbers and size of the fish you can catch on the right day is impressive to even the most traveled angler.

For the best way to go about contacting these spring browns, I checked in with Brandon White. Brandon, along with Captain Kip Mammano, operates Rochester Sport Fishing Charters. Brandon was gracious enough to email me some tips on how to target these early shallow water trout. Here is what Brandon sent me. “Spring is here, boats are out, and the fish are hungry. Just because they’re hungry does not mean they want the whole enchilada in one bite! Don’t overlook your smaller baits this time of the year. Our go-to spring salmon and trout bait in shallow water is the 3.5-inch Yo-Zuri crystal minnow and even the 2.75-inch version.

The warmest water is most consistently found close to shore and getting as tight to shore as possible is our goal.

I’m talking less than ten feet of water. During the spring season, we rarely break the twenty-foot mark and typically stay in the teen depths, with our planer boards cruising under ten feet. In most cases, I want my planer boards within inches of docks if possible! This goes for you shore anglers as well. Casting the crystal minnow from piers, docks, etc. is a great way to get at these same fish. On a breezy day or a situation where you want more casting distance, bump up to the 4.375 crystal minnow for a little added weight and distance.

Fishing such shallow water can easily spook fish, here are five ways we combat this. #1 – Get your lines away from your boat, send your planer boards out there! (But be courteous to other boaters) #2 – Increase your lead length. Instead of running your baits 100feet back, run them at 125 to 150-feet. #3 – Run a lighter fluorocarbon leader. In the summer we use 20 lb.

Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon, instead, tone it down to a 15 lb. leader. #4 – Run a longer lead-

This increases stealth and gives us plenty of leader to retie due to wear and tear. #5 – Fish “dingy water!” We are looking for “Pea Green Water.” If you can see the bottom, the fish can see you, find a different spot. On the other hand, DO NOT fish “Chocolate Milk.” If it looks like you just ordered a chocolate smoothie, they can probably not see your bait. Again, find a different spot. Search until you find the muddy water mixing with the clear water.

Salmon and trout typically hit very ferociously this time of the year because they are so hungry. To reduce foul hookups, and increase our landing percentage we typically remove both stock hooks and replace them with a single #4 treble hook on the back only. This will also reduce the number of snags we encounter, as the bill is diving deepest and the rear hook is sitting just a touch higher. Our go-to colors in the spring are as follows: Holographic Red Head, Hot Tiger, Holographic Perch, and Candy.”

I want to thank Brandon for passing on some of his hardearned expertise. The guy knows his stuff. He can also take you bass fishing in the Finger Lakes when the restrictions lift and the season opens.

As far as this monster that has come to wreak havoc, we have wrestled the beast down, but it is far from dead.

Now let us not let it up again by getting too careless. Social distancing is the key, though admittedly hard to do in a boat. So, pick your fishing partners carefully. Shore fishing for browns can be very good this time of year, but again, give each other space. As the great philosopher, Moe Howard, often said, “Spread Out!” (For those under fifty please Google)

Pizza Shop Prepares Long Before Shutdown Orders Frank and Mary Presciutti, owners of Russo’s Pizza located in Greece, have been in the pizza business since 1976. The same year they got married.

They have worked together for most of those 44 years. They have always prided their establishment as a step ahead when it comes to safety and public health. Frank recalls back in the 60’s pizzerias would use a plywood table with holes for pizza topping containers to make their pizzas. That was the standard back then. “In 1976, when we opened our first pizzeria in Chili, I decided that the pizza prep table should be refrigerated” Frank said. There were no refrigerated pizza prep tables at the time, so out of concern for health and safety, Frank had one custom made by a local fabricator. Perhaps the first person to do so in the Monroe County area, and years before the Health Department decided that it was a good idea. Frank designed the kitchen in their current location himself with several path areas to get around the equipment. At the time, his goal was to have a kitchen that could have up to fourteen crew members move around freely during the Super Bowl; a day much, much busier than any other. Of course, that makes a lot of room for his usual crew of three to seven people.

As far back as March 11th, Russo’s Pizza has taken steps to deal with the corona virus situation. Immediately they turned off the heating and air conditioning unit to preventively avoid transmission of the virus through the duct system. The following day, seven days prior to New York State requiring restaurants to close for dine in, Frank closed the dining room and made about 480 Sq. Ft. available for social distancing. He also designated the main entrance door for customers to come in, and the dining room door as the exit door, eliminating close contact between customers while coming in and leaving. By March 16th, a plastic shield was placed at the pickup counter to prevent the possibility of transmission of the virus. Every morning Frank and Mary sanitize, making the pizzeria safe for their crew and for their patrons.

Nobody was allowed in the kitchen except for the crew. If anyone on the crew showed signs of any sickness whatsoever, they were excused from work. Russo’s has three phone lines and each phone has a dedicated employee to take orders from, reducing the possibility of using shared phones.

“We have been ahead of most other businesses in our actions to safeguard against the virus. It’s called common sense!” Frank said.

After sanitizing their store and preparing to open, Frank and Mary make two to three meals for people and bring it to them.

They do this almost every day. So far they have provided meals for over 200 people including the staffs of the intensive care units at Rochester General and Unity Hospitals.

Frank, Mary and the team at Russo’s want to thank their many patrons for supporting them during this difficult time. The Russo’s team will be there to provide you with a safe environment, a high quality product and friendly service. The Presciutti’s Christian Faith teaches them to be an example to others and to be servants to others. “God gives strength, wisdom and peace to those who ask. With His help, we will all get through this difficult time.”

8 Easy Ways to boost your immune system naturally

Although there is no single food or supplement that can keep the flu and viruses at bay, there are some ways to boost your immune system naturally and help give you a much better chance to fight viruses.

The best line of defense comes from making a choice to live a healthier lifestyle. Very simple steps can help keep your immune system strong and healthy. Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and boosted by healthy-living strategies such as these: Sleep: Lack of sleep can affect your immune system negatively.

Studies show that people who don’t get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus. Lack of sleep can also affect how fast you recover if you do get sick. During sleep, your immune system releases proteins called cytokines which help your body fight infection or inflammation. Sleep deprivation decreases production of these protective cytokines How much sleep do you need to bolster your immune system? The optimal amount of sleep for most adults is seven to eight hours of good sleep each night. Teenagers need nine to 10 hours of sleep. School-aged children may need 10 or more hours of sleep.

Exercise: Regular exercise is a pillar of healthy living. It improves cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure, helps control body weight, and protects against a variety of diseases and helps maintain a healthy immune system. It may contribute even more directly by promoting good circulation, which allows the cells and substances of the immune system to move through the body freely and do their job efficiently.

Wash your hands: One of the most powerful weapons against the new viruses is summed up in a three-word phrase you first heard from your mother: wash your hands. Hand-to-face contact has a surprising impact on health. Germs can enter the body through breaks in the skin or through the membranes of the eyes, mouth and nose.

Regular hand washing can reduce your virus transmission by over 20%.

Stress: If you’re stressed out, you are more likely to get sick. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine actually found that higher psychological stress levels resulted in a higher likelihood of

catching the common cold and other viruses. The researchers accounted for many variables including the season, alcohol use, quality of diet, exercise, sleep and levels of antibodies before exposure to the virus. The conclusion is that higher stress was to blame for lowered immunity and higher infection rates.

Boost your intake of vitamin A and B: Experts have long known that vitamin A plays a role in infection and maintaining mucosal surfaces. Vitamin A deficiency is associated with impaired immunity and increased risk of infectious disease. There is evidence that Vitamin B enhances resistance to bacterial infections and helps improve immune function. Most good multi vitamins will have both the A and the B complex.

Vitamin C is proven effective: For years, dietitians and nutritionists have been well aware of the immune-boosting qualities extra vitamin C can provide. Vitamin C is perhaps best known for its ability to strengthen the immune system. But this potent nutrient also has many other important roles that control significant aspects of our health. Vitamin C helps manufacture collagen, which is used to heal wounds more quickly and support the walls of blood vessels, lessening your risk of stroke and heart disease. You can find vitamin C in citrus fruits and juices, broccoli, bell peppers, potatoes, strawberries, tomatoes, brussels sprouts and spinach.

Have some zinc: Zinc has also been found to help ward off sickness by boosting the immune system. In fact, experts note that one of the most common immune deficiencies are lowered levels of zinc. Pumpkin seeds and lean beef and oysters are rich sources of zinc. I personally take 50 mg of a zinc supplement at the earliest symptoms of a virus and have excellent results in preventing a full blown viral illness.

And finally, eat well: A good, balanced diet rich in natural foods goes a long way to helping boost your immune system, if for no other reason than to provide many of the very vitamins and minerals recommended here.

by Kristina Gabalski Perhaps spring might finally be here? If we can’t start planting our tender annuals and vegetables, we can be working to make sure they have the best soil in which to grow. New York State observed Compost Awareness Week May 3 through 9, and gardeners should remember that adding organic matter is the single most important step to improving your soil structure and overall health. Organic matter improves any soil type by stimulating or feeding the life of the soil. Nutrients are provided to bacteria, fungi, earthworms, and other organisms. Why is this important?

Because those organisms recycle nutrients into forms that are readily available to plants to absorb through their roots.

Organic matter can be added to your garden in many ways - the sheet method, the trench method, and in-place composting are three examples. Adding organic matter to your garden should be an ongoing process - the more organic matter, the easier your gardening work is in the long run because you are always helping your soil structure.

Many gardeners make compost from food and yard waste, and it is one of the best ways to add organic matter to your soil. But what are the best ways to use compost?

According to Cornell Cooperative Extension, compost can be used to establish planting beds, improve soils, mulch gardens or landscape plantings, as part of backfill when you plant trees, shrubs, and perennials, for establishing or top-dressing lawns, sidedressing vegetables, or controlling erosion. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation says you can even use compost for your houseplants. Use one-half to one-third of compost for your container volume instead of soil when you pot plants.

One of the challenges of using well-matured compost is that most gardeners never really are able to make enough to meet their needs. You will probably need to prioritize from year to year or plan to purchase bagged compost. You can also consider alternative methods for adding organic material (a good topic for another column). In any case, most mature composts can be used in most planting situations without serious concerns for

precise amounts.

Cornell Cooperative Extension offers a formula to calculate how much compost you will need to cover the area with one inch (or whatever your preferred amount) of compost in a season. As an example - to apply one inch of compost over a 10’ by 10’ area, you’ll need about eight cubic feet - or 300 pounds of compost!

Again, no matter how much compost you have, it’s always a good practice to add it to your soil.

To apply compost, incorporate it into the top six to eight inches of soil in planting beds. You will need greater amounts of compost if you are preparing beds for trees and shrubs. Compost can also be applied as a mulch over the soil surface and even layered under other landscape mulches like wood chips to improve the soil without working in the compost.

Compost may even help to suppress specific soil-borne diseases and plant pathogens in lawns. You can incorporate it with planting soil when establishing a lawn, or use as a top dressing in an already established lawn and then water into the top layer of soil.

Of course, compost is great for vegetable gardens and can be added before planting and worked into the soil, or as a side-dressing a month or two after planting. Dig compost in next to growing plants. Compost can also be used as a mulch in the vegetable garden.

Compost can be added to a sloped area to increase the soil’s ability to retain water and discourage run-off.

Invasive Giant Hornets Now a little something about the “murder hornets” we are hearing so much about right now. Yes, this is a very large insect - Vespa mandarinia, native to Asia, is the world’s largest hornet at 1-1/2 to 2 inches in length.

These invasive hornets pose little threat to people in most parts of the United States. They also don’t survive cold winters, as they come from temperate and subtropical The Asian Giant Hornet. They are insect predators, and according to the University of Minnesota Extension, a group of 30 V. Mandarinia can kill a colony of 30,000 honey bees in under four hours. However, the invasive hornets are not expected to be seen outside of an area within 50 miles of Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2020, and UM Extension is advising people not to kill large wasps. There are a wide variety of native wasps in varying sizes, shapes, and colors that are beneficial and help control populations of pest insects as well as act as pollinators. Native wasps, which we are likely to see when the weather starts warming up, are not a threat and should be left alone, including bumblebees, which are native and threatened with extinction.

It is with great sadness that I will be pulling the plug on the Street Machines of Rochester’s 46th Annual Outdoor Show. With all the uncertainty of what the new normal will be and with all the parades, festivals and carnivals being cancelled for this year, I cannot in good conscious continue to expect that we could do it. We do not know what the new normal will be after May 15th and I would think the social distancing of some sort will still be in place. I do not want to risk our member’s or the public’s health.

I would like to put our efforts into making next year a bigger and better show. Maybe at some point this year, when possible, we could do some sort of “Cruise In” to bring everyone together.

Again, it is with great regrets, but I feel we as a club need to be responsible citizens and not put anyone at risk.
