Gymnasts Compete in Regionals and Qualify for Nationals Four members of the Bright Raven Gymnastics Team have qualified to advance to the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Men’s National Championships. The boys qualified for Nationals by earning high all around scores at the USAG Region VI Championships held April 6-7, 2019 in Landover, Maryland where they competed against gymnasts from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia in addition to New York.

Justin Ciccone, 15, of Greece competed in the Level 10 Junior Elite Division and placed third in floor exercise, pommel horse, vault and all around. Justin was the youngest and one of just ten boys to qualify for Nationals in the Level 10 Junior Elite Division.

Teammates, Ryan Dugan, Ethan Rio and Cole Pringle also qualified to advance to the Level 10 National Championships to be held in Reno, Nevada next month.

As a team, Bright Raven took 2nd place in the Level 10 age 15-16 division.

K9 Chip Recognized at Town Board Meeting On April 16, 2019 at the Greece Town Board meeting a very special member of the Greece Police Team was recognized. After seven years of service to the Force, K9 Chip is retiring. Chip’s retirement and outstanding service to the Force was recognized and commended during the meeting.

K9 Chip was originally purchased from Shallow Creek Kennels in Pennsylvania. He is trained and certified as a NYS Duel-Purpose K9 in Narcotics and has worked as a Narcotic K9 and also as a Human Remains Detection K9 for the past five years. Benefits of Juicing

by Tami Mungenast CPT CNWC CES According to the Centers for Disease Control people should consume 2-3 cups of vegetables a day to help lower risks for preventable diseases. Sadly only 1 out of 10 Americans actually consume that daily amount. Eating your veggies close to raw is always the best way to maximize the health properties, but to increase your daily vegetable intake juicing can be extremely beneficial. By adding the nutrients of juiced veggies to the vegetables you do eat you can easily increase your vegetable intake and reduce your risk for illness.

Often when people think about juicing they think about fruits, but there are several vegetables that produce a good juice yield, and they are pleasant to drink and rich in antioxidants and micronutrients. Cucumbers, celery, carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli, beets and kale can yield an excellent and tasty juice base. Juicing these vegetables is beneficial because you are increasing your consumption of raw food products. When you bake, boil or stew vegetables you can lose powerful antioxidants and nutrients.

A 2016 study in the Journal of Current Research in Nutrition and Food Science showed that vegetables like beetroot typically lose nutrients when pickled or cooked, meaning that raw beetroot and beetroot juice helps you get more of what your body needs for good health. Juicing helps the body absorb all the nutrients from the vegetable juice. This is especially important because most of us have impaired digestion as a result of making unhealthy food choices over the course of our lifetime.

This limits the body’s ability to absorb all the nutrients from the vegetables. Juicing will help “pre-digest” them to receive most of the nutrition. It also allows us to add a much wider variety of vegetables and plants into our diet. If you are like me, I eat the same vegetable salads every day. But with juicing, you can juice a wide variety of vegetables that you may not normally enjoy eating whole. I never ate beets until I began juicing them! Juicing is not meant to replace eating whole vegetables but to help add vegetables to your intake. Eating the whole vegetable is very important for the fiber which helps regulate your digestive system as well as blood sugar. Eating the vegetable whole can also help you feel full vs drinking a vegetable juice.

A good quality juicer machine can be purchased for approximately $150 and is a very good investment to your health. It’s always best to juice organic vegetables and fruits to avoid consuming unhealthy chemicals used in growing. If you can’t get fresh, be sure to clean the veggies before using. Fresh juice can be bottled in glass and refrigerated for a few days and still retain much of its healthy properties.

Turn your vegetable juice into a power house protein smoothie for a healthy meal replacement or snack. To do this, I use 6 ounces of fresh vegetable juice, add ice, organic baby spinach, berries, a high quality protein powder, and some ground chia/flax seed to blend for a delicious protein smoothie. Kids Road Atlas Distributed by Rotarians Greece Rotarians introduced a new version of their extremely successful dictionary program. This year, for the first time, third grade students in the Greece and Hilton School districts received The Kids Road Atlas, (replacing the dictionary) giving teachers new and exciting opportunities for curriculum connections. The program for distri-

bution features a magic show from Rotarian Bill Gormont and a visit from Senator Joseph Robach, who assists with project funding through a NYS Grant. The program involves all Greece Rotarians, as there are many presentations over a two week timeframe.

Tips for Parents: Going Out Checklist

by Tami Raco As the nice weather approaches and kids are on break from school, families often head out for some family fun at amusement parks, movie theater, the mall or other public places. Use this checklist provided by National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to make your outing safer.

•Review your safety rules: Make sure your children understand the basic rules of safety – check first before going anywhere; take a friend everywhere you go; tell people “NO” if they try to touch or hurt you; and tell a trusted adult if anyone makes you feel sad, scared or confused.

•Plan for emergencies: Look at a map of the facilities and locate information booths or customer service centers.

Carry recent pictures of your children in case they get lost.

You can even take a picture of them on your cell phone just before leaving.

•Charge your cell phone: Check that your cell phone is charged and your children have the number memorized.

Consider giving older children a cell phone of their own so you can reach them more easily.

•Pay attention to clothing: Remember what your children are wearing so you can describe their clothing to staff members in case they are lost. Tip: If your children are wearing bright colors, they will be easier to spot in crowds.

•Identify adults who can help: Teach younger children

The Street Machines of Rochester Attend Greece Town Board Meeting for Special Presentation Members of the Rochester Street Machines, including Frank Butera, Richard Windhauser, Joe Zarcone, Tim Smith, Roy Hovey, and Dan Lavell attended a Greece Town Board Meeting in April for a special presentation. They presented the Town with a check in the amount of $1,000 to be used towards upcoming programs. They also presented Greece Parks and Recreation Director Peter O’Brien with a plaque thanking him for his dedication to keeping our local parks safe and beautiful.

The Street Machines of Rochester is composed of socially active car enthusiasts from across Western New York. Every year they host the Outdoor Auto Show, and some of the proceeds collected from this incredibly popular event are donated to such organizations as the Greece Volunteer Ambulance and the Greece Special Police. They are constantly looking for ways to give back to the community – whether it be by ringing the bell for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign or by visiting a local nursing home during the holidays to bring cheer to residents.

“The Town of Greece is very thankful for the generous donation the Street Machines of Rochester made to benefit our programs, activities, and facilities. We truly appreciate the many ways in which the members of the Rochester Street Machines give back to the community,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said.

The Town of Greece Announces Updates to Basil Marella Park The Town of Greece announced to residents that plans are in place to improve the Basil Marella Park athletic spaces.

The plans will focus on improving the soccer and football fields as well as the disc golf course. Improvements began in the Fall season of 2018 with the fields being aerated and over seeded to encourage thicker grass growth. In addition, crew members cleared many down branches and trees that fell along the disc golf course. New bleachers were also purchased for both the soccer and football field.

This Spring season, new soccer goals will be placed on two fields with plans to purchase additional replacements in the coming years. The Town is also excited to accept new soccer goals purchased by the Greater Greece Soccer Club.

“Basil Marella Park is one of the most heavily used parks in Greece for athletic activities. I am excited for the planned updates to the park this Spring Season. Our local parks help to make Greece a great place to live, and I am always excited to enhance these beautiful areas to make them even more enjoyable for our residents,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said.

Community Schools Care

by Barbara Burke On March 27, 2019 the public was invited to learn firsthand about the involvement of the Greece Central School District in the Community Schools Program at an event showcasing how Community Schools are great for kids, families and communities.

The event was hosted at Longridge Elementary School, 190 Longridge Avenue, Greece, by Kelly Sperduto, Teacher on Special Assignment for Community Schools. This awareness program gave community members, business executives, elected officials, service organizations, parents and volunteers the opportunity to learn about the Community Schools partnerships between the Greece Schools and their communities.

The Community Schools strategy was developed in conjunction with ACT (A Community Together for Education) and the Learning First Alliance.

In addition to Longridge Elementary School, other participating Greece Schools include English Village Elementary School and Lakeshore Elementary School.

The Community School concept incorporates the idea that a community school is a place where partnerships between the school and community organizations members are set in place to benefit students and families. Together they place a focus on academics, services, support and opportunities for students and families. This combined involvement leads to improved student learning and results in stronger and healthier students, schools, families and communities.

During the 30 minute presentation, the Greece schools involved in the Community Schools program showcased

the progress that has been made in incorporating this concept into their schools. The strategy involves identifying individual needs of the schools, students, families and the community and meeting these needs through a combined effort of all of the participants. The objective of the program is to create equitable access and opportunities for all students through expanded learning opportunities, early childhood development, integrated health and social services and family and community engagements.

Currently the Greece Central School District Community Schools Program has over 90 community partnerships and the number is growing. These partnerships provide professionals, teachers and volunteers that conduct the after school and evening programs and mentor and advise students through the programs they participate in.

Programs are incorporated before, during and after school and currently one half of the students participate in these programs. The main focus is to build deep connections between the school, the families and the community through healthy lives clubs built by using the community strengths. The result is stronger communities, schools, students and families.

Some of the many programs available at Longridge Elementary include: Gardening, Chess, Reading, Cooking & Nutrition, Yoga, Boys and Girls Sports, Little Helpers and Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

Community members are also encouraged and welcome to help as volunteers and sponsors. Volunteers who have a few hours to give, and have a love for kids, can help with special events both during the school day and in the evening. Financial support and donations are also needed and appreciated in order to continue the programs and sercontinued on page 19

vices. Opportunities for volunteers and sponsors include the adopt a garden program, foster grandparenting, after school social clubs, in classroom libraries and for the school backpack program that sends backpacks filled with nutritious food home with students for weekends and over school breaks.

After the formal presentation student volunteers were assigned to take the attendees on a tour of the programs that were in session.

Our tour included: •The Reading Program - Staffed by volunteers from Hope Church. This program encourages students to bring in their favorite books to read. The program is for second through fifth graders. Every week features a different book. Students take turns reading from the book and are supported by the Hope Church volunteers.

•Little Helpers - This program teaches children to participate in community service. The goal of Little Helpers is to, “Help people, not just in our school, but also in the community.” On the day of the visit students in kindergarten

GreeceNewsNY.com May 2019 19 through fifth grade were making book markers with positive affirmations that are given to students that are going through a difficult time or having a tough day. They were also making dog chew toys for the dogs at Lollypop Farm.

Other projects include Hope Rocks and Hygiene Packages.

•The Kung Fu Club - The major focus of this club is to help with character development and leadership through the teachings of Kung Fu and personal fitness. Master Instructor Paul Gruschow has headed up the program for the past two years and said the focus is on the kids earning a belt through self discipline, leadership skills and character development.

•The Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program - This after school program teams and older student with a younger student with the older student in the mentor position helping the younger with support, encouragement and guidance through a one-on-one relationship.

Linda Clifford Memorial Jamboree scheduled for Sunday, May 5

Dick Clifford is preparing for a the third annual Memorial Jamboree at the Brockport Elks Lodge to honor his wife Linda who passed away three years ago from throat cancer.

April 29, 2016 Linda passed away, taking a piece of her husband’s heart with her. Linda was a high-spirited, loving woman who touched many lives in the local community.

Linda first became ill in the fall of 2015 and was diagnosed with throat cancer.

Linda underwent treatment at the Wilmot Cancer Center under the care of Dr. Matthew Miller. The staff at Wilmot treated Linda like a queen and Dick like a king. “Everyone from the receptionist, coordinator, nurses and doctors, all the way up to the chief of staff, were absolutely amazing.

They made a horrible time much more bearable,” Dick said.

Although the aggressive cancer took Linda’s life, Dick is passionate about keeping her legacy alive by giving back to the Wilmot Cancer Center in the hopes of helping others suffering from cancer. The couple regularly went out to enjoy music and have a good time, so after Linda’s death, Dick had the idea of holding a Jamboree in Linda’s memory.

The first Memorial Jamboree took place in May 2016 and was successful in raising money for local cancer research.

Dick was grateful for the community’s support and was especially appreciative of having the opportunity to celebrate Linda’s life with those in the community.

Due to the success in raising money for Wilmot Cancer Center and the opportunity to cherish Linda’s life, Dick is holding the third Memorial Jamboree on May 5.

Dick attended a special reception for donors held by the Wilmot Cancer Center. He learned that the $10,000 that he donates each year from all proceeds of the jamboree is nearly quadrupled in research grants used locally at the Wilmot Cancer Center. “Even though we are little people we are making a difference,” Dick said.

This year’s jamboree is billed as “The Show of All the Shows.” It is Sunday, May 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Brockport Elks Lodge, 4400 Sweden Walker Road. There will

be live entertainment from 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Buckle Up country music band kicks off the entertainment, followed by Boone’s Farm Band at 1 p.m. Feature performer Terry Buchwald presents his “Tribute to the King” from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. “A” Blues Band will close the evening. Happy the Clown will entertain attendees of all ages from 1 to 5 p.m. There will be food and drinks available, a Chinese raffle and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $15 for ages 12 and up; free admission for children under 12, police officers, veterans, firefighters and guards.

Town of Greece Partners with North Greece Fire District During the meeting of the Greece Town Board on Tuesday, March 19th, 2019 the following item was on the agenda: Authorization to enter into an intermunicipal agreement with the North Greece Fire District whereby the Town will permit the District to use the Town’s diesel fueling facilities and will receive reimbursement for the District’s fuel usage. Further, authorization for the Supervisor to execute any necessary documentation.

Supervisor Bill Reilich and Greece Town Council Members Mike Barry, Josh Jensen, Bill Murphy, and Diana Christodaro are pleased to announce that the motion passed. The North Greece Fire District may now use the Town’s fueling facilities located at the Department of Public Works. The Fire District will be reimbursing the Town for its fuel usage.

The North Greece Fire District serves a large population in the Town of Greece. The department is composed of both volunteers and career firefighters who dedicate their time to providing outstanding service to our community.

“When representatives from the North Greece Fire District approached me with concerns that the School District was no longer in a position to provide diesel fuel for their vehicles, I immediately began researching how the Town could be of assistance. This approval of the intermunicipal agreement with the North Greece Fire District is an example of how local government can work more efficiently through shared services. I am pleased that the Town is able to assist in making sure the District’s fire service vehicles remain ready to protect our residents,” Town Supervisor Reilich said.

Most of his other projects received little attention as Johnson quietly followed his own highly creative path, designing buildings of remarkable creativity inspired by forms in nature and complex geometry. Christopher and Katie spent 18 months exploring Johnson’s drawings and slides, interviewing his colleagues and family members, and visiting his buildings, They will be sharing what they learned in this talk featuring new and old photographs of Johnson’s projects, from his most celebrated works to some of the strangest hidden architectural treasures in western New York.

The project documenting Johnson’s career was organized and sponsored by the Greece Historical Society, and was funded by grants from the Preservation League of New York State, the Landmark Society of Western New York, and the Johnson family.

An official Eagle Scout Award Ceremony was held on April 15, 2019 at the Greece Town Board Meeting. The Town of Greece Eagle Scout Recognition Medal is presented to all Boy Scouts who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in their local troop.

At the meeting a proclamation and medal were presented to Carter Jansson who recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop Number 267. In order to complete his Eagle Scout project, Carter chose a project that would benefit the Rochester Refugee Resettlement Services. He organized a group of volunteers to paint the interior of a house in preparation for a family from Somalia to be able to move in. Over 30 volunteers and 150 hours of time and effort were dedicated towards completing this project.

“It is an honor for me to present proclamations and medals to the hard working and determined young men who have shown that commitment and perseverance lead to success. Thank you for your efforts towards a project that will make new members of our community feel loved and welcomed,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said.

We are in full planning mode here at Greece Town Hall as we organize all of our popular Spring and Summer events. Make sure to mark your calendars for our annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27th. Also be on the lookout for details about our Jerry J. Helfer Memorial Food Truck Rodeo, Greece Summer Concert Series, and the beloved Old Fashioned 4th of July event.

This past month, our Greece Town Board Members and Greece Receiver of Taxes participated in the March for Meals Campaign, which is part of the Meals on Wheels Program. They spent the morning volunteering with representatives from the UR Medicine Home Care Program to deliver meals to senior citizens in our community.

They were honored to participate in this wonderful program and help raise awareness of senior hunger.

Join us at the Greece Town Hall Campus for our first Food Truck Rodeo and Summer Concert of the year on Tuesday, June 11th from 5:30-8:30. Enjoy a delicious meal from one of the many food trucks we have participating and enjoy live music from Eddie Lee & Closing Time Band!

I was honored to visit Greece resident Vella Meadows and celebrate her 99th birthday with her and her family last month. Vella was born in Bukovo, Macedonia and came to America on the SS Conti de Savoia ship through Ellis Island in 1940. She was Naturalized in 1944, married Casimer Meadows in 1950, and then moved to the Town of Greece where she has resided ever since. On behalf of all Greece residents: Happy 99th Birthday, Vella.

Our Town Parks are seeing several new updates this year. The plans for Basil Marella Park will focus on improving the soccer and football fields as well as the disc golf course. New bleachers have been purchased for both the soccer and football field. This Spring season, new soccer goals will be placed on two fields with plans to purchase additional replacements in the coming years. The Town is also excited to accept new soccer goals purchased by the Greater Greece Soccer Club. Greece Parks and Recreation Crew have also made renovations to the Donald Schlieter Lodge. These include a new kitchen, new flooring, new lighting, new ceiling, paint, and updated restrooms. The highlight of the renovation was updating an old office space to a new kitchen with sink, electric oven, refrigerator, microwave and counter space.

Our annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony will take place on Monday, May 27th. As in years past, the parade will proceed down Long Pond from Janes Road to the Greece Town Hall Campus. The parade will start at 12:00 noon and will be followed by a Remembrance Ceremony held at the Greece Town Hall Pavilion. Please join us as we honor all those who so selflessly gave their lives for our freedom.

Our Spring Shredding Event has been scheduled for Thursday, May 16th from 1:00pm – 4:00pm at the Greece Town Hall Campus. I am happy to offer this free event to Greece residents twice per year. The next event will be held in the Fall and will be later in the evening.
