Local resident volunteers for the Peace Corps in Madagascar

As a young girl Danielle Montecalvo of Greece always had an interest in visiting abroad. Danielle graduated from Spencerport High School in 2014. For her Senior High School project she painted a 6 foot by 9 foot World Map, which is still on display at the Spencerport High School in the Language Arts hallway. “I was always interested in other countries and the different cultures around the world. I also knew I always wanted to travel the world,” Danielle said.

Danielle attended American University in Washington D.C. and graduated in May of 2018 with a double major in Physics and International Relations. American University is described as, “A student-centered research institution located in Washington, D.C., with highly-ranked schools and colleges, internationally-renowned faculty, and a reputation for creating meaningful change in the world. Our students distinguish themselves for their service, leadership, and ability to rethink global and domestic challenges and opportunities. At American University passion becomes action; students actively engage in the world around them; and the leaders of today train the leaders of tomorrow.”

The American University President Sylvia Burwell said of the University, “We are a University of strivers and dreamers, of activists and artists, of scholars and servant-leaders. We realize that when we all contribute, we all succeed.”

“During college I had a lot of interest in the Peace Corps, I knew I wanted to work for the Peace Corps after graduation,” Danielle said. The work of the Peace Corps is stated as, “From leading

GreeceNewsNY.com March 2020 5 health campaigns to boosting local entrepreneurship to teaching digital literacy, we offer a range of opportunities for making a difference.” The Peace Corps volunteer opportunities are available in 60 countries around the globe. Service time is two years plus three months of training. Volunteers are U.S. citizens at least 18 years of age, ready to depart in 9-12 months. Danielle graduated from American University in May of 2018 and started her training with the Peace Corps in September of 2018. When volunteering for the Peace Corps Danielle applied to go anywhere that her skills would be best utilized. Madagascar was selected as her service assignment, teaching English at the University level. Danielle has a passion for Science and Technology and is able to use these skills when teaching her students.

Her first achievement was to learn the Malagasy language. The official languages of Madagascar are Malagasy and French, and there are several different dialects of the Malagasy language.

“Although the dialects vary in the Malagasy language, everyone can be understood by each other,” Danielle said.

Danielle teaches at the University in the Northwest city of Mahajanga, it is the fourth largest city in Madagascar. She said, “I love my life here, it is such an adventure. I live in an apartment close to my host family. Each Peace Corps member is assigned a host family that helps them adapt to the life and the culture in their assignment country. My goal here is to soak in as many new things as I can. My life here is not difficult. I did have a lot to adapt to, but living in a big city I enjoy many amenities that continued on page 11

ACM Field Trip Belobaka Caves: In June 2019, my students and I visited a local cave in Mahajanga, Madagascar. We learned about the significance of these caves to the Malagasy people in the Mahajanga region of Madagascar. Afterward, the students practiced their English by summarizing in English what they learned about the caves in Malagasy. It was a great day for exploring a special park in their community.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich I hope everyone is staying safe and warm as we battle through another Western New York winter season!

I would like to remind residents to allow for extra travel time during their commute and to be mindful of weather warnings.

We have had a busy start to 2020, complete with hosting community recognition ceremonies and welcoming news businesses to our great town.

It is always an honor for me to recognize the outstanding young people in our community. During our most recent Greece Town Board Meeting, I was joined by our Council members to present a proclamation and medal to Gavin Watt who recently achieved Eagle Scout Ranking through his efforts towards planning and constructing a 10x12 foot storage shed that will be used to store donations to the Greece Ecumenical Clothing Closet.

Last month, we hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of Jose Joe’s in Greece. We are very excited that owners Thomas Ban, Anna Maria Ban, and Robert Buono chose to expand the restaurant to Greece. We also welcomed another restaurant to Greece this past month. King Crab, recently opened at 102 Greece Ridge Center Drive.

As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other Town-related matters. Greece Rotary Annual Pasta Dinner The Greece Rotary Club has successfully closed the books on their Annual Ziti Dinner. Over 1,300 community members came out on January 26, 2020 to the Diplomat Party House to enjoy a delicious meal. A dinner of pasta, meatballs, salad and desserts was served.

For 43 years the Club has succeeded in raising thousands of dollars through the dinner to fund their ongoing support of community projects and programs. Totally volunteer run, all Rotarians and many of their family members and friends are assisted by the students from the Interact Clubs at Greece Athena and Greece Odyssey High Schools at the event. Ralph Annucci served as Honorary Chair of the event, having started the tradition 43 years ago when as Club President he needed a new fund raiser.

The dinner has been successfully re-invented over the years.

Chuck Gannon, Past Club President, chaired the event this year.

The goal for this year was $40,000 and all indications are it will be reached.

others in the rural areas don’t have. As a member of the Peace Corps we are expected to live like we are a local.”

Madagascar is the world’s second largest island country that is located off the coast of East Africa. It is the fourth largest island in the world with numerous smaller peripheral islands. The island was formed when it split from the Indian sub-continent millions of years ago. This allowed native plants and animals to evolve in relative isolation. As a result over 90% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth. Despite a wealth of abundant and diverse natural resources, Madagascar is one of the world’s poorest countries. The economy is largely based on agriculture, mining and fishing. One of their best know products is vanilla, which comes from an orchid grown on the island. More than two-thirds of the population in Madagascar live below the poverty line, with three-quarters of the people living in rural areas and only 13 % of the population having access to electricity.

Danielle says life as a teacher in Madagascar has been an eye opener, “Being a teacher is a privilege. In the classroom I learn as much from my students as they learn from me. It is a privilege to share my knowledge and to learn from them. We are all intellectually motivated,” she said.

There are very few classroom computers available at the universities. Universities do have WiFi access, but only 5-10% of the students have access to computers. “The internet is the connection to the world and it is an extremely important teaching tool,” Danielle said.

When researching ways to bring more computers to the schools, Danielle discussed with her director a successful past program that she learned about through her research. Through the Peace Corps, Danielle and another Peace Corps volunteer teaching Computer Technology in Madagascar, Ashley Thompson from South Carolina, have started a project to purchase 73

GreeceNewsNY.com March 2020 11 computers from World Computer Exchange (WCE), a non-profit organization that provides refurbished computers at low cost to schools around the world. Their goal is to raise $18,914.98 that will be used to purchase the computers and distribute them to three schools, one high school and two universities, across the island of Madagascar. These computers will help the English and Technology teachers improve their students’ computer literacy.

They will be installed in computer labs and allow members of the school free access to world wide information. The computers will be utilized in technology courses, mentorship programs, computer clubs and for general research.

The schools are preparing for the computers by creating preexisting information courses for students. The teachers draw screens and keyboards on blackboards to give students visual aids of what to expect when using a computer. Schools have instituted plans to set money aside for the upkeep, maintenance and security of the computers. Faculty members knowledgeable in repairing computers are in place for maintenance purposes. The new computers will provide access to information and knowledge and community members will be better able to participate in their world.

This coming November Danielle’s Peace Corps volunteer work will end. She plans to return home to Greece for the holidays. “I really miss my family. After the holidays I plan to return to Washington D.C. I hope to work for the Federal Government. While in college I did an internship with NASA and with my love of science it would be great to work there. Or maybe I will work in International Relations, maybe even in Madagascar since I am familiar with the language and the culture. The future is pretty open,” she said.

Judy Ertel, a longtime Food Shelf Volunteer, became a shopping assistant when the Client Choice program was implemented more than 1-1⁄2 years ago at the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf.

Judy realized a need for cloth shopping bags as most of the shopping assistants who volunteer at the food shelf prefer the reusable bags to plastic or paper bags. Judy likes to sew and she designed a pattern to make the cloth bags. Judy was also able to acquire donated material to make the bags from SewGreen@ Rochester. Founded in 2015, the mission of SewGreen@Rochester is to incorporate community, creativity and sustainability in everything they do. SewGreen@Rochester, Inc. is a 501c3 dedicated to rescuing for reuse everything to do with sewing, knitting, crochet, and needlework. So far Judy has made 75 bags for use at the food shelf. Judy also volunteers her time at the Greece Ecumenical Clothing Closet.

Some of the reasons Food Shelf clients gave when asking for help during the month of December 2019 are: • Housing challenges: rent increased, high utility costs; security deposit to be paid or not yet refunded.

• Income problems: disability or SNAP benefits reduced or late; living only on Social Security benefits; problems getting or renewing benefit certifications.

Deaf performers take the stage in Rochester Hands-In Entertainment will be bringing Josh Castille and Jules Dameron to Rochester for the first time on Friday, March 6, at the Kodak Center Studio Theatre.

Castille, who recently appeared with Deaf West’s Broadway revival of Spring Awakening, will be presenting his one-man cabaret performance, “On Stage With Josh,” a smorgasbord of hit Broadway showtunes translated into American Sign Language.

The show, directed by Dameron, promises to have the audience experiencing music in a whole new way and leaving with a new appreciation of music.

On Saturday, March 7, Castille and Dameron will present their workshop for working American Sign Language Interpreters on translating musical works into ASL in a way that is appealing to the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.

“This is a show that can be enjoyed by not only those who have fluency in ASL, but also by those who have a great appreciation for music and visual art,” says Hands-In Entertainment Executive Director Hunter Ekberg. “After seeing Josh’s viral translation of “Satisfied” from Hamilton, I knew he would be a wonderful fit for our arts community.”

Josh Castille is a deaf performance artist based out of Los Angeles, California. Castille has performed in community theatres, Broadway, and the Tony Awards. He has starred in commercials, short films, music videos, and TV shows.

Jules Dameron is an award-winning film director and actor who happens to be deaf. Jules created “Reverse Polarity” and has directed many music videos in ASL using Deaf talent.

On Stage With Josh (public performance) will be on Friday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m. at The Kodak Center, 200 West Ridge Road, Rochester. Interpreters provided. Tickets are $25 general admission, $45 VIP (includes prime seating, autographed headshot, and meet and greet after the show).

The Little Mermaid at Greece Athena Middle School Greece Athena Middle School is continuing the time-honored tradition of bringing an outstanding musical theater production to the community. This year there will be six performances of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, which will feature a cast and crew of over 200 middle school students. Greece Athena Middle School Theatre is an exciting, large-scale production group featuring a unique blend of singing, spectacular sets, and dynamic choreography to transport audiences “Under the Sea”.

Greece Athena Middle School Theatre is self supported and since 1996 this theatre group has raised a significant amount of money to donate to local children’s charities, including Camp

Open Arms of Cancer Action Inc., Muscular Dystrophy Association, Autism Up, Artists Unlimited, Gilda’s Club of Rochester, and many others. Net proceeds from this show will be donated, teaching children to use their talents to help others in the community.

In this year’s production professional aerial choreography will be utilized to simulate ‘swimming’.

Eagle Scout Recognition Award The Town of Greece hosted an official Eagle Scout Award Presentation Ceremony during the Town Board Meeting on Tuesday, January 21, 2020. The Town of Greece Eagle Scout Recognition Medal is presented to all Boy Scouts who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in their local troop.

At the meeting a proclamation and medal were presented to Gavin Watt who has recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop Number 31. In order to complete his Eagle Scout project, Gavin planned and constructed a 10x12 foot storage shed that is used to store donations to the Greece Ecumenical Clothing Closet. Several hours were spent designing the structure, raising donations, and constructing the shed. After the completion of the shed, Gavin installed gutters, erosion rocks, and wire mesh around the bottom and cleared out vines that grew near the

fence. Gavin organized family, friends, schoolmates, and sports teammates to assist in completing the project. In addition to constructing the shed, Gavin also repaired the existing donation drop off shed by re-roofing, painting, and installing new gutters and trim work. The project will be very useful to the Greece Ecumenical Clothing Closet.

The Boy Scouts of America, one of the United States largest youth organizations, is dedicated to promoting self-reliance, courage, and patriotism among young men. The Eagle Scout Award is attained after countless hours of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication to the scouting creed. We discussed what we learned about the park in English and participated in team building and leadership activities in English.

Staying Motivated

Are you struggling with staying on track and motivated with your weight loss goals? Sometimes we start strong losing weight with a diet and exercise plan, but we don’t finish. Whether it be outside pressure or life gets busy challenges are created to staying on track. But you’re not destined for failure. Even if you’ve started and stopped countless times before, you can still make weight loss happen. By putting some important skills to use, you will find it a little easier to stay motivated, stick to your weight loss efforts and reach your goal weight.

Set small, measurable goals that will help you get to your overall large goal. For instance, “I will eat five servings of fruit and vegetables a day, incorporate leafy green veggies into three meals a day, drink at least 68 ounces of water daily,” etc. Write these goals out.

Keep a food and exercise journal. This is extremely helpful to track how much you’re eating. Sometimes you don’t realize how many small bites here and there add up. You can do a hand-written journal or go digital and log your food/fitness from the computer or your smartphone. MyFitnessPal is a great resource for this.

Skip the pantry and head to the fridge. No one really keeps a lot of processed foods in their fridge because they’re usually self-stable. When looking for an afternoon snack stick with something from the fridge, greek yogurt, fruit, veggies with hummus, edamame, etc.

Try new foods. Eating steamed broccoli and baked tofu every night can get old. Look for new healthy recipes online, in cookbooks or magazines so you don’t get bored with eating healthy.

Eat something every 2-3 hours. This keeps your metabolism running and also makes sure you don’t get ravenous and end up eating whatever is in sight when you get home from work.

Keep nutritious foods on hand and ready to eat. Preparation is the key to eating healthy! Having fresh vegetables and

GreeceNewsNY.com March 2020 23 fruits, lean protein, healthy fats and smart carbs each week is super helpful for staying on track. Make big batches of protein/ roasted veggies and brown rice at the beginning of the week so you have healthy foods in the fridge ready to go for quick lunches.

Keep tempting foods that trigger you to overeat out of the house. Cookies, chips, candy, etc. If the tempting foods are already in your house because someone else bought them, I’ve found that putting them away in a high cabinet is helpful. Out of sight, out of mind.

Always bring a healthy snack with you when you leave the house for more than a couple hours. Apples, nuts, protein bars and carrots are super portable.

Eat and enjoy your favorite foods in moderation. Deprivation tends to backfire so if you really want a treat, try it in moderation.

When going out to eat, look at the menu for the restaurant online first. Deciding beforehand what healthy option you’re going to get can be helpful so you’re not tempted by unhealthy options once you’re there.

Don’t let one set-back keep you from working toward your goal. Don’t get down on yourself if you slip-up -just make sure your next meal is a healthy one!

Greece Paint Players Dinner Theater “37 POSTCARDS” When tragedy happens wouldn’t it be wonderful to hide away pretending? Impossible? Maybe just impossibly funny.

Playwright Michael McKeever certainly makes it work in ”37 Postcards,” one of his most popular comedies.

The actors create a space to believe, for just a few hours, that it is possible to make the world go away. All that is left is the laughter and love of a family that is eccentric beyond comprehension. And that’s what Avery Sutton finds when he returns to his lovely but slightly skewed home in an upscale neighborhood of Darien, Connecticut. Ice Rescue on Sodus Bay

I had finished this month’s article on ice fishing and planned to submit it on Tuesday. That is, before I went ice fishing at Sodus Bay on Sunday, February 9, and watched in disbelief as a father and his twelve-year-old son went through the ice right before my eyes.

When I arrived at Sodus Bay on Sunday morning at 9 a.m., there were at least 200 people already on the ice, fishing. There were so many vehicles on Shaker Tract Road that I had trouble finding a place to park. As I made my way onto the ice, I made a point of walking out on someone else’s tracks in the fresh snow at all times as I knew the ice hadn’t been safe for very long. I wasn’t especially worried because there were at least fifty ice shelters out where I was headed (see photo). After walking north for about a half-mile, I arrived in the village of ice shelters. I wove my way through them, looking to get on the outside of the main group of fishermen. I had heard recently that too much activity on the ice could spook the fish.

As I got on the edge of town, I was surprised to see that there was nobody fishing any further northeast as that area had been one of the better spots on the bay last winter. The ice appeared fine with two fresh inches of snow on top, but there wasn’t much evidence of anyone fishing any further. So, I stopped to drill a hole and saw that there were a good six inches of ice. Experts say ice that is three to four inches is safe to walk on, so I was okay.

The fishing was slow, and the perch I was catching were small (one stripers). About an hour in, I heard the sound of an engine and looked up from my hole to see a man and his son on a snow dog about 150 yards away traveling along at a fair rate of speed. A snow dog is a machine specifically made for ice fishing that pulls you along, similar to those stand-behind riding lawnmowers. As I watched them drive across this barren area where there were no fishermen for hundreds of yards in any direction, I thought, “Wow, the ice must be stronger there than I thought.” A minute later, I stared in disbelief as their machine bogged down and as if in slow motion, dropped through the ice. I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing.

I was the nearest person to them at about 150 yards and started their way at a fast pace, pulling my empty ice sled behind me. I noticed four other fishermen coming from my left as well. I yelled, “Call 911!” and continued to hurry along. As I merged with these guys, they had stopped in front of me. I started to move past them, but one man shouted, “Stop!” just as I felt the ice below me get spongy and make a cracking sound. I froze and then quickly stepped back. It was there that you could see a crust line of ice six inches high that was an obvious border between safe ice and weak ice. One of the fishermen had a heavy ice spud bar that I borrowed and chopped down on the ice. The spud went right through like a hot knife through butter, revealing the ice on the other side of the crusted ridge to be barely one inch thick. So, it was there we all had to stay.

The boy was lying upon the ice, his father in the water clutching the edge of the hole. The kid was only fifty yards away from me and I had to fight my urge to rush out and help him. We shouted encouragement to the boy to start crawling, and to his credit, he did, little by little.

By now, there were a dozen people there, and none of us had a decent rope to throw to the boy, let alone to his father another 30 yards behind him. The boy kept crawling as we coaxed him, and, after ten minutes, he made it to the twenty feet of rope we had thrown, so we pulled him

to safety. He was wet, but all right. I asked him if he was cold and he said no.

His father kept trying to climb up on the ice but kept falling back as the ice broke, or he lost his grip at each attempt. We continued to yell out words of encouragement, which was all we could do … talk about a helpless feeling. His girlfriend arrived from somewhere behind us as she had been fishing in one of the huts in the village. She immediately wanted to go out to him, but we stopped her as I showed her with the spud how thin the ice was. We now learned his name and all shouted to Jason to keep trying to get up on the ice. He had been in the water a good 20 minutes with no rescue in sight, and we could see he was exhausted. A lone DEC officer showed up and, to his credit, attempted to get out to Jason using my small ice fishing sled as an iceboat. The problem was that there was no way to propel the sled forward on the thin ice. He had two ice picks and started just inching along. We had tied a rope around him in case he went through so we could pull him back.

The officer made it about ten yards out on the bad ice when an airboat that I never even knew existed motored out from behind Newark Island and sped our way, flying over the expansive area of bad ice. When they got about 80 yards from Jason they stopped and three responders in survival suits got out and started running across the weak ice to Jason who was barely hanging on for his life at this point. One of the rescuers went through the ice while the other two kept going. They made it to the man and wrapped the rope around him but didn’t have a long enough rope to make it back to the airboat. We yelled out to throw the rope to us. He did, and with the power of eight fishermen pounding with adrenaline, successfully pulled Jason that sixty yards to our safe ice so fast he could have water skied.

Once on solid ice he was in shock but surprisingly not panicked. He appeared to be a middle-aged, fit, hardy-looking dude which surely helped save his life. He kept saying calmly, “I can’t feel my legs.” About that time, an EMT arrived from shore a good mile’s hike away. They put Jason in my sled and pulled him over to the airboat, which had repositioned onto safe ice. The EMT responder joined Jason in the boat, and off they went to the hospital where I understand he is doing okay.

The Rochester TV news had the story all wrong as they reported two men fell through the ice while ice fishing 30 feet from shore. The truth was that they were a good mile from the mainland.

I must say that there were times in those 30 minutes before the airboat arrived that I thought the guy was not going to make it. We were a mile from shore. How were they going to rescue him way out here before hypothermia set in, and he would just let go out of exhaustion?

It was a terrible feeling being so close to Jason and his son and not be able to help them. I promise you that I will not be out on the ice again without a good quality rescue rope and a pair of ice picks to wear around my neck for digging in and pulling yourself up out of the water and onto the ice. This situation was nothing to sneeze at, and if it wasn’t for that beautiful airboat from the Alton Fire Department and its fearless rescue crew, I believe Jason would not have made it.

I remarked to one of the first responders as he returned my sled to me, “Whatever they are paying you guys, it’s not enough.” His response, “We don’t get paid, we are volunteers.”

True heroes right in our very midst! God bless all first responders!
