Eagle Scout Recognition Award The Town of Greece held an official Eagle Scout Award Medal Presentation Ceremony on January 15, 2019 at the Town Board Meeting. The Town of Greece Eagle Scout Recognition Medal is presented to all Boy Scouts who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in their local troop.

A proclamation and medal were presented to Timothy Morris who recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop Number 48. In order to complete his Eagle Scout project, Tim gathered a team of volunteers to design and build a GaGa Pit on the grounds of Northstar Christian Academy. GaGa Ball is a physical activity that incorporates agility, dodging, jumping, and striking.

“It is an honor for me to present proclamations and medals to the hard working and determined young men who have shown that commitment and perseverance lead to success. Thank you for your efforts towards a project that will be enjoyed by all students at Northstar Christian Academy,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said.

The Boy Scouts of America, one of the United States largest youth organizations, is dedicated to promoting self-reliance, courage, and patriotism among young men. Councilwoman Presents to Local Girl Scout Troop

On Thursday evening, January 24, 2019, Councilwoman Diana Christodaro spoke with a group of girl scouts on the topic of local government. The Junior Girl Scout Troop and their leaders wanted to meet with Diana to talk about local government as part of the process to earn their Inside Government Badge.

Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce Call for Nominations 2019 Youth Hall of Fame Greece Regional Chamber is Seeking Nominations for Outstanding Youths The Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce announced that nominations are now being accepted for the 29th Annual Youth Hall of Fame Awards. This program provides businesses, volunteer groups, schools and individuals with the opportunity to recognize young people in the community who have demonstrated exceptional personal growth and development through their outstanding achievements and contributions.

Being nominated to receive this award carries great meaning to the nominees and their families. The community should nominate youth who may have exhibited one or more of these desirable qualities: • An exceptional volunteer -or• An outstanding employee -or• One who has given service to the community or other peers -or• One who has coped with a life challenge - physical, social, or mental -or• One who has overcome a personal tragedy The Youth Hall of Fame recipients are selected by a Chamber committee of community and business representatives and will be honored at a special induction ceremony on May 9, 2019, at the Mall at Greece Ridge. All nominees must be enrolled as a high school student in 11th or 12th grade in any regional public, private, parochial or charter school.

The awards committee will be screening all documents during the first week of March. The Greece Robotics Program grows under a Team Approach

Chris Mros, Adam Geier and Maressa Ranaletti are technology teachers in the Greece Central School District. They all graduated from SUNY Oswego with Bachelor of Science in Technology education degrees, and are involved with the Robotics program in the Greece Central School District.

The Greece Robotics program started in 2005 under the leadership of Chris Mros, Greece Athena technology teacher and Adam Geier, technology teacher for the Greece School District. The program, at that time, consisted of three Greece High Schools: Athena, Arcadia and Olympia.

Maressa Ranaletti was a senior at Greece Arcadia and was encouraged by her technology teacher, Mr. Mros to become a member of the first robotics team. She preferred building and taking things apart rather than the academic part of school, and found her niche in the technology and Maressa Ranaletti discussing this year’s Robotics Competition robotics programs. that will be held at RIT Thursday, March 14 – Saturday, March 16, After she graduated from Arcadia in 2006, Ranaletti 2019. Photo by Karen Fien wasn’t involved with any robotics programs during her college years, but did attend a few competitions over those years. After graduating from college, she held a long term substitute teaching position in the Spencerport School District and worked with Joe Gallina in the Technology Department. Gallina is one of the head coaches for the Spencerport Robotics Team, he encouraged her to get involved in the robotics program. Ranaletti was very impressed with the Spencerport program, how well it was run, and how much suppport they received from the district, teachers, students, parents and people outside the school. Ranaletti realized the commitment involved with the program at Spencerport but wasn’t ready to jump in yet.

After she was hired by the Greece School District as a technology teacher she was asked by her past coach and teacher, Chris Mros, to join the Greece Robotics Team as an assistant coach and take over as a head coach the following year with Adam Geier, so that Mros could spend more time with his growing family.

She was back at her home school feeling a commitment to her district and her students, and wanting to give her students another outlet to be a part of, building on engineering and the trades as job opportunities available to all students. She was able to bring the Greece Odyssey students into the program in 20172018 and now it encompasses the entire Greece School District.

Local Car Club gives back to the community It all started back in 1974 when several car enthusiasts decided to start a car club and have an Annual June Car Show to help promote their hobby. This car club is still going today and is known as the Street Machines of Rochester.

The Club has approximately 125 members, and this year will be hosting their 45th Annual June Car Show at Badgerow Park in Greece. The event typically draws about 500 competitors and a couple thousand spectators.

This is a non-profit club. Each year a portion of the proceeds from the June Car Show are donated to local charities.

Donations are given to a different charity each year such as, Greece Auxiliary Police, Breast Cancer, Autism, and this year’s donation will go to Veterans Outreach. The club also collects clothing all year and donates them to the Ecumenical Clothing Closet.

Street Machines of Rochester Car Club also participates in local town parades in Greece, Barnard, Hilton, Spencerport, and Henrietta.

About two dozen members of the Street Machines of Rochester will be volunteering on the 2nd Wednesday of December, afternoon and evening, to ring the bells for the

Salvation Army Red Kettle at the two entrances to Macys at the Mall at Greece Ridge. Later that same week, several Club members along with Santa, will visit one of the Nursing homes in Greece, and hand out gift baskets to residents who have no family to bring them anything for Christmas.

Street Machines of Rochester is a Club that gives back to the community, but would not be successful without the support of the community, and that community support is greatly appreciated.

VPAC is a 501c3, nonprofit organization formed to help Veterans, Active Military, and their families. The Great Sled Race gets underway.

The Boy Scouts of America Lighthouse District 2019 Klondike Derby was hosted by Troop 240 of Greece and held at the Parma VFW on January 25 and 26. There were 84 youths and 33 adults from 11 troops and two Webelos 2 dens who participated in the Saturday events. Six troops braved the elements and camped overnight. The event offered camping, competitions which included Fire Building, First Aid (Hurry Cases), First Aid (Carries), Map and Compass, Height and Distance, Ice Rescue, Team Snowshoeing, Sled Inspection, Knots, Lashings, the Great Sled Race and fun for area troops.

A Unique Approach to Theatre

The Century Club of Rochester will be the venue for the March 1-3, 2019 production of The Sound of Music.

The classic story with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and based on the book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse tells the real life story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, one of the world’s best known concert groups in the era immediately preceding World War II. The play will be produced and directed by Judith Ranaletta with co-production by OFC Creations.

The play’s artistic and vocal director Judith Ranaletta has a nearly four decade history of accomplishments in the Performing Arts. Her unique approach to staging and directing The Sound of Music in Rochester is based on an experience she had with her husband, Judge John C. the business aspects of the production for me and that this play fits into his mission for the arts in Rochester.” There were 80 tickets available for each of six performances, including the preview dress rehearsal on February 28th, all performances are sold out.

Judith Ranaletta is a seasoned performer, director and teacher. She has performed in and directed over 250 productions locally, and throughout the United States and Europe. She holds a Masters Degree in Vocal Performance from Ithaca College with a minor in Acting, and continues to do extensive Post-Graduate work at the Eastman School of Music.

Ranaletta is the former Vocal Music and Drama Director at Greece Athena High School. She retired from Athena in 2011. Over her 29 years teaching at Athena she grew the program from 17 students when she started to 42 students by the end of her first year and within five years she was teaching over 300 students a day in the Music and Drama programs. “I started a Show Choir where we performed pop music. I did this as a way of attracting all types of stu-

dents to the program by including popular music that they could relate to,” Ranaletta said.

During her teaching years at Athena Ranaletta took her students to show competitions where they took first place 29 years straight. Her students have appeared in 39 Broadway shows and continue to enjoy successful careers in the Performing Arts. She said, “My goal is to prepare my students for careers in the performing arts, and to remain honest and realistic with them about the competition within the field and the challenges of an artistic career.”

She says working in the field before taking her teaching job helped her to be a better teacher because she, “Walked the walk as a performer.”

Ranaletta has received numerous awards during her career including twice being honored with the Presidential Arts Scholar Outstanding Teacher Award and in 2015 being nominated by over 700 of her former and current students for the first ever Educator in Theatre Tony Award. She is also the Founder and Director of the ROC City Singers and currently has her own Production Company and maintains a private voice and acting studio.

Local Abduction Survivor Making a Difference in the Lives of Children

Eleven years ago Scott Berne, a parental abduction survivor, shared with the world the extraordinary journey of his childhood experiences in the release of his book “Extraordinary Circumstances.” The book has been sold worldwide and describes his survival journey after he and his brother were abducted by their mentally ill mother after she lost custody of them.

In 1978 Scott, at the age of 8, and his younger brother were abducted by their mother on her first visitation after she lost custody of them. Although it was a local case it received national notoriety as it unfolded because at that time it was rare for a mother to lose custody, and there were no laws to protect the legal custodial parents and to protect the children from parent abduction.

During the time their mother abducted them over the course of the two years, Scott and his brother were taken to five countries and had 13 different residences. The boys were miraculously recovered thanks to their father Dale Berne’s relentless efforts in searching for them and his use of national media.

The August 1981 edition of Ladies Home Journal magazine printed an ad showing a picture of the missing boys.

The babysitter for the boys at that time in Houston, Texas, saw the ad and went to the police. After a dramatic cap-

ture the case became a national legal battle because there was no proper legal protocol for caring for recovered kidnapped children, especially when the kidnapper was one of the parents.

Prompted by this case, the Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act was signed

by President Jimmy Carter. This act helped the process of getting Scott and his brother back to their home in Rochester and to their dad. Even after their mother was found guilty of abducting the boys, she was never required to serve any time in prison due to inadequate laws. The chaos, threats and attempts to re-kidnap the boys continued throughout much of their adolescence. In 2004 their mother committed suicide.

Today Scott is not only a survivor but an author and children’s rights advocate who uses his experiences to help other children. He has shared his experiences with many audiences on national television, including the Oprah Winfrey Show. Scott is an active board member and spokesperson for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. He not only speaks about his own personal experiences, but he also diligently works at education, prevention and legislation to help protect children. He has lobbied from Albany to Capitol Hill to help change the criminal laws of parental abduction from a misdemeanor to a felony. continued on page 24

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is a private nonprofit corporation whose mission is to help find missing children, reduce child sexual exploitation and prevent child victimization. NCMEC works with families, victims, schools, law enforcement and the public to assist with child abduction cases, recover missing children, and providing services to deter and combat child sexual exploitations.

There are four regional offices in the country and we are fortunate here in Rochester to be the home of one of them.
