Town Hall Campus - 1 Vince Tofany Blvd.

Greece has its own Community and Senior Center located in the geographic center of the Town of Greece on Town Hall Campus. This two story structure is approximately 35,000 sq. ft. The Community Center features a 7,800 sq. ft. gymnasium, senior citizen’s lounge, 4,530 sq. ft. multi-purpose room, art room, dance/ activity room, programmed fitness area and walking track. Recreational activities abound on the Town Hall Campus. In addition to the Library and Community Center, there are many outdoor activities to participate in. On the Town Campus are playgrounds, an entertainment pavilion, pickleball courts, a walking track, ice rink, outdoor fitness equipment, bocce courts, horseshoe pits and the Splash Pad.

With more than eight miles of shoreline along Lake Ontario, an active and vital Community and Senior Center, a state-of-theart Public Library, and so much more, the Town of Greece has ample opportunity for summertime fun.

Lake Ontario and Ponds With the Lake Ontario shoreline, Braddock Bay, and ponds that include Cranberry Pond, Long Pond, Buck Pond and numerous other smaller ponds, water activities including boating, swimming, fishing and bird watching are central to summertime fun in Greece.

There are numerous car top and motorized boat launches, and docking facilities, along the lakeshore providing boating opportunities for water enthusiasts.

Birding - The Lake Ontario shoreline, which includes a cluster of 34 minor spots, is one of Rochester’s most productive areas for birding. The sites can be found along the Town of Greece’s Lake Ontario shoreline and on adjacent inland waters, wetlands, woodlots and open fields. Summer Recreation Programs encourage kids to Explore, Create and Grow. Programs include Dance, Theatre, the Caterpillar Clubhouse, Wheels in Motion, Star Wars Cooking, and Little Saddlers, and so much more.

Sports programs provide fun for all abilities. Included are sports camps that encourage exercise through play. Camps include Soccer, Kickball, Football, Capture the Flag, Dodge Ball, Pirate Ball and more.

The recreation department offers many summer crafts including painting, bingo, tie dye, art camp and lawn games including giant dominoes, cornhole, Jenga, checkers, frisbee and ring and football toss games.

The Community Center offers a variety of programs for Adults 55+ including bingo, sewing, line dancing, grab and go meals and movie nights for seniors.

The 5K Freedom Run will kick off the day’s festivities and lead into a day filled with family friendly activities including the Super Hero Sprint for kids, food trucks, musical performances, and a fireworks spectacle!

First Phase of Inclusive Playground installation has begun The We-Go Round Swing, which is an inclusive playground piece designed for wheelchair users, is being installed. The swing will be located at Basil Marella Park, 975 English Road, in the Town of Greece. The We-Go Round is a piece of a larger playground dedicated to inclusive play. The Town is working with Endless Highways to make the dream of inclusive play for all a reality.

“The We-Go-Round is a covered merry-go round type piece and will be our area’s first inclusive swing designed for those in wheelchairs and will be supported by the Town of Greece. The We-Go-Swing allows children and adults in wheelchairs to swing together with friends and family. I believe inclusion and inclusive play should be at the forefront of our community. The ability for children of all ages and backgrounds to play together in a safe environment with their friends and family is important now, more than ever,” said Greece Supervisor Bill Reilich.

Chamber Small Business Information Series The Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Rochester Branch of the U.S. Small Business Administration offered a virtual presentation featuring Lydia Birr, Monroe County Senior Economic Development Specialist, on May 27, 2021. The presentation was led by Virginia G. Smith, Rochester Branch Manager of the U.S. Small Business Administration and facilitated by Greece Chamber PresiVirginia G. Smith dent/CEO Sarah E. Lentini.

Lead presenter Virginia Smith, Branch Manager of the U. S. Small Business Administration, reviewed the Economic Injury Disaster Loan, the Restaurant Relief Fund and the SBA’s Learning Center. Greece Parks The Town maintains 17 park areas containing 764 acres of land. Of this, only 189 acres are currently developed, with the remaining lands to be used for passive recreation. Located within these 189 acres are 13 baseball diamonds, 10 soccer fields, 3 combination football/soccer fields, 8 basketball courts, 20 tennis courts, 2 volleyball courts 16 playgrounds, a skate park, 2 disc golf courses (1-18-hole and 1-9-hole), and several nature trails.

Adeline Park - 6.5 acre neighborhood park in northeastern Greece. Park has lighted basketball courts, lodge for rental, picnic and playground areas, restrooms, tennis courts and soccer fields.

Braddock Bay Park - 199 East Manitou Road is a 375 acre town operated park that is part of the 3,000 acre Braddock Bay Fish and Wildlife Management Area. Homeowners should scout now for invasive Gypsy Moth Caterpillars We are experiencing another season of damage and defoliation from the invasive European Gypsy Moth, Lymantria dispar.

The Diagnostic Helpline at the Cornell Cooperative Extension received an extraordinary number of calls in 2020 regarding Gypsy Moth Caterpillars. It appears WNY is in the midst of a pretty substantial multi-year outbreak, and 2021 will likely see high numbers of Gypsy Moth Caterpillars again. Typically, outbreaks will show high amounts of Gypsy Moths for two to four years, then the population will collapse due to natural causes such as predators, parasites, or disease. That is little comfort, however, for homeowners watching the caterpillars severely defoliate valued landscape plants or large portions of woodlots right now.

As of the last week of May, Gypsy Moth caterpillars had emerged from their egg masses and begun feeding. When they are small, they appear mostly black and hairy, and they disperse by “ballooning” – the caterpillars will send out a silk and float on the wind to other trees and shrubs to begin feeding. As the caterpillars feed, they molt several times – shedding their skin as they grow larger and changing appearance from early stages to more mature larval instars. The mature larvae will be dark in color, covered in hairs, and have pairs of orange and blue dots along the length of their body. Gypsy Moth caterpillars can grow to be over two inches long, and as they reach maturity, they can consume massive amounts of leaf tissue in a single day.

The preferred tree species for this invasive pest are oaks, willows, poplars, birch and apple trees, but they will feed on many other deciduous tree species as well as some conifers. Most healthy mature deciduous trees can withstand one season of defoliation – once the Gypsy Moth larvae finish feeding and pupate, the trees can usually send out a second flush of leaves mid-summer. Keeping soil moisture levels even by deeply watering (to a depth of 12 to 18 inches) extending out to the dripline is the best thing homeowners can do to reduce stress on trees affected by Gypsy Moth Caterpillars.

For homeowners wanting to reduce the amount of defoliation and damage done by the caterpillars this year, timing is critical.

Manual removal is an option, picking or scraping the caterpillars off of host plants into a bucket of soapy water and then discarding after they die. Use caution when touching the caterpillars as their hairs can cause an adverse skin reaction in some people. Manually removing caterpillars may not be practical, however, if there are massive amounts or caterpillars or if they are out of reach on taller landscape trees.

There are pesticide sprays available on the market registered for use against Gypsy Moth Caterpillars, but they are most effective when caterpillars are smaller than one inch long. It can also be difficult for homeowners to treat using pesticides if the caterpillars are high up in mature trees. As the Gypsy Moth life cycle progresses, homeowners are more and more limited in management options. How To Turn Exercise Into A Habit In 5 steps!

Almost everyone knows that regular physical activity, mindful healthy eating and stress reduction are the keys to healthy living.

But when it comes to the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, it is difficult to make necessary changes.

The one big factor that helps convert a behavior into a lifestyle is consistency.

Consistency is the key to long term success.

When it comes to making exercise a regular part of your lifestyle, focusing on the positive aspects of change can help make it a more pleasurable experience. This is an important consideration as the brain rewards what it sees as pleasurable by increasing good mood hormones like dopamine and serotonin. Learning to enjoy the process of physical activity (aka exercise) can help increase these levels making exercise a more rewarding and lasting experience.

Use the five following tips to help shift your focus to making exercise an enjoyable and consistent part of your lifestyle.

1. Schedule Your Workouts: Book your workouts into your schedule like you do a professional or health care appointment.

If you take the time to plan your schedule and include times for exercise it is more likely to become a habit. Then if something or someone tries to creep into the space you designated for exercise you can say, “Sorry but I have a commitment at that time.”

2. Practice journaling: Use a journal either digital or on paper to track your progress and record how you feel after you exercise.

Use the notes on your phone, a voice recording, an app or a little note pad. Simply state a few statements on how you feel. Did you feel like you accomplished something? Did you feel energized?

Writing down the positive aspects of how you feel helps shift your mindset to perceiving exercise as something positive. This, in the long term, will help you make it a lifestyle and not a whim.

3. Find a workout buddy: A workout buddy can add a layer of accountability to help you stay on track and have fun in the process. Enlisting a friend, spouse or family member to workout with you can help the time pass faster, make the time more enjoyable and makes you less likely to blow off a workout. If you cannot find a person who is likely to be as committed as you (or even more committed) consider hiring a personal trainer for a few sessions a month to help get you on track. Some gyms even offer small workout groups led by a trainer at a less expensive rate than one on one sessions.

4. Treat Yourself: Give yourself small rewards after you complete a full week of scheduled workouts.

This does not mean a cheeseburger and fries but something small that you like. Set bigger goals like a 1month goal and after you reach that goal treat yourself to a new piece of exercise clothing. By treating yourself for the workouts you are activating the pleasure centers in your brain, creating positive pathways linked to the behavior you want to become a lifestyle.

5. 66 Days to the Sweet Spot: There is a big difference between discipline and habit. Habits require less energy than discipline.

But you need to put up with the discipline to turn it into a habit.

Research on behaviors show that it takes an average of 66 days to acquire a new habit and turn it to the point of “automaticity.”

Do not give up too soon. Give it the proper chance to turn from a disciplined effort to a natural part of your life. Do not be a disciplined person. Be a person of powerful habits.

Boating safety tips

With boating season upon us, many are looking to hit area waterways. AAA Western and Central New York urges safety on the water. Like driving a car, operating a boat is a big responsibility and should be done with the utmost caution.

AAA also recommends boater’s insurance to keep boaters protected. A common misconception that boat owners have is that their boat, trailer, and onboard items are automatically covered, either by an existing homeowner’s insurance policy or auto insurance policy. But the truth is that most homeowner or auto policies don’t cover physical damage, liability, or theft when your boat is on the water. Make sure you have a clear understanding of where you’re covered and where you may need additional protection.

Below are some safety tips to ensure a good day on the water: •Take boating safety instruction and get a nationally approved boating safety education certificate. Seven out of 10 boating incidents are caused by operator error.

•Wear a life jacket – always. And make sure every passenger does so as well.

•Don’t drink – for the same reasons you don’t drink and drive on land.

•Check the weather before you go and keep an eye on it while you’re on the water. Weather can go from delightful to dangerous quickly. So stay safe and get off the water quickly if you see bad weather approaching.

COOKING WITH KIDS Veggie Quiche Patties

Packed with protein and nutritious leafy greens, these veggie quiches are great for a quick dinner or as a grab-n-go breakfast.

Ingredients 1/2 small onion, cut into 1/4-inch dice (about 1/2 cup) 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, divided 1 clove garlic, minced 1 bunch Swiss chard, stems and center ribs removed, leaves cut into thin strips, washed and dried in a salad spinner Kosher salt and black pepper 5 large eggs, beaten 3/4 cup reduced-fat shredded Cheddar cheese 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs (such as parsley and tarragon) 12 baking cups Directions Adults: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Together: Lightly oil or coat 12 muffin cups with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

Adults: Heat 1/2 tablespoon of the oil in a large nonstick skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Together: Add the onion and cook, stirring frequently, until softened, about 5 minutes.

Together: Stir in the garlic and cook 30 seconds to 1 minute, until golden and fragrant.

Together: Add the remaining 1/2 tablespoon oil and the Swiss chard and cook, stirring often, until wilted, about 7 minutes.

Keep a watchful eye and adjust heat accordingly. Season with kosher salt and black pepper to taste.

•Have an emergency kit on the boat (stored safely, so it does not become a hazard) equipped with a flashlight, duct tape, a bucket, a first aid kit, a whistle, ropes, a mirror, a fire extinguisher, and extra life jackets.

•Adhere to the boat’s capacity restriction and keep the weight on the boat balanced.

•Learn the rules of the water and use common sense when operating a boat. Pay attention to the moves of other boaters on the water to avoid collisions or dangerous wake.

•Don’t forget sunscreen and water and know the signs of heat illness.

Adults: Bake until golden brown and the eggs are set, about 15 minutes. Cool slightly, remove from muffin cups, and serve at breakfast, lunch, dinner, or for a snack.

Directions Adults: Cut pineapple and watermelon into 1-inch pieces.

Kids: Wash the berries and grapes and dry them well.

Together: Skewer all the fruit in a colorful pattern and wrap in plastic and refrigerate until ready to eat.
