The Greece Town Board Announced GROW Greece Program Phase 1 COVID-19 Economic Assistance Grant For years, the GRIP (Greece Residential Improvement Program) has assisted homeowners in Greece with providing grant funding from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. To date, the town has successfully assisted 2,200 homes in providing $6,000,000 in funding support since its inception.

“Today, we turn our efforts toward our small businesses. As a former small business owner myself, I have been imagining how devastating this COVID-19 shutdown would have affected my business and my former employees. As your Greece Town Supervisor, I have seen first-hand the devastation many of our small businesses are experiencing. We have certainly been doing all we can to assist wherever possible” said Supervisor Bill Reilich.

Small business are the backbone to every community. During these difficult and challenging times, they have countless worries that extend beyond the fear of losing their business altogether. They bare a heavy responsibility to their employees and their families and also to the community.

On June 2, 2020, Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich and the Greece Town Board announced the introduction of the GROW Greece Program.

GROW is an acronym for: G - Grant Support for Businesses R - Retain Jobs in Greece O - Opportunities Provided W - Working Together to Move Small Business Forward The Greece Town Board made the decision to launch a program which will initially be funded with a supplement to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funds. This fund will initially have $100,000 immediately available. There is already a plan in motion to increase potential funding for Phase I and further enhancements to the program for Phase 2, which will offer small business loans.

The first stage of GROW Greece will consist of up to $5,000 as a business grant to qualifying businesses. The criteria for applying for the grant are: • Business must be located in the Town of Greece • Must be a retail or service business with between 5 to 50 employees • Be an established business in the Town of Greece for at least one year • Be able to document economic loss as a direct result of the COVID-19 health crisis • Be in compliance with applicable codes • Not have any outstanding taxes After this initial funding of Phase I, the town will evaluate before making a decision to add additional funding toward this grant program. The long term plan that is being put in place will offer revolving small business loans. After analyzing

this program, an announcement will be made with more details for what we will call Phase II. Initially, the main goal is to put forth an effort to assist small businesses that are struggling, but as we rally past the ill effects of this Pandemic, this program will continue to exist with an overall purpose of assisting small business growth and attracting small businesses eager to set up shop and GROW their business in Greece.

“I have formed a group of management individuals who I am charging with reviewing the applications, verifying the information provided by the business and selecting the recipients. These individuals will be certain the funding is being used wisely and also ensuring it has a positive effect on the community. I am excited to launch this new program, in particular at this point in time as we are starting to celebrate in a small way our phased opening and the path to what I would like to coin as “A better normal,” Reilich said.

Entries sought for Erie Canalway Photo Contest Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor is calling for entries for its 15th annual Erie Canalway Photo Contest. Images should convey the unique character of New York’s canals and canal communities. Entries must be postmarked by August 28, 2020. Winning photos will be featured in the 2021 Erie Canalway calendar.

Images will be judged in four contest categories: On the Water, Along the Trail, Canal Communities, and Classic Canal. Judges will select first, second, and third place winning images in each category, as well as 12 honorable mentions.

Submitted images must be taken within the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, which spans 524 miles across the full expanse of upstate New York. It encompasses the Erie, CayugaSeneca, Oswego, and Champlain canals and their historic alignments, as well as more than 230 canal communities.

Canalway Challenge promotes health and history along New York’s canals Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor invites New Yorkers to take part in the Canalway Challenge in 2020, tracing history and tracking miles along New York’s canals and Canalway Trail.

Part fitness challenge, part journey of discovery, the Canalway Challenge is free and registration is open to people of all ages and abilities.

“Staying healthy is a #1 priority for everyone right now. The Canalway Challenge is a great way for people to get outside and invest in mental and physical health, while exploring the canals in their local area,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

Participants register online and choose a mileage goal of 15, 90, 180, or 360 miles; then walk, run, or cycle on the Canalway Trail or paddle safe sections of the NYS Canal System to achieve it. The Canalway Challenge can be done in one big trip or many small ones.

This year’s Challenge runs through the end of October, so people have plenty of time to complete it.

New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “Set alongside our state’s iconic canals, the Canalway Challenge offers participants an opportunity to enjoy the bucolic landscapes of Upstate New York, exercising their minds and bodies, while also practicing safe social distancing.”

Families are encouraged to use the Canalway Challenge to supplement home-based learning about New York State history.

Educational worksheets and learning resources are available from the National Heritage Corridor to complement what children will see while on the trail.

Participants in last year’s Canalway Challenge logged 285,000 miles, the equivalent of circling the Earth 11 times.

Participants should follow all New York State Department of Health guidelines for social distancing, wearing a mask, and proper hygiene while on the Canalway Trail and while visiting state parks, historic sites, and communities along the way. Home gardening during this pandemic is, to say the least, on an upswing. The reasons why are logical, during quarantine people have time on their hands and are looking for educational and fun activities to do as an individual and together as a family out in nature. There is the additional bonus of the peace of mind gardening brings knowing that there is a food source right in the backyard. There is also the element of creativity involved in planting, nurturing and growing living things that brings a much needed outlet for the human spirit to thrive. The fact that the pandemic erupted in the springtime in harmony with gardening time and the fact that even a novice gardener can realize wonderful results adds to the attraction.

They are mostly interested in the sustainable food crops, they want to have something that gives back.” Nicholson also notes that there was an increased interest in seed planting, especially among families with the kids learning about gardening with the planting of seeds and watching them grow. “Parents are finding that when kids grow vegetables themselves they are more apt to try them,” he said.

and operates the farm with her family. Hassett said, “We are seeing tons of new people, everybody is gardening and growing, it is a remarkable year at our garden center.” She said there is a strong interest in raised bed gardening. “We are seeing a 50-60% increase in sales and interest in raised bed gardening.

I think it is because growing in a raised bed is an easy task and is very manageable. It is a great way of dipping your toes into gardening,” she said. Gardeners are also very interested in doing it right. “Our phone rings all day long, every day. People have all kinds of gardening questions. We are also fielding questions over our website and through emails. We are fortunate to have our same reliable and knowledgeable staff. People are really into do-it-yourself, doing their landscaping and yard work that they normally pay a service to do,” Hassett said.

Here are a few suggestions from The Sierra Club for a successful home garden: 1. Proper sunlight - consider how much direct sunlight your vegetable plants will receive. Most vegetable and flower plants need good direct sunlight.

2. Expand your vegetable bed options - this includes in-ground beds, raised beds, large containers in sunny spots in the yard, on the deck or balcony, and even small containers on your windowsills.

3. Grow what gives you the best yield in the space available.

4. Grow potatoes - you can use potatoes from the store as the starters and potatoes can be grown in containers.

5. Grow berries - berries give a high yield and take less time than planting fruit trees, and they provide important nutrients that boost the immune system.

6. Be adventurous with variety in your choices of fruits and vegetables.

7. Don’t forget the flowers - they provide food for pollinators which are so important for a successful garden. Pick a bouquet of flowers to bring in the house, flowers are great for mental health and the fact that you grew them yourself is extremely satisfying.

As stylists and barbers go back to work in the current phase two of the New York Forward COVID-19 reopening strategy, state safety guidelines require face masks, shields, and other personal protective equipment.

5. Diabetes - When you are sleep deprived, your body almost immediately develops conditions that resemble the insulin resistance of diabetes. This state, over time, increases the body’s risk of having Type 2 Diabetes.

Chamber Members Help Community During Pandemic The Greece Regional Chamber’s Business Voice Radio Program and Podcast recently featured Anes Osmic of M&T Bank, Dr. Stamatia V. Destounis of Elizabeth Wende Breast Care, and Drs. Bingren Liu and Alexander J. Solky of Wilmot Cancer Center of URMC. U. S. Congressman Joseph Morelle Discusses Federal Funding with Chamber On May 27th, the Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce presented a virtual meeting with U. S. Congressman Joe Morelle. The program was hosted and facilitated by Greece Chamber President/CEO Sarah Lentini. Congressman Morelle discussed recent and upcoming federal legislation as it relates to business, and asked for feedback from Chamber members regarding existing programs, including the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program (EIDL). A message from Greece Performing Arts Society President Jonathan Allentoff Dear Friends, I hope that you and your family are doing well and staying safe and healthy!

Due to COVID-19, all scheduled GPAS events are cancelled/ postponed through the end of our current season (2019-2020).

The Greece Central School District, along with all schools across New York State, is closed through June and the school district has cancelled all facility reservations, including GPAS rehearsal space, through September 5, 2020.

Our groups have been meeting and rehearsing remotely, so as to continue our social and musical endeavors. I am pleased to announce that we will be presenting a series of virtual concerts on Facebook in the coming months and that our Young Artists Awards will be rescheduled in January 2021. We look forward to rescheduling other cancelled/postponed events when we can.

Our board remains active during this time, meeting remotely and working for the future of GPAS. With the excellent work of our board members and community partners, GPAS has received grants from The Farash Foundation and the Paycheck Protection Program. Support from individuals continues to come in through the Facebook Giving Tuesday Now Fundraiser and the Amazon

Smile donation program. All of these contributions make a difference to the future of GPAS and are greatly appreciated.

Faye Wilbur, the current GPAS treasurer, and JoAnn KehrliMerlau have announced their resignations from the GPAS board of directors. I would like to thank them for their wonderful service to GPAS and wish them the very best going forward.

Chamber’s Reopening the Finger Lakes Meeting Draws Hundreds The Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted a virtual meeting on Reopening the Finger Lakes Region on May 26, 2020, which drew over 300 people - not all of whom were able to successfully join the meeting due to overwhelming demands on the meeting platform.

The presenters were Robert Duffy, special advisor to Governor Andrew Cuomo on reopening the Finger Lakes Region, and Vincent Esposito, Regional Director of the Finger Lakes Empire State Development Office of New York State. Greece Regional Chamber President/CEO Sarah Lentini welcomed everyone and introduced the speakers.

Meeting attendees asked questions on a broad variety of topics of concern to businesses looking to reopen, especially in Phase 2. Many present represented the salon and spa industry, looking for guidance on how to reopen within guidelines, in addition to dental offices, youth sports, dance studios, nonprofits, dog groomers, professional services and other businesses.

A key source of updated information, the section of New York State’s website that outlines COVID-19 information and details the phased reopening, was cited several times by the presenters: https://forward. ny.gov/. In addition, the public was directed to follow up with either Robert Duffy or Vincent Esposito for assistance.

Greece Kiwanis Club Update

The Kiwanis Club of Greece has been involved in several projects to help the community. Their mission is to change the world one child and one community at a time. They continue to have regular club and board meetings. If you are interesting in joining in for a virtual meeting, please contact President Heather Henderson at heather35976@gmail.com.

Recently the club donated $1,000 to the local Boy Scout Troop 5 “Campership Fund.” It costs $410 per Scout to attend camp. Kiwanian Angie Kananen is the Troup liaison.

Arlene Szebeda and Heather Henderson, co-chairs of the First Lady’s Project (assisting homeless, foster, and less fortunate youth), were able to complete their Spring service project the week of April 5th. They gathered goodies to help fill the 150 emergency boxes for families in need within the Greece Central School District. The focus was on Easter basket-type items and also perishable and microwavable foods.

The club recently sent a $200 check to help support Project Linus (local Greece chapter). Project Linus makes and then donates blankets for children in need.

With community at heart, 40th Hilton Apple Fest postponed to 2021 After much thought and taking into consideration the risks associated with large gatherings during this uncertain time, the Hilton Apple Fest is postponing its 40th harvest celebration to 2021 out of an abundance of caution for the safety and wellbeing of the Hilton community.

Originally planned for October 3 and 4, this year’s festival committee assessed many variables and safety precautions in canceling the 2020 festival. “This is a painful decision for all of us, but we know that it is the best and safest decision for the health of our community, our vendors, and our attendees,” says Linda Viney, 2020 Hilton Apple Fest Board Chair. Viney has volunteered with the community event since 1995.

Festival organizers emphasize that Apple Fest always operates with the best interest of the community at heart. The festival, a staple of autumn in Rochester since 1981, provides a venue for more than 100 artists and crafters. It also allows dozens of community or-

ganizations to fundraise and build awareness for their cause.

The festival itself is an entirely volunteer-run operation, with no paid staff, and donates much of the event’s proceeds to community causes, such as the Hilton Community Food Shelf, youth sports leagues, and scholarships for graduating Hilton High School seniors every year.

Organizers are discussing alternative ways to keep this community focus in motion this year and are optimistic that the next 16 months will bring renewed health and safety, allowing them to focus efforts toward a 40th-anniversary celebration of the Hilton Apple Fest in 2021.

“Thank you to everyone who supports the Apple Fest tradition – and the entire community – each year,” Viney says.

“We look forward to a safe and healthful festival in 2021.”

Growing Lavender

by Kristina Gabalski Lavender is an easy care perennial herb which adds beauty and scent to border beds, rock gardens and herb gardens. Its shape and low-growing habit mean it can also be used for edging or to make an informal hedge.

Lavender needs full sun to thrive and will not do well even in partial shade. It requires well-drained soil and prefers soil that is alkaline with a pH of 6.4 to 8.2.

Lavender blooms all summer and flower colors range from violet to pink. The attractive gray-green foliage looks beautiful even late in the year.

Lavender is not native to North America - it comes from the Mediterranean, but it makes a lovely addition to the landscape.

Because of its strong scent, lavender is deer resistant. It is also non-aggressive and non-invasive. All plant parts are strongly aromatic and it is considered a semi-evergreen, as its foliage stays green well into winter. Additionally, it attracts pollinators to the garden.

Cornell University recommends shaping and pruning plants after the first bloom. Avoid pruning after late summer until new growth begins in the spring. You can cut back lavender heavily (about six inches) every few years to keep the plants from getting straggly, and remember, lavender is not a long-lived plant, so you should plan on replacing plants about every ten years.

English lavenders are hardy to USDA Zone 5 (-10 to -20 degrees). English cultivars include ‘Munstead’ and ‘Hidcote.’

Although lavender is drought tolerant when established, University of Vermont Extension says the plant will bloom best if not allowed to dry out. Don’t over-fertilize, lavender performs best in lean soils.

Lavender can be used many ways. Flowers are edible and can be used in cooking, but are most often dried for use in potpourri, sachets and crafts. Leaves are distilled for their oils. Lavender oil is considered therapeutic for healing wounds and burns. The scent of lavender is very calming and is said to aid sleep.

Harvest lavender flowers just as they are beginning to open in the morning. This is when they have the highest oil content and scent. Cut the long flower stems and spread on trays or screens to dry in the sun. The stems can also be placed in a warm, dry location with good air movement or hung in bunches upside down.

Lavender flowers can be used as toppings for desserts and ice cream or mixed with chocolate.

On the savory side, lavender can be used with thyme on roasted chicken or in honey mustard dressings.

Finally, lavender grows well in pots. This allows you to move the plants easily around the landscape to where their scent can be most appreciated. Potting also allows you bring the plants inside during the winter, providing extra protection from frigid temperatures.
