The Bagel Bunch Runners are an informal group of runners from Greece. They meet every Saturday morning at 7:00 AM at the Bruegger’s Bagels Bakery in the Wegman’s Plaza, the corner of Latta and Long Pond Roads in Greece. Bob Dyjak is the founding member of the group. He fashioned the Bagel Bunch after a group he was running with on the east side of Rochester.

That was almost 25 years ago. He organized the Bagel Bunch in Greece in January of 1996. Bob sent out an email to runners he knew and selected a Saturday in January for their first run. The day he chose ended up being an unseasonable 50 degrees, he had eight to ten people show up to run. The next Saturday the temperature was 10 degrees, more seasonable, and still eight runners came to run.

“Our group has runners on every level. Some are training for marathons, others started as walkers and build on their running level week by week,” Dyjak said. The Bagel Bunch Runners have an active membership of about 60 members, with 20 to 25 showing up to run on any given Saturday morning. The running routes are divided into Short, 5 to 6 miles; Medium, 8 to 10 miles; and Large, 20 miles and over. The beauty of meeting at 7:00AM is that most of the runners are done within 1 to 1 1/2 hours from their start time and they have their entire Saturday ahead of them. The Bagel Bunch also have an active Facebook page with 180 members. Their Facebook page is used to keep runners updated on weekly routes, road trips and news about the group. Many members are marathon runners and participate in marathons throughout the year and throughout the country.

The reason the group has survived for almost 25 years is the fact that there is much more to the group than just running. The friendships that have been formed over the years run deep and keep the runners truly connected. Bagel Bunch member Dan Sillick joined in 2002 as a walker with running added as he went along. Sillick said, “The group is a support group. We motivate

each other and give and receive a lot of advice about injuries, recovery and self motivation. It’s not about the shoes and the running clothes, but it is sometimes about the coffee and bagels.” A continued on page 9

Tax Decrease in the 2020 Proposed Budget The Town of Greece has released the proposed budget for the town which includes a reduction in the property tax rate from $6.285 per $1,000 in property value to $6.225 per $1,000 in property value, a 6 cent reduction.

“This is a continuation of our efforts to steadily reduce the town tax rate in the Town of Greece. Our tax rate is now lower than it was ten years ago, and we continue to keep our costs under control. We’ve paid off the debt on the Town Hall and the Library as well. Everything we have done has been to ensure the proper management of town finances. We fully expect to continue on this course for the foreseeable future,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said.

In addition to the proposed 2020 budget tax decrease, the capital plan includes the continuation of the commitment to public infrastructure. Over $2.25 million in cash will be put towards road maintenance and improvements. It includes additional improvements to the service mall area, an allocation for park and playground upgrades and a commitment to green energy initiatives. Most important to note perhaps is there is no borrowing for any capital improvements.

member of the group from the start, Roger Howe said, “There is a social aspect to running with this group. It’s great to be able to talk with other people about persistence. Working together we help each other to achieve our goals.” Howe has been running since the 1970s and has 22 marathons and 53,000 lifetime running miles on his list of achievements. Dyjak and Howe worked together at Kodak and ran together on their lunch hour for many years. Dyjak has 50,000 running miles to his credit, he has been running since 1986.

The Bagel Bunch participates in various community events throughout the year including highway and park cleanups. They run in the “Christmas Lights Run” an informal run through neighborhoods in Greece that are decorated with Christmas lights.

They typically have 25-30 people on the run. They also participate in “Freezeroo” a series of six runs, each eight miles in length, that are scheduled throughout the winter months.

On November 10, 2019, the Bagel Bunch dedicated a memorial bench along the bike path in Basil Marella Park as a tribute to their members who died over the years. The idea for a memorial to honor members that have passed came to Bob Dyjak after he read about similar memorials that running groups honored their members with. The Memorial Bench pays tribute to six members that have passed. The group lost their first member Don Curran in 2004. Greg Christo followed in 2016, Deb Ciulla and Jill Skivington Jackett in 2017 and most recently Anne Procopio and Steve Derks in 2019. Bob Dyjak recalls what one of their members that passed away from breast cancer, Deb Ciulla, said about the group. Dyjak said, “Deb shared that there were two things the group inspired her to do, they got her to go more distance then

she thought she could ever go and to train harder. She looked at us as her friends and she was inspired to set goals.”

The Memorial Bench was constructed by Eagle Scout candidate Bobby Flaherty of Greece as his Eagle Scout project. Along with members of Boy Scout Troop #277, his family, several generous donations and the cooperation of the Town of Greece the bench became a reality. At the bench dedication ceremony sixty friends and family gathered to pay tribute to the runners who have passed. All of the runners honored have made an impact on the lives of others on many different levels and several members of the Bagel Bunch took the opportunity to talk about what these members have meant to them personally, and as a group.

New members are always welcome to join the Bagel Bunch runners on any Saturday morning. Dyjak said, “We are a very friendly group. We welcome everyone at any running or walking level to join us. You choose what you want to do and how far you want to run. We are here for support and encouragement. I hear the same thing from new members all the time. They tell me they could kick themselves for not joining sooner.”

New Greece Performing Arts Society Board President The Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) Board announced that Jonathan Allentoff is their new Board President.

Allentoff is already well-known to GPAS as the Conductor of the Community Orchestra, a member of the GPAS Symphony and an active behind-the-scenes advocate in the past three years for GPAS’s Next Chapter.

Eric Vaughn Johnson, the now former GPAS President, will continue to assist Jonathan’s transition through the end of the year.

Jonathan steps into his new position as GPAS Board President effective immediately.

Johnson says he is “grateful” for his past three years serving as GPAS Board President and will now be focusing his full attention as Executive Director of OFC Creations Theatre Company. In addition, Johnson said that he looks forward to attending GPAS concerts and events, especially the Summer Soiree, an annual fundraising event that he created.

Jonathan Allentoff’’s academic vita and background speak volumes.

Jonathan Allentoff is a nationally acclaimed conductor, composer, performer, clinician, and educator. He holds a Master of Arts degree specializing in Music, Interdisciplinary Arts, Education, and Technology with Honors from Stony Brook University’s School of Professional Development, and he received the Dr. Deborah C. Hecht Award for his MA thesis, “The Positive Cultural Impact of Community Orchestras.”

Actively involved in the Greater Rochester community music scene, Jonathan holds positions as founding music director of the Brockport Symphony and Temple Beth El Orchestras, music director of the GPAS Greece Community Orchestra, and associate conductor and principal arranger for the Brighton Symphony Orchestra.

Jonathan was recently commissioned to write custom arrangements for the Pittsburgh, Knoxville, Muncie, Salina, and Vermont Symphony Orchestras and the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

He was also invited to present a multimedia workshop on the Great American Songbook at the 2019 APME National Conference at New York University. In August 2019, he appeared as a conducting clinician and principal viola for the NYSSMA/NYASTA

He is an active member of APME, ASCAP, ASMAC, ASTA, CODA, NAfME, and NYSSMA. The Greece Performing Arts Society was established in 1969.

Since that time the organization has grown and flourished under the leadership of board presidents and board members, performing group liaisons and committee members who volunteered their time and talents and leadership skills at monthly board meetings, fundraisers, events and concerts within our community.

Historical Marker at North Greece Cemetery Unveiled On November 4, 2019, Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich was joined by Fourth Ward Councilwoman Diana Christodaro, Greece Historian Keith Suhr, Legislator Brian Marianetti, and one of Councilwoman Christodaro’s constituents for an official unveiling ceremony of a historical marker at North Greece Cemetery.

The historical marker was installed in North Greece Cemetery in remembrance of Private Jonathan Wilkinson who was a Revolutionary War Veteran and served with Colonel Baldwin’s Regiment of Artificers as a carpenter during the conflict. Private Wilkinson enlisted on February 16, 1779 and was discharged in 1781. He passed away on January 20th, 1835. Private Wilkinson is one of about 100 Revolutionary War Veterans buried in Monroe County. We are honored to denote his service at North Greece Cemetery, 38 Peck Road, in the Town of Greece.

104 Years Young

Jim Walker of Greece recently celebrated his 104 birthday with his friends and family. Jim has spent most of his life living in the Northeast. His life began in 1915 in Orange, New Jersey, his career led him to the Boston, Massachusetts area where he and his wife raised their family. When Jim retired he and his wife of 55 years moved to Cape Cod. After his wife passed away Jim came to Greece to be close to his daughter Ann. Jim’s career was in the insurance industry but he also served in the Army for four years during World War II. He wishes more young people would enlist in the military. “It would be good for them and good for our country,” said Jim. Jim recalls how different it was when he and fellow servicemen came back from his deployment during his era compared to now. “There were no parades or celebrations. We just came home and hung up our uniforms and went to work,” he said. Jim had the privilege of being part of Honor Flight and went to Washington, DC to visit the memorials for the different wars. “I was very impressed,” he said.

Jim Walker served in the Army for four years during World War II.

Jim was an avid golfer up until very recently. He would be out on the golf course 3-4 times a week and Sunday was always his day to golf with his wife. He continues to be independent and even was driving his car until last year. He only put 1800 miles in two years on his last car, with most of his trips being to Wegmans, doctor appointments and Best Buy. Jim has seen some amazing advancements in technology in his 100 plus years. Although he was born at a time when telephone technology was young, the year he was born was the year long distance calling across the country was first invented. Jim grew up in a time where phone calls were rotary dialed with a switchboard operator connecting the two parties, now he has his own iPhone. Jim likes to text and Facetime his family. According to Jim’s neighbor MaryAnn Vaccaro, “He is a great conversationalist and is always up to date on news and sports, especially his favorite team the Yankees.”

Jim enjoys living his golden years in Greece and he especially likes his neighborhood Villas of Fieldstone. “The people here are very nice and helpful. They look out for me. Greece is a delightful community,” he said. The Town of Greece will be honoring Jim Walker at a Proclamation Ceremony in December.

Greece Town Board Presents Eagle Scout Recognition Award During the Greece Town Board meeting on November 19, 2019, an official Eagle Scout Award Ceremony and Medal presentation was held. The Town of Greece Eagle Scout Recognition Medal is presented to all Boy Scouts who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in their local troop.

A proclamation and medal were presented to Tyler Stevenson who recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop Number 197. Tyler attained the rank of Eagle Scout through his efforts towards clearing the Greece Athena High School courtyard. The bushes in the courtyard were overgrown, the benches were in much-needed repair, and landscaping, edging, weeding, and trimming all needed to be done. Ground Breaking Ceremony for Clearwater Farms On November 1, 2019, a ground breaking ceremony for Clearwater Organic Farms’ new 475,000 square foot hydroponic greenhouse was held.

Clearwater Organic Farms uses cutting-edge hydroponic technology to produce fresh, locally grown, year-round organic baby leaf greens to supply markets throughout New York State. The facility for Clearwater Organic Farms, which will be constructed at the Eastman Business Park in Greece, will be the largest hydroponic commercial greenhouse of its kind in the United States and will

produce more than 2.7 million pounds of fresh produce annually.

Greece Town Council Recognizes Reverend Charles Roberts During the November 19, 2019 Town Board meeting the Board recognized and presented a proclamation to Reverend Charles M. Roberts.

Reverend Roberts was presented with a proclamation in honor of his retirement from full time ministry at John Knox Presbyterian Church in the Town of Greece. He is retiring after nearly 29 years of service. Reverend Roberts has been very active in the community. In addition to pastoring his church, he has served on the town’s Mediation Board, was President of the Greece Ministerial Association for several years, took part in the coordination of the High School Baccalaureate Service, and participated in many Town Prayer Services.

“Reverend Roberts has joined us for Greece Town Board meetings on several occasions to lead us in prayer. We were honored to recognize and celebrate his retirement from full time ministry.

We thank him for all he has done and will continue to do in our community,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said.

Greece Church provides over 1.5 million meals to feed starving children

Lakeshore Community Church recently completed their 8th year in providing and packing manna food packs for children in third world countries who are on the brink of starvation. Feed My Starving Children is a national nonprofit Christian organization that partners with communities and churches throughout the United States to provide nutrition to children who are suffering from malnutrition related to poverty.

Globally, starvation causes half of all the deaths of children under the age of five. Manna packs are developed by food science and nutrition professionals to provide supplementation to children’s nutritional needs and reduce disease and risk of death.

The nutrition found in the special manna packs allow children to grow, thrive, and develop to their full potential.

On November 22 and 23, 2019, Lakeshore Community Church, with the help of volunteers from the church and community, packed over 150,000 meals for FMSC. These meals will save the lives of 424 children by feeding them for one year. “It’s such a privilege to help people less fortunate than us through no fault of their own. We do this because we believe that God has blessed us so that we can be a blessing to others and share His love with as many people as possible,” said Senior Pastor Vince DiPaola.

Lakeshore Community Church has provided 1,580,688 meals since it began working with FMSC. In the past eight years, Lake-

The Hidden Costs of Not Enough Sleep

by Tami Mungenast, CPT CNWC CES As 2020 rolls out many start the New Year with a renewed spirit and motivation to make some changes to their lifestyle to improve their health. There is one simple lifestyle change that is often overlooked, free of charge and can significantly improve your mind and body - it’s that five letter word - Sleep!

Sleep is often the first thing to get cut when we are stressed and pressed for time. Often we look at a good night’s sleep as a luxury item, not a critical component of health. There can be long term health ramifications to not getting enough sleep. At first the cost of poor sleep habits go unnoticed, but research and science show that they can lead to declined health that includes obesity, heart disease and poor immune system function. Health experts are now making the connections between lack of sufficient sleep long term to increased risks to chronic illnesses. Studies are showing that getting regular high quality sleep is equally as important as good nutrition and exercise for overall health and wellness.

Some effects of poor sleep habits include: •Weight Gain- Those sleeping less than six hours per night are regu-

larly shown to have a higher risk for excess body fat. Those who slept eight hours had the lowest body fat percentage in the study.

•Type 2 Diabetes- Studies also indicated that those having less than five hours sleep on average have a greater increase of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is that the same studies have also found that improved sleep can positively influence blood sugar control and reduce the effects of type 2 diabetes.

•Cardiovascular Risks- Heart disease was also increased in studies of modestly reduced sleep (six to seven hours per night). There is also growing evidence of a connection between sleep loss caused by obstructive sleep apnea and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, stroke, coronary heart disease, and irregular heart beat.

•Immune System Health- The immune system is our body’s weapon to fight off viruses like the common cold and kill cancer cells as well as other important health functions that are also impacted by our sleep quality and quantity. Immune system and sleep interactions are well documented. Sleep deprivation is shown to increase inflammation and our ability to fight infection leading to higher risk of coming down with viruses. Studies show that those with less than seven hours sleep on average are three times more likely to come down with a cold than those who receive eight hours sleep.

Adults should aim for a good quality of 7-8 hours sleep. Sleep helps maintain vital health functions and enhance our body’s ability to recover from the wear and tear of every day life. While sleeping well is no guarantee of good health, it does help to maintain many vital functions.

One of the most important of these functions may be to provide cells and tissues with the opportunity to recover from the wear and tear of daily life. Major restorative functions in the body such as tissue repair, muscle growth, and protein synthesis occur almost exclusively during sleep. Not only will more sleep help us feel better but also can help increase our ability to live healthier.
