New football exhibit at Greece Museum

Leo Lyons, the Rochester Jeffersons and the NFL Exhibit

Opening Sunday, May 18 at the Greece Museum

The Greece Historical Society will unveil a new exhibit – Leo Lyons, the Rochester Jeffersons and the NFL – at the Greece Museum on Sunday, May 18.

All the items in this exhibit, curated by John Steffenhagen, originally belonged to Leo V. Lyons (his great-grandfather), a co-founder of the National Football League. Leo was named League Historian by all team owners at a league meeting in Los Angeles in 1960. He was given the title “Historian” because Leo collected items associated with the NFL from day one and throughout the first several decades.

Leo’s connection to Greece, NY, involves his famous “Stadium Club” get-togethers, dinners and banquets at the Edgewater and the Island Cottage Hotel during the 1940s through the 1960s that promoted and honored Rochester sports figures. Many players from the Jeffersons were, at one time or another, Greece residents. Leo was a popular member at both Lake Shore (down the road from his house on Beach Avenue) and Ridgemont Country Clubs during 1930s to 1960s. He was elected president of Lake Shore Country Club in 1944.

John Steffenhagen, has spent the last 25 years researching his great grandfather, Leo Lyons, one of ten team owners who in 1920 formed the National Football League. His team was the Rochester Jeffersons. John currently has, from Leo, a large collection of early NFL items that he enjoys displaying and sharing their stories.

Watch for the release of the new book, The Rochester Jeffersons and the Birth of the NFL, due this summer. It is currently available to preorder.

Art At Any Age

Greece resident, Earl Hume, is a self-taught artist, his specialty is pen and ink drawings. He joined many local art clubs after his retirement from Kodak. He says, “Art clubs are great! They provide speakers that share their talents and ideas, you get to meet other people that share a love of art, and you become involved with the art community.”

After his retirement, he went right to work creating artwork to sell at local outdoor art shows. He said, “I spent many summer weekends at art shows. I really enjoyed talking to the people that came in to buy my art, and I had many repeat customers.” At 97 years old, he still works every day for an hour or two in a studio sketching and adding details to his artwork.

Hume grew up in Rochester and enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 18. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. He started as a Seaman and was moved up to 2nd Class Carpenter and 2nd Class Damage Control. He served for eight years in the Navy. After his service he and his wife, Anna, built a home in Gates where they raised their two daughters Deborah and Karen. He was employed by the Eastman Kodak Company, and worked security. He retired from Kodak in 1983.

Earl Hume believes that you should pick one or two things in your life and work hard to master them.

GHS hosting Strawberry & Dessert Tasting fundraiser festival

The Greece Historical Society will host their annual Strawberry & Dessert Tasting fundraiser festival at the Greece Town Hall pavilion on Monday, June 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, and free for children ages 5 and under.

This year, strawberry shortcake will will be offered by Wegmans, along with dessert samples from Special T Cakes & Desserts, Soulistic Sweets, Great American Diner, Starlight Breads & Bakes, and Mayer’s Lake Ontario Winery. In addition, grilled foods will be available for purchase from local grilling experts, Barton’s Parkside Hots.

The Greece Historical Society has again partnered with the Town of Greece, and thanks to Supervisor Bill Reilich and staff, the festival will again be held at the Town Pavilion on the Town Hall Campus.

The annual festival started in 1974 when the Society members turned their June meeting into a strawberry social and invited the community to join them on the grounds of the Newcomb homestead. When the Society’s offices and museum relocated to 595Long Pond Road, it became a fundraiser to help defray the costs of the move and renovation of their new facility.

Over time, the festival changed from Society volunteers making and serving strawberry shortcake and offering homemade bake

goods for sale, to commercial businesses offering dessert samples, while adding an entertaining DJ, community group information tables, clowns for children, door prizes, and raffles. It has become an annul picnic for the whole community. Free parking is available at the Town Hall Campus

Amateur radio enthusiasts to gather for 92nd festival

The Rochester Amateur Radio Association (RARA) will hold its 92nd amateur radio festival on Saturday, June 21, 2025. This one-day event will be held at the Barnard Fire Field, 410 Maiden Lane, Rochester NY.

The “hamfest” is an opportunity for the general public to learn about the amateur radio hobby, and for amateur radio enthusiasts to buy and sell equipment as well as to socialize with other “hams.” The festival will feature technical presentations on a variety of amateur radio topics of interest to both beginners and experienced hams. Food will also be available.

The hamfest will also include a flea market where individuals can sell radio equipment and other electronics. The festival will feature free amateur radio license testing, and a raffle with the grand prize being a Bioenno 12 Volt Solar Battery charging system.

The festival grounds open to flea market vendors at 7 a.m. and to the public at 8 a.m. Admission is $10 per person, with free admis-

sion provided to students, volunteers, and RARA club members. There is an additional $5 charge to sell items in the flea market. Free overnight RV parking will also be available.

Amateur radio has proven time and time again to be a dependable communication method when cellular phones, landlines, and other communications fail. This was recently demonstrated when Hurricane Helene struck North Carolina, where radio amateurs provided vital communication support to local authorities related to aid distribution, road closures, and emergency shelters. Amateur radio also provides opportunities for hobbyists to experiment with satellite communication, portable operation, voice as well as digital wireless communication, and to give back to the community by providing communication support for local charity events.

Rochester Counseling Group prioritizes health, wellness, and community

As a proud, family-owned and operated local business, Rochester Counseling Group is committed to delivering exceptional, compassionate care with a thoughtful touch. Since its opening in 2022, RCG has served well over 600 clients who may not have otherwise found treatment. “Our mission goes beyond just improving the mental health of our clients — we also deeply value the wellbeing of the dedicated therapists who provide that care,”

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich

As the warmer weather settles in, I’m looking forward to sharing all the exciting details of our upcoming Summer Town Events!

if we knew of any mental health providers who were taking clients. Having the courage to send that first email or voicemail is often the hardest part of therapy. To hear stories of someone taking the leap and then having to wait for an email back that never came or to be told this person does not have space is heartbreaking. It is such an intimidating process and most people are not even sure about what to look for in a therapist.”

That is why RCG makes a point of updating their website every week with the latest availability and information, helping clients connect quickly and confidently with the care they need. They have a dedicated Intake Specialist, with over 20 years of experience in mental health, who will help each person find the right fit and answer any questions. Their commitment to accessibility also extends to affordability — RCG accepts most local major insurance plans, making quality care within reach for more families in our community. RCG has therapists who treat all ages. Some of their providers specialize in seeing children (as young as three years old) and young adults, while other therapists provide addictions work, as well as stress, anxiety, and depression management.

Peggy said, “Each therapist that is on our team is highly qualified and independently licensed to treat clients in the state of NY. This means that your therapist, at a minimum, has: six years of education in their field followed by at least two years of post-graduate experience and study.”

With a foundation built on trust, compassion, and communication, their business continues to improve — not just as a provider, but as a neighbor you can count on.

RCG does not currently offer psychiatric services, couples counseling, or prescribe medication. However, they coordinate with several specific, vetted providers who do and can offer referrals to them. There may be times where all providers may be full. When this occurs, RCG will continue to offer referral options to other area providers they trust to help the Greece community.

Eagle Scout Award Medal presented to Brady Cook

Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich was joined by Greece Town Board Members Dave DiPonzio, Mike Bloomer, Bill Murphy, and Diana Christodaro for an official Eagle

“It is an honor for me to present this proclamation and medal to the hard working and determined young man who has shown that commitment and perseverance lead to success,” said Supervisor Bill Reilich.

Brady Cook of Scout Troop 240 was recognized for his exceptional leadership and community service in completing his Eagle Scout project. After noticing the basketball

courts at Basil Marella Park were in disrepair, Brady partnered with the Town and Parks and Recreation Director Peter O’Brien to restore them. With the Town’s support in removing and delivering the rusted backboards, Brady and his team sanded, repainted, and refurbished four backboards and hoops, added new nets, and applied regulation decals. He also led a crew of scouts and adults in painting the support posts, totaling 73.5 volunteer hours from 11 individuals. The $500 project was fully funded by generous donations from family and friends, and the upgraded courts have been met with enthusiastic community feedback. Brady’s efforts are a true testament to the values of the Eagle Scout rank – leadership, service, and dedication.

Scouting America, one of the United States largest youth organizations, is dedicated to preparing young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The Eagle Scout Award is attained after countless hours of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication to the scouting creed. For more information on Scouting America, visit www.scouting.org.

Greece Police Department public safety reminder: Off-road vehicles don’t belong on neighborhood streets

In the Town of Greece, dirt bikes, ATVs, golf carts, and other off-road or unregistered motorized vehicles are not allowed on public roads, sidewalks, or through neighborhoods.

These vehicles are not street-legal and pose serious safety risks to riders, pedestrians, and other drivers – especially when they’re driven at high speeds or recklessly. We’ve received increased reports of these vehicles speeding through residential areas, creating dangerous conditions for families, children playing outside, and everyday traffic.

Parents, please take a moment to talk to your kids about the risks and responsibilities that come with operating these types of vehicles. What may seem like fun can quickly turn into a life-changing accident or legal issue. Teaching respect for our roads and our neighbors starts at home. Keep it safe. Keep it legal. Keep it respectful.

Camp Invention’s summer STEM program coming to Holy Cross School

Camp Invention®, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment program, is coming to Holy Cross School the week of July 7–11, 2025.

A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame® in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in grades K-6 to tap into their natural curiosity and use their creativity to solve problems. Through hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes STEM learning; builds confidence, leadership, perseverance and resourcefulness; and encourages entrepreneurship – all in a fun and engaging environment.

Each year, the program features a new curriculum inspired by some of the nation’s most world-changing inventors – the National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees. This year’s Discover program encourages children to be confident in their ideas and explore their innovativeness through hands-on activities including:

•In Control™: Campers take control of their innovation journey as they head out on the ultimate road trip. From assembling a custom control panel with a transmitter and receiver, to creating a prototype of their own artificial intelligence-inspired bobblehead assistant, they invent their way around every bump and twist in the road.

•Illusion Workshop™: Children discover the mesmerizing world of illusions, where things are not always as they appear. Through hands-on activities and experiments, they go behind the scenes of the tech tricks used in theme parks, animated films and theater. Using design and electrical engineering skills, campers build an animation device to bring drawings to life.

•Claw Arcade™: Campers use their creativity and engineering skills to construct a functional Claw Arcade out of cardboard. They explore physics in easy-to-reach ways as they make hands-on discoveries about the science behind claw machines.

•Penguin Launch™: Children embark on an eco-expedition to investigate penguins and the ice and snow of Antarctica. Along the

way, they discover the fascinating connections between the technology and training used to explore Antarctica and outer space. From flippers and flingers to exploring high-wingers, children are sure to have a blast as they propel Pengy, a research assistant penguin, across the South Pole and beyond!

“My son recently attended Camp Invention, and it was an absolutely phenomenal experience for him,” said the parent of a 2024 Camp Invention camper. “The camp’s focus on creativity, problem solving and innovation truly sparked his curiosity and imagination.”

All local Camp Invention programs are facilitated and taught by qualified educators who reside and teach in the community. Camp Invention serves 140,000 students every year and partners with more than 2,600 schools and districts across the nation. For more information or to register, visit invent.org/camp.
