Schools across Monroe County recently welcomed an exciting, hands-on career exploration event that brought the farm to the classroom. Students engaged in a series of interactive learning stations that connected science concepts with real-world agricultural careers. From building barns using Keva blocks in the “Build-a-Barn Engineering Challenge” to designing wind energy models, youth explored roles like civil engineer, architect, and sustainability consultant. A wind turbine demonstration helped older students understand green energy solutions, while younger learners interacted with simple windmill models. One student summed up the day perfectly: “You all are the bomb!”
Additional stations allowed students to examine animal nutrition by comparing different types of feed, linking to careers in veterinary science and chemistry. The “Connect with Pollinators” bubble-wrap painting activity helped learners understand the relationship between pollinators, crops, and the food system. A tasting station featuring ranch dressing and fresh vegetables sparked discussions about healthy food choices, while the “cow pot” planting activity showed how farms reduce waste through innovation—highlighting historical inventors like Henry Ford. Students at Mary Cariola’s East Ave campus also had some very special animal guests, making their experience even more memorable with real-life connections to the animals they were learning about. This engaging educational event was made possible through the support of the Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority (GVRMA).

Ridge Road Fire District awarded $50,000 grant for SCBA air cylinder filling system
The Ridge Road Fire District has been awarded a $50,000 grant from New York State Assemblyman Josh Jensen to support the acquisition and installation of a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) air cylinder filling system.
This critical funding will enable the Ridge Road Fire District to significantly enhance the safety and operational readiness of its firefighters by ensuring a reliable, on-site air supply for SCBA units. The new air filling system will not only streamline emergency response capabilities but will also improve training and day-to-day preparedness.
Assemblyman Jensen presented the grant to department leadership on June 15, 2025, highlighting his ongoing commitment to
supporting first responders and improve public safety infrastructure throughout our community.
“We are incredibly grateful to Assemblyman Jensen for his continued support and recognition of the essential work our team does every day,” said Chief Sean McGarry. “This new SCBA air filling system is a vital upgrade that will directly benefit the safety of our personnel and the residents we serve.”
This investment reflects a shared commitment between local government and emergency services to maintain the highest standards of readiness, efficiency, and firefighter safety.

Greece dedicates courthouse in honor of former Supervisor John T. Auberger
The Town of Greece recently unveiled a plaque officially dedicating the Greece Town Court in honor of former Town Supervisor John (Jack) T. Auberger, recognizing his lasting contributions to the town’s infrastructure and community-focused leadership.
Joining the celebration were Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich, former Supervisor John T. Auberger, Deputy Town Supervisor Kirk Morris, and Councilman Bill Murphy, Receiver of Taxes Andrew Conlon, along with town officials and community members.
“Yesterday we honored a man whose legacy is deeply rooted in the progress and growth of the Town of Greece,” said Supervisor Reilich. “Supervisor Auberger’s leadership brought to life a vision of consolidating town services into a centralized campus—one that included relocating our court from a leased strip mall to this modern, permanent home.”
The Greece Town Court, a $3 million, 11,000-square-foot facility located at 4 Vince Tofany Boulevard, now houses two courtrooms – one large enough to accommodate 150 people – separate holding areas for male and female detainees, and full ADA compliance. This move eliminated a $100,000 annual lease the town had paid since 1990, saving taxpayers money and advancing a more efficient future.
“This court is more than just a building. It’s a vital part of how our town functions and upholds the law,” said Supervisor Reilich. “The renovations reflect our dedication to public service at the highest standard.”
The dedication follows the unanimous July 18, 2024 vote by the Greece Town Board to officially name the courthouse the John T. Auberger Court. The naming recognizes Auberger’s thoughtful planning, sound fiscal management, and unwavering commitment to serving the residents of Greece.
“John’s leadership laid the groundwork for facilities like this,” added Supervisor Reilich. “Yesterday’s dedication is a symbol of gratitude, a recognition of service, and a reminder that good leadership leaves a lasting legacy.”

Greece Historical Society plans activities to celebrate the Erie Canal Bicentennial
As the Erie Canal celebrates the bicentennial of its completion this year, cities, towns and villages across the 363-mile route are planning activities to recognize this milestone. The Greece Historical Society is joining the celebration this summer with a few activities of its own.
Without a canal port village, many residents and visitors do not realize that the historic waterway flows through the Town of Greece and that the Canal had an important impact on the town. In fact, back in the mid-to-late 1800s, the hamlet of South Greece, often referred to as Henpeck, had a thriving port complete with at least three grocery stores, a post office, schoolhouse, fruit drying house, warehouse, blacksmith shop, homes, doctors’ offices, train depot, flower seed farm, and later even a functioning lock.
To bring attention to the Erie Canal in Greece, the Greece Historical Society’s Erie Canal Bicentennial Committee has created a self-guided “passport” of key locations in town that were associated with the canal, a museum exhibit, and is planning an event right on the Canal in August.
of A Heritage Trail Passport: South Greece on the Erie Canal, published by the Greece Historical Society for the Erie Canal Bicentennial. Provided photo
A Heritage Trail Passport: South Greece on the Erie Canal shares a little bit of Greece canal history at 29 stops in South Greece. Complete with photos, maps, and a bibliography, the 24-page booklet has space available to check off each site and note the date seen. (Please note: Most of these sites are private and not open to the public but can be viewed from the road or canal trail.)
You can pick up a Passport at the gift shop in the Greece Museum, 595 Long Pond Road, for no charge (although donations are gratefully accepted) on Sundays from 1:30 to 4 p.m., or at any of the Greece Historical Society’s upcoming Erie Canal 200 events in August and September. Once the passport is completed, return to the Greece Museum to be entered into a drawing for a one-year membership to the Greece Historical Society.
The museum exhibit “Four Miles Along the Towpath: South Greece on the Erie Canal” will open in August and detail the people, places, and businesses associated with the Canal in South Greece. The exhibit can be viewed whenever the museum is open.
To help bring the Passport to life, on Saturday, August 16, the Greece Historical Society will present its main Erie Canal 200 event: “Four Miles Along the Towpath: South Greece on the Erie Canal.” The event will be held at the Towpath Shelter and the Erie Canal Trail at Greece Canal Park, 241 Elmgrove Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants can walk along the towpath as docents introduce them to the thriving canal port of Henpeck in South Greece. Exhibits and family activities will be located in the Towpath Shelter. The event is free and open to the public.
Earlier that week, on Tuesday, August 12, the Greece Historical Society will partner with the Greece Public Library to bring

the Buffalo Maritime Center’s Exhibit and Collections Manager Eddie Knibloe to the library, 2 Vince Tofany Boulevard, to discuss the Center’s community boatbuilding project to recreate the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief and the role the original boat played in the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. The talk, “Recreating the Seneca Chief,” will also detail what visitors can expect when the canal boat travels from Buffalo to New York City to commemorate the Erie Canal Bicentennial in September. Registration is required for this event at: https://greecepl.librarycalendar.com/event/ greece-historical-society-32958.
Looking to September, the Greece Historical Society’s monthly meeting will feature “From New York to Niagara Falls: Ten Days on the Erie Canal,” on Tuesday, September 9, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Greece Central Transportation and Support Services Facility, 1780 Latta Road. Learn what it was like to travel on a packet boat circa 1840 via a fictional narrative based on eyewitness travel journals from the Erie Canal’s early days. Greece Post #468 hosting NY State American Legion Baseball Senior Division Championship
Take me out to the ball game. Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks. What memories of those days at the ball field.
The American Legion Baseball league was founded in 1925 in South Dakota and has been able to survive with its rich traditions into 2025. It’s a program that has enriched many lives by teaching the importance of sportsmanship, good health, and active citizenship within our communities.
This year, for the first time in recent memory, the New York State American Legion Senior Division
will be 15 games played, running from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the tournament. There is a cost per game or weekend passes can be purchased at the gates. For the complete game schedule, go to nylegionbaseball.com and click on Senior Division.
The Championship Tournament will be an eight team double elimination format with the Champions of the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Districts participating as well as the runner-up of the 5th District and the host team from Greece Post #468.
American Legion Baseball is a national institution. Its reputation is one of the most successful and traditionally rich amateur athletic leagues. The league’s competitive program is played by 13 to 19-year-olds all from and within the United States and Canada. The competition is fierce, intense, and powerful. These upcoming games are a showcase and the largest source of recruitment talent for the major leagues. Prominent notables like Yogi Berra, Bob Feller, and Stan Musial all started their careers playing on the fields of their local legions. All three were later inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
If you are looking for something to do with your family or just a fun day out, head over to RIT and support your hometown Greece Post #468 Baseball Team. Don’t forget that hot dog and peanuts.
The Greece Post #468 team won back-to-back Senior Division Championships in 2022 and 2023. Before the 2022 tournament, a Rochester-area team had not won an American Legion state title in 55 years. The 2023 team is shown above. File photo.

Brockport Arts Festival features attractions for all
by Pat Baker
The 29th annual Brockport Arts Festival will be held August 9 and 10 on Brockport’s Main Street. Times are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The festival has grown to be one of the best-attended events in the region and offers quality artists, delicious food, and entertaining performers.
Allen Hopkins, legendary Rochester area folk singer, will be entertaining festival-goers on Sunday, August 10, at 1 p.m. at St. Luke’s Church in the center of the village.
Hopkins, an exceptionally versatile musician with expertise on a wide range of instruments, has a vast repertoire of folk and traditional songs and attracts a wide variety of people with his ability to play at least a dozen instruments. He usually brings samples from his personal collection to his performances. Even more impressive is the historical knowledge he shares of the pieces he performs.
New York is currently celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal’s completion. This year, Hopkins was asked to direct his encyclopedic knowledge to songs related to the canal which passes through the middle of the festival. Note the newly rebuilt Main Street lift bridge is scheduled to be open by festival time.
For those interested in more of Hopkins’ background, note that he regularly teaches beginners how to play harmonica, ukulele, etc. at the Hochstein School in Rochester. He has been invited for decades to the prestigious New England Folk Festival where he often leads the closing. He was one the original members of the Flint Hill Folks who played at the Genesee Country Village from its origin in 1975 to recent times. Last year he was invited to play before the annual “Lifespan Celebration of the Aging” dinner featuring the award-winning singer/songwriter Judy Collins. He also plays at hundreds of local celebrations, schools, and nursing homes. Hopkins agrees with Collins’ statement, “We can all perform at any age.”
For more information about the Brockport Arts Festival, visit https://brockportny.org/brockport-arts-festival/.
Allen Hopkins is enthusiastically joined by an unidentified youth in this photo taken at a previous Brockport Arts Festival. By the way, photographer Pat Baker and Hopkins would love to know if the now adult youngster in the photo continued his interest in music (and performing).
Greece native appointed Officer in Charge of major military training operation
In a distinguished career spanning over 15 years with the U.S. Air Force, Major Zachary Callahan, a native of Greece, now residing in Macedon with wife and family, has taken on a pivotal role as the Commander of a U.S. Department of Defense innovative military initiative. Selected for his exceptional leadership skills and operational experience, Major Callahan will oversee “Operation Healthy Ellwood,” a Military-wide Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) mission set to take place from July 20 to August 3, 2025, in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania.
Operation Healthy Ellwood aims to provide vital medical, dental, optometry, mental health, and veterinary services to underserved communities throughout the United States while simultaneously offering invaluable training for military personnel. The initiative is a perfect blend of service and readiness, enabling service members to hone their skills while making a positive impact on the lives of civilians in need. In 2025 alone, 36 IRT missions are planned, involving approximately 3,500 service members across 23 U.S. states and territories.
A member of the Air Force Reserves stationed at Niagara Falls Air Force Base, Major Callahan has dedicated himself to serving his country since commissioning in 2010. His journey has seen him rise through the ranks, displaying unwavering commitment and a passion for service that has earned him numerous commendations throughout his military career. Back home, he serves as an active member of Rochester Honor Flight, a volunteer firefighter for West Walworth Fire Department, an EMT for Western Wayne Ambulance, and is a full-time nurse for the University of Rochester’s Mobile Stroke Unit.
The current leadership team of Operation Healthy Ellwood at a training session in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania.
continued from page 16
However, the life of a military officer comes with significant sacrifices, particularly for those with families. Major Callahan is a devoted husband and stepfather to a 13-year-old boy, and he and his wife have recently welcomed two foster children into their home. His extended military engagements and training missions often mean long periods away from home, leading to emotional
challenges for both him and his family. “Being away from them is the hardest part of my service,” Major Callahan says. “Each time I leave, I know I’m fulfilling my duty, but it doesn’t make the goodbye easier.” His wife also shares the challenges of military life, showcasing incredible strength and resilience as she manages household responsibilities and supports their children through the absences. “It’s a family commitment,” she says. “We all serve in our way. The kids see what their dad does and understand the importance, but it still weighs on them when he’s gone.” The close-knit community within the Rochester area has provided immense support to the Callahan family, often rallying around them during his military obligations. Neighbors and friends step in to help with childcare, meal preparations, and emotional support, fostering a sense of solidarity in the face of challenges brought on by military life.
As Major Callahan gears up for Operation Healthy Ellwood, he reflects on the deeper purpose of his service. “It’s not just about the mission. It’s about the people we help and the lives we change,” he asserts. “Every hour spent in training is an investment in our ability to give back to the community.” Through his leadership, Major Callahan is expected to make a significant impact not only on the lives of those served by Operation Healthy Ellwood but also as an inspiration to his fellow service members and the next generation of Air Force recruits. In serving his country, he continues to demonstrate that true valor is not just in the call to duty but also in the sacrifices made by families who support those calls. As the operation date approaches, community members and family alike stand proud, ready to support Major Callahan in his leadership role, knowing that his dedication is a testament to the service and sacrifice that define the United States Air Force.
