It all starts with a dream

Dreams precede everything; all actions and all creations. Truly, everything does start with a dream. Dreaming is not an idle activity. It’s not an escape from reality. Dreams are the foundation of all creativity.

The type of dreaming I’m talking about doesn’t just occur while you are sleeping. The thoughts occupy your mind constantly, while you are awake as well as resting. These types of dreams stick in your mind. They become a mental obsession. When your mind is focused on a specific detailed dream, it will lead you toward a path that will transform your dream to reality.

Dreaming is healthy, allowing you to explore different scenarios and options. Without dreams, you can’t venture beyond your perceived limits. For maximum effectiveness, a dream should be as detailed as possible. It shouldn’t be conceived in general terms such as, “if I were rich,” or “if I only had this,” or if I only had that.” Without dreams, people would still be living in caves. Every element of society is the result of dreaming. Our country is the product of a dream. Dreams precede reality. There are no limits to what you can dream about. Health, relationships, success, finances, career, and lifestyle are all valid topics.

They become resigned to their lot in life and disconnected from the infinite potential that resides within.

People who have given up will try to discourage others by using their own disappointments as evidence that dreams are a waste of time. Typically, being labeled a dreamer has a negative connotation. The implication is that a dreamer is not grounded in reality and is wasting their time chasing rainbows.

The dreamer will often be ridiculed and chided. Without a solid understanding of the value of dreaming, the dreamer runs the risk of abandoning their dreams in the face of peer pressure. Should this happen, it would be a real waste. Without dreams, one is in jeopardy of squandering their future.

Among the scholarship recipients are Byron-Bergen’s Anna McLaughlin and Churchville-Chili’s Blake Rule. They are in the front center of the photo.

Your dreams shouldn’t be a passing thought or whim. They should embody specifics you have a burning desire for. They should be something you are willing to work for and expend whatever effort is required. Dreams can and do come true, but not by themselves. You have to make them happen.

There are those who have a lotto mentality for their dreams. They are only willing to invest a dollar in the hopes of winning millions. Sure, there will be a winner, but the chance is one in millions that it will be you. When people have this lotto mentality, they are constantly disappointed. As a result, they wind up jaded and give up on their dreams.

Dreams have no constraints. Dreams are the seeds from which you can create a robust life. Guard your dreams. Don’t allow others to influence you to relinquish your dreams. You don’t have to share your dreams nor do you need the approval or acceptance of others.

Turning your dreams into reality requires action, determination, and perseverance. If not for dreamers our country never would have been founded. We would have no telephones, no electricity, no cars, no TV or radio, and no medical breakthroughs. In short, if people throughout history had not pursued their dreams we would still be in the dark ages.

Go ahead and dream. Picture your life any way you would like it to be. Don’t put any limitations on your vision. Keep your dream in the front of your mind and review it daily. Take action and turn your dreams into reality.

Local students among ESL scholarship recipients

For the tenth consecutive year, ESL Federal Credit Union has awarded 10 college-bound high school students with $2,000 scholarships each as part of the ESL College Scholarship program. ESL recognized students who demonstrated how they help their community in a unique and meaningful way.

This year’s scholarship award recipients are:

•Aasera Amiger, Penfield HS

•Kaylee Duda, Rush-Henrietta HS

•Andrew He, Pittsford Mendon HS

•Sawyer Hoyt, Pittsford Mendon HS

•Aiden Johnson, Rush Henrietta HS

•Anna McLaughlin, Byron-Bergen SHS

•Mikalya Miller, Newark SHS

•Abigail Provo, Mount Morris SHS

•Hazel Roberts, Joseph C. Wilson Magnet

High School, Rochester City School District

•Blake Rule, Churchville-Chili SHS

“It is an honor to recognize the recipients of this year’s ESL College Scholarship whose commitment and leadership serves as an inspiration to us all.” said Rich Pulvino,

vice president/director, Marketing, ESL Federal Credit Union. “This year’s scholars are positively impacting their communities throughout the Greater Rochester region in meaningful ways and we are pleased to support them as they continue their pursuits into higher education.”

Application requirements included:

•A member in good standing at ESL Federal Credit Union

•A high school senior in the Greater Rochester area during 2024/2025 school year

•Attending an accredited college or university in Fall 2025

More than 150 applicants applied for this year’s ESL College Scholarship. Applicants needed to provide official copies of their transcripts, letters of recommendation from a school official and community/volunteer organization, and a list of extracurricular activities and community service. In alignment with the ESL Purpose, students also needed to submit an essay about how they help their community thrive and prosper. Provided information and photo

The benefits of extracurricular activities for college students

Assimilating into campus life at a college or university can take time. After all, much changes between high school and college. Residential students may find college is the first time they spend considerable time away from home among their peers.

College students have more responsibility than their counterparts in high school. College students must manage their schedules, get to class on time without help from Mom and Dad and speak with professors on their own behalf.

One way to mitigate some of the stress that comes with the increased responsibility of college is to take full advantage of campus life. This includes participating in extracurricular activities. High school students may participate in extracurriculars because they know they look good on college applications. But now that college is here, the benefits of

extracurriculars may be slightly different.

•Physical activity: The Freshman 15 is no urban legend. The National Center for Biotechnology Information says that while most college students do not gain 15 pounds freshman year, a lot do gain some weight upon entering college. A 2008 study published in the Journal of American College Health found the average weight gain upon entering college was 2.7 pounds, with about half of students polled gaining weight. Extracurricular activities, like sports and additional physical pursuits, can help college students maintain a healthy weight even when consuming some not-so-healthy dining hall fare.

•Avoid poor habits: A 2023 study by the Afterschool Alliance found that students who participate in extracurricular activities at least two days a week are less likely to smoke marijuana and drink alcohol. These

students also are less likely to miss class without a reason.

•Networking: Students interact with their peers during curriculum-related clubs, musical performances or sports practices and games. Finding common ground and making new connections is a cornerstone of success in the professional world. Extracurriculars can helps students develop networking skills that will be useful in the future.

•Improved mental health: Getting involved can counter feelings of loneliness or boredom that many students feel, especially in their first year at school, says Psychology Today. Rather than feeling unsure and isolated, participation in extracurricular activities can give students reason to chat with new people beyond the rigors of class.

•Future connections: Some extracurriculars can pay professional dividends. Academic

and social Greek organizations have very strong alumni networks, which can help graduates secure interviews and job offers.

•Better grades: There is evidence that managing multiple extracurriculars helps students academically. Cambridge International Education says juggling multiple commitments helps a student value time management, which carries over into school work.

•Self-esteem: Participating in activities can boost confidence and self-esteem. Taking on leadership roles in extracurriculars can further a positive self-image as well.

Extracurricular activities can offer a wide-ranging array of benefits for college students..

Make All the Difference Scholarships and Awards

The Monroe 2-Orleans Educational Foundation funds scholarships and awards for students for whom alternative programs have “made all the difference.” The nature of what the Educational Foundation aspires to celebrate is unique. Make All the Difference applicants are not asked to measure themselves against a single standard of achievement and potential. Rather, they are asked to show how alternative education has made a significant difference in their lives, how they have made a difference for themselves, and how the partnership between themselves and their eligible programs will make a difference for their future. Make All the Difference Scholarships and Awards recognize outstanding examples of how the convergence of alternative education programs, dedicated staff and engaged students can Make All the Difference in a student’s life, in ways that general education is not designed to do.

Congratulations 2025 Graduates!

Gold in five, medals in 11 for CTE students at SkillsUSA states

Seven Dental Assisting students combined for second place in Opening and Closing Ceremonies: Grace Berardicurti (ChurchvilleChili); Genevieve Contrera (Brockport); Brianna Ferguson (Churchville-Chili); Brianna Gilbert (Greece); Jordyn Henderson (Greece); Emily Killeen (Hilton); and Kya Vargas (Spencerport).

The 2025 New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships took place at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse from April 23-25. Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES was represented by more than 80 students as competitors, delegates and event workers. Twenty-one BOCES 2 CTE students earned 11 medals in the championship competitions, and one student was elected as a 2025-26 state officer.

Four students from BOCES 2 placed first in their respective individual competitions: Dental Assisting student Julia Svyrydyuk (Hilton) in Dental Assisting; Culinary Arts student Avery Frisch (Spencerport) in Action Skills Basic; HVAC student Michael Hare (Hilton) in Plumbing; and Baking student Kathryn Tabor (Wheatland-Chili) in Cake Decorating.

On the team side, four construction program students teamed up to win first place in TeamWorks: Carpentry students Daniel Sidore (Brockport) and Henry Wallington (Brockport); HVAC student Evan Prus (Hilton); and Residential and Commercial Electrical student Ethan Race (Holley).

Individual and team second-place finishes were also won by BOCES 2 CTE students. Auto Body and Collision Repair Technology student Racelyn Lippa (Gates Chili) earned second place in Collision Repair Technology, while Dental Assisting student Saniyha Harris (Spencerport) captured silver in Dental Assisting.

Rounding out the medal count were Computer Technology student Yushua Nieves (Brockport) in Information Technology Services, Carpentry student Adam Frech (Greece) in Carpentry and the Food Services duo of Vincenzo Gagliano (ChurchvilleChili) and Connor McGarrity (Hilton) in Community Action Basic.

In addition to the medals, a BOCES 2 CTE student also won a state officer position for next school year. Dental Assisting student Xavier Williams (Gates Chili) was elected as a 2025-26 New York State SkillsUSA Officer. He will be an officer at large until after training at the national conference.

Leadership activities are also a core function of the event and BOCES 2 CTE had two students participating in leadership roles and activities as elected positions. Dental

Assisting student Payal Gajmer (ChurchvilleChili) and Medical Laboratory Assisting and Phlebotomy student Savannah Wehner (Spencerport) attended the conference as one of the last duties in their state and regional roles, respectively.

Several BOCES 2 CTE students participated as delegates during the event. BOCES 2 CTE was represented by Cosmetology students Ashlee Ahern (Hilton) and Dior Powell (Churchville-Chili); Culinary Arts student Ethan Schwalm (Gates Chili); and Dental Assisting students Ava Farrell (Hilton),

Claudette Likasi (Churchville-Chili), Lillian Juzwiak (Spencerport), Daniella Neidert (Hilton), Ilona Svyrydyuk (Brockport) and Joshua Sauers (Brockport).

Additionally, Criminal Justice students Aaron Peters (Gates Chili) and Ariel Travis (Gates Chili) served as part of the Security Corps.

During the awards ceremony, the BOCES 2 CTE SkillsUSA chapter earned recognition as a 2025 Model of Excellence, an honor given annually to the nation’s top 24 SkillsUSA chapters. The Model of Excellence program recognizes a chapter’s application of the SkillsUSA Framework of personal, workplace and technical skills grounded in academics. This is the second time in three years that BOCES 2 CTE has earned this top honor.

Earlier in the conference, BOCES 2 CTE SkillsUSA Lead Advisor and Dental Assisting

teacher Jennifer Probst was named New York State SkillsUSA Advisor of the Year for her dedication to the organization and students. Eleven BOCES 2 CTE students are eligible to participate in the national conference in June, along with Probst and additional professional members. Frisch, Hare and Svyrydyuk punched their tickets to Atlanta with their first-place finishes, as did the TeamWorks team. Due to the first-place finisher not being able to attend nationals, Lippa will represent New York in Collision Repair Technology. Williams will attend to partake in leadership activities while Berardicurti and Contrera will represent the chapter as it advances in the Model of Excellence competition.

Brockport HS announces Class of 2025 Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Brockport High School (BHS) seniors Isaac Allen and Nolan Munn have been named Class of 2025 Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively.

On May 23, Isaac and Nolan were pleasantly surprised when they were called down to the high school main office, where they were greeted by their parents, siblings, Principal Michael Pincelli, Superintendent Sean Bruno, and members of the BHS administration. The gathering marked a special moment of celebration as the students were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments.

Isaac has distinguished himself through a wide range of academic, extracurricular and community achievements. He served as a Student Researcher at the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics and is an active leader in his school community as President of the Student Council Class of 2025. Isaac is the President of the Monroe County Math League, Team Captain of both the NYS Science Olympiad and the New York Masterminds, and a dedicated athlete who played on both the JV and Varsity Tennis teams. Isaac has contributed significantly to his community through various service initiatives and as a student volunteer at the Seymour Library. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has received recognition as a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, the Western Monroe Historical Society Award, the Eric Martin Mathletes Award, and designation as an AP Scholar with Distinction.

After graduation, Isaac plans to attend Princeton University where he will major in Molecular Biology, a field that explores the dynamic intersection of biology and chemistry.

Nolan has demonstrated strong leadership and dedication throughout high school. He has been a member and Captain of the Varsity Cross Country team since ninth grade and currently serves as Captain of both the Varsity Indoor and Outdoor Track teams. He has also served as a Representative of his class on Student Council since freshman year and is a member of the National Honor Society and Captains Club.

Beyond athletics and academics, Nolan enjoys playing instruments, running, fishing, and has strong skills in math, science, and geography. After graduation, he plans to attend Cornell University to major in Engineering.

“It is an honor to recognize these two outstanding students. Their academic excellence is remarkable, but what sets them apart even more is their character, leadership, and the positive impact they’ve had on our school community. These accomplishments are just the beginning, and I’m confident they have bright futures ahead,” says BHS Principal, Michael Pincelli.

Both students are slated to speak during the Class of 2025 Commencement on Saturday, June 28, at SUNY Brockport’s SERC.

Grit and Gratitude: The Byron-Bergen Class of 2025 Commencement

On Friday, June 20, the Byron-Bergen Class of 2025 bid their high school days farewell and officially joined the ranks of esteemed alumni. With recurring themes of hard work and gratitude, Principal Paul Hazard and Superintendent Pat McGee both commended the graduates on their grinding work ethic and encouraged them to be thankful for the support and opportunities provided by their families and community. On the same themes, Valedictorian Jackson Lundfelt emboldened his classmates to be confident to the point of delusion and Salutatorian Rose Wilson inspired them to create a habit of gratitude. These sentiments were also echoed throughout the evening by the Singing Silhouettes and several award presenters.

Master of Ceremonies and College and Career Counselor Rob Kaercher opened the evening by introducing Jr./Sr. High School Principal Paul Hazard. Hazard addressed the almost 70 graduates and thanked them for their lessons to him, assuring them that their legacy is one of “a collective powerhouse that is destined for greatness.” Superintendent

McGee followed that sentiment by adding that he had seen these graduates show “maturity, determination, kindness, grit, humor, a little sass, a lot of heart, and a great work ethic among other amazing qualities.”

Salutatorian Rose Wilson then took to the stage reminding the graduates and audience that “gratitude is a skill you can develop just by noticing the small things that you can be grateful for, every day.” Wilson was followed by graduating Singing Silhouettes Deborah Catalino, Abigail Cook, Arianne McLaughlin, Roman Smith, and Jade Wolff who, fittingly, joined voices to perform ABBA’s classic hit, “Thank You for the Music.”

Valedictorian Jackson Lundfelt closed out the speeches for the evening by thanking his family and friends and sharing the philosophy of Yasheen Abdalla, an Olympic marathoner from Sudan. Lundfelt quoted her as saying, “You have to be so confident in yourself that people think you’re delusional.” In his own words, he added, “Whatever you do, no matter your next step, walk into it with confidence, even the kind that feels a little delusional at times. You are capable of whatever you set your mind to… Life isn’t about achieving a cookie cutter version of success, it is defined by each one of you in your own unique way.”

The ceremony drew to a close with the conferring of diplomas by Board of Education President Debra List. Each graduate strode, flipped, or selfied their way across the stage with confidence and gratitude. After the singing of the alma mater, the Class of 2025 departed from the Soccer Stadium to begin their next adventure.

Unique graduation gifts

Graduates have many things to look forward to this time of year, not the least of which are gifts from close friends and family. Those tasked with coming up with graduation gifts can take inspiration from these ideas that break the mold.

•Retirement account funds: Helping a new graduate get started is a popular sentiment among gift givers, but it’s also possible to give grads a leg up on the future. Helping them to fund an individual retirement account can be a thoughtful gift. Keep in mind that parameters for IRAs differ between a traditional and a Roth IRA, and it is best to speak with a financial advisor to determine the best fit. Starting a retirement account early on can provide solid footing for financial security later in life.

•Quality luggage: A good set of luggage can often last a person a lifetime if properly cared for. Whether the grad is taking a much-needed trip after graduation or will be traveling for his or her career, the luggage will serve well.

•Student loan interest payment: Many students must rely on federal or private loans to offset the costs of attending college or even trade schools. Although a loved one may not be able to pay off the loans in their entirety, a good gift can be to make payments toward the interest on the loans so that the bill is reduced come graduation.

•Roadside assistance service: The road may take graduates near and far. A membership to a roadside assistance service can be

a practical gift that ensures grads get from point A to point B with fewer hiccups. These services offer towing, tire changing, gas delivery, and more. Plus, they often come with additional perks, such as discounts on travel services and lodging.

•Professional course or tickets to a conference: Help support a graduate’s career growth and professional development with a subscription to a course, a book about their industry or tickets to a relevant conference or trade show.

•Travel: Grads can be treated to the gift of travel. An overseas adventure or an epic road trip across the country may be the perfect way to unwind after years of schooling. Graduates are entering an exciting time in their lives when anything is possible. Gift givers can think outside the box when shopping for their favorite cap-and-gown-donning loved ones.
