Sam Maloney is a 19 year old photographer from Greece. He has been taking photographs since he was ten years old.

Sam has autism, he had a rough start to his life. He didn’t speak until he was five years old. His mom, Debra Bellare, with the help of therapists, created a plan for Sam. Debra noticed early on that Sam had a talent for photography. “I realized that Sam could communicate through the camera lens. He has a unique take on his world and he sees it through the lens of his camera,” she said. Through photography, not only did Sam begin to speak freely, but he also learned to read. He used his camera as a learning tool.

Sam said he was in a dark place, “I felt that I had lost hope. I really didn’t have any friends. But my mom brought me back.” Debra said, “Many autistic people lose hope. Our goal is to make sure that people with autism don’t lose hope and that life can be brought back through creativity and fun, and that is how Sam found his hope.”

Debra sought out opportunities for Sam to have social experiences with his photography. Over the past few years Sam has had three solo shows of his photography, Example of Sam’s still life photography. at Starry Night Cafe, Lumiere Photo and at City Sense Roc. By showing his photography, Sam learned about organization, independence, responsibility and it gave him the opportunity to talk to and meet a wide variety of people. Most importantly Sam was able to communicate and interact with people, and tell the stories behind his photos.

Sam has also had the opportunity to work with Rochester Refugee Resettlement Services (RRRS). He took pictures of kids for their registry. RRRS service statement is, “Our mission is to make our new neighbors successful and happy here in Rochester as they add flavor to our community with their culture.” Through this experience Sam met many people from all over the world.

Sam also actively works in his Portrait Cares Program. He said, “Portrait Cares is a program that donates photographs to organizations with financial restrictions that are involved in community projects. I started the Portrait Cares Program because I believe in giving opportunities to those who feel that all the doors are closed. I have an understanding about financial hardships. All of my camera equipment has either been given to me or money was raised by fundraisers. I would not be where I am today without my community. Nick Kelsh, a photographer and mentor of mine, taught me to be kind with your camera. I live by that rule.”

In 2012 Sam was the cover story in Parent’s Magazine. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter saw the story and was moved to meet Sam. She invited him to be the photographer for her 2012 campaign. Sam was 12 years old. He said, “I really connected with her, she was so accepting. She invited me to Washington and set up a tour of the White House for me. I got to go to Michelle Obama’s garden. I really felt comfortable with her and she helped me a lot with making eye contact.”

Sam’s new endeavor is to help change negative perceptions of people like him. He feels too many autistic people grow up believing that they are not smart enough or good enough to work towards being a contributing member of society. Greece Soccer Team Delivers Cheer

On Wednesday, December 4, 2019, the U9 Greece Cobra Boys soccer team went on a search to deliver Christmas cheer. The team, coached by Bridget and Giuseppe Miceli assembled at Edna Tina Wilson Living Center in Greece, New York. The living center arranged to have the boys play Bingo with the senior residents for the evening activity. The boys brought their community pride and service with homemade cards, ornaments, and special Santa hats for the residents. The evening was enjoyed by both the Cobras team and the residents with smiles and laughs to see who could call BINGO first.

Kick the Sugar Habit

Sugar intake has drastically increased over generations. In the 1800s the average person consumed four pounds of sugar per year, in today’s society the average American consumes more than 100 pounds of sugar a year! It is not surprising that at the same time lifestyle type illnesses have increased exponentially.

In the 1800s .003% of people had diabetes. Today almost 15% of Americans have Diabetes and 1 out of 3 Americans are pre-diabetic! It is not hard to see the connection. A 2012 study by the University of California and Stanford University found that for every 150 calories consumed from sugar the person increases their risk of type 2 Diabetes by one percent. This is regardless of whatever healthy foods they ate!

Diabetes risk increases from products containing sugar to include candy, pastries and baked goods as well as alcohol. Refined carbs turn into sugar in the bloodstream. Having high levels of sugar in the blood stream causes stress on all the major organs as well as lowering metabolism. According the Neuroendocrinology research, the human body can only safely process 6 teaspoons of sugar per day (equivalent to one serving of raisin bran, a snickers bar or two bananas). It is clinically proven that too much sugar destroys the metabolism, impairs insulin response, stimulates our hunger hormones (ghrelin) and turns off the hormones that tell us we are full (leptin), in addition to increasing risks for diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and cancer. So why do we, as a culture, continue to eat more and more of it? Sugar is shown to have addictive qualities on the brain like illicit drugs do. Just as cocaine affects the dopamine levels of the brain, sugar can do the same thing and create addictive behaviors. Since sugar is socially acceptable it can easily grow into an addiction and never be recognized as a very unhealthy habit.

Kicking the sugar habit can not only improve you waistline but also improve you health!

Here are some tips to help you curb the sugar from your diet.

1. Keep sugary foods out of the house: Read labels and avoid processed foods with sugar added. Make your own healthy snacks using nuts and seeds and a small amount of dried fruit for a taste of sweetness.

2. Take L Glutamine (amino acid) L-Glutamine is an amino acid that assists with a multitude of mechanisms in the body. It acts as a source of fuel for the GI tract and helps regulate blood sugar levels as well as brain health (aka craving control).

3. Eat healthy fats. Healthy fats like avocado, olive oil and natural nuts/nut butters can help your heart, brain, joints, and just about every organ in your body, reduces inflammation and helps keep you feeling satisfied.

4. Drink water with lemon. Research shows that lemon in drinking water helps keep blood sugars level. The extra water helps your hydration and can reduce cravings that are commonly caused by dehydration.

5. Use natural alternatives like Stevia or Monks fruit.

6. Exercise! This is the best solution to helping keep your blood sugar stable, increase hormones to elevate your mood as well as pick up your energy levels and burn calories. Weight training and light cardio can really help you overcome your sugar habit and get your mind and body healthier!

The Landmark Society Announces 2019 Preservation Awards

The Landmark Society of Western New York recently announced the 2019 Preservation Awards in a ceremony at Rochester City Hall. The awards are given to individuals and organizations in the organizations’s nine-county area that have made outstanding efforts in the preservation of their homes, public buildings, historic properties, and landscapes.

Included in the awards was a Special Achievement Award which recognizes accomplishments that have occurred over a lengthy period of time. A Special Achievement Award was given to the study Thematic Inventory: The Architecture of James H. Johnson.

This is a landmark study of Rochester’s iconic, late-20th century architect James H. Johnson’s catalogues and his decades-long career. Sponsored by the Greece Historical Society, this project was completed by preservation consultant Gina DiBella, and Bero Architecture PLLC staff, Katie Eggers Comeau and Christopher Brandt, with funding from the Preservation League of New York State, The Landmark Society of Western New York, the Greece Historical Society, and the family of James H. Johnson.

Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Greece Historical Society has been an important preservation advocate in the town.

Its major preservation projects include the establishment of a Town Preservation Commission, a Historic Resources Inventory of the town’s 101 most significant properties, and the recently completed “Thematic Inventory of the Architecture of James H. Johnson,” its most ambitious project, to date. In 1988, the Society acquired its present headquarters, the former Larkin-BeattieHowe House, which was moved to the Town Hall campus where

a museum exhibit hall was later added.

Greece Athena Donates Portion of Cinderella Proceeds to Golisano Children’s Hospital Student actors delivered a $1,000 donation and gift baskets to patients during their uplifting visit to Golisano Children’s Hospital on Monday, December 30th. During the visit, Dominique D’Amico (Cinderella), Jessica D’Amico (Fairy Godmother) and Coty Perno (Topher) delivered tiaras, magic wands, games and toys in hopes of lifting the spirits of children who may need to feel transported to a place where wishes really do come true. Among the gifts were tickets to the show, providing families impacted by illness with an escape to a world filled with hope and positivity.

“Greece Athena High School Music Theatre has donated to other organizations over the years and with this family friendly, magical show the students were naturally drawn to helping children and their families. The show allows children and their families to see that magic and miracles can be possible,” said musical director, Kathryn Dyer.

Eagle Scout Recognition Award

On December 17, 2019 an official Eagle Scout Award Ceremony was held during the Greece Town Board Meeting. The Town of Greece Eagle Scout Recognition Medal is presented to all Boy Scouts who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in their local troop.

A proclamation and medal was awarded to Nicholas Tammaro who recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop Number 197. For his Eagle Scout Project, Nicholas chose to help modernize John Knox Presbyterian Church in the Town of Greece by painting sections of the interior. He organized and directed a group of volunteers in order to complete this project. Throughout the project, Nicholas enhanced his skills in leadership, responsibility, and creativity.

During the presentation ceremony Greece Eagle Scout Nicholas Tammaro, with his proclamation and medal, is pictured with members of Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said, “Thank the Greece Town Board. you for your efforts towards a project that will be enjoyed and appreciated by both visitors and regular at- courage, and patriotism among young men. The Eagle Scout tendees of John Knox Presbyterian Church.”

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich I hope everyone is staying safe and warm as we battle through another Western New York winter season. I would like to remind residents to allow for extra travel time during their commute and to be mindful of weather warnings. As you may know, there is no parking on all town roads from November 1st to April 15th between midnight and 8:00AM. This allows for safer and more effective plowing and salting of dedicated town streets and helps keep the cost of snow removal down. The Department of Public Works is currently operating on its winter-shift schedule of 24-hours/day, 7-days/week. Residents may call the Dispatch Office at (585) 2254590 regarding our plowing operations or in the event of an emergency regarding town roads, street lights, sewers and for any other DPW related issues. You may also check the Town website www. greeceny.gov for additional information. Thank you all for your assistance as we work together to get through another winter season here in the Town of Greece. Please know that I will continue to make sure we provide our high level of service for our residents and that we will continue to have the best plowed roads in Monroe County!

The New Year has seen the opening of several new businesses in Greece. The Greece Town Council Members and I recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for Jose Joe’s. The Town of Greece is now home to the second family-owned restaurant location in all of Monroe County. We wish owners Thomas Ban, Anna Maria Ban, and Robert Buono great success in their new location at 2570 Ridgeway Avenue! Defensive Driving Course 2020 Town-Sponsored DMV-Approved Defensive Driving Course Registration Now Available to Greece Residents Town-sponsored DMV-approved Defensive Driving Courses have been scheduled for January, 2020 thru June, 2020. Every course will be held in two separate session (6:00pm – 9:00pm) on weeknights. You must attend both sessions in order to complete the course.

Greece Residents who are interested in attending Defensive Driving Courses may sign up via the Town of Greece website. 18th Annual Greece Invitational Bowling Tournament Results On Monday, December 23, 2019, the 18th Annual Greece Invitational High School Bowling Tournament was held at Dewey Garden Lanes. The tournament consisted of both boys and girls divisions, a team event, and a single elimination tournament, with over 128 bowlers participating. The team format used the best five individual games of a school’s bowlers.

The three-game series resulted in Webster Schroeder winning overall for boys with 3074 total pinfall, followed by Spencerport with 2961, and Hilton with 2883. The girls overall winner was Hilton with 2579 in total pinfall, followed by Greece Arcadia with 2454, and Greece Athena with 2426. Other schools participating included Gates Chili, Irondequoit, Greece Olympia, and Greece Odyssey.

Greece Resident Publishes Two New Books Greece resident John Newton has recently published two new books.

Wilderness Nation is a novel of a young frontiersman and Lakota maiden who marry and establish a trading post in the northwest Louisiana Territory during the mid-1800s. “It’s about dealing with their very real feelings of love and hate, strength and fear, joy and sadness as they face numerous challenges in bridging the gap between two seemingly incompatible cultures,” Newton said. The story further deals with a unique village of Native Americans who face the influx of the white man and enemy tribes as they strive to hold onto deeplyheld beliefs that have guided their way of life for untold generations.

The Addison Collection contains thoughts and sayings, observations, and short stories. One story describes a teenage boy’s thoughts and feelings as a first-time successful deer hunter. Another deals with the arrival of a spaceship of aliens who offer their perspective on the phenomenon of time and the importance of contemporary life on Earth. A treatises on the United States suggests the values and character of American culture can serve as a forerunner to how the world of the future will be structured.

The Wood Brothers Band, brothers Oliver and Chris Wood and percussionist and multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix play an 8:00PM show at the Kodak Center, 200 West Ridge Road, on February 5, 2020.

Brothers Oliver and Chris Wood had their start in Boulder, Colorado in a musical family. Their father Bill Wood, who is a biologist by trade, was a folk musician in his younger years. “Our father was serious about his music as a young man. He had some success as a folkie and played with many folk groups including musician Joan Baez. He was always playing music, we kind of took it for granted as kids. Chris and I were both influenced by him, he knew hundreds of songs and had an extensive record collection,” Oliver Wood said. As teenagers the brothers played music together while growing up.

There is a four year difference in age between Oliver and Chris, with Oliver being the elder. As young men, when they left home, Oliver went south to Atlanta and Chris went north to New York. They both pursued musical careers. Early on Oliver joined the Tinsley Ellis band and later formed the King Johnson band, a mix of blues, country, funk and R&B. Chris studied jazz bass and formed Medeski Martin & Wood band, a centerpiece of contemporary avant-jazz sounds. For over 15 years both brothers achieved success on their own.

“Over the years we grew apart, separated by the miles. There was a disconnect,” Oliver said. After more than a decade of separation where the brothers honed their individual skills, they were brought back together in North Carolina when Oliver’s King Johnson band opened for Chris’ Medeski Martin & Wood band. Oliver was invited onstage to play a couple of songs with Chris’ band.

“It felt so connected on stage. It brought us back together like when we were kids growing up. We reconnected musically and as brothers. It opened our eyes to the idea of playing together again. It was a very unforgettable experience,” Oliver said.

In 2005 the Wood Brothers started putting it together as a duo. “It was undeniable, the musical chemistry was there. We are genuinely connected and it was immediate, in a way it was supernatural and a real rush,” Oliver said. They both had grown

musically. At the start Oliver was the lyricist and Chris the instrumentalist, over the years they worked together on crafting the songs. Their mother, who passed 10 years ago, was a poet.

“Our mother had a talent for writing. Growing up we kind of took that for granted,” Oliver said. Her poetic influence is evident in their song lyrics, poetry in motion. Since 2006 The Wood Brothers have released seven studio albums and four live albums, with their 2018 release One Drop of Truth receiving the band’s first GRAMMY Award nomination for Best Americana Album.

On January 24, 2020, the Wood Brothers will release Kingdom In My Mind, their new studio album which is described on their website as, “An 11-song collection representing a reckoning of sorts, examining circumstance, mortality and human nature.

Finding strength in accepting what lies beyond our control, the material on ‘Kingdom In My Mind’ hones in on the bittersweet beauty that underlies doubt and pain and sadness with vivid character studies and unflinching self-examination. While the lyrics dig deep, the trio draws from across a broad sonic spectrum to create a set of songs that although thoughtful and inward looking is ultimately transportive and effervescent.”

The Wood Brothers’ approach to recording Kingdom In My Mind is unique in that it is the first album where they worked in the studio and improvised as they worked through the songs.

“We worked on the songs together. It was like children at play.

When you improvise you play it a different way, it’s your first impression. You capture the moment, mistakes and all, and musically it works. Most inspiration comes when you are alone. We keep our ideas in notebooks and on a computer which is full of parts of songs. We bring our ideas and share and build on it together. Early on musicians had only one chance to record the song, that is our favorite part of improvised music. One chance brings in the human element where mistakes happen, the mistakes are the magic,” Oliver said.

Kingdom In My Mind is the first album where the Wood Brothers used their third member Jano Rix to the fullest extent of his talents. “Chris and I started out as a duo. We were folkie, acoustic and stripped down. As we grew our audience we decided to grow our music. In 2011 we hired Jano Rix as our drummer. Adding him has been amazing. He is like our third brother. He is not

only a skilled drummer but a great piano player and singer. He adds beautiful harmonies to our sound,” Oliver said.

“At the same time we were making this album, we were looking for some sort of philanthropic organization we could support with our music and in a bit of synchronicity, we came across this great group called Thistle Farms, which was based just down the street from our studio. Their goal is to help women who have been victims of sex trafficking or prostitution or addiction to get off the street and into safe housing where they can participate in therapy and job training. The work they were doing was so inspiring and it felt like such a fit with the kind of album we were writing that we teamed up with them to donate a portion of ticket sales from all our shows. It’s our way of using what we’ve got to do whatever good we can in the world.” Oliver said.

The brothers have both recently relocated to Nashville. “Chris was in New York in the Hudson Valley and I was in Atlanta, Jano was already in Nashville. We were looking for a place to come together and Nashville was a natural choice. We have our own studio here which is new for us. We now have the luxury to take our time with recording because we aren’t dealing with studio charges. It is very freeing, and we have our recording engineer Brook Sutton, who is very talented. It is great to be in Nashville,” Oliver said.

For their February 5th show in Rochester Oliver Wood said, “We love to play in Rochester. We will certainly feature our new songs. We also love to bring back our old songs. We have way too many songs, it’s hard to choose so we rotate songs out for our shows and play as many as we can in the time we have.”
