17th Annual Greece Invitational High School Bowling Tournament On Thursday, December 27, 2018 the 17th Annual Greece Invitational High School Bowling Tournament was held at Dewey Garden Lanes. The tournament consisted of both a boys’ and a girls’ division, a team event, and a single elimination tournament, with over 110 bowlers participating.

The team format used the best five individual games of a school’s bowlers. The three-game series resulted in Hilton winning overall for boys with 3451 total pinfall, followed by Greece Arcadia with 3350, and Greece Athena with 3191. The girls’ overall winner was Hilton with 3070 in total pinfall, followed by Greece Athena with 2752, and Spencerport with 2585. Other schools participating included Webster Schroeder, Irondequoit, Greece Olympia, and Greece Odyssey.

Team competition was followed by a head-to-head singles competition, determined by the eight highest individual series for each school and the next eight overall high series from any school. Bowlers were seeded from 1 to 16, and a match play format ensued. The boys’ winner was Irondequoit’s Fabian Rivera with a 213 to 172 win over Athena’s Ryan Phillips. The girls’ winner was Hilton’s Elena Carr with a 213 to 203 win over Haley Grabowski from Greece Athena. Hilton’s Jake Oriel set a new tournament single game record with a perfect 300 game.

AARP Tax-Aide offers tax return preparation service for seniors

Many seniors find the tax preparation process daunting because of the expense and the complexity of the frequently changing IRS laws. It is especially difficult if there have been significant life changes like retirement or the death of a spouse.

AARP Tax-Aide has helped millions of low to moderate income senior taxpayers by offering free, in-person tax return preparation service. Seniors are guided on what paperwork to bring and what to expect at their appointment.

Taking the stress and fear out of the tax return preparation process is the goal. IRS-certified volunteers will file senior returns electronically after thoroughly explaining how they arrived at the final results.

AARP membership is not required to receive this assistance. All appointments are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. The service is available in the following locations: Greece - Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. from February 5 through April 11 at Greece Baptist Church, 1230 Long Pond Road, Rochester. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 585-764-8863 Tuesdays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. beginning January 8.

17th Annual Snow Ball Golf The Greece Ridge Lions Club announced their 17th Annual Snow Ball Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019.

FIRST® Robotics 2019 Challenge Kickoff

The 2019 FIRST® Robotics Kickoff event was held on January 5, 2019 at Spencerport High School. Greece Gladiators Team 1591 was among the more than 800 students and mentors from 35 area teams who attended this important beginning of the FIRST® season for 2019.

FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, New Hampshire, the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.

The 2019 FIRST® Robotics kick-off event occurred simultaneously around the world so that all teams received the FIRST® game challenge for the season at the same time. At 10:30 a.m., a video was shown unveiling the challenge, and the season began with a rookie build occurring at Spencerport High School.

The challenge this year is called Deep Space. Teams will race to complete a rocket by placing hatch covers and cargo. They also can place hatch cover and cargo on their car-

Greece Gladiators Team 1591 consists of over 34 students from the four area Greece High Schools and two high school technology teachers from the Greece School District. The program offers a place for students interested in engineering, computer programming, computer aided drawing (design), hands-on mechanical work, marketing and promotions and leadership roles.

Albert Paley

by Barbara Burke American Modernist Metal Sculptor Albert Paley’s artistry began as a jewelry designer. He was educated at Tyler School of Art, an art and architecture school based at Temple University, a large, urban, public research university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Paley was born in Philadelphia. He moved to Rochester in 1969 to teach at Rochester Institute of Technology School of American Crafts, where he still holds a distinguished professorship. He also served on the faculty of SUNY College at Brockport.

Paley is the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Architects, the AIA’s highest award to a non-architect.

Paley’s designs are rooted in an extensive understanding of design aesthetics and history, with influences of rococo and art nouveau. He says, “My involvement with aesthetics has gone through various phases over the years. In this evolution the constant has always been my focus on personal awareness and perception. My investigation in form development centers on the exploration of material characteristics, related processes and technologies. In creating a work of art, besides my personal experience, my concern is how it emotionally and intellectually engages the viewer. Through the creative process I have developed a personal visual vocabulary fundamentally based in symbolism and metaphor which is implicit in my work.”

His work includes large scale architectural projects, gates, public sculpture, landscape sculpture, glass and steel sculpture, small scale sculpture, furniture, works on paper and

currently a new endeavor designs for hand knotted carpet. Albert Paley has over 50 site specific works worldwide, his artistic career spans a period of over 50 years.

Paley’s breakthrough came in 1972 when he was commissioned by the Smithsonian to design the portal gates for the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. His first major public sculpture was for the Strong Museum in 1982 which showed his transition from smaller-scale to monumental size in sculpture. This was also a time when he went to complexity in form and color. In summer of 2013, thirteen sculptures were installed for an exhibition on Park Avenue in NYC between 52nd and 67th Streets.

When asked about how individuals should view his art Paley said, “I would never tell anyone how to approach the viewing of my art just like I would never tell someone how to listen to music, it is all art. Whatever an individual brings to the experience is their own sense of the piece. It comes from their past experiences. I am giving the information and the viewer puts it into their own context. It is however they see it. It is not literal, to understand art is to view it within the environment and to sense the energy and to bring personal experiences to appreciate a piece with your own senses.”

Within each of his works three foundational elements stay true: the natural environment, the built environment, and the human presence.

In 2017 Paley collaborated with Jesse James of West Coast Choppers to make two sculptures, each artist started one sculpture and shipped it to the other to finish. The collaboration was highlighted in an hour-long documentary “Dialogue in Metal.” A screening of the

documentary was held at the Little Theatre and was followed by a Question and Answer session with both Paley and James. The documentary also aired in November 2018 on PBS WXXI. About the experience Paley said, “I originally thought Jesse was going to ask me to do a design for one of his motorcycles, when he told me his idea I thought it would be a unique opportunity, something that was a challenge because we have both common and uncommon ground in our art.” After being on display, the sculptures will be sold and proceeds will go to scholarships to help people in the trades such as machinists and welders.

A Visit to the Lyell Avenue Paley Studio Early in 2020, when Paley’s lease expires on his Lyell Avenue studio, his largest at 40,000 square feet, he will be downsizing his operation. The goal in downsizing is to reassess how he wants to move forward with his art and focus more on intimacy in his work. His Lyell Avenue studio is where large scale fabrication of site specific works occurs.

His future plans include focusing energy on more one-ofa-kind pieces, estate planning and legacy planning. He also has a large archive and is working out plans to place it in an institution for educational purposes.

The first floor is the fabrication area, a towering, well organized studio, where large scale sculptures are made. The studio is divided into fabrication area, raw materials area, a wood working shop where containers are made in house for shipping works of art, a tool and die section and completed works area.

The second floor of the studio houses the offices, gallery and archive of Paley’s work.

Throughout the gallery are completed works, small scale models fabricated in cardboard, an approach Paley uses in his design process, framed drawings from his earliest works, completed works in glass and metal, a room of works on paper, design drawings, examples of his latest artistic endeavor - designs for hand knotted wool area rugs, and an extensive archive containing over 50 years of his history including records, documents and files.

Greece Rotary Ziti Dinner The Greece Rotary Club will hold its 42nd Annual Ziti Dinner on Sunday, January 27, 2019 from 11:30AM-4:30PM. The popular pasta event, held at the Diplomat Party House on Lyell Avenue, serves close to 2,000 dinners during the five hour event. It is the Greece Club’s largest special event, raising nearly $40,000.

Monies raised are used to support a multitude of local organizations in and around Greece, including scholarships at local high schools, support for Villa of Hope programs, and Greece Challenger Little League.

The Club relies on its members for volunteer help on the day of the event and this year will also welcome the participation of the Greece High School Interact Clubs. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children five and under. Tickets are available from all Greece Rotary members and Interact members, as well as at the door. An additional $1.00 charge for takeout orders will be collected at the door.

Memorial Fund Established in Memory of Daniel E. Richardson In January 2018 one of Greece’s great community champions passed away. Daniel E. Richardson, owner of Braddock Bay Tavern & Grill, had been a very active, long-standing business member and former leader of the Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Greece Rotary Club, the Boy Scouts, and the Greece Chamber Charitable Foundation Board of Directors, where he played a pivotal role in shaping and creating initiatives to support business training and mentorship experiences for young people.

In addition to his considerable involvement and support of the local community, Dan also supported international charitable causes, using – as just two examples – his pilot’s license and small plane to fly to Haiti and provide humanitarian aid and to transport donated organs to various hospitals for urgently needed recipient transplants.

Dan was one of those rare individuals who is not afraid to innovate, to try new things, and who coupled his business acumen and business success with generosity and a strong commitment to his community.

In his memory, and to create a legacy, the Daniel E. Richardson Memorial Fund was established under the umbrella of the Greece Chamber Charitable Foundation. Overseen by the Foundation Board of Directors and guided by a Fund Committee comprised of business and community volunteers including Dan’s widow, Carol Richardson. The Daniel E. Richardson Memorial Fund will support business training, education, and youth development in the Town of Greece and surrounding area.

To date over $4,000 in donations have been received from a number of generous community residents and leaders. The Greece Chamber of Commerce wishes to thank each of them for their kindness and philanthropic support.

E-ZPasses Now Available at Town Clerk’s Office A new service is now available for Town of Greece residents, residents may now obtain E-ZPasses from the Town of Greece Clerk’s Office.

E-ZPass is a program whereby a customer pre-pays funds, receives a transponder (tag) to mount on their vehicle, and as the vehicle passes through a toll plaza, an antenna in the lane “reads” that tag’s computerized information and the appropriate toll is deducted from the pre-paid funds. The benefit of an E-ZPass is that it expedites transactions at the toll plaza, thereby reducing congestion. Please note that tags sold are only for personal use two-axel cars, trucks, and vans. The tags are not for business or commercial use.

E-ZPasses may be purchased from the Greece Town Clerk’s Office during regular business hours for $25. Once you purchase an E-ZPass, you may register the tag by visiting www.ezpassNY.com/register or by calling 1-800-697-1554.When you register your tag, you will be prompted to select one of two

Town of Greece Presents Proclamations and Medals Two recognition ceremonies were held during the December 18, 2018 Greece Town Board meeting.

Karlee Auld, who has achieved the significant status of Gold Award in the Greece Girl Scout Troop, was presented and award.

Very few complete all of the requirements needed to achieve this status, as it involves a great deal of planning and effort towards a community project. Karlee received the Gold Award for her efforts towards a project to create care packages to send to troops overseas and to also educate elementary children on the jobs that soldiers perform. In order to complete the project, Karlee spent several weeks visiting a 5th grade classroom and educating the children on the different jobs that soldiers perform.

The students were also involved in writing letters and donating an item for the care packages. Karlee then reached out to different community organizations for care package donations and worked with friends, relatives, and co-workers to complete the care packages. Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said, “I would like to congratulate Karlee on completing this project. The Town of Greece is proud of all you have accomplished!”

A proclamation and medal was also presented to Bailey Sykes, who recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop #195.

Monroe County Pedestrian Safety Action Plan The safety of communities is one of Monroe County’s top priorities. Many residents in Monroe County enjoy walking to school, biking on paths, and walking trails that pass through busy intersections. It is important that pedestrians are safe when they need to use a crosswalk. Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo recently announced new funding for a project that will increase walkability and improve safety at over 400 crosswalks throughout Monroe County.

At the October meeting of the Monroe County Legislature members voted in favor of the Monroe County Pedestrian Safety Action Plan. This $1.17 million plan includes safety upgrades to hundreds of existing crosswalks throughout Monroe County including converting crosswalks to high visibility crosswalks, adding leading pedestrian interval changes to allow pedestrians to cross before vehicles begin to move, upgrading and double posting over 300 pedestrian crossing signs to high visibility, install-

ing reflective strips on sign posts, and installing rapid rectangular flashing beacons at high pedestrian volume locations. This project is scheduled to begin late in 2019 and construction will be completed by the end of 2020.

As twins, they have continued to develop their unique bond through their dancing, singing, playing soccer and performing together in numerous Middle and High School musicals for the past ten years. Their love for dancing was furthered when the girls talked their dad into Daddy/Daughter dance classes in 2012.

Today the girls are juniors, on High Honor Roll with Distinction.

Both have enjoyed singing with the RPO and have volunteered with Artists Unlimited for the last three years. They enjoy performing in the Show Choir and competed with Select Choir the last two years.

Domenique plans to pursue Musical Theater in college and

Jessica is planning on studying Business/Marketing in college, but would love to continue singing in choirs and performing in musicals for fun.

Greece Author Releases New Book Little did 92-year-old Dorothy Payne realize that, when she recently moved into the Villages at Unity in Greece, NY, she would be murdered…in a book, that is.

Joe Janowicz, Greece resident and writer of the graphic novel comic BLACK MAN WHITE MAN, used her as a main character in his new murder mystery novel, BANGBANG YOU’RE DEAD. Joe is the son-in-law of Dorothy, and he always promised her that he would one day make her a “star,” and so she is, even though she gets murdered in the very first chapter of his new book. “That first chapter, which involves her, sets the tone for everything that follows. It is a very important scene with some very important clues to the identity of the killer,” Joe said with a bit of a smile. “I do bring her back to life in a flashback later in the story, like having her come out for a final curtain bow before the story ends.”

As for the story, BANG-BANG YOU’RE DEAD centers on a series of mysterious murders in the fictitious Sunny Side Up Retirement Home. Each chapter tells a fascinating life story of an individual resident, with the killer then deciding to spare or end the person’s life. “My mother-in-law has always shared so many stories of her past that it made me think about how many stories we never heard about from our family, loved ones, and friends, and how those stories may have impacted or affected other people’s lives. Once she moved into her new home, I got the idea of blending personal stories like hers inside a place similar to where she now lives.

Her move here was the catalyst for writing the story.”

As for supporting characters, Joe talked to some of the people he met when visiting her and they became other leading characters in his book. “I changed their continued on page 27

continued from page 26 names and altered their stories somewhat to protect the innocent,” Joe said laughingly. “Let’s just say it will be an interesting read as the story unfolds with the secrets behind the murders being related to their individual and collective past.”

Elly Stevens, a Kendall, NY, resident and a former editor for Kodak in their publications group, did the final edit of the book.

Megan J. Parker, a local Honeoye Falls resident, was the designer of the book. Megan is also the author of several novels, including Scarlet Night.

Dorothy has always been a lifelong reader of books. Her favorite ones are the Reader’s Digest Condensed Books, and, of course, romance novels, and sometimes a murder mystery sprinkled in between. Dorothy was given the honor to be the first to read the finished first chapter with her in it.

Her reaction, as Joe hoped for, was she couldn’t wait to read the rest of the story and learn who killed her and why. She also thanked him with a smile for making her “a star.”

As to the secret identity of the murderer, perhaps it’s a neighbor, perhaps a family member, perhaps someone who just passed through her life in one of her many stories. Bang-Bang You’re Dead is available at Amazon online and in Barnes and Noble bookstores.

As I look back on this past year, I am grateful to all the residents of this town who help to make Greece a wonderful place to live.

I hope everyone had a very safe and happy holiday season!

This past month, hundreds of residents braved the cold weather to join us for the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony and Family Christmas Party. We were treated to a fantastic performance by the U of R Yellowjackets, followed by a visit from Santa! An explosion of colors lit the night sky as the Greece Town Board members and I held the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Following the Tree Lighting, residents gathered in the Community Center for the Family Christmas Party. Activities included face painting, a giant inflatable snow-globe, games, Rockin’ Rick DJ, crafts, free coffee from Starbucks, cotton candy, and hot chocolate! The Library Book Mobile Cart was also there, and the library staff helped to distribute 500 free books to kids! For those who wanted to continue braving the cold weather, a marshmallow roasting station was set up outside. Thank you to all who joined us for this festive holiday event.

I would like to thank each and every person who participated in the Town of Greece Giving Tree Project this past year. This project provided an opportunity for community members to help families in need during the holiday season by donating winter apparel. At the conclusion of the project, the donated items were given to Mission Share Outreach Center of Greece, NY. I was humbled and inspired to witness community members selflessly give this holiday season to bring the spirit of Christmas to those in need. This is truly a caring community and the ways in which our community comes together to support one another makes me very thankful to live in this town.

During the December Greece Town Board Meeting, I had the privilege of presenting proclamations and medals to two individuals who have made an impact on our community. I would like to congratulate Karlee Auld for her achievement of Gold Award in the Greece Girl Scout Troop. Very few complete all of the requirements needed to achieve this status, as it involves a great deal of planning and effort towards a community project.

Karlee received the Gold Award for her efforts towards a project to create care packages to send to troops overseas and to also educate elementary children on the jobs that soldiers perform.

I would also like to congratulate Bailey Sykes on achieving Eagle Scout ranking in Troop #195. In order to attain Eagle Scout, Bailey installed three cedar benches in the Natural Burial section of Ascension Garden Cemetery. The Town of Greece is very proud of these two fine individuals!

Four Tips to Help Make Your New Year Resolutions a Reality

The New Year symbolizes a new chapter in our life. Often we use the New Year as a great time to refocus on our health and set goals to help create a healthier new year.

Sadly only 12% of people are able to stick to their new aspirations to lead a healthier lifestyle. Below are some tips to help keep you on track with your resolutions.

Plan - The best resolutions are those that actually include a plan of action. Create a plan that will help you reach your specific goals. Start by breaking your goal down into smaller weekly goals so you can feel and visualize the success of your small achievements. Example: set a goal of going to the gym 3 times per week to workout. Set the plan into your calendar and mark it off after each workout. If eating healthier is your goal, plan your meals and be sure to meal prep to have healthy meals on hand. Otherwise eating unhealthy foods becomes too easy. “Those who fail to plan, plan to fail!”

Don’t go it alone - Whether its eating healthier, taking an exercise class, or working out in a gym you will have a higher success rate when you have a buddy to be accountable to. Enlist a friend who has similar goals to motivate one another and be a positive source to each other. Not only will you have the added accountability but it also helps make the process more fun. The more fun you have the more enjoyable getting healthier can be. If you see these new behaviors as a chore it will be harder to keep going when the motivation wanes. The best resolutions are ones that you feel good about when doing the work to reach them.

Track your progress - Keep track of each small success.

Short term goals are quicker to meet and will help you feel accomplished. Use an app to help you log your journey towards your goals. Many fitness apps are free and can help you log your diet, water intake, calories, exercise, and weight. Tracking it and seeing it helps keep you focused and motivated.

Slow and Steady - Slow and steady might not sound as exciting as a quick fix but it is a lot more effective. Small changes stick better long term. If you have a lot of bad eating habits overhauling your diet completely might leave you feeling frustrated and “hangry.” Make small changes like removing an unhealthy choice and replacing with healthier less processed food. Then the following week make a few more changes like increasing your protein and water intake.

Stick to it - Experts say that it takes 21 days for a new behavior to become a habit and six months for it to become part of your personality. Changes do not happen overnight. It takes persistence dedication and patience. Even if you slide a little get right back to it. Don’t beat yourself up or obsess on the slip up. Instead, recommit yourself for 24 hours. You can do anything for 24 hours. Keep committing to 24 hour increments and soon days will turn to weeks.
