Those who enjoy the fine arts and crafts our area has to offer won’t want to miss this year’s Spencerport Canal Days. Over 70 artisans will set up their wares during the two-day event with items that include fiber art, candles, glass and wine glasses, artistic face painting, small furniture, kitchen craft items, jewelry, Americana apparel (original designs) and much more. And for those who prefer to bring home something consumable - maple products, honey products, pies and sauces, all of which make great gifts, will be available.

“Many of our crafters have participated for years, and many are new – coming to us on the recommendation of other crafters,” said Nora Hampton, who is organizing the craft show for the third year. “It’s always a good feeling when your vendors recommend you to other crafters because this is a good, well run event.”

Carol Brownyard has been participating in Spencerport Canal Days for at least 15 years.

“From the onset we just loved the village and all those involved with the show,” she said.

“It’s strange how I first came to participate. I received an application in the mail and don’t know how they got my name. But after some urging from friends and family, I filled it out and the rest is history.”

Brownyard’s biggest sellers are doll clothes, tooth fairy pillows and pot holders. She got started by making doll clothes for her daughter and daughter’s friends, along with gifts and was told that she should think about selling them.

With that Brownyard has many repeat customers. “I take a lot of pride in my work,” she said. “I have been asked to teach classes and receive compliments even from shoppers who tell me they wish they had someone to buy for.”

Car Show benefits local veterans Car enthusiasts from all around flock to the Spencerport Canal Days Car Show to see hundreds of the area’s best cars and to visit with their owners who have made their vehicles a labor of love. In its 28th year, this year’s show takes place Saturday, July 28 at the Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post 330 at 691 Trimmer Road. Shuttle buses will run from Spencerport High School from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is from 9 a.m. to 12 noon with a fee of $15 after July 24 and no refunds. The first 200 registrants receive a dash plaque and there are plenty of door prizes. Awards are presented at 3 p.m.

As in past years, breakfast is available from 8 to 11 a.m. inside the American Legion.

Barton’s Parkside Hots and Lugia’s Ice Cream will be on hand for lunch beginning at 11 a.m. until the end of the show.

Cars, which generally range from the early 1900s through the present, are judged by a panel using a point system based on criteria such as cleanliness, paint and engine condition. A Best of Show, the top 50 and 18 specialty trophies are awarded.

John Krywy, who has been helping out with the car show for the past 15 years and chairing it for the past five, said he became involved after retiring from Kodak. “Having a passion for show cars, this was something I enjoyed,” he said. He is assisted by Car Show

Committee members Bill and Lori Faul, Ken Geil, Patrick Hotchkiss, Marty Pinto, and Photographer Ray Kuntz.

Krywy said that the Committee is lucky to be working with the American Legion.

“We have enjoyed the facilities at the Legion and working with them has been a joy. They maintain a manicured lawn, a covered pavilion, a building where they offer a breakfast the morning of the show at a nominal cost, and storage space for signage, etc. We also have our Committee meetings at their facilities,” he said.

After last year’s car show, donations were made to both the Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post 330 and the Spencerport Eagle Star Housing, which provides veterans with transitional housing, meals and life skills training for two to three months.

Come to the party at the 37th Annual Spencerport Canal Days No matter what your music preference, this year’s Spencerport Canal Days has you covered.

Dori Swarthout, a music teacher at Bernabi Elementary School in Spencerport and owner of Dori’s Music Studio, tapped into her connections as a musician herself for a great line up over the two-day festival. In fact, this year’s lineup features nine new bands and 15 groups total.

On Saturday, July 28, students from Dori’s Music Studio will start things off on the Main Stage from 10 to 11 a.m. They are followed by The Brick Band from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The band performs a variety of music from the 50s to the present, traveling Western New York. From 1:30 to 3 p.m., Travis Prinzi Band will play a unique blend of 70’s era rock, folk-rock, and a handful of Irish fiddle tunes that always “wow” an audience. Closing out the entertainment for Saturday is Off the Record from 3:30 to 5 p.m., a Rochester-based band that plays a variety of popular music from Classic Rock to Blues and Country Rock to Contemporary.

Also on Saturday at the Firemen’s Field, the Spencerport Community Chorus will serenade their audience from 10 to 11 a.m. From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the Ann Mitchell Jazz Trio will showcase the timeless classics of the 1930s to 1950s Jazz era with unbeatable energy and heart. Most recent appearances include: Corning Wine and Jazz Festival, New York State Fair, Rochester Strong Museum’s Making American Music series, Canandaigua Waterfront Festival, Jazz 901: LIVE On Air Concerts, Good Day Rochester and the KeyBank Rochester Fringe Festival. Vocalist Ann Mitchell takes the stage with guitarist, Ralph DeBergalis and bassist, Sheldon Tripi.

Switching gears from 1 to 2:30 p.m. is Exit 24, a band that crosses through many decades and styles of fun, funky, classic, hard driving music that keeps you moving and grooving. You’ll hear influences from Chicago; Earth, Wind and Fire; Michael Jackson; Blondie; Pat Benatar; Chaka Khan; just to name a few.

Last, but not least on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. is Rock Steady, a five-piece Classic Rock Band performing the music of some of the best loved bands of the 70s and 80s. The band is made up

of seasoned musicians from well-known New York bands like Belfast, Rainline, China White, Riff Raff, Bonfest and Welcome to My Nightmare.

On Sunday, the Spencerport Vocal Jazz Ensemble will take to the Main Stage from 10 to 11 a.m. Under the direction of Laura Mance, this audition-based ensemble is made up of students in grades 9 through 12 performing music ranging from traditional vocal jazz to contemporary a capella. The group travels annually to various cities around the country to compete in many adjudicated festivals, such as the Heritage Festivals, as well as the Berklee School of Music High School Jazz Festival in Boston, Massachusetts, and will be performing at Canal Days for the first time.

Another student group, the Spencerport High School Jazz Ensemble, performs from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Under the direction of John Viavattine, this award-winning band has performed with such notable artists as Bill Evans, Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, Eric Marienthal, Wayne Bergeron, Tom “Bones” Malone, Denis DiBlasio and Randy Brecker to name a few. This year the band is excited to announce an upcoming CD release.

Also on the Main Stage from 1 to 2:30 p.m. is Jive Street Five featuring arrangements of favorite Sinatra songs, classic swing and jazz standards. They are followed by Sticks and Stones from 3 to 4:30 p.m. – a modern country band made up of some of the best musicians in the Rochester area, led by female vocalist Renee Potenza.

The Greece Jazz Band kicks off Sunday at the Firemen’s Field from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with a varied repertoire of familiar standards, dance tunes and modern high-energy jazz charts. Sit back and relax with the Johnny Bauer Band from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Their music is a melting pot of Johnny’s diverse tastes, and covers are remade as his own and include artists from the 70s to present day.

The band will have a special guest appearance by Dori Swarthout on keyboards.

Closing out Canal Day at the Firemen’s Field are The Coupe De’Villes. The Coupes begin their third decade of making music with both original and new members coming together to drive home some serious rhythm and blues.

Spencerport Canal Days volunteer jobs are varied and rewarding Did you know that Spencerport Canal Days is completely run by volunteers? Everything from handling the finances and running the Facebook page to scheduling entertainers and crafters is all done by people in the community who are dedicated to having a local festival that showcases the community, local businesses and not-for-profits.

Ginny Swarthout, owner of the Unique Shop, has been involved for 36 of the festival’s 37 years and is the Canal Days Committee chairperson. “We had just opened the Unique Shop in March prior to the first Canal Days in July,” she remembered.

“Denny Marra came asking for a donation and mentioned he was having trouble getting volunteers. It was too close to the event for my help that year, but I joined the committee the next year and have remained a part of it ever since. I grew up in a small town and we all worked together to make things happen, so my volunteer work has come naturally to me.”

Dori Swarthout, Ginny’s daughter, has been involved in Canal Days with her mom since she was a young girl. For the past two years, Dori has been in charge of hiring the entertainment. “Music is in my blood,” she said. “I have a lot of music contacts through teaching in Spencerport School District and my studio.

I enjoy talking to musicians, so I figured, why not?”

In addition to entertainment, the arts and crafts are a huge draw for the thousands who attend every year. Nora Hampton came on board three years ago when Swarthout needed someone to solicit, communicate with and place the crafters. “I run an annual craft show at my church, so this was a logical connection for me,” said Hampton. “I enjoy working with the crafters and enjoy seeing their creativity come to life in their products.”

After the little problems are solved as the show is being set up, Hampton likes visiting with the vendors and seeing people shop. “It’s a lot of work leading up to the event, but so rewarding to see it all come together and run so smoothly,” she said. “It’s a testament to Ginny and the Canal Days ‘crew’ who have worked so hard to bring this event to the community for years.”

John Krywy’s love of show cars is what drew him to volunteering with the Canal Days Committee 15 years ago. As chairperson, Krywy works with his Car Show subcommittee to sign up vendors, work with sponsors, distribute signs and flyers, order supplies, lay out the field before the show, sign up participants and find additional volunteers to park show cars and direct visitor parking. “I meet so many wonderful people and I see so many great show cars,” said Krywy. “And watching it all come together the day of the show, that’s even more rewarding.”

As far as events go, the Canaligator Race is another signature event associated with Canal Days and it wouldn’t happen without volunteers. This year, Glynne Schultz has taken over

the event and credits prior volunteers with having a well laid out plan. “As a member of our local Chamber of Commerce, it’s important to let folks know how wonderful Spencerport is,” she said. “I care about my community and do what I can to help with community events.

It’s not a big time commitment and you can put your efforts toward the type of work where your interests lie.”

B i l l and P a t Everett and their friends Greg and Denise Schweers did just that. Having volunteered on the Canal Days Committee for many years and in various capacities, the couples decided to suggest having a wine tasting tent in 2013… and it is now one of the festival’s most popular activities.

The foursome visit wineries, facilitate the necessary paperwork for NY State and the wineries, and coordinate the wine tasting tent from start to finish. “It’s a long list, but the four of us share the work and we have fun doing all of it,” said Denise Schweers.

A lot of behind the scenes work goes into Spencerport Canal Days. David Moore has been involved for at least the past 10 years in tax preparation, insurance, and communicating with the IRS and NY State for the event. “I was brought up in a family of nine children and our father taught us that it was important to give back to the community,” said Moore.

Rich Francis became involved with Canal Days because Spencerport reminded him of the little town where he grew up. He is currently the treasurer and is in charge of the Canal Days Facebook page.

Lori Antonelli has served on the committee for seven years developing an effective marketing plan for the event. “I enjoy working with the committee members and being involved,” she said. “It’s a team effort for sure!”

Other volunteers include Ted Saladyga, who photographs the event, and his wife, Alicia, who handles solicitations, and Kathy Magin who is coordinating garbage collection this year as part of the Spencerport Rotary Club.

“We have close to 100 community people volunteering during the event and helping in a variety of ways,” said Swarthout. In the fall, she thanks the volunteers by hosting a delicious volunteer dinner complete with door prizes.

“Our volunteer committee members are fantastic people to work with. They are always willing to go above and beyond their own committee duties if something needs to be done and they are the glue that holds this event together.

We have become a family unit helping each other in whatever way needed.”

Wine tasting tent in its fifth year at Canal Days When Denise and Greg Schweers and Pat and Bill Everett attended the Canal Days Committee volunteer dinner in 2013, they agreed that a wine tasting event would fit in perfectly with the other events at Canal Days. They made it a reality in 2014 and now in its fifth year, the wine tasting tent is one of the most popular destinations at the festival.

“It exceeded all of our initial expectations and those of the committee, and we haven’t looked back since,” said Denise Schweers. “We’ve learned some new things each and every year, and used these to continue improving the overall experience.”

This year’s event will again feature six wineries, in addition to Cabot Creamery Cooperative cheese tasting, and a farm market.

This year’s featured wineries include: •A Gust of Sun Winery, located right in Spencerport, features both dry and sweet wines made from vinifera, hybrid and native American grapes.

•Americana Vineyards and Winery in Interlaken along the Cayuga Wine Trail specializes in Chardonnay and Chablis,

the popular Crystal Lake wine made from Niagara grapes, and dessert-style red Sweet Rosie.

•Lakeland Winery, Syracuse, offers a variety of wines, including Chocolate Covered Cherry dessert wine, a variety of fruit wines, and many others.

•Thousand Islands Winery, Alexandria Bay, features 30 wine varieties with a portion of the proceeds from six wines donated to the 10th Mountain Division Association.

•Three Brothers Wineries in Geneva is actually three distinct wineries that offer everything from fine estate Rieslings to fun, blended sweet wines.

•Victorianbourg Wine Estate, Wilson, creates dry, semi-sweet, chocolate, fruity, ports and sherries at their winery on the shores of Lake Ontario.

“We present wines from the Niagara, Finger Lakes and Thousand Island wine areas,” said Pat Everett. “Folks can purchase bottles at our tasting tent or our town’s liquor store or better yet, take a day trip and visit some of the beautiful wineries on any of the wine trails we are fortunate to have so close to us.”

The Everett’s and Schweers’ learned that one uses all six senses when tasting a sip of wine. “The four of us have had fun learning about wine along with the visitors to the tent and we feel it adds something special for adults looking to expand their knowledge of wines, which is especially valuable in our community, being that we are situated in the midst of NY State’s prime wine country,” added Everett.

Admission to the wine tasting tent, located in the Firemen’s Field on the southwest side of the canal bridge, is $6 per person and includes tastings at all six wineries and cheese samples.

Sealed bottles of wine will be for sale at each winery table and any items purchased at the tent can be stored on site and picked up when you are ready to leave the festival for the day.

Please note that no alcoholic beverages may be consumed outside the wine tent and you must present an I.D. with proof of age to enter.

Lastly, the Committee donated money to the Village of Spencerport “Buy a Bench” Program in order to have a bench placed on the Erie Canal near the Gazebo. Individuals, families, community groups and businesses can buy a bench to replace an existing village bench or have it placed in the new location.

“Canal Days has always been an annual event Spencerport looks forward to and has contributed to our Village with the ‘Someplace Special’ theme for all our residents,” said Village of Spencerport Mayor Gary Penders. “My hat is off for all the donations, efforts and support from all the Canal Day Committee members for our Village, including the recent donation of a park bench for all to enjoy. Great job!”

“Unfortunately in today’s time, we need to make sure our volunteer officers are safe when we are out doing community events or on patrol,” added Zambuto.

The Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum used its donation to have a volunteer convert a bookshelf into a secured display case allowing more items to be on display. They also purchased chairs and tents for events, so that the items would not have to be rented. “We try to provide free if not inexpensive activities and events for the public,” said Simon Devenish, Museum director. “The cost of purchasing one tent is about the same as renting the same sized tent for a one day event.”

Proceeds from last year’s Canaligator Race were donated to Homesteads for Hope, a 501(c)3 non-profit Community Farm located on Manitou Road. “The money is being used to create the Ready Set Work Experience Program and will also be used for completing the inside of the market stand and classroom,” said Jennyrae Brongo, founder. “This is where the students in programs will be taught authentic work skills; greeting customers, inventory, handling money and using a cash register and more.”

“Receiving the donation from the Canaligator Race meant that we had the greater Spencerport Community supporting us to make this community come alive,” Brongo added.

“Homesteads for Hope is building a venue for all, and we cannot do this alone.”

The Spencerport Fire District was able to purchase two $500 cyanide detectors with a Canal Days donation. The detectors are used when firefighters go into a burned structure to determine the cause of the fire and indicate the level of hydrogen cyanide, a cancer-causing chemical. “We have one detector, but wanted two more in case that one was out,” said Fire Chief Joe Baretta. In the past, the department has purchased life rings placed along the canal with funds donated by the Canal Days Committee.

The Canal Days Car Show, held every year at the American Legion Post 330, made a donation to the Legion to repair two air conditioning units. “We have a number of events at the Legion, so we’re trying to get grants and donations to make

Spencerport Canal Days has provided two days of summer fun for attendees of all ages for the past 36 years. But many do not know that the event also provides donations to worthwhile organizations throughout the community. “We are able to make these donations due to no longer having paid promoters doing the show,” said Ginny Swarthout, Canal Days Committee chairperson. “It is now entirely done by volunteers from the community. No one is paid, myself included.” Last year’s Canal Days Committee provided funds to five organizations.

“The Spencerport Canal Days committee has been very generous to the Ogden Special Police unit,” said Peter Zambuto, Ogden Special Police chief. “We have purchased many items for our officers and department that we could not have purchased otherwise.” These include exterior vest covers, baseball caps, a retractable barricade and other items to support the Special Police unit. “This past year, we used the donation to purchase Kevlar vests to start replacing ones we had purchased over 20 years ago,” said Zambuto. The 12th Annual Canaligator Race will take place on Sunday, July 29 at 4:30 p.m., so be sure to purchase your tickets during Spencerport Canal Days at either of two Information Booths on Saturday, July 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets also may be purchased at The Unique Shop, 130 South Union Street, Spencerport.
