The Brockport Arts Festival - a grassroots community event Each summer for the last 24 years, a community organization called the Brockport Integrated Service Club Organization (BISCO) has sponsored the Brockport Arts Festival. This community event draws tens of thousands of people to the Village of Brockport for a jam-packed weekend of art, entertainment, food and fun. The 2018 Brockport Festival will be held on August 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the heart of the Village Brockport on Main Street.

According to festival organizers, this year promises to be a banner year. “The festival has gone back to its roots,” Kathy Kristansen, Brockport Arts Festival cochair said. Over the last year, the BAF Committee has focused on revamping the layout of the festival as well as researching and recruiting new artists.

This year’s festival has attracted 100 artists who hail from throughout the United States. “We’ve attracted new and different vendors this year,” Art Appleby, Brockport Arts Festival co-chair said.

During the BAF weekend, festival attendees can find a plethora of activities, food and entertainment. A complete listing of the entertainment is included in this section. Watch for street performers showing their talents at various sites on

Main Street. A farmer’s market will take place on Market Street on Sunday, August 12 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Area farmers and growers will sell a variety of locally grown fruits, vegetables, flowers, homemade goods and much more. Make a purchase and support your local growers.

Area vintage car buffs are invited to show off their prized wheels during the cruise-in on Sunday, August 12 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monroe Avenue.

Like the artists, it was important to the BAF committee to offer a variety of food vendors. “We’ve reduced the number of food vendors this year. It was our goal to allow the Main Street restaurants the opportunity to attract some traffic,” Kristansen said. The majority of the food vendors will be nearby the Morgan Manning House, a landmark historical property that is located on Main Street. Appleby noted, “Visitors can expect lots of options like barbeque, wraps, pierogies and of course, popcorn and lemonade.” Seating will be located adjacent to each of the three food court areas making it convenient for dining.

Festivalgoers will find the popular Wine Garden in the middle of the festival area on Main Street. This year’s wineries include A Gust of Sun, Weis Vineyards, Lakeland Winery, and Victorianbourg Wine Estate.

Each of these wineries will offer free samples daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. New to the Wine Garden is Black Button Distilling, a Rochester-based distillery. Samples of their products like Citrus Forward Gin, Straight Four Grain Bourbon and All American Corn Vodka will be offered. Black Button Distilling and all four wineries will have their products for sale in the Wine Garden during the festival. Admission to the Wine Garden is $5 per person to those 21 years of age and older. Valid identification must be shown.

Over the last year, the festival committee set some goals, which noted building awareness of all the Brockport Arts Festival offers. Committee members met with students from the College at Brockport and recruited their assistance. A graphic design student created the festival poster, while communications and public relations students set up and launched social media accounts. Other students have been enlisted to assist with hospitality and the logistics of setting up the festival. “We really want to make this an event that the entire com-

munity is invested in,” Kristansen said.

Kristansen and Appleby invite folks to attend this fun, family-friendly festival.

“We’ve worked with the Brockport Police Department to make this a great community event for people of all ages,” Kristansen said.

The shuttle bus service will not operate this year, however, there is plenty of parking available in the village parking lots or on the side streets. Main Street from Clark Street to the Railroad Bridge will be closed for all traffic from Friday, August 10 until after the festival ends on Sunday, August 12.

The weather can be warm during the festival weekend so festival organizers encourage visitors to leave their animals home.

The annual Duck Derby - a community favorite The Brockport Arts Festival (BAF) ends the weekend’s festivities with a canal event called the Duck Derby. Thousands of small, yellow plastic ducks are set afloat from the Main Street Canal Lift Bridge in the Village of Brockport. The ducks float down the Erie Canal as folks line both sides of the water to cheer on the floating ducks. The first nine and last nine ducks that cross the finish line are the winners of this race.

This year’s prizes total over $7,000 and include Wegman’s gift cards, cash, a gas grill from Lowes, gas cards, artwork, a membership to the fitness center at the Sweden/Clarkson Recreation Center, and a $155 membership to the Special Events Recreation Center at the College at Brockport.

“This event is the biggest fundraiser for the festival,” said Art Appleby, BAF cochairperson.

Interested in trying your luck on a duck?

One duckling costs $5, a family flock of five tickets costs $20 and a community flock of 35 tickets costs $100. Interested in taking a chance? During the festival duck tickets are available at the BAF Duck Derby Booth and also from any member of these community groups, Brockport Lions, Rotary and Kiwanis and Towpath Lodge members, as well as BISCO members.

This year’s Derby will benefit the Brockport Area Youth and the organizations selling tickets.

“Each year, we choose different community organizations as beneficiaries of the

proceeds from the Duck Derby,” Appleby explained.

downtown Brockport. Pre-event festivities begin at 4:00 p.m.

Artists showcase their talents at Brockport Arts Festival Changes to this year’s Brockport Arts Festival (BAF) will certainly impress festivalgoers. After a review of the 2017 BAF, the committee decided to make some modifications to the festival.

“It was important to the committee that we provide original, high-quality and handmade art. We scouted other festivals, invited artists to join and also recruited artists who were referred to us,” Kathy Kristansen, BAF co-chair explained. Art Appleby co-chairs the festival with Kristansen. He added, “The committee also felt that it was vital that we offer a balance of genres.”

Genres range from pottery to textiles to jewelry to specialty food products and even furniture.

Visitors to the festival will find Jackie’s Jams and Jellies, a “food artist” based in Rush, New York. Owner Jackie Kukurudza began her business by using fruit from her mother’s fruit trees. Stop by her booth and sample unique flavors as Everything Tomato Jam or Jalapeno jelly.

The Brockport Arts Festival continues to be a juried art show. A committee reviews all of the artists’ applications for approval and during the festival committee members visit artist booths to judge for festival awards.

This year’s Brockport Arts Festival (BAF) offers a wide variety of entertainment that is sure to please audiences of all ages.

Musicians and performers will be located on three main stages, one located at the north end of Main Street near the canal bridge, another on the street near the Morgan Manning House and the third stage at Sagawa Park. Street performers will entertain in the vicinity of these main stages.

Back by popular demand are bands Feed Back and Brick Band, which will perform on Saturday, August 11 on the Canal Bridge Stage. Nashville recording artist Alyssa Trahan will also perform on Saturday, August 11 on the stage near the Morgan Manning House. Popular local groups like Master Lim’s Taekwondo Academy, Body

by Summer and the Lawn Chair Ladies will entertain throughout the festival weekend.

Mark Gardner is the Entertainment Director for the BAF. He noted how the festival is great community event that draws local and regional acts.

“Each year, we try to bring well-known artists to the festival. We have a great lineup set for this year,” Gardner said.

Farmer Tom Walsh is a recognized children’s entertainer who hails from the Buffalo, New York area. He is scheduled to appear on Sunday, August 12 in Sagawa Park for three shows.

“Farmer Tom is new to the festival this year. He promises to be a hit with kids,” Gardner said.

Also new to this year’s entertainment slate is the Brockport Buskers. This group of local musicians will lead a community acoustic jam on Sunday, August 12 from 1 until 3 p.m. in Sagawa Park. Folks are invited to bring their instruments, and their voices and sit in on this session. An open mic session will immediately follow.

“The late Jimmy Foote led this group and we wanted to honor his memory. So we invite the community to come to play along with this great group of musicians,” Gardner said.

BISCO - a valuable community organization When good people come together to do good work, then good things happen. Each year an organization called BISCO sponsors the Brockport Arts Festival (BAF). BISCO is the acronym for Brockport Integrated Service Club Organization. This organization consists of members from the Brockport Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, Elks, Towpath Lodge, as well as members from other community associations. The purpose of BISCO is to raise funds to support programs and projects for children who reside in the western portion of Monroe County.

BISCO has funded a number of Brockport-Sweden community projects including, the purchase of an eight passenger cycle,

trailer and storage shed for Camp Abilities; the Brockport Toy Shelf; the Cool Kids Program (a Brockport-based organization that provides educational, cultural entertainment for children), and the list goes on and on.

Organizing an event the size of the Brockport Arts Festival takes dedication and the work of many. Volunteers are needed, much appreciated, and always welcomed.
