International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend August 21 and 22, 12:00PM. - 5:00PM

Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse 70 Lighthouse Street, Rochester, 14612 The International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW) is an annual event held on the third full weekend of August each year. The event was the brainchild of John Forsyth and Mike Dalrymple who were members of the Ayr Amateur Radio Group in Scotland. The event, which started in 1998, has developed into an international gathering of amateur radio operators from an estimated 95 countries.

Concurrent with this event, the Association of Lighthouse Keepers conduct their Lighthouse Heritage Weekend whereby lighthouse managers and keepers all around the world are encouraged to open their doors to the public for a viewing of their lighthouse and its history.

The Rochester Amateur Radio Association, (RARA) will set up ham radio stations for this weekend. They will be contacting other stations around the World and U.S. Come learn more about Ham Radio.

Local Cookbook Publication Announced The Town of Greece will be publishing a local cookbook in celebration of the Town’s 200th Year Anniversary. This Bicentennial Cookbook will feature community recipes, and your help is needed in finding the best mix of recipes to include. Dig up that favorite family recipe, either new or passed down for generations, and send it in for possible inclusion in our Bicentennial Cookbook.

A few rules for submission: When submitting recipes, please include the category (appetizer, entrée, dessert, etc.) as well as a photo of your masterpiece and, of course, the ingredients and the directions. We hope to include many special treats from kitchens throughout the town.

Additionally, we will have a special section dedicated to local es-

tablishments throughout the town: Emergency Responders (does the fire department have a winning recipe?), School District Favorites, Local Restaurants, etc. If your recipe fits into one of these specialty categories, please be certain to make note of that on your submission as well.

Recipe submissions will be accepted from August 1st through October 15th, 2021. You must own the rights to any photographs submitted and recipes need to be your own or a modification of a previously published recipe (something you’ve customized).

All recipes must be submitted digitally at greeceny. gov/cookbook and the form must be completed in its entirety to be considered for inclusion in the Bicentennial Cookbook.

Town of Greece Seeking Grant from The Skatepark Project The Town of Greece will be seeking a grant from The Skatepark Project. Founded in 2002 as the Tony Hawk Foundation and later renamed, this organization has contributed funding and built over 600 skate parks worldwide.

Many have been following the progress of the inclusive playground, questions have arisen about if or when the Town may replace the skate park. The old skate park in Basil Marella Park, which was in need of update and repair, was deemed as the perfect fit for the inclusive playground. Its placement was the most desirable location for the playground because of the unique requirements that were needed to be certain the area was truly accessible. The requirements were very particular; we needed a site that had very little ground disturbance, was in close proximity to restrooms (in particular an accessible restroom) and a level parking lot with adequate access. All of this was taken into

consideration to be certain the user experience was as least challenging as possible. All of our parks were studied to see which would meet these requirements.

“Efforts have been put forth over the last few months to lay the groundwork for a successful application process. These include ensuring we have an appropriate location, engaging with a local architect to discuss size, options, feasibility, and potential layout. Additionally, we have been reviewing the grant rules and stipulations to be certain our potential plan adheres to all application guidelines. With the next round of grant funding opening up in August, we are well-prepared and we will be putting forth a strong effort and commitment in applying for the grant funding,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said.

Hunting and Fishing License Issuance The Town Clerk’s Department will continue with the scheduling of appointments for customers seeking their hunting and/or fishing licenses. They will still welcome walk-ins, however, they encourage everyone to take advantage of the appointment system as heavy volumes involving other town services will increase within the next couple of months.

Residents interested in obtaining their license are asked to contact the Town Clerk’s office at (585) 723-2389 and 723-2364 between the hours of 9AM – 5PM daily. Additionally, you may reach out to the Town Clerk for any questions at (585) 7232341.

Lakeview Community Church August Challenge

Lakeview Community Church, 30 Long Pond Road (near Edgemere Drive), supports the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf (GEFS) every month. However, August is special in that there is a specific challenge. Last year, due to the pandemic, only monetary donations were collected and a check for more than $4500 was given to GEFS. The year before, the goal was 1500 cans of peaches and more than 1800 cans were donated.

This year, the challenge is to collect 1500 cans of Chunky Soup and $500. Donations of Chunky Soup or a monetary donation may be dropped off at the church on Sunday mornings or on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9am-1pm. Checks should be made payable to Lakeview Community Church with “GEFS” on the memo line. Volunteers will also be at the church on Saturday, August 28, from 9am-1pm. Spring Bulb Choice Question: I’d like to plant some spring-flowering bulbs, but I have a deer problem. What can I plant that they won’t bother?

Answer: Hungry deer love the foliage and flowers of tulips and crocus, and rodents also consume the bulbs, so confine these bulbs to areas of less wildlife activity! However, there are some bulbs not particularly bothered by deer or rodents. Daffodils are practically immune from animal damage in our area, and they come in a variety of sizes and blooming times, from late March to late May. Colors include white, pinks, and bright orange, as well as different shades of yellow. Winter aconites and snowdrops provide early color (yellow and white, respectively) and are usually not bothered. Leucojum, the ‘summer’ snowflake, is usually not bothered. There are several smaller bulbs that naturalize into carpets of color and are not usually bothered: Siberian squill, Chionodoxa, and Puschkinia, in shades of lavender, blue, purple, pink, or white, depending on the variety. Fritillaria are generally considered animal-proof. The most common types are the small checkered lily and the tall crown imperial. Allium may be sampled and then mostly avoided, in my experience.

Then, there are the intermediate-risk bulbs, for which some Master Gardeners report animal damage, and others do not. I would suggest assessing your deer pressure at your home and then trying a few, to see whether your particular deer herd will bother them or not. Deer food habits do vary from site to site!

Intermediate-risk bulbs include: Muscari, grape hyacinths (deer browsing on fall foliage doesn’t seem to affect them), Iris reticulata, an early-blooming bulbous iris, Hyacinths, Camassia species, Spanish bluebells or wood hyacinth (a shade-tolerant bulb whose latest name is Hyacinthoides hispanica).

Last, but not least: the species tulips are worth a try. Several Master Gardeners report that the deer don’t seem to find them.

Low to the ground, color and size varying by the species, they all prefer a warm sunny well-drained spot and can be mulched with small gravel to deter rodents from digging.

New Inclusive Playground Unveiled August 12, 2021 was a very special morning in the Town of Greece. Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich officially cut the ribbon in celebration of the first inclusive playground in the Town of Greece.

The inclusive playground, located at Basil Marella Park, was built in partnership between the Town of Greece and Endless Highway. Endless Highway, led by Rob Tortorella and Caralie Fennessey, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to ensuring children and young adults with physical disabilities have opportunities to participate in adaptive and inclusive sports, recreation, and arts. This organization raised $50,000 with an aggressive fundraising campaign for the We- Go-Round swing and partnered with our young Greece resident, Santii Patel, who wanted something for kids with disabilities to play on.

The Town of Greece contributed over $165,000 to the project, and the Town led the rest of the way, supporting the remaining development of the playground, which includes a sensory center, swings, and the We-Go-Swing. The We-Go-Swing was introduced in January of this year and is one of the first in the country to be built and debut at this playground! It is the first wheelchair platform swing to meet all playground safety codes. This amenity allows a person in a wheelchair to swing with their friends and family without restriction and without having to leave the main play area.

Development and implementation of this playground was a community collaboration. On June 11th & 12th, 2021, volunteers participated in a Community Build where they helped assemble and install the majority of the playground equipment. This playground also features “poured in place” rubber surfacing, which is a unitary surface that allows for ease of mobility. Other site amenities include benches, shade systems, and a fence which is important for safety and security. The goal of this playground is to maximize the play value for those of all abilities. Additionally, the restrooms have been adapted to incorporate a changing table that is designed for both kids and adults to be changed with minimal challenges.

“We are fortunate to live in such a supportive community” said Supervisor Reilich. “Stay tuned as future improvements, designed for comfort and accessibility, are planned.”

KodaVista: Greece’s First National Register Historic District The recent installation of a special marker recognizing the uniqueness of the KodaVista community begs the question: How did a small neighborhood in southeastern Greece receive such a recognition?

In 2015, Gina DiBella, then volunteer chair of the Greece Historic Preservation Commission, informed community members that KodaVista might be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. A “cultural resource survey” was needed to make that determination. On behalf of the Historic Preservation Commission, Gina successfully applied for a grant from the Preservation League of New York State. A consultant was eventually hired by the town to conduct research about the neighborhood and write the survey.

In addition to primary source documents, the consultant also spoke with current residents. Unfortunately, the Greece Historic Preservation Commission was not allowed to assist with the survey and was eventually dissolved by the town.

The KodaVista Community Association, founded by neighbors in 1928, fully supported the project and tried to be patient as the town administration took over the process. Once the survey was completed and a National Register nomination was written by Preservation Studios of Buffalo, Gina worked behind-the-scenes to move the nomination forward. Her contacts at the New York State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in Albany visited the neighborhood to learn about the unique origins of the subdivision. She helped neighbors understand more about the nomination and traveled to Albany when it was reviewed by the New York State Board for Historic Preservation. The New York SHPO and Preservation Review Board approved the nomination in June 2019 and sent it to the National Park Service in Washington, D.C., which approved it for listing later that summer.

KodaVista is the first neighborhood in Greece to be listed as a National Register Historic District. One of the benefits of being listed in the National Register is that homeowners of properties that contribute to the District can take advantage of the New York State Historic Homeownership Rehabilitation Credit and receive 20% back on their New York State income tax on qualifying rehabilitation expenses. Drive was paid for by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, a private funder. William Pomeroy, founder of the organization, encourages curiosity about and enthusiasm for local history. Town historian Keith Suhr applied to the Pomeroy Foundation for the funds to purchase the marker. It was installed by the town in July 2021. The neighborhood is grateful to the Pomeroy Foundation for providing the funds for the marker. It was a six-year process, and residents are indebted to all those who treasure and work to preserve those elements from our past that inform our present.

The Town of Greece has many more areas, neighborhoods and properties with interesting stories and connections. Some already are listed or may be eligible for listing in the National Register. To learn more about Greece’s history, visit the town historian’s office in the Greece Public Library (2 Vince Tofany Boulevard) or the Greece Historical Society (595 Long Pond Road). The Greece Historical Society operates an excellent museum full of interesting exhibits about our town’s history and regularly offers programs on a broad variety of topics. In 2022, the Town of Greece will mark the 200th anniversary of its founding. Both the town and the Greece Historical Society are planning activities to commemorate this milestone. Watch for details!

New Splash Pad Aqua Spout Unveiled Earlier this year, a survey of Greece residents was held to choose the next aqua spout to be placed in the popular Wild Over Water (WOW) Splash Zone. The WOW Zone is located on the Greece Town Hall Campus to the left of the Community and Senior Center and is the region’s largest municipal splash pad.

The survey, which was available on Facebook, offered participants two options and prompted them to choose their favorite. The options were between a Sally Spider Aqua Spout and a Billy Box Turtle Aqua Spout. Over 400 residents participated in the survey! With 273 votes, Billy Box Turtle won by a landslide.

On Thursday, July 29th, Supervisor Reilich officially unveiled the Billy Box Turtle Aqua Spout.

As an added surprise, another new feature was added, Larry the Lion. See both of these new features at the WOW Zone, free for Greece residents.

Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf (GEFS) is an emergency food pantry and member of Foodlink, Inc., part of Feeding America. GEFS’s goal is to make sure that all neighbors in Greece have enough food to eat. With so many new gardeners planting backyard gardens, the food shelf asks home gardeners to consider donating their excess produce to GEFS. Amy Peritsky, Chair of Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf and Clothing Closet, Inc. says the food pantry outreach program began in the 70s, “A small group of people got together to make sure the food needs in Greece were met and that everyone had enough to eat. Our food pantry has grown as the need has grown. We work with churches and service organizations to reach everyone in need,” Peritsky said.

The Food Shelf was started by church members, it is not associated with any particular church, and has become a truly community-wide organization. In 1983 the GEFS was incorporated and was qualified as a 501.c3 fed- In partnership with Foodlink, GEFS receives a monthly allocation to help feed erally tax-exempt organization. GEFS is also partnered with Foodlink, Inc. Peritsky said, “We receive a monthly allocation from Foodlink. This allows us to shop at Foodlink’s huge store where they receive donations from retail stores and the Federal Government. We can make our donated dollars go quite far at the Foodlink store.” Donated dollars are also used to purchase from farmer’s markets and local retail stores.

YMCA Community Garden The Northwest Family YMCA, 730 Long Pond Road in Greece, contributes fresh produce from their Community Garden to the GEFS. Their community garden program started in 2014. In the raised beds garden, they grow tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, beans and cucumbers. The garden is maintained by volunteers and members.

Sydney John is Health and Wellness Director at the Northwest YMCA, she said, “This year has been unique for our Community Garden. We had no garden last summer because we were closed due to COVID. This year we had a lot of maintenance to do on our garden beds. In past years we have had 15 to 20 volunteers who maintain the garden, this year we have 8 to 10 volunteers doing the same work.”

Pre-COVID, the Y promoted “Intergenerational Gardening” by including volunteers of all ages- families, teens, young adults, and active older adult groups. Their “Bridging the Generational Gap” program partnered experienced senior gardeners and young people working together in the garden, sharing their skills and experiences.

“The preschool program also used to be involved with the garden several times throughout the year with the assistance of the garden volunteers they learned about plants and growing vegetables,” John said. The Y plans to bring these programs back after COVID. GEFS Programs and Services Each month GEFS serves an average of 445 people. addition, they distribute monthly baskets to an average of 40 low-income, home-bound individuals.

There are several food programs available through GEFS including: Client Choice - Households in need may shop for five days of food.

Home Delivery - Delivery of five days of food to households that lack transportation to the Food Shelf or who are homebound.

Basket Program - Providing supplemental food each month to home-bound individuals with extremely low incomes.

Thanksgiving Baskets - Coordinating the distribution of Thanksgiving dinner baskets, matching community donors with families in need.

When a call comes in to GEFS for food assistance, individuals leave a message and their call is returned by a GEFS volunteer.

The volunteer determines the client’s food needs, and offers suggestions for additional assistance such as school lunch programs, and clothing available through the Clothing Closet. If the caller does not have transportation, safe delivery of the food will be arranged.

GEFS’s food and monetary donations come from individuals

and community organizations, local churches and businesses, schools, Scouting for Food, Crop Walk, Letter Carriers’ Food Drive, United Way (Agency #1470) and the Greece Teachers’ Association Stuff-a-Bus Food Drive.

Volunteer Program Polly McCubbin is Volunteer Coordinator and Vice Chair of GEFS, she said, “We are always looking for volunteers to help at both the Food Shelf and Clothing Closet. Right now, we are looking for someone to work as a Verifier. This position requires a person who is a good communicator, is empathetic yet firm, and is a good listener.”

There are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities at both the Food Shelf and Clothing Closet.

They include: •Drivers to deliver food to families living in Greece or Charlotte.

•Drivers to deliver food to homebound people (3rd Thursday of every month).

•Verifier that accepts calls from individuals needing food.

•Dispatcher that contacts drivers to deliver food.

•Driver that contacts client and delivers food.

•Packer that packs the food boxes for delivery.

•Shopping Assistants who work with clients during on-site shopping hours.

Exploring increased accessibility along the Erie Canal

Pop-up Palooza: Accessible Kayaking & Cycling Exploration, hosted by Rochester Accessible Adventures (RAA), was held Saturday, August 7, at the Brockport Welcome Center, allowing participants of all abilities to try standard and adaptive kayaking and cycling equipment that best met their needs. The event was sponsored by the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor as a 1st Mile Challenge event, affording people with disabilities and their family and friends opportunities to recreate together and build more active lifestyles.

RAA is a nonprofit that was formed to transform how recreation businesses offer their services, ensuring that they are able to provide inclusive and accessible experiences every time their doors are open. RAA works closely with its Community Health Inclusion partner, Erie Canal Boat Company, which has locations in Medina, Fairport, and Lockport and is expanding its business across the Western New York Erie Canalway. Because of its work with RAA, Erie Canal Boat Company now offers kayak and cycle rentals with standard and adaptive equipment available.

The Canalway Trail, which is part of the Empire State Trail, is accessible for people of all abilities to walk, stroll with a wheelchair, or cycle. The trail meets Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Several places along the canal have adaptive kayak launches, but Brockport’s is the first BoardSafe accessible launch on the canal. The second customized dock will be opening soon in Fairport.

According to Anita O’Brien, Executive Director of Rochester Accessible Adventures, BoardSafe’s customized and highly accessorized docks/launches fit the needs of canal mandates and the wide variety of needs of the community. RAA is working with

Tony Gruttadauro, of Brockport, was just one of those who attended the event. “My wife and I got excited when the kayak launch in Brockport was completed. The same week of completion I rode my power chair out onto the launch and dreamed of some day experiencing the joy of kayaking. Today that dream came true with the help from Rochester Accessible Adventures and the folks from the Brockport Welcome Center,” he said.

Tony was paired with Gerry Wahl, an RAA volunteer CanalPal who rides or cycles along with those who rent adaptive equipment from Erie Canal Boat Company. Tony said, “The RAA staff and volunteers are instructive and friendly. Safety is first and foremost with the RAA staff. I was outfitted with a life vest and using the launch was explained completely by knowledgeable staff. This is the first time I have ever been kayaking and it is easier than I expected. Being (out of my wheelchair) on the water with my son was freeing.”

After kayaking, Tony tried cycling using a bike adapted with hand pedals. “I will say that cycling was more difficult for me than kayaking... or maybe I shouldn’t do both in one afternoon.”

The event and the opportunities showcased meant so much to Tony. “Today was one of the most enjoyable days I’ve had in a long time. Having a disease that slowly takes away your independence can be one of your greatest enemies. Regaining any small piece of my independence is like winning Olympic gold.

“Thank you all those involved in bringing the kayak launch to Brockport and a very special thank you to the Rochester Accessible Adventures.”

Bob Radliff, Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, said, “We hope that communities and businesses throughout the canal corridor continue to design, build, and offer experiences that are inclusive for all.”

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich It has been a very active summer here in the Town of Greece. From food truck rodeos and summer concerts to the Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration, we have been happy to bring back beloved events that were not possible last year.

During last month’s meeting of the Greece Town Board, we recognized the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship recipient Halie Cardon. She received a proclamation and a $2,000 scholarship check. The Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship provides the Greece community with the opportunity to recognize a student that regularly upholds exemplary moral values, devotes time and energy into helping serve the Greece community, and consistently displays outstanding leadership skills. This scholarship has been established by the Town of Greece to highlight Jerry’s exceptional character, virtue, and lifelong love of learning and public service. With over 25 years of public service, Jerry served on the Greece Youth Board, was elected as Town Councilman for 10 years, and served as Deputy Supervisor until his untimely passing in July of 2014. Halie is a graduate of Greece Athena High School. She has been heavily involved in school activities and in the community. Congratulations, Halie! The Town of Greece is very proud of you and stands behind you as you continue to set examples of volunteerism and leadership in our community.

In July, I joined the Town Historian in unveiling a historic marker in the Koda Vista neighborhood. The Koda Vista neighborhood consists of around 250 homes in the southeast corner of Greece with a history spanning over ninety years. The original streets were planned Kodak Employees Realty Corporation in the mid1920s and were settled primarily by Kodak Employees. In 1928, sixty of the early residents formed Koda Vista Community Association (KVCA). The neighborhood expanded after World War II and was part of the dramatic housing and population increase experienced town-wide. The Koda Vista neighborhood is unique in its early history and the variety of architectural styles, which can still be seen today. We were happy to recognize what this neighborhood represents in our rich history and in the strength and unity of our community.

We recently welcomed a new restaurant to town: Margarita’s Mexican Cantina. The new restaurant is located at 2525 West Ridge Road and is owned by Jose Castaneda. Jose is originally from Saltillo, Mexico. He and his family and associates have been involved in the culinary business for over 20 years and have 12 restaurants across the state. Jose has had his eye on a location in Rochester for quite a while and found the perfect spot in Greece.

Jose’s daughter, Brenda Castaneda, will be the manager of this location and will be assisted by General Manager’s Marissa Salazar and Jose Avalos.

Stop by the Greece Town Hall Campus Wild Over Water Zone and visit our newest addition: Billy Box Turtle! We offered a survey to residents earlier this year where they were able to choose between Billy Box Turtle and Sally Spider. Billy Box Turtle won by a landslide! We also added another addition to the Wow Zone: Larry the Lion!

Jerry J. Helfer Scholarship Recipient Halie Cardon with members of Jerry Helfer’s family, and Town Board Members.

Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship Recipient Announced On July 15, 2021, the recipient of the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship, Halie Cardon from Greece Athena High School, was recognized by the Town of Greece. Halie received a recognition proclamation and a $2,000 scholarship check during the meeting of the Greece Town Board.

The Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship provides the Greece community with the opportunity to recognize a student that regularly upholds exemplary moral values, devotes time and energy into helping serve the Greece community, and consistently displays outstanding leadership skills. This scholarship has been established by the Town of Greece to highlight Jerry’s exceptional character, virtue, and lifelong love of learning and public service. With over 25 years of public service, Jerry served on the Greece Youth Board, was elected as Town Councilman for 10 years, and served as Deputy Supervisor until his untimely passing in July of 2014.

Halie is a graduate of Greece Athena High School. She has

been heavily involved in school activities, including participating in History Club, Yearbook Club, and Varsity Volleyball. She has also received High Honor Roll with Distinction, was a Junior ROTC Cadet, and received the 2021 Monroe County Council of School Superintendents Outstanding Senior Award. In addition to school activities, Halie is also a great volunteer in the community. Her activities in the community include the Dream to Believe school community service group, the Greater Purpose Rochester school community service group, the Athena Cares Club school community service group, and initiating a Junior ROTC project to reduce plastic water bottle usage. Halie plans to attend SUNY Genesseo to study Business Administration.

Inflammation and Your Health

Almost every chronic health problem in the human body is driven by inflammation. Inflammation is most often linked to a poor diet with foods that cause inflammatory reactions in the body. Inflammation is part of the body’s natural defense system, however when your immune system shifts out of balance, inflammation can run rampant causing a chronic fire in your body that can create illness, pain and disease. It can create Alzheimer’s, cancer, ADD, depression, increased bad cholesterol, painful joints, leaky gut syndrome, Parkinson disease, coronary heart disease and diabetes.

In particular, inflammation can really affect our brain. Our diet is ultimately the biggest factor in unhealthy inflammation in our body. The American diet became higher in processed carbs, lower dietary fiber and lower healthy fats, which paved the way to these inflammation driven diseases.

By changing our diet and making a few simple lifestyle changes we can drastically reduce inflammation and the diseases caused by it. Diet: More dietary fiber, less processed carbohydrates,

changing the quality of our fats we eat. Remove highly processed unhealthy fats such as omega 6 oils like soybean oil and canola oil. Choose healthy fats and oils such as unrefined coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, grass fed butter and ghee. Eat more natural foods, i.e. berries and steel cut oatmeal, and reduce foods that are processed and manufactured. Read labels and strive to eat foods that have ingredients that are from real food and reduce or eliminate foods with added chemicals. Try new foods and cook your meals.

Restorative Sleep: Sleep 7-8 hours a day. If you struggle with regular healthy sleep see a sleep specialist.

Aerobic exercise: Move your body to increase heart rate for 20-30 minutes at least 3x per week.

NYS Department of Transportation announces completion of Resiliency Project $850,000 Storm Sewer Upgrades Along Edgemere Drive Will Safeguard Flood Prone Intersection; Assure Passage of Emergency Vehicles.

Projects Selected as Part of Governor’s $300 million Resiliency & Economic Development Initiative.

The NYS Department of Transportation today announced that construction has concluded on an $850,000 resiliency project completed by the Town of Greece, as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI). The intersection of Edgemere and Island Cottage and adjacent roadways are prone to flooding and storm sewer system backflow during highwater that impact accessibility to area homes and businesses. The completed project will mitigate these impacts during high water events, as well as ensure that the roadway remains open to residents and emergency vehicles.

Mitigation measures for this project included replacement of the storm sewer system and installation of check valves to prevent backflows.

State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said, “New York State’s Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative is vital to helping flood-prone communities not only rebuild, but withstand whatever mother nature throws their way. The Department of Transportation is proud to work with our state and local partners such as the Town of Greece to strengthen communities, and ensure residents and emergency vehicles can get where they need to go during inclement weather events.”

New York State Secretary of State Rossana Rosado said, “New York is moving to build a more resilient state with infrastructure that can withstand future changes. Through the REDI initiative, New York State agencies are working with communities like the Town of Greece to improve storm water systems, which will help mitigate the impact of high-water events and improve safety for residents and visitors to the area.”

New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon said, “The Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative continues to support flood-prone communities as they rebuild better than before. We will continue to invest in safeguards that strengthen and protect communities from future disasters.”

DASNY President and CEO Reuben R. McDaniel III said, “DASNY is proud to support Governor Cuomo’s vision for protecting communities from flooding and to enhance New York’s economy. The REDI projects in Greece demonstrate Governor Cuomo’s commitment to protecting the infrastructure and economic vitality of New York’s waterfront communities.” requested Assemblyman Josh Jensen said, “I am pleased at the completion of these critically important improvements in the Town of Greece. These much-needed infrastructure improvements will bolster the resiliency of our shoreline. Residents and small businesses will feel more secure if, and when, lake levels rise again. I have been proud to support state investment in our community

and applaud the partnership between the State of New York and the Town of Greece to ensure completion of this much needed improvements.”

Town of Greece Supervisor William Reilich said, “With the completion of yet another REDI project, we take another major step forward in securing a more resilient waterfront. This project in particular is a victory for economic resiliency and public safety.

The historic flooding of 2017 and 2019 left the intersection of Edgemere Drive and Island Cottage Road and other nearby roadways flooded, affecting traffic safety and in some cases making the roads impassable for even emergency responders. Restaurants at this intersection, which are vital to Greece’s waterfront economy suffered a significant downturn in business as a result of road flooding, only to be hit the very next year by shutdowns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The survival of these local businesses is a testament to the strength and adaptability of our local economy. With each project we finish, the REDI program has allowed us to replenish our resiliency funds so we can move on to the next. We are grateful for the Governor’s recognition and quick response to the economic impacts that would result from the flooding, and our thanks go out to our partners at the state and county Departments of Transportation for bringing this project to completion.”

In response to the extended pattern of flooding along the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, Governor Cuomo created REDI to increase the resilience of shoreline communities and bolster economic development in the region. Five REDI Regional Planning Committees, comprised of representatives from eight counties (Niagara and Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga and Oswego, and Jefferson and St. Lawrence) were established to identify local priorities, at-risk infrastructure and other assets, and public safety concerns. The REDI Commission allocated $20 million for homeowner assistance, $30 million to improve the resiliency of businesses, and $15 million toward a regional dredging effort that will benefit each of the eight counties in the REDI regions. The remaining $235 million has been allocated towards local and regional projects that advance and exemplify the REDI mission.

At Governor Cuomo’s direction, the REDI commission toured areas hard hit by flooding on Lake Ontario and worked with local communities to come up with a new vision for the shoreline from both a resiliency and economic development point of view in order to build back better and stronger for the future.

Leaf spot disease in tomatoes With the wet weather we’ve had this summer, you are probably noticing signs of fungal diseases in your garden. Tomatoes are susceptible to a variety of such diseases in the summer and one of those is Septoria leaf spot.

This fungal disease affects only the leaves of the plant, not the fruit. Typically the leaves closest to the ground are the first to be affected. They develop small, dark spots which can rapidly enlarge and have a tan or gray center. In the center of the spot, you may see small, black dots, which are the fruiting bodies of the fungus. If there are enough spots, the leaves turn yellow and then brown; the leaf will eventually wilt, dry up, and fall off.

Michigan State University Extension says the Septoria pathogen spreads easily via water splashing to the upper leaves, causing further defoliation.

Once Septoria leaf spot is evident, it can be controlled but not cured. It can become an issue with tomatoes year after year if tomatoes are always planted in the same garden spot. Wet and warm conditions cause the spores to exude from the Septoria fruiting bodies present on infected leaves. When the spores land on a healthy leaf, spotting can appear in five days if weather conditions are ideal.

Cultural techniques work well in controlling the fungus. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends pinching off leaves with leaf spots. Dispose of diseased foliage in plastic garbage bags and put them in the trash. You may remove one-third of the plant’s leaves to help prevent the spread of the fungus.

Some gardeners routinely prune the lower leaves of tomato plants for this reason. Keep leaves dry by watering at the soil level, preferably early in the day.

Mulching the soil below tomato plants reduces the ability of diseases in the soil to splash onto the lower leaves. You can use landscape fabrics, straw, plastic mulch, or dried leaves. Staking tomatoes or using a trellis can help keep plants off the soil and also help with air circulation – which facilitates faster drying out

of leaves after rainfall.

Don’t work in tomato plants when the leaves are wet. Save jobs like staking, pruning, and weeding for when plants are dry.

Crop rotation is another way to help control and even prevent fungal disease. Wait at least two years before planting tomatoes or peppers in the same location. Do not save seed from infected plants.

The University of Minnesota reminds gardeners that most home garden tomatoes do not need to be treated with fungicide for Septoria leaf spot. The plants can tolerate high levels of leaf loss from leaf spot diseases without affecting the number of tomatoes produced by the plant.

If you have recurring Septoria leaf spot infections year after year, however, you may want to consider using a fungicide, which must be applied before signs of disease occur. Michigan State University Extension recommends chlorothalonil, which can be found in several fungicide brands, and “Serenade,” which is an organic fungicide. Always follow label directions and remember, pesticide sprays cannot be applied more frequently than what is specified on the label.
