Greece Police Athletic League has big season

What began as a youth intervention program to keep kids off the streets and engaged in positive activities has grown into a program helping make the Greece Community stronger.

The Police Athletic League (PAL) program began in Greece in 1975 under the direction of retired Chief Gerald Phelan. Phelan began the nonprofit organization as a program to help foster positive community involvement between area youth and police. Retired Chief Phelan’s primary goal of the program was to keep children off the streets by involving them in organized sports, coached and mentored by police officers. Over the decades the program continued to evolve adding different sports ranging from boxing, bowling, basketball and softball. The program has continued for nearly half a century and is now under the direction of Chief Patrick Phelan and Sgt. Jared René of the Community Services Unit.

Participation this summer nearly doubled with more than 140 children on four teams organized by age group, ranging from 5 years old to 17 years old. The program is at no cost to the family and includes equipment, t-shirts and an end of season picnic banquet with trophy presentation. The Town of Greece and Supervisor Bill Reilich dedicated Badgerow Park to the PAL organization in 2017 and built covered dugouts for this community enriching program.

The Greece PAL program is the only completely free PAL program in New York State and is intended to be much more than simply learning a sport. It is created to help build good relationships and promote healthy youth activities in a positive fun environment. An Annual Fundraiser is done by the Greece PAL through a mail campaign where letters are distributed asking for donations from the community to keep the program running strong for another year.

This summer there was up to seven officers volunteering at the field, as well as assistance from the Greece Police Explorers and Greece Police interns. “This is a great opportunity to be outdoors coaching and teaching organized sports to kids of all

skill levels. It helps show the officers in a different light. No uniforms or badges, just wearing t-shirts, shorts and smiles,” said Sgt. René.

Officer Eric Hughes is the PAL coordinator and has many years of experience working closely with area kids as a former School Resource Officer. Officers Mark Babcock, Matt Bachman, Bill Murray and Kirsten Leudke are the officers out on the field coaching, cheering and laughing with the kids. Most of the officers have School Resource Officer experience which allows for great cross over from being in uniform at the schools to being in softball gear and having fun on the field.

During this time when kids and parents are extremely limited in their socialization, this program has helped get them out of the house and having good healthy fun. What better way than sports to bring us all together and bridge the gap between the community and law enforcement. Many parents stay and watch their kids play. Occasionally, special treats are brought in by the parents.

Steven Smola, a parent of a PAL athlete, surprised the teams by generously hiring a Lugia’s Ice Cream Truck to come after practice. “This organization is good for kids and it makes sense to make their day even better by having ice cream afterwards,” Smola said. This is Smola’s son’s first year playing. He is 12 years old and had his Little League canceled due to the pandemic. He and his friends were excited to join the Greece PAL program to play sports and have fun with peers and police officers this summer.

Texture in the garden and landscape

by Kristina Gabalski Texture is one of a plant’s physical characteristics that helps provide interest, variety, and beauty in the landscape. Other physical characteristics include form, size, and color. Cornell University says there is no right or wrong way to use texture in your garden and landscape, but just being aware of this quality is helpful in designing more pleasing plantings.

Texture describes how coarse or fine the overall surface and individual leaves of a plant feel or look. University of Florida Extension says that a variety of textures provides interest and contrast to the landscape. You may find that texture is one of the things that draws you to a particular plant. When you design your plantings, it is the visual texture of plants, as opposed to the tactile experience, that you will be most concerned about.

In addition to foliage, texture can also be found in the flowers, blades, and bark of the plant, as well as its overall branching pattern. Consider, too, that a plant’s texture may change as the seasons change. The bark and shape of deciduous plants become the dominant texture in the winter after the leaves are dropped. This is an important consideration if you want to have year-round interest in your landscape.

Plant textures range from fine to medium to coarse. According to Cornell University, most plants are medium-textured. By adding fine and coarse-textured plants to your landscape design, you add visual interest.

Fine-textured plants typically have small leaves and/or blossoms. They have a light and airy feel and create an illusion of filling space, Cornell says. They fade into the background and can

make a small space seem bigger. Examples include ferns, grasses, honey locust, lavender, fennel, spirea, and vines.

Medium-textured plants have branches and foliage that are neither large nor small. They have medium-sized leaves with simple shapes and smooth edges. Medium- textured plants are important, University of Florida Extension says, because they provide a background to the landscape and work to link and unify coarse and fine-textured plants. Think of lilacs and viburnum.

Coarse-textured plants usually have large leaves and/or blossoms as well as thick twigs and branches. They are exciting, inyour-face attention grabbers like hostas, holly, hydrangea, castor beans, and even rhubarb. In mass, coarse-textured plants can help a large, expansive space feel smaller.

A balance of texture is important. Cornell University says landscapes with all medium-textured plants can feel lackluster, but too much textural contrast can make a garden feel busy. If your landscape features fine-textured plants, it can lack focus without some specimen plants to catch the eye. Course-textured plants need medium and fine-textured plants to keep them from looking awkward and unwieldy. continued on page 7

“August 10th marked the start of the Hunting License Season.

As we have done at Greece Town Hall since the start of the COVID-19 shut down period, we have monitored crowds, access to services, etc. I am proud that here in Greece we opened up our doors safely and without incident on May 18th. Many towns are still not open to the public for services or have been offering limited services by appointment only. We have tried to remain flexible and watchful and have empowered our department heads to keep us informed as public interaction reaches numbers that will make social distancing difficult. We have also tried to balance the public’s desire to get back to a bit of “business as usual,” Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said.

Our Town Clerk, after evaluating opening day for hunting licenses, shared her concerns regarding: 1 – The number of people that were at the service counter area.

2 – That the New York State DEC this season is only allowing one computer and one printer for processing the licenses at our facility.

The computer issue was troubling before we even witnessed the number of people waiting to get their licenses and the backup it is causing is most concerning. A few weeks ago we reached out to the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and expressed our concerns about only having one processing computer this year (in the past we had a second machine), but they do not appear to be moving toward allowing an additional computer. This is, as you can imagine, very disappointing as we strive to maintain social distancing while serving our residents.

The fact that only one clerk can process licenses caused a backup and the result was having too many people in the area waiting.

To lessen the number of individuals in our Service Mall and to provide more timely processing, starting August 12th we will begin working on an “appointment only” basis for the issuance of hunting licenses. Residents that are interesting in obtaining their license can call our Town Clerk’s office at 723-2341. We also have two additional numbers for Town Clerk Staff: 723-2364 and 723-2389. Residents that would like to make their hunting license appoint are free to call anytime between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. We are looking forward to providing a more personalized service approach that not only meets the needs of convenience but continues to prioritize safety.

Back the Blue Rally Draws Thousands to the West Side

Thousands of bikers, cars and trucks showed up at Stokoe Farms in Scottsville on Saturday, July 25 for a rally to show support for local law enforcement. Many vehicles and participants were donning black and blue flags as well as American flags for this non-political event organized by two groups The Blue Line Ride and True Blue NY. Several events such as this took place throughout the region as an opportunity to show support and take a stand for police officers. The event began at Stokoe Farms and journeyed North on

259 through N. Chili, Ogden, and turned east on Rt. 31 in Spencerport ending in Gates. The massive ride was made up of thousands of motorcycles, classic cars, truck and cars bringing up the rear of this half hour ride to the Tech Park in Gates. Fire districts displaying patriotic support with flags on display over Rt. 259 as well as thousands of residents from the community lining the route of this procession with an impressive turnout of cheerful support and gratitude for law enforcement.

The Microbiome: Gateway to Better Health

You might have heard the current buzz word in health and wellness called “Microbiome.” Many do not know what it is or how important microbiome health is in your overall health.

Microbiome is the microorganisms that are present in the gut.

These billions of live bacteria, fungi and viruses that live in the digestive tract start at the esophagus and are found in the stomach all the way to the intestines and colon. These organisms have an integral impact on many diseases ranging from gastrointestinal disorders, auto immune disorders and cardiovascular disease. The gut is the place where the food you eat is digested, metabolized, absorbed and made useful in your cells, body and the energy we use. Our gut health and health of our microbiome has implications beyond a healthy digestive tract. It is also proven to impact our emotional/mental health, immune system health and weight management.

The total area of our gut is about the size of a small studio apartment. It is no wonder why it has such a profound impact on our overall health and wellness. The integrity of the microbiome is often underestimated and rarely thought of yet if it is compromised through, diet and environmental contaminants. It can cause inflammation and other disorders. Diet during infancy through adulthood can affect your gut health. Highly processed foods, especially those with empty carbs and sugar, can deteriorate the health of the lining of the gut. Antibiotics, alcohol, stress and anti-inflammatory drugs can also decrease gut health. Age and genetics influence the microbiome.

We can improve our gut health by eating foods that support gut health as well as taking supplementation. Prebiotics are fibers that ferment in the gut and make it more bioactive. These sold-out events featured the full drive-in movie theater experience – complete with popcorn! We were excited to implement this creative idea for our residents to enjoy a safe and fun family activity!

Mark your calendars for our Shredding Event this Fall! This free service for Greece residents will be held Wednesday, September 9, 2020 from 1:00pm – 4:00pm at the Greece Town Hall Campus. We anticipate that we will have a great deal of participation for our Fall event this year. I, our Greece Council Members, and our Receiver of Taxes will all be on hand to assist residents with unloading their vehicles throughout the duration of the event.

This past month, I was excited to unveil the new Electric Car Charging Stations on the Greece Town Hall Campus! When you visit Greece Town Hall, you will see four new charging stations in the parking lot just outside the Meeting Rooms area prominently in the center of the Town Hall Campus Parking Lot located at 1 Vince Tofany Boulevard.

These charging stations are open to the public for their use. The use of electric vehicles is growing and I am very happy to be able to offer

Chamber Issues Call for Small Business Nominations “This year perhaps more

than in previous years, challenged as we have been and continue to be by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is vitally important to recognize the spirit and will to persevere that are the hallmarks of American small business,” said Greece Regional Chamber President/CEO Sarah Lentini.

The Greece Regional Chamber of Commerce recently issued a call for nominations for the Chamber’s 2020 Small Business Awards made possible with the Presenting Sponsorship of Genesee Regional Bank, which has supported the signature awards since their inception over a decade ago.

The deadline for submitting nominations for the Small Business of the Year and the Microenterprise of the Year is August 31st.

All nominees will be announced and invited to an event in early fall to be recognized as nominees and to learn about the review and selection process leading to the recognition of six finalists and the announcement of two awardees at the Chamber’s Small Business Awards Luncheon in November.

Sailing Around the World

by Barbara Burke During the first week of August our stretch of the Erie Canal in Western New York was visited by Russian sailors traveling on an 18th century handmade pine wood replica of a Russian White Sea sailing boat. Named “Pilgrim,” the vessel is 42 ft. long, has three masts and took one and a half years of work to build.

“Pilgrim” is the result of a life-long dream of the ship’s Captain, Sergey Sinelnik, he and the crew are fulfilling his dream to sail around the world.

The adventure began in Russia on July 22, 2017 with 46 year old adventurer Captain Sergey Sinelnik commanding. “Pilgrim” entered the water at the Svir River in Russia. A banner displayed on the deck of “Pilgrim” proudly proclaims the vessel as an “International Cultural Sail Expedition.”

Onboard is a floating museum of works of art, products of national trade, and exhibition of models (made by Captain Sergey’s twin brother Alexander), dioramas and handmade articles relating to Russian shipbuilding and nautical history. The Captain and crew of “Pilgrim” define themselves as global ambassadors. On their website, an excerpt from the Pilgrim Project Philosophy states, “We are free! The world is not hostile; fears are only in our head. We can choose the paths. Live in harmony with nature, simple and with the measure in all. Navigate on Ocean routes, live the adventure of cognitive life. For Pilgrim happiness is always beyond the horizon, moving into the distance, in time and space, with God in heart.”

“Pilgrim” docked on the canal in Spencerport on August 7 for a brief visit, at this time they had already logged 11,000 nautical miles into their journey. Greece News staff photographer Karen Fien went down to the canal to snap some pictures. Karen struck up a conversation with first crew mate Alexei Volchok and was invited onboard to see the museum. “I have always loved boats. I really enjoyed seeing the museum because I also love old things.

Seeing those artifacts from another culture was very interesting.

It really wasn’t difficult to communicate. Alexei spoke English, but not many words were exchanged between us. It was such a great experience. I kept thinking about what it must have been like to cross the Atlantic Ocean onboard this sailboat, it is really close quarters,” Karen said.

Karen met Captain Sergey Sinelnik, but they didn’t talk, Captain Sergey simply handed her his business card. After the visit continued on page 18

Karen went home to her garden and picked fresh vegetables, she returned to the sailboat and gave them to the crew. At that point Captain Sergey gave her a big smile and asked if it was OK to take her picture, documentation of the kindness they received from Americans. We are truly all citizens of one world and kindness has no language barriers.

Greece Historical Society Virtual Event A History of Seneca Park Zoo by Maureen Whalen Tuesday, September 8, 2020 • 7:00 p.m. ZOOM* In April, longtime Greece Historical Society volunteer Maureen Whalen published the first and only comprehensive history of Seneca Park Zoo. Her book, A History of Seneca Park Zoo, traces the Zoo’s history from 1894 through 2013. In this program she’ll track the many changes at the Zoo from its years as a menagerie collection emphasizing the entertainment value of animals to its current role as a leader in species conservation Maureen Whalen and habitat preservation.

“Today,” she likes to say, paraphrasing a vintage Oldsmobile commercial, “This is not your father’s zoo.” She’ll also talk about some of the animals who have been favorites of zoo-goers over its twelve and a half decades. Whalen, who has been a docent at the Seneca Park Zoo since 2006, spent eight years searching through old newspaper accounts and annual reports, conducting interviews, and writing the history. The book retails for $25.00 and is currently available on Amazon.com.

Since retiring as the Branch Manager of the Charlotte Branch of the Rochester Public Library, Maureen Whalen has pursued her interests in researching local history. She co-wrote a history of the Rochester Public Library, One Hundred Years of Service.

As a volunteer at the Greece Historical Society and Museum she

has curated exhibits on topics ranging from the Underground Railroad to Prohibition.

Podcast explores complexities of women’s suffrage On August 26, 2020, Humanities New York (HNY) will premiere Amended, a new podcast commemorating the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment by deepening our understanding of this historic event.

Most Americans learn one specific version of the history of women’s suffrage: that a few bold, white women led a movement for equal voting rights and achieved victory 100 years ago when the United States ratified the 19th Amendment. That, we’re told, enabled all American women to vote. But history is never as simple as the stories we tell about it. After that historic milestone, more women could cast a ballot than ever before, and yet the fight for women’s equal voting rights was and still is, far from over.

Amended travels from the 1800s through to the present day to show a quest for women’s full equality that has always been as diverse, complex, and unfinished as the nation itself.

The host of Amended is Laura Free, a historian of women and politics. She is joined by other groundbreaking scholars whose work broadens our understanding of the struggle for equal voting rights. Guests Include Sharia Benn, Bettye Collier-Thomas, Martha Jones, Lisa Tetrault, and Judith Wellman. Through vivid storytelling, they highlight some important but under-recognized women who fought injustice based on race, citizenship status, and class, in addition to advocating for the rights of their sex.

Together, they’ll talk about what’s been gained, lost, and still left to be done.

“As a white historian, part of my scholarly work has been to call out and interrogate the racism of some of the icons of the suffrage movement,” said Free, the podcast’s host. “But that work

is only a small part of a broader project that so many historians are engaged in right now to recognize and lift up the voices that typical suffrage histories have marginalized or neglected in the past. I’m so glad to get the chance to be a part of a project like Amended that is doing this work. I’m also so excited to share stories about these amazing activists with our listeners.”

August Challenge at Lakeview Community Church

Lakeview Community Church, 30 Long Pond Road, near Edgemere Drive, supports the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf (GEFS) every month. Also, each year this church has an “August Challenge.” For example, in 2019 the August Challenge goal was to collect 1,500 cans of peaches and 1,845 were donated. With the COVID-19 challenges facing everyone in 2020, Lakeview Church is asking for monetary donations instead of just one item. This will relieve contributors of shopping and handling food items. GEFS typically provides for 400 clients but this year it has been almost 700 in the Greece and Charlotte areas. The GEFS shelves are quite empty.

Town of Greece LED Street Lighting Program to Launch NYSERDA Clean Energy Communities Grant Helps Spur Implementation The Town of Greece is making significant progress on its multiphase program of converting town-owned street lighting assets to light emitting diode (LED) technology. The Town previously purchased the street lighting infrastructure from Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E), which created the opportunity to initiate the LED conversion process.

Phase 1 of the street lighting upgrade project is currently underway, converting 1,272 street lights to LED technology along all or part of several major arterial roadways in the Town of Greece: Ridge Road, Latta Road, Long Pond Road, Fetzner Road, Dewey Avenue, Stone Road, Mount Read Boulevard, and Ling Road. In these areas, traditional high intensity discharge (HID) fixtures will be replaced with Philips brand LED luminaires and CIMCON asset management nodes.

Through the Clean Energy Communities program, the Town of Greece completed four of 10 high impact action items to demonstrate its commitment to energy conservation and sustainability.

The CEC designation garnered the Town a grant of $150,000 to be used towards the LED street lighting project. Rebates from RG&E valued at $63,692 will further reduce total project implementation costs.

LED street lighting luminaires consume less electricity and last four times longer than traditional HID fixtures, thus saving the Town money on operational costs and results in a project that will have a payback of about five years. The financial savings from Phase 1 of the LED street lighting upgrade will total more than $2.5 million over the next 25 years.

Additional phases of Greece’s comprehensive lighting upgrade project will convert several thousand more Town-owned street lights to LED, primary in residential areas. This work is anticipated to start in 2021.

Algae contributing to decline in Great Lakes fish population Shallow Lake Erie must stick to its strict diet to starve its problematic algal blooms, but the four deeper Great Lakes face a tricky dilemma balancing their nutrient needs, according to a new report by the International Joint Commission’s (IJC) Great Lakes Science Advisory Board. Understanding Declining Productivity in the Offshore Regions of the Great Lakes looks at the decline in fish populations in the offshore regions of Lakes Huron, Michigan, Ontario and Superior. In the report, the Science Advisory Board (SAB) recommends a cooperative approach to ecosystem forecasting science.

Many complex factors contribute to the observed decline in fish populations in four of the five Great Lakes. Ultimately, however, disruptions to the food web and nutrient cycle are a cause of declining offshore productivity of the fishery in every Great Lake except Erie.

The offshore nutrient phosphorus levels in every lake except Erie are below the bi-national targets established under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

“Reaching these nutrient targets is one of the Great Lakes research and management community’s most outstanding successes in the last 50 years,” said Pierre Béland, IJC Canadian cochair. “However, the lakes need a balanced diet of nutrients, and nutrients are an important part of the food web in the deeper offshore zones of the lakes. Below-target nutrient loads are one part of this problem.”

Despite below-target nutrient loads, harmful and nuisance algae persist. From soupy, toxic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) floating out near drinking water intakes, to stringy Cladophora algae creating a stinky mess on beaches, the algae are feasting on nutrients that are “trapped” there by invasive zebra and quagga mussels. These invasive species and other physical and biological changes disrupt the food web and the lakes’ normal nutrient cycle from the nearshore to the offshore.

For every Great Lake except Lake Erie, there is an observed decrease in the fish populations caught in offshore waters.

“The puzzle is that, at the same time as we see algae in the nearshore, we see fewer, leaner top predator fish like Lake Trout growing out in the deeper parts of the lakes. It is a proverbial famine for those fish because there are not enough nutrients cycling to the offshore to support their food supply,” said Rob Sisson, IJC US Commissioner. “Invasive species are therefore another important part of this complex problem that needs to be addressed.”

The Science Advisory Board developed this report with significant involvement and partnership from both water quality and fisheries science and management organizations, including the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC) based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The report recommends greater coordination between nutrients and fisheries management fields through an ecosystem-based approach.

“The findings and recommendation of this Science Advisory Board report are an unambiguous call to action for Canadian and US government leadership to explore and implement a holistic, ecosystem-based approach to managing invasive species, nutrients and fisheries, not just one or the other in isolation,” said Jeff Ridal, SAB Science Priority Committee Canadian co-chair and executive director of the River Institute at Cornwall, Ontario.

“One important outcome is that the collaboration that went into creating this report has inspired more coordination, particularly in developing better integrated hindcasting and forecasting

Algae depicted in a petri dish. modeling tools that link the nearshore and the offshore,” said Carol Miller, SAB Science Priority Committee US co-chair and director of Healthy Urban Waters at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

“Fishery managers in Canada and the United States are acutely aware that Great Lakes food webs have been compromised by the establishment of invasive species, particularly dresseinid mussels,” said Bob Lambe, executive secretary of the binational GLFC. “They will be interested in the findings from this report and the potential for developing new forecasting approaches to inform collaborative environmental management that addresses nutrients, invasive species and fish production in the Great Lakes.”

“The ecosystem models we currently work with are optimized for nutrients or fisheries, for nearshore or offshore, for large or small scales. We need to collaborate on tools that can help us see the ecosystem-level picture,” said Joe DePinto, SAB Science Priority Committee member, report co-author and independent consultant. “Efforts to model, monitor and manage the lakes should consider the nearshore and offshore zones together, and focus on the exchange of nutrients and biota between the two zones.”

“Coordination in developing forecasting models and tools is a priority for ecosystem-based management of the lakes if we are to truly succeed at adaptive management,” said Robert Hecky, SAB Science Priority Committee member, report co-author and professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota-Duluth Large Lakes Observatory.

“Therefore, leadership is important to regularly convene scientists and work on clarifying the relationship between excess algal growth in the nearshore and declines in nutrients and offshore fish populations,” said Hecky.

The IJC transmitted this report to the governments of Canada and the United States and to the co-chairs of the Great Lakes Executive Committee. The Great Lakes Executive Committee is the binational body that coordinates government activities under the Canada-US Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

The IJC Science Advisory Board Science Priority Committee and the GLFC will continue to work together to present and discuss this report with GLFC Committees, Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement Committees for Annex 2 (Lakewide Action and Management Plans) and Annex 4 (Nutrients), and other audiences.

The IJC has drawn governments attention to the important work done by the Great Lakes Commission and the Invasive Mussel Collaborative and encourages the Great Lakes Executive Committee to explore how they might support addressing the issue.

Regional task force formed to support K-12 school reopening A new task force will help ensure the physical and emotional health and safety of students and their families, education professionals, and the community as schools in 13 Finger Lakes counties navigate the unprecedented process of reopening in the midst of a pandemic.

Along with parent representatives, the Finger Lakes Reopening Schools Safely Task Force brings together 40-plus leaders from public health, health care, education, government, and nonprofits. The cross-sector planning group will provide a forum for candid discussion among stakeholder groups and ensure that local decisions are guided by the latest scientific findings about COVID-19.

The task force is committed to equity for all students, including those who live in poverty, lack internet access, or have special needs.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has brought our community together in ways we never expected,” said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. “As school districts throughout Monroe County and the Finger Lakes region begin to release their reopening plans, our top concern remains the health, safety, and wellbeing of students, teachers, staff, and families. From our public health and health care professionals to local government and school district officials, we are all working together to ensure the public health of our community remains at the forefront.”

Wade Norwood, CEO of Common Ground Health, said: “Our children’s next year will be shaped by the choices we make in the coming weeks. By pooling the resources and collective wisdom of our entire region, we are committing ourselves to an extraordinary effort on behalf of our students. During this crisis, they deserve no less.”

Although details of reopening plans remain the responsibility of individual school districts and will vary depending on local conditions, the task force will identify common challenges and share best practices among its members.

“Educating our children is never an easy job, even in the best of times,” said Monroe County Commissioner of Public Health Dr. Michael Mendoza. “Now, our schools are facing the unimaginable challenge of teaching our children in the midst of a pandemic. This task force provides a critical support system for public, private, and charter schools throughout our region.”

Recognizing that reopening is a long-term process, not a single day event, the task force will provide an ongoing forum for handling the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, which can change rapidly as the surge in cases in other states is proving.

Vickie Swinehart, public health director for Seneca County, said: “Finding common ground on how to reopen schools is essential. The task force will help us share resources across districts, avoid duplication of efforts, and prevent confusion.”

The multi-sector group can also serve as a unified voice when the region needs to advocate for resources or regulatory changes.

“This collaborative table will help balance the health risks of reopening with the pressing need to continue student learning,” said Lesli Myers-Small, superintendent of the Rochester City School District. “Our children and their education cannot be put on pause. At the same time, we must safeguard the health of everyone, from students and their families to school staff and the community at large.”

Convened by Common Ground, the Reopening Schools Safely Task Force covers the 13 Finger Lakes counties of Allegany, Chemung, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates.

Online study seeks volunteers to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease Sixteen percent of New Yorkers, more than 3.2 million people, are 65 and older, making New York one of the “grayest states” in the nation. Consequently, it has one of the largest populations of people with Alzheimer’s disease – a projected 410,000. This number is expected to skyrocket by 12 percent to 460,000 people in the next five years.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, and the University of Rochester Medical Center are looking for participants age 50 and older with no memory loss to take part in the Alzheimer Prevention Trials (APT) Webstudy. APT is a first-of-its-kind online study that detects if people experience memory loss over time and need early intervention, and matches them with the right Alzheimer’s study as quickly as possible.

Volunteers take nocost memory tests online every three months to monitor memory changes over time. If changes are observed, volunteers may be invited to an in-person evaluation to determine eligibility for additional Alzheimer’s studies.

Virtual five-hour pre-licensing course offered Governor Cuomo recently approved virtual classes for the fivehour pre-licensing course that is required in New York State to obtain a driver’s license. With classroom instruction not allowed in New York at this time, many students were frustrated waiting for the required coursework. AAA Driver Training was one of the first local driving schools to offer the course virtually, guided by a trained instructor. With video technology, AAA instructors are able to lead the class, share images and videos, and even answer questions from students. Unlike an online defensive driving class that can be completed at your leisure with no instructor, the virtual option has an instructor and is offered at a specific time like a classroom lesson.

AAA has regularly scheduled virtual classes. With hundreds of students registered through AAA who were waiting for the fivehour course, it will take some time to get through the backlog.

However, new registrations are being accepted for future classes at www.AAA.com/DriverTraining.

AAA in-car driving lessons and driver evaluations have resumed with proper car cleaning after each lesson, good hygiene, social distancing and safety protocols in place. New students will be placed on a wait list that could take several days or weeks in high demand areas.

Initial results from the region’s COVID-19 symptom tracker released Officials encourage residents to join those who have already signed up Thanks to more than 930,000 daily screens submitted over the past two months, the region’s ROC COVID symptom tracker is now able to share trend data on the prevalence of COVID-19 symptoms.

The news, at least for now, is good. For the past month, symptom reports have remained at one percent, down from two percent in early May when the project launched.

The symptom rate is based on answers to a daily ROC COVID text or email asking if participants are experiencing a fever, a cough, chills or other coronavirus symptoms. As of July 23, more than 23,800 residents had signed up for the daily screening tool, which aims to detect COVID-19 hotspots before the virus spreads.

The low level of reported symptoms indicates that residents are doing all the right things in our region, according to public health officials. People are wearing masks, continuing to physically distance, and washing hands frequently.

“We are still learning a lot about this pandemic. The more data we collect, the better we will understand how to prevent the spread of the virus in our region,” said Dr. Michael Mendoza, commissioner of public health for Monroe County. “The release of the ROC COVID trend data is a milestone, and I truly hope it encourages even more people to make the symptom tracker a small part of their daily routine.”

Along with the symptom rate, public health officials rely on test results, hospitalizations, intensive care usage, and other measures to monitor and respond to the virus. These indicators are critical for ensuring adequate resources and contact tracing, but there is an inevitable lag between when a person starts to feel unwell and when they get tested or end up in the hospital.

That’s where symptom tracking steps in. ROC COVID aims to detect a rise in COVID-19 cases sooner than is possible by testing alone.

“We have said all along that slowing the spread of COVID19 is going to take a community effort,” said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. “While it is still early and much of this data is preliminary, these results are further proof that Monroe County and Finger Lakes residents have come together to flatten the curve and ensure that our healthcare resources are not stretched beyond their capacity. But our work is not yet complete, and widespread regional participation in the ROC COVID symptom tracker remains a critical piece in our efforts to mitigate the impact of the virus.”

ROC COVID is “a watchtower for coronavirus,” said Wade Norwood, chief executive officer of Common Ground Health, the region’s health research and planning organization. “If you see smoke, you don’t wait until the forest is in flames to call for help.

When we see symptoms, the goal is to direct public health resources such as testing and education to neighborhoods at risk before the virus spreads.”
