Grant assistance available for history-related organizations

The Pomeroy Fund for NYS History is a new partnership between the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and the Museum Association of New York (MANY). This fund will grant assistance to 501(c)(3) history-related organizations in New York State with budgets under $100,000 that have been forced to close in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pomeroy Fund for NYS History grants will range between $1,000 and $2,000 per organization. A total of $50,000 will be distributed. Applications are being accepted through Monday, April 27. Funds will be disbursed starting May 13.

Awarded funds can be used to purchase computer hardware or software, pay for utilities, gain internet access or expand bandwidth, and secure facilities and collections “Together, we are all facing unprecedented circumstances,” said Bill Pomeroy, Founder and Trustee of the Pomeroy Foundation. “The present pandemic has caused significant disruption for history organizations. These organizations have been, and continue to be, vital resources in our communities. That’s why

we have partnered with MANY to start the Pomeroy Fund for NYS History and provide much needed assistance to critical areas of their operations.”

Grant applications will be reviewed by a panel that will include MANY Board, MANY staff, and Pomeroy Foundation staff. Greece Town Board Passes Resolution to Reduce Permit Fees for Certain Shoreline Projects Members of the Greece Town Board passed a resolution to reduce Permit Fees for Shorline Projects.

Greece Town Board Agenda Item No. 5 reads: Authorization for the Town’s Building Department to administratively collect reduced building permit fees for shoreline projects being performed under exigent circumstances, such as residential shoreline projects funded through the New York State Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative.

The adoption of this item means that both the Flood Man-

agement Permit Fee and the Coastal Erosion Hazard Permit Fee would be reduced by 50%. The Flood Management Permit Fee will be reduced from $50 to $25. This affects any properties that border a floodplain and any resident having break wall work completed. The Coastal Erosion Permit Fee will be reduced from $200 to $100. This affects any resident living in the Coastal Erosion Hazard Area (such as all properties along Lakeshore Boulevard).

United Way COVID-19 Response Masks YOU Can Help Your Neighbors and Community There is a huge demand for cloth masks to help slow the spread of COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Monroe County Department of Health are in agreement with New York State Governor Cuomo’s executive orders requiring all people in New York to wear masks or face covering in public, including when taking public or private transportation or riding in for-hire vehicles.

The United Way is in need of more that 50,000 homemade masks for distribution to nonprofit staff and clients, they are asking for help from the community. If you are able to sew, the CDC has released a step-by-step tutorial that is easy to follow and uses common sewing materials. They suggest making masks to donate, and to make some extras to give to your friends, family, and neighbors.

The CDC has also issued these important directions on how to wear cloth face coverings/masks.

Face coverings should •Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face •Be secured with ties or ear loops •Include multiple layers of fabric •Allow for breathing without restriction •Be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape Other recommendations •Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

•Be careful not to touch your eyes, nose and mouth when removing a face covering and wash hands immediately after removing.

•Even while wearing a face covering, the CDC still recommends that you stay at lease 6 feet away from other people (social distancing), and frequent hand washing.

Rotarians Learn About Robotics

At a recent meeting, Greece Rotarians were introduced to the exciting field of Robotics when members of Greece High Schools Robotics teams visited the Club.

The students are members of the Greece Gladiators Robotics Team.

The mission of the Robotics Club is to give the students a chance to obtain experience working with technology as a team, and to achieve a common goal. The end result is a robot that is taken into competition with teams from throughout the country at the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics competition. Rotarians not only met the students and their coordinator, they also met the Robot in its earliest stage of creation.

The American Dream From Greece Tot Soccer to the Lancers Hall of Fame

Marc Sotile, son of Joe and Monika Sotile, grew up in Greece in the Paddy Hill area. He was the only boy in the family with three older sisters. When Marc was a little boy, his dad encouraged him to put down his sister’s Barbie dolls to go outside and play with the neighbors who were playing soccer in the front yard. The Kompaniec family, originally from Brazil, were like Marc’s second family and the first to expose Marc to soccer. Marc’s dad Joe recognized his son’s interest and natural abilities in soccer and encouraged him to play in the Greece Recreation Soccer League. By the time Marc was eight he moved up to an All Star team that went on to win several tournaments both locally and in Canada. It was the first team in history to win all ten games in this division.

At a young age Marc’s soccer talent began emerging as a defenseman. He went on to play on the newly formed Greece Lightning and played on this team until he was 15. In middle school Marc knew his two primary passions were soccer and cars. Veterans Service Agency Offers Help for Veterans When the COVID-19 crisis first began to tighten its grip on Monroe County, Nick Stefanovic’s thoughts turned to the military veterans he serves every day as director of the county’s Veterans Service Agency.

“I started thinking about the fact that if service agencies had to close, we have so many veterans in our community who rely on these other organizations for food and essentials and that it could get more difficult for them to get what they need if things started closing,” said Stefanovic.

He reached out to the veteran community with a plea to help, and they delivered. Local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts and individuals have donated well over $3,000 in non-perishable food and supplies and more than $1,500 in grocery gift cards to the effort. Stefanovic has been able to help

more than two dozen families with groceries and gift cards to cover other necessities. He hopes to continue to help, “Any veteran or family member of a vet can contact us and they can pick up, or we will deliver to them.

With the continuing generosity of Monroe County residents, Stefanovic will be able to keep up with the needs. “It’s a great thing to see the community respond in the way you would want.

It’s just been overwhelming and the calls with donations just keep coming in.”

Aire Serv of Brockport expands its business

by Barbara Burke With the purchase in January 2019 of Hi-Qual Heating and Cooling in Spencerport, Aire Serv of Brockport has grown its business. Owned by Bill and Ann Hill of Spencerport since 1988, Hi-Qual Heating and Cooling has been a successful family owned and operated community business with a loyal customer base for over 30 years.

Aire Serv owner Rick DAmbrosia was looking to expand his Brockport business. He said, “News travels fast in this business. I heard that Bill Hill was interested in making a change, so I contacted him immediately.” Rick grew up in Gates and graduated from Gates Chili High School. He studied heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration at Alfred State College. His first job, right out of college, was with Hi-Qual Heating and Cooling in Spencerport. Rick worked for Hi-Qual for a year and then accepted an opportunity to work for Wegmans in refrigeration, where he worked for 20 years.

Rick purchased Hi-Qual over a year ago, and Bill still comes into the office almost every day. Rick said, “He is an advisor and a mentor.”

Right from the start, customer service at Aire Serv begins when a call is made to the office. Ann Hill was the office manager for Hi-Qual, and her voice was the first contact with the customer.

“When the phone rings, it is important to answer it with a smile.

The person on the other end knows this, and that was a big part of what Ann brought to our business,” Bill Hill said.

Dana Starr is now entrusted with the job of Office Manager.

“I met Rick through my mother. When Rick called me to come and help him jump-start this venture, I accepted. He wanted the same customer service that Bill and Ann provided before Rick took over. Change is hard for many people, but we quickly learned that people are extraordinarily loyal to Bill and Ann. They are in a routine, and it is important for me to establish a rapport with the customer just like what they have had over the years,” Dana said.

Involvement in the community is also a big part of Aire Serv’s commitment. Rick is a member of Kiwanis, Better Contractor’s Bureau, and the Chamber of Commerce. He sponsors concerts at the gazebo and a Spencerport baseball team. Being involved in the local community is a valuable part of operating a successful small business.

Rick DAmbrosia started his Aire Serv franchise in Brockport in 2018. Each Aire Serv franchise is independent; all the decisions and pricing are at Rick’s discretion. Lulu always greets visitors to the office in the sweetest way. “We call her our ‘pawoffice’ assistant,” Dana, who is Lulu’s mom, says.
